RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The aim of palatoplasty is to create a functional palate to achieve normal speech, while minimizing post-operative complications. This study aimed to compare the long-term outcomes of modified Furlow palatoplasty using small double-opposing Z-plasty (small-DOZ) and conventional Furlow palatoplasty (conventional-DOZ) performed in a single center. METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive patients who underwent Furlow palatoplasty between May 2007 and March 2014 was executed. Non-syndromic patients subjected to palatoplasty prior to 24 months of age and followed-up until at least 9 years of age were included. RESULTS: A total of 196 small-DOZ and 280 conventional-DOZ palatoplasty patients were included in this study. Overall, 14 patients (2.9%) developed oronasal fistula, and 40 patients (8.4%) received velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) surgery. In comparisons, oronasal fistula rate was significantly higher in conventional-DOZ (0.5% vs. 4.6%, p = 0.01), and the VPI prevalence was not significantly different (9.2% vs. 7.9%, p = 0.62). Patients who developed fistula had a significantly higher likelihood of developing VPI than patients without oronasal fistula (50.0% vs. 7.1%, respectively; p < 0.01), with an odds ratio of 13.0. CONCLUSION: Both modalities of palatoplasty yielded commendable velopharyngeal function in the long-term follow-up. The small-DOZ with reduced tension lowered the risk of oronasal fistula.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Segmental Le Fort I osteotomy through the cleft is a common strategy to narrow the alveolar cleft in adults. This study compared skeletal stability between single and segmental Le Fort I osteotomies in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective analysis examined 45 adults with complete UCLP-associated class III deformities who underwent bimaxillary surgery with either single (n = 30) or segmental (n = 15) Le Fort I advancement. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of the facial skeleton were acquired before surgery, 1-week postsurgery, and at follow-up. Measures of landmarks from the CBCT images for the two treatment groups were compared for translation (left/right, posterior/anterior, superior/inferior) and rotation (yaw, roll, pitch). RESULTS: Postsurgery, the downward movement of the maxilla was larger in the segmental group than the single group. At follow-up, the maxilla moved backward in both groups, and upward in the segmental group. The mandible moved forward and upward and rotated upward in both groups. The amount of upward movement and rotation was larger in the segmental group than the single group. CONCLUSIONS: Two years after bimaxillary surgery in patients with UCLP-associated class III deformity, greater relapse was found after segmental Le Fort I osteotomies in vertical translation of the maxilla and mandible, and pitch rotation of the mandible compared with single Le Fort I osteotomies. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The vertical relapse of the maxilla was larger after segmental Le Fort I advancement compared with single Le Fort I advancement in clefts.

RESUMEN

RNA silencing (or RNA interference, RNAi) is a conserved mechanism for regulating gene expression in eukaryotes, which plays vital roles in plant development and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. The discovery of trans-kingdom RNAi and interspecies RNAi provides a theoretical basis for exploiting RNAi-based crop protection strategies. Here, we summarize the canonical RNAi mechanisms in plants and review representative studies associated with plant-pathogen interactions. Meanwhile, we also elaborate upon the principles of host-induced gene silencing, spray-induced gene silencing and microbe-induced gene silencing, and discuss their applications in crop protection, thereby providing help to establish novel RNAi-based crop protection strategies.

RESUMEN

In this study, the photoelectric properties of a complete series of GaS1-xSex (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) layered crystals are investigated. The photoconductivity spectra indicate a decreasing bandgap of GaS1-xSex as the Se composition x increases. Time-resolved photocurrent measurements reveal a significant improvement in the response of GaS1-xSex to light with increasing x. Frequency-dependent photocurrent measurements demonstrate that both pure GaS crystals and GaS1-xSex ternary alloy crystals exhibit a rapid decrease in photocurrents with increasing illumination frequency. Crystals with lower x exhibit a faster decrease in photocurrent. However, pure GaSe crystal maintains its photocurrent significantly even at high frequencies. Measurements for laser-power-dependent photoresponsivity and bias-voltage-dependent photoresponsivity also indicate an increase in the photoresponsivity of GaS1-xSex as x increases. Overall, the photoresponsive performance of GaS1-xSex is enhanced with increasing x, and pure GaSe exhibits the best performance. This result contradicts the findings of previous reports. Additionally, the inverse trends between bandgap and photoresponsivity with increasing x suggest that GaS1-xSex-based photodetectors could potentially offer a high response and wavelength-selectivity for UV and visible light detection. Thus, this work provides novel insights into the photoelectric characteristics of GaS1-xSex layered crystals and highlights their potential for optoelectronic applications.

RESUMEN

Background: Evidence shows people living with CHB even with a normal ALT (40U/L as threshold) suffer histological disease and there is still little research to evaluate the potential benefit of antiviral benefits in them. Methods: We retrospectively examined 1352 patients who underwent liver biopsy from 2017 to 2021 and then obtained their 1-year follow-up data to analyze. Results: ALT levels were categorized into high and low, with thresholds set at >29 for males and >15 for females through Youden's Index. The high normal ALT group showed significant histological disease at baseline (56.43% vs 43.82%, p< 0.001), and better HBV DNA clearance from treatment using PSM (p=0.005). Similar results were obtained using 2016 AASLD high normals (male >30, female >19). Further multivariate logistic analysis showed that high normal ALT (both criterias) was an independent predictor of treatment (OR 1.993, 95% CI 1.115-3.560, p=0.020; OR 2.000, 95% CI 1.055-3.793, p=0.034) Both of the models had higher AUC compared with current scoring system, and there was no obvious difference between the two models (AUC:0.8840 vs 0.8835). Conclusion: Male >30 or female >19 and Male >29 or female>15 are suggested to be better thresholds for normal ALT. Having a high normal ALT in CHB provides a potential benefit in antiviral therapy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aims to compare the clinical outcomes and safety of a novel hand-held retractor system-assisted Wiltse TLIF with that P-TLIF and assess whether this hand-held retractor system assisted Wiltse TLIF can yield less paraspinal muscle injury. METHODS: 56 patients (P-TLIF: 26, Wiltse TLIF: 30) were included in this one year prospective controlled study. The operation time, intraoperative blood loss, postoperative drainage, mobilization time, and discharge time were recorded. The clinical outcomes were evaluated by ODI, VAS, JOA, and SF-36 scores (7 days, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery). Paraspinal muscle injury was assessed by postoperative MRI (6 months after surgery). CK and C-reaction protein were measured pre and postoperatively, and CT or X-ray (one year postoperatively) was used to assess bony union/non-union. RESULTS: The Wiltse (study) group was associated with significantly less estimated blood loss (79.67 ± 28.59 ml vs 192.31 ± 59.48 ml, P = 0.000*), postoperative drainage (43.33 ± 27.89 ml vs 285.57 ± 123.05 ml, P = 0.000*), and shorter mobilization (4.1 ± 1.2 d vs. 3.0 ± 0.9 d, P < 0.05) and discharge times (7.7 ± 1.9 d vs. 6.1 ± 1.2 d, P = 0.002*) than the P-TLIF (control) group. Serum CK activity at 24 h postoperatively in the study group was significantly lower than in the control group (384.10 ± 141.99 U/L vs 532.76 ± 225.76 U/L, P = 0.018*). At 7 days after surgery, VAS (2.3 ± 0.6 vs 3.2 ± 0.7, P = 0.000*)and ODI scores (43.9 ± 11.9 vs 55.2 ± 12.9, P = 0.001*) were lower, while the JOA scores (18.4 ± 3.4 vs 16.3 ± 4.2, P = 0.041*) was higher in the control group than in the study group. Results observed at 3 months of follow-up were consistent with those at 7 days. After six months postoperatively, paraspinal muscle degeneration in the control group was more significant than in the study group (P = 0.008*). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that this novel hand-held retractor system assisted Wiltse approach TLIF can significantly reduce paraspinal muscle injury, postoperative drainage, and intraoperative blood loss, mobilization and discharge time, as well as yield better short-term outcomes compared to P-TLIF. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The Chang Gung Forum has been dedicated to the care of craniofacial anomalies since 2000. This annual continuing medical education program focuses on orofacial cleft and surgery-first orthognathic surgery by providing up-to-date information and management guidelines. This study explored how the Chang Gung Forum has influenced medical perspectives, decisions, and practices in a multidisciplinary craniofacial team. METHODS: Between 2000 and 2022, 20 Chang Gung Forums have been held. A questionnaire was distributed among 170 attendees who had participated in the forum more than once. The questionnaire collected information on the participants' experiences and levels of satisfaction with the educational program and whether or how it had influenced their clinical practice. RESULTS: Valid responses from 86 attendees (response rate, 50.6%) who had participated more than once were collected and analyzed. The overall satisfaction rate of the Chang Gung Forum based on the respondents' most recent visits was 4.28 ± 0.63 out of 5. Of the respondents, 90.9% acknowledged changes in their clinical practice, with modifications in surgery plans and decisions being the most notable (48.5%). In addition, comprehension increased throughout years of attending the annual forum (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The Chang Gung Forum has contributed markedly to the community of congenital craniofacial anomalies. The program will continue providing updated information and influencing the clinical decision-making of health care professionals.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is an important period for the development of the possible self. It is also a time when depression is prevalent. The cognitive theory of depression proposes that a negative view of the future is a key feature of depression. Targeting these negative thoughts about the future during cognitive behavioural therapy may be helpful in depression. However, little is known about how adolescents envisage their future (i.e. possible) self, or if the content is associated with affect. The aim of this quantitative study is to describe how adolescents describe their 'possible self' and examine the relationship between the valence of the possible self and depression in adolescents. METHOD: Adolescents (n = 584) aged 13-18 years were recruited via opportunity sampling via their schools and completed measures of depression symptoms (the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire) and the 'possible self' (a variant of the 'I Will Be' task). Possible selves were coded for content and valence. RESULTS: Despite depression severity, the most common possible selves generated by adolescents were positive and described interpersonal roles. The valence of the possible self was associated with depression severity but only accounted for 3.4% of the variance in severity. CONCLUSION: The results support the cognitive model of depression. However, adolescents with elevated symptoms of depression were able to generate positive, possible selves and therefore may remain somewhat 'hopeful' about their future despite clinically significant depression symptoms. Future-oriented treatment approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy that focus on changing unhelpful negative future thinking may not be appropriate for this population.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The rating result reflects not only the performance of the candidate but some extent of the examiner's preference. Examiner bias could be objective, which means it can't be changed by the examiner like gender, age, race, educational level, or professional experience. No study about examiner bias was performed in the dental education realm, especially in the orthodontic field. Therefore, this study aimed to figure out possible influencing factors in examiners from examples of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontist examination. METHODS: The examiner groups comprised 29 males and 21 females selected from the certificated Taiwan Board of Orthodontists. Every examiner would receive a series of lectures about rating standards before the exam. The score data were collected from 2009 to 2019. RESULTS: As for the univariate regression model of the Taiwan Board of Orthodontist examination, the experienced examiner with a certification of more than 15 years tends to rate more leniently, but female examiners tend to rate harsher. The scores would increase with the examiner's age in both the univariate regression model of self-prepared and assigned cases. CONCLUSION: As for the multivariate model of self-prepared exams, the elder and the examiner who work in private practice clinics tend to rate more leniently. As for the multivariate model of the assigned case exam, the score would be only affected by age. However, further studies are necessary to determine the direct relation among these factors.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although several studies have reported the advantages of the surgery-first approach for orthognathic correction of class III deformity, there is no report of the success of this approach for patients with cleft lip and palate. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability and outcome of bimaxillary surgery for cleft-related dentofacial deformity using a surgery-first approach. METHODS: Forty-one patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate who consecutively underwent Le Fort I and bilateral sagittal split osteotomies for skeletal class III deformity were included. Cone-beam computed tomographic scans before surgery, 1 week after surgery, and after orthodontic treatment were used to measure the surgical and postsurgical changes in jaw position by landmarks, and outcomes of jaw protrusion and relation, incisor angle and occlusion, and menton deviation after treatment. Self-report questionnaires regarding satisfaction with overall appearance of the face and seven facial regions were administered after treatment. RESULTS: A clinically insignificant relapse was found in the maxilla (<1 mm) and mandible (<2 mm). There was a significant improvement in the jaw protrusion and relation, incisor angle and occlusion, and menton deviation. Responses from the self-report questionnaires completed after treatment indicated that patient satisfaction was high. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrate surgical-orthodontic treatment with a surgery-first approach can successfully improve cleft-related dentofacial deformity in patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate. CLINICAL QUESTION/LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Therapeutic, IV.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the three-dimensional (3D) quantitative characteristics of the surgical occlusion setup in surgery-first cleft orthognathic surgery, and to evaluate its influence on post-surgical skeletal stability. METHODS: This prospective study was comprised of 35 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate and class III deformity who consecutively underwent two-jaw surgery with surgery-first approach. Digitized dental models were analyzed to quantify the 3D characteristics of the final surgical occlusion setup. Cone-beam computed tomography was used to measure the 3D surgical skeletal movement and post-surgical skeletal stability. The correlation between skeletal stability and surgical occlusal contact or surgical skeletal movement was also evaluated. RESULTS: The surgical occlusion setup had a large incisor overjet and positive overbite, and buccal cross bite and open bite on second molars. Occlusal contact on three segments was present in 51.4% of the patients, and the average number for tooth contact was 4.3 teeth. No correlation was found between maxillary or mandibular stability and surgical occlusal contact. However, a significant correlation was found between maxillary and mandibular stability and the surgical skeletal movement. CONCLUSIONS: The surgical occlusion for correction of cleft-associated class III deformity using the surgery-first approach was characterized with large overjet and positive overbite, and posterior cross bite and open bite. On average, there was occlusal contact on four to five teeth; half of surgical occlusion setups had contact on three segments. The post-surgical skeletal stability was not related to the surgical occlusal contact but to the surgical skeletal movement.

RESUMEN

Virtual ecological technology is a new technology that builds the foundation of a digital ecological system, simulates the process of ecological evolution, and establishes a global knowledge analysis system based on a unified spatio-temporal benchmark. It is a new direction for the interdisciplinary integration and development of eco-logy, geographic information science, computer science and other subjects towards modernization, informatization, and intelligence. Research, development, and application of virtual ecological technology is of great significance for the development of ecology as a discipline, ecosystem management, and regional sustainable development. Curren-tly, research on virtual ecological technology is still in its infancy and lacks a complete and clearly defined framework, making it difficult to support systematic iterative development and scientific analysis. In this paper, starting from the main theories and objectives of modern ecology, we summarized the main contents and technical requirements of virtual ecological construction, and proposed a key technical system of virtual ecology that integrated vir-tual geography and digital twin technology. From the perspective of application scenarios, we analyzed the application capabilities of virtual ecological technology in air pollution and energy analysis. Finally, we summarized the deve-lopment potential of virtual ecological technology in the digital construction of the ecological environment, intelligent computing, and realistic expression of different levels of ecological space resources transformation under the background of new generation of information technology, both at the local computing point breakthrough and the global technology point fusion aspects. This would enrich and advance the technical capabilities that support China's ecological space resource transformation.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Gingivoperiosteoplasty is often used for reconstruction of alveolar defects in infants with cleft lip and palate. This study aimed to examine outcomes of tertiary gingivoperiosteoplasty, which has not previously been investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study included 11 adults with complete cleft lip and palate (n = 12 sites) who consecutively underwent segmental Le Fort I osteotomy and concomitant gingivoperiosteoplasty for correction of skeletal class III deformity, nasoalveolar fistula and alveolar cleft. Outcomes included clinical and radiographic evaluations of gingivoperiosteoplasty at the time of osteotomy (presence of nasoalveolar fistula, residual cleft defect and unsupported root ratio of cleft-adjacent teeth), and determination of influencing factors for the clinical success of alveolar cleft repair. Study variables included age, gender, pre-surgical orthodontic treatment and alveolar cleft width of cleft-adjacent canine and angulation between cleft-adjacent teeth before surgery and 1-week postsurgery. RESULTS: Posttreatment, no nasoalveolar fistula remained. The residual cleft defect decreased significantly (p < 0.01). The unsupported root ratio of cleft-adjacent teeth did not differ (p > 0.05); eight cleft sites reached Bergland I or II (67% success). One-week postsurgery, the minimal alveolar cleft width of cleft-adjacent canine was significantly less in the success group compared with the failed group (p = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Tertiary gingivoperiosteoplasty and segmental Le Fort I osteotomy decreased nasoalveolar fistulas and induced alveolar bone formation. The minimal alveolar cleft width immediately after surgery was the major influencing factor of clinical success. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Segmental Le Fort I osteotomy with simultaneous gingivoperiosteoplasty efficaciously repairs adult alveolar clefts.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine, dissect, and understand the molecular mechanisms and combinatorial effects of Zuogui (, ZGP) and Yougui pills (, YGP) in 4-vinyl cyclohexene diepoxide (4-VCD)-induced Perimenopausal syndrome (PMS). METHODS: Using the 4-VCD-induced PMS mouse model, uterine and ovary index were measured, and serum sex steroidal hormone levels were evaluated after treatment with ZGP, YGP, ZGP + YGP, estradiol valerate (EV), and Gengnian An (gengnianan, GNA). Histopathological examinations, ingredient-target network predictions, western blotting, and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) analyses were performed to ascertain the possible pharmacological effects and molecular mechanisms of ZYP and YGP. RESULTS: Treatment with ZGP and YGP remarkably improves estrous cyclicity and prevents pathological damage to the uterus. Also, altered sex hormones, including AMH, E2, FSH, LH, P, and T, were restored to normal levels after ZGP and YGP administration. Ingredient-target network analysis showed that the 5 ingredients common to the ZGP and YGP formula modulate 53 targets shared with PMS. Pathway-enrichment analysis further predicted that ZGY and YGP likely regulate of apoptosis and other essential pathways during PMS. In-vivo studies showed that ZGP and YGP suppress PMS modulating apoptosis through decreasing Caspase-3 and Bcl-2-associated X (Bax) levels and increasing B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2)/Bax and Bcl-2 levels. Importantly, ZGP + YGP treatment modulation effects were somewhat or significantly better compared to ZGP or YGP alone treatment. CONCLUSION: ZGP and YGP represent novel anti-PMS agents whose effects involve restoring altered hormonal levels, protecting the uterus, and regulating apoptosis.

RESUMEN

Amyloid PET imaging has been crucial for detecting the accumulation of amyloid beta (Aß) deposits in the brain and to study Alzheimer's disease (AD). We performed a genome-wide association study on the largest collection of amyloid imaging data (N = 13,409) to date, across multiple ethnicities from multicenter cohorts to identify variants associated with brain amyloidosis and AD risk. We found a strong APOE signal on chr19q.13.32 (top SNP: APOE ɛ4; rs429358; ß = 0.35, SE = 0.01, P = 6.2 × 10-311, MAF = 0.19), driven by APOE ɛ4, and five additional novel associations (APOE ε2/rs7412; rs73052335/rs5117, rs1081105, rs438811, and rs4420638) independent of APOE ɛ4. APOE ɛ4 and ε2 showed race specific effect with stronger association in Non-Hispanic Whites, with the lowest association in Asians. Besides the APOE, we also identified three other genome-wide loci: ABCA7 (rs12151021/chr19p.13.3; ß = 0.07, SE = 0.01, P = 9.2 × 10-09, MAF = 0.32), CR1 (rs6656401/chr1q.32.2; ß = 0.1, SE = 0.02, P = 2.4 × 10-10, MAF = 0.18) and FERMT2 locus (rs117834516/chr14q.22.1; ß = 0.16, SE = 0.03, P = 1.1 × 10-09, MAF = 0.06) that all colocalized with AD risk. Sex-stratified analyses identified two novel female-specific signals on chr5p.14.1 (rs529007143, ß = 0.79, SE = 0.14, P = 1.4 × 10-08, MAF = 0.006, sex-interaction P = 9.8 × 10-07) and chr11p.15.2 (rs192346166, ß = 0.94, SE = 0.17, P = 3.7 × 10-08, MAF = 0.004, sex-interaction P = 1.3 × 10-03). We also demonstrated that the overall genetic architecture of brain amyloidosis overlaps with that of AD, Frontotemporal Dementia, stroke, and brain structure-related complex human traits. Overall, our results have important implications when estimating the individual risk to a population level, as race and sex will needed to be taken into account. This may affect participant selection for future clinical trials and therapies.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patients with cleft lip and palate have functional and esthetic impairment and typically require multiple interventions in their life. Long-term evaluation following a treatment protocol, especially for patients with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP), is important but was rarely reported in the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on all patients with complete BCLP born between 1995 and 2002 and treated at our center. Inclusion criteria were having adequate medical records and receiving continuous multidisciplinary team care at least until 20 years of age. Exclusion criteria were lack of regular follow-up and congenital syndromic abnormalities. The medical records and photos were reviewed, and facial bone development was evaluated using cephalometric analysis. RESULTS: A total of 122 patients were included, with a mean age of 22.1 years at the final evaluation in this study. Primary one-stage cheiloplasty was performed in 91.0% of the patients, and 9.0% underwent two-stage repair with an initial adhesion cheiloplasty. All patients underwent two-flap palatoplasty at an average of 12.3 months. Surgical intervention for velopharyngeal insufficiency was required in 59.0% of patients. Revisional lip/nose surgery was performed in 31.1% during growing age and in 64.8% after skeletal maturity. Orthognathic surgery was applied in 60.7% of patients with retruded midface, of which 97.3% underwent two-jaw surgery. The average number of operations to complete the treatment was 5.9 per patient. CONCLUSION: Patients with complete BCLP remain the most challenging group to treat among the cleft. This review revealed certain suboptimal results, and modifications have been made to the treatment protocol. Longitudinal follow-up and periodic assessment help to establish an ideal therapeutic strategy and improve overall cleft care.

RESUMEN

To investigate the effects of combining a "six heart" nursing model intervention with comfortable nursing in patients suffering from primary liver cancer receiving radiotherapy. Between March 2017 to March 2022, 70 patients having liver cancer who received radiotherapy at our hospital were chosen and separated into observation and control groups employing the random number table technique, and each group consisted of 35 cases. Patients of the observation group received "six heart" nursing model intervention in addition to comfort nursing based on conventional intervention, while the control group's patients received standard nursing intervention during radiotherapy. After the intervention, the observation groups' scores and total scores of physical and emotional burden and the scores of escaping and yielding were significantly lower than those of the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). Following the intervention, each dimension's scores, total score and of the resilience scale and the scores of general well-being and quality of life of the observation group were significantly greater in comparison to the control group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). The observation group's overall nursing satisfaction rate was 100.00%, which showed a statistically significant difference from the control group's 85.71 (P<0.05). "Six heart" nursing model intervention combined with comfortable nursing can help reduce patients' self-perceived burden, improve psychological resilience, improve patients' general well-being and quality of life.

RESUMEN

Background: There are a growing number of case reports of various autoimmune diseases occurring after COVID-19, yet there is no large-scale population-based evidence to support this potential association. This study provides a closer insight into the association between COVID-19 and autoimmune diseases and reveals discrepancies across sex, age, and race of participants. Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study based on the TriNetX U.S. Collaborative Network. In the test-negative design, cases were participants with positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test results for SARS-CoV-2, while controls were participants who tested negative and were not diagnosed with COVID-19 throughout the follow-up period. Patients with COVID-19 and controls were propensity score-matched (1: 1) for age, sex, race, adverse socioeconomic status, lifestyle-related variables, and comorbidities. The primary endpoint is the incidence of newly recorded autoimmune diseases. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHRs) and 95% confident intervals (CIs) of autoimmune diseases were calculated between propensity score-matched groups with the use of Cox proportional-hazards regression models. Findings: Between January 1st, 2020 and December 31st, 2021, 3,814,479 participants were included in the study (888,463 cases and 2,926,016 controls). After matching, the COVID-19 cohort exhibited significantly higher risks of rheumatoid arthritis (aHR:2.98, 95% CI:2.78-3.20), ankylosing spondylitis (aHR:3.21, 95% CI:2.50-4.13), systemic lupus erythematosus (aHR:2.99, 95% CI:2.68-3.34), dermatopolymyositis (aHR:1.96, 95% CI:1.47-2.61), systemic sclerosis (aHR:2.58, 95% CI:2.02-3.28), Sjögren's syndrome (aHR:2.62, 95% CI:2.29-3.00), mixed connective tissue disease (aHR:3.14, 95% CI:2.26-4.36), Behçet's disease (aHR:2.32, 95% CI:1.38-3.89), polymyalgia rheumatica (aHR:2.90, 95% CI:2.36-3.57), vasculitis (aHR:1.96, 95% CI:1.74-2.20), psoriasis (aHR:2.91, 95% CI:2.67-3.17), inflammatory bowel disease (aHR:1.78, 95%CI:1.72-1.84), celiac disease (aHR:2.68, 95% CI:2.51-2.85), type 1 diabetes mellitus (aHR:2.68, 95%CI:2.51-2.85) and mortality (aHR:1.20, 95% CI:1.16-1.24). Interpretation: COVID-19 is associated with a different degree of risk for various autoimmune diseases. Given the large sample size and relatively modest effects these findings should be replicated in an independent dataset. Further research is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms.
