RESUMEN

White feces syndrome (WFS) is a multifactorial disease that affects global shrimp production. The diagnostic approach to identify WFS involves traditional and molecular scientific methods by examining histopathology, bioassays, PCR (polymerase chain reaction), and calorimetric estimation. The pathogenesis of WFS is closely associated with Vibrio spp., intestinal microbiota (IM) dysbiosis, and Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei (EHP). It also has caused over 10-15 % loss in the aquaculture industry and is also known to cause retardation, lethargy and slowly leading to high mortality in shrimp farms. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the molecular mechanisms processed under the association of IM dysbiosis, Vibrio spp., and EHP to analyze the impact of disease on the innate immune system of shrimp. However, only very few reviews have described the molecular pathways involved in WFS. Hence, this review aims to elucidate an in-depth analysis of molecular pathways involved in the innate immune system of shrimp and their response to pathogens. The analysis and understanding of the impact of shrimp's innate immune system on WFS would help in developing treatments to prevent the spread of disease, thereby improving the economic condition of shrimp farms worldwide.

In India, stroke is a significant health concern, with an estimated prevalence of around 1.54% in adults over 20 years old. The incidence of stroke in India varies regionally but is generally high due to factors like hypertension and lifestyle changes. Ischemic strokes comprise the majority, particularly in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) territory. MCA stroke presents with diverse symptoms such as weakness, speech difficulties, and vision problems, emphasizing the need for comprehensive rehabilitation. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in addressing these challenges, focusing on strength, coordination, mobility, and independence through tailored interventions. Additionally, soft robotic gloves, such as Syrebo's rehabilitation, offer promising advancements in neurorehabilitation by enhancing motor recovery and functional abilities, particularly in improving grip strength and hand functionality, thus improving outcomes for stroke patients. This case describes a 66-year-old female presenting with sudden left-sided weakness, slurred speech, and facial deviation indicative of bilateral MCA territory infarct. After admission requiring ventilation and medication, imaging confirmed the diagnosis. Following stabilization, she underwent neurophysiotherapy for rehabilitation. Neurological examination revealed deficits in muscle tone, reflexes, cranial nerve function, language, and swallowing. Outcome measures indicated progress in rehabilitation. The case underscores the significance of timely diagnosis and personalized rehabilitation in optimizing outcomes for MCA territory stroke patients.

A major neurological disorder with major socioeconomic effects is spinal cord injury (SCI). This case report aims to document the comprehensive physiotherapy rehabilitation intervention employed in the successful restoration of function in a patient with quadriparesis following cervical spine trauma. An 84-year-old male presented with quadriparesis resulting from a traumatic cervical spine injury sustained in a motor vehicle accident. The patient underwent an individualized physiotherapy rehabilitation program consisting of assessment, goal-setting, and targeted interventions. The rehabilitation plan included a combination of a range of motion exercises, strengthening exercises, neuro-muscular re-education, and functional training. The patient's progress was regularly monitored, and adjustments were made to the rehabilitation program as needed. Over the course of the rehabilitation program, the patient demonstrated significant improvements in muscle strength, joint range of motion, and overall functional abilities. Objective measures, such as manual muscle testing and goniometry, were used to track progress. The patient regained independence in activities of daily living, such as self-care and mobility, and exhibited enhanced motor control and coordination. This case report highlights the efficacy of a tailored physiotherapy rehabilitation approach in restoring function in a patient with quadriparesis following cervical spine trauma. The successful outcomes suggest that a comprehensive and individualized rehabilitation program can significantly contribute to the recovery of individuals with similar conditions. Further research and documentation of such cases may provide valuable insights into optimal rehabilitation strategies for individuals with cervical spine injuries and associated neurological deficits.

This study investigated the reproductive toxicity of rhodamine B in zebrafish and its transgenerational effects on the F1 generation. In silico toxicity predictions revealed high toxicity of rhodamine B, mainly targeting pathways associated with the reproductive and endocrine systems. In vivo experiments on zebrafish demonstrated that rhodamine B exposure at a concentration of 1.5 mg/L led to significant impairments in fecundity parameters, particularly affecting females. Histopathological analysis revealed distinct changes in reproductive organs, further confirming the reproductive toxicity of rhodamine B, with females being more susceptible than males. Gene expression studies indicated significant suppression of genes crucial for ovulation in rhodamine B-treated female fish, highlighting hormonal imbalance as a potential mechanism of reproductive toxicity. Furthermore, bioaccumulation studies showed the presence of rhodamine B in both adult fish gonads and F1 generation samples, suggesting transgenerational transfer of the dye. Embryotoxicity studies on F1 generation larvae demonstrated reduced survival rates, lower hatching rates, and increased malformations in groups exposed to rhodamine B. Moreover, rhodamine B induced oxidative stress in F1 generation larvae, as evidenced by elevated levels of reactive oxygen species and altered antioxidant enzyme activity. Neurotoxicity assessments revealed reduced acetylcholinesterase activity, indicating potential neurological impairments in F1 generation larvae. Additionally, locomotory defects and skeletal abnormalities were observed in F1 generation larvae exposed to rhodamine B. This study provides comprehensive evidence of the reproductive toxicity of rhodamine B in adult zebrafish and its transgenerational effects on the F1 generation.

Paraprobiotics, known as non-viable or ghost probiotics, have attracted attention for their benefits over live microbial cells. This study was designed to investigate the paraprobiotic effects of heat-killed Bacillus coagulans on the white leg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. The paraprobiotic formulation was prepared in three different concentrations including B. coagulans 1 (107 cells g-1 diet), B. coagulans 2 (108 cells g-1 diet), and B. coagulans 3 (109 cells g-1 diet) through heat inactivation method. Preliminary toxicity assessments revealed that post-larvae shrimps (mean weight ± SE: 0.025 ± 0.007 g) treated with B. coagulans 1, 2 and 3 paraprobiotic formulations exhibited no mortality, confirming the non-toxic nature of the formulated diet. In a 90-day feeding trial involving juvenile shrimps (mean weight ± SE: 0.64 ± 0.05 g), growth parameters and feed conversion ratios improved in all experimental groups. Subsequently, these shrimps were challenged with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, revealing that paraprobiotic-fed shrimps exhibited significant survival rate improvements. Oxidative stress-related enzyme activities, such as superoxide dismutase and catalase, increased in paraprobiotic-fed shrimps post-Vibrio challenge, while the challenged control group showed decreased activity (p < 0.001). Nitric oxide levels are also increased in paraprobiotic-treated shrimp, with B. coagulans 3 showing a significant rise in nitric oxide activity (p < 0.001). This study further demonstrated the positive impact of paraprobiotic treatment on digestive enzymes, immune-related parameters (e.g., total hemocyte count, prophenoloxidase, and respiratory burst activity), and overall disease resistance. These findings suggest that B. coagulans paraprobiotics have the potential to enhance antioxidant, antibacterial, and immune-related responses in L. vannamei, making them a valuable addition to shrimp aquaculture.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most common aging-associated neurodegenerative dementia disorder, is defined by the presence of amyloid beta (Aß) and tau aggregates in the brain. However, more than half of patients also exhibit aggregates of the protein TDP-43 as a secondary pathology. The presence of TDP-43 pathology in AD is associated with increased tau neuropathology and worsened clinical outcomes in AD patients. Using C. elegans models of mixed pathology in AD, we have previously shown that TDP-43 specifically synergizes with tau but not Aß, resulting in enhanced neuronal dysfunction, selective neurodegeneration, and increased accumulation of pathological tau. However, cellular responses to co-morbid tau and TDP-43 preceding neurodegeneration have not been characterized. In this study, we evaluate transcriptomic changes at time-points preceding frank neuronal loss using a C. elegans model of tau and TDP-43 co-expression (tau-TDP-43 Tg). We find significant differential expression and exon usage in genes enriched in multiple pathways including lipid metabolism and lysosomal degradation. We note that early changes in tau-TDP-43 Tg resemble changes with tau alone, but a unique expression signature emerges during aging. We test loss-of-function mutations in a subset of tau and TDP-43 responsive genes, identifying new modifiers of neurotoxicity. Characterizing early cellular responses to tau and TDP-43 co-pathology is critical for understanding protective and pathogenic responses to mixed proteinopathies, and an important step in developing therapeutic strategies protecting against pathological tau and TDP-43 in AD.

This review article conducts a comprehensive analysis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and its ramifications for both maternal health and the well-being of their offspring. GDM is a significant pregnancy complication in which women who have never had diabetes acquire chronic hyperglycemia during their gestational period. In most cases, hyperglycemia is caused by impaired glucose tolerance caused by pancreatic beta cell dysfunction in the background of chronic insulin resistance. Being overweight or obese, having an older mother age, and having a family history of any type of diabetes are all risk factors for developing GDM. GDM consequences include a higher risk of maternal cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type 2 diabetes, as well as macrosomia and delivery difficulties in the newborn. There is also a longer-term risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease in the infant. Premature birth, hypoglycemia at birth, and shoulder dystocia are also a few of the fetal problems that can result from GDM. Unfortunately, there is no widely acknowledged treatment or preventative strategy for GDM at the moment, except lifestyle modification (diet and exercise) and, on occasion, insulin therapy, which is only of limited value due to the insulin resistance that is commonly present. Although new oral medications for diabetes management, such as glyburide and metformin, show potential, there are ongoing worries regarding their safety over an extended period for both the mother and the child. By identifying gaps in the research, it calls for further investigations and a multidisciplinary approach, ultimately aiming to enhance the management and care for women with GDM, which would impact these affected individuals indubitably.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has witnessed remarkable progress in recent years, driven by innovative techniques and refined approaches that have transformed patient outcomes and treatment paradigms. This review article comprehensively explores the latest advances in CABG techniques and their consequential impacts on patient outcomes. The advent of minimally invasive CABG techniques has revolutionized traditional surgical approaches. Robotic-assisted surgery and small thoracotomy methods offer reduced invasiveness, yielding shorter recovery times and improved patient satisfaction. Integrating CABG with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), hybrid procedures have emerged as a versatile strategy, providing tailored treatment solutions for complex coronary anatomies. The paradigm shift to off-pump CABG, which preserves the beating heart during surgery, has shown promise in reducing perioperative complications and neurocognitive deficits. Advances in graft selection, particularly the utilization of arterial grafts such as the internal thoracic artery and radial artery, have significantly enhanced graft patency rates and long-term survival. Adjunctive technologies, such as intraoperative imaging and graft flow assessment, have bolstered the precision of CABG procedures. Pharmacological agents have demonstrated their potential to improve graft outcomes. Surgical decision-making is now optimized based on patient characteristics and disease severity owing to the development of patient selection and risk stratification tools. Long-term results have also significantly improved. Patients undergoing CABG have higher survival rates, less angina, and better quality of life. Developing more resilient grafts through tissue engineering, using bioresorbable materials in graft fabrication, and using gene therapy to improve graft patency and overall cardiac recovery are all exciting future research directions. This review's summary of current developments in CABG procedures highlights their profoundly positive effects on patient outcomes. These developments can change the face of cardiovascular care by giving clinicians more tools to treat coronary artery disease (CAD) and enhance patients' quality of life.

Shrimp aquaculture is a rapidly growing sector that makes a significant economic contribution. However, the aquaculture industry is confronted with significant challenges, and infectious diseases, notably Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND), have emerged as severe threat. AHPND is caused by pathogens carrying the pVA-1 plasmid, which expresses the PirAB toxin, and it has wreaked havoc in shrimp aquaculture, imposing substantial economic burdens. To address this issue, it is crucial to delve into shrimp's immune responses. Therefore, this comprehensive review offers an in-depth examination of AHPND outbreaks, encompassing various facets such as environmental factors, host susceptibility, and the mechanisms employed by the pathogens. Traditional approaches to combat AHPND, primarily relying on chemicals and antibiotics, have raised concerns related to antibiotic resistance and have demonstrated limited success in disease control. Hence this review spotlights recent advancements in molecular diagnostics, therapeutic agents, and research related to shrimp immunity. Understanding these developments is crucial in the ongoing battle against AHPND. In conclusion, this review underscores the pressing need to comprehend the underlying mechanisms of AHPND pathogenesis and emphasizes the importance of developing comprehensive and effective solutions to combat this devastating disease, which continues to threaten the sustainability of shrimp farming.

Surfactants are a group of amphiphilic molecules (i.e., having both hydrophobic and hydrophilic domains) that are a vital part of nearly every contemporary industrial process such as in agriculture, medicine, personal care, food, and petroleum. In general surfactants can be derived from (i) petroleum-based sources or (ii) microbial/plant origins. Petroleum-based surfactants are obvious results from petroleum products, which lead to petroleum pollution and thus pose severe problems to the environment leading to various ecological damages. Thus, newer techniques have been suggested for deriving surfactant molecules and maintaining environmental sustainability. Biosurfactants are surfactants of microbial or plant origins and offer much added advantages such as high biodegradability, lesser toxicity, ease of raw material availability, and easy applicability. Thus, they are also termed "green surfactants". In this regard, this review focused on the advantages of biosurfactants over the synthetic surfactants produced from petroleum-based products along with their potential applications in different industries. We also provided their market aspects and future directions that can be considered with selections of biosurfactants. This would open up new avenues for surfactant research by overcoming the existing bottlenecks in this field.

Genistein (GEN), an isoflavonoid, offers multifunctional biological activities. However, its poor oral bioavailability, aqueous solubility, extensive metabolism, and short half-life restricted its clinical use. Therefore, the Phospholipon®90H complex of genistein (GPLC) was prepared to enhance its biopharmaceutical properties and anti-inflammatory activity. GPLC was characterized by employing particle size and zeta potential, Fourier transforms infrared spectrophotometry, differential scanning calorimetry, powder x-ray diffractometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, aqueous solubility, in vitro dissolution, ex vivo permeation, oral bioavailability and in vivo anti-inflammatory activity. The complex showed high entrapment of GEN (∼97.88% w/w) within the Phospholipon®90H matrix. Particle size and zeta potential studies confirmed the small particle size with the modest stability of GPLC. The characterization analysis supported the formation of GPLC through the participation of hydrogen bonding between GEN and Phospholipon®90H. GPLC significantly enhanced the aqueous solubility (∼2-fold) compared to GEN. Dissolution studies revealed that GPLC drastically improved the GEN dissolution rate compared to GEN. Likewise, the complex improved the permeation rate across the membrane compared to GEN. GPLC formulation significantly enhanced the oral bioavailability of GEN via improving its Cmax, tmax, AUC, half-life and mean residence time within the blood circulation compared to GEN. The GPLC (∼20 mg/kg, p.o.) remarkably inhibited the increase in paw edema up to 5 h, compared to GEN and diclofenac. Results suggest that the Phospholipon®90 complex is a superior and promising carrier for enhancing the biopharmaceutical parameters of GEN and other bioactive with similar properties.

Deaths from lung cancer are mostly caused by smoking. Cough, dyspnea, fatigue, weight loss, and Horner's syndrome are among the symptoms. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) are the two categories into which lung cancer may be divided. Because of its effectiveness and lower death rates, lobectomy is the primary line of therapy for benign and early-stage lung illnesses. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a routine treatment for thoracic surgery individuals who are at a high risk to improve functional ability, avoid postoperative deterioration, avoid postoperative deterioration, and reduce complications and even hospital stays. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a multifaceted continuum of services intended to help individuals with pulmonary disease and their families reach and sustain their highest possible degree of independence and community functioning, typically provided by an interdisciplinary team of specialists.  The objective of this research was to gather preliminary information and assess the effects of pre-rehabilitation on those suffering from lung cancer and having lobectomy. The pre-rehabilitation program's outcomes include increased lung functional capacity, enhanced quality of life, patient independence in daily living activities, and a shorter hospital stay. Gradually increasing walking distance over time can build endurance, requiring consistency, pacing, proper hydration, nutrition, and regular breaks. This review analyzed the effect of pre-rehabilitation in lung cancer patients undergoing lobectomy. Pre-rehabilitation program for individuals with lung cancer improves both preoperative and postoperative health through various exercises. Pulmonary rehabilitation is a multidisciplinary approach that encourages physical activity, learning about disease, treatment options, and coping mechanisms. Instead of curing the illness, its goal is to lessen its symptoms and limitations. Patients with pulmonary diseases or undergoing thoracic surgery prefer pre-rehabilitation programs due to their non-traumatic nature and fewer resources required. Elastic resistance band exercises are beneficial for lung cancer patients' pre-rehabilitation by strengthening and stretching muscle groups, improving exercise capacity, and supporting white blood cell counts. These exercises can be customized to individual needs, making them a safe and effective addition to a patient's exercise routine. They have to be carried out at least three days a week. Pulmonary exercise, including the use of a tri-ball pulmonary exerciser or three-ball spirometer, can improve lung function, respiratory muscle strength, and exercise capacity in lung cancer patients. It involves breathing techniques, cough exercises, and inflating a balloon. Pulmonary rehabilitation has a positive impact on patient health. Improved lung vital capacity, shorter hospital stays, and fewer problems following surgery are all achieved with pulmonary rehabilitation. The pre-rehabilitation plan allows the patient to resume their daily routines.

BACKGROUND: There are a number of different substances and treatments that are effective in mitigating the negative effects of tooth bleaching. It is essential, however, to consider whether or not the presence of these factors affects the efficiency of the bleaching agent. AIM: The purpose of this study is to determine how the pretreated enamel with a Neodymium-Doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd:YAG) laser affects the bleaching effect of hydrogen peroxide at a concentration of 35%. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Thirty samples were prepared from human-extracted permanent anterior teeth and stained using a tea solution. Based on the pre-treatment protocol, the samples were split into two equal groups (n = 15): In Group I, samples were submerged in saline solution for five minutes, while in Group II, Nd:YAG laser treatment was performed. Following pretreatment, samples from both groups were bleached with 35% hydrogen peroxide. Colour analysis of all samples was done before and after bleaching using a spectrophotometer. For the colour analysis, the CIE L*a*b* (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage) System of colour measurement was used. For statistical analysis, Student t-tests (two-tailed, unpaired) were used to compare the means of two groups on a continuous scale. RESULTS: Samples from both groups became lighter in colour following bleaching. After bleaching, there was no discernible difference in the total colour change between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The application of the Nd:YAG laser before bleaching did not influence the whitening efficacy of 35% hydrogen peroxide.

Dependency on digital devices resulting in an ever-increasing daily screen time has subsequently also been the cause of several adverse effects on physical and mental or psychological health. Constant exposure to devices like smartphones, personal computers, and television can severely affect mental health- increase stress and anxiety, for example, and cause various sleep issues in both children as well as adults. Risk factors for obesity and cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension, poor regulation of stress, low HDL cholesterol, and insulin resistance are among the physical health repercussions we see. The psychological health effects comprise suicidal tendencies and symptoms of depression which are associated with digital device dependency, screen-time-induced poor sleep quality, and content-influenced negativity. Oftentimes it can cause the induction of a state of hyper-arousal, increase stress hormones, desynchronize the body clock or the circadian cycle, alter brain chemistry and create a drag on mental energy and development. With a focus on brain development in children and detrimental effects in both adults and children, this research article goes on to explore the various aspects of screen addiction and excessive screen exposure.

The acute scrotum is a clinical scenario and it is considered as a paediatric urological emergency with acute onset of pain and swelling of the scrotum with its contents. It is quite challenging for the clinician to make a precise differential diagnosis because it has various etiologies, overlapping clinical presentations and the extreme tenderness over the area that makes clinical examination difficult. Torsion of the testis is a surgical emergency condition with prevalence of acute scrotal disease in the paediatric population that occurs due to twisting the spermatic cord. This case provides a clue to clinician for managing with the unique situation of parasitic disease as an acute scrotum.

In this research, the adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) ions from the aquatic environment have been studied using newly synthesized magnetic nanoparticles coated mixed fungal biomass (MNP-FB). Two fungal biomass such as Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus niger were isolated, screened, and utilized as a precursor for making an adsorbent. Molecular characterization of isolated fungal species was recognized using 18S rRNA sequencing. The characterization studies of the MNP-FB were evaluated using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrophotometer (FTIR) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. Optimization studies were studied to check the effect of different operating variables such as pH (2.0-9.0), equilibrium time (10-90 min), MNP-FB dosage (0.1-1.0 g/L), temperature (30-60 °C) and concentration of Cr(VI) ions (50-500 mg/L). Additionally, Freundlich isotherm model fits well for the adsorption of Cr(VI) ion using MNP-FB. The adsorption kinetics was interpreted well by Pseudo-first order model. The thermodynamic study concluded that Cr(VI) ions removal by MNP-FB was exothermic and appreciative at low temperatures. The monolayer adsorption efficiency of MNP-FB for Cr(VI) ions was measured as 249.9 mg/g. The current results reveal that MNP-FB has considered being a proficient and economically suitable material for the Cr(VI) ions removal from the water environment.

BACKGROUND: Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) is expressed in the brain exclusively on microglia and genetic variants are linked to neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease (AD), frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and Nasu Hakola Disease (NHD). The Trem2 variant R47H, confers substantially elevated risk of developing late onset Alzheimer's disease, while NHD-linked Trem2 variants like Y38C, are associated with development of early onset dementia with white matter pathology. However, it is not known how these Trem2 species, predisposes individuals to presenile dementia. METHODS: To investigate if Trem2 Y38C or loss of Trem2 alters neuronal function we generated a novel mouse model to introduce the NHD Trem2 Y38C variant in murine Trem2 using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. Trem2Y38C/Y38C and Trem2-/- mice were assessed for Trem2 expression, differentially expressed genes, synaptic protein levels and synaptic plasticity using biochemical, electrophysiological and transcriptomic approaches. RESULTS: While mice harboring the Trem2 Y38C exhibited normal expression levels of TREM2, the pathological outcomes phenocopied Trem2-/- mice at 6 months. Transcriptomic analysis revealed altered expression of neuronal and oligodendrocytes/myelin genes. We observed regional decreases in synaptic protein levels, with the most affected synapses in the hippocampus. These alterations were associated with reduced synaptic plasticity. CONCLUSION: Our findings provide in vivo evidence that Trem2 Y38C disrupts normal TREM2 functions. Trem2Y38C/Y38C and Trem2-/- mice demonstrated altered gene expression, changes in microglia morphology, loss of synaptic proteins and reduced hippocampal synaptic plasticity at 6 months in absence of any pathological triggers like amyloid. This suggests TREM2 impacts neuronal functions providing molecular insights on the predisposition of individuals with TREM2 variants resulting in presenile dementia.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a quick, safe, and minimally invasive method to screen for diabetes using gingival blood with the help of self-monitoring glucometer during periodontal examination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A hospital-based, cross-sectional comparative study was conducted among 40-59-year-old diabetic and nondiabetic population who had come for their master health examination to a private tertiary care hospital (Global Hospital and Health City) in Chennai. Among them, those who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected for the study. Thirty diabetic and thirty nondiabetic patients with moderate to severe gingivitis were enrolled and subjected to routine clinical periodontal examination. Blood samples of two sites were analyzed using a glucose self-monitoring device (Accu-Check). Patients were tested for venous fasting blood sugar (VFBS), venous postprandial blood sugar (VPPS), gingival fasting blood sugar (GFBS) level, gingival postprandial blood sugar (GPPS) level, peripheral fingerstick fasting blood sugar (PFBS) level, and peripheral fingerstick postprandial sugar (PPPS) level. Data obtained were statistically analyzed using Student's t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation test. RESULTS: A significant positive correlation was found between GFBS and VFBS, GFBS and PFBS, GPPS and VPPS, and GPPS and PPPS (P < 0.01) in both diabetic and nondiabetic patients correlation. Using venous blood glucose level as a gold standard, the sensitivity and specificity of GFBS was 93% and 100%, respectively, whereas in GPPS, the sensitivity and specificity was 80% and 96%, respectively. CONCLUSION: Gingival blood glucometry can be used as a minimally invasive screening tool for diabetes mellitus in dental clinics.

BACKGROUND: Dental caries is as ancient as humankind and has the longest association with the dental profession, an association that is punctuated with agony and ecstasy. The agonizing fact is that despite several efforts toward total eradication, this disease is still prevalent. Nevertheless, an ecstatic success of the profession is the global decline in the incidence compared to the yesteryears' epidemics. Hence, predicting dental caries earlier is a boon. One such model to predict is cariogram developed by Bratthall in 1996. AIM: The aim of this study was to assess the caries risk among 12-13 year old school-going children of government and private schools of Tirupur district in Tamil Nadu using cariogram computer model. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was carried out among 136 study subjects of 12-13 year of age, who fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a predesigned questionnaire and scored according to a standardized protocol. The Chi-square test was used to find differences between caries-related factors and cariogram group. The correlation was acquired using Spearman's correlation. RESULTS: Government school study subjects had 56% of chance of avoiding caries whereas the private school study subjects had 66% of chance of avoiding caries in future and the differences were statistically significant (P = 0.001). A negative correlation was observed between the chance to avoid dental caries and cariogram sectors. CONCLUSION: The majority of the study subjects from government school belonged to medium-risk category and private school subjects belonged to low-risk category which inferred that private school students have high chance to avoid dental caries compared to government study subjects.
