Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) are one of the most impactful pests to human society, both as a nuisance and a potential vector of human and animal pathogens. Mosquito larvae develop in still aquatic environments. Eliminating these habitats near high human density or managing them to reduce the suitability for mosquitoes will reduce mosquito populations in these human environments and decrease the overall negative impact of mosquitoes on humans. One common source of standing water in urban and suburban environments is the water that pools in stormwater control measures. Previous studies have shown that some stormwater control measures generate large numbers of mosquitoes while others harbor none, and the reason for this difference remains unclear. Our study focuses on elucidating the factors that cause a stormwater control measure to be more or less suitable for mosquitoes. During the summers of 2021 and 2022, we collected and identified mosquito larvae from thirty stormwater control measures across central Ohio to assess variation in mosquito abundance and diversity among sites. Our goal was to determine if specific types of stormwater control measures (retention ponds, detention ponds, or constructed wetlands) harbored different abundances of mosquitoes or different community structures. We also assessed environmental parameters of these sites to elucidate their effects on mosquito abundance and diversity. Overall, we recorded the highest number of mosquito larvae and species in constructed wetlands. However, these sites were dominated by the innocuous species, Culex territans. Conversely, detention ponds held fewer mosquitoes but a higher proportion of known vector species, including Culex pipiens and Aedes vexans. The total number of mosquitoes across all sites was correlated with higher vegetation, more shade, lower water temperatures, and lower pH, suggesting stormwater control measures with these features may also be hotspots for mosquito proliferation.

The threat of bioterrorism has spurred research on the decontamination and containment of different agents. Anthrax [causative agent Bacillus anthracis (Ba)] is a disease that can lead to severe infections within human and animals, particularly when inhaled. This research investigated the use of spore-contaminated simulated runoff events into stormwater control measures (SCMs), which are designed to retain and improve the quality of runoff and may have the potential to filter and contain the spores. In this study, the effectiveness of a bioretention cell (BRC) and high flow media filter (HFMF) in Huron, Ohio, were evaluated for removal of Bacillus globigii (Bg) spores (a harmless cognate of Ba). Three 4-8 mm simulated runoff events were created for each SCM using a fire hydrant and Bg spores were injected into the runoff upstream of the SCM inlets. The BRC significantly (p < 0.001) outperformed the HFMF in reducing Bg concentrations and loads, with an average load reduction of 1.9 log (∼99% reduction) compared to 0.4 (∼60% reduction), respectively. A probable critical design factor leading to these differences was the infiltration rate of the media and subsequent retention time within the filters, which was supported by similar disparities in suspended solids reductions. Differences in spore removal may also have been due to particle size distribution of the HFMF, which was more gravelly than the bioretention cell. At 3 and 6 months after the-simulated runoff tests, soil samples taken from both SCMs, yielding detectable Bg spores within the top 15 cm of media, with increased spore concentrations where ponding occurred for longer durations during the tests. This suggests that forebays and areas near inlets may be hotspots for spore cleanup in a real-world bioterrorism incident.

BACKGROUND: Attainment of adequate transfer of passive immunity (TPI) is critical to health of calves; however, studies comparing available tools for measurement of TPI in individual beef animals are limited. OBJECTIVES: To report agreement between 4 tests evaluating individual TPI status in beef calves. ANIMALS: One hundred ninety-six beef calves born to cows and heifers presenting for calving management or dystocia. METHODS: Retrospective study to assess serum immunoglobulin (IgG) concentrations via turbidimetric immunoassay (TI), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), serum total protein (TP), and single radial immunodiffusion (RID; reference standard). Test agreement was evaluated using Passing-Bablok regression, Bland-Altman analysis, Cohen's kappa, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves with and without covariate adjustment to determine optimal thresholds. RESULTS: Correlation between RID and test results varied: TI, ρ = 0.757; TP, ρ = 0.715; GGT: ρ = 0.413. For the TI compared to RID, regression analysis identified a constant (intercept = -0.51 [CI: -2.63, 3.05]) and proportional (slope = 1.87 [CI: 1.69, 2.08]) bias. Based on ROC, TI concentrations of ≤9.89 and ≤13.76 g/L, and TP concentrations of ≤5.5 and ≤6.0 g/dL, indicated IgG concentrations <18.0 and <25.0 g/L, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Within this cohort of calves, TI demonstrated the best correlation with RID; however, significant bias was identified which led to frequent underestimation of IgG concentration. Serum total protein demonstrated less correlation with RID but had less misclassification than TI. Both TI and TP demonstrated less correlation for calves that received colostrum replacement prompting clinical awareness of colostrum type when evaluating individual TPI in beef calves.

BACKGROUND: Colostral immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration is critical to the attainment of adequate transfer of passive immunity in cattle, however, studies comparing available tools for measurement of colostral IgG concentration in beef cattle are limited. OBJECTIVES: To report the agreement between 3 commercially available tests for evaluating IgG concentration in beef colostrum. ANIMALS: Two hundred six beef-breed cows hospitalized for calving management or dystocia. METHODS: Retrospective study to assess IgG of whole colostrum measured stall-side via turbidimetric immunoassay (TI) and brix refractometry (BRIX), compared to fat separated (FS) analysis via single radial-immunodiffusion (RID; reference standard), TI-FS and BRIX-FS. Test performance was assessed using Passing Bablock regression, Bland-Altman analysis, and area under the curve to determine optimal thresholds. RESULTS: Correlation between RID and TI-FS, BRIX-FS, or BRIX was similar (Spearman's ρ = 0.717, 0.715, 0.716, respectively) but correlation for TI was poor (ρ = 0.586). Regression analysis identified a substantial constant (-214.75 [CI: -272.03 to -178.07]) and proportional (13.24 [CI: 11.81-15.37]) bias between the RID and TI-FS which was similar for TI. TI-FS concentrations of 28.47, 38.75, and 50.62 g/L, BRIX-FS of ≤21.9%, ≤24.0%, and ≤27.4%, and BRIX of ≤21.3%, ≤23.8%, and ≤26.4% indicated IgG concentrations <50, <100, and <150 g/L, respectively; appropriate cutoffs for TI could not be generated. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Both TI and TI-FS demonstrated a large constant and proportional bias compared to RID; BRIX and BRIX-FS were well correlated with RID and remain a reliable method for estimation of colostral IgG concentration in beef cattle.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) such as benazepril are commonly prescribed in both humans and dogs with heart disease to mitigate the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS); however, the dose-dependent effects of benazepril on comprehensive RAAS components remain unknown. In this study, nine purpose-bred healthy dogs received three different dosages of oral benazepril (0.125 mg/kg, 0.25 mg/kg, or 0.5 mg/kg) in a randomized crossover design following induction of RAAS activation by consuming a low-sodium diet. Blood samples were collected at serial time intervals after benazepril dosing to measure plasma benazeprilat (active metabolite of benazepril) and serum RAAS biomarkers. Blood pressure and echocardiogram were performed at baseline and after each benazepril administration. Time-weighted averages for RAAS biomarkers for 12 h post-dose and hemodynamic variables were compared between dosing groups using Wilcoxon rank-sum testing. Compared to the lowest dosage of benazepril (0.125 mg/kg), the highest dosage (0.5 mg/kg) resulted in lower time-weighted average values of angiotensin (Ang) II (- 38%, P = 0.004), Ang1-5 (- 53%, P = 0.001), ACE-S (surrogate for ACE activity; - 59%, P = 0.0002), and ALT-S (surrogate for alternative RAAS activity; - 22%, P = 0.004), and higher values of AngI (+ 78%, P = 0.014) and PRA-S (surrogate for plasma renin activity; + 58%, P = 0.040). There were no relevant differences between dosing groups for blood pressure or echocardiographic variables. Knowledge of dose-dependent alterations in biomarkers of the classical and alternative RAAS pathways could help inform clinical trials for dosage optimization in both dogs and humans.

Septic synovitis is a critical orthopedic condition in horses. Early intervention is key, with antibiotic therapy typically initiated prior to culture and susceptibility reports becoming available. The pharmacokinetics of several antibiotics have been studied in horses for use in intravenous regional limb perfusion (IVRLP) for septic synovitis, including the carbapenem antibiotic, meropenem. For a variety of factors, some veterinary clinicians may select IVRLP meropenem as therapy for these cases. Meropenem is a vital antibiotic in human medicine, making veterinary use divisive. However, verifying the efficacy of meropenem contrasted to other IVRLP antibiotics is essential for appropriate antimicrobial stewardship. To investigate this, equine patient medical records at a single veterinary teaching hospital were examined. Cases treated with meropenem or gentamicin via IVRLP for septic synovitis were retrospectively analyzed for demographics, diagnostics, treatments, outcomes, and adverse effects. Twenty-three meropenem and 37 gentamicin treated horses were analyzed; demographic information was similar between groups. In the meropenem group, nine horses received meropenem only; the remainder received another antibiotic initially then changed to meropenem. Structures infected included joints (meropenem = 13, gentamicin = 17), tendon sheaths (meropenem = 5, gentamicin = 8) and navicular bursae (meropenem = 2, gentamicin = 6). Overall survival to discharge was 86% (52/60), with meropenem 91% (21/23) and gentamicin 84% (31/37), with no statistically significant differences noted between meropenem or gentamicin groups for overall survival to discharge or outcome after discharge. Twenty-four of 26 bacterial isolates obtained from culture were reported as sensitive to imipenem, a carbapenem antibiotic similar to meropenem. Reported susceptibility to other antibiotics such as ceftiofur (n = 22/26), ampicillin (n = 18/26), amikacin (n = 15/26), or gentamicin (n = 12/26) was also frequently present. In the population of this study, antimicrobial activity augmented with IVRLP using either meropenem or gentamicin both appear to be an effective treatment for septic synovial structures, therefore, less critical antimicrobials may be a viable and more judicious treatment option.

CASE DESCRIPTION: A 9-month-old miniature Hereford heifer was evaluated for a mass on the right inferior eyelid that had progressed in size over 3 months. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Physical examination revealed a firm, ulcerated, pedunculated mass on the right inferior eyelid that extended from the medial quarter to beyond the lateral canthus of the eye. The base of the mass measured 7.4 × 6.7 cm, and the dorsal margin of the base of the mass was approximately 3 mm ventral to the inferior eyelid margin. Histologic evaluation of incisional biopsy specimens from the mass was consistent with fibrosarcoma. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: The mass was surgically resected with care taken to preserve the eyelid margin. The resulting 10 × 8.5-cm surgical wound was treated with adjunct CO2 laser therapy and closed by primary closure at its medial and central aspects and placement of a 4.6 × 2.6-cm lyophilized equine amnion multilayer graft and 2 sheets of 4-ply porcine small intestinal submucosa at its lateral aspect. The grafts were kept moist by alternating topical antimicrobial and artificial tear ointments for 3 weeks. The wound healed without complications, resulting in a functional and aesthetically pleasing outcome despite the development of moderate ectropion at the lateral aspect of the inferior eyelid. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggested that a combination of extracellular matrix scaffolds may be an alternative to extensive skin flaps for management of large dermal wounds, particularly wounds resulting from blepharoplasty where preservation of an eyelid margin is desired.

The discharge of excess nutrients to surface waters causes eutrophication, resulting in algal blooms, hypoxia, degraded water quality, reduced and contaminated fisheries, threats to potable water supplies, and decreases in tourism, cultural activities, and coastal economies. An understanding of the contribution of urban runoff to eutrophication is needed to inform management strategies. More broadly, the seasonality in nutrient concentrations and loads in urban runoff needs further analysis since algal blooms and hypoxia are seasonal in nature. This study quantifies the variation of nutrients and sediment in stormwater runoff across seasons from four urban residential sewersheds located in Columbus, Ohio, USA. An average of 62 runoff events at each sewershed were sampled using automated samplers during stormflow and analyzed for nutrients and total suspended solids (TSS). Spring total nitrogen concentrations had a significantly (p < 0.05) higher median concentration (2.19 mg/L) than fall (1.55 mg/L) and summer (1.50 mg/L). Total phosphorus concentrations were significantly higher in spring (0.22 mg/L) and fall (0.23 mg/L) than summer (0.15 mg/L). TSS concentrations were significantly higher in the spring (74.5 mg/L) and summer (56.5 mg/L) than the fall (34.0 mg/L). In contrast, seasonal loading differences for nutrients or sediment were rare because runoff volume varied in such a way as to offset significant concentration differences and significant seasonality in rainfall intensity. Annual pollutant loadings were similar in magnitude to other residential and even some agricultural runoff studies. Although nutrient loads are the key indicator for determining algal biomass, nutrient concentrations are important for real-time algal growth. Future research efforts should be focused not only on understanding how seasonal urban concentrations and loads impact coastal eutrophication, but also developing improved watershed management focused on critical periods. Improved designs for stormwater control measures need to account for seasonality in pollutant discharge.

Clinical safety data for the use of gastroprotectants in hospitalized ruminants is lacking. In human patients, multiple adverse effects are possible from the use of pantoprazole including hematologic and electrolyte abnormalities as well as anaphylaxis and edema. The medical records of all hospitalized cattle, goats, and sheep administered pantoprazole over an ~5-year period were retrospectively analyzed for adverse effects. Seventy-nine eligible patients were observed. Hypomagnesemia was observed after pantoprazole administration in 10 cattle; however, no significant changes were noted when compared to baseline before pantoprazole administration. Significant changes were noted in serum indicators of hepatic and renal function; however, these represented downward trends that were most likely clinically insignificant. Anaphylaxis after pantoprazole administration was not observed; however, seven cattle displayed edema after pantoprazole administration. Veterinary clinicians should be aware of the potential for hypomagnesemia in hospitalized ruminants being administered pantoprazole and monitor patients accordingly. While these preliminary retrospective results indicate that pantoprazole may be a safe adjunctive therapy in hospitalized ruminants, additional studies are necessary to further determine the safety and toxicity of pantoprazole in ruminants.

Cautery disbudding is a painful procedure performed on goat kids to prevent horn growth that may result in brain injury. Thermal damage to the cerebral cortex of the brain and subsequent neurologic disease is a primary concern. Cautery iron application time may affect transmission of heat to the brain; however, research in this area is scarce. Therefore, the objective of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of iron application time on brain injury of goat kids. A total of six buck and doe kids <9 days of age were obtained from a commercial dairy and transported to an Iowa State University research facility. Kids received a different randomly assigned application time (5, 10, 15, or 20s) on each horn bud. Kids were disbudded using an electric cautery iron (under isoflurane general anesthesia). After a 5-day observation period, the kids were euthanized, and magnetic resonance (MR) images were acquired to evaluate brain injury. Additionally, four of the six kids were presented for gross examination and two kids were selected for histopathologic examination. From the MR images, white matter edema was observed subjacent to four treated areas, representing application times of 5 s (one horn bud), 15 s (one horn bud), and 20 s (two horn buds). With the exception of the horn bud that received 5 s, which had white matter edema restricted to a single gyrus, the remaining three groups had a branching region of edema. No bone abnormalities were identified on any kids. Gross evidence of discoloration and hemorrhage on the cerebral hemispheres was observed on two horn buds that received 20 s, two horn buds that received 15 s, and one horn bud that received 10 s. Microscopic lesions consisting of leptomeningeal and cerebrocortical necrosis were observed in sections of brain from all groups. Lesions were most severe with 20 s. In conclusion, all application times used in this study resulted in some level of brain injury; however, using 15 s or more resulted in more severe and consistent brain injury. These results indicate that extended iron application time may increase the risk of brain injury in cautery disbudded kids.

Modern levels of dental decay worldwide are on the rise. This study aimed to calculate historical rates of decay and compare them with recent figures. To compare the rate of dental decay in East Londoners from a post-medieval burial ground and a published modern sample, a database of human remains held at the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) was interrogated. The resulting numbers of decayed and missing teeth were analysed and compared to the East London Oral Health Inequality study initially undertaken in 2010. A lower decayed/missing/filled teeth (DMFT) score was seen in the post-medieval burials.

The objectives of this study were to evaluate the injection site pathology and determine tissue residue depletion of tulathromycin in calves following pneumatic dart administration and to calculate the associated extralabel withdrawal interval (WDI). Castrated male Holstein calves were injected with ~2.6 mg/kg tulathromycin via pneumatic dart administration. At 1 (n = 2), 6, 12, 18, and 24 d after drug injection (n = 3/time point), calves were euthanized, and muscle, liver, kidney, fat, and injection site samples were harvested and analyzed for tulathromycin concentrations using a LC-MS/MS method. Gross pathology and histopathology evaluations on the injection site samples were also performed. Pneumatic dart administration of tulathromycin caused severe localized lesions of hemorrhage and edema on days 1 and 6, as well as severe pathological reactions in the subcutaneous muscle on days 1, 6, and 12. Slight to moderate reactions were still observed in the majority of the skin or subcutaneous/muscle samples on day 24. Measured tulathromycin concentrations were converted to calculate the concentrations of the marker residue CP-60,300 by dividing a conversion factor of 1.4. The data were used to calculate extralabel WDIs based on the guidelines from U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA). The results showed that tulathromycin concentrations were the highest in the liver (4,877.84 ± 65.33 µg/kg), kidney (5,819.52 ± 1,087.00 µg/kg), muscle (1,717.04 ± 140.35 µg/kg), injection site (51,884.05 ± 7,529.34 µg/kg), and fat (161.69 ± 36.48 µg/kg) at 6, 1, 1, 1, and 1 d, respectively, after treatment. Tulathromycin concentrations remained above the limit of quantification of 5 µg/kg in all tissues at 24 d. The calculated WDIs based on kidney data were 26 d using EMA method, 36 d using FDA method based on CP-60,300 data, and 45 d using FDA method based on tulathromycin data. These results suggest that pneumatic dart administration of tulathromycin causes injection site reactions in calves and an extended WDI is needed. One limitation of this study was the small sample size of 3 that did not meet FDA guideline requirement. Therefore, the calculated WDIs should be considered as preliminary and additional studies that use a larger number of animals and directly measure the concentrations of the marker residue CP-60,300 are needed to make a more conclusive recommendation on the extralabel WDI.

Remote drug delivery (RDD) using pneumatic darts has become more prevalent in situations where cattle handling facilities are not available. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of pneumatic dart delivery and subcutaneous injection of tulathromycin on plasma pharmacokinetics and biomarkers of inflammation, stress, and muscle injury in calves. Twenty-three castrated-male Holstein calves, approximately 10 mo of age with an average weight of 378 ± 6.49 kg, were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups. Calves in the RDD group (n = 15) received 10 mL of tulathromycin (2.42 to 2.93 mg/kg) delivered into the left neck using a Type U 10.0 mL 1.9-cm 14 G Needle pneumatic dart administered with a breech loading projector. With the exception of 1 light weight calf that received 7 mL (2.53 mg/kg), calves in the injection group (INJ) (n = 8) also received 10 mL of tulathromycin (2.34 to 2.68 mg/kg) administered as a single subcutaneous injection in the left neck using a 14 G, 1.9-cm needle and a 12-mL syringe. Serum tulathromycin, cortisol, creatine kinase (CK), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) concentrations were determined in combination with other biomarkers of inflammation including mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT), infrared thermography (IRT), and swelling at the injection site over 432 h after administration. Pneumatic darts failed to deliver the required dose of tulathromycin in 4 of 15 calves evidenced by heavier dart weights post-administration (24 vs. 13.5 g). When these 4 calves were removed from the analysis, calves in the RDD group were found to have a smaller area under the tulathromycin concentration curve (AUC) (P = 0.005) and faster clearance (P = 0.025) compared with the INJ group. Furthermore, the RDD group recorded a greater difference in MNT between the treated and contralateral neck compared with the INJ group at 12 h (P = 0.016), 216 h (P = 0.024), and 288 h (P = 0.0494) after administration. Serum CK was elevated at 24 h (P = 0.03) and AST was greater at 24 h (P = 0.024) and 48 h (P = 0.037) after RDD. Serum cortisol concentrations were also greater at 0.5 h (P = 0.02) after RDD. These findings suggest that RDD is associated with reduced total body exposure to tulathromycin and increased acute stress, muscle damage, and pain at the injection site. Furthermore, the failure of darts to consistently deliver antimicrobial therapy has a negative impact on the welfare of sick animals treated with RDD technologies.

BACKGROUND: The establishment of acute care surgery is rapidly becoming a solution to meet emergency surgical needs. Challenges include competition for emergency surgery opportunities and the ability to economically sustain a practice. METHODS: Clinical activity was measured by reviewing the institutional and practice plan databases. Work relative value units and practice plan collection rates defined clinical activity and revenue. RESULTS: Operative procedures and intensive care unit activity accounted for 52% and 36% of activity, respectively. Although procedures on the digestive tract accounted for half of the operative activity, significant activity was observed in nearly all other systems. Overall clinical productivity remained constant but did demonstrate a 25% increase in operative work relative value units. Current billing activity supports 4.0 clinical full-time equivalents, but estimated collections would cover <73% of physician direct costs. CONCLUSIONS: The authors describe the implementation of an acute care surgery service that combines trauma, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care in an established academic surgery department. Developing a sustainable economic model must include income sources other than patient service revenue.
