RESUMEN

The Smith-Watson-Topper parameter (SWT) in its original form was designed to estimate the fatigue life of metal materials in a uniaxial load state (tension-compression) in the range up to fatigue crack initiation, with non-zero mean values. This parameter is based on the analysis of both stress and strain. Therefore, the stress-strain criterion is the focus, rather than the energy criterion. This paper presents the original SWT model and its numerous modifications. The first part presents different versions of this parameter defined by the normal parameters. Then, it presents versions defined through the tangent parameter and the most promising parameter defined through the tangent and normal parameters. It was noted that the final form of the equivalent value is defined either by stress or by an energy parameter. Therefore, the possible characteristics from which the fatigue life can be determined are also presented.

RESUMEN

In this paper, a novel implementation of the Lattice Discrete Element Method (LDEM) is proposed: in particular, the LDEM is implemented in the Ansys LS-DYNA finite element code. Such an implementation is employed to evaluate the fracture behaviour of sandwich panels under bending. First, the novel hybrid model proposed is validated by simulating some three-point bending experimental tests carried out at the University of Parma, and then it is used to model the fracture behaviour of sandwich panels under four-point bending. Failure mechanisms, damage locations, and load-deflection curves are numerically determined by employing such a novel model, and the results show a good agreement with the available experimental findings.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present work is to extend the two-phase local/nonlocal stress-driven integral model (SDM) to the case of nanobeams with internal discontinuities: as a matter of fact, the original formulation avoids the presence of any discontinuities. Consequently, here, for the first time, the problem of an internal discontinuity is addressed by using a convex combination of both local and nonlocal phases of the model by introducing a mixture parameter. The novel formulation here proposed was validated by considering six case studies involving different uncracked nanobeams by varying the constrains and the loading configurations, and the effect of nonlocality on the displacement field is discussed. Moreover, a centrally-cracked nanobeam, subjected to concentrated forces at the crack half-length, was studied. The size-dependent Mode I fracture behaviour of the cracked nanobeam was analysed in terms of crack opening displacement, energy release rate, and stress intensity factor, showing the strong dependency of the above fracture properties on both dimensionless characteristic length and mixture parameter values.

RESUMEN

The present paper is dedicated to the theoretical evaluation of a loading feature, that may have a significant influence on fatigue phenomenon: non-proportionality. As a matter of fact, considerable interactions between dislocations, leading to the formation of dislocation cells, cause additional cyclic hardening of material. Such a phenomenon is experimentally observed for materials sensitive to non-proportionality. In such a context, the present paper is aimed to propose a novel multiaxial strain-based criterion, the refined equivalent deformation (RED) criterion, which allows to take into account, in fatigue life estimation, both strain amplitude and additional cyclic hardening. The accuracy of the novel criterion is evaluated by considering experimental tests, performed on Ti-6Al-4V specimens, subjected to multiaxial LCF loading.
