RESUMEN

The study investigates the antecedents that influence social distancing behavior during the COVID-19 outbreak and develops a hypothetical model integrating additional pertinent variables into the classic theory of planned behavior (TPB) to grasp the social distancing behavior accurately. The extended model was investigated employing structural equation modeling using the data collected through Snowball Technology from 331 respondents. The results unearth significant influences of all the predictor variables on their outcome variables. Surprisingly, the supportive government strategy has no crucial impact on perceived behavioral control toward social distancing. Furthermore, the study reports no trivial difference between young and old and high-low income groups on the intention-actual social distancing. The study outlines policy interventions to prevent mass transmission of the COVID-19 catastrophe. Lastly, limitations are specified to open up novel insights for future researchers.

Purpose: Considering the severity of the global outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) on the whole of humanity, particularly in this case on the physical and mental health of students, this study strives to explore the role of financial worries, employment anxiety and COVID-19 knowledge on depression and mental health among students in Bangladesh. Design/methodology/approach: In the study, a deductive reasoning approach was employed, together with a self-administered questionnaire survey. Questionnaires were sent to the respondents via different social media and by email by creating a Google form link. We finally received 387 responses students aged over 18 years who had internet access in order to complete the survey. To analyze the data, structural equation modeling via AMOS was used. Findings: The results showed that employment anxiety, financial worry, and knowledge on COVID-19 positively influence depression, and finally depression negatively influences the mental health of the students. Thus, our findings supported all of the proposed hypotheses. Originality/value: The research enriches the existing literature pool by contributing empirical substantiation on the role of employment anxiety, financial worries and knowledge of COVID-19 in depression, and the impact of depression on mental health.

Recent advancements in mHealth apps and services have played a vital role in strengthening healthcare services and enabling their accessibility to marginalized people. With the alarming rise in COVID-19 infection rates around the world, there appears to be an urgent call to modernize traditional medical practices to combat the pandemic. This study aims to investigate the key factors influencing the trialability of mHealth apps/services and behavioral intention to adopt mobile health applications. The study also examines the moderating effects of self-discipline motivation, knowledge, and attitude on the relationship between trialability and behavioral intention to use. The deductive reasoning approach was followed in a positivism paradigm. The study used convenience sampling and collected responses from 280 Generation Y participants in Bangladesh. Partial least square-based structural equation modeling was employed. The results revealed that relative advantage (ß = 0.229, p < 0.05), compatibility (ß = 0.232, p < 0.05), complexity (ß = −0.411, p < 0.05), and observability (ß = 0.235, p < 0.05) of mHealth apps influence the trialability of mHealth apps and services among users. Trialability compatibility (ß = 0.425, p < 0.05) of mHealth was positively related to the behavioral intention to use these mobile apps. The study found no moderating effects of attitude (ß = 0.043, p > 0.05) or self-discipline motivation (ß = −0.007, p > 0.05) on the hypothesized relationships. The empirical findings of this study may facilitate the development, design process, and implementation of mHealth applications with improved features that can lead to high user acceptance among Generation Y during future health crises.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impacts of employees' creative self-efficacy (CSE) and creative self-identity (CSI) on their innovative work behaviour (IWB), with the indirect effects of creative process engagement (CPE) and creative climate (CC). Following the deductive reasoning approach, the study was conducted on IT-based firms in Bangladesh. A total of 348 surveys were collected using a multi-item questionnaire. The collected data were then analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM). The study reveals a significant relationship between CSE and IWB, and CSI and IWB. It further explores the significant mediating effects of CPE and the moderating effects of CC on CSE and IWB, and CSI and IB, relationships. Based on the premise of interactionist perspectives on creativity, this study contributes to the literature proposing a distinctive model comprising five variables to investigate employees' IWB from a multi-level perspective. This integrated model, using predictors from multiple levels, supports the theoretical assumption that IB results from employees' CSE, CSI, and, finally, CPE. Distinct from the other literature, the study also portrays the moderating and mediating impact of CC and CPE simultaneously.

Considering the severity of the effects of COVID-19 on psychological health and quality of life, the present study investigates the direct effects of government strategies and social distancing and the moderating effect of emotional recovery on psychological distress and quality of life using the tenets of the theory of attachment and learned helplessness. The snowball sampling technique was used to recruit respondents from Bangladesh who completed a self-administered questionnaire via Google Forms, which provided cross-sectional data. The results revealed that both social distancing and government strategies have significant negative influences on psychological distress. Besides, government strategies have a significant positive influence on social distancing. Although psychological distress has a significant negative influence on quality of life, emotional recovery shows no moderating effect on the relationship between psychological distress and quality of life during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study provides insights for regulatory bodies and policymakers for developing effective policy interventions to ensure the well-being of people during this pandemic. Finally, the study highlights the implications for both theory and practice and a few notes for further research.

Grammothele lineata, an endophyte isolated in our laboratory from jute (Corchorus olitorius acc. 2015) was found to be a substantial paclitaxel producer. Taxol and its related compounds, produced by this endophyte were extracted by growing the fungus in simple nutrient media (potato dextrose broth, PDB). Taxol was identified and characterized by different analytical techniques (TLC, HPLC, FTIR, LC-ESI-MS/MS) following its extraction by ethyl acetate. In PDB media, this fungus was found to produce 382.2 µgL-1 of taxol which is about 7.6 x103 fold higher than the first reported endophytic fungi, Taxomyces andreanae. The extracted taxol exhibited cytotoxic activity in an in vitro culture of HeLa cancer cell line. The fungal extract also exhibited antifungal and antibacterial activities against different pathogenic strains. This is the first report of a jute endophytic fungus harboring the capacity to produce taxol and also the first reported taxol producing species that belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum, so far unknown to be a taxol producer. These findings suggest that the fungal endophyte, Grammothele lineata can be an excellent source of taxol and can also serve as a potential species for chemical and genetic engineering to enhance further the production of taxol.

Pioglitazone, a member of the thiazolidinediones, is a potent, highly selective agonist for peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma and is an excellent insulin sensitizer used in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. The present study investigated the effect of pioglitazone on glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, total proteins, albumin (ALB), alanine transaminase (ALT), and aspartate transaminase (AST) levels in 20 healthy Bengali male volunteers in a randomized, placebo-controlled study. Blood samples were collected before and 0.5-24.0 hours after a single oral dose of a 30 mg pioglitazone tablet. Plasma pioglitazone level was determined using a validated method of reverse-phase binary high-performance liquid chromatography. Blood lipid profile and levels of glucose, ALT, and AST were estimated using enzyme assay kits, plasma protein level was estimated by the biuret method, and plasma ALB level was determined colorimetrically. No significant change in blood glucose, total proteins, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, and LDL levels was observed over the 24-hour assessment period, indicating no plasma biochemical alterations. There were no significant differences between baseline and 24-hour values of ALB, ALT, and AST levels, indicating a lack of liver toxicity. Our results indicate that a single dose of 30 mg of pioglitazone has no hypoglycemic or hypolipidemic effect or liver toxicity within 24 hours of treatment among healthy Bengali males.
