RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have motor, social communication, and behavioral challenges. During the pandemic, children lost access to face-to-face (F2F) services and had to revert to telehealth (TH) options. We compared the efficacy, fidelity, acceptability, and feasibility of a general motor (GM) intervention using an F2F or telehealth (TH) format. METHODS: Fifteen children with ASD participated in an 8-week program involving gross motor games to promote motor and social communication skills. Differences across TH and F2F formats for motor and socially directed verbalization as well as stakeholder feedback on formats were collected. RESULTS: Gross motor and socially directed verbalization did not differ between the F2F and TH subgroups, and parents and trainers were satisfied with either format. However, TH interventions were longer, had more technological challenges, and required more parental effort. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study support the use of TH as a comparable and viable substitute for F2F interactions for children with ASD.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a serious pulmonary inflammatory disease resulting from excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) which could cause the damage of the alveolar epithelial cells and capillary endothelial cells. Peroxynitrite, as one of short-lived reactive oxygen species, is closely related to the process of ALI. Thus, it is important to monitor the fluctuation of peroxynitrite in living system for understanding the process of ALI. Herein, the novel mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe BHMT was designed to respond to peroxynitrite and pH with distinct fluorescence properties respectively. The absorption spectrum of the probe BHMT exhibited a notable red shift as the pH value declined from 8.8 to 2.6. Upon reaction with peroxynitrite, BHMT had a significant increase of fluorescence intensity (63-fold) with maintaining a detection limit of only 43.7 nM. Furthermore, BHMT could detect the levels of endogenous peroxynitrite and image the intracellular pH in ratiometric channels utilizing cell imaging. In addition, BHMT was successfully applied to revealing the relationship between the peroxynitrite and the extent of ALI. Thus, these results indicated the probe BHMT could be a potential tool for diagnosing the early stage of ALI and revealed the peroxynitrite was likely to be a crucial therapeutic target in ALI treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to assess the effects of social determinants of health (SDOH) and race-ethnicity on readmission and to investigate the potential for geospatial clustering of patients with a greater burden of SDOH that could lead to a higher risk of readmission. DESIGN: A retrospective study of inpatients at five hospitals within Henry Ford Health (HFH) in Detroit, Michigan from November 2015 to December 2018 was conducted. SETTING: This study used an adult inpatient registry created based on HFH electronic health record data as the data source. A subset of the data elements in the registry was collected for data analyses that included readmission index, race-ethnicity, six SDOH variables and demographics and clinical-related variables. PARTICIPANTS: The cohort was composed of 248 810 admission patient encounters with 156 353 unique adult patients between the study time period. Encounters were excluded if they did not qualify as an index admission for all payors based on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service definition. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: The primary outcome was 30-day all-cause readmission. This binary index was identified based on HFH internal data supplemented by external validated readmission data from the Michigan Health Information Network. RESULTS: Race-ethnicity and all SDOH were significantly associated with readmission. The effect of depression on readmission was dependent on race-ethnicity, with Hispanic patients having the strongest effect in comparison to either African Americans or non-Hispanic whites. Spatial analysis identified ZIP codes in the City of Detroit, Michigan, as over-represented for individuals with multiple SDOH. CONCLUSIONS: There is a complex relationship between SDOH and race-ethnicity that must be taken into consideration when providing healthcare services. Insights from this study, which pinpoint the most vulnerable patients, could be leveraged to further improve existing models to predict risk of 30-day readmission for individuals in future work.

The surge in RNA therapeutics has revolutionized treatments for infectious diseases like COVID-19 and shows the potential to expand into other therapeutic areas. However, the typical requirement for ultra-cold storage of mRNA-LNP formulations poses significant logistical challenges for global distribution. Lyophilization serves as a potential strategy to extend mRNA-LNP stability while eliminating the need for ultra-cold supply chain logistics. Although recent advancements have demonstrated the promise of lyophilization, the choice of lyoprotectant is predominately focused on sucrose, and there remains a gap in comprehensive evaluation and comparison of lyoprotectants and buffers. Here, we aim to systematically investigate the impact of a diverse range of excipients including oligosaccharides, polymers, amino acids, and various buffers, on the quality and performance of lyophilized mRNA-LNPs. From the screening of 45 mRNA-LNP formulations under various lyoprotectant and buffer conditions for lyophilization, we identified previously unexplored formulation compositions, e.g., polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in Tris or acetate buffers, as promising alternatives to the commonly used oligosaccharides to maintain the physicochemical stability of lyophilized mRNA-LNPs. Further, we delved into how physicochemical and structural properties influence the functionality of lyophilized mRNA-LNPs. Leveraging high-throughput small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), we showed that there is complex interplay between mRNA-LNP structural features and cellular translation efficacy. We also assessed innate immune responses of the screened mRNA-LNPs in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), and showed minimal alterations of cytokine secretion profiles induced by lyophilized formulations. Our results provide valuable insights into the structure-activity relationship of lyophilized formulations of mRNA-LNP therapeutics, paving the way for rational design of these formulations. This work creates a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of mRNA-LNP properties and in vitro performance change resulting from lyophilization.

We propose a scheme for realizing nonreciprocal microwave photon routing with two cascaded magnon-cavity coupled systems, which work around the exceptional points of a parity-time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonian. An almost perfect nonreciprocal transmission can be achieved with a broad bandwidth, where the transmission for a forward-propagating photon can be flexibly controlled with the backpropagating photon being isolated. The transmission or isolated direction can be reversed via simply controlling the magnetic field direction applied to the magnons. The isolation bandwidth is improved by almost three times in comparison with the device based on a single PT-symmetric system. Moreover, the effect of intrinsic cavity loss and added thermal noises is considered, confirming the experimental feasibility of the nonreciprocal device and potential applications in quantum information processing.

BACKGROUND: Conjunctival prolapse (CP) is an uncommon but challenging condition following maximal levator resection (MLR) and other extensive periorbital procedures. MLR extending beyond the Whitnall's ligament is frequently performed to address severe blepharoptosis with poor levator function (LF). Patients with CP may encounter symptoms such as ocular discomfort, tearing, vision impairment, persistent conjunctival chemosis, lagophthalmos, or exposure keratopathy. Typically, surgical intervention becomes necessary if conservative measures prove to be ineffective; nevertheless, there is no consensus regarding the optimal treatment approach. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to propose a simple sutureless direct excision method and explore the surgical advancements in CP correction through a systematic review. METHODS: Patients with recurrent CP after MLR who underwent sutureless direct excision of the conjunctiva using loupe magnifiers at a tertiary hospital were included in this study. The clinical evolution and surgical results were recorded. PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases were queried following The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) protocol. RESULTS: The comprehensive analysis of 1858 articles identified 88 patients from 24 studies, highlighting that blepharoptosis surgery is predominantly associated with CP (36.6%). Surgically treated CP showed a higher resolution rate compared to those managed conservatively (54.8% vs. 45.2%; p = 0.034). No relapse was observed in patients treated with sutureless direct excision of CP in long-term follow-up. CONCLUSION: We proposed a simple sutureless direct excision technique that offers a straightforward and efficient approach in treating CP, which is particularly suitable for cases requiring excision lengths >16 mm during MLR. Furthermore, stitch removal can be obviated after surgery.

This study aimed to generate localized knowledge by investigating the perceptions and experiences of preadolescent grandchildren and grandparents regarding grandparenting and intergenerational interactions and how these processes were related to the social skills of preadolescents from three ethnic groups in Malaysia. Using a concurrent quantitative-qualitative mixed method research design, Chinese, Malay, and Indian preadolescents (N = 465; ages 9-12 years old; M = 10.27 years; SD = 1.03) from rural areas in Malaysia completed a self-administered quantitative survey; furthermore, 25 grandparents participated in one-on-one interviews. Survey findings showed that preadolescent grandchildren who reported higher grandparental warmth and support had greater social skills, mediated by positive grandparent-grandchildren (GP-GC) relationships. The GP-GC relationship and preadolescent social skills association was stronger for skipped generation compared to three-generation households. Interview findings revealed that grandparents expressed unconditional love and autonomy support in their grandparenting roles by guiding and encouraging their preadolescent grandchildren to make decisions. The GP-GC interactions served as a dynamic force in promoting preadolescents' social skills. By employing a decolonized approach and drawing on the lived experiences of grandparents from three ethnic backgrounds in rural Malaysia, the study provided an understanding of grandparenting practices and their general implications across the three ethnic groups. The interview responses highlighted both commonalities and specificities in grandparenting practices and relationship dynamics shaped by religious, class, and sociocultural dimensions in rural Malaysia.

Aims: We compared the efficacy, fidelity, acceptability, and feasibility of a creative movement (CM) intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), delivered face-to-face (F2F) or through telehealth (TH). Methods: Fifteen children with ASD received the CM intervention F2F or through TH. Motor assessments were used to evaluate effects of F2F and TH interventions on children's motor skills, while video coding was used to assess affect, socially directed verbalization, interpersonal synchrony, and motor coordination during training. Stakeholder feedback and training fidelity data on the intervention were also collected. Results: Children in both subgroups showed similar baseline performance and training-related improvements in motor skills, positive/interested affect, socially directed verbalization, interpersonal synchrony, and dual/multilimb coordination. Parents in the TH subgroup considered the intervention feasible and acceptable; however, they reported greater effort to supervise and redirect their child's attention compared to the F2F subgroup. Trainers for the TH subgroup reported more communication difficulties, technological issues, and longer session lengths, but found greater parental involvement compared to the F2F subgroup. Conclusions: CM interventions are consistent, acceptable, feasible, and effective in improving social, behavioral-affective, and motor skills of children with ASD, regardless of the method of delivery. Clinicians should make efforts to reduce communication/technological issues and parental burden when delivering CM interventions through TH. ClinicalTrials.Gov Study ID-NCT04258254.

PURPOSE: To establish thresholds in the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) pain interference, physical function, fatigue, and depression scores on the basis of their association with subsequent use of the emergency department (ED) or urgent care by people diagnosed with cancer. METHODS: Retrospective data from 952 people seen at Henry Ford Cancer and insured through the Health Alliance Plan were analyzed using generalized linear mixed-effects models. The log odds of ED or urgent care use during 14 or 30 days after each patient-reported outcome (PRO) assessment were related to PRO scores, while adjusting for comorbidity, sociodemographic, and tumor characteristics. RESULTS: Pain interference and physical function were associated with subsequent ED or urgent care visits, but fatigue and depression were not, and the results for 14- and 30-day visits were similar. Thresholds anchored in the likelihood of these visits differed according to cancer stage. For people with advanced cancer, a pain interference score of 60 or higher (odds ratio [OR] 3.75, [95% CI, 1.53 to 7.87]) and a physical function score lower than 40 (OR 2.94, [95% CI, 1.22 to 7.06]) produced the largest ORs with narrowest CIs for 30-day visits. For people with nonadvanced cancer, the thresholds of 65 for pain interference (OR 2.64, [95% CI, 1.40 to 5.01]) and 35 for physical function (OR 1.87, [95% CI, 1.01 to 3.45]) produced largest ORs with narrowest CIs for 30-day visits. CONCLUSION: These anchor-based thresholds in PROMIS scores can inform clinicians' actions with the goal of preventing ED or urgent care visits.

BACKGROUND: With the widespread use of abdominal ultrasonography (US), incidental detection of common bile duct (CBD) dilatation is common in pediatric populations. This study investigated the causes and clinical significance of CBD dilatation in children without biliary symptoms, jaundice, or causative lesions in US. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed pediatric patients with CBD dilatation from July 2013 to June 2023. All cases were detected via abdominal US. We analyzed the patients' clinical manifestations, laboratory data, diagnosis, underlying diseases, and clinical course. RESULTS: In a total of 687 patients enrolled, 338 met inclusion criteria (90 in hepatobiliary, 248 in CBD dilatation group). Of 128 patients with incidental CBD dilatation who underwent regular US examinations, 91 (71.1%) experienced resolution during follow-up. The proportion of patients with intrahepatic duct dilatation was significantly higher in the non-resolution group (p = 0.038). General health examination group had significant smaller CBD diameter compared to the gastrointestinal and infection groups. Correlation analysis found starting point of resolution decline at 3.24 mm (all-inclusive) and 2.51 mm (infant group) CBD diameter. CONCLUSIONS: Most children with incidental CBD dilatation did not have abnormal hepatobiliary function or other sonographic abnormalities. They usually remained asymptomatic and experienced uneventful clinical courses.

As the industrial structure changes, the severe shortage of high-quality technical and skilled talent in China is one of the most significant factors affecting the high-quality development of China's economy. Bridging the gap between cultivating talent from new undergraduate vocational universities and the demand for industrial talent is regarded as an efficient strategy to address the talent shortage. In addressing the gap, China is hindered by a lack of clarity regarding student development goals and effective assessment instruments. Thus, this study aimed to use the Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) and the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to overcome the above challenges. Specifically, we used the FDM to establish a five-level undergraduate vocational education student development model with two 2nd-level indicators, three 3rd-level indicators, eight 4th-level indicators, and 33 5th-level indicators to clarify student development goals. Then, the AHP was applied to determine the indicator weights, and a student development assessment instrument was developed to help universities acquire student development data and improve the matching degree between talent supply and demand. This study could help undergraduate vocational universities cultivate high-quality technical and skilled talent quickly to meet the demand for China's new economic system and to promote industry independence and global competitiveness.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is among the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders, yet the current diagnostic procedures rely on behavioral analyses and interviews and lack objective screening methods. This study seeks to address this gap by integrating upper limb kinematics and deep learning methods to identify potential biomarkers that could be validated in younger age groups in the future to enhance the identification of ASD. Forty-one school-age children, with and without an ASD diagnosis (Mean age ± SE = 10.3 ± 0.4; 12 Females), participated in the study. A single Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) was affixed to the child's wrist as they engaged in a continuous reaching and placing task. Deep learning techniques were employed to classify children with and without ASD. Our findings suggest delays in motor planning and control in school-age children compared to healthy adults. Compared to TD children, children with ASD exhibited poor motor planning and control as seen by greater number of movement units, more movement overshooting, and prolonged time to peak velocity/acceleration. Compensatory movement strategies such as greater velocity and acceleration were also seen in the ASD group. More importantly, using Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) model, we demonstrated an accuracy of ~ 78.1% in classifying children with and without ASD. These findings underscore the potential use of studying upper limb movement kinematics during goal-directed arm movements and deep learning methods as valuable tools for classifying and, consequently, aiding in the diagnosis and early identification of ASD upon further validation in younger children.

Re-emerging human adenovirus type 55 (HAdV55) has become a significant threat to public health due to its widespread circulation and the association with severe pneumonia, but an effective anti-HAdV55 agent remains unavailable. Herein, we report the generation of macaque-derived, human-like monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) protecting against HAdV55 infection with high potency. Using fluorophore-labelled HAdV55 virions as probes, we isolated specific memory B cells from rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) that were immunized twice with an experimental vaccine based on E1-, E3-deleted, replication-incompetent HAdV55. We cloned a total of 19 neutralizing mAbs, nine of which showed half-maximal inhibitory concentrations below 1.0 ng/ml. These mAbs recognized the hyper-variable-region (HVR) 1, 2, or 7 of viral hexon protein, or the fibre knob. In transgenic mice expressing human desmoglein-2, the major cellular receptor for HAdV55, a single intraperitoneal injection with hexon-targeting mAbs efficiently prevented HAdV55 infection, and mAb 29C12 showed protection at a dose as low as 0.004 mg/kg. Fibre-targeting mAb 28E8, however, showed protection only at a dose up to 12.5 mg/kg. In tree shrews that are permissive for HAdV55 infection and disease, mAb 29C12 effectively prevented HAdV55-caused pneumonia. Further analysis revealed that fibre-targeting mAbs blocked the attachment of HAdV55 to host cells, whereas hexon-targeting mAbs, regardless of their targeting HVRs, mainly functioned at post-attachment stage via inhibiting viral endosomal escape. Our results indicate that hexon-targeting mAbs have great anti-HAdV55 activities and warrant pre-clinical and clinical evaluation.

A variety of cellular processes use liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) to create functional levels of organization, but the kinetic pathways by which it proceeds remain incompletely understood. Here in real time, we monitor the dynamics of LLPS of mixtures of segregatively phase-separating polymers inside all-synthetic, giant unilamellar vesicles. After dynamically triggering phase separation, we find that the ensuing relaxation-en route to the new equilibrium-is non-trivially modulated by a dynamic interplay between the coarsening of the evolving droplet phase and the interactive membrane boundary. The membrane boundary is preferentially wetted by one of the incipient phases, dynamically arresting the progression of coarsening and deforming the membrane. When the vesicles are composed of phase-separating mixtures of common lipids, LLPS within the vesicular interior becomes coupled to the membrane's compositional degrees of freedom, producing microphase-separated membrane textures. This coupling of bulk and surface phase-separation processes suggests a physical principle by which LLPS inside living cells might be dynamically regulated and communicated to the cellular boundaries.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of the risk of pesticide inhalation in populations around farmland is necessary because inhalation is one of the ways in which pesticides can risk human health. This study aimed to identify the inhalation risk of difenoconazole on humans by using dose-response and exposure assessments. RESULTS: In the field simulation application, respiratory exposure in populations around farmland ranged from 71 to 430 ng/m3 . Using response surface methodology, the maximum bioaccessibility of difenoconazole in three simulated lung fluids was 35.33% in Gamble's solution (GS), 34.12% in artificial lysosomal fluid (ALF), and 42.06% in simulated interstitial lung fluid (SLF). Taking the proliferation activity of the A549 cell model as the endpoint, the benchmark dose limit and benchmark dose of difenoconazole on A549 cells were 16.36 and 5.60 mg/kg, respectively. The margin of exposure to difenoconazole in GS, ALF and SLF were, respectively, 8.66 × 105 to 5.28 × 106 , 8.97 × 105 to 5.47 × 106 and 7.28 × 105 to 4.44 × 106 . CONCLUSION: The risk assessment results indicate that under all circumstances, applying difenoconazole is safe for populations around farmland. However, a fan-shaped nozzle, suspension concentrate and greater inhalation height increase the risk of inhalation. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is an important nucleus in pain regulation. However, the underlying neural pathway and the function of specific cell types remain unclear. Here, we report a previously unrecognized ascending facilitation pathway, the DRN to the mesoaccumbal dopamine (DA) circuit, for regulating pain. Chronic pain increased the activity of DRN glutamatergic, but not serotonergic, neurons projecting to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) (DRNGlu-VTA) in male mice. The optogenetic activation of DRNGlu-VTA circuit induced a pain-like response in naive male mice, and its inhibition produced an analgesic effect in male mice with neuropathic pain. Furthermore, we discovered that DRN ascending pathway regulated pain through strengthened excitatory transmission onto the VTA DA neurons projecting to the ventral part of nucleus accumbens medial shell (vNAcMed), thereby activated the mesoaccumbal DA neurons. Correspondingly, optogenetic manipulation of this three-node pathway bilaterally regulated pain behaviors. These findings identified a DRN ascending excitatory pathway that is crucial for pain sensory processing, which can potentially be exploited toward targeting pain disorders.

IMPORTANCE: The efficacy of telehealth (TH) interventions needs to be studied. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy, fidelity, acceptability, and feasibility of face-to-face (F2F) versus TH seated play (SP) interventions among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). DESIGN: As part of a larger randomized controlled trial, children were assigned to the SP group and received TH and F2F interventions over 8 wk using a pretest-posttest study design. SETTING: A research lab or through videoconferencing. PARTICIPANTS: Fifteen children with ASD (ages 5-14 yr) were randomly assigned to the SP group and received the intervention F2F or through TH. INTERVENTION: Children received 16 SP intervention sessions (2 sessions per week for 8 wk). OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Pretests and posttests included standardized fine motor assessments. Video coding compared socially directed verbalization during training sessions. Parents and trainers provided feedback on their experiences. RESULTS: Seven children received the intervention F2F, whereas 8 received TH intervention. Children in both subgroups showed similar training improvements in fine motor skills and socially directed verbalizations (ps > .01). Parents rated both interventions as acceptable and feasible; however, they reported longer preparation time and effort during TH interventions (ps < .01). Trainers reported greater parental involvement but more communication and technological issues during TH interventions. Fidelity checks indicated fewer reinforcements during TH versus F2F sessions. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: TH intervention is feasible and effective in improving fine motor and social communication performance. Clinicians should reduce parental burden and overcome technological issues. What This Article Adds: This study confirmed the efficacy, fidelity, acceptability, and feasibility of delivering seated play, standard of care interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder via telehealth. However, clinicians should work on reducing parental burden and overcoming communication and technological issues related to telehealth.

Background: Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is a commonly used antibiotic. While cutaneous adverse drug reactions associated with TMP-SMX are commonly recognized, lung toxicity induced by TMP-SMX is an unusual condition, with scattered reports of hypersensitivity pneumonitis, acute fibrinous organizing pneumonia, interstitial lung disease and acute respiratory distress syndrome. Reports of TMP-SMX-associated drug-induced lung injury (DLI) are rare in the pediatric population and its pathogenesis is not well understood. Diagnosis of DLI remains a challenge, given the wide range of clinical presentations that overlap with other conditions and the lack of diagnostic tests. In this report, we describe a case of TMP-SMX-induced lung injury in an eight-year-old child. Case Description: An eight-year-old girl presented in respiratory failure with acute symptoms of shortness of breath, fever, maculopapular rash and vomiting. This was associated with pneumonitis, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum and subcutaneous emphysema on imaging. She had been on 25 days of TMP-SMX for treatment of Group D Salmonella bacteremia and osteomyelitis that was diagnosed prior to this current presentation. TMP-SMX was discontinued on admission due to concerns of possible drug reaction. Extensive infective, autoimmune and immunologic workup did not reveal the cause of the respiratory failure. Considering the absence of an alternative explanation for her clinical presentation and similarities in clinical courses to other reported cases, she was eventually diagnosed with TMP-SMX-associated DLI. She received a course of corticosteroids with subsequent clinical improvement and was weaned off home oxygen therapy a few months after her discharge from the hospital. Conclusions: Diagnosis of DLI can be challenging. The early identification of DLI and discontinuation of culprit drug is essential in its management. Further understanding of the underlying pathophysiology and risk factors for TMP-SMX-associated DLI is required.

Understanding the neurodevelopmental trajectories of infants and children is essential for the early identification of neurodevelopmental disorders, elucidating the neural mechanisms underlying the disorders, and predicting developmental outcomes. Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an infant-friendly neuroimaging tool that enables the monitoring of cerebral hemodynamic responses from the neonatal period. Due to its advantages, fNIRS is a promising tool for studying neurodevelopmental trajectories. Although many researchers have used fNIRS to study neural development in infants/children and have reported important findings, there is a lack of synthesized evidence for using fNIRS to track neurodevelopmental trajectories in infants and children. The current systematic review summarized 84 original fNIRS studies and showed a general trend of age-related increase in network integration and segregation, interhemispheric connectivity, leftward asymmetry, and differences in phase oscillation during resting-state. Moreover, typically developing infants and children showed a developmental trend of more localized and differentiated activation when processing visual, auditory, and tactile information, suggesting more mature and specialized sensory networks. Later in life, children switched from recruiting bilateral auditory to a left-lateralized language circuit when processing social auditory and language information and showed increased prefrontal activation during executive functioning tasks. The developmental trajectories are different in children with developmental disorders, with infants at risk for autism spectrum disorder showing initial overconnectivity followed by underconnectivity during resting-state; and children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorders showing lower prefrontal cortex activation during executive functioning tasks compared to their typically developing peers throughout childhood. The current systematic review supports the use of fNIRS in tracking the neurodevelopmental trajectories in children. More longitudinal studies are needed to validate the neurodevelopmental trajectories and explore the use of these neurobiomarkers for the early identification of developmental disorders and in tracking the effects of interventions.
