RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Whether preexisting sarcopenia is an independent risk factor for postoperative pneumonia (POP) for patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a propensity score-matched population-based cohort study to compare the risk of acute and late POP for patients with sarcopenic and nonsarcopenic OCSCC who underwent curative surgery. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included patients with OCSCC who underwent curative surgery and categorized them into 2 groups depending on whether they had preexisting sarcopenia. The patients in the sarcopenic and nonsarcopenic groups were matched at a ratio of 2:1. RESULTS: The matching process yielded 16,257 patients (10,822 without sarcopenia and 5,435 with sarcopenia). In multivariate Cox regression analyses, the adjusted hazard ratio of POP for the group with OCSCC with preexisting sarcopenia was 1.20 (95% CI, 1.14-1.26; P<.0001) compared with the nonsarcopenic group. Among the patients with OCSCC who received curative surgery, those in the sarcopenic group exhibited a higher POP risk than those in the nonsarcopenic group for the following postoperative time periods: 31st to 90th day, 91st day to first year, first to second year, second to third year, third to fourth year, and fourth to fifth year. CONCLUSIONS: The high incidence of pneumonia persists for a long time in patients with OCSCC who receive curative surgery; this high incidence may even persist for 5 years after surgery, especially in patients with sarcopenia. For susceptible patients who are at risk for OCSCC, sarcopenia prevention measures (eg, exercise and early nutrition intervention) should be implemented.

Purpose: The effect of pre-existing sarcopenia on patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) remains unknown. Therefore, we designed a propensity score-matched population-based cohort study to compare the oncological outcomes of patients with OCSCC undergoing curative surgery with and without sarcopenia. Patients and Methods: We included patients with OCSCC undergoing curative surgery and categorized them into two groups according to the presence or absence of pre-existing sarcopenia. Patients in both the groups were matched at a ratio of 2:1. Results: The matching process yielded 16,294 patients (10,855 and 5439 without and with pre-existing sarcopenia, respectively). In multivariate Cox regression analyses, the adjusted hazard ratio (aHR, 95% confidence interval [CI]) of all-cause mortality for OCSCC with and without pre-existing sarcopenia was 1.15 (1.11−1.21, p < 0.0001). Furthermore, the aHRs (95% CIs) of locoregional recurrence and distant metastasis for OCSCC with and without pre-existing sarcopenia were 1.07 (1.03−1.18, p = 0.0020) and 1.07 (1.03−1.20, p = 0.0148), respectively. Conclusions: Pre-existing sarcopenia might be a significant poor prognostic factor for overall survival, locoregional recurrence, and distant metastasis for patients with OCSCC undergoing curative surgery. In susceptible patients at a risk of OCSCC, sarcopenia prevention measures should be encouraged, such as exercise and early nutrition intervention.

Fisetin, a naturally occurring flavonoid, is found in common fruits and vegetables and has been shown to induce cytotoxic effects in many human cancer cell lines. No information has shown that fisetin induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in mouse leukemia WEHI-3 cells. We found that fisetin decreased total viable cells through G0/G1 phase arrest and induced sub-G1 phase (apoptosis). We have confirmed fisetin induced cell apoptosis by the formation of DNA fragmentation and induction of apoptotic cell death. Results indicated that fisetin induced intracellular Ca 2+ increase but decreased the ROS production and the levels of ΔΨ m in WEHI-3 cells. Fisetin increased the activities of caspase-3, -8 and -9. Cells were pre-treated with inhibitors of caspase-3, -8 and -9 and then treated with fisetin and results showed increased viable cell number when compared to fisetin treated only. Fisetin reduced expressions of cdc25a but increased p-p53, Chk1, p21 and p27 that may lead to G0/G1 phase arrest. Fisetin inhibited anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL and increased pro-apoptotic protein Bax and Bak. Furthermore, fisetin increased the protein expression of cytochrome c and AIF. Fisetin decreased cell number through G0/G1 phase arrest via the inhibition of cdc25c and induction of apoptosis through caspase-dependent and mitochondria-dependent pathways. Therefore, fisetin may be useful as a potential therapeutic agent for leukemia.

Transparent display is one of the main technologies in next-generation displays, especially for augmented reality applications. An aperture structure is attached on each display pixel to partition them into transparent and black regions. However, diffraction blurs caused by the aperture structure typically degrade the transparent image when the light from a background object passes through finite aperture window. In this paper, the diffraction effect of an active-matrix organic light-emitting diode display (AMOLED) is studied. Several aperture structures have been proposed and implemented. Based on theoretical analysis and simulation, the appropriate aperture structure will effectively reduce the blur. The analysis data are also consistent with the experimental results. Compared with the various transparent aperture structure on AMOLED, diffraction width (zero energy position of diffraction pattern) of the optimize aperture structure can be reduced 63% and 31% in the x and y directions in CASE 3. Associated with a lenticular lens on the aperture structure, the improvement could reach to 77% and 54% of diffraction width in the x and y directions. Modulation transfer function and practical images are provided to evaluate the improvement of image blurs.

Numerous clinical anticancer drugs are obtained from natural plants and Hedyotis diffusa Willd (EEHDW) has been used as a major component in Traditional Chinese medicine formulas since a long time. Ethanol extracts of EEHDW have been shown to possess various biological activities including anticancer function in vitro. Our earlier studies have shown that EEHDW affects immune responses in WEHI-3-generated leukemia mice, but EEHDW has not been reported to affect immune responses in a normal mouse model. Herein, we investigated whether EEHDW could affect immune responses on normal murine cells in vivo. Normal BALB/c mice were orally treated with or without EEHDW at 0, 16, 32, and 64 mg/kg or 32 mg/kg by i.p. for 3 weeks, then were weighed, and blood, liver and spleen samples were collected for further experiments. Results indicated that EEHDW did not significantly affect body and liver weight but significantly increased the spleen weight by i.p. treatment when compared to control groups. Flow cytometric assays indicated that EEHDW promoted CD11b levels at 16, 32 and 64 mg/kg oral treatment, CD19 levels at 16, 32, 64 mg/kg oral treatment and i.p. treatment, and Mac-3 levels at 16, 32 and 64 mg/kg oral treatment, however, it did not significantly affect the levels of CD3. Oral treatment with 16 and 32 mg/kg of EEHDW significantly decreased macrophage phagocytosis from PBMC; 32 mg/kg of EEHDW by i.p. treatment significantly increased phagocytosis activity of macrophages obtain from the peritoneal cavity. EEHDW at 32 mg/kg by i.p. treatment led to an increase of NK cell activities compared to oil control groups. EEHDW at 32 mg/kg of EEHDW by i.p. treatment increased B- and T-cell proliferation. Based on these observations, EEHDW seems to have promoted immune responses in this murine model.

This paper utilizes non-Fourier two-temperature heat conduction model to investigate the temperature field in nanometer-sized thin films irradiated by an ultrashort-pulse laser. Ultrashort-pulse laser processing for nanometer-sized devices is usually applied in MEMS and nanotechnology. For ultrashort-pulse laser interaction with metals, the two-temperature model was proposed to describe the heat transport in metals due to a substantial nonequilibrium between the electron and lattice temperature. For heat conduction in nanoscale devices, Fourier law is inadequate for describing the heat conduction in nanoscale due to the boundary scattering and the finite relaxation time of heat carriers. Therefore, in this work, the Non-Fourier two-temperature heat conduction model used to analyze ultrashort-pulse laser processing of nanoscale metal film. The result obtained from non-Fourier heat conduction equations is compared with the available experimental data. The parametric effects are also discussed.

In this study the thermal field is presented for pulse laser processing of nanoscale Au films. Fourier law is inadequate for describing the heat conduction in nanoscale process due to the boundary scattering and the finite relaxation time of heat carriers. In the regime where the particle description of electrons and phonons is valid, the Boltzmann equation is the most accurate option to model heat transfer in such problems. However, solving the Boltzmann equation is generally difficult due to involving three spatial, three momentums and one time. Dual-phase-lag (DPL) model is averaged over the momentum space and thus involves only spatial coordinates plus time, as in the Fourier equation. Therefore this paper utilizes the dual-phase-lag (DPL) model with scattering boundary condition to study the temperature field for laser processing of nanometer-sized thin films instead of Boltzmann equation. The results obtained from the dual-phase-lag heat conduction model, hyperbolic and parabolic heat conduction equations were compared with the available experimental data to validate the compatibility of the thermal models for analyzing the heat transfer in nanoscale thin film irradiated by laser. The temperature history at different locations of the thin film and the effects of boundary phonon scattering on the normalized temperature were also discussed.
