RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This article explores the ongoing relevance of cement-retained implant restorations, focusing on their contemporary rationales for their successful use. Comprehensive considerations include esthetic, positional, and occlusal factors alongside recent technological advancements designed to mitigate previous known challenges. OVERVIEW: In certain clinical scenarios, cement-retained implant restorations offer distinct advantages such as eliminating access holes for improved esthetics, particularly for malpositioned implants. Modern advancements in materials and techniques have enhanced their predictability, safety, and overall outcomes while minimizing biological risks. CONCLUSIONS: When performed within appropriate protocols, cement-retained implant restorations can effectively address diverse clinical challenges. Recent technical advancements further bolster their utility, supporting esthetic, technical, biomechanical, and biological outcomes in implant rehabilitation of the partially edentulous esthetic zone. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the justifications and guidelines for cement-retained implant restorations, along with recent technological advancements, enables clinicians to optimize treatment outcomes with greater flexibility while minimizing common limitations in practice.

RESUMEN

Naval shipboard operations impose numerous environmental and occupational stressors, which can adversely affect mental and physical health outcomes. Moreover, this operational setting also complicates the implementation of countermeasures to protect personnel from these stressors. Thus, any easily accessible or modifiable protective factors should be explored further for their potential to support the health of military personnel. Daily sunlight exposure is one such factor that has demonstrated positive effects on health outcomes. For the current study, sunlight exposure and self-reported health outcomes were explored in a large population of U.S. Navy personnel (N > 11,000). Mediator analyses examined the relationship between mental and physical health while controlling for key confounding variables such as morale and exercise. Although the overall regression models indicated only a slight impact on physical health, sunlight exposure had a significant direct effect on mental health even while controlling for the mediating influence of morale. Sunlight exposure also had an impact on morale and an indirect influence on mental health through morale. Additional analyses further supported the possible mental health benefits of sunlight exposure even while accounting for occupational differences. The results suggest that prescribed sunlight exposure aboard ships could be used to promote positive mental health during naval operations.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral instability (PFI) is a common problem with various anatomic risk factors identified, including patella alta as one of the most powerful predictors. Given that the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) is the primary soft tissue stabilizer of the patella, a common procedure to treat recurrent patellar instability is MPFL reconstruction. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between MPFL reconstruction and patellar height. We hypothesize that after reconstruction, patellar instability patients would have demonstrable reduction in patella height and patella alta correction. METHODS: Patient records were queried for patients who underwent MPFL reconstruction for recurrent patellar instability. Patient and operative demographics were collected. We measured Insall-Salvati ratio (ISR), Caton Deschamps index (CDI), and Blackburne-Peel ratio (BPR) in all patients at various time points. The height indices were compared across the preoperative, immediately postoperative, and 6-month time points in a pairwise fashion using paired-sample t-tests. Further subgroup analysis of patients (n=27) with elevated preoperative Caton Deschamps Index (defined as >1.3) was completed. RESULTS: The final cohort was 103 patients. There was a significant difference between pre- and postoperative ISR (P<0.001) and at 6-month follow up (P<0.001), between preoperative CDI and the 6-month follow-up (P<0.0010), and between the postoperative and preoperative CDI (P<0.001). There was also a difference between preoperative and postoperative BPR (P<0.001), as well as between the preoperative and 6-month follow-up BPR (P=0.002). Twenty-seven patients had an initial CDI greater than 1.3. Differences were observed between pre- and postoperative mean CDI (P=0.001) and at 6-month follow-up (P=0.006), between both postoperative and 6-month ISR (both P<0.001), and preoperative mean BPR and the postoperative (P=0.004) and 6-month mean BPR (P=0.027). CONCLUSIONS: Patients with pre-existing patella alta and recurrent patella dislocations who undergo isolated MPFL reconstruction have decreased patella alta at their 6-month follow-up as measured by ISR, CDI, and BPR. Patients without patella alta do not demonstrate statistically significant differences after their MPFL reconstruction. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III (retrospective comparative study).

RESUMEN

Global discovery lipidomics can provide comprehensive chemical information toward understanding the intricacies of metabolic lipid disorders such as dyslipidemia; however, the isomeric complexity of lipid species remains an analytical challenge. Orthogonal separation strategies, such as ion mobility (IM), can be inserted into liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) untargeted lipidomic workflows for additional isomer separation and high-confidence annotation, and the emergence of high-resolution ion mobility (HRIM) strategies provides marked improvements to the resolving power (Rp > 200) that can differentiate small structural differences characteristic of isomers. One such HRIM strategy, high-resolution demultiplexing (HRdm), utilizes multiplexed drift tube ion mobility spectrometry (DTIMS) with post-acquisition algorithmic deconvolution to access high IM resolutions while retaining the measurement precision inherent to the drift tube technique; however, HRdm has yet to be utilized in untargeted studies. In this manuscript, a proof-of-concept study using ATP10D dysfunctional murine models was investigated to demonstrate the utility of HRdm-incorporated untargeted lipidomic analysis pipelines. Total lipid features were found to increase by 2.5-fold with HRdm compared to demultiplexed DTIMS as a consequence of more isomeric lipids being resolved. An example lipid, PC 36:5, was found to be significantly higher in dysfunctional ATP10D mice with two resolved peaks observed by HRdm that were absent in both the functional ATP10D mice and the standard demultiplexed DTIMS acquisition mode. The benefits of utilizing HRdm for discerning isomeric lipids in untargeted workflows have the potential to enhance our analytical understanding of lipids related to disease complexity and biologically relevant studies.

RESUMEN

The relationship between physical activity levels and feeding behaviors has been a focus of preclinical research for decades, yet this interaction has only recently been explored for potential sex differences. The aim of the present study was to isolate sex-dependent effects of voluntary wheel running (RUN) vs. sedentary locked wheel (SED) home cage conditions on palatability-driven feeding behavior using a 2-diet choice task between standard chow and a high-fat diet. The sex-dependent effects of physical activity on feeding behavior were examined following a within-subject novel reversal design of physical activity conditions (i.e., RUN > SED > RUN), to assess temporal sensitivity of the interaction. Following the final 2 weeks of reestablished and sustained RUN vs. SED conditions in separate groups of both males and females, reward-related opioid and dopamine gene expression within the nucleus accumbens (Acb) brain region were analyzed. Results demonstrated that the initial RUN > SED transition led to sex-dependent effects of SED condition, as males increased, and females decreased their high fat consumption, compared to their respective high fat consumption during previous RUN condition phase. Following reintroduction to the RUN condition, males decreased, and females increased their high fat consumption, compared to their separate SED control group. Last, sex-dependent shifts in ventral striatal opioid- and dopamine-related gene expression were observed to parallel the behavioral effects. The major findings of the study reveal that SED and RUN home cage conditions shift palatability-driven feeding in the opposite direction for males and females, these effects are sensitive to reversal, and these sex-dependent feeding behaviors track sex-dependent changes to critical reward-related gene expression patterns in the Acb. Considering the present high rates of sedentary behavior and obesity, furthering our understanding of the interaction between physical activity (or lack thereof) and feeding behavior should be a priority, especially in the context of these divergent sex-dependent outcomes.

RESUMEN

Environmental concerns about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are considerably increasing due to their extensive use in commercial and consumer products. PFAS bioaccumulate and biomagnify throughout the food chain, and their toxicity and potential adverse health effects can potentially represent a threat to living organisms. In this study, we described PFAS profiles in the serum of two species of zoo-based bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus, n = 14 individuals) and killer whales (Orcinus orca, n = 14 individuals) from three locations (California, Florida, and Texas, USA), from 1994 to 2020. Potential physiological effects of PFAS were also explored by measuring different biomarkers (cortisol, corticosterone, aldosterone, TBARS, and hydrogen peroxide) while accounting for individual age, sex, and reproductive stage. All PFAS were detected in at least one of the individuals, considering both species. ΣPFAS reached 496 ng mL-1 in bottlenose dolphins and 230 ng mL-1 in killer whales. In both species, the PFAS with higher mean concentrations were PFOS (108.0-183.0 ng ml-1) and PFNA (14.40-85.50 ng ml-1), which are long-chain compounds. Newborn individuals of both species were also exposed to PFAS, indicating transference via placenta and lactation. Linear mixed model analyses indicated significant correlations between aldosterone, month, year, location, and status; and between hydrogen peroxide, month, year, age, status, ΣPFAS, and Σ short-chain PFAS in killer whales suggesting seasonal variations related to the animal's physiological state (e.g., reproductive cycles, stress responses, weaning events) and increased reactive oxygen species formation due to PFAS exposure. Given our results, other contaminant classes should be investigated in cetaceans as they might have additive and synergistic detrimental effects on these individuals. This study lays the foundation to guide future researchers and highlights the importance of such assessments for animal welfare, and species conservation. Our results may inform management decisions regarding regulations of contaminant thresholds in delphinids.

RESUMEN

Type IV P-type ATPases (P4-ATPases) are lipid flippases that generate an asymmetric membrane organization essential for cell viability. The five budding yeast P4-ATPases traffic between the Golgi complex, plasma membrane, and endosomes but how they are recycled from the endolysosomal system to the Golgi complex is poorly understood. In this study, we find that P4-ATPase endosomal recycling is primarily driven by the retromer complex and the F-box protein Rcy1. Defects in P4-ATPase recycling result in their mislocalization to the vacuole and a substantial loss of membrane asymmetry. The P4-ATPases contain multiple predicted retromer sorting signals, and the characterization of these signals in Dnf1 and Dnf2 led to the identification of a novel retromer-dependent signal, IPM[ST] that acts redundantly with predicted motifs. Together, these results emphasize the importance of endosomal recycling for the functional localization of P4-ATPases and membrane organization.

RESUMEN

The MCL1 gene is frequently amplified in cancer and codes for the antiapoptotic protein myeloid cell leukemia 1 (MCL1), which confers resistance to the current standard of care. Therefore, MCL1 is an attractive anticancer target. Here we describe BRD-810 as a potent and selective MCL1 inhibitor and its key design principle of rapid systemic clearance to potentially minimize area under the curve-driven toxicities associated with MCL1 inhibition. BRD-810 induced rapid cell killing within 4 h in vitro but, in the same 4-h window, had no impact on cell viability or troponin I release in human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes, even at suprapharmacologic concentrations. In vivo BRD-810 induced efficacy in xenograft hematological and solid tumor models despite the short residence time of BRD-810 in plasma. In totality, our data support the hypothesis that short-term inhibition of MCL1 with BRD-810 can induce apoptosis in tumor cells while maintaining an acceptable safety profile. We, therefore, intend to advance BRD-810 to clinical trials.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: A single treatment planning system (TPS) model for matched linacs provides flexible clinical workflows from patient treatment to intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) quality assurance (QA) measurement. Since general guidelines for building a single TPS model and its validation for matched linacs are not well established, we present our RayStation photon TPS modeling strategy for matched Elekta VersaHD linacs. METHOD: The four linacs installed from 2013 to 2020 were matched in terms of Percent Depth Dose (PDD), profile, output factor and wedge factors for 6-MV, 10-MV, 15-MV, and 6-MV-FFF, and maintained following TG-142 recommendations until RayStation commissioning. The RayStation single model was built to represent all four linacs within the tolerance limits recommended by MPPG-5.a. The comprehensive validation tests were performed for one linac following MPPG-5.a and TG-119 guidelines, and spot checks for the other three. Our TPS modeling/validation method was evaluated by re-analyzing the previous 103 patient-specific IMRT/volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) QA measurements with the calculated planar doses by the single model in comparison with the analysis results using four individual Pinnacle TPS models. RESULTS: For all energies, our single model PDDs were within 1% agreement of the four-linac commissioning measurements. The MPPG-5.a validation tests from 5.1 through 7.5 and all TG-119 measurements passed within the recommended tolerance limits. The IMRT QA results (mean ± standard deviation) for RayStation single model versus Pinnacle individual models were 98.9% ± 1.3% and 98.0% ± 1.4% for 6-MV, 99.9% ± 0.1% and 99.1% ± 1.9% for 10-MV, and 98.2% ± 1.3% and 97.9% ± 1.8% for 6-MV-FFF, respectively. CONCLUSION: We successfully built and validated a single photon beam model in RayStation for four Elekta Linacs. The proposed new validation methods were proven to be both efficient and effective.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Data regarding retrograde open mesenteric stenting (ROMS) for urgent mesenteric ischemia is limited to small single center and case series, with variable utilization across patient populations and ill-defined outcomes. We aimed to evaluate characteristics and outcomes of patients with acute mesenteric ischemia requiring urgent surgical intervention. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of patients with mesenteric ischemia requiring urgent surgical intervention from 2018 to 2020 was queried from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database. Study groups were defined as those requiring an open bypass (BYPASS), an open superior mesenteric artery embolectomy (OPEN), or ROMS. Descriptive statistics were used to report variables. Comparisons were mad using t test, chi-squares tests, and multivariate regression reported as odds ratio (OR), 95% confidence interval (CI) where appropriate. RESULTS: 898 patients with mesenteric ischemia requiring urgent surgical intervention were included: Bypass: 284, OPEN: 363, ROMS: 251. There was no difference in gender or race between groups. Patients requiring ROMS were more likely to be older 70.2 + 11.3versus Bypass 66.81 + 11.6 and OPEN 67.17 + 14.5, p = 0.0035. ROMS patients had the highest Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) 2.9 versus 2.5 Bypass and 2.6 OPEN, p = 0.0292 with the most frequent comorbidities: Diabetes 37% (p = 0.01), renal disease 24.3% (p = 0.5), and previous preoperative myocardial infarction 9.2%, p = 0.05; however, the lowest mortality rate was seen within this Group 15.9% versus bypass 19.7%, OPEN 34.5%, p < 0.0001. Patients requiring bypass were more likely to have chronic pulmonary disease 34.5% versus OPEN 24.2% and ROMS 31.5%, p = 0.013, peripheral vascular disease (PVD) 38% versus OPEN 16%, and ROMS 29.9%, p < 0.0001. On multivariate regression, ROMS was associated with 50% decreased incidence of mortality (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.27-0.75). Open SMA embolectomy was associated with nearly 2x mortality rate compared to bypass procedures OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.3-3.0, p < 0.001. Previous MI was also associated with nearly 2x incidence of mortality (OR 1.9, 95% CI 1.01-3.6), while pre-existing PVD conferred a protective effect (OR 0.56, 95% CI 0.36-0.89). Higher CCI and age were associated with slightly increased risk for mortality OR 1.2 and 1.03, p < 0.05 for both. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with acute mesenteric ischemia, ROMS demonstrated a significant mortality benefit compared to traditional open procedures. Advanced age, history of MI, and open SMA embolectomy were associated with increased mortality. Little data exists regarding ROMS in a real-world population evaluating ROMS, which is a newer technique. These data suggest that ROMS may be a superior alternative to restore mesenteric flow in the acute setting and further prospective studies evaluating ROMS to other procedural types in urgent and elective settings are needed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Patency for chronic total occlusions (CTO) of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) after endovascular interventions traditionally demonstrate a low 1-year patency ranging from 40%-60%. The optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheter (Avinger Inc., Redwood City, CA) uses light-based technology imaging to cross Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus D (TASC D) lesions intraluminally with direct intra-arterial visualization. Insufficient data exist evaluating intraluminal crossing with OCT imaging compared with traditional subintimal techniques. We evaluated outcomes for TASC D lesions crossed intraluminally. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients with SFA TASC D lesions crossed intra-arterially with the OCT catheter imaging. Descriptive statistics evaluated patient characteristics which included patient demographics, Rutherford scores, ABIs, CTA information, lesion categorization, as well as runoff score. Patency at baseline, 30-day, 6-month, and 1-year outcomes were compared using t-tests. Cumulative patency rates were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier analysis. RESULTS: 101 patients underwent elective intervention for SFA TASC D lesions with the OCT catheter. The crossing rate was 78.2%, mean lesion length was 16.2 cm, and runoff at the tibial level was 2.2 patent vessels. Mean age and BMI were 64 years and 29 kg/m2, respectively. Patient characteristics are male (57%); Caucasian (90%); ever smoking (85%); hypertension (82%), hyperlipidemia (70%), and diabetes (46%). Pre-operative computed tomography demonstrated SFA lesions were predominantly eccentric (91%) with mild to moderate calcification (90%). All underwent PTA, 87% were stented (mean stent length: 186.1 mm), mean crossing time was 13.4 min. Pre-operative, 30-day, 6-month, and 1-year post-operative mean Rutherford-Becker scores were 4, 1, 1, and 1, respectively (p < 0.0001). Mean pre-operative ABI was 0.49, compared to 0.84 at 30 days, 0.64 at 6 months, and 0.67 at 1 year (p < .0001). Duplex demonstrated 6- and 12-month primary patency of 89% and 75%; primary-assisted patency was 94% and 84%. CONCLUSIONS: The OCT imaging catheter successfully crossed long chronic total occlusions of the SFA using direct intra-arterial imaging. Compared to subintimal techniques, patients had high 1-year primary patency and prolonged symptom improvement with intraluminal crossing. These data suggest that intraluminal crossing of TASC D lesions may be superior to traditional subintimal crossing techniques.

RESUMEN

Traumatic brain injury (TBI), a significant global health issue, is affecting ∼69 million annually. To better understand TBI's impact on brain function and assess the efficacy of treatments, this study uses a novel temporal-spatial cross-group approach with a porcine model, integrating resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) for temporal and arterial spin labeling for spatial information. Our research used 18 four-week-old pigs divided into three groups: TBI treated with saline (SLN, n = 6), TBI treated with fecal microbial transplant (FMT, n = 6), and a sham group (sham, n = 6) with only craniectomy surgery as the baseline. By applying machine learning techniques-specifically, independent component analysis and sparse dictionary learning-across seven identified resting-state networks, we assessed the temporal and spatial correlations indicative of treatment efficacy. Both temporal and spatial analyses revealed a consistent increase of correlation between the FMT and sham groups in the executive control and salience networks. Our results are further evidenced by a simulation study designed to mimic the progression of TBI severity through the introduction of variable Gaussian noise to an independent rs-fMRI dataset. The results demonstrate a decreasing temporal correlation between the sham and TBI groups with increasing injury severity, consistent with the experimental results. This study underscores the effectiveness of the methodology in evaluating post-TBI treatments such as the FMT. By presenting comprehensive experimental and simulated data, our research contributes significantly to the field and opens new paths for future investigations into TBI treatment evaluations.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of topical naltrexone on wound healing in freshwater fish. ANIMALS: 25 blackbelt cichlids (Vieja maculicauda). METHODS: A randomized, controlled, experimental trial was performed, with each individual serving as its own control. Bilateral 6-mm periepaxial cutaneous wounds were created in the body-wall skin of each fish under anesthesia. Three treatment groups were as follows: topical 0.04% naltrexone in administration vehicle (iLEX ointment; iLEX Health Products) at day 0 only (n = 10), topical 0.04% naltrexone in iLEX every 72 to 96 hours (n = 10), or iLEX only every 72 to 96 hours (n = 5) for 10 total treatments. The contralateral wound was left untreated as a control. Fish were maintained in a common enclosure at 24.7 to 25.4 °C for 35 days. Macroscopic wound assessment and image collection were performed every 72 to 96 hours. On day 35, fish were humanely euthanized, and skin samples were collected for histopathology. RESULTS: Time to complete visual resolution of wound healing was faster (P = .002) in wounds treated every 72 to 96 hours with topical 0.04% naltrexone in iLEX (day 19.4) compared to untreated wounds (day 23.3). An interaction between treatment and day was observed (P = .002), with fish treated with 0.04% naltrexone in iLEX every 72 to 96 hours having reduced (P < .05) wound area compared to both controls and fish treated with topical 0.04% naltrexone in iLEX once. No significant differences were noted in histologic sections of wound sites examined at day 35. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Fish improved earlier postsurgery and time to complete wound resolution was faster in wounds treated with topical 0.04% naltrexone in iLEX every 72 to 96 hours.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate residual debris within internal features of new 'as received' dental implants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 15 new dental implants representing various dental implant brands were obtained in sealed containers from the manufacturers. Batch numbers and implant types were documented. In a controlled setting, implants were carefully unpacked, and their internal aspects were visually examined. Further analysis involved light microscopy imaging to document and photograph any foreign material. The internal aspect of the implants were sampled with both an endodontic paper cone and a fine bristle brush swab. These were inserted into the implant, rotated three times, then removed and examined under a microscope at 30x magnification. Post sampling some of the brushes/swabs were washed with alcohol to remove debris that could be further examined under magnification. RESULTS: Inspection of the implants without magnification revealed no visible foreign materials. However, under light microscopy (x10 and x30), all 15 implants exhibited small black particles at various internal sites, including connections, threads, and deep within screw channels. Swabs evaluated at magnification detected what appeared to be metal particles in all 15 implants, ranging from distinct metal shards to smaller particles. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that implant manufacturers have not effectively removed all machining debris from within implant bodies, potentially producing prosthetic and clinical complications.

RESUMEN

Background: Most healthcare providers utilize magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assist in diagnosing and treating osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the capitellum. However, consensus on imaging features that portend clinically relevant information in the care of these lesions has not been determined. Purpose: To conduct a survey on the MRI features of a capitellar OCD that are salient for clinical decision-making using a classic Delphi protocol. Study Design: A consensus statement. Methods: Invitations to participate were sent to 33 healthcare providers identified as capitellar OCD experts. A classic 3-round survey method was used to gather agreement and consensus on the level of importance for clinical decision-making on 33 MRI features. A concise list of features that guide decision-making on the stability of an OCD lesion and the ability of an OCD lesion to heal with nonoperative care was also identified. Agreement and consensus were determined a priori as ≥66%. Results: Of the 33 identified experts, 20 agreed to participate, and 17 (52%) completed all 3 rounds. Of the 33 MRI features evaluated, 17 reached agreement as important for clinical decision-making by the experts. Consensus was reached for a concise list of MRI features that were significant to decision-making (94%), suggestive of a stable lesion (100%), had the potential to heal with nonoperative treatment (94%), were suggestive of an unstable lesion (100%), and had low potential to heal with nonoperative treatment (88%). Conclusion: This 3-round Delphi process produced consensus on clinically relevant MRI features that contribute to clinical decision-making for capitellar OCD. The results of this study will be used as the basis for an interrater reliability assessment of the identified salient features, creating the foundation for developing a reliable MRI assessment tool rooted in clinical experiences. The development of a standardized assessment of capitellar OCD is intended to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes.

By analyzing 15,000 samples from 348 mammalian species, we derive DNA methylation (DNAm) predictors of maximum life span (R = 0.89), gestation time (R = 0.96), and age at sexual maturity (R = 0.85). Our maximum life-span predictor indicates a potential innate longevity advantage for females over males in 17 mammalian species including humans. The DNAm maximum life-span predictions are not affected by caloric restriction or partial reprogramming. Genetic disruptions in the somatotropic axis such as growth hormone receptors have an impact on DNAm maximum life span only in select tissues. Cancer mortality rates show no correlation with our epigenetic estimates of life-history traits. The DNAm maximum life-span predictor does not detect variation in life span between individuals of the same species, such as between the breeds of dogs. Maximum life span is determined in part by an epigenetic signature that is an intrinsic species property and is distinct from the signatures that relate to individual mortality risk.

RESUMEN

There is growing concern about the potential adverse health effects of phthalates (PAEs) on human health and the environment due to their extensive use as plasticizers and additives in commercial and consumer products. In this study, we assessed PAE concentrations in serum samples from aquarium-based delphinids (Tursiops truncatus, n = 36; Orcinus orca, n = 42) from California, Florida, and Texas, USA. To better understand the physiological effects of phthalates on delphinids, we also explored potential correlations between phthalates and the biomarkers aldosterone, cortisol, corticosterone, hydrogen peroxide, and malondialdehyde while accounting for sex, age, and reproductive stage. All PAEs were detected in at least one of the individuals. ΣPAE ranges were 5.995-2743 ng·mL-1 in bottlenose dolphins and 5.372-88,675 ng·mL-1 in killer whales. Both species displayed higher mean concentrations of DEP and DEHP. PAEs were detected in newborn delphinids, indicating transference via placenta and/or lactation. Linear mixed model results indicated significant correlations between aldosterone, month, location, status, and ΣPAEs in killer whales, suggesting that aldosterone concentrations are likely affected by the cumulative effects of these variables. This study expands on the knowledge of delphinid physiological responses to PAEs and may influence management and conservation decisions on contamination discharge regulations near these species.
