RESUMEN

Magnetic resonance cholangiography (MRC) is an established diagnostic tool for noninvasive assessment of the biliary tract in humans. It has also been found to be feasible in companion animals, but no published studies have compared MRC sequences in veterinary medicine. The present study is part of a prospective, observational, analytical investigation on MR cholangiopancreatography performed on the donated bodies of 12 cats and eight dogs. The main aim of this study was to compare the images of 2D-SSh-TSE-MRC and 3D-TSE-MRC sequences for visualization and image quality of the feline and canine biliary tract. Both sequences are T2-weighted and noncontrast. Three independent readers scored the visibility of four segments of the biliary tract, namely the gallbladder (GB), cystic duct, common bile duct (CBD), and extrahepatic ducts, and the image quality of the two MRC sequences using five-point Likert scales. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the scores between the MRC sequences separately for cats and dogs. Inter- and intraobserver agreements were measured using Gwet's AC2 with linear weighting. The 3D-TSE-MRC images were scored significantly higher than the 2D-SSh-TSE-MRC for both visibility and image quality (P < .001-.016 for cats, P = .008-.031 for dogs); the only exception was GB in dogs. In both cats and dogs, interobserver agreement for segment visibility and image quality ranged from slight to substantial in 2D-SSh-TSE-MRC and from poor to almost perfect in 3D-TSE-MRC. Most of the assessments (73% for segment visibility and 66% for image quality) had substantial to almost perfect intraobserver agreement. Findings from the current study support the use of 3D-TSE-MRC over 2D-SSh-TSE-MRC for evaluation of the feline and canine biliary tract, but further studies on live animals are warranted.

Turbinate destruction is an important diagnostic criterion in canine and feline nasal computed tomography (CT). However decreased turbinate visibility may also be caused by technical CT settings and nasal fluid. The purpose of this experimental, crossover study was to determine whether fluid reduces conspicuity of canine and feline nasal turbinates in CT and if so, whether CT settings can maximize conspicuity. Three canine and three feline cadaver heads were used. Nasal slabs were CT-scanned before and after submerging them in a water bath; using sequential, helical, and ultrahigh resolution modes; with images in low, medium, and high frequency image reconstruction kernels; and with application of additional posterior fossa optimization and high contrast enhancing filters. Visible turbinate length was measured by a single observer using manual tracing. Nasal density heterogeneity was measured using the standard deviation (SD) of mean nasal density from a region of interest in each nasal cavity. Linear mixed-effect models using the R package 'nlme', multivariable models and standard post hoc Tukey pair-wise comparisons were performed to investigate the effect of several variables (nasal content, scanning mode, image reconstruction kernel, application of post reconstruction filters) on measured visible total turbinate length and SD of mean nasal density. All canine and feline water-filled nasal slabs showed significantly decreased visibility of nasal turbinates (P < 0.001). High frequency kernels provided the best turbinate visibility and highest SD of aerated nasal slabs, whereas medium frequency kernels were optimal for water-filled nasal slabs. Scanning mode and filter application had no effect on turbinate visibility.

Soft tissue injuries of the shoulder are an important cause of forelimb lameness in dogs. The objectives of this canine cadaver study were to describe normal anatomy of shoulder soft tissue structures using computed tomography (CT) and computed tomographic arthrography (CTA) and to determine the effects of positioning on visualization of shoulder soft tissue structures. Thirteen forelimbs were removed from eight canine cadavers. Two forelimbs were used for contrast dose optimization. For the remaining 11 forelimbs, shoulder CT and CTA were performed using three defined joint angles (140°, 90°, and 70°). For three forelimbs, CT and CTA images were compared with frozen anatomic sections to describe normal anatomy. Ten forelimbs were used for analysis of positioning effects. Soft tissue structures evaluated were the joint capsule, cartilage, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. A visual assessment score was assigned to each structure using a consensus of two observers. The range and mode of scores were calculated and compared for each modality and limb position. The shoulder joint capsule and medial and lateral glenohumeral ligaments were completely visible with CTA. All tendons and muscles were visualized in all the examinations except for the teres minor muscle tendon and the coracobrachialis muscle, which were not visible on all scans. Positioning the limb in an extended position significantly improved visualization of most soft tissue shoulder structures. Shoulder cartilage was best seen with CTA and with neutral or flexed positioning of the shoulder. Findings indicated that both CT and CTA are feasible imaging techniques for visualization of soft tissue structures of the canine shoulder.
