RESUMEN

Dryland agricultural system is under threat due to climate extremes and unsustainable management. Understanding of climate change impact is important to design adaptation options for dry land agricultural systems. Thus, the present review was conducted with the objectives to identify gaps and suggest technology-based intervention that can support dry land farming under changing climate. Careful management of the available agricultural resources in the region is a current need, as it will play crucial role in the coming decades to ensure food security, reduce poverty, hunger, and malnutrition. Technology based regional collaborative interventions among Universities, Institutions, Growers, Companies etc. for water conservation, supplemental irrigation, foliar sprays, integrated nutrient management, resilient crops-based cropping systems, artificial intelligence, and precision agriculture (modeling and remote sensing) are needed to support agriculture of the region. Different process-based models have been used in different regions around the world to quantify the impacts of climate change at field, regional, and national scales to design management options for dryland cropping systems. Modeling include water and nutrient management, ideotype designing, modification in tillage practices, application of cover crops, insect, and disease management. However, diversification in the mixed and integrated crop and livestock farming system is needed to have profitable, sustainable business. The main focus in this work is to recommend different agro-adaptation measures to be part of policies for sustainable agricultural production systems in future.

Conventional Nafion membranes demonstrate a strong affinity for methanol, resulting in a high fuel crossover, poor mechanical stability, and thus poor performance in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). This study involves the synthesis and physiochemical characterization of an alternative polymer electrolyte membrane for DMFCs based on sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) and a layered double hydroxide (LDH) material. Nanocomposite membranes (sPL), with filler loading ranging between 1 wt% and 5 wt%, were prepared by simple solution intercalation and characterized by XRD, DMA, swelling tests, and EIS. For the first time, water and methanol mobility inside the hydrophilic channels of sPEEK-LDH membranes were characterized by NMR techniques. The introduction of LDH nanoplatelets improved the dimensional stability while having a detrimental effect on methanol mobility, with its self-diffusion coefficient almost two orders of magnitude lower than that of water. It is worth noting that anionic lamellae are directly involved in the proton transport mechanism, thus enabling the formation of highly interconnected paths for proton conduction. In this regard, sPL3 yielded a proton conductivity of 110 mS cm-1 at 120 °C and 90% RH, almost attaining the performance of the Nafion benchmark. The nanocomposite membrane also showed an excellent oxidative stability (over more than 24 h) during Fenton's test at 80 °C. These preliminary results demonstrate that an sPL3 nanocomposite can be potentially and successfully applied in DMFCs.

The study is aimed to evaluate the protective impact of banana peel extract (BPE) following noise induce behavioral deficits in male mice. Animals were separated into two groups (control and test, 12 in each). Control mice were given drinking water, at the same time test group was given BPE (400 mg/kg; oral administration). Animals have received their respective treatment for 14 days. Mice were subdivided (n=6) into unstressed and stressed groups on day 15. Noise stress was given to the respective group for 4-h. Behavioral activities were monitored 24-h after the 4-h noise stress. Forced-swim-test, Elevated-plus-maze and light-dark-activity-box tests were performed for depression/anxiety-like behaviors respectively. Morris-water-maze assessment was used for memory. After behavioral tests animals were sacrificed and brain was detached for biochemical estimations and histopathological studies. In the present study, BPE produced anxiolytic and antidepressant-like effects and enhanced memory. Activity of antioxidant enzymes increased while levels of AChE and MDA decreased in BPE treated animals. Histopathological alterations induced by noise stress were also normalized by BPE. It is concluded that supplementation/administration of banana peel has preventive effects against anxiety, depression and memory impairment via its strong antioxidant potential following NS.
