RESUMEN

AIMS: Caused by multiple risk factors, heavy burden of major depressive disorder (MDD) poses serious challenges to public health worldwide over the past 30 years. Yet the burden and attributable risk factors of MDD were not systematically known. We aimed to reveal the long-term spatio-temporal trends in the burden and attributable risk factors of MDD at global, regional and national levels during 1990-2019. METHODS: We obtained MDD and attributable risk factors data from Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. We used joinpoint regression model to assess the temporal trend in MDD burden, and age-period-cohort model to measure the effects of age, period and birth cohort on MDD incidence rate. We utilized population attributable fractions (PAFs) to estimate the specific proportions of MDD burden attributed to given risk factors. RESULTS: During 1990-2019, the global number of MDD incident cases, prevalent cases and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) increased by 59.10%, 59.57% and 58.57%, respectively. Whereas the global age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized prevalence rate (ASPR) and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) of MDD decreased during 1990-2019. The ASIR, ASPR and ASDR in women were 1.62, 1.62 and 1.60 times as that in men in 2019, respectively. The highest age-specific incidence, prevalence and DALYs rate occurred at the age of 60-64 in women, and at the age of 75-84 in men, but the maximum increasing trends in these age-specific rates occurred at the age of 5-9. Population living during 2000-2004 had higher risk of MDD. MDD burden varied by socio-demographic index (SDI), regions and nations. In 2019, low-SDI region, Central sub-Saharan Africa and Uganda had the highest ASIR, ASPR and ASDR. The global PAFs of intimate partner violence (IPV), childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and bullying victimization (BV) were 8.43%, 5.46% and 4.86% in 2019, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Over the past 30 years, the global ASIR, ASPR and ASDR of MDD had decreased trends, while the burden of MDD was still serious, and multiple disparities in MDD burden remarkably existed. Women, elderly and populations living during 2000-2004 and in low-SDI regions, had more severe burden of MDD. Children were more susceptible to MDD. Up to 18.75% of global MDD burden would be eliminated through early preventing against IPV, CSA and BV. Tailored strategies-and-measures in different regions and demographic groups based on findings in this studywould be urgently needed to eliminate the impacts of modifiable risk factors on MDD, and then mitigate the burden of MDD.

RESUMEN

Background: Newly identified as a radiological concept, interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) is emerging as a prognostic factor for lung cancer. Yet, debates persist regarding the prognostic significance of ILA in lung cancer. Our inaugural meta-analysis aimed to investigate the correlation between ILA and lung cancer outcomes, offering additional insights for clinicians in predicting patient prognosis. Methods: Articles meeting the criteria were found through PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Web of Science by February 29, 2024. The outcomes evaluated were the survival rates such as overall survival (OS), disease-free survival (DFS), progression-free survival (PFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Results: A total of 12 articles with 4416 patients were included in this meta-analysis. The pooled results showed that lung cancer patients with interstitial lung abnormalities had an inferior OS (n=11; HR=2.22; 95% CI=1.68-2.95; P<0.001; I2 = 72.0%; Ph<0.001), PFS (n=3; HR=1.59; 95% CI=1.08-2.32; P=0.017; I2 = 0%; Ph=0.772), and CSS (n=2; HR=4.00; 95% CI=1.94-8.25; P<0.001; I2 = 0%; Ph=0.594) than those without, however, the ILA was not significantly associated with the DFS (n=2; HR=2.07; 95% CI=0.94-7.02; P=0.066; I2 = 90.4%; Ph=0.001). Moreover, lung cancer patients with ILA were significantly correlated with male (OR=2.43; 95% CI=1.48-3.98; P<0.001), smoking history (OR=2.11; 95% CI=1.37-3.25; P<0.001), advanced age (OR=2.50; 95% CI=1.56-4.03; P<0.001), squamous carcinoma (OR=0.42; 95% CI=0.24-0.71; P=0.01), and EGFR mutation (OR=0.50; 95% CI=0.32-0.78; P=0.002). The correlation between ILA and race, stage, ALK, however, was not significant. Conclusion: ILA was a availability factors of prognosis in patients with lung cancers. These findings highlight the importance of early pulmonary fibrosis, namely ILA for prognosis in patients with lung cancer, and provide a partial rationale for future clinical work.

RESUMEN

The transformation of solid wastes from industrial production into effective adsorbents could significantly contribute to wastewater treatment. In this study, after acidizing and burning soft scale (SS) from coal gasification system, two magnetic adsorbents (mag-ASS and mag-BASS) were prepared via the combination of magnetite with ultrasonic, respectively. The treatment effects of mag-ASS and mag-BASS were then investigated for simulated wastewater containing macromolecular organic matter [i.e., methylene blue (MB)] and Ca2+. The results indicated that the pseudo second order kinetic, Elovich, Freundlich, Langmuir and Temkin model could well describe the adsorption behavior of MB and Ca2+ onto mag-ASS and mag-BASS. The maximum adsorption capacities of mag-ASS for MB and mag-BASS for Ca2+ were 600.53 mg/g and 102.54 mg/g, respectively. Surprisingly, the adsorption abilities of mag-ASS for MB and mag-BASS for Ca2+ show significantly higher than the others. The adsorption mechanisms of MB mainly included electrostatic interaction, π-π conjugate interaction and cation exchange, while those of Ca2+ were mainly electrostatic interaction and cation exchange. The diffusion of MB and Ca2+ onto the magnetic adsorbents might be controlled by the combined effects of intraparticle and liquid film diffusion. There was no significant reduction in adsorption capacity after 8 cycles of adsorption and desorption, indicating that SS-based magnetic adsorbents had good recyclability and stability. Moreover, the removal efficiency of mag-BASS for total hardness and total organic carbon in real coal gasification gray water (CGGW) was 82.60 and 64.10%, respectively. The treatment of CGGW and the resource of wastes would significantly promote the reasonable disposal of coal gasification scales.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of transcranial direct current stimulation in poststroke patients with upper extremity motor dysfunction using a systematic review and meta-analysis. DATA SOURCES: We searched the Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and PubMed for randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of both active and sham stimulation up until January 27, 2024. REVIEW METHODS: Efficacy, including the upper extremity Fugl-Meyer Assessment, Action Research Arm Test, Barthel Index, and safety, were assessed. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2 tool and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database Scale. Meta-analysis was performed using the RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS: Forty-four studies with 1555 participants were included. Transcranial direct current stimulation proved effective in improving upper extremity motor function (standardized mean difference = 0.22, 95% confidence interval: 0.12-0.32, P < 0.001) and Barthel Index (mean difference = 4.65, 95% confidence interval: 2.82-6.49, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed the highest transcranial direct current stimulation efficacy in patients with subacute stroke. Both anodal and cathodal stimulation were effective against upper extremity motor dysfunction. C3/C4 was the most effective stimulus target. Optimal stimulation parameters included stimulus current densities <0.057 mA/cm2 for 20-30 min and <30 sessions. Adverse effects and dropouts during follow-up showed that transcranial direct current stimulation is safe and feasible. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that both anodal and cathodal stimulation were significantly effective in subacute stroke patients, particularly when preceding other treatments and when C3/C4 is targeted.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the roles of nuclear factor-kappa B p65 (NF-[Formula: see text]B p65) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in cell apoptosis occurring in the fetal membranes of pregnant women who experience preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM). METHODS: This was a case-control study involving 57 pregnant women who delivered in the obstetric department of Affiliated Loudi Hospital, Hengyang Medical School, University of South China, from June 2021 to June 2022. Samples of fetal membrane tissue were collected from pregnant women with PPROM (n=27) and pregnant women who had normal deliveries (control group; n=30). The membrane tissue morphology of both groups was observed, and the expression of NF-[Formula: see text]B p65, p-NF-[Formula: see text]B p65, TNF-α, and caspase-3 was detected. Apoptosis in fetal membranes was examined. RESULTS: Morphological evaluation of the fetal membrane tissues obtained from patients with PPROM revealed an abnormal structure with a thin collagen fiber layer and cells with a largely vacuolar cytoplasm. There was a positive correlation between the expression of p-NF-[Formula: see text]B p65/NF-[Formula: see text]B p65 and cell apoptosis (r1 =0.89, R2 =0.805, P=0.00). Furthermore, TNF-α was positively correlated with fetal membrane cell apoptosis (r2 =0.93, R2=0.881, P=0.00). CONCLUSION: NF-[Formula: see text]B p65 is involved in the occurrence of PPROM by promoting the expression of TNF-α, which upregulates caspase-3 to cause apoptosis of fetal membrane cells.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect and safety of foot baths with Tangbi Waixi Decoction (TW) in treating patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). METHODS: It is a multicenter double-blinded randomized controlled trial. Participants with DPN were recruited between November 18, 2016 and May 30, 2018 from 8 hospitals in China. All patients received basic treatments for glycemic management. Patients received foot baths with TW herbal granules either 66.9 g (intervention group) or 6.69 g (control group) for 30 min once a day for 2 weeks and followed by a 2-week rest, as a therapeutic course. If the Toronto Clinical Scoring System total score (TCSS-TS) ⩾6 points, the patients received a total of 3 therapeutic courses (for 12 weeks) and were followed up for 12 weeks. The primary outcome was change in TCSS-TS score at 12 and 24 weeks. Secondary outcomes included changes in bilateral motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) of the median and common peroneal nerve. Safety was also assessed. RESULTS: Totally 632 patients were enrolled, and 317 and 315 were randomized to the intervention and control groups, respectively. After the 12-week intervention, patients in both groups showed significant declines in TCSSTS scores, and significant increases in MNCV and SNCV of the median and common peroneal nerves compared with pre-treatment (P<0.05). The reduction of TCSS-TS score at 12 weeks and the increase of SNCV of median nerve at 24 weeks in the control group were greater than those in the intervention group (P<0.05). The number of adverse events did not differ significantly between groups (P>0.05), and no serious adverse event was related with treatment. CONCLUSION: Treatment of TW foot baths was safe and significantly benefitted patients with DPN. A low dose of TW appeared to be more effective than a high dose. (Registry No. ChiCTR-IOR-16009331).

RESUMEN

AIMS: Gene therapies to induce cardiomyocyte (CM) cell cycle re-entry have shown a potential to treat subacute ischaemic heart failure (IHF) but have not been tested in the more relevant setting of chronic IHF. Our group recently showed that polycistronic non-integrating lentivirus encoding Cdk1/CyclinB1 and Cdk4/CyclinD1 (TNNT2-4Fpolycistronic-NIL) is effective in inducing CM cell cycle re-entry and ameliorating subacute IHF models and preventing the subsequent IHF-induced congestions in the liver, kidneys, and lungs in rats and pigs. Here, we aim to test the long-term efficacy of TNNT2-4Fpolycistronic-NIL in a rat model of chronic IHF, a setting that differs pathophysiologically from subacute IHF and has greater clinical relevance. METHODS AND RESULTS: Rats were subjected to a 2-h coronary occlusion followed by reperfusion; 4 weeks later, rats were injected intramyocardially with either TNNT2-4Fpolycistronic-NIL or LacZ-NIL. Four months post-viral injection, TNNT2-4Fpolycistronic-NIL-treated rats showed a significant reduction in scar size and a significant improvement in left ventricular (LV) systolic cardiac function but not in the LV dilatation associated with chronic IHF. A mitosis reporter system developed in our lab showed significant induction of CM mitotic activity in TNNT2-4Fpolycistronic-NIL-treated rats. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates, for the first time, that TNNT2-4Fpolycistronic-NIL gene therapy induces CM cell cycle re-entry in chronic IHF and improves LV function, and that this salubrious effect is sustained for at least 4 months. Given the high prevalence of chronic IHF, these results have significant clinical implications for developing a novel treatment for this deadly disease.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to explore and develop data mining models for adult age estimation based on CT reconstruction images from the sternum. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) images of chest CT were retrospectively collected from a modern Chinese population, and data from 2700 patients (1349 males and 1351 females) aged 20 to 70 years were obtained. A staging technique within four indicators was applied. Several data mining models were established, and mean absolute error (MAE) was the primary comparison parameter. The intraobserver and interobserver agreement levels were good. Within internal validation, the optimal data mining model obtained the lowest MAE of 9.08 in males and 10.41 in females. For the external validation (N = 200), MAEs were 7.09 in males and 7.15 in females. In conclusion, the accuracy of our model for adult age estimation was among similar studies. MIP images of the sternum could be a potential age indicator. However, it should be combined with other indicators since the accuracy level is still unsatisfactory.

RESUMEN

Background/aim: Obesity is the fifth largest risk factor of death in the world. The ceramide produced by obesity is closely related to insulin resistance (IR) caused by obesity. At present, the commercially available weight loss products have large side effects and limited therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is particularly important to find effective natural nontoxic products to treat obesity and explore its possible pathways and mechanisms. Materials and methods: In this paper, a high-fat diet (HFD) mice model was established by intragastric administration of high-fat emulsion to investigate the intervention effect of Gooseberry anthocyanins (GA) on IR in HFD mice. We used molecular docking technology to find the binding sites and binding energy of anthocyanins on CerS6. Real-time PCR was used to detect the effect of GA on the expression of IL-6 and TNF-α mRNA in HFD mice. The expression of S1P/Cer signaling pathway in HFD mice with IR was detected by Western Blot. Results: The results showed that GA could effectively inhibit visceral fat, liver index, the level of TC, TG and the level of LDL-C (p < 0.05), and improved HDL-C, GSH-Px and SOD (p < 0.05). GA decreased the level of insulin sensitivity index from -5.15 to -4.54 and improved insulin sensitivity and IR in HFD mice. The binding energy of anthocyanins on CerS6 was in the range of -8.2 to 5.2 kcal/mol, with low energy parameters and good binding positions. GA could reduce mRNA levels of inflammatory factors IL-6 and TNF-α (p < 0.05), inhibit the expression of CerS6, PKCζ, PPARγ, CD36 (p < 0.05), and enhance the expression of SphK2, Akt, p-Akt/Akt, ISR (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study investigated the effect and mechanism of GA on reducing ceramide content and reducing IR in mice, and provided an experimental basis for the prevention and treatment of obesity-related diseases.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: A well-functioning health system ensures timely routine measles vaccinations for age-appropriate children, minimising measles risk. However, there is limited knowledge about the impact of the performance of immunisation programmes in health systems on the timeliness of measles vaccination. This study aimed to identify health system barriers to timely routine measles vaccination in rural southwest China, integrating the perspectives of township vaccination professionals and village doctors. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Qualitative study among township vaccination professionals and village doctors in rural Guangxi, southwest China. METHODS: 20 focus group discussions (FGDs) at township level and 120 in-depth interviews (IDIs) at village level, based on a four-theme framework. We used convenience sampling to recruit 60 township vaccination professionals and 120 village doctors in 2015. Instruments used were a semistructured questionnaire and interview outlines. We collected township and village-level data focusing on themes of health resources allocation, pattern of vaccination services, management and supervision of vaccination services, and perceptions of vaccination policy. The FGDs and IDIs were audio-recorded and transcribed. Braun and Clarke's thematic analysis approach was adopted to synthesise findings into meaningful subthemes, narrative text and illustrative quotations. RESULTS: The health system barriers to timely routine vaccinations were explored across four themes. Barriers in the health resources allocation theme comprised (1) inadequacy of vaccination-related human resources (eg, lack of township vaccination professionals and lack of young village doctors), and (2) incompatible and non-identical information system of vaccination services across regions. Barriers in the pattern of vaccination services theme included inflexible vaccination services models, for example, routine vaccination services being offered monthly on fixed vaccination days, limited numbers of vaccination days per month, vaccination days being set on non-local market days, vaccination days being clustered into a specific period and absence of formal vaccination appointments. Ineffective economic incentive mechanism was identified as a barrier in the management and supervision of vaccination services theme. Low-degree participation of village doctors in routine vaccination services was identified as a barrier in the perceptions of vaccination policy theme. CONCLUSIONS: We encourage policymakers and stakeholders to apply these findings to improve the timeliness of routine vaccination. Barriers to timely routine vaccination include inadequate allocation of vaccination-related resources and inflexible vaccination service delivery models. Financial and non-financial incentives should be used to retain and recruit vaccination professionals and village doctors. Strengthening information systems with unified data standards enables cross-regional data exchange. Optimising immunisation services and rationalising vaccination days could eliminate health system barriers and improve vaccination timeliness in rural China.

RESUMEN

Benign termination of mega-ampere (MA) level runaway current has been convincingly demonstrated in recent JET and DIII-D experiments, establishing it as a leading candidate for runaway mitigation on ITER. This comes in the form of a runaway flush by parallel streaming loss along stochastic magnetic field lines formed by global magnetohydrodynamic instabilities, which are found to correlate with a low-Z injection that purges the high-Z impurities from a post-thermal-quench plasma. Here, we show the competing physics that govern the postflush reconstitution of the runaway current in an ITER-like reactor where significantly higher current is expected. The trapped "runaways" are found to dominate the seeding for runaway reconstitution, and the incomplete purge of high-Z impurities helps drain the seed but produces a more efficient avalanche, two of which compete to produce a 2-3 MA step in current drop before runaway reconstitution of the plasma current.

RESUMEN

Background: POLE is a critical biomarker for endometrial cancer (ECs) prognosis and therapeutic decision. However, the immune infiltration and immunotherapy-related gene expression in the tumor microenvironment (TME) of POLE-mutated ECs remain unresolved. Methods: The TCGA database was used to characterize the TME of POLE mutants, which primarily included immune cells and co-expression genes. We used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to determine immune cell abundance and PD-L1 expression in 104 EC tissues, including 11 POLE mutants and 93 wild-type. Results: The bioinformatic study found significant differences in gene expression of the chemokine family, immune-cell markers, and lysozyme in POLE mutants, along with immune response activation. In POLE-mutated ECs, the abundance of CD4+T, CD8+T, M1 macrophages, and dendritic cells increased considerably. Furthermore, POLE mutations may enhance immune cell recruitment or activation and lymphocyte homing in ECs. POLE mutants also had increased expression of immune-checkpoint suppressor genes such as PD-L1, CTLA-4, TIM-3, and others. The tumor mutation burden (TMB) was higher in ECs with POLE mutation. In the validation cohort, we discovered that POLE mutations were related to the immune infiltration abundance of CD8+, CD4+, and Foxp3+ cells and PD-L1 expression by IHC. The prognosis of TCGA-ECs showed that the survival time of the CD8, CD4, PD-L1, or Foxp3 over-expression subgroup of the POLE mutants was significantly prolonged compared to the down-regulation subgroup or the POLE wild-type. Conclusion: The infiltration abundance of CD8+ T, CD4+ T, Foxp3+ T cells, and the expression of PD-L1 harbor crucial value for the prognosis or individualized therapy of POLE-mutated ECs.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the effects of a micro-video-based flipped classroom teaching model on the standardized training of dermatological residents in China. Methods: A total of 78 residents who had received standardized training at the Department of Dermatology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University were selected and randomly divided into an experimental group (39 residents) and a control group (39 residents). The experimental group received micro-video-based flipped classroom teaching, whereas the control group received traditional lecture-based classroom teaching. Scores relating to theoretical knowledge of dermatology, clinical practice skills, and the results of a questionnaire survey were used to evaluate the teaching effects. Results: The average score of the experimental group in the theoretical knowledge test (88.56 ± 5.80) was significantly higher than that of the control group (81.90 ± 7.45). Similarly, the average score of the experimental group in the clinical practice skills test (85.44 ± 5.97) was also significantly higher than that of the control group (78.46 ± 5.94). The results of the questionnaire survey showed that the experimental group exhibited significant improvements in learning interest, mastery of teaching content, communication skills, expression skills, clinical practice skills, autonomous learning, clinical thinking, clinical application, and team cooperation. Conclusion: Flipped classroom teaching based on micro-videos helped to improve the teaching effects of theoretical knowledge, clinical practice skills, and residents' comprehensive ability during dermatological residents' standardized training.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Spatial epidemiology plays an important role in public health. Yet, it is unclear whether the current university education in spatial epidemiology in China could meet the competency-oriented professional demands. This study aimed to understand the current situation of education and training, practical application, and potential demands in spatial epidemiology among public health postgraduates in China, and to assess the critical gaps in a future emerging infectious diseases (EID) pandemic preparedness and response. METHODS: This study was divided into three parts. The first part was a comparative study on spatial epidemiology education in international public health postgraduate training. The second part was a cross-sectional survey conducted among public health professionals. The third part was a nationwide cross-sectional survey conducted among public health postgraduates at Chinese universities from October 2020 to February 2021. Data was collected by the WeChat-based questionnaire star survey system and analyzed using the SPSS software. RESULTS: International education institutions had required public health postgraduates to master the essential knowledge and capacity of spatial epidemiology. A total of 198 public health professionals were surveyed, and they had a median of 4.00 (IQR 3.13-4.53) in demand degree of spatial epidemiology. A total of 1354 public health postgraduates were surveyed from 51 universities. Only 29.41% (15/51) of universities offered spatial epidemiology course. Around 8.05% (109/1354) of postgraduates had learned spatial epidemiology, and had a median of 1.05 (IQR 1.00-1.29) in learning degree and a median of 1.91 (IQR 1.05-2.78) in practical application degree of spatial epidemiology. To enhance professional capacity, 65.95% (893/1354) of postgraduates hoped that universities would deliver a credit-course of spatial epidemiology. CONCLUSIONS: A huge unmet education and training demand in spatial epidemiology existed in the current education system of public health postgraduates in China. To enhance the competency-oriented professional capacity in preparedness and response to a future pandemic, it is urgent to incorporate the teaching and training of spatial epidemiology into the compulsory curriculum system of public health postgraduates in China.

RESUMEN

Objectives: The study aimed to investigate the effects of sleep and exercise, individually and jointly, on depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. Methods: Cluster sampling was used to conduct a cross-sectional, electronic survey among 11,563 students from five primary and high schools in Sichuan Province in Western China. The questionnaire contained custom-designed items concerning sleep and exercise, while it used the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale to assess depressive symptoms and the Core Self-Evaluations Scale to assess core self-evaluation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multivariate linear regression. Results: A total of 10,185 valid questionnaires were collected, corresponding to an effective response rate of 88.1%. Among the respondents in the final analysis, 5,555 (54.5%) were boys and 4,630 (45.5%) were girls, and the average age was 15.20 ± 1.72 years (range, 11-18 years). Only less than half of the respondents (4,914, 48.2%) reported insufficient sleep, while the remainder (5,271, 51.8%) had adequate sleep. Nearly one-quarter (2,250, 22.1%) reported insufficient exercise, while the remainder (7,935, 77.9%) reported adequate exercise. More than half of the respondents (5,681, 55.7%) were from vocational high school, 3,368 (33.1%) were from junior high school, 945 (9.3%) were from senior high school, and 191 (1.9%) were from primary school. The prevalence of depressive symptoms among all respondents was 29.5% (95% CI 28.7%-30.4%). When other variables were controlled, the depression score did not vary significantly with gender (B = -0.244, SE = 0.127, P = 0.054), but it decreased by 0.194 points per 1-year increase in age (B = -0.194, SE = 0.037, P < 0.001). Students getting adequate sleep had depression scores 2.614 points lower than those getting insufficient sleep (B = -2.614, SE = 0.577, P < 0.001), while students who engaged in adequate exercise had depression scores 1.779 points lower than those not exercising enough (B = -1.779, SE = 0.461, P < 0.001). The depression score decreased by 0.919 points per 1-point increase in the core self-evaluation score (B = -0.919, SE = 0.008, P < 0.001). In regression controlling for gender, age, and core self-evaluation, sleep and exercise were found to be related significantly to influence depressive symptoms (B = 0.821, SE = 0.315, P = 0.009). Conclusion: Adequate sleep and adequate exercise are individually associated with milder depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. Our results further highlight the need for researchers and clinicians to take into account not only the individual but also the joint effects of sleep and exercise on depression in adolescents when conducting research and designing interventions. If sleep or physical exercise has substantially reduced the risk of depressive symptoms, further reductions by improving sleep and exercise become difficult and may even have opposite effects.

RESUMEN

In recent years, higher requirements have been placed on the response characteristics of X-ray detectors in the field of medical diagnostic imaging. Due to this, high sensitivity, high attenuation coefficient and low cost detection materials need to be developed. In this paper, the geometric model of a detector was established by Geant4 code. The absorption efficiency and mass attenuation coefficient of MAPbBr3 crystals were calculated in the energy range of 30 keV to 100 keV. Compared with the mass attenuation coefficient of the NIST database, the deviation was within 1.39%. The signal charge number and detection sensitivity of the X-ray interaction with the MAPbBr3 crystal ware calculated. Compared with the CdTe crystal and α-Se, the MAPbBr3 crystal still had a larger detection sensitivity under a smaller applied electric field, which was approximately 9 times higher than that of α-Se. This result indicated that the detection sensitivity could be greatly improved by using a high atomic number and high charge mobility-lifetime product. Based on the simulation results, the 2 mm thick MAPbBr3 crystal exhibited the highest detection sensitivity at 60 keV X-rays, which was in agreement with the experimental results.

RESUMEN

Identification and quantification of different soil phosphorus (P) fractions level are important for improving agricultural productivity and developing sustainable management practices in these agricultural soils under long-term cultivation. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate P fractions level and their transformation in these soils. This study was conducted to characterize P fractions as affected by different paddy cultivation ages (200, 400-yr and 900-yr) among soils of the Pearl River Delta Plain in China. A sequential chemical fractionation scheme and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P NMR) were employed to quantify various P fractions and speciation. Results showed soil easily-labile P, moderately-labile P and non-labile P had a positive relationship with total P (TP) and available P (AP). Analysis with 31P NMR spectroscopy revealed that inorganic P including orthophosphate (Ortho-P) and pyrophosphate (Pyro-P) increased with cultivation age, while organic species monoester phosphate (Mono-P) and diester phosphate (Diester-P) decreased. Moreover, acid phosphatase (AcP), neutral phosphatase (NeP), exchangeable Ca and sand contents are the main factors that affected the transformation of soil P composition, and non-labile P (Dil.HCl-Pi) and Pyro-P had significant contribution to soil P availability by affecting P activation coefficient. Therefore, long-term paddy cultivation, influenced by these soil parameters including NeP, AcP, exchangeable Ca and sand, accelerated the transformation of soil organic P/non-labile P to inorganic P.

RESUMEN

Nasopharyngeal immune responses are vital for defense against SARS-CoV-2 infection. Although vaccination via muscle immunization has shown a high efficacy in reducing severity and death in COVID-19 infection, breakthrough infection frequently happens because of mutant variants and incompletely established mucosal immunity, especially in the upper respiratory tract. Here, we performed a single-cell RNA and T-cell receptor repertoire sequencing and delineated a high-resolution transcriptome landscape of nasopharyngeal mucosal immune and epithelial cells in vaccinated persons with breakthrough infection and non-vaccinated persons with natural infection as control. The epithelial cells showed anti-virus gene expression diversity and potentially recruited innate immune cells into the nasopharyngeal mucous of vaccinated patients. Upon infection, they released significant pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines by macrophages and monocytes and expressed antigen-presenting relevant genes by dendritic cells. Such immune responses of nasopharyngeal innate immune cells would facilitate the strengthened expression of cytotoxic genes in virus-specific T-cell or B-cell differentiation into antibody-secreting cells at the early stage of breakthrough infection through cell interaction between innate and adaptive immune cells. Notably, these alterations of nasopharyngeal immune cells in breakthrough infection depended on the activated Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) and NOD-, LRR- and pyrin domain-containing protein 3 (NLRP3) signaling rather than type I interferon responses due to the general reduction in interferon-stimulated gene expression. Our findings suggest that vaccination potentially strengthens innate immune barriers and virus-specific memory immune cell responses, which could be quickly activated to defend against variant breakthrough infection and maintain nasopharyngeal epithelial cell integrity. Thus, this study highlights the necessity of a boost via nasal mucous after intramuscular immunization.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although cell therapy provides benefits for outcomes of heart failure, the most optimal cell type to be used clinically remains unknown. Most of the cell products used for therapy in humans require in vitro expansion to obtain a suitable number of cells for treatment; however, the clinical background of the donor and limited starting material may result in the impaired proliferative and reparative capacity of the cells expanded in vitro. Wharton's jelly mesenchymal cells (WJ MSCs) provide a multitude of advantages over adult tissue-derived cell products for therapy. These include large starting tissue material, superior proliferative capacity, and disease-free donors. Thus, WJ MSC if effective would be the most optimal cell source for clinical use. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of Wharton's jelly (WJ) and bone marrow (BM) mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in chronic ischemic cardiomyopathy in rats. METHODS: Human WJ MSCs and BM MSCs were expanded in vitro, characterized, and evaluated for therapeutic efficacy in a immunodeficient rat model of ischemic cardiomyopathy. Cardiac function was evaluated with hemodynamics and echocardiography. The extent of cardiac fibrosis, hypertrophy, and inflammation was assessed with histological analysis. RESULTS: In vitro analysis revealed that WJ MSCs and BM MSCs are morphologically and immunophenotypically indistinguishable. Nevertheless, the functional analysis showed that WJ MSCs have a superior proliferative capacity, less senescent phenotype, and distinct transcriptomic profile compared to BM MSC. WJ MSCs and BM MSC injected in rat hearts chronically after MI produced a small, but not significant improvement in heart structure and function. Histological analysis showed no difference in the scar size, collagen content, cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area, and immune cell count. CONCLUSIONS: Human WJ and BM MSC have a small but not significant effect on cardiac structure and function when injected intramyocardially in immunodeficient rats chronically after MI.
