RESUMEN

In the pediatric population, foreign bodies within the urinary bladder are uncommon, typically resulting from urethral insertion out of curiosity. Other etiologies include sexual assault, iatrogenic factors, or migration from adjacent sites. Symptoms such as urinary retention, dysuria, increased frequency, decreased volume, nocturia, hematuria, painful erections, and pelvic pain are common. Radiographic imaging in the form of pelvic X-rays, ultrasound and CT scans often aids in diagnosis and making an action plan. Management depends on the object type, size, location and available expertise, often starting with a transurethral approach and resorting to open surgery if necessary. This case report describes a 13-year-old female presenting with severe dysuria and visible hematuria. Initially reporting the accidental insertion of a scarf pin into her vagina, she later admitted to intentionally inserting it. A pelvic radiograph revealed a needle-like object in the pelvis but its location and position were more convincing of its presence in the urinary bladder. A diagnostic cystoscopy was performed which confirmed a scarf pin in the urinary bladder, embedded in its wall. The pin was successfully removed transurethrally using endoscopic forceps.

Food adulteration is a global concern, drawing attention from safety authorities due to its potential health risks. Detecting and categorizing oil adulteration is crucial for consumer safety and food industry integrity. This research explores hyperspectral imaging (HSI) analysis to identify substandard oil adulteration at different stages. Using the non-destructive HSI Specim Fx 10 system, a method for precise and easy imaging-based fraud detection and classification was proposed. The 670 oil samples, including pure (Almond, Mustard, Coconut, Olive) and adulterated (Sunflower, Castor, Liquid Paraffin), were analyzed. The Savitzky-Golay filter preprocessed the images to remove noise and smooth spectral signatures. The oils were identified using various machine learning approaches, including Support Vector Machines, Logistic Regression, Linear Discriminant Analysis, Random Forests, Decision Trees, K-Nearest Neighbors, and Naïve Bayes with Linear Discriminant Analysis excelling in identification. Performance parameters, including precision, recall, F1-score, and overall accuracy, were calculated. The proposed method achieved a validation accuracy of 100%, outperforming numerous state-of-the-art approaches. This study introduces a robust pipeline for effective oil adulteration detection, offering a significant advancement in food safety and quality control.

RESUMEN

Arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM) is an umbrella term encompassing a wide variety of overlapping hereditary and nonhereditary disorders that can result in malignant ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. Cardiac MRI plays a critical role in accurate diagnosis of various ACM entities and is increasingly showing promise in risk stratification that can further guide management particularly in decisions regarding use of implantable cardioverter defibrillator. Genotyping plays an important role in cascade testing but challenges remain due to incomplete penetrance and wide phenotypic variability of ACM as well as the presence of gene-elusive cases.

Introduction: Soil biota plays a crucial role in the terrestrial ecosystem. There is growing momentum to understand the community structure and diversity of total belowground soil biota across large ecological scales. Soil biota follow divergent trends with respect to soil physiochemical properties in different ecosystems; however, little is known about their response to stand development across multiple soil depths in Chinese fir plantations, which is the most important tree species across all over China, popular for its timber production. Objectives: Here, we investigated the community assembly of soil bacteria, fungi, archaea, protists and animals across three different vertical soil profiles (0-10, 10-20, 20-40 cm) using a chronosequence of Chinese fir representing five different stand ages (5, 8, 21, 27, 40 years) in South China. Methods: High throughput illumine Hiseq2500 sequencing. Results: Our results showed that soil biotic communities exhibited a decreasing trend in alpha diversity of bacteria, fungi, protists and animals with increasing soil depth; however, archaea showed an opposite trend. Most abundant soil bacterial, fungal, archaeal, protist and animal classes were Acidobacteriia, Agaricomycetes, Bathyarchaeia, Chlorophyceae and Clitellata, respectively. Correlation of vertical distribution of biotic communities and variations in soil physiochemical properties explained that total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP) and pH were the most influencing factors for changes in soil biotic communities. Although the stand age was a contributing factor for fungal and animal beta diversity, however, as compared to soil depth, it was not dominatingly influencing the structure of other biotic communities. Conclusions: Collectively, these results reveal a new perspective on the vertical variation and distinct response patterns of soil biotic communities at a fine scale across different stand ages of Chinese fir plantations.

Drought is one of the major constraints to rain-fed agricultural production, especially under climate change conditions. Plants evolved an array of adaptive strategies that perceive stress stimuli and respond to these stress signals through specific mechanisms. Abscisic acid (ABA) is a premier signal for plants to respond to drought and plays a critical role in plant growth and development. ABA triggers a variety of physiological processes such as stomatal closure, root system modulation, organizing soil microbial communities, activation of transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene expression, and metabolic alterations. Thus, understanding the mechanisms of ABA-mediated drought responses in plants is critical for ensuring crop yield and global food security. In this review, we highlighted how plants adjust ABA perception, transcriptional levels of ABA- and drought-related genes, and regulation of metabolic pathways to alter drought stress responses at both cellular and the whole plant level. Understanding the synergetic role of drought and ABA will strengthen our knowledge to develop stress-resilient crops through integrated advanced biotechnology approaches. This review will elaborate on ABA-mediated drought responses at genetic, biochemical, and molecular levels in plants, which is critical for advancement in stress biology research.
