RESUMEN

In this study, we designed and synthesized a highly stable manganese (Mn2+)-based hepatobiliary complex by tethering an ethoxybenzyl (EOB) moiety with an ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) coordination cage as an alternative to the well-established hepatobiliary gadolinium (Gd3+) chelates and evaluated its usage as a T1 hepatobiliary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agent (CA). This new complex exhibits higher r1 relaxivity (2.3 mM-1 s-1) than clinically approved Mn2+-based hepatobiliary complex Mn-DPDP (1.6 mM-1 s-1) at 1.5 T. Mn-EDTA-EOB shows much higher kinetic inertness than that of clinically approved Gd3+-based hepatobiliary MRI CAs, such as Gd-DTPA-EOB and Gd-BOPTA. In addition, in vivo biodistribution and MRI enhancement patterns of this new Mn2+ chelate are comparable to those of Gd3+-based hepatobiliary MRI CAs. The diagnostic efficacy of the new complex was demonstrated by its enhanced tumor detection sensitivity in a liver cancer model using in vivo MRI.

RESUMEN

Quarantine treatments by phosphine (PH3) gas have been performed to replace methyl bromide (MeBr) for export cut flowers and imported nursery plant in Korea. In this preliminary study, two dominant insect pests of cut flowers, Tetranychus urticae Koch and Frankliniella occidentalis Pergande, and the dominant insect pest of nursery plants, Planococcus citri Risso, were used to certify optimum concentration and fumigation time, along with evaluation of phytotoxic damages. To validate the results of preliminary tests, quarantine treatments for export cut flowers was performed in a 58-m3 reefer container. When 14 species of cut flowers were fumigated with 2 g m-3 PH3 for 24 h (Ct product was 30.9 g h m-3) at 5 °C, all pests were effectively controlled and no phytotoxic damage were observed on roses and chrysanthemums. On quarantine trials for imported nursery trees, which was performed at 10 m3 scale covered with a PVC-tarpaulin tent, 2 g m-3 of PH3 for 24 h (Ct product was 30.0 g h m-3) at 15 °C was enough to kill all pests and no damage was observed on seven species of nursery plants. Phosphine gas shows the promise as MeBr alternative to perishable commodities in terms of efficacy to certain quarantine pest and maintenance of its quality as well as being a more environmentally safe fumigant.

RESUMEN

Proteomic analysis is defined as the characterization of the entire set of proteins encoded by a genome. Two-dimensional (2D) electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) are key technologies used in proteomic analysis to gain information about protein expression profiles and post-translational modifications. Knowledge about aging processes can be gained by recognizing changes in protein expression. Thus, to better understand the aging process through protein profiling, post-mitochondrial (PM) fractions of young (13-month) and old (31-month) male Fischer 344 rat kidney were differentially analyzed by 2D. We detected a total number of 380 spots on 2D gel images. Among them, 167 spots showed 2-fold significant alterations (p<0.05) between young and old PM fractions. Further, 103 proteins were identified by MALDI-TOF MS. The PM fraction of aged rat kidney showed increases in antioxidative and proteolytic proteins and decreases in cytoskeletal proteins. In addition, we found age-related changes in transport and homeostasis proteins. Thus, our results demonstrated that proteomic analysis can be effectively applied to the assessment of the age status of protein expression, and thereby provide valuable information on age-related changes of proteome.

RESUMEN

1,2-Dihydroxyanthraquinone (1) was isolated from the seed of Cassia obtusifolia through bioassay-guided fractionation. 1,2-Dihydroxyanthraquinone strongly inhibited the growth of Clostridium perfringens and Escherichia coli. Structure-activity relationship revealed that 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone (2) and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (3) had strong growth-inhibition against C. perfringens. In growth-promoting activity, 1,2-, 1,4-, and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinones exhibited strong growth-promoting activity to Bifidobacterium bifidum.
