RESUMEN

Inle Lake, an ancient lake located in the Shan Plateau of Myanmar, is a biogeographically attractive region with high fish endemism. Some endemic species inhabit the lake as well as the surrounding areas. The genetic and ecological relationships between populations in the lake and surrounding areas provide important insights into the process underlying ichthyofaunal formation in Inle Lake. In this study, the authors focused on red dwarf rasbora Microrasbora rubescens, an endemic genus and species in this region, and estimated its population structure and evolutionary scenario based on genome-wide polymorphism, mtDNA and geometric morphometric analyses using samples from Inle Lake and three areas surrounding the lake. The results showed that M. rubescens comprises at least three genetically divergent lineages (Inle, Heho and Hopong) with distinct geographic structures consistent with nuclear and mtDNA data. In contrast, there was no clear regional differentiation in morphology. The divergence time estimation based on mtDNA suggests that the Hopong lineage diverged at 2.7 Ma and the Inle and Heho lineages diverged at 1.9 Ma - consistent with the nuclear DNA results. The deep divergence observed in the endemic species supports the ancient history of ichthyofaunal development in this region. The distinct regional differentiation and morphological conservatism of this species might have been shaped by niche conservatism in stagnant water environments that limit dispersal and morphological diversification. Future comprehensive genetic and morphological analyses and comparisons for other native species should reveal the geographic and ecological processes that shaped the ichthyofauna in this region.

RESUMEN

Hopong, a small town in the Salween (Thanlwin) River Basin, Myanmar, is located 35 km northeast of Inle Lake, a famous ancient lake with numerous endemic fish species. We surveyed the fish fauna of a spring pond in Hopong in 2016, 2019 and 2020 and identified 25 species. Of these, seven, including Inlecyprisauropurpureus and Sawbwaresplendens, had been considered endemic to Inle Lake and at least three species were genetically unique. Eight were suspected or definite introduced species, including Oreochromisniloticus and Gambusiaaffinis. We were unable to identify a nemacheilid species of the genus Petruichthys, which would need a taxonomic examination. The Hopong area is being developed rapidly and, hence, it is crucial to conserve its native fish species and the freshwater ecosystems.

RESUMEN

The Indian subcontinent has an origin geologically different from Eurasia, but many terrestrial animal and plant species on it have congeneric or sister species in other parts of Asia, especially in the Southeast. This faunal and floral similarity between India and Southeast Asia is explained by either of the two biogeographic scenarios, 'into-India' or 'out-of-India'. Phylogenies based on complete mitochondrial genomes and five nuclear genes were undertaken for ricefishes (Adrianichthyidae) to examine which of these two biogeographic scenarios fits better. We found that Oryzias setnai, the only adrianichthyid distributed in and endemic to the Western Ghats, a mountain range running parallel to the western coast of the Indian subcontinent, is sister to all other adrianichthyids from eastern India and Southeast-East Asia. Divergence time estimates and ancestral area reconstructions reveal that this western Indian species diverged in the late Mesozoic during the northward drift of the Indian subcontinent. These findings indicate that adrianichthyids dispersed eastward 'out-of-India' after the collision of the Indian subcontinent with Eurasia, and subsequently diversified in Southeast-East Asia. A review of geographic distributions of 'out-of-India' taxa reveals that they may have largely fuelled or modified the biodiversity of Eurasia.

RESUMEN

This article examined the association between social capital of fathers and child undernutrition using a community-based survey in Myanmar in 2018. The anthropometric measurements of 1546 children aged 6 to 59 months and face-to-face interviews of 1546 respective biological fathers were performed. The three social capital indicators (institutional trust, social supports, and collective action) were included in 2-level logistic regression models for child wasting and child stunting. Social supports from fathers' social networks were protective measures for child wasting and child stunting at individual and community levels, respectively. The collective action of fathers was positively associated with child stunting at individual level. No association was found between institutional trust and both indicators of child undernutrition at all levels. The individual-level collective action on child stunting was conditional on the community-level social supports. Our findings suggest that existing nutritional strategies in Myanmar may be strengthened by targeting fathers to increase their support in child nutrition and by targeting the community to engage in the nutritional programs with their full support.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Inle (Inlay) Lake, an ancient lake of Southeast Asia, is located at the eastern part of Myanmar, surrounded by the Shan Mountains. Detailed information on fish fauna in and around the lake has long been unknown, although its outstanding endemism was reported a century ago. NEW INFORMATION: Based on the fish specimens collected from markets, rivers, swamps, ponds and ditches around Inle Lake as well as from the lake itself from 2014 to 2016, we recorded a total of 948 occurrence data (2120 individuals), belonging to 10 orders, 19 families, 39 genera and 49 species. Amongst them, 13 species of 12 genera are endemic or nearly endemic to the lake system and 17 species of 16 genera are suggested as non-native. The data are all accessible from the document "A dataset of Inle Lake fish fauna and its distribution (http://ipt.pensoft.net/resource.do?r=inle_fish_2014-16)", as well as DNA barcoding data (mitochondrial COI) for all species being available from the DDBJ/EMBL/GenBank (Accession numbers: LC189568-LC190411). Live photographs of almost all the individuals and CT/3D model data of several specimens are also available at the graphical fish biodiversity database (http://ffish.asia/INLE2016; http://ffish.asia/INLE2016-3D). The information can benefit the clarification, public concern and conservation of the fish biodiversity in the region.

RESUMEN

This study was conducted to determine the feasibility of disseminating reproductive health (RH) information to the general public of Myanmar in a confidential, anonymous and interactive way through a telephone hotline. We carried out a cross-sectional study using a short questionnaire interview with the RH hotline callers and analyzing sample audio recordings of conversations. The hotline was advertised in print media. It was answered by trained hotline responders (medical doctors) of Department of Madical Research (Lower Myanmar) (DMR-LM). There were 743 calls during six months, from all 14 States and Divisions. Most of the calls were from Yangon, Mandalay and Bago Division. Both male (48%) and female (52%) callers used the hotline. The majority of callers (74%) were between 25 and 45 years old; 21% were young people (15-25 years old). Married people (81%) used the hotline more than singles (19%). Most of the callers (91%) had a high school to graduate education level. The most frequently asked topics were infertility (23%), birth spacing (22%), sexual problems (13%) and adolescent health, including reproductive function (12%). The anonymity of the callers, the non-judgmental attitudes of the responders and the use of media for publicity appeared to facilitate the use of the hotline by the public. More linkages with service entry points, enhancement of communication skills, sexual counselling training and use of media can improve topic coverage and utilization of the reproductive health hotline.

RESUMEN

A cross-sectional survey of 56 youth, using participatory research methods, was conducted with the objective to identify the sexual and reproductive health needs among vulnerable youth in Pyin Oo Lwin town in terms of their livelihoods, perceptions about health and health risks, sex practices, perceived health information needs and preferred channels for health information, and visions for their future generation. The results indicated that a majority of young people of both sexes were deficient in knowledge of the locations and functions of reproductive organs. The majority of respondents of both sexes said that their main health concern was AIDS. Pre-marital sex among youth, 16-20 years of age, was identified in our study. Malaria and AIDS were mentioned as information needed by young people. TV and magazines/journals were prioritized as preferred channels of disseminating health messages. Almost all reported that education was the one thing that they wanted for their own children.

RESUMEN

This study was to determine the relationship between a commonly used social stratification indicator, net equivalent income, and self-rated health, long-term disability, visual acuity status, death rate, birth rate, unsafe delivery and school enrollment in a rural area of Myanmar. Data were collected from 3,558 respondents in 805 households of all ages. Data analysis for various items was based on different age groups. The results from two income groups (highest and lowest) are as follows: the percent of those who self-rated their health as very good were 17.8% and 10.4% in the highest and lowest income groups, respectively (adjusted coefficient = 0.30, 95% Cl 0.11-0.50); those with an acute medical condition were found in 16.3% and 20.8% in the highest and lowest income groups, respectively (adjusted OR = 1.35, 95% Cl 1.08-1.68); those with long-term disability were found in 15.3% and 21.2% in the highest and lowest income groups, respectively (adjusted OR = 1.39, 95% Cl 1.05-1.84); and those with poor visual acuity at a distance of 13 feet were found in 8.1% and 13.5% in the highest and lowest income groups, respectively (adjusted OR = 1.64, 95% Cl 1.18-2.30). The birth rate ratio was 1.3, the death rate ratio was 1.2, and school enrollment was found in 92.8% and 83.2% in the highest and lowest income groups, respectively (adjusted OR = 0.34, 95% Cl 0.1-0.8). These results indicate that there is an urgent need to strengthen the health care infrastructure and educational system, targeting the poor in rural areas.

RESUMEN

A knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) study concerning the nature and prevention of malaria was carried out in a rural area of Myanmar. According to the findings, many (over 40%) people do not have a clear cut knowledge on the transmission of malaria. Only one fourth of them had chemoprophylaxis before going to the forest, but they do not have the proper knowledge of the chemoprophylaxis regarding the type and dosage. Although there is acceptable knowledge (about 80% of the subject knew that mosquito bite causes malaria) and positive attitude towards malaria (100% of respondents agreed that malaria was a serious health problem in this area and 97% of respondents agreed that they would like to participate in malaria control activities), it is necessary to increase the community awareness of the transmission of the disease, its consequences and ways and means to control the disease to a minimum, especially in endemic areas.
