Objetivo: analisar os fatores intervenientes na gerência do cuidado de enfermagem à criança hospitalizada com cardiopatia reumática. Método: estudo descritivo-exploratório com abordagem qualitativa, que utilizou a Teoria Fundamentada em Dados e o Interacionismo Simbólico, respectivamente, como referencial metodológico e teórico. A coleta de dados foi realizada em uma instituição especializada em atendimento cardiológico, no munícipio do Rio de Janeiro. Foram entrevistados 19 profissionais de enfermagem através de um roteiro semiestruturado. Resultado: emergiram os seguintes fatores intervenientes na prática da gerência do cuidado: condição socioeconômica da família, comportamento da criança, condições de trabalho, comunicação ineficaz, educação permanente, trabalho em equipe e experiência profissional. Conclusão: os resultados apontam para a necessidade de proposição de estratégias de ação e interação que facilitem a prática gerencial de cuidado à criança com cardiopatia reumática e sua família face aos fatores intervenientes identificados.


Objective: to analyze the factors involved in the management of nursing care for children hospitalized with rheumatic heart disease. Method: this is a descriptive-exploratory study with a qualitative approach, which used Data-Based Theory and Symbolic Interactionism, respectively, as methodological, and theoretical references. Data was collected in an institution specializing in cardiac care in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Nineteen nursing professionals were interviewed using a semi-structured script. Result: the following intervening factors in the practice of care management emerged: the family's socioeconomic status, the child's behavior, working conditions, ineffective communication, continuing education, teamwork, and professional experience. Conclusion: the results point to the need to propose strategies for action and interaction that facilitate management practice in caring for children with rheumatic heart disease and their families, given the intervening factors identified.

La recolección de datos se realizó en una institución especializada en atención cardiológica, en la ciudad de Río de Janeiro. Fueron entrevistados 19 profesionales de enfermería mediante un cuestionario semiestructurado. Resultado: surgieron los siguientes factores intervinientes en la práctica de la gestión del cuidado: condición socioeconómica de la familia, comportamiento del niño, condiciones de trabajo, comunicación ineficaz, educación continua, trabajo en equipo y experiencia profesional. Conclusión: los resultados indican que es necesario proponer estrategias de acción e interacción que faciliten la práctica de la gestión del cuidado al niño con cardiopatía reumática y a sus familiares, con respecto a los factores intervinientes identificados.

Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) play an essential role in the Amazon region, contributing to the integration between biodiversity conservation and the enhancement of the bioeconomy. This study has examined the scope of NTFP research in the Amazon and pinpointed areas lacking scientific insight. From the 219 publications initially identified, 146 satisfied established inclusion criteria based on the methodology employed and the results achieved. It was found that the inaugural publication indexed by Scopus on Amazonian NTFPs dates to 1992. It was found that the inaugural publication indexed by Scopus on Amazonian NTFPs dates to 1992. Despite the extensive body of research, there is a noticeable deficit in studies addressing legal and regulatory frameworks within the NTFP production chain and public policy development. Research has predominantly concentrated on production, distribution, management, and economic aspects, often neglecting the social, normative, and political dimensions. Advancing the bioeconomy value chains in the Amazon necessitates empowering local communities to derive economic benefits from biodiversity. However, recognizing the complexity of these communities' relationships with the forest is important. Their interaction with the forest extends beyond economic considerations, embracing cultural, subsistence, and spiritual connections. These insights underscore the necessity for a comprehensive and sustainable approach to NTFP management in the Amazon, ensuring that biodiversity conservation and local community empowerment are integrally pursued. This holistic perspective is vital for fostering a resilient bioeconomy in the region.

BACKGROUND: Mass COVID-19 immunisation campaigns altered the pandemic's progress by protecting the vaccine recipient and reducing transmission. However, evidence for indirect vaccine effectiveness (IVE) is limited due to the difficulties of ascertaining this type of protection. METHODS: Using linked national Brazilian databases, we adapted the test-negative design to evaluate the IVE against symptomatic infection. We analysed data from January 1-December 1, 2021 (Pre-Omicron) and January 1-April 30, 2022 (Omicron BA.1 and BA.2). We compared the probability of testing positive across various levels of second ancestral-strain monovalent COVID-19 vaccine dose coverage, including only unvaccinated individuals in the main analysis and both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals in additional analyses. Sensitivity analysis focused on children under 12, who did not have access to COVID-19 vaccines during the pre-omicron-period. FINDINGS: We included 11,039,315 unvaccinated individuals tested during the pre-omicron study period. IVE was minimal until 30% vaccination coverage (<10%), then it follows a dose-dependent pattern, peaking at 37.7(95%CI:32-42.8) at 70% coverage. For children under 12, IVE peaked at 59.8%(95%CI:52.7-65.9) at 70% coverage. During Omicron-period, IVE remained constant at about 5% across all comparisons. INTERPRETATION: Our findings confirm that high vaccination coverage using vaccines that prevent infection indirectly protects the community. However, IVE was substantially higher during the pre-Omicron period.

The evolution of hematophagy involves a series of adaptations that allow blood-feeding insects to access and consume blood efficiently while managing and circumventing the host's hemostatic and immune responses. Mosquito, and other insects, utilize salivary proteins to regulate these responses at the bite site during and after blood feeding. We investigated the function of Anopheles gambiae salivary apyrase (AgApyrase) in regulating hemostasis in the mosquito blood meal and in Plasmodium transmission. Our results demonstrate that salivary apyrase, a known inhibitor of platelet aggregation, interacts with and activates tissue plasminogen activator, facilitating the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin, a human protease that degrades fibrin and facilitates Plasmodium transmission. We show that mosquitoes ingest a substantial amount of apyrase during blood feeding, which reduces coagulation in the blood meal by enhancing fibrin degradation and inhibiting platelet aggregation. AgApyrase significantly enhanced Plasmodium infection in the mosquito midgut, whereas AgApyrase immunization inhibited Plasmodium mosquito infection and sporozoite transmission. This study highlights a pivotal role for mosquito salivary apyrase for regulation of hemostasis in the mosquito blood meal and for Plasmodium transmission to mosquitoes and to the mammalian host, underscoring the potential for strategies to prevent malaria transmission.

AIM: To determine whether the I-DECIDED assessment and decision tool enhances peripheral intravenous catheter assessment, care and decision-making in paediatrics. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental, interrupted time-series study. METHODS: An interrupted time-series study was conducted in a paediatric inpatient unit at a public teaching hospital in Brazil. The participants were patients aged less than 15 years old with a peripheral intravenous catheter, and their parents or guardians. Data were collected between January and July 2023, encompassing six time points, three pre-intervention and three post-intervention. Evaluation data were based on the I-DECIDED tool, including idle devices, dressings, complications, patient/family awareness, hand hygiene, disinfection and documentation. RESULTS: We conducted 585 peripheral intravenous catheter observations, with 289 in the pre-intervention phase and 296 in the post-intervention phase, inserted in 65 hospitalised children, 30 in the pre-intervention phase and 35 in the post-intervention phase. After the intervention, reductions were observed in the number of idle catheters, substandard dressings and complications. Patients and family members reported an increase in device assessment, hand hygiene and peripheral intravenous catheter disinfection. Additionally, there was an increase in documentation of decision-making performed by nurses and nursing technicians/assistants. CONCLUSION: Implementation of the I-DECIDED assessment and decision tool in a paediatric unit significantly improved the assessment, care and decision-making regarding peripheral intravenous catheters. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Opportunity to enhance practice standards, elevate the quality of care provided to paediatric patients, contribute to improved patient outcomes, advance evidence-based practice in vascular access management and enhance patient experience through increased involvement in care. IMPACT: To influence clinical practice and healthcare policies aimed at improving peripheral intravenous catheter care and patient safety in paediatric settings. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution to the design of this study.

Objective: Real-world data for patients with endometrial cancer (EC) are limited, particularly in Latin America. We present treatment pattern findings from ECHOS-A - Endometrial Cancer Health Outcomes Study in Argentina. Materials and methods: A retrospective study using clinical data from privately insured patients with EC diagnosed from 2010 to 2019. Index (diagnosis proxy) was first date of an EC-related health term or treatment. Demographics, clinical characteristics, and FIGO staging were described. Disease progression and survival were assessed until study end, loss to follow-up, or death. Results: Of 805 patients with EC, 77.4 % (n = 623/805) received any treatment and 22.6 % (n = 182/805) received none. Among those treated, 31.8 % (n = 198/623) had first-line (1L) systemic therapy, and 45.5 % (n = 90/198) proceeded to second-line (2L) therapy. Mean follow-up was 33.6 (SD 31.8) months. Of those receiving any treatment, 87.3 % (n = 544/623) had FIGO stage data (I, 62.9 %; II, 18.6 %; III, 13.6 %; IV, 5.0 %). Treatment by class in 1L and 2L, respectively, were platinum chemotherapy, 73.7 %, 36.7 %; non-platinum chemotherapy, 73.7 %, 62.2 %; immunotherapy, 1.0 %, 11.1 %; hormone therapy, 17.7 %, 26.7 %. Carboplatin/paclitaxel was the most frequent 1L (52.5 %) and 2L (14.4 %) regimen. Mean time to progression was 14.1 (SD 16.3) and 8.8 (SD 8.3) months in 1L and 2L, respectively. Adjusted 1- to 5-year risk of progression/death was 46.5-77.5 % and 65.0-86.2 % in 1L and 2L, respectively. Conclusions: Approximately one-quarter of patients with EC received no treatment, and approximately two-thirds were not treated with 1L systemic therapy. Efforts to better understand the reasons for these treatment patterns are crucial for improving patient outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Increasing the levels of physical activity (PA) is widely recommended for people with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). However, studies investigating the patterns of PA and adherence to PA guidelines using objective measures are lacking. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to examine the patterns of PA and adherence to PA guidelines among patients with CVI. A secondary aim was to identify whether adherence to PA recommendations differed according to patients' sociodemographic and clinical characteristics. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 96 patients with CVI with Clinical-Etiology-Anatomy-Pathology (CEAP) C3 to C6 (69.1% women 59 ± 11 years; 51.5% C5-C6 on CEAP classification). Objective time spent in PA was measured by a triaxial accelerometer. To examine adherence to PA guidelines, patients were grouped as meeting (or) the recommendations if they had at least 150 min/week of moderate to vigorous PA. Sociodemographic and clinic characteristics were obtained by self-report. Binary logistic regression was employed to examine whether sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were associated with adherence to PA guidelines. T-tests were employed to compare PA levels at different intensities according to patients' age. RESULTS: Patients spent an average of 311.4 ± 91.5 min/week, 42.1 ± 28.0 min/week, and 19.8 ± 17.8 min/week in low-light PA, high-light PA, and moderate-to-vigorous PA, respectively. The proportion of patients meeting PA recommendations was 36.2%, and older patients had lower odds (OR = 0.94; 95%CI: 0.89 to 0.99). Additional analysis reinforced that by showing lower time in high-light PA (51.2 ± 30.0 min/day vs. 31.9 ± 21.8 min/day; p = .001) and moderate-to-vigorous PA (24.3 ± 15.8 min/day vs. 14.8 ± 18.8 min/day; p = .012) among older patients than their peers younger. CONCLUSION: Our findings showed that 36,2% of CVI patients met PA recommendations, with lower odds found among older patients. Public health interventions to enhance PA engagement among CVI patients should prioritize those who are older.

The use of exotic grasses of African origin for pastures in Brazil has been a major advancement in livestock production, but little is known about the responses of these grasses to nitrogen fertilizers associated with shading. In this study, the morphogenetic, structural, and leaf anatomical characteristics of Megathyrsus maximus cultivars' Tamani and Quênia were investigated as a function of N dose and shade. Morphogenetic and structural characteristics and leaf anatomy were studied under three shading levels (0, 30, and 50 %) and four N doses (0, 100, 200, and 300 kg N ha-1) to simulate growth in a silvopastoral system. When comparing the cultivars, Quênia was more efficient in terms of phyllochron up to fertilization with 100 kg N ha-1. The leaf senescence rate of Tamani was higher than that of Quênia at the 30 and 50 % shade levels. The total area (TA) occupied by leaf tissues decreased in Quênia as a function of the increase in N fertilization, whereas the TA of Tamani did not change. The thickness of the adaxial epidermis was greater in Quênia (0.68 µm) than in Tamani (0.50 µm) when not fertilized. The area occupied by the mesophyll was greater in both cultivars when they received fertilization equivalent to 300 kg N ha-1. Quênia grass has a smaller phyllochron than Tamani grass, due to the rapid reconstruction of its photosynthetic apparatus, especially when it receives higher levels of nitrogen fertilization. However, Tamani grass has a greater distribution of plant tissues. The mesophyll area is larger in Tamani grass due to the greater presence of chloroplasts, which facilitates digestion by animals. The Tamani modified the leaf anatomical tissues more significantly in relation to shading, whereas the Quênia modified them in relation to N fertilization, which reinforces the suggestion of a more appropriate use of Tamani in silvopastoral systems.

Disintegrins are a class of peptides found in snake venom that inhibit the activity of integrins, which are essential cell adhesion receptors in tumor progression and development. In this work, moojecin, a RGD disintegrin, was isolated from Bothrops moojeni snake venom, and its antitumor potential in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) HL-60 and THP-1 cells was characterized. The isolation was performed using a C18 reverse-phase column in two chromatographic steps, and its molecular mass is 7417.84 Da. N-terminal and de novo sequencing was performed to identify moojecin. Moojecin did not show cytotoxic or antiproliferative activity in THP-1 and HL-60 at tested concentrations, but it exhibited significant antimigratory activity in both cell lines, as well as inhibition of angiogenesis in the tube formation assay on Matrigel in a dose-dependent manner. A stronger interaction with integrin αVß3 was shown in integrin interaction assays compared to α5ß1, and the platelet aggregation assay indicated an IC50 of 5.039 µg/mL. Preliminary evaluation of disintegrin toxicity revealed no incidence of hemolysis or cytotoxic effects on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) across the tested concentrations. Thus, this is the first study to report the isolation, functional and structural characterization of a disintegrin from B. moojeni venom and bring a new perspective to assist in AML treatment.

Third-generation biofuels from microalgae are becoming necessary for sustainable energy. In this context, this study explores the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae biomass grown in wastewater, consisting of 30% Chlorella vulgaris, 69% Tetradesmus obliquus, and 1% cyanobacteria Limnothrix planctonica, and the subsequent upgrading of the produced bio-oil. The novelty of the work lies in integrating microalgae cultivation in wastewater with HTL in a biorefinery approach, enhanced using a catalyst to upgrade the bio-oil. Different temperatures (300, 325, and 350 °C) and reaction times (15, 30, and 45 min) were tested. The bio-oil upgrading occurred with a Cobalt-Molybdenum (CoMo) catalyst for 1 h at 375 °C. Post-HTL, although the hydrogen-to-carbon (H/C) ratio decreased from 1.70 to 1.38-1.60, the oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio also decreased from 0.39 to 0.079-0.104, and the higher heating value increased from 20.6 to 36.4-38.3 MJ kg-1. Palmitic acid was the main component in all bio-oil samples. The highest bio-oil yield was at 300 °C for 30 min (23.4%). Upgrading increased long-chain hydrocarbons like heptadecane (5%), indicating biofuel potential, though nitrogenous compounds such as hexadecanenitrile suggest a need for further hydrodenitrogenation. Aqueous phase, solid residues, and gas from HTL can be used for applications such as biomass cultivation, bio-hydrogen, valuable chemicals, and materials like carbon composites and cement additives, promoting a circular economy. The study underscores the potential of microalgae-derived bio-oil as sustainable biofuel, although further refinement is needed to meet current fuel standards.

Microalgae have emerged as a promising source of biomass to produce renewable biofuels due to their ability to synthesize high-energy density compounds of commercial interest. This study proposes an approach for pilot-scale oil extraction, purification by fractional distillation, hydrocarbon characterization by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS), evaluation of physicochemical parameters of the produced hydrocarbons, preliminary cost analysis, and challenges and future opportunities for green diesel on a commercial scale. Here, the microalgae Tetradesmus obliquus was cultivated in 12 m³ photobioreactors using biodigested swine waste as a culture medium. The resulting biomass was subjected to drying and harvesting, followed by oil extraction using a hot solvent extraction method, followed by distillation to purify the compounds. Three different extraction and distillation experiments were conducted, each using different solvent combinations. The results obtained revealed that extraction with a solvent blend, composed of hexane and ethanol, provided more significant yields compared to extraction with pure hexane. GC-MS analysis showed the presence of alkanes and alkenes in the oil samples, and the proportion of solvent used in the extraction directly influenced the production of alkanes. Additionally, specific hydrocarbons such as 4-methyl-1-decene, 8-heptadecene, 1-pentadecene, 9-heneicosene, and 2-dodecene were identified. The evaluation of the physicochemical parameters demonstrated that the calorific value of the distilled oil samples is within the range of typical values for petroleum diesel. However, it was observed that the distilled oil samples had higher sulfur content compared to conventional diesel. Regarding the cost analysis, it was found that it varies depending on the experimental conditions. In particular, the process using a solvent mixture of 70% hexane and 30% ethanol proved to be more economical than the others, since it extracted a greater quantity of oil with a lower initial biomass requirement. In summary, this microalgae-derived hydrocarbon production process is promising and offers insights for compound purification and future biofuel applications.

In this study, four Brazilian clays (Bofe, Verde-lodo, commercial Fluidgel, and expanded commercial vermiculite) were evaluated for their adsorptive capacity and removal percentage in relation to different toxic metals (Ni2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, and Cu2+). The best results were obtained by expanded vermiculite, with cadmium removal reaching values of 95%. The most promising clay was modified by the sodification process, and the metal cadmium was used to evaluate the ion exchange process. The clays expanded vermiculite (EV) and VNa-sodified vermiculite were evaluated by equilibrium study at 25, 35, and 45 °C. At 25 °C, EV obtained a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.368 mmol/g and sodified vermiculite 0.480 mmol/g, which represents an improvement of 30.4% in modified clay capacity. At 45 °C, the sodified vermiculite reached 0.970 mmol/g adsorption capacity. The Langmuir, Redlich-Peterson Freundlich, and Dubinin-Raduskevich models were adjusted to the results. Langmuir provided the best fit among the models. The thermodynamic quantities (ΔS, ΔH, and ΔG) demonstrated that the process is spontaneous and endothermic and the metal is captured by physisorption and chemisorption in the studied temperature range. For the ion exchange equilibrium, the binary Langmuir and binary Langmuir-Freundlich models were adjusted to the expanded vermiculite and sodified vermiculite isotherms, respectively. Both models were predictive. Thermal analysis indicated good heat resistance even after material modification. The apparent and real densities demonstrated that after each treatment or contamination, the clayey material undergoes contraction in its structure. An improved efficiency of the adsorbent was found after sodification.

Ontogenetic sexual dimorphism is observed in different primate species, with ecological and evolutionary relationships explaining this pattern. Understanding the growth of the southern brown howler monkey elucidates not only the ecology and evolution but also contributes to conservation projects for this species. Throughout 20 years of the Centro de Pesquisas Biológicas de Indaial-Projeto Bugio, Brazil, we collected morphological data on 105 howlers of the Alouatta guariba species to identify the growth differences between ontogenetic categories and sexes and generate a growth curve to estimate the age of rescued individuals. Linear measurements were employed to obtain body length as well as the dimensions of the head and limbs. All individuals were also weighed to obtain body mass. We assessed growth rate and duration using allometric analysis based on the individuals' ages. We compared growth rate and duration among infant, juvenile, and adult howlers and between sexes. We provide growth curves for body size for both sexes using the Von Bertalanffy model. Infants have accelerated growth rate in comparison to the juveniles and adults, with no differences between sexes in establishing body length at this ontogenetic stage. Males have a prolonged development duration from the juvenile stage, reaching adulthood later than females, which explains the body length differences found in this species. Variables of head and limbs analyzed also showed differences in growth rate and duration, but not so consistently among ontogenetic stages. Mass was not a good variable to understand the growth differences of the animals, since many arrived feeble in the project and may have lost mass due to different circumstances in old age. Therefore, growth curves were obtained only for body length, allowing the estimation of the age of these animals when rescued from the wild to more effectively provide needed care in captivity.

BACKGROUND: Detecting and foreseeing pathogen dispersion is crucial in preventing widespread disease transmission. Human mobility is a fundamental issue in human transmission of infectious agents. Through a mobility data-driven approach, we aimed to identify municipalities in Brazil that could comprise an advanced sentinel network, allowing for early detection of circulating pathogens and their associated transmission routes. METHODS: In this modelling and validation study, we compiled a comprehensive dataset on intercity mobility spanning air, road, and waterway transport from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (2016 data), National Transport Confederation (2022), and National Civil Aviation Agency (2017-23). We constructed a graph-based representation of Brazil's mobility network. The Ford-Fulkerson algorithm was used to rank the 5570 Brazilian cities according to their suitability as sentinel locations, allowing us to predict the most suitable locations for early detection and to track the most likely trajectory of a newly emerged pathogen. We also obtained SARS-CoV-2 genetic data from Brazilian municipalities during the early stage (Feb 25-April 30, 2020) of the virus's introduction and the gamma (P.1) variant emergence in Manaus (Jan 6-March 1, 2021), for the purposes of model validation. FINDINGS: We found that flights alone transported 79·9 million (95% CI 58·3-101·4 million) passengers annually within Brazil during 2017-22, with seasonal peaks occurring in late spring and summer, and road and river networks had a maximum capacity of 78·3 million passengers weekly in 2016. By analysing the 7 746 479 most probable paths originating from source nodes, we found that 3857 cities fully cover the mobility pattern of all 5570 cities in Brazil, 557 (10·0%) of which cover 6 313 380 (81·5%) of the mobility patterns in our study. By strategically incorporating mobility patterns into Brazil's existing influenza-like illness surveillance network (ie, by switching the location of 111 of 199 sentinel sites to different municipalities), our model predicted that mobility coverage would have a 33·6% improvement from 4 059 155 (52·4%) mobility patterns to 5 422 535 (70·0%) without expanding the number of sentinel sites. Our findings are validated with genomic data collected during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic period. Our model accurately mapped 22 (51%) of 43 clade 1-affected cities and 28 (60%) of 47 clade 2-affected cities spread from São Paulo city, and 20 (49%) of 41 clade 1-affected cities and 28 (58%) of 48 clade 2-affected cities spread from Rio de Janeiro city, Feb 25-April 30, 2020. Additionally, 224 (73%) of the 307 suggested early-detection locations for pathogens emerging in Manaus corresponded with the first cities affected by the transmission of the gamma variant, Jan 6-16, 2021. INTERPRETATION: By providing essential clues for effective pathogen surveillance, our results have the potential to inform public health policy and improve future pandemic response efforts. Our results unlock the potential of designing country-wide clinical sample collection networks with mobility data-informed approaches, an innovative practice that can improve current surveillance systems. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of Araucaria sp. brown propolis (ABP) against trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats. METHODS: Animals received vehicle (1% DMSO, 1 ml/kg) or hydroalcoholic extract of ABP (hydroalcoholic extract of Araucaria sp. brown propolis (HEABP), 30, 100, and 300 mg/kg) orally, or dexamethasone (25 mg/kg, s.c.) for 5 days. On day 4, the animals received intracolonic TNBS (150 mg/kg), on day 6 they were euthanized. The weight of the animals, the macroscopic and microscopic colonic damage, reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and the activity of glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) were measured in colon homogenate. The action of HEABP and two isolated compounds in neutrophil migration was recorded. KEY FINDINGS: HEABP (100 and 300 mg/kg), but not dexamethasone, decreased colonic lesion, and increased colonic mucin staining. In parallel, HEABP decreased MDA and restored GSH levels and the activity of SOD, CAT, and GST in the colon. A dose-dependent inhibition of MPO activity was observed (LogIC50 = 1.9). Moreover, HEBPA and the junicedric and abietic acids inhibited the neutrophil chemotaxis in vitro and HEBPA reduced neutrophil migration in vivo. CONCLUSION: HEABP may be promising in the therapies for inflammatory bowel diseases, reducing oxidative and inflammatory damage, especially mediated by neutrophils.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: to map scientific evidence regarding the use of local pressure devices in pain relief during injection procedures in patients. METHODS: scoping review, following the recommendations of the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis and PRISMA-ScR, with searches conducted in the PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS, and PsycINFO databases, without temporal restrictions and with a cutoff date of March 2023. RESULTS: a total of 1,514 studies were identified, with 20 articles included in the final sample. The ShotBlocker® device was utilized during subcutaneous and intramuscular injections in children and adults, proving beneficial in reducing pain, anxiety, and fear associated with the procedure. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: the ShotBlocker® is a low-cost, easy-to-use device that can enhance nursing clinical practice during painful procedures. However, studies involving the Brazilian Pikluc® device are scarce. Further research involving both local pressure devices is recommended.
