RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The effect of velamentous cord insertion (VCI) on perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies is unclear due to conflicting findings. This retrospective study aimed to examine VCI prevalence and related risk factors in twin pregnancies and its association with adverse perinatal outcomes. METHODS: Women with twin pregnancies who delivered between January 2012 and December 2021 in a single tertiary hospital were included. The participants were divided into dichorionic (DC) and monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) groups, and their maternal and fetal characteristics and VCI rates were compared. Logistic regression models were used to identify risk factors for VCI and VCI-related perinatal outcomes. RESULTS: Among the 694 twin pregnancies included in this study, the VCI rate was significantly higher in MCDA than in DC twins. Body mass index and MCDA twins were significant risk factors for VCI, whereas assisted reproductive technology pregnancy was a significant protective factor against VCI. In DC twins, VCI did not affect perinatal outcomes. In MCDA twins, VCI was a significant risk factor for fetal growth restriction, twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, and preterm birth at <36 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: VCI was a prominent risk factor for adverse perinatal outcomes only in MCDA twins. Antenatal sonographic assessment of the umbilical cord insertion site would be beneficial.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we introduce an R package that performs automated photo editing effects. Specifically, it is an R implementation of an image-processing algorithm proposed by Boyadzhiev et al. (2015). The software allows the user to manipulate the appearance of objects in photographs, such as emphasizing facial blemishes and wrinkles, smoothing the skin, or enhancing the gloss of fruit. It provides a reproducible method to quantitatively control specific surface properties of objects (e.g., gloss and roughness), which is useful for researchers interested in topics related to material perception, from basic mechanisms of perception to the aesthetic evaluation of faces and objects. We describe the functionality, usage, and algorithm of the method, report on the findings of a behavioral evaluation experiment, and discuss its usefulness and limitations for psychological research. The package can be installed via CRAN, and documentation and source code are available at https://github.com/tsuda16k/materialmodifier .

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To assess the impact of the interpregnancy interval (IPI) after cesarean delivery on the risks of adverse perinatal events during subsequent pregnancies. METHODS: We retrospectively examined perinatal outcomes of subsequent pregnancies of women whose most recent birth experience involved cesarean delivery at our hospital between January 2014 and December 2019. IPI was defined as the time between live birth and subsequent conception. Three IPI groups: < 18 months, 18-60 months, and > 60 months, were assessed. The risks of preterm birth, preeclampsia, placenta previa, placental abruption, fetal growth restriction, and successful vaginal birth were compared among the three IPI groups using uni- and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: We registered 592 births after cesarean delivery: 178, 288, and 126 in the IPI < 18 months, 18-60 months, and > 60 months groups, respectively. The groups did not differ significantly regarding perinatal outcomes. The multivariate analysis revealed no significant differences in the risks of adverse perinatal outcomes among all groups. The odds ratios (ORs) for preterm birth at < 37 weeks of gestation were 1.24 and 1.64 for those in the < 18 months and > 60 months groups, respectively (P = 0.362 and P = 0.055, respectively). The groups did not differ significantly regarding vaginal birth success rate (ORs 1.72 for the < 18 months group, 0.49 for the > 60 months group; P = 0.486 and P = 0.446, respectively). CONCLUSION: After cesarean delivery, IPIs shorter than 18 months and longer than 60 months do not significantly impact the risks of adverse perinatal outcomes or successful vaginal birth compared with IPIs of 18-60 months.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 13q deletion syndrome shows variable clinical features related to the different potential breakpoints in chromosome 13q. The severely malformed phenotype is known to be associated with the deletion of a critical region in 13q32. However, esophageal atresia is a rare symptom and the relevant region is unknown. Thus, determining the association between accurate breakpoints and new clinical features is essential. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year-old Japanese primigravid woman was referred for fetal growth restriction, absence of a gastric bubble, cerebellar hypoplasia, overlapping fingers, and polyhydramnios at 31 weeks gestation. At 38 + 0 weeks, she delivered a 1774 g female infant. The infant presented with isolated esophageal atresia (Gross type A), Dandy-Walker malformation, right microphthalmia, left coloboma, overlapping fingers, pleurocentrum in the thoracic vertebrae, reduced anogenital distance, and hearing loss. Her karyotype was diagnosed as 46,XX,del(13)(q32.1-qter) by amniocentesis, but array comparative genomic hybridization after birth revealed the deletion of 13q31.3-qter. At 48 days after birth, the infant underwent surgery for esophageal atresia and was later discharged from the hospital at 7 months of age. CONCLUSION: This case report and the literature reviews supports the previous findings on the pathological roles of haploinsufficiency of the ZIC2/ZIC5 in Dandy-Walker malformation and the EFBN2 haploinsufficiency in eye malformation and hearing loss. Furthermore, the possible involvement of IRS2, COLA1, and COLA2 in eye malformation were identified. This is the first case of 13q deletion syndrome with esophageal atresia (Gross A), but it may be a symptom of VATER/VACTER association (vertebral defects, anorectal malformations, cardiac defects, tracheoesophageal fistula with or without esophageal atresia, renal malformations, and limb defects), as in the previous cases. These symptoms might also be associated with EFBN2 haploinsufficiency, although further research is required.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A mounting number of studies have been documenting the carcinogenic potential of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs); however, only a few studies have evaluated the pulmonary carcinogenicity of MWCNTs in vivo. A 2-year inhalation study demonstrated that MWNT-7, a widely used MWCNT, was a pulmonary carcinogen in rats. In another 2-year study, rats administered MWNT-7 by intratracheal instillation at the beginning of the experimental period developed pleural mesotheliomas but not lung tumors. To obtain data more comparable with rats exposed to MWNT-7 by inhalation, we administered MWNT-7 to F344 rats by intratracheal instillation once every 4-weeks over the course of 2 years at 0, 0.125, and 0.5 mg/kg body weight, allowing lung burdens of MWNT-7 to increase over the entire experimental period, similar to the inhalation study. RESULTS: Absolute and relative lung weights were significantly elevated in both MWNT-7-treated groups. Dose- and time-dependent toxic effects in the lung and pleura, such as inflammatory, fibrotic, and hyperplastic lesions, were found in both treated groups. The incidences of lung carcinomas, lung adenomas, and pleural mesotheliomas were significantly increased in the high-dose group compared with the control group. The pleural mesotheliomas developed mainly at the mediastinum. No MWNT-7-related neoplastic lesions were noted in the other organs. Cytological and biochemical parameters of the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) were elevated in both treated groups. The lung burden of MWNT-7 was dose- and time-dependent, and at the terminal necropsy, the average value was 0.9 and 3.6 mg/lung in the low-dose and high-dose groups, respectively. The number of fibers in the pleural cavity was also dose- and time-dependent. CONCLUSIONS: Repeated administration of MWNT-7 by intratracheal instillation over the 2 years indicates that MWNT-7 is carcinogenic to both the lung and pleura of rats, which differs from the results of the 2 carcinogenicity tests by inhalation or intratracheal instillation.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Overt hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism are associated with pregnancy complications; however, most women with these conditions are diagnosed before conception and are under treatment during pregnancy, especially in high-income countries. The purpose of this study was to investigate pregnancy complications among these women. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted, and data on pregnant women who gave birth to a singleton at Nagoya University Hospital in Japan in 2005-2014 was collected. The pregnancy outcomes were divided and compared among three groups: the control group (n = 3531), the hyperthyroidism group (n = 48), and the hypothyroidism group (n = 61). Additionally, risk factors for placental abruption were evaluated by multivariable logistic regression analysis. Moreover, in hyperthyroidism, thyroid function at the placentation period was compared between placental-related diseases and nonplacental-related disease groups, and the latter group included placental abruption and preeclampsia. Results: The incidence of placental abruption was higher in hyperthyroidism than in control and hypothyroidism groups. Hyperthyroidism was independently associated with an increased risk of placental abruption (adjusted odds ratio, aOR = 8.21, 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.76-38.34), as well as preeclampsia (aOR = 4.10, 95% CI: 1.13-14.76) and preterm labor (aOR = 3.38, 95% CI: 1.19-9.64). Additionally, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) at the placentation period was significantly lower in the placental-related disease group than in the nonplacental-related disease group (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Pregnancy outcomes in women with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism would be comparable with those without thyroid disease. Hyperthyroidism was an independent risk factor for placental abruption as well as preterm labor and preeclampsia. However, its frequency was extremely low, and further research is required to validate our findings.

RESUMEN

Silica frustules of most planktonic diatoms have many shallow holes in which the length (L) is smaller than the width (W). The present study focuses on a silica ultrastructure of setae of a planktonic diatom having deep (L/W > 1) holes. Here, we characterized microscopically patterned nanoholes on the silica walls of thick, robust, and hollow setae of a colony of Chaetoceros coarctatus. Basically, tetragonal poroid arrangements with and without a costa pattern are observed on the inner and outer surfaces, respectively, for three kinds of curving hollow setae attached to the anterior, intercalary, and posterior parts of the colony. The seta structures including specific poroid arrangements and continuity of deep nanoholes depend on the location. The deep nanoholes ∼90 nm wide are elongated from 150 to 1500 nm (L/W ∼17) with an increase in the wall thickness of the polygonal tubes of the setae. The inside poroid array, with a period of 190 nm in the extension direction of setae, is lined by parallel plates of the costae. However, the poroid arrangement on the outer surface is disordered, with several holes obstructed with increasing wall thickness of the posterior terminal setae. According to the movement of a colony in a fluid microchannel, the thick curving terminal setae is suggested to involve attitude control and mechanical protection. Using an optical simulation, the patterned deep through-holes on the intercalary setae were suggested to contribute anti-reflection of blue light in the wavelength range of 400 to 500 nm for the promotion of photosynthesis in seawater.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Considering the expanding industrial applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), safety assessment of these materials is far less than needed. Very few long-term in vivo studies have been carried out. This is the first 2-year in vivo study to assess the effects of double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) in the lung and pleura of rats after pulmonary exposure. METHODS: Rats were divided into six groups: untreated, Vehicle, 3 DWCNT groups (0.12 mg/rat, 0.25 mg/rat and 0.5 mg/rat), and MWCNT-7 (0.5 mg/rat). The test materials were administrated by intratracheal-intrapulmonary spraying (TIPS) every other day for 15 days. Rats were observed without further treatment until sacrifice. RESULTS: DWCNT were biopersistent in the rat lung and induced marked pulmonary inflammation with a significant increase in macrophage count and levels of the chemotactic cytokines CCL2 and CCL3. In addition, the 0.5 mg DWCNT treated rats had significantly higher pulmonary collagen deposition compared to the vehicle controls. The development of carcinomas in the lungs of rats treated with 0.5 mg DWCNT (4/24) was not quite statistically higher (p = 0.0502) than the vehicle control group (0/25), however, the overall incidence of lung tumor development, bronchiolo-alveolar adenoma and bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma combined, in the lungs of rats treated with 0.5 mg DWCNT (7/24) was statistically higher (p < 0.05) than the vehicle control group (1/25). Notably, two of the rats treated with DWCNT, one in the 0.25 mg group and one in the 0.5 mg group, developed pleural mesotheliomas. However, both of these lesions developed in the visceral pleura, and unlike the rats administered MWCNT-7, rats administered DWCNT did not have elevated levels of HMGB1 in their pleural lavage fluids. This indicates that the mechanism by which the mesotheliomas that developed in the DWCNT treated rats is not relevant to humans. CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrate that the DWCNT fibers we tested are biopersistent in the rat lung and induce chronic inflammation. Rats treated with 0.5 mg DWCNT developed pleural fibrosis and lung tumors. These findings demonstrate that the possibility that at least some types of DWCNTs are fibrogenic and tumorigenic cannot be ignored.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: We compared the pregnancy prolongation effect attributable to cervical cerclage to that achieved by conservative management, and determined the cervical length for which cervical cerclage is effective. METHODS: We retrospectively examined medical records of 281 women admitted to our hospital between January 2013 and December 2017 for management of threatened preterm birth at 22-28 weeks of gestation. Obstetricians determined suitability for cervical cerclage, which was performed using the McDonald procedure in all cases. Of the 281 subjects, 71 underwent cervical cerclage (cerclage group); the other 210 received conservative therapy (non-cerclage group). We recorded maternal and neonatal characteristics of all patients. The two groups were compared in terms of length of extension of pregnancy and weeks of gestation at delivery. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify factors associated with extension of time to delivery. RESULTS: Our analyses revealed that the cerclage group was hospitalized earlier in pregnancy than the non-cerclage group (23.7 ± 1.5 weeks vs. 26.4 ± 1.9 weeks, p < .001) and had shorter cervixes (6.0 ± 9.4 mm vs. 16.9 ± 13.0 mm, p < .001). The two groups did not differ significantly in terms of gestational weeks at delivery. Multivariate analysis regarding extension of pregnancy revealed significant differences in extension of pregnancy related with cervical cerclage (26.65 days, 95% CI 17.0 - 36.3, p < .001) and cervical length <10 mm (-27.4 days, 95% CI -36.0--18.8, p < .001). While the time to delivery was extended by cervical cerclage in women with short cervixes (<25 mm), the two groups did not differ when cervical length was ≥15 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Cervical cerclage was a significant positive factor and short cervix was a significant negative factor for elongating pregnancy. In primigravida and multigravida women with no history of preterm birth, when the cervix is short (<10 mm), cervical cerclage should be recommended.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the differences in the impact on maternal renal function between singleton and twin pregnancies in the second half of pregnancy. It retrospectively enrolled 1711 pregnant women consisting of 1547 singleton pregnancies and 164 twin pregnancies from Japanese Red Cross Aichi Medical Center Nagoya Daiichi Hospital from January 2019 to June 2021. Patients underwent renal function tests (serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)) at least one month before delivery. The main outcome measure was maternal renal dysfunction, defined as a serum creatinine level above 0.8 mg/dL. The serum creatinine level was significantly higher and the eGFR was significantly lower in twin than in singleton pregnancies (p < 0.001). In addition, the rate of renal dysfunction was significantly higher in twin than in singleton pregnancies (7.9% vs. 2.6%; p < 0.01). Multivariate analysis revealed that twin pregnancy (odds ratio (OR) 3.38), nulliparity (OR 2.31), and preeclampsia (OR 3.64) were significant risk factors for maternal renal dysfunction. Maternal renal dysfunction was observed in 13 twin pregnancies, all of which recovered to within normal limits during the early months of the postpartum period. Twin pregnancy is a significant risk factor for maternal renal dysfunction; renal function should be carefully monitored in twin pregnancies.

RESUMEN

Alveolar macrophages are responsible for clearance of airborne dust and pathogens. How they recognize and phagocytose a variety of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with different properties is an important issue for safety assessment of ENMs. Surfactant-associated proteins, specifically existing in the pulmonary surfactant, are important opsonins for phagocytosis of airborne microorganisms. The purposes of the current study are to understand whether opsonization of ENMs by surfactant-associated proteins promotes phagocytosis of ENMs and cytokine production, and to determine whether a common pathway for phagocytosis of ENMs with different properties exists. For these purposes, four ENMs, MWCNT-7, TiO2, SiO2, and fullerene C60, with different shapes, sizes, chemical compositions, and surface reactivities, were chosen for this study. Short-term pulmonary exposure to MWCNT-7, TiO2, SiO2, and C60 induced inflammation in the rat lung, and most of the administered ENMs were phagocytosed by alveolar macrophages. The ENMs were phagocytosed by isolated primary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) in vitro, and phagocytosis was enhanced by rat bronchioalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), suggesting that proteins in the BALF were associated with phagocytosis. Analysis of proteins bound to the 4 ENMs by LC/MS indicated that surfactant-associated proteins A and D (SP-A, SP-D) were common binding proteins for all the 4 ENMs. Both BALF and SP-A, but not SP-D, enhanced TNF-α production by MWCNT-7 treated PAMs; BALF, SP-A, and SP-D increased IL-1ß production in TiO2 and SiO2 treated PAMs; and BALF, SP-A, and SP-D enhanced IL-6 production in C60 treated PAMs. Knockdown of CD14, a receptor for SP-A/D, significantly reduced phagocytosis of ENMs and SP-A-enhanced cytokine production by PAMs. These results indicate that SP-A/D can opsonize all the test ENMs and enhance phagocytosis of the ENMs by alveolar macrophages through CD14, suggesting that SP-A/D-CD14 is a common pathway mediating phagocytosis of ENMs. Cytokine production induced by ENMs, however, is dependent on the type of ENM that is phagocytosed. Our results demonstrate a dual role for surfactant proteins as opsonins for both microbes and for inhaled dusts and fibers, including ENMs, allowing macrophages to recognize and remove the vast majority of these particles, thereby, greatly lessening their toxicity in the lung.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the risk factors for antepartum hemorrhage (APH) in women with placenta previa. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we analyzed the medical records of 233 women with singleton pregnancies presenting with placenta previa whose deliveries were performed at our hospital between January 2009 and July 2018. RESULTS: Of the 233 women included in this study, 130 (55.8%) had APH. In the APH group, the gestational age and neonatal birth weight were significantly lower compared with the no hemorrhage group. Maternal age <30 years and multiparity were identified as significant risk factors for APH in both the univariate and multivariate analyses. Focusing on the previous route of delivery in multiparous women, the risk of APH was significantly higher in multiparous women who had experienced at least one vaginal delivery compared with nulliparous women (adjusted odds ratio (OR): 3.42 [95% confidence interval: 1.83-6.38]). CONCLUSION: We showed that women with placenta previa who were under 30 years old and who had a history of vaginal delivery may be at significant risk of experiencing APH.

RESUMEN

Oxidative stress plays a pathological role in pulmonary hypoplasia and pulmonary hypertension in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This study investigated the effect of molecular hydrogen (H2), an antioxidant, on CDH pathology induced by nitrofen. Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: control, CDH, and CDH + hydrogen-rich water (HW). Pregnant dams of CDH + HW pups were orally administered HW from embryonic day 10 until parturition. Gasometric evaluation and histological, immunohistochemical, and real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses were performed. Gasometric results (pH, pO2, and pCO2 levels) were better in the CDH + HW group than in the CDH group. The CDH + HW group showed amelioration of alveolarization and pulmonary artery remodeling compared with the CDH group. Oxidative stress (8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine-positive-cell score) in the pulmonary arteries and mRNA levels of protein-containing pulmonary surfactant that protects against pulmonary collapse (surfactant protein A) were significantly attenuated in the CDH + HW group compared with the CDH group. Overall, prenatal H2 administration improved respiratory function by attenuating lung morphology and pulmonary artery thickening in CDH rat models. Thus, H2 administration in pregnant women with diagnosed fetal CDH might be a novel antenatal intervention strategy to reduce newborn mortality due to CDH.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the success rate of vaginal delivery, the reasons for unplanned caesarean delivery, the rate of umbilical cord prolapse and the risk of umbilical cord prolapse in twin deliveries. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Single institution. PARTICIPANTS: This study included 455 women pregnant with twins (307 dichorionic and 148 monochorionic) who attempted vaginal delivery from January 2009 to August 2018. The following criteria were considered for vaginal delivery: diamniotic twins, cephalic presentation of the first twin, no history of uterine scar, no other indications for caesarean delivery, no major structural abnormality in either twin and no fetal aneuploidy. RESULTS: The rate of vaginal delivery of both twins was 89.5% (407 of 455), caesarean delivery of both twins was 7.7% (35 of 455) and caesarean delivery of only the second twin was 2.9% (13 of 455). The major reasons for unplanned caesarean delivery were arrest of labour and non-reassuring fetal heart rate pattern. The rate of umbilical cord prolapse in the second twin was 1.8% (8 of 455). Multivariate analysis revealed that abnormal umbilical cord insertion in the second twin (velamentous or marginal) was the only significant factor for umbilical cord prolapse in the second twin (OR, 5.05, 95% CI 1.139 to 22.472, p=0.033). CONCLUSIONS: Abnormal umbilical cord insertion in the second twin (velamentous or marginal) was a significant factor for umbilical cord prolapse during delivery. Antenatal assessment of the second twin's umbilical cord insertion using ultrasonography would be beneficial.

RESUMEN

A congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is an anomaly caused by defects in the diaphragm; the resulting limited thorax cavity in turn restricts lung growth (pulmonary hypoplasia). This condition is related to pulmonary hypertension. Despite advances in neonatal CDH therapy, the mortality for severe pulmonary hypoplasia remains high. Therefore, it is essential to establish prenatal therapeutic interventions. Vitamin D was reported to have beneficial effects on adult pulmonary hypertension. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of prenatal vitamin D administration for CDH. First, serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels in umbilical cord blood were evaluated among CDH newborns. Second, Sprague Dawley rat CDH models were exposed to nitrofen on embryo day 9 (E9). Randomly selected rats in the nitrofen-treated group were infused with calcitriol from E9 to E21. Samples from CDH pups diagnosed after birth were used for lung weight measurements, blood gas analysis, and immunohistochemical analysis. Third, microarray analysis was performed to examine the effect of vitamin D on gene expression profiles in CDH pulmonary arterial tissues. Serum 25(OH)D levels in the umbilical cord blood of newborns who did not survive were significantly lower than those who were successfully discharged. Prenatal vitamin D showed no significant effect on CDH incidence or lung weight but attenuated alveolarization and pulmonary artery remodeling accompanied the improved blood gas parameters. Vitamin D inhibited several gene expression pathways in the pulmonary arteries of CDH rats. Our results suggest that prenatal vitamin D administration attenuates pulmonary vascular remodeling by influencing several gene pathways in CDH.

RESUMEN

Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) can cause liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), with cases increasing worldwide. To reduce the incidence of liver cirrhosis and HCC, NASH is targeted for the development of treatments, along with viral hepatitis and alcoholic hepatitis. Lactoferrin (LF) has antioxidant, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory activities. However, whether LF affects NASH and fibrosis remains unelucidated. We aimed to clarify the chemopreventive effect of LF on NASH progression. We used a NASH model with metabolic syndrome established using connexin 32 (Cx32) dominant negative transgenic (Cx32ΔTg) rats. Cx32ΔTg rats (7 weeks old) were fed a high-fat diet and intraperitoneally injected with dimethylnitrosamine (DMN). Rats were divided into three groups for LF treatment at 0, 100, or 500 mg/kg/day for 17 weeks. Lactoferrin significantly protected steatosis and lobular inflammation in Cx32ΔTg rat livers and attenuated bridging fibrosis or liver cirrhosis induced by DMN. By quantitative RT-PCR, LF significantly down-regulated inflammatory (Tnf-α, Il-6, Il-18, and Il-1ß) and fibrosis-related (Tgf-ß1, Timp2, and Col1a1) cytokine mRNAs. Phosphorylated nuclear factor (NF)-κB protein decreased in response to LF, while phosphorylated JNK protein was unaffected. These results indicate that LF might act as a chemopreventive agent to prevent hepatic injury, inflammation, and fibrosis in NASH via NF-κB inactivation.

RESUMEN

Objective: To elucidate the efficacy and safety of attempting a vaginal birth and to understand the factors that contribute to the increased risk of operative delivery in women aged 40 years or older. Methods: A database of the Japanese Red Cross Nagoya Daiichi Hospital was reviewed to identify women aged 40 years or older with singleton, vertex, and vital pregnancies who attempted vaginal delivery at and after 37 + 0 gestational weeks between January 2011 and December 2016.Results: A total of 415 women met the criteria for inclusion in this study, including 372 and 43 women who gave birth by vaginal delivery and by intrapartum cesarean section (CS), respectively. Vaginal delivery was observed in 84.1% (201/239) and 97.2% (171/176) of nulliparous and multiparous women, respectively. In a logistic regression model, nulliparity [odds ratio (OR), 5.18; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.91-14.00], assisted reproductive technology (OR, 2.83; 95% CI, 1.42-5.62), and admission for induction of childbirth (OR, 2.68; 95% CI, 1.08-6.67) were associated with a higher likelihood of intrapartum CS. Of 372 women who delivered vaginally, 62 women needed operative delivery. Operative delivery was necessary for 25.4% (51/201) and 6.4% (11/171) of nulliparous and multiparous women, respectively. A logistic regression model identified nulliparity (OR, 3.91; 95% CI, 1.89-8.08) and administration of ecbolic (OR, 2.49; 95% CI, 1.21-5.10) as being independent factors associated with vacuum extraction. Conclusions: Maternal age 40 years or older should not be a barrier for attempting a vaginal delivery, and those women should be encouraged to attempt a vaginal delivery.

RESUMEN

Patients with ulcerative colitis or colonic Crohn's disease have a significantly increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Bovine lactoferrin (bLF) reportedly inhibited the development of colon cancer in rats and mice, and in a placebo controlled trial, ingestion of bLF inhibited the growth of intestinal polyps. In addition, in a case study, a patient with Crohn's disease was reported to have remained in remission for over 7 years while ingesting 1 g of bLF daily. Thus, bLF has an inhibitory effect on colon carcinogenesis, and it may also promote remission of Crohn's disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of bLF in a mouse model of colorectal cancer related to irritable bowel disease (IBD). The mice were divided into 4 groups: (i) no treatment; (ii) treated with bLF only; (iii) treated with azoxymethane plus dextran sulfate sodium (AOM + DSS); and (iv) treated with AOM + DSS + bLF. AOM was used to initiate intestinal cancer, and DSS was used to induce IBD-like inflammation in the intestine of the C57BL/6 mice. At the end of the study, the mice treated with AOM + DSS + bLF had a better fecal score, fewer lesions in the colon, and less weight loss than the mice treated with AOM + DSS without bLF. However, there were no statistically significant differences between the two groups with respect to tumor burden.

RESUMEN

A key challenge for the visual system entails the extraction of constant properties of objects from sensory information that varies moment by moment due to changes in viewing conditions. Although successful performance in constancy tasks requires cooperation between perception and working memory, the function of the memory system has been under-represented in recent material perception literature. Here, we addressed the limits of material constancy by elucidating if and how working memory is involved in constancy tasks by using a variety of material stimuli, such as metals, glass, and translucent objects. We conducted experiments with a simultaneous and a successive matching-to-sample paradigm in which participants matched the perceived material properties of objects with or without a temporal delay under varying illumination contexts. The current study combined a detailed analysis of matching errors, data on the strategy use obtained via a self-report questionnaire, and the statistical image analysis of diagnostic image cues used for material discrimination. We found a comparable material constancy between simultaneous and successive matching conditions, and it was suggested that, in both matching conditions, participants used similar information processing strategies for the discrimination of materials. The study provides converging evidence on the critical role of working memory in material constancy, where working memory serves as a shared processing bottleneck that constrains both simultaneous and successive material constancy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes can be divided into two general subtypes: tangled and straight. MWCNT-N (60 nm in diameter) and MWCNT-7 (80-90 nm in diameter) are straight-type MWCNTs, and similarly to asbestos, both are carcinogenic to the lung and pleura when administered to rats via the airway. Injection of straight-type MWCNTs into the peritoneal cavity also induces the development of mesothelioma, however, injection of tangled-type MWCNTs into the peritoneal cavity does not induce carcinogenesis. To investigate these effects in the lung we conducted a 2-year comparative study of the potential carcinogenicities of a straight-type MWCNT, MWCNT-A (approximately 150 nm in diameter), and a tangled-type MWCNT, MWCNT-B (7.4 nm in diameter) after administration into the rat lung. Crocidolite asbestos was used as the reference material, and rats administered vehicle were used as the controls. Test materials were administered by intra-Tracheal Intra-Pulmonary Spraying (TIPS) once a week over a 7 week period (8 administrations from day 1 to day 50), followed by a 2-year observation period without further treatment. Rats were administered total doses of 0.5 or 1.0 mg MWCNT-A and MWCNT-B or 1.0 mg asbestos. RESULTS: There was no difference in survival between any of the groups. The rats administered MWCNT-A or asbestos did not have a significant increase in bronchiolo-alveolar hyperplasia or tumors in the lung. However, the rats administered MWCNT-B did have significantly elevated incidences of bronchiolo-alveolar hyperplasia and tumors in the lung: the incidence of bronchiolo-alveolar hyperplasia was 0/20, 6/20, and 9/20 in the vehicle, 0.5 mg MWCNT-B, and 1.0 mg MWCNT-B groups, respectively, and the incidence of adenoma and adenocarcinoma combined was 1/19, 5/20, and 7/20 in the vehicle, 0.5 mg MWCNT-B, and 1.0 mg MWCNT-B groups, respectively. Malignant pleural mesothelioma was not induced in any of the groups. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this initial study indicate that tangled-type MWCNT-B is carcinogenic to the rat lung when administered via the airway, and that straight-type MWCNT-A did not have higher carcinogenic potential in the rat lung than tangled-type MWCNT-B.
