Three new species of Polycarpaea from Vietnam, Polycarpaea vanphongensis V.T. Tran, H.T. Truong & N.V. Binh, Polycarpaea chungana V.T. Tran, H.T. Truong & N.V. Binh, Polycarpaea phuquocensis V.T. Tran, H.T. Truong & N.V. Binh are described and illustrated based on evidence of molecular sequence data from two markers (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 and rps16) and combined morphological characteristics. Polycarpaea vanphongensis is closely related to Polycarpaea gaudichaudi Gagnep., Polycarpaea arenaria (Lour.) Gagnep., Polycarpaea phuquocensis V.T. Tran, H.T. Truong & N.V. Binh but differs by its stem glabrous, leaf ovate to elliptic, glabrous, ovary oblong ovoid, base obtuse, apex attenuate, capsule oblong void, 3.8 mm long. Polycarpaea phuquocensis V.T. Tran, H.T. Truong & N.V. Binh differs from the three species mentioned above by its stem being densely villous, leaf spathulate, ciliate, ovary ovoid, base acute, apex obtuse, capsule ovoid, 1.2 mm long. Polycarpaea chungana V.T. Tran, H.T. Truong & N.V. Binh is most similar to Polycarpaea lignosa Gagnep., but differs in having leaf oblong or linear, sparse ciliate, sepal and petal apex deeply concaved or slightly bifid, ovary ovoid, ovoid, 0.8-1.0 mm long. Furthermore, the achievements of analysis using molecular data on the systematic positions of 7 other species are results that have not been in previous molecular analyses.

Although several observational studies have reported a link between the use of underarm cosmetic products and the risk of breast cancer, the findings remain inconsistent. This study aimed to investigate these associations using a meta-analysis of observational studies. In the meta-analysis of seven case-control studies, we found no association between the use of underarm antiperspirants or deodorants and the risk of breast cancer (OR = 0.96, 95%CI 0.78-1.17; I2 = 60.0%). Further prospective cohort studies that provide a higher level of evidence are warranted to confirm our findings.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized in an aqueous solution via the reduction of AgNO3 employing citrate reducing agent. The resultant AgNPs were first assayed for the catalytic H2 evolution in an acidic electrolyte, namely pH 0.3 H2SO4 solution, showing negligible activity. The AgNPs were then conditioned in the same electrolyte solution while repeating the cyclic potential polarization between -0.25 V and 0.95 V (or 1.8 V) versus RHE. Effects of the electrochemical treatment to the morphology, crystalline, surface chemistry and H2 evolution catalytic activity of AgNPs were examined. It was found that the electrochemical treatment remarkably boosted the H2 evolution catalytic activity of AgNPs. The electrochemically activated AgNPs represents an attractive Pt-free catalyst for the H2 evolution in acidic medium.

Heart tumors are sporadic. Secondary heart tumors are 30 times more common than primary ones. Depending on the location and origin of the tumor, clinical pictures vary from asymptomatic to severe manifestations such as arrhythmia, heart failure, pericardial effusion, and cardiogenic shock. We report hereby a rare case who presented with faint clinical symptoms, rapidly progressing to right heart failure within a month. Echocardiography and computed tomography of the chest revealed a tumor in the right heart chamber of 72.0 × 43.0 mm, in addition to large mediastinal lymph and left supraclavicular lymph nodes, cardiogenic shock appeared 4 days after admission. Through examination, it was suspected that this was a cardiac lymphoma. The patient was treated with 2 mg methylprednisolone per kg body weight. Symptoms of cardiogenic shock improved significantly and disappeared after 6 hours of treatment. After supraclavicular lymph node biopsy and immunohistochemistry, the final result was diagnosed as diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma with large lymphoma in the right heart. The patient received chemotherapy with the R-CHOP regimen (Rituximab, Cyclophosphamide, Doxorubicin, Vincristine, and Prednisolone). Re-examination before the 5th chemotherapy cycle showed no signs of right heart failure, normal self-activity, and no dyspnea on exertion, and the tumor size in the heart on the echocardiogram was 23.8 × 19.1 mm. The report shows that a large right heart tumor with a clinical picture of cardiogenic shock in a patient with diffuse large B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was well-responded to initial treatment with methylprednisolone at a dose of 2 mg/kg body weight and R-CHOP chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND: A specific type of prostate cancer (PC) that exhibits neuroendocrine (NE) differentiation is known as NEPC. NEPC has little to no response to androgen deprivation therapy and is associated with the development of metastatic castration-resistant PC (CRPC), which has an extremely poor prognosis. Our understanding of genetic drivers and activated pathways in NEPC is limited, which hinders precision medicine approaches. L1 cell adhesion molecule (L1CAM) is known to play an oncogenic role in metastatic cancers, including CRPC. However, the impact of L1CAM on NEPC progression remains elusive. METHODS: L1CAM expression level was investigated using public gene expression databases of PC cohorts and patient-derived xenograft models. L1CAM knockdown was performed in different PC cells to study in vitro cell functions. A subline of CRPC cell line CWR22Rv1 was established after long-term exposure to abiraterone to induce NE differentiation. The androgen receptor-negative cell line PC3 was cultured under the tumor sphere-forming condition to enrich cancer stemness features. Several oxidative stress inducers were tested on PC cells to observe L1CAM-mediated gene expression and cell death. RESULTS: L1CAM expression was remarkably high in NEPC compared to CRPC or adenocarcinoma tumors. L1CAM was also correlated with NE marker expressions and associated with the adenocarcinoma-to-NEPC progression in gene expression databases and CRPC cells with NE differentiation. L1CAM also promoted cancer stemness and NE phenotypes in PC3 cells under cancer stemness enrichment. L1CAM was also identified as a reactive oxygen species-induced gene, by which L1CAM counteracted CRPC cell death triggered by ionizing radiation. CONCLUSIONS: Our results unveiled a new role of L1CAM in the acquisition of the NE phenotype in PC, contributing to the NE differentiation-related therapeutic resistance of CRPC.

There are no tools to identify driver nodes of large-scale networks in approach of competition-based controllability. This study proposed a novel method for this computation of large-scale networks. It implemented the method in a new Cytoscape plug-in app called Drivergene.net. Experiments of the software on large-scale biomolecular networks have shown outstanding speed and computing power. Interestingly, 86.67% of the top 10 driver nodes found on these networks are anticancer drug target genes that reside mostly at the innermost K-cores of the networks. Finally, compared method with those of five other researchers and confirmed that the proposed method outperforms the other methods on identification of anticancer drug target genes. Taken together, Drivergene.net is a reliable tool that efficiently detects not only drug target genes from biomolecular networks but also driver nodes of large-scale complex networks. PURPOSE: Critical care pharmacists (CCPs) are essential members of the multidisciplinary critical care team. Professional activities of the CCP are outlined in a 2020 position paper on critical care pharmacy services. This study looks to characterize CCP perspectives for priorities in optimizing pharmacy practice models and professional activities. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey conducted from July 24 to September 20, 2023. A 41-question survey instrument was developed to assess 7 domains: demographics, CCP resource utilization, patient care, quality improvement, research and scholarship, training and education, and professional development. This voluntary survey was sent to members of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy's Critical Care Practice and Research Network. The survey was open for a total of 6 weeks. RESULTS: There was a response rate of 20.7% (332 of 1,605 invitees), with 66.6% of respondents (n = 221) completing at least 90% of the survey questions. Most respondents were clinical specialists (58.2%) and/or practiced at an academic medical center (58.5%). Direct patient care, quality improvement and medication safety, and teaching and precepting were identified as the CCP activities of highest importance to CCPs. The CCP-to-patient ratios considered ideal were 1:11-15 (selected by 49.8% of respondents) and 1:16-20 (33.9% of respondents). The ideal percentage of time dedicated to direct patient care activities, as identified by survey respondents, was 50% (interquartile range, 40-50). CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the professional activities viewed as having the highest priority by CCPs. Future research is needed to define optimal CCP practice models for the delivery of patient care in real-world settings.

Purpose: Glial fibrillary acidic protein serves as a biomarker indicative of astroglial injury, particularly following instances of severe traumatic brain injury. This study aims to evaluate variations in serum glial fibrillary acidic protein levels within the first 3 days and their correlation with outcomes in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. Subjects and methods: Thirty-nine patients with severe traumatic brain injury were enrolled in the study. Their blood samples were collected at six distinct time points: T0 (upon admission), T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 (6-, 12-, 24-, 48-, and 72-h post-admission, respectively). The blood samples were run for the quantification of serum glial fibrillary acidic protein levels and other biochemical tests. All patients were closely watched and the outcomes at discharge were evaluated. Results: Glial fibrillary acidic protein levels tend to increase gradually from the time of admission to 48 h post-admission and then decrease at 72 h post-admission. Glial fibrillary acidic protein T2 is correlated with Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, lactate, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II score and outcome. Glial fibrillary acidic protein max correlated with lactate, Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score, Simplified Acute Physiology Score II score, and outcome. Glasgow Coma Score at admission and glial fibrillary acidic protein T2 (OR = 1.034; p = 0.025), T3 (OR = 1.029; p = 0.046), T4 (OR = 1.006; p = 0.032), T5 (OR = 1.012; p = 0.048) and glial fibrillary acidic protein max (OR = 1.005; p = 0.010) were independent factors that have significant prognostic value in mortality in patients with severe traumatic brain injury. The predictive model in predicting mortality had the highest area under the curve based on glial fibrillary acidic protein T2 and Glasgow Coma Score T0 with an area under the curve of 0.904 and p < 0.001. In the multivariable regression model, glial fibrillary acidic protein max was associated with Glasgow score (p < 0.001; VIF = 1.585), lactate T0 (p = 0.024; VIF = 1.163), Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score (p = 0.037; VIF = 1.360), and Rotterdam score (p = 0.044; VIF = 1.713). Conclusion: Glial fibrillary acidic protein levels tend to increase gradually from the time of admission to 48 h post-admission then decreases at 72 h post-admission. Glial fibrillary acidic protein T2, T3, T4, T5, and glial fibrillary acidic protein max were independent factors with significant prognostic mortality values in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.

Contaminated drinking water from widespread environmental pollutants such as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) poses a rising threat to public health. PFAS monitoring in groundwater is limited and fails to consider pesticides found to contain PFAS as a potential contamination source. Given previous findings on the disproportionate exposure of communities of Color to both pesticides and PFAS, we investigated disparities in PFAS-contaminated pesticide applications in California based on community-level sociodemographic characteristics. We utilized statewide pesticide application data from the California Department of Pesticide Regulation and recently reported concentrations of PFAS chemicals detected in eight pesticide products to calculate the areal density of PFAS applied within 1 km of individual community water systems' (CWSs) supply wells. Spatial regression analyses suggest that statewide, CWSs that serve a greater proportion of Latinx and non-Latinx People of Color residents experience a greater areal density of PFAS applied and greater likelihood of PFAS application near their public supply wells. These results highlight agroecosystems as potentially important sources of PFAS in drinking water and identify areas that may be at risk of PFAS contamination and warrant additional PFAS monitoring and remediation.

This study is focused on investigating the chemical composition and bioactive properties of the essential oil extracted from Psychotria asiatica L., a plant species known for its medicinal properties. Utilising gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, the essential oil from P. asiatica was found to contain 53 distinct constituents. Major compounds identified include (E)-citral (20.6%), 10-epi-γ-eudesmol (15.9%), (Z)-citral (10.5%), geraniol (7.4%), α-cadinol (6.7%), 7-epi-α-eudesmol (4.4%), linalool (3.7%), and α-muurolol (3.4%). The essential oil did not exhibit antioxidant activity, as indicated by an IC50 value of > 100 µg/mL, whereas the positive control L-Ascorbic acid had an IC50 of 7.37 ± 0.27 µg/mL in the DPPH model. Assessment of its anti-inflammatory potential revealed an inhibitory effect on NO production, with an IC50 value of 29.08 ± 1.54 µg/mL in Lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW264.7 macrophage cells. Furthermore, the essential oil demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against the SK-LU-1 cancer cell line, with an IC50 value of 39.75 ± 1.79 µg/mL according to the sulforhodamine B (SRB) assay.

Exploring structural biomimicry is a great opportunity to replicate hierarchical frameworks inspired by nature in advanced functional materials for boosting new applications. In this work, we present the biomimetic integration of polythiophene into chitosan nanofibrils in a twisted Bouligand structure to afford free-standing macroscopic composite membranes with electrochemical functionality. By considering the integrity of the Bouligand structure in crab shells, we can produce large, free-standing chitosan nanofibril membranes with iridescent colors and flexible toughness. These unique structured features lead the chitosan membranes to host functional additives to mimic hierarchically layered composites. We used the iridescent chitosan nanofibrils as a photonic platform to investigate the host-guest combination between thiophene and chitosan through oxidative polymerization to fabricate homogeneous polythiophene-wrapped chitosan composites. This biomimetic incorporation fully retains the twisted Bouligand organization of nanofibrils in the polymerized assemblies, thus giving rise to free-standing macroscopic electrochemical membranes. Our further experiments are the modification of the biomimetic polythiophene-wrapped chitosan composites on a glassy carbon electrode to design a three-electrode system for simultaneous electrochemical detection of uric acid, xanthine, hypoxanthine, and caffeine at trace concentrations.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have captured the imagination of researchers for their highly tunable properties and many potential applications, including as catalysts for a variety of transformations. Even though MOFs possess significant potential, the challenges associated with processing of these crystalline powders into usable form factors while retaining their functional properties limit their end use applications. Herein, we introduce a new approach to construct MOF-polymer composites via 3D photoprinting to overcome these limitations. We designed photoresin composite formulations that use polymerization-induced phase separation to cause the MOF catalysts to migrate to the surface of the printed material, where they are accessible to substrates such as chemical warfare agents. Using our approach, MOF-polymer composites can be fabricated into nearly any shape or architecture while retaining both the excellent catalytic activity at 10 wt % loading of the MOF components and the flexible, elastomeric mechanical properties of a polymer.

INTRODUCTION: Coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) plays a major role in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) physiopathology but its assessment in clinical practice remains a challenge. Nowadays, innovations in invasive and noninvasive coronary evaluation using multimodal imaging provide options for the diagnosis of CMD. The objective of the present study was to investigate if new multimodal imaging diagnosis of CMD could detect HCM patients with more impaired cardiac function by left atrioventricular coupling index (LACI). METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 32 consecutive patients with a confirmed diagnosis of HCM (62 ± 13 years, 62% men) were prospectively screened for CMD using a multimodal imaging method. LACI was assessed by cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging. Fifteen (47%) patients had CMD by multimodal imaging method. Patients with CMD presented a significantly higher LACI (48.5 ± 25.4 vs. 32.5 ± 10.6, p = .03). A multivariate logistic regression analysis demonstrated that CMD was independently associated with LACI (OR = 1.069, 95% CI 1.00-1.135, p = .03). CONCLUSION: Multimodal imaging diagnosis of CMD is applicable to HCM patients and is associated with more impaired cardiac function.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between the glycation gap (GG) and renal complications such as urinary albumin-creatinine ratio (UACR) and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 104 individuals (52 males and 52 females), aged 36-93 years old. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), HbA1c, and serum fructosamine were measured simultaneously. GG was calculated as the difference between the measured and fructosamine-based predicted HbA1c levels (FHbA1c). Results: There was a moderately positive correlation between HbA1c and fructosamine concentration (r = 0.488; p < 0.001). GG was positively correlated with UACR (r = 0.3275; p = 0.0007), negatively correlated with eGFR (r = -0.3400; p = 0.0004). HbA1c was positively correlated with UACR (r = 0.2437; p = 0.0127) but not correlated with eGFR (r = -0.444; p = 0.6542). Fructosamine has a positive correlation with eGFR (r = 0.2426; p = 0.0131) but not with UACR (r = -0.1021; p = 0.3025). Conclusion: GG was positively correlated with UACR and inversely correlated with eGFR in type 2 Diabetes mellitus patients. This suggests that GG is a valuable index for predicting kidney complications due to diabetes.

The potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) is an obligate root pathogen of potatoes. G. rostochiensis encodes several highly expanded effector gene families, including the Gr4D06 family; however, little is known about the function of this effector family. We cloned four 29D09 genes from G. rostochiensis (named Gr29D09v1/v2/v3/v4) that share high sequence similarity and are homologous to the Hg29D09 and Hg4D06 effector genes from the soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that Gr29D09 genes belong to a subgroup of the Gr4D06 family. We showed that Gr29D09 genes are expressed exclusively within the nematode's dorsal gland cell and are dramatically upregulated in parasitic stages, indicating involvement of Gr29D09 effectors in nematode parasitism. Transgenic potato lines overexpressing Gr29D09 variants showed increased susceptibility to G. rostochiensis. Transient expression assays in Nicotiana benthamiana demonstrated that Gr29D09v3 could suppress reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and defense gene expression induced by flg22 and cell death mediated by immune receptors. These results suggest a critical role of Gr29D09 effectors in defense suppression. The use of affinity purification coupled with nanoliquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry identified potato hexokinase 1 (StHXK1) as a candidate target of Gr29D09. The Gr29D09-StHXK1 interaction was further confirmed using in planta protein-protein interaction assays. Plant HXKs have been implicated in defense regulation against pathogen infection. Interestingly, we found that StHXK1 could enhance flg22-induced ROS production, consistent with a positive role of plant HXKs in defense. Altogether, our results suggest that targeting StHXK1 by Gr29D09 effectors may impair the positive function of StHXK1 in plant immunity, thereby aiding nematode parasitism. Although proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are widely used in the treatment of various acid-related disorders, observational studies have raised concern about an association between PPI use and the risk of gastrointestinal cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the association between them using a meta-analysis of cohort studies. PubMed and Excerpta Medica dataBASE were searched from inception to December 2022 to identify relevant cohort studies. The primary outcome was the risk of gastrointestinal cancer among PPI users, expressed as a pooled odds ratio (OR), relative risk (RR) or hazard ratio (HR) and its 95% CI based on a random-effects model. A total of 25 cohort studies from 23 articles were included in the final analysis. In the meta-analysis of all studies, an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer following the use of PPIs was observed (OR/RR/HR, 2.09; 95% CI, 1.78-2.46). Subgroup analyses by type of cancer also revealed an association between PPI use and the risk of esophageal, gastric, liver and pancreatic cancer, whereas there was no association for colorectal cancer. The increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer was also observed in individuals who had used PPIs for <1 year (OR/RR/HR, 5.23; 95% CI, 2.96-9.24) as well as individuals who had used PPIs for up to 3 years. The present meta-analysis revealed that the use of PPIs was associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal cancer.

Introduction: As sufficient nutrition helps alleviate catabolic stress and modulate the systemic inflammatory response of the body, it plays an indispensable role in the good prognosis of critically ill patients. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the malnutrition of patients with severe COVID-19 and its association with adverse treatment outcomes. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study in two provincial hospitals in Hanoi from February to April 2022. Participants were patients with severe COVID-19 admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Malnutrition risk were evaluated by Nutritional Risk Screening-2002 (NRS), Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM), Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), and the adverse prognosis was assessed by Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II). The multivariate receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to estimate the predictive ability of those criteria regarding worse treatment results. Results: The percentages of malnutrition measured by NRS, GLIM, PNI, and BMI were 62.6, 51.5, 42.9, and 16.6%, respectively. Patients with more severe malnutrition assessed by GLIM, PNI, and having above target fasting blood glucose (FBG) (≥10.0 mmol/L) were more likely to have higher APACHE scores. PNI had a better diagnostic performance than NRS and BMI (AUC = 0.84, 0.81, and 0.82, respectively). In addition, FBG revealed a good prognostic implication (AUC = 0.84). Conclusion: A relatively high percentage of patients experienced moderate and severe malnutrition regardless of screening tools. Individuals at higher risk of malnutrition and high FBG were predicted to have more adverse treatment outcomes. It is recommended that nutritional screening should be conducted regularly, and personalizing nutritional care strategies is necessary to meet patients' nutrient demands and prevent other nutrition-related complications.

Introduction: Metacognition plays an essential role in competency-based medical education. Metacognitive skills consist of knowledge and regulation metacognition. This study was conducted to investigate the metacognition of undergraduate students and its correlation with students' academic performance. Methods: The metacognitive skills inventory comprised 52 binary-scale items administered to 202 Vietnam Military Medical University medical students. The entire semester and clinical results were used to measure their academic performance. Results: Medical students' total metacognitive awareness score was high (median 0.8). The median metacognitive knowledge score was significantly lower than the metacognitive regulation score (0.7 vs 0.8, respectively). The participants with a total metacognition score ≥0.8 had significantly higher academic results (full semester exam results of 7.4 and clinical exam of 7.5). The group of participants in the military, having sports habits and usually searching academic documents in English, had a higher proportion of total metacognitive awareness score ≥0.8 than the group without these above characteristics (with the percentages of 53.3%, 59%, and 64.3%, respectively; p < 0.05). The number of books read by participants with a total metacognitive awareness score ≥ 0.8 was significantly higher than those with a total metacognitive awareness score <0.8 (3.5 compared to 2.4 books). Conclusion: Metacognitive awareness of Vietnam Military Medical University medical students was likely to be high. A high score of metacognitive awareness could predict high academic performance. Being a military student, playing sports, reading books, and searching English documents were predictors of better metacognitive awareness.

INTRODUCTION: Pedicle screw loosening is a significant complication of posterior spinal fixation, particularly among osteoporotic patients and in deformity constructs. In orthopedic trauma surgery, locking plates and screws have revolutionized the fixation of osteoporotic fractures. We have combined the traumatology principle of fixed-angle locking plate fixation with the spine principles of segmental instrumentation. METHODS: A novel spinolaminar locking plate was designed based on morphometric studies of human thoracolumbar vertebrae. The plates were fixed to cadaveric human lumbar spines and connected to form 1-level L1-L2 or L4-L5 constructs and compared to similar pedicle screw constructs. Pure moment testing was performed to assess range of motion before and after 30,000 cycles of cyclic fatigue. Post-fatigue fixture pullout strength was assessed by applying a continuous axial tensile force oriented to the principal axis of the pedicle until pullout was observed. RESULTS: Spinolaminar plate fixation resulted in superior pullout strength compared to pedicle screws (1,065 ± 400N vs. 714 ± 284N, p = 0.028). Spinolaminar plates performed equivalently to pedicle screws in range of motion reduction during flexion/extension and axial rotation. Pedicle screws outperformed the spinolaminar plates in lateral bending. Finally, no spinolaminar constructs failed during cyclic fatigue testing, whereas one pedicle screw construct did. CONCLUSIONS: The spinolaminar locking plate maintained adequate fixation post-fatigue, particularly in flexion/extension and axial rotation compared to pedicle screws. Moreover, spinolaminar plates were superior to pedicle screw fixation with respect to cyclic fatiguing and pullout strength. The spinolaminar plates offer a viable option for posterior lumbar instrumentation in the adult spine.

In a United Nations (UN) staff member headquarters in South Sudan, we present a rare typhoid fever complicated by syncope due to relative bradycardia. A 25-year-old male presented to our hospital with a high fever, diarrhea, and no vomiting. He had no substantial medical background. He was diagnosed with an unspecified digestive disorder and received initial treatment. Two syncope episodes were recorded in the Level 1 hospital. He was referred to our hospital at the 30th hour and the third fainting occurred. Electrocardiogram showed bradycardia with a heart rate of 40 beats/min. The atropine test was negative; the initial diagnosis was sinus sickness syndrome. Microbiology tests later suggested typhoid infection. Then, the diagnosis changed to relative bradycardia caused by Salmonella typhi; and he was orally treated with the third-generation Quinolone antibiotic. He significantly improved and got discharged on the seventh day. In conclusion, typhoid remains a real and present threat to UN staff and civilians in South Sudan.
