Aim: The present study aimed to describe in detail the changes to and assess the risk factors for poor long-term outcomes of psychiatric disorders in families of COVID-19 patients. Methods: A single-center, retrospective study using questionnaires. Family members of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with severe COVID-19 participated. Psychiatric disorders refer to the psychological distress such as anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced by the patient's family. Results: Forty-six family members completed the survey and were analyzed. Anxiety, depression, and PTSD occurred in 24%, 33%, and 2% of family members, respectively, and psychiatric disorders occurred in 39%. On multivariable analysis, living in the same house with the patient was independently associated with a lower risk of psychiatric disorders in families of COVID-19 patients (OR, 0.180; 95% CI, 0.036-0.908; p = 0.038). Furthermore, four family members overcame psychiatric disorders, and six family members newly developed psychiatric disorders during the one-year follow-up period. Conclusion: Approximately 40% of family members had long-term psychiatric disorders, and some of them overcame the psychiatric disorders, and some newly developed psychiatric disorders over the one-year follow-up. Living in the same house with the patient was possibly significantly associated with the reduction of long-term symptoms of psychiatric disorders, but this result must be interpreted with care. Further large studies are needed to examine the factors associated with the long-term mental status of family members.

Legionella is an important waterborne pathogen that causes legionellosis. Public baths are considered the primary cause of legionellosis infection in Japan. We investigated the prevalence and genetic distribution of 338 Legionella spp. isolates from 81 public bath facilities, including 35 hot springs and 46 other facilities, through annual periodic surveillance in Kobe, Japan, from 2016 to 2021. In addition, the genotypes of nine clinical strains of unknown infectious source from the same period were compared to those of bathwater isolates. We elucidated the differences in the distribution of Legionella species, serogroups, and genotypes between hot springs and other public baths. Legionella israelensis, L. londiniensis, and L. micdadei colonized hot springs along with L. pneumophila. The minimum spanning tree analysis based on multiple-locus variable number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) also identified four major clonal complexes (CCs) in L. pneumophila SG1 and found that CC1 of the four CCs is a specific novel genotype with the lag-1 gene in hot springs. The same MLVA genotypes and sequence types as those of the clinical strains were not present among the strains isolated from bath water. Thus, our surveillance is useful for estimating the sources of legionellosis infection in Japan and developing prevention strategies.

Monitoring core body temperature (CBT) allows observation of heat stress and thermal comfort in various environments. By introducing a Peltier element, we improved the zero-heat-flux core body thermometer for hot environments. In this study, we performed a theoretical analysis, designed a prototype probe, and evaluated its performance through simulator experiments with human subjects. The finite element analysis shows that our design can reduce the influence of external temperature variations by as much as 1%. In the simulator experiment, the prototype probe could measure deep temperatures within an error of less than 0.1 °C, regardless of outside temperature change. In the ergometer experiment with four subjects, the average difference between the prototype probe and a commercial zero-heat-flux probe was +0.1 °C, with a 95% LOA of -0.23 °C to +0.21 °C. In the dome sauna test, the results measured in six of the seven subjects exhibited the same trend as the reference temperature. These results show that the newly developed probe with the Peltier module can measure CBT accurately, even when the ambient temperature is higher than CBT up to 42 °C.

Legionella pneumophila, the primary causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, is classified into at least 15 serogroups (SGs). Before genotyping, serotyping is first performed to limit the sources of L. pneumophila infections that caused an outbreak. In addition to conventional assays using monoclonal or polyclonal antisera, serotyping using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (M-PCR) was recently developed for L. pneumophila. In this study, we applied the M-PCR system to 41 strains that remained to be SGUT (untypable) by slide agglutination tests among the 220 L. pneumophila strains isolated from bath water in Kobe City during 2016-2020, to determine SG-genotypes (SGg) by PCR amplification of the specific target gene of the SGs. Among the 41 SGUT strains, SGg4/10/14 was the most predominant (24/41, 58.5%), followed by SGg1 (7/41, 17.1%). Seven strains, except for the strains determined as SGg1, were identified as belonging to a single SGg by M-PCR serotyping (SGg5 [3/41, 7.3%], SGg8 [3/41, 7.3%], and SGg7 [1/41, 2.4%]). Furthermore, we found that the seven strains identified as SGg1 harbored particular genotypes. In conclusion, the M-PCR serotyping assay will be helpful for investigating the distribution of L. pneumophila in environmental and clinical settings.

PURPOSE: Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is known to be effective at stimulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels, but the relationship between the volume of muscle stimulated and BDNF levels is not clear. The purpose of this study was to quantify BDNF as a function of muscle volume stimulated in young adults. METHODS: Twelve young adults (male, n = 9, age = 27.3 ± 5.5 years) were enrolled in this study. Participants completed three testing conditions in randomized order: 23 min of maximum tolerated bilateral stimulation of (1) the quadriceps muscle or (2) the musculature of the entire lower limbs and (3) control testing and retesting after 23 min without an intervention. Blood samples were collected before, immediately after, 20 min after, and 40 min after the intervention when EMS was applied to the thighs or the entire lower limb conditions. Serum obtained from blood collection was used for BDNF analysis. RESULTS: The delta value of BDNF for the test and retest in the control condition was - 42.1 ± 73.8 pg/mL, and there was no significant difference between the test and retest BDNF. Compared to stimulation of the quadriceps muscle, stimulation of the entire lower limbs produced significantly higher BDNF at 20 min post-treatment than those at pre-treatment or 40 min post-treatment, and BDNF was also significantly higher immediately post-treatment than those at pre-treatment. Only stimulation of the quadriceps muscle did not induce a significant change between pre- and post-treatment. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that the volume of muscle stimulation is important for increased BDNF.

Forward head posture (FHP) is a serious problem causing head and neck disability, but the characteristics of muscle activity during long-term postural maintenance are unclear. This study aimed to investigate a comparison of electromyography (EMG) activation properties and subjective fatigue between young adults with and without habitual FHP. In this study, we examined the changes in the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of muscle activity using high-density surface EMG (HD-SEMG) in addition to mean frequency, a conventional measure of muscle fatigue. Nineteen male participants were included in the study (FHP group (n = 9; age = 22.3 ± 1.5 years) and normal group (n = 10; age = 22.5 ± 1.4 years)). Participants held three head positions (e.g., forward, backward, and neutral positions) for a total of 30 min each, and the EMG activity of the trapezius pars descendens muscle during posture maintenance was measured by HD-SEMG. The root mean square (RMS), the modified entropy, and the correlation coefficient were calculated. Additionally, the visual analogue scale (VAS) was evaluated to assess subjective fatigue. The RMS, VAS, modified entropy, and correlation coefficients were significantly higher in the FHP group than in the normal group (p < 0.001). With increasing postural maintenance time, the modified entropy and correlation coefficient values significantly decreased, and the mean frequency and VAS values significantly increased (p < 0.001). Furthermore, the forward position had significantly higher RMS, correlation coefficient, modified entropy, and VAS values than in the neutral position (p < 0.001). The HD-SEMG potential distribution patterns in the FHP group showed less heterogeneity and greater muscle activity in the entire muscle and subjective fatigue than those in the normal group. Excess muscle activity even in the neutral/comfortable position in the FHP group could potentially be a mechanism of neuromuscular conditions in this population.

To assess the prevalence of and risk factors for postintensive care syndrome in family (PICS-F) in the COVID-19 era. DESIGN: A single-center retrospective study using questionnaires and telephone calls. SETTING: An ICU at St. Luke's International Hospital. PATIENTS: Patients who were treated for COVID-19-related acute respiratory distress syndrome between March 23, 2020, and September 30, 2021, and their family members participated. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: PICS-F refers to the psychologic distress such as anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced by the patient's family. The primary outcome was PICS-F occurrence. Furthermore, factors related to PICS-F development were identified using statistical analysis. Of 85 patients with COVID-19 who were admitted to the ICU, 57 family members consented to the study and completed the survey, and 54 family members' data were analyzed. The median age of family members was 53.5 years, 68.5% were female, and 46.3% were spouses. The median age of patients was 55.5 years, and 83.3% were male. During their ICU stay, 68.5% received invasive mechanical ventilation, 11.1% received venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, and 11.1% underwent tracheostomy. The median ICU and hospital stays were 7 and 22 days, respectively. Overall PICS-F occurred in 33%. Anxiety, depression, and PTSD occurred in 24%, 26%, and 4% of family members, respectively. The prevalence of all three components of PICS-F was 4%. Multivariable analysis showed that Family Satisfaction with the ICU Survey (FS-ICU) scores were independently associated with PICS-F development (odds ratio, 0.941; 95% CI, 0.891-0.983; p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: One-third of family members of COVID-19 patients admitted to the ICU had symptoms of PICS-F. These results suggest that measurement of FS-ICU may be helpful as a predictor of PICS-F development. In addition, increasing the level of ICU care satisfaction of the family members may prevent PICS-F.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to detect specific motor unit (MU) abnormalities in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) compared to controls using high-density surface electromyography (HD-SEMG). METHODS: Sixteen people with ALS and 16 control subjects. The participants performed ramp up and sustained contractions at 30% of their maximal voluntary contraction. HD-SEMG signals were recorded in the vastus lateralis muscle and decomposed into individual MU firing behavior using a convolution blind source separation method. RESULTS: In total, 339 MUs were detected (people with ALS; n = 93, control subjects; n = 246). People with ALS showed significantly higher mean firing rate, recruitment threshold, coefficient of variation of the MU firing rate, MU firing rate at recruitment, and motoneurons excitability than those of control subjects (p < 0.001). The number of MU, MU firing rate, recruitment threshold, and MU firing rate at recruitment were significantly correlated with disease severity (p < 0.001). Multivariable analysis revealed that an increased MU firing rate at recruitment was independently associated with ALS. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest increased excitability at recruitment, which is consistent with neurodegeneration results in a compensatory increase in MU activity. SIGNIFICANCE: Abnormal MU firing behavior provides an important physiological index for understanding the pathophysiology of ALS.

The aim of this study was to quantify the laterality of motor unit (MU) activation properties in people with Parkinson's disease (PD) during force production (low- to high-intensity contraction) using high-density surface electromyography (HD-SEMG). Sixteen females with PD (age = 69.9 ± 7.6 years, disease duration = 4.9 ± 5.1 years) and 14 healthy female subjects (age = 68.6 ± 3.6 years) were enrolled in the study and performed submaximal ramp-up contractions during isometric knee extension. HD-SEMG signals were recorded from both vastus lateralis muscles. We calculated the level of heterogeneity in the spatial distribution patterns of the HD-SEMG signals and determined the modified entropy, coefficient of variation of the root mean square (RMS), and correlation coefficient to evaluate MU activation properties. Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to examine the relationships between disease severity and the RMS and EMG variables. The RMS value and heterogeneity were significantly higher and lower on the more-affected side in people with PD than on the other side in people with PD or either side in control subjects (p < 0.05). People with PD exhibited the temporal changes of spatial MUs activation properties showed significant laterality when compared to healthy control subjects not only in the low-intensity contractions but also in high-intensity contraction. Moderate-to-strong correlations were observed between disease severity and RMS and EMG variables in people with PD (r > 0.6, p < 0.001). We compared the laterality of MU activation properties between the people with PD and the control subjects. These findings suggest that people with PD have asymmetrical MU activation properties, regardless of the magnitude of force production.

RESUMEN

Exposure to aerosols containing Legionella from artificially made water systems has been established as a primary cause of Legionnaires' disease. In this study, we investigated an outbreak of L. pneumophila serogroup 1 sequence type 138 which occurred at a bath facility in 2022. The whole-genome sequencing of isolates revealed that the colonization of L. pneumophila at the bath facility had occurred before 2013, and the patients had been exposed to multiple genetic lineages of the strain. Our study demonstrates the importance of performing a careful comparative genetic analysis of clinical and environmental isolates from LD outbreaks in order to effectively investigate and prevent future LD outbreaks.

The relationship between motor unit (MU) firing behavior and the severity of neurodegeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD) is not clear. This study aimed to elucidate the association between degeneration with dopaminergic pathways and MU firing behavior in people with PD. Fourteen females with PD (age, 72.6 ± 7.2 years, disease duration, 3.5 ± 2.1 years) were enrolled in this study. All participants performed a submaximal, isometric knee extension ramp-up contraction from 0% to 80% of their maximal voluntary contraction strength. We used high-density surface electromyography with 64 electrodes to record the muscle activity of the vastus lateralis muscle and decomposed the signals with the convolution kernel compensation technique to extract the signals of individual MUs. We calculated the degree of degeneration of the central lesion-specific binding ratio by dopamine transporter single-photon emission computed tomography. The primary, novel results were as follows: (1) moderate-to-strong correlations were observed between the degree of degeneration of the central lesion and MU firing behavior; (2) a moderate correlation was observed between clinical measures of disease severity and MU firing behavior; and (3) the methods of predicting central nervous system degeneration from MU firing behavior abnormalities had a high detection accuracy with an area under the curve >0.83. These findings suggest that abnormalities in MU activity can be used to predict central nervous system degeneration following PD.

Background: Despite the potential benefits, the effects of Hybrid Assistive Limb (HAL) gait training on changes in neuromuscular activation that accompany functional gains in individuals with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) type III is not well known. In this article, we quantify the effects of HAL gait training on spatial muscle activity patterns in a patient with SMA type III using multi-channel surface electromyography (SEMG). Methods: A 21-years old male (168 cm, 47.8 kg) with spinal muscular atrophy type III, when diagnosed at 18-years old by genetic screening, participated in this case study. Although he presented with forearm distal muscle weakness, atrophy of the intrinsic muscles of the hand, and neuromuscular fatigue, his activities of daily living is independent. The patient underwent a separate, single 33-minute session of both HAL and treadmill gait training. To evaluate the coefficient of variation (CoV) of force and alterations in the SEMG spatial distribution patterns, modified entropy and CoV of root mean square (RMS) were calculated from the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle before and after the intervention of HAL and treadmill gait training. Each training session was separated by a period of one month to avoid cross-over effects. Results: There was a greater decrease in the ΔCoV of force and an increase in the magnitude of whole VL muscle activation from pre-intervention to post-intervention with the HAL gait training as compared to the treadmill gait training. In response to only HAL gait training, the CoV of RMS was higher, and the modified entropy was lower post-intervention than pre-intervention. Conclusions: Our results support the notion that HAL gait training has a positive benefit on motor output not only in the magnitude of SEMG generated but also the patterns of neural activation.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) have greater laterality of muscle contraction properties than other people with parkinsonism diseases. However, few studies have reported the laterality of MU activation properties of the lower extremity muscles in patients with PD. The aim of the present study was to identify the laterality of MU behavior in PD patients using high-density surface electromyography (HD-SEMG). Eleven female patients with PD (age, 69.2 ± 6.2 years, disease duration, 2.7 ± 0.9 years, Unified Parkinson's disease Rating Scale score, 13 (9-16)), and 9 control female subjects (age, 66.8 ± 3.5 years) were enrolled in the present study. All subjects performed a sustained isometric knee extension in a 30% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) task for 20 s. HD-SEMG signals were used to record and extract single MU firing behavior in the vastus lateralis muscle during submaximal isometric knee extensor contractions with 64 electrodes and decomposed with the convolution kernel compensation technique to extract individuals MUs. Compared to the control subjects, the patients with PD exhibited laterality of the MU firing rate and an absence of a relationship between the mean MU firing rate and MU threshold. Patients with PD exhibit laterality of MU behavior and experience MU behavioral abnormalities even with mild symptoms such as Hoehn & Yahr stage ≤ 3 and disease duration = 2.7 ± 0.9. These findings suggest the importance of considering the detection of abnormal muscle properties in PD patients beginning in the early phase of the disease.

Laparoscopic surgery is a representative operative method of minimally invasive surgery. However, most laparoscopic hand instruments consist of rigid and straight structures, which have serious limitations such as interference by the instruments and limited field of view of the endoscope. To improve the flexibility and dexterity of these instruments, we propose a new concept of a multijoint manipulator using a variable stiffness mechanism. The manipulator uses a magneto-rheological compound (MRC) whose rheological properties can be tuned by an external magnetic field. In this study, we changed the shape of the electromagnet and MRC to improve the performance of the variable stiffness joint we previously fabricated; further, we fabricated a prototype and performed basic evaluation of the joint using this prototype. The MRC was fabricated by mixing carbonyl iron particles and glycerol. The prototype single joint was assembled by combining MRC and electromagnets. The configuration of the joint indicates that it has a closed magnetic circuit. To examine the basic properties of the joint, we conducted preliminary experiments such as elastic modulus measurement and rigidity evaluation. We confirmed that the elastic modulus increased when a magnetic field was applied. The rigidity of the joint was also verified under bending conditions. Our results confirmed that the stiffness of the new joint changed significantly compared with the old joint depending on the presence or absence of a magnetic field, and the performance of the new joint also improved.

Presently, there is no convenient method to measure 24-h urinary Na excretion, which is an important index of daily Na intake, and 24-h urine collection involves a complex process. However, the Na-to-creatinine ratio (NCR) in spot urine has the potential to evaluate 24-h Na excretion and is useful for point-of-care testing. Thus, this study aimed to realize a near-infrared spectroscopic system to assess NCR in spot urine: (1) We attempted to estimate Na concentration using fewer than 10 wavelengths; (2) we calculated NCR using creatinine concentrations from our previous report and verified the NCR predictability. A calibration model was created using multi-linear regression analysis using 10 selected wavelengths in the range of Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer. Spot urine samples were obtained from healthy adults, and glucose powder was added to them to simulate diabetic samples. NCR was calculated using only six wavelengths, and the results confirmed the high accuracy of the estimated Na concentration even though inorganic components do not absorb near-infrared light. Our method enables to optically estimate NCR in spot urine, and it will be useful for point-of-care testing. Graphical abstract.

BACKGROUND: We conducted active surveillance to elucidate the distribution of Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes causing invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and clarified the genetic relatedness among the isolates in Kobe City, Japan. METHODS: Forty-five IPD-causing S. pneumoniae strains were analyzed from March 2016 to May 2018 through active surveillance in Kobe City, Hyogo, Japan. Serotypes were determined by multiplex serotyping PCR and the Quellung reaction with pneumococcal antisera. Fourteen Sp12F strains were subjected to whole-genome sequencing (WGS). RESULTS: Among 45 isolates, the most frequent serotypes were 12F (n=14, 31%), 24F (n=5, 11%), and 10A (n=4, 9%). Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) analysis of 14 isolates of Sp12F divided them into ST4846 (n=4) and ST6495 (n=10). WGS showed clonality of the 10 isolates of ST6495, with only 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms in the genomes. Meanwhile, ST4846 strains in Kobe differed from only the outbreak strains of Sp12F ST4846 in Tsuruoka, Japan, reported on 2018. CONCLUSIONS: Serotype monitoring showed Sp12F to be the predominant serotype in Kobe, and WGS revealed the clonal spread of Sp12F ST6495 in this city. Thus, the spread of Sp12F could become a serious public health problem in Japan, warranting thorough monitoring in future.

RESUMEN

We investigated the genetic characteristics of 161 Legionella pneumophila strains isolated over a period of 10 years from cooling towers in Japan. Minimum spanning tree analysis based on the sequence-based typing (SBT) of them identified three clonal complexes (CCs); CC1 (105/161, 65.2%), CC2 (22 /161, 13.7%), and CC3 (20/161, 12.4%). CC1 was formed by serogroup (SG) 1 and SG7, whereas CC2 was mainly formed by SG1. All of the CC3 isolates except two strains were SG13. The major sequence types (STs) in CC1 and CC2 were ST1 (88/105, 83.8%) and ST154 (15/22, 68.2%), respectively. These STs are known as typical types of L. pneumophila SG1 in Japanese cooling tower. Additionally, we identified 15 strains of ST2603 as the major type in CC3. This ST has not been reported in Japanese cooling tower. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis of the representative strains in the three CCs, which were isolated from various cooling towers over the 10 years, elucidated high clonal population of L. pneumophila in Japanese cooling tower. Moreover, it revealed that the strains of CC2 are phylogenetically distant compared to those of CC1 and CC3, and belonged to L. pneumophila subsp. fraseri.

The Legionella Reference Center in Japan collected 427 Legionella clinical isolates between 2008 and 2016, including 7 representative isolates from corresponding outbreaks. The collection included 419 Legionella pneumophila isolates, of which 372 belonged to serogroup 1 (SG1) (87%) and the others belonged to SG2 to SG15 except for SG7 and SG11, and 8 isolates of other Legionella species (Legionella bozemanae, Legionella dumoffii, Legionella feeleii, Legionella longbeachae, Legionella londiniensis, and Legionella rubrilucens). L. pneumophila isolates were genotyped by sequence-based typing (SBT) and represented 187 sequence types (STs), of which 126 occurred in a single isolate (index of discrimination of 0.984). These STs were analyzed using minimum spanning tree analysis, resulting in the formation of 18 groups. The pattern of overall ST distribution among L. pneumophila isolates was diverse. In particular, some STs were frequently isolated and were suggested to be related to the infection sources. The major STs were ST23 (35 isolates), ST120 (20 isolates), and ST138 (16 isolates). ST23 was the most prevalent and most causative ST for outbreaks in Japan and Europe. ST138 has been observed only in Japan, where it has caused small-scale outbreaks; 81% of those strains (13 isolates) were suspected or confirmed to infect humans through bath water sources. On the other hand, 11 ST23 strains (31%) and 5 ST120 strains (25%) were suspected or confirmed to infect humans through bath water. These findings suggest that some ST strains frequently cause legionellosis in Japan and are found under different environmental conditions.IMPORTANCELegionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (SG1) is the most frequent cause of legionellosis. Our previous genetic analysis indicated that SG1 environmental isolates represented 8 major clonal complexes, consisting of 3 B groups, 2 C groups, and 3 S groups, which included major environmental isolates derived from bath water, cooling towers, and soil and puddles, respectively. Here, we surveyed clinical isolates collected from patients with legionellosis in Japan between 2008 and 2016. Most strains belonging to the B group were isolated from patients for whom bath water was the suspected or confirmed source of infection. Among the isolates derived from patients whose suspected infection source was soil or dust, most belonged to the S1 group and none belonged to the B or C groups. Additionally, the U group was discovered as a new group, which mainly included clinical isolates with unknown infection sources.

Ultrasonography (US) is useful for visual detection of edematous tissues to assess subcutaneous echogenicity. However, visualization of subcutaneous echogenicity is interpreted differently among operators because the evaluation is subjective and individual operators have unique knowledge. This study objectively assessed leg edema using US with a gel pad including fat for normalization of echogenicity in subcutaneous tissue. Five younger adults and four elderly people with leg edema were recruited. We compared assessments of US and limb circumference before and after the intervention of vibration to decrease edema in younger adults, and edema prior to going to sleep and reduced edema in the early morning in elderly people. These assessments were performed twice in elderly people by three operators and reliability, interrater differences, and bias were assessed. For US assessment, echogenicity in subcutaneous tissue was normalized to that of the gel pad by dividing the mean echogenicity of subcutaneous tissue by the mean echogenicity of the gel pad. In younger adults, the normalized subcutaneous echogenicity before the intervention was significantly higher than that after the intervention. In elderly people, echogenicity indicating edema was significantly higher than that after edema reduction. Edema was detected with accuracy rates of 76.9% in younger adults and 75.0% in elderly people. Meanwhile, limb circumference could be used to detect edema in 50.0% of healthy adults and 87.8% of elderly people. The intra-reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.9, p < 0.01), and the inter-reliability was good (intraclass correlation coefficient > 0.7, p < 0.01) for normalized subcutaneous echogenicity. Bland-Altman plots revealed that inter-rater differences and systematic bias were small. Normalized subcutaneous echogenicity with the pad can sensitively and objectively assess leg edema with high reliability. Therefore, this method has the potential to become a new gold standard for objective assessment of leg edema in clinical practice.

Reflection photoplethysmography (PPG) using 530 nm (green) wavelength light has the potential to be a superior method for monitoring heart rate (HR) during normal daily life due to its relative freedom from artifacts. However, little is known about the accuracy of pulse rate (PR) measured by 530 nm light PPG during motion. Therefore, we compared the HR measured by electrocadiography (ECG) as a reference with PR measured by 530, 645 (red), and 470 nm (blue) wavelength light PPG during baseline and while performing hand waving in 12 participants. In addition, we examined the change of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by motion for each of the three wavelengths used for the PPG. The results showed that the limit of agreement in Bland-Altman plots between the HR measured by ECG and PR measured by 530 nm light PPG (±0.61 bpm) was smaller than that achieved when using 645 and 470 nm light PPG (±3.20 bpm and ±2.23 bpm, respectively). The ΔSNR (the difference between baseline and task values) of 530 and 470nm light PPG was significantly smaller than ΔSNR for red light PPG. In conclusion, 530 nm light PPG could be a more suitable method than 645 and 470nm light PPG for monitoring HR in normal daily life.
