RESUMEN
In this study, based on a cross-sectional study among 9597 preschoolers in Shandong of China, we quantitatively evaluated influences of lifestyle behaviors and air treatment equipment on indoor damp exposures and thus on risks of childhood pneumonia. In the two-level multivariate logistic regression analyses, childhood pneumonia was significantly associated with parent-reported damp clothing/bedding and visible mold spots or damp stains. These associations were weaker among preschoolers from families who frequently opened the child's bedroom windows, frequently cleaned the child's bedroom, and frequently exposed beddings to sunshine (references: not frequently), as well as among preschoolers without usage of air humidifier and air conditioner and with usage of air purifier. Our results indicate that frequently keeping household ventilation and cleanness, and exposing beddings to sunshine, as well using air purifier could decrease the effects of household damp-related exposures on childhood pneumonia, but using air humidifier and air conditioner could increase the effects.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: To investigate differential associations of traditional and novel adiposity indices with visual impairment (VI) in the middle-aged and older Chinese population. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 7750 Chinese older adults aged over 45 were included at baseline 2011, and 4133 participants who accomplished all three interviews from 2011 to 2015 were adapted for longitudinal analyses. We enrolled six adiposity indices, including the body mass index (BMI), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), a body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI) and conicity index (ConI). Visual status and other covariates included sociodemographic characteristics, medical supports and lifestyle-related factors. Cross-sectional correlations were assessed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. For longitudinal analysis, generalised linear models with generalised estimating equations were used to determine the association between time-varying adiposity and visual status. RESULTS: Higher levels of WHtR/WWI/ABSI/BRI/ConI were significantly associated with an increased prevalence of VI, whereas a higher BMI was associated with a decreased prevalence of VI. Only WWI was significantly related to the prevalence of VI after adjustment for multiple confounders in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses (all p values <0.05). The multivariable-adjusted OR (95% CI) of VI associated with the highest (vs lowest) quintile of WWI was 1.900 (1.407 to 2.565). CONCLUSION: WWI is a reliable alternative adiposity index that exhibits a dose-response association with the prevalence of VI in the Chinese population. The WWI-VI correlation may eliminate the obesity paradox in the ophthalmic epidemiological area and indicate the detrimental impact of changes in body composition on VI.

PURPOSE: To investigate the associations between the most popular social media platform WeChat usage and cognitive performance among the middle-aged and older Chinese population using data from a nationally representative survey. METHODS: In total, 17,472 participants (≥ 45 years old) from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, Wave 4, 2018) were analyzed. Cognitive performance including episodic memory and executive function was assessed using Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Other confounding variables included socio-economic characteristics, medical status, and lifestyle-related information. Multiple linear regression models were used to test the association between cognitive performance and WeChat usage by introducing covariates hierarchically. Subgroup analyses of age and gender were conducted to estimate the robustness of the primary findings. RESULTS: After adjusting for multiple confounders across all linear models, WeChat usage is significantly associated with executive function, episodic memory, and global cognitive performance (all p values<0.05). Such results remained robust in subgroup analyses, stratified by age and gender, and also verified according to longitudinal analyses. Compared to 'Chat-only' users who only used WeChat for online interpersonal communication, further usage of WeChat functions such as using 'Moments' appeared to be significantly associated with better cognitive performance, especially for episodic memory. CONCLUSION: Social media usage is significantly and positively associated with better cognitive performance among the middle-aged and older Chinese population. Along with point-to-point messaging, using 'Moments' and extended social media platform functions may correlate to better cognitive performance.

Recent maritime cybersecurity accidents reveal that shipping is facing increased exposure to cyber threats, especially due to the fast-growing digitalisation of the sector, leaving vessels and their onboard systems vulnerable to cyberattacks. This research aims at evaluating the relationship among the critical dimensions influencing cybersecurity performance in the maritime industry. To achieve this, six critical dimensions related to cybersecurity preparedness are first identified through literature review, namely 'regulations', 'company procedures' from a managerial perspective and 'shipboard systems readiness', 'training and awareness', 'human factor' and 'compliance monitoring' at an operation level. A Likert-scale questionnaire is designed and used to collect empirical data from 133 seafarers and shore-based staff. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) is applied to examine the causal relationships between the six dimensions and shipboard cybersecurity performance. The results show that 'regulations' positively influence shipping companies' cybersecurity-related 'procedures', which in turn positively affects 'shipboard systems readiness', 'training and awareness', and 'monitoring'. Further, 'training and awareness' positively influences the cybersecurity performance of ships. The results have profound implications for the shipping industry on how to strengthen their cyber practices in order to improve their cybersecurity performance. Recommendations for future academic research related to maritime cybersecurity are also provided.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Experimental and cross-sectional evidence has suggested a potential role of infection in the ethology of Parkinson's disease (PD). We aim to examine the longitudinal association of infections with the incidence of PD and to explore whether the increased risk is limited to specific infection type rather than infection burden. METHODS: Based on the UK Biobank, hospital-treated infectious diseases and incident PD were ascertained through record linkage to national hospital inpatient registers. Infection burden was defined as the sum of the number of infection episodes over time and the number of co-occurring infections. The polygenic risk score (PRS) for PD was calculated. The genome-wide association studies (GWAS) used in two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) were obtained from observational cohort participants of mostly European ancestry. RESULTS: Hospital-treated infectious diseases were associated with an increased risk of PD (adjusted HR [aHR] 1.35 [95 % CI 1.20-1.52]). This relationship persisted when analyzing new PD cases occurring more than 10 years post-infection (aHR 1.22 [95 % CI 1.04-1.43]). The greatest PD risk was observed in neurological/eye infection (aHR 1.72 [95 % CI 1.32-2.34]), with lower respiratory tract infection (aHR 1.43 [95 % CI 1.02-1.99]) ranked the second. A dose-response association was observed between infection burden and PD risk within each PD-PRS tertile (p-trend < 0.001). Multivariable MR showed that bacterial and viral infections increase the PD risk. CONCLUSIONS: Both observational and genetic analysis suggested a causal association between infections and the risk of developing PD. A dose-response relationship between infection burden and incident PD was revealed.

Aims: To investigate the association between socioeconomic position (SEP) and sensory impairments (SIs). Methods: We used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) (2015). Logistic regressions estimated the odds ratio for associations of SEP with SIs. In addition, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was conducted to assess the causal relationship between them with the inverse variance weighting (IVW) estimator. MR-Egger, simple median, weighted median, maximum likelihood, and robust adjusted profile score were employed for sensitivity analyses. Results: In the observational survey, we enrolled 19,690 individuals aged 45 and above. SEP was negatively associated with SIs. Adjusted odds of vision impairment were higher for illiterate (1.50; 95%CI: 1.19, 1.91), less than elementary school diploma (1.76; 95%CI: 1.39, 2.25), middle school diploma (1.53; 95%CI: 1.21, 1.93) and lower income (all p < 0.001). The odds of hearing impairment were significantly higher for people with less than a high school diploma than those with a college degree or higher diploma, for agricultural workers than non-agricultural workers, and for people in low-income families (p < 0.01). The MR analysis also showed that occupation was associated with HI (1.04, 95%CI: 1.01, 1.09, p < 0.05) using IVW. Conclusion: We found that both observational and causal evidence supports the theory that SEP can result in SIs and that timely discovery, targeted management, and education can prevent SIs among middle-aged and older adults.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and the risk of acute primary angle closure (APAC). Methods: Two hundred eighty-one (281) patients with APAC and 730 age- and sex-matched controls hospitalized between January 2017 and December 2019 were enrolled in this retrospective case-control study. Residential exposure to ambient air pollutants, including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particulate (PM10), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone were estimated by satellite-models or ground measurement. Multivariate regression analyses explored the association between annual air pollutants exposure and the risk of APAC. Results: Of the 1011 participants (31.1% were male subjects), the average age was 64.0 years. Long-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 were significantly associated with an increased risk of APAC. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) for each interquartile range (IQR) increment of PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 were 1.28 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.06-1.57), 1.26 (95% CI = 1.06-1.50), and 1.30 (95% CI = 1.04-1.62) separately, after controlling for confounders. Robust associations were observed for a longer lag 2-year exposure. Conclusions: Long-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, and SO2 was associated with an increased risk of APAC in a Chinese population. Our findings provide epidemiological implications on the adverse effects of air pollution on ocular diseases. Translational Relevance: Long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants increased the risk of APAC.

Skeletal muscle may mutually interact with gastrointestinal disease through metabolic homeostasis and nutritional status and therefore may be a marker for early risk detection. We conducted a prospective cohort analysis including 393,606 participants (mean age 56.0 years, 53.9% female) from the UK Biobank. The exposures were grip strength and skeletal muscle mass (SMM). The primary outcomes were 24 incident gastrointestinal diseases. During a mean follow-up of 12.1 years, we found that one sex-specific SD increase in grip strength and SMM were associated with reduced risk of 16 and 19 gastrointestinal diseases, respectively. For grip strength, the HRs ranged from 0.94 (for ulcerative colitis) to 0.80 (for liver cancers). For SMM, the HRs ranged from 0.92 (for colorectal cancer) to 0.51 (for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). Our finding suggested that grip strength and SMM might be significant indicators for gastrointestinal diseases risk screen.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Long-term exposure to ambient air pollution is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Little is known about the impact of early-life exposure to air pollutants on CVD risk factors in late adolescence, which may track into adulthood. To clarify, we examined this question in a unique setting with high air pollution and a high level of economic development. METHODS: This study leveraged the "Children of 1997" Hong Kong birth cohort (N = 8327), including here 3350 participants. We estimated ambient air pollutant exposure including inhalable particulate matter (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and nitrogen monoxide (NO) by growth phase (in utero, infancy, childhood) and overall based on residential address. Generalized linear regression was used to assess the associations of air pollutants exposure by growth phase and sex with CVD risk factors (fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, lipid profile, blood pressure, and body mass index) at 17.6 years. We also assessed whether associations varied by sex. RESULTS: Early life exposed had little association with glucose metabolism, blood pressure or body mass index, but after considering multiple comparisons early exposure to PM10 was associated with low density lipoprotein (LDL) in boys, with ß and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) of 0.184 (0.069 to 0.298) mmol/l, 0.151 (0.056 to 0.248) mmol/l, and 0.157 (0.063 to 0.252) mmol/l by per interquartile range (IQR) increment of PM10 for in utero, infancy, and overall, respectively. No such associations were evident for girls, differences by sex were evident. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggested sex-specific associations of early-life PM10 exposure with elevated LDL in adolescence, especially exposure in utero and infancy.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the role of outdoor air pollution exposure in sarcopenia in Asia. We aimed to investigate the association of outdoor air pollutants exposure with sarcopenia among Chinese adults. METHODS: This nationally population-representative study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) in 2015, 11,700 participants at least 45 years old from 125 Chinese cities were included. Sarcopenia status was identified according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 (AWGS 2019) criteria. Ambient annual average air pollutants including fine particulate matter (PM2.5), inhalable particles (PM10), coarse particulate matter (PMcoarse), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and carbon monoxide (CO) were estimated by satellite models and ground-based measurements. Multinomial logistic regression models were performed to examine the associations of air pollutants exposure with different status of sarcopenia (including possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia). Stratified analyses were utilized to assess the effect modifiers. RESULTS: Among the 11,700 participants (52.6% women), the average age was 61.0 years. Each 10 µg/m3 increment of annual PMcoarse was associated with a higher risk of possible sarcopenia (odds ratio (OR) = 1.08, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.04-1.11). Stratified analyses showed a positive risk of possible sarcopenia in women after exposure to PM10, PMcoarse, and NO2. Ambient NO2 exposure was positively associated with sarcopenia (OR = 1.13, 95% CI 1.04-1.22) in those aged 65 years and older. However, we have not observed differences by sex, age, residence, smoking, and drinking. Robustness results were found for PMcoarse in the sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSION: This nationwide study suggested that long-term exposure to outdoor air pollution, especially for PMcoarse, was associated with the risk of sarcopenia among Chinese adults. Our findings provide epidemiological implications for protecting healthy ageing by improving air quality.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate whether individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) were at higher risk of developing a wide range of gastrointestinal diseases based on a population-based cohort study. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study included 374,125 participants free of gastrointestinal disorders at baseline; of them, 19,719 (5.27%) with T2D were followed-up by linking to multiple medical records to record gastrointestinal disease diagnoses. Multivariable Cox models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and CIs. Logistic models were used to examine the associations between polygenic risk scores (PRS) and clinical gastrointestinal phenotypes. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.0 years, we observed the new onset of 15 gastrointestinal diseases. Compared with nondiabetes, participants with T2D had an increased risk of gastritis and duodenitis (HR 1.58, 95% CI 1.51-1.65), peptic ulcer (HR 1.56, 95% CI 1.43-1.71), diverticular disease (HR 1.19, 95% CI 1.14-1.24), pancreatitis (HR 1.45, 95% CI 1.24-1.71), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (HR 2.46, 95% CI 2.25-2.69), liver cirrhosis (HR 2.92, 95% CI 2.58-3.30), biliary disease (HR 1.18, 95% CI 1.10-1.26), gastrointestinal tract cancers (HR 1.28, 95% CI 1.17-1.40), and hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancer (HR 2.32, 95% CI 2.01-2.67). Positive associations of PRS of T2D with gastritis, duodenitis, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease were also observed. CONCLUSIONS: In this large cohort study, we found that T2D was associated with increased risks of a wide range of gastrointestinal outcomes. We suggest the importance of early detection and prevention of gastrointestinal disorders among patients with T2D.

Discovering drivers of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is vital for the Chinese government to achieve carbon peak and carbon neutral. With this aim, a theoretical endogenous growth model capturing the mitigating effect of green finance and green innovation on carbon emissions is constructed in this study, which is further empirically examined using China's municipal-level panel data during 2010-2019. The main findings are as follows: First, there is theoretical and empirical evidence supporting that green finance and green innovation can inhibit carbon emissions. Second, the above inhibitory effects demonstrate clear regional disparities with significant effects only in eastern and central Chinese cities, which are moderated by environmental regulations and marketization levels, respectively. Third, in cities with high green finance, green finance plays a more significant role in reducing carbon emissions than green innovation, and the opposite is true in cities with low green finance. In addition, the robustness and endogeneity checks indicate that the results of this study are robust and reliable. These theoretical and empirical findings create profound implications for CO2 emission reduction by vigorously guiding funds to green finance and formulating scientific and effective environmental regulations to promote green innovation in China.

Mitochondria are highly dynamic organelles capable of altering their sizes and shapes to maintain metabolic balance through coordinated fission and fusion processes. In various cancer types, mitochondrial hyperfragmentation has been frequently observed, contributing to the progression of cancer toward metastasis. Inverted formin 2 (INF2), which resides in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), has been found to accelerate actin polymerization and drive mitochondrial fission. In this study, we demonstrate that INF2 expression is significantly upregulated in endometrial cancer (EC) and is associated with a poor prognosis in EC patients. INF2 promotes anchorage-dependent and independent EC cell growth in part by facilitating mitochondrial fission. Furthermore, in conditions of energy stress, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylates INF2 at Ser1077, leading to increased localization of INF2 to the ER and enhanced recruitment of the dynamin-related protein 1 (DRP1) to mitochondria. This AMPK-mediated phosphorylation of INF2 at Ser1077 facilitates mitochondrial division and promotes EC cell growth. Pathological examination using immunohistochemical analyses revealed a positive correlation between AMPK activity and phosphorylated INF2 (Ser1077) in EC specimens. Collectively, our findings uncover novel molecular mechanisms involving the AMPK-INF2 axis, which regulates mitochondrial dynamics and malignant cell growth in EC.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the association between air pollution exposure and sarcopenia in Asia. We aimed to investigate the associations of indoor solid fuel use and long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) with sarcopenia in China. METHODS: Using a nationally population-representative study, 12,723 participants aged at least 45 years across 125 cities from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were enrolled in 2011, and further 3110 participants were followed up until 2013. Sarcopenia status was classified according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 criteria. Household fuel types used for heating and cooking were assessed using a standard questionnaire. Ambient annual PM2.5 was estimated using satellite-based spatiotemporal models. Multinomial logistic regression as well as the multiplicative interaction and additive interaction analysis were used to explore the associations of indoor solid fuel and ambient PM2.5 with different status of sarcopenia. RESULTS: Of the 12,723 participants, 6071 (47.7%) were men. In the cross-sectional analyses, compared with clean fuel, using solid fuel for heating and cooking, separately or simultaneously, was significantly associated with a higher risk of both possible sarcopenia and sarcopenia. Each 10 µg/m3 increment of PM2.5 was positively related to possible sarcopenia (adjusted odds ratio, [aOR] 1.04, 1.02-1.07) and sarcopenia (1.06, 1.01-1.12). We found a significant interaction between solid fuel use for heating and ambient PM2.5 exposure with possible sarcopenia. During a two-year follow-up, solid fuel use was associated with incident possible sarcopenia (aOR 1.59, 1.17-2.15). These associations did not differ by sex and age, while participants living in a house with poor cleanliness might have a higher risk of sarcopenia. CONCLUSIONS: Indoor solid fuel use and long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 were associated with a higher risk of sarcopenia among Chinese adults. These findings provide implications for promoting healthy aging by reducing air pollution.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The associations between gastrointestinal diseases (GIs) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) were unclear. We conducted a prospective cohort study to explore their associations. METHODS: This study included 330 751 individuals without baseline CVD from the UK Biobank cohort. Individuals with and without GIs were followed up until the ascertainment of incident CVDs, including coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular disease (CeVD), heart failure (HF) and peripheral artery disease (PAD). The diagnosis of diseases was confirmed with combination of the nationwide inpatient data, primary care data, and cancer registries. A multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression model was used to estimate the associations between GIs and the risk of incident CVD. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 11.8 years, 31 605 incident CVD cases were diagnosed. Individuals with GIs had an elevated risk of CVD (hazard ratio 1.37; 95% confidence interval 1.34-1.41, P < 0.001). Eleven out of fifteen GIs were associated with an increased risk of CVD after Bonferroni-correction, including cirrhosis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, gastritis and duodenitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Barrett's esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease, peptic ulcer, celiac disease, diverticulum, appendicitis, and biliary disease. The associations were stronger among women, individuals aged ≤ 60 years, and those with body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m2. CONCLUSIONS: This large-scale prospective cohort study revealed the associations of GIs with an increased risk of incident CVD, in particular CHD and PAD. These findings support the reinforced secondary CVD prevention among patients with gastrointestinal disorders.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: To examine whether general and abdominal adiposity was a risk factor for the new-onset of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the potential mediating effect of metabolic and inflammation status. METHODS: A total of 492,998 individuals free of IBD recruited from 2006 to 2010 in the UK Biobank were included in our study, with ongoing follow-up linking to the health-related outcome. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to evaluate the associations between general adiposity (body mass index) and abdominal adiposity (waist circumference) and the subsequent risk of IBD and its subtype. We also investigated the potential mediating effects of metabolic and inflammation status by carrying out exploratory mediation analyses. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 12.5 years, we documented 2954 incident IBD cases (915 Crohn's disease [CD] and 2039 ulcerative colitis). After adjustment for important confounders, body mass index (hazard ratio [HR] highest quintile [Q5] vs. lowest quintile [Q1] = 1.18, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.32; P-trend = 0.006) and waist circumference (HR Q5 vs. Q1 = 1.30, 95% CI 1.14-1.49; P-trend <0.001) showed a positive association with the risk of IBD. The associations were partially mediated by metabolic status (24%; 15%), C-reactive protein (36%; 19%) and inflammation score (82%; 46%). CONCLUSIONS: Adiposity bore a risk factor for incident IBD, whereas unhealthy metabolism, especially inflammation, seemed to be an important intermediate condition between the association. Our findings provide evidence for possible mechanisms relating adiposity to IBD from an epidemiological perspective, and experimental studies are needed for further demonstration.

AIMS: Observational studies show inconsistent associations of red meat consumption with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes. Moreover, red meat consumption varies by sex and setting, however, whether the associations vary by sex and setting remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to summarize the evidence concerning the associations of unprocessed and processed red meat consumption with CVD and its subtypes [coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and heart failure], type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and to assess differences by sex and setting (western vs. eastern, categorized based on dietary pattern and geographic region). Two researchers independently screened studies from PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library for observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published by 30 June 2022. Forty-three observational studies (N = 4 462 810, 61.7% women) for CVD and 27 observational studies (N = 1 760 774, 64.4% women) for diabetes were included. Red meat consumption was positively associated with CVD [hazard ratio (HR) 1.11, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05 to 1.16 for unprocessed red meat (per 100 g/day increment); 1.26, 95% CI 1.18 to 1.35 for processed red meat (per 50 g/day increment)], CVD subtypes, T2DM, and GDM. The associations with stroke and T2DM were higher in western settings, with no difference by sex. CONCLUSION: Unprocessed and processed red meat consumption are both associated with higher risk of CVD, CVD subtypes, and diabetes, with a stronger association in western settings but no sex difference. Better understanding of the mechanisms is needed to facilitate improving cardiometabolic and planetary health.
