RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Five-year survival in squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary antrum is low. This article examines the results of various approaches to treatment as given in our hospital in past 26 years. METHODS: From 1979 to 2005, 379 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of maxillary antrum managed with curative intent were studied. Twenty-eight patients had T2, 237 patients had T3, and 114 had T4 tumors. The N classification was N0 in 316 patients, N1 in 21 patients, N2a in 28 patients and N2b in 14 patients. Treatment to the primary site comprised of surgery (Sx) and radiation therapy (RT) in 284 patients, RT alone in 57 patients and chemotherapy (CTx) with radiotherapy in 38 patients. RESULTS: There was a difference in survival between patients who underwent Sx with RT compared with patients who received RT alone or CTx with RT. The most common pattern of recurrence was in the primary site, 187 (49.3%) patients. Local control at 3 and 5 years was 71% and 63.8% respectively in Sx with RT, 31.6% and 28% respectively in RT, and 28.9% and 26% in CTx with RT group. CONCLUSIONS: The type of treatment to the primary site is an important determinant of survival and local control. Surgery with radiation is a better treatment option.

RESUMEN

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is associated with polymorphisms of the dopamine D(3), serotonin 2A and 2C receptors (DRD3, HTR2A and HTR2C, respectively). This study investigated the possible relationship between TD and the polymorphisms Ser9Gly (DRD3), 102T>C (HTR2A), -1438G>A(HTR2A) and Cys23Ser (HTR2C) in African-Caribbean inpatients. One hundred and twenty-six patients under chronic antipsychotic treatment were genotyped. The assessment of TD was carried out with the abnormal involuntary movement scale (AIMS). The relationships between the carriership of the least frequent alleles and the respective orofaciolingual dyskinesia (TDof) (sum of the items 1-4 of the AIMS), limb-truncal dyskinesia (TDlt) (sum of items 5-7 of the AIMS) and TD (sum of items 1-7 of the AIMS) were analyzed with ANCOVA, comparing means with age as a covariate and stratification for carriers and non-carriers of the mutations. In addition, we conducted pre-planned t-tests to compare AIMS values of carriers of the combinations of alleles versus the corresponding non-carriers. In the study population, females with 9Ser carriership exhibited higher AIMS values than non-carriers. Male subjects with 9Ser carriership in combination with 23Ser or -1438A carriership exhibited higher AIMS values. In male patients also, the combination of 23Ser and -1438A carriership increased TD. The study clearly shows that the African-Caribbean population differs from the Caucasian population with regard to the association of TD with the polymorphisms studied and suggests that the association of TD with the studied polymorphisms of the 5-HT(2C) and probably of the 5-HT(2A) receptor are the result of a changed susceptibility of the patients, independent of the action of the antipsychotics on these receptors.

RESUMEN

Fibrillar structures, originating from the plant cell wall in the intercellular spaces of leaves of ;Red Kidney' bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., engulfed a saprophytic bacterium, Pseudomonas putida, after its initial attachment to the host walls. Phytopathogenic bacteria, Pseudomonas phaseolicola and Pseudomonas tomato, did not adhere to the plant cell wall nor were they encapsulated. Bean lectins may be involved in the attachment and encapsulation processes.

RESUMEN

The binding of concanavalin A (Con A) to the cell surface of zoospores and cysts of Phytophthora palmivora was studied by radiometry (125I-Con A), ultraviolet microscopy (fluorescein-Con A) and electron microscopy peroxidase-diaminobenzidine technique). Zoospores were found to secrete during the early stages of encystment a Con A-binding material susceptible to trypsin digestion. This glycoprotein is contained in the so-called peripheral vesicles and is probably responsible for the adhesion of the encysting zoospores to solid surfaces.

RESUMEN

Purified preparations of chitin synthetase (EC 2.4.1.16; UDP-2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose:chitin 4-beta-acetamidodeoxyglucosyltransferase), capable of forming microfibrils in vitro, were isolated from yeast cells of Mucor rouxii. Chitin synthetase was obtained either by substrate-induced liberation of bound enzyme (54,000 x g pellet) or by isolation of unbound enzyme present in the 54,000 x g supernatant of a cell-free extract. Both preparations contained ellipsoidal granules from about 350 to 1000 A diameter. Many granules exhibited a marked depression. No typical unit membrane profiles appeared in thin sections of glutaraldehyde/OsO4-fixed samples. Upon incubation with substrate and activators, chitin microfibrils were produced. The microfibrils were often found intimately associated with granules. The most common configurations were: a microfibril with a granule at one end, or two microfibrils "arising" from the same granule. These findings lend support to the granule hypothesis for the elaboration of cell wall microfibrils by end-synthesis.

RESUMEN

Zoospores of Phytophthora palmivora adhered to a plastic film surface were examined by electron microscopy. Three stages of adhesion were compared: (1) non-adhesive, unencysted zoospores, (2) adhered incipient cysts, and (3) adhered mature cysts. Thin sections of incipient cysts revealed cells attached to the film surface through the partially discharged contents of the so-called peripheral vesicles; this seems to be the first step in cell adhesion. In mature cysts, the adhesive appeared to have been compacted into an electron-dense deposit binding the cyst wall to the plastic surface. The adhesion zone was also examined in face view after lysing attached incipient cysts with sodium dodecyl sulphate. Cyst wall microfibrils were seen together with an amorphous substance (presumably the adhesive material). The microfibrils were in various stages of formation. Seemingly, adhesion and microfibril formation take place concurrently. The possibility was considered that the material contained in the peripheral vesicles serves in both cell adhesion and microfibril elaboration.
