RESUMEN

Interest in nanoparticle modification using functional chemicals has increased rapidly, as it allows more freedom of physiochemical tuning of the nanoparticle's surface into biomedically oriented and designated properties. However, the observation and detection of the thin molecular layers on the nanoparticle surface are very challenging under current analytical facilities. The focus of this research is to demonstrate fundamental interactions between the surface treated nanoparticles and their host liquid media using lab-based experimentation and simulation. In this research, investigation has been carried out on analyzing the surface compatibility and the diffusivity of modified CuO nanoparticles (CuONPs) with short-chain carboxylate-terminated molecules in biofluids. Moreover, during the current Covid-19 pandemic, the Cu/CuONPs have proved effective in killing SARS-CoV1/2 and other airborne viruses. This research was conducted at the molecular level with joint consideration of experimental and simulation studies for characterization of variables. Experimental tests conducted using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy demonstrated several spectral ranges of interest, specifically, detection of three major carboxylate attachments (i.e., 1667-1609 cm-1, 1668-1557 cm-1, etc.) were found. From simulation, similar attachment styles were observed by the LAMMPS simulation package that mimicked similar agglomerations with a predicted diffusion coefficient as recorded to be 2.28E-9 m2/s. Viscosities of modified nanofluids were also compared with unmodified nanofluids for defining aggregation kinetics.

BACKGROUND: Osteoid osteomata comprise approximately 10% of benign bone tumours, with 20% of them being located in the proximal femur and 1-3% in the pelvis. In this meta-analysis, we sought to investigate positive and negative outcomes relating to minimally invasive surgery (MIS), which has superseded open resection and conservative measures over the last decades. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, CENTRAL and grey literature for completed studies published until 10 August 2020. Articles with a minimum of ten patients diagnosed with osteoid osteomata of the proximal femur and/or acetabulum were included. Primary outcomes were success rates, complications and recurrences following treatment. Delays in diagnosis were also recorded. We conducted random effects meta-analysis of success rates for MIS modalities using MedCalc statistical software. Quality was assessed with a modified Delphi checklist. RESULTS: Sixteen case-series were identified. Success rates for computed-tomography (CT)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA), CT-guided percutaneous resection drilling and arthroscopic resection were 98.2% (95% CI 95.8-99.5), p = 0.47; 91.5% (95% CI 81.1-97.9), p = 0.06; and 98% (95% CI 89.3-99.7), p = 0.95, respectively. Both RFA and percutaneous drilling resection were associated with two iatrogenic femoral fractures. Arthroscopic removal was not associated with any complications. Definitive diagnosis was established at least six months after symptom onset in up to 43% of patients. CONCLUSIONS: RFA could be the most effective treatment options for patients suffering from osteoid osteomata of the hip. Arthroscopy could be potentially as effective as RFA as long as further large-scale studies confirm its efficacy and safety. Reported complications stemming from these modalities were sparse in nature. In order to avoid inordinate diagnostic delays, a high index of suspicion and low threshold for CT scan investigation is required.

RESUMEN

The Asia-Pacific region carries a high disease burden, with over half of the global diabetic population residing in this region. Increasing evidence shows that without targeted intervention, the progression from impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) to type 2 diabetes occurs more frequently in Asians compared with Caucasians. Furthermore, IGT is independently associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and should be managed as early as possible. Because diabetes is now a major public health issue, strategies aimed at prevention and treatment are urgently required. Lifestyle modification, including weight loss, dietary changes and increased physical activity, play a major role in controlling the disease. Significant evidence also supports the effectiveness of a combination of lifestyle modification and pharmacologic therapy, such as metformin, in delaying the onset of diabetes. Although the importance of lifestyle interventions is well recognized throughout Asia, many countries do not have formal recommendations to guide the diagnosis and management of individuals at risk of progression to diabetes. At a recent regional meeting, experts from the Asian region convened to develop consensus recommendations to guide clinicians in the management of Asian patients with pre-diabetes. These consensus recommendations provide a clear and concise approach to the management of individuals with IGT based on the available evidence and current best clinical practice.
