RESUMEN
The author presents the case of complication caused by nonabsorbable silk surgical sutures which occurred two years and seven month after cesarean section and next hysterectomy performed at the same time. The sutures caused the formation of big vesical stone as well the appearance of acute recurrent pyelonephritis and stricture of the urethra. After lithotripsy, the patient completely recovered.

The purpose of this study was to compare thyroid hormone metabolism between non-cancerous tumor-surrounding human kidney tissues and renal clear cell carcinomas (RCCC). The material consisted of samples taken from 10 RCCC patients of both sexes and three grades of differentiation, G1 to G3. We showed that, similar to rat tissue, type I 5' monodeiodinase (5'DI) expression is heterogeneous within the human kidney. We also found a poor correlation between 5'DI activity and mRNA level in non-cancerous tumor-surrounding tissue suggesting significant post-transcriptional regulation of 5'DI expression by an unidentified process in the human kidney. In all RCCC tissues both 5'DI activity and mRNA levels were undetectable. This suggests either loss of human 5'DI gene expression during neoplastic transformation or the origination of RCCC from a tubular cell type that does not express 5'DI.

Human renal clear cell carcinoma (RCCC) accounts for up to 2% of human cancers. To find out if thyroid hormone (T3) and its receptors (TRs) play a role in tumorigenesis of RCCC, the expression of TRs was evaluated on mRNA and protein level. It was found that TRalpha (both alpha1 and alpha2) mRNA amount was significantly decreased in tumors while compared with healthy kidney tissue, and this decrease was deepest in G1 (well differentiated) RCCCs. In contrast, TRalpha1 protein was 1.6x overexpressed in tumors. TRbeta1 mRNA amount was overexpressed in 30% and significantly decreased in 70% of examined tumors. On the protein level, TRbeta1 amount was 1.7x lower in tumors than in healthy controls.

Investigations were performed in 14 ewes of the Polish Merino race, undergoing the second reproductive cycle. Fundamental indices of the protein and energy metabolism, levels of Ca, P, Mg, Cu, Fe and beta-carotene as well as vitamins A, E and C in the blood plasma and serum were determined. The analyses were carried out during the following periods of the reproductive cycle: 3 weeks before mating, the early and late pregnancy, the culmination and close of lactation. The levels of metabolism indices, especially those of the protein and energy metabolism, were found to vary during the studied periods of the reproductive cycle. In all the periods, low levels (during lactation a deficiency) of Ca and Mg and a distinct deficiency of vitamin C were detected. It seems therefore, necessary to work out the reference values for particular periods of the reproductive cycle.

Between 1987-May 1994 the treatment results of 73 boys with the symptoms of "acute scrotum" were presented. 67 boys were operated. During the operations in 14 cases the torsion of testicle were observed, in 2 cases necrotically changed testicles were removed. Among 53 boys torsion of the appendices of the testis were observed, the appendices were removed. 6 boys with the diagnosis of torsion the appendices of the testis were conservatively treated with a good result. On the basis of literature review and own experiences the children should be qualified for operation by the anamnesis and physical examination independently from additional and sonography results. The acute symptoms of scrotum or inguinal canal in the absence of the testicle in scrotum should indicate at the need for early surgical intervention in case of acute symptoms concerning testicles and scrotum. The epididimitis and orchitis is rare with children before pubescence. One child with the epididimitis abscess, the epididimis was removed.

A case is presented of a patient with multiorgan trauma. The main diagnostic problem was coexisting haemorrhage. Curable skin defects were healed after several covering them with intermediate thickness mesh grafts. The postoperative course was complicated with sepsis and acute non-inflammatory renal failure with polyuria.

Studies on the intercaruncular regions of uterus were carried out on 34 ewes on Days 1-78 of the post-partum period to determine the approximate date of ending post-partum changes and the appearance of morphological sings interrelated with the ovarian cycle phases. It was demonstrated that in sheep the remodelling of endometrium relief lasted until Day 12 of post-partum (p.p.) and at the same time destruction changes in the superficial and glandular epithelium, as well as in the uterine stroma ended. At first, changes in the myometrium (around Day 6--in the longitudinal layer and on Day 10--in the circular layer) were finished. After Day 12 p.p. there was a number of morphological signs indicating the relationship between the ovarian cycle phase and changes in the endometrium of intercaruncular regions of the uterus. At the same time, the role of stromal leucocytes and certain hormones in processes of the involution of uterus was discussed.

Progesterone concentration was determined by RIA in 24 ewes of Polish Merino Breed on 1-40th day after parturition. In most of the studied ewes (58%) 1-3 luteal phases were observed. Elevated concentration of progesterone appeared on days 6-15, but in most cases on the 20th day postpartum approximately. Luteal phases of first oestrous cycles were shortened and lasted approximately 6 days, whereas normal length of oestrous cycles and progesterone concentration illustrating the presence of cyclic corpus luteum were observed on the 25th day after postpartum.

Studies were carried out on 33 Polish Merino sheep. They concerned macro-morphological changes in the sexual organs during the postpartum period. Observations were made from the first to the 41st day postpartum. Changes in the sexual organs were described, as follows: skin swelling and colouring around perineum and vulvar lips, shape and size of the vaginal part of the uterine cervix, colour of the mucosa in the vaginal part of the uterine cervix, degree of opening of the external orifice of the uterine cervix, amount, consistency and colour of the postpartum discharges and uterine mucus. Observations revealed that in the examined group of ewes of the Polish Merino sheep the genital tracts became totally clean of the postpartum discharges, the mucosa of the vaginal part of the uterine cervix and of the vagina regained its normal colour by the 21st day of postpartum. The external orifice of the uterine cervix and the cervical canal also closed completely by this time. On the other hand, changes as to the shape and size of the vaginal part of the uterine cervix persisted as long as 33 days postpartum.

The aim of the conducted research was to establish postpartum oestrous cycles and approximate data for mating Polish Merino sheep. 34 sheep were examined. During sheep laparotomy observations of ovaries and uterus were made on definite days of the postpartum period (1-78). It was stated that after about one-week of postpartum inactivity, the growth and development of follicles occurred in ovaries. First ovulations were noticed from the 15th to 18th day of postpartum, while processes connected with uterus involution were not completed. From the 14th to 18th day of postpartum, casting off of pregnant tissues from caruncules' surfaces into uterus cavity occurred. In the majority of sheep, regeneration of caruncules and purification of uterus cavity were completed by the 30th day of postpartum. The observed compatibility of the phases of ovary cycle with macromorphologically determined functional state of uterus after 30 days of postpartum, in the majority of tested sheep, suggests possibility of successful mating of Polish Merino sheep.
