RESUMEN

Saccharomyces boulardii group (SB group) calves were fed 2.0 × 1010 CFU/day of S. boulardii in milk replacer after 2 wk of age. All calves received inactivated vaccine for Histophilus somni, Pasteurella multocida, and Mannheimia haemolytica at 3 wk of age and 3 wk later. After vaccination, the SB group calves showed significantly higher (mean difference: 1.56-fold) antibody titer against H. somni than the control group. The number of calves with the antibody titer above the cut-off value for M. haemolytica of the SB group was significantly higher than that of the control, and the percentage was twice as high. In addition, the mRNA transcription of IL4 and IL10 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells at the booster of the SB group was significantly higher than those of the control. In conclusion, S. boulardii may have positively affected immune responses to the inactivated multi-bacterial vaccine in young calves in the field.


Les veaux du groupe Saccharomyces boulardii (groupe SB) ont reçu 2,0 × 1010 UFC/jour de S. boulardii dans du lait de remplacement après l'âge de 2 semaines. Tous les veaux ont reçu un vaccin inactivé contre Histophilus somni, Pasteurella multocida et Mannheimia haemolytica à l'âge de 3 semaines et 3 semaines plus tard. Après vaccination, les veaux du groupe SB ont montré un titre d'anticorps contre H. somni significativement plus élevé (différence moyenne : 1,56 fois) que le groupe témoin. RESUMEN

The number of deaths caused by drug-resistant bacteria is expected to increase in the future, and there is a need to develop new antimicrobial agents. Recently, the antiplatelet drug ticagrelor has been reported to have promising antibacterial properties. The purpose of this review is to analyze articles and case reports that describe the antimicrobial action of ticagrelor. Ticagrelor was found to have antibacterial reactions against Gram-positive bacteria, including drug-resistant and spore-forming bacteria, while no effect was observed against Gram-negative bacteria. In this paper we discuss a new potential antimicrobial agent, ticagrelor.

A 58-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital. At 10 years old, she had undergone bilateral uretero-sigmoid anastomosis for congenital epispadias, and at 57 years old, she had received transverse colostomy. Biochemical tests showed marked metabolic acidosis. Computed tomography showed urine stagnation in the sigmoid colon, leading to a diagnosis of metabolic acidosis associated with transverse stoma after bilateral uretero-sigmoid anastomosis. Her bone mineral density was below normal, and the bone metabolic marker levels were high, indicating high-turnover osteoporosis. Both metabolic acidosis and bone metabolism were stabilized by treatment with a transanal urinary catheter, sodium bicarbonate, and vitamin D.

RESUMEN

Tuberculosis is a common etiology of granulomatous interstitial nephritis (GIN). However, the absence of evidence of lung involvement and lack of mycobacterial isolation in cultures make the etiological diagnosis and treatment decision challenging. We herein report a 46-year-old man with severe renal failure, a persistent fever, and a history of lymphoma. A renal biopsy exhibited GIN. Despite no evidence of tuberculosis except for a positive interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA), the patient was successfully treated with anti-tuberculosis drugs. Our case suggests that anti-tuberculosis therapy should be considered for patients with IGRA-positive GIN after excluding other etiologies.

BACKGROUND: Several reports on patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) treated by peritoneal dialysis (PD) have shown a higher risk of PD-associated peritonitis compared to non-DM (NDM) patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence of PD-associated peritonitis in DM patients. METHODS: We divided all patients who received PD at a single center between January 1980 and December 2012 into three groups according to era: Period 1 (n = 43, 1980-1993); Period 2 (n = 123, 1994-2004); and Period 3 (n = 207, 2005-2012). We investigated incidences of PD-associated peritonitis between patients with and without DM. RESULTS: In Periods 1 and 2, incidence of PD-associated peritonitis was higher in the DM group than in the NDM group (P<0.05). However, no difference according to presence of DM was seen in Period 3. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed DM as a risk factor for incidence of PD-associated peritonitis in Periods 1 and 2, but not in Period 3 (hazard ratio [HR], 2.49; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.15 to 5.23; HR, 2.36; 95%CI, 1.13 to 4.58; and HR, 0.82; 95%CI, 0.41 to 1.54, respectively). Furthermore, the peritonitis-free period was significantly shorter in the DM group than in the DM group in Periods 1 and 2, whereas no significant difference was seen in Period 3 (P<0.01, P<0.01 and P = 0.55, respectively). Moreover, a significant interaction was seen between diabetes and study period, and became less pronounced during Period 3(P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The increased risk of peritonitis in diabetics reported in previous periods has not been evident in recent years.

We demonstrate in this paper how scientists in the 19th century did researches on the nervous system; some scientists tried to make the nature of "nerve impulse" clear only to fail, while others chose to investigate how the nervous system works, leaving the nature of the impulse unknown. A. Mosso and H. D. Rolleston, for example, attempted to detect heat produced in nerves with a view to elucidating the nature of the impulse. The heat, they believed, would suggest that "nerve impulse" was nothing but "a wave of chemical reaction" or "a wave of molecular vibration." On the other hand, C. S. Sherrington who introduced the term synapsis in 1897 to refer to the special connection between nerve cells--special in the sense it offers an opportunity for "nerve impulse" to change in its nature--refrained from examining the nature of the impulse. He believed that it was impossible for science at the time to elucidate the nature. He, therefore, focused his attention to reactions of muscles in an animal caused when various stimulations were applied on animal's skin in a remote area from the muscles. He did not probe into the working of the nerves running between the part where stimulation was given and the part where corresponding reaction occurred. He pursued his studies by using phenomenalistic approach. We call his approach "phenomenalistic" because his research focused only on contradictions of muscles easily seen without probing into minute arrangement in a body. Gotch and Horsley, like Sherrington, did not argue about the nature of "nerve impulse." But unlike Sherrington, they made experiments with electrical changes produced in nerves or a spinal cord, based on the idea that "nerve impulse" should accompany certain electrical changes. Making use of their electrical method effectively, they obtained a series of quantitative data as to the electrical changes. The data they collected allowed them to explore distribution of nerves deep in a body and even led them to contemplate the existence of "field of conjunction" in a spinal cord. They introduced the concept to explain decrease in quantity and delay in transmission time of the electrical change, which was observed when a nerve impulse traversed a certain part of the spinal cord. This idea was considerably similar to "synapse" introduced six years later by Sherrington.

To map the functional synaptic organization over a wide area in the optic tectum, we directly monitored two-dimensional propagation of postsynaptic depolarization evoked by firing of retinotectal afferents in optic tectum slices prepared from rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), using a voltage-sensitive dye and a photodiode array system. The postsynaptic responses to afferent stimulation first propagated in the stratum opticum and stratum fibrosum et griseum superficiale in an anterograde fashion in the afferents and then expanded vertically into the deep layers. This vertical propagation appeared to occur along a bundle-like structure that corresponded well with a cluster of neurons whose somata are located in the stratum periventriculare. Pharmacological studies showed that these postsynaptic responses were mediated by ionotropic glutamate receptors. On the other hand, the optical signals appeared to consist of at least two components (a transient signal and a slow signal). The second transient signal summated with the first slow signal by paired stimulation, suggesting that the transient and slow signals originated from different cell types. Taken together, these results showed that the functional synaptic organization of the teleost optic tectum comprises of two depolarization-signal propagating paths along a horizontal layer structure and a vertical bundle-like structure and that these synaptic responses occur via glutamatergic transmission.
