RESUMEN

Retrospective study of urinary heroin outcomes of a cohort (123) of patients commenced on a methadone treatment program. Significantly poorer outcomes were associated with urines positive for cocaine (OR 0.69 CI 0.59-0.81) benzodiazepines (OR 0.7 CI 0.53-0.93) with prescribing of low dose methadone (OR 0.65 CI 0.48-0.87), with urines positive for heroin at time of admission (OR 0.74 CI 0.56-0.97) and with behavioural sanctions (OR 0.8, CI 0.65-0.98). Improved outcomes were associated with granting of take away methadone (OR 1.34 CI 1.1-1.62). with an indication of improved outcomes associated with alcohol positive urines (OR 1.34 CI 0.95-1.9) and increased duration of clinic attendance (OR 1.21 CI 0.99-1.47). On multiple regression analysis low dose methadone (0.07 CI 0.01-0.33) prescribing remained negatively associated with urine heroin outcomes.

RESUMEN

This report presents a case of endocarditis due to Haemophilus segnis, which represents a speciation difficulty for the routine laboratory. In this study, a molecular approach provided speciation, which was confirmed phenotypically by a reference laboratory. The use of molecular genotypic analysis is an additional strategy in the investigation of endocarditis. It has applications not only in isolate identification but also in primary detection of infection, particularly in patients whose blood is culture negative by conventional methodologies.

RESUMEN

Significantly greater Dictyocaulus viviparus stage three larval recoveries from herbage samples adjoining first stage larval infected dung pats with Pilobolus, and the effects of biotic and mechanical factors on dung pat integrity supported previous findings. Several meteorological factors including sunshine hours, relative humidity, rain total and wind speed showed significant correlations with growth of Pilobolus on dung surfaces. The influence of monitored variables on the recovery of third stage larvae from herbage and the growth of Pilobolus was modified by height of the sward surrounding the dung pat. Multiple regression analysis showed that 60 per cent of variation in D viviparus third stage larvae recovery from herbage was accounted for by known variables.

RESUMEN

Reduced trichostrongylid infection on herbage and in calves was obtained when first-season calves, grazing a common area of pasture, received low-dosage phenothiazine (PTZ) in two successive years. The average daily dose of PTZ was 7.0 or 10.3 mg kg-1 in the first year and, in the second, between 5.0 and 7.0 mg kg-1. The effect on herbage infection was attributed mainly to ovicidal action. Treatment increased weight gain by 22 and 50 to 60 per cent in the respective seasons. The results suggested a cumulative effect produced by treating calves of successive years. Two calves developed PTZ-induced photosensitivity (corneal opacity) in the first season, and two calves in the second season but in the latter, severe bronchopneumonia was believed to be a predisposing factor. To avoid photosensitivity and still maintain adequate drug activity, the daily intake of PTZ should probably be restricted to around 6 mg kg-1.

RESUMEN

Recoveries of third stage Dicytocaulus viviparus larvae (L3) from Pilobolus species sporangia ranged from 23 per cent at 21 days to 3 per cent after 90 days for sporangia attached to polythene discs positioned on pasture. There was a continuous release of L3 for up to 16 days from sporangia which were placed under conditions simulating those occurring on pasture.

RESUMEN

An involvement of Pilobolus species fungus in the dispersal of Dictyocaulus viviparus third stage larvae from dung to surrounding herbage under Irish conditions was investigated. The presence of Pilobolus kleinii on artificial dung pats containing first stage larvae of D viviparus was associated with a 19-fold increase (P less than 0.05) in numbers of third stage larvae recovered from the surrounding herbage. A subjective examination of natural dung pats showed that the presence of Pilobolus species was significantly correlated with hours of bright sunshine (r = -0.5, P less than 0.01), total rainfall (r = 0.41, P less than 0.05) and the height of herbage surrounding the pats (r = 0.31, P less than 0.001). A multiple regression analysis showed that meteorological parameters and the height of surrounding herbage accounted for 38 per cent of the variation in growth of Pilobolus species on dung pats. The incidence of extensive damage to natural dung pats within five days of deposition, caused by biotic factors, another possible cause of D viviparus third stage larvae dispersal, varied from 0 to 92 per cent of the pats depending on their degree of dryness.
