BACKGROUND: There is a lack of studies investigating death anxiety among the oldest old based on a large, nationally representative sample during the pandemic. Thus, our aim was to investigate the prevalence and determinants of death anxiety among the oldest old in Germany during the Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS: Cross-sectional data were taken from the 'Old Age in Germany' (D80+) study. This is a large, nationwide representative study including individuals 80 years and over living at home and individuals in institutionalised settings (N = 9542 individuals in the analytic sample). RESULTS: Overall, 30% of the respondents reported the absence of death anxiety, 45.5% reported a rather not strong death anxiety, 20.2% reported a rather strong death anxiety, and 4.3% reported a very strong death anxiety. Linear regressions revealed that higher death anxiety was significantly associated with being female (ß = 0.21, P < 0.01), younger age (ß = -0.02, P < 0.001), being married (ß = 0.09, P < 0.001), high education (compared to low education, ß = 0.07, P < 0.05), the presence of meaning in life (ß = 0.13, P < 0.001), higher loneliness levels (ß = 0.18, P < 0.001), the presence of multimorbidity (ß = 0.07, P < 0.05), and poorer self-rated health (ß = -0.07, P < 0.001). A further analysis showed that probable depression (ß = 0.31, P < 0.001) is also associated with higher death anxiety. CONCLUSION: About one in four individuals had a strong or very strong fear of death during the pandemic. Several sociodemographic, psychosocial, and health-related factors are associated with higher death anxiety. This better understanding of the determinants of death anxiety can be relevant for, among others, the affected individuals, informal and professional carers, as well as friends and relatives.

BACKGROUND: Age-related loss of skeletal muscle strength and mass is linked to adverse postoperative outcomes in older individuals with sarcopenia. Half of patients suffer from severe associated osteoarthritis requiring orthopedic interventions. Mitigating the onset and progression of sarcopenia before surgery is essential to improve the prognosis and reduce surgical complications. The aim of this research was to innovatively explore whether the preoperative period could be the appropriate timeframe to empower surgical resilience, through prehabilitation and dietary supplementation, in older sarcopenic patients undergoing knee arthroplasty. METHODS: The current literature concerning the effectiveness of prehabilitation and dietary supplementation before knee arthroplasty in sarcopenic older individuals was reviewed, following the SANRA criteria, between December 2023 and February 2024. The study inclusion criteria were as follows: (1) prehabilitation and/or dietary supplementation interventions; (2) human participants aged 65 years and older; (3) relevant outcome reporting (functional status, postoperative complications, and patient-reported outcomes); and (4) articles written in English The extracted information included study characteristics, demographics, intervention details, outcomes, and the main findings. RESULTS: Merged prehabilitation and dietary supplementation strategies extrapolated from the current literature and involving strength, resistance, balance, and flexibility training, as well as essential amino acids, iron, vitamin D, adenosine triphosphate, and glucosamine sulphate supplementation, could improve the functional capacity, ability to withstand the upcoming surgical stressors, and postoperative outcomes in older people undergoing knee arthroplasty. CONCLUSIONS: Addressing complex links between knee osteoarthritis and sarcopenia in older individuals undergoing knee arthroplasty requires a multidimensional approach. Prehabilitation emerges as a crucial preliminary step, allowing the optimization of surgical outcomes. Nutraceutical integration, included in a comprehensive care plan, could have a synergic effect in achieving prehabilitation goals. Those interventions are essential for surgical resilience, in terms of muscle function preservation, recovery acceleration, and overall quality of life enhancement. Intensive collaboration among specialists could advance knowledge and the sharable consensus concerning the critical and evolutive field of perioperative care.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between perception of one's social environment (in terms of residential attachment and neighborhood trust) and loneliness among the oldest old and whether these associations differ by living arrangement. METHODS: We used data from the nationally representative "Old Age in Germany (D80+)" study that included individuals residing in private households and institutionalized settings. The analytic sample was 9,621 individuals (average age: 85.5 years, SD: 4.1 years; 62% female). Data collection took place from November 2020 to April 2021. Multiple linear regressions were conducted with adjustment for relevant covariates. RESULTS: Higher residential attachment (ß=-0.02, p < .05) and higher neighborhood trust (ß=-0.12, p < .001) were associated with less loneliness. The latter association was moderated by living arrangement (ß=-0.09, p = .04) such that the association between neighborhood trust and loneliness was stronger among individuals living in institutionalized settings compared to individuals in private households. CONCLUSION: Greater residential attachment and neighborhood trust, particularly among individuals living in institutionalized settings, are associated with less loneliness among the oldest old. Finding ways to improve perceived attachment and trust may assist in avoiding loneliness among older individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Heart failure (HF) is one of the most common cardiovascular disorders, and its prevalence is increased due to age, genetics, and lifestyle factors. Emerging evidence suggests that the Mediterranean Diet (Med Diet) is linked to lower all-cause mortality in patients with increased cardiovascular disease risk, such as those with HF. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies into the relationship between the Med Diet on HF risk. DESIGN: Several databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library) until the 01st of May 2023 were searched. Our research was conducted based on the updated 2020 Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Data were reported as risk ratios (RRs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as results of multivariate or univariate analyses. RESULTS: From the original 1206 studies collected, six observational prospective studies were included, with a total of 216,385 European participants without evidence of HF at baseline. Over a mean period of 11 years of follow-up, a 1-point increase in the Med Diet score was associated with a significantly lower risk of HF (RR = 0.940; 95% CI: 0.912-0.969, p < 0.0001; I2 = 42.9%). Categorised by sex, a higher adherence to Med Diet was associated with a significantly lower incidence of HF in women (RR = 0.942; 95% CI: 0.912-0.973, p = 0.001; I2 = 41.8%), but not in men. The overall quality of included studies was good. CONCLUSIONS: Higher adherence to Med Diet across European countries is associated with lower risk of HF, particularly in women.

Due to the continuous aging of the population and consequent increase in dementia, focus on its prevention is of growing importance for public health. Since effective pharmacological treatments are not yet available, other determinants of cognitive decline have become fundamental. Several studies have indicated that the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) is associated with reduced incident cognitive decline and dementia, but few studies have been conducted in persons already diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease (AD). We age-matched 73 patients with mild-moderate AD with 73 controls (mean age for the whole group = 76.5 ± 6.5; 67.5% women). The cases had a significantly lower adherence to the MedDiet and lower physical activity vs. controls, where only one participant (1.4%) had a high adherence to the MedDiet among cases compared to 5.5% among controls, while 52.5% of the cases had a moderate adherence to the MedDiet vs. 82.2% in controls. In multivariate analysis, only the presence of AD was significantly associated with a lower adherence to the MedDiet vs. controls. Other factors examined (gender, age, physical activity level, multimorbidity, and polypharmacy) were not significantly associated with adherence to the MedDiet. Thus, AD patients had a low adherence to the MedDiet and very low physical activity. Public health strategies aimed at promoting the Mediterranean diet and physical activity for older people should be a priority.

Population ageing is a global occurrence. Unfortunately, the shortage of health professionals with geriatric competencies is a major factor restricting high-quality care for older people worldwide. Strengthening the knowledge and skills of the health workforce to better respond to the needs of older people is a major global priority. Geriatricians can play a pivotal role in reorienting care for older people towards an integrated and person-centred care system focused on functional ability, preventive strategies, and age-friendly services. The current scenario requires efforts to be directed towards establishing a standardised competency-based definition of a geriatrician to allow for an accurate estimation of the existing workforce with adequate training in geriatrics as crucial resources to facilitate the paradigm shift. This Personal View, supported by the International Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics and the European Geriatric Medicine Society, proposes a standardised definition of a geriatrician based on expected competencies and roles and a precise description of the essential features of geriatric medicine. By reducing ambiguities and offering a competency-based framework, the current standardisation approach is expected to facilitate better support, monitoring, and allocation of resources for improving care for older people worldwide.

BACKGROUND: Dynapenic abdominal obesity (DAO) may be associated with an increased risk of disability. However, to date, this has not been investigated in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), while the mediators are largely unknown. AIMS: Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association between DAO and activities of daily living (ADL) disability, and to identify potential mediators among older adults from six LMICs. METHODS: Cross-sectional, nationally representative data from the WHO Study on global AGEing and adult health were analyzed. Data on 20,198 adults aged ≥ 60 years were analyzed [mean (SD) age 69.3 (13.1) years; 54.1% females]. Dynapenia was defined as handgrip strength of < 26 kg for men and < 16 kg for women. Abdominal obesity was defined as waist circumference of > 88 cm for women and > 102 cm for men. DAO was defined as having both dynapenia and abdominal obesity. Disability was defined as severe or extreme difficulty in conducting at least one of six types of ADL. Multivariable logistic regression and mediation analysis were conducted. RESULTS: Compared to no dynapenia and no abdominal obesity, DAO was significantly associated with 2.08 (95%CI = 1.37-3.17) times higher odds for ADL disability Mediation analysis showed that diabetes (mediated percentage 4.7%), hypertension (7.2%), and angina (7.7%) were significant mediators in the association between DAO and ADL disability. CONCLUSIONS: DAO was associated with increased odds for ADL disability among older adults from LMICs. Future longitudinal studies are warranted to assess temporal associations, and whether addressing or preventing DAO can impact on future occurrence of disability.

To the Editors, We recently published evidence-based guidelines for the role of exercise in the prevention of dementia.1 The guidelines combined an umbrella review and expert consensus, and has important implications for psychiatry. Evidence from published studies was evaluated using the GRADE assessment. We found scarce and relatively low-quality evidence in the literature, particularly for the primary prevention of dementia. Our GRADE-informed evidence synthesis yielded the following conclusions: For Primary prevention of dementia: Physical activity may be considered for the primary prevention of dementia. In people without dementia or MCI, exercise may be no better than health education for the primary prevention of dementia and MCI. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: Very low for physical activity; very low for exercise. For Secondary prevention of dementia: In people with MCI there is continued uncertainty about the role of physical activity and exercise in slowing the conversion to dementia. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: Very low for physical activity; very low for exercise. For Tertiary prevention of dementia: In people with moderate dementia, physical activity/exercise could be considered for maintaining cognition and exercise could be considered for stabilizing disability compared to usual care. QUALITY OF EVIDENCE: Exercise: very low for cognitive outcomes; low for disability. Following a consensus process, we recommended physical activity/exercise for all three purposes, namely primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention (improve cognition and reduce disability) of dementia. The recommendation of exercise was largely contingent on its positive effects on mental health,2,3 in conjunction with the extensive body of evidence linking mental disorder with dementia.4 The guidelines highlight the need for further research on multidisciplinary interventions for both the primary and secondary prevention of dementia. A question remains whether the positive effect of physical activity on mood/behaviour applies to the MCI group, as it does to the dementia group. More research is required in people with established dementia and in less common forms of dementia. The guidelines also make an implicit research recommendation in support of heurism, in the sense that they integrate the evidence-based expectation that exercise is likely to be beneficial both for mental and physical health. Indeed, employing heurism may be inherently necessary in prevention research.5 Overall, these guidelines offer an evidence-based insight into the effectiveness of physical activity/exercise for the prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) of dementia. Importantly, they necessitate the inclusion of mental health in a multi-component approach. In doing so, they emphasize the necessity of mental health promotion and mental illness prevention in the prevention and management of dementia.

BACKGROUND: Multicomponent interventions based on a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) could promote active aging and improve health status in older people with Noncommunicable Chronic Diseases (NCDs), but conflicting evidences are available. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of a CGA-based multicomponent personalized preventive program (PPP) in reducing unplanned hospitalization rates during 12-month follow-up in community-dwelling older people with NCDs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this randomized clinical trial (RCT), 1216 older adults recruited by 33 general practitioners (GPs) will be randomly allocated to intervention group (IG) or usual care control group (CG). The IG will receive a multicomponent PPP developed on the findings of the CGA-based Multidimensional Prognostic Index short-form (Brief-MPI), including structured interventions to improve functional, physical, cognitive, and nutritional status, to monitor NCDs and vaccinations, and to prevent social isolation. Participants in the CG will receive usual care. Brief-MPI, resilience, and health-related quality of life will be assessed after 6 and 12 months. Moreover, saliva samples will be collected at baseline in IG to measure biomarkers of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, and oral microbiome. EXPECTED RESULTS: The CGA-based PPP might reduce unplanned hospitalization rates and potentially institutionalization rates, emergency department (ED) and unplanned GP visits, and mortality. Further outcomes explored in the IG will be the adherence to PPP, resilience, health-related quality of life, and multidimensional frailty as assessed by the Brief-MPI. CONCLUSIONS: Results will suggest whether the CGA-based multicomponent PPP is able to improve specific outcomes in a primary care setting. Food insecurity, characterized by inadequate access to sufficient and nutritious food, poses a significant challenge to the health and well-being of older adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis was aimed to examine the association between food insecurity and body mass index (BMI) in older people, i.e., aging 60 and above. PRISMA 2020 guidelines were followed. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO in advance (ID CRD 42024543271). PubMed/MEDLINE, and Scopus were searched up to February 2024. Out of 5834 retrieved article, a total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing diverse geographic regions and socioeconomic contexts. The meta-analysis revealed a significant association between food insecurity and higher BMI (both obesity and overweight) in older adults. Pooled estimates indicated that food-insecure older individuals were more likely to be overweight or obese (combined) compared to their food-secure counterparts [OR= 1.29 (95% CI= 1.28-1.30), p<0.001; I2= 94.92]. Results were also confirmed for overweight or obesity alone. Notably, food insecurity was linked to increased consumption of energy-dense, nutrient-poor foods, contributing to higher BMI. These findings underscore the complex relationship between food insecurity and BMI among older adults, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address food access and nutritional quality.

Bone forming agents, also known as anabolic therapies, are essential in managing osteoporosis, particularly for patients at very high-risk of fractures. Identifying candidates who will benefit the most from these treatments is crucial. For example, this group might include individuals with severe osteoporosis, multiple vertebral fractures, a recent fragility fracture or those unresponsive to antiresorptive treatments. Definitions of patients with a very high fracture risk vary across nations, are often based on fracture history, bone mineral density (BMD), and/or fracture risk calculated by FRAX® or other algorithms. However, for very high-risk patients, anabolic agents such as teriparatide, abaloparatide, or romosozumab are commonly recommended as first-line therapies due to their ability to stimulate new bone formation and improve bone microarchitecture, offering significant benefits in rapid fracture reduction over antiresorptive therapies. The cost-effectiveness of these agents is a critical consideration for decision-makers. Despite their higher costs, their effectiveness in significantly reducing fracture risk and improving quality of life can justify the investment, especially when long-term savings from reduced fracture rates and associated healthcare costs are considered. Additionally, after completing a course of anabolic therapy, transitioning to antiresorptive agents like bisphosphonates or denosumab is crucial to maintain the gains in bone density and minimize subsequent fracture risks. This sequential treatment approach ensures sustained protection and optimal resource utilization. In summary, the effective use of bone forming agents in osteoporosis requires a comprehensive strategy that includes accurate patient identification, consideration of cost-effectiveness, and implementation of appropriate sequential treatments, ultimately maximizing patient outcomes and healthcare efficiency.

BACKGROUND: The role of main work during the life course in predicting frailty, a typical geriatric syndrome, is still largely unknown. Therefore, with this research, we aimed to investigate the potential association between the main work done during the life with frailty and pre-frailty among participants 60 years and older of the UK Biobank study. METHODS: Frailty and pre-frailty presence were ascertained using a model including 5 indicators (weakness, slowness, weight loss, low physical activity, and exhaustion); the main employment status was ascertained using self-reported information. The association between frailty and main work was explored using an ordinal logistic regression model and reported as odds ratios (ORs) with their 95 % confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: The final sample comprised a total of 50,447 individuals (mean age: 64.2 years, females: 50.2 %). Individuals with higher qualifications had a reduced risk of frailty (OR = 0.881, 95%CI = 0.83-0.95, p-value<0.001 for pre-frail and OR = 0.681, 95%CI = 0.63-0.73, p-value<0.001 for frail) compared to those with lower qualifications. Moreover, active participation in the workforce, compared to being inactive, emerged as a protective factor from frailty (OR = 0.753, 95%CI = 0.70-0.81, p-value<0.001). The categories of Associate Professional and Technical Occupations exhibited protective effects against both pre-frailty and frailty. Similarly, occupations categorized as Professional and Management demonstrated protective effects against pre-frailty and frailty when compared to Elementary Occupations. Additionally, engagement in Trades and Services occupations, as opposed to Elementary Occupations, appeared to be protective against frailty. CONCLUSIONS: In this large cross-sectional investigation based on the data of the UK Biobank we found that work during lifetime could be an important factor in determining frailty later in life.

People with diabetes are at higher risk of serious complications from many vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs). Some studies have highlighted the potential impact of glycosylated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c), but no systematic review has synthesized these findings. Of the 823 identified studies, 3 were included, for a total of 705,349 participants. Regarding the incidence of herpes zoster (HZ), one study found that higher HbA1c levels at the baseline (>10.3%) were associated with a significantly higher risk of HZ of 44%, compared to those with a good HbA1c control (6.7%). On the contrary, the second one reported that when compared to the reference group (HbA1c of 5.0-6.4%), participants with a HbA1c less than 5.0% were at higher risk of HZ of 63%, whilst participants with a HBA1c more than 9.5% had a similar risk. Finally, the third study observed that diabetes, defined using a value of HbA1c more than 7.5%, was associated with an increased risk of mortality in men with COVID-19. In conclusion, both high and low HBA1c levels appear to be associated with a higher risk of HZ. Regarding COVID-19, a value of HbA1c more than 7.5% was associated with a higher risk of death in COVID-19, but only in men.

Vaccine-associated rheumatic diseases are rare but one of the most feared adverse drug reactions (ADRs). However, this topic has been investigated less with large-scale data in the literature. With the rapid progress in the development and approval of vaccines during the pandemic, public concerns regarding their safety have been raised. To assess the global and regional burden, long-term trends, and potential risk factors of vaccines-associated six types of rheumatic diseases (ankylosing spondylitis [AS], polymyalgia rheumatica [PMR], rheumatoid arthritis [RA], Sjögren's syndrome, Systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], Systemic scleroderma), this study conducted disproportionality analysis based on the reports from the World Health Organization International Pharmacovigilance Database documented between 1967 and 2023 (n for total reports = 131 255 418) across 156 countries and territories. We estimated the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) to determine the disproportionality signal for rheumatic diseases. Of 198 046 reports of all-cause rheumatic diseases, 14 703 reports of vaccine-associated rheumatic diseases were identified. While the reporting counts have gradually increased over time globally, we observed a dramatic increase in reporting counts after 2020, potentially due to a large portion of reports of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine-associated rheumatic diseases. The disproportionality signal for rheumatic diseases was most pronounced in HBV vaccines (ROR, 4.11; IC025, 1.90), followed by COVID-19 mRNA (ROR, 2.79; IC025, 1.25), anthrax (ROR, 2.52; IC025, 0.76), papillomavirus (ROR, 2.16; IC025, 0.95), encephalitis (ROR, 2.01; IC025, 0.58), typhoid (ROR, 1.91; IC025, 0.44), influenza (ROR, 1.49; IC025, 0.46), and HAV vaccines (ROR, 1.41; IC025, 0.20). From age- and sex-specific perspective, young females and old males are likely to have vaccine-associated rheumatic disease reports. Furthermore, overall vaccines showed a disproportionality signal for PMR (IC025, 3.13) and Sjögren's syndrome (IC025, 0.70), systemic scleroderma (IC025, 0.64), specifically while the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are associated with all six types of diseases. Although multiple vaccines are associated with rheumatic disease reports, healthcare providers should be aware of the potential of autoimmune manifestations following vaccination, particularly the COVID-19 mRNA and HBV vaccines, and take into account for risk factors associated with these ADRs. Most ADRs exhibited an average time to onset of 11 days, underscoring the significance of monitoring and timely management by clinicians.

We investigated the association between sedentary behavior (SB) and wish to die (WTD; i.e., feeling that one would be better off dead or wishing for one's own death), and the extent to which this can be explained by sleep problems, depression, anxiety, loneliness, perceived stress, and social network in a nationally representative sample of adults aged ≥50 years from Ireland. Cross-sectional data from Wave 1 of the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing 2009-2011 were analyzed. WTD was defined as answering affirmatively to the question "In the last month, have you felt that you would rather be dead?" SB was used as a continuous variable (hours/day), and also as a categorical (< or ≥8 h/day) variable. Multivariable logistic regression and mediation analyses were conducted. Data on 8163 adults aged ≥50 years were analyzed [mean (SD) age 63.6 (9.1) years; 48.0% males]. Overall, ≥8 (vs. <8) hours/day of SB was associated with a significant 2.04 (95%CI = 1.50-2.76) times higher odds for WTD, while a 1-h increase in SB per day was associated with 1.11 (95%CI = 1.06-1.16) times higher odds for WTD. Mediation analysis showed that sleep problems, depression, loneliness, perceived stress, and social network explained a modest proportion of the association between SB and WTD (mediated percentage 9.3%-14.8%). The present cross-sectional study found that increasing or higher levels of SB is positively associated with WTD. Addressing the identified potential mediators may reduce WTD among people who are sedentary. However, future longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to make concrete recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: Recurrent falls are observed frequently among older people, and they are responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of the present study was to verify sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management (WGFPM) falls risk stratification algorithm using data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative (OAI). METHODS: Participants aged between 40 and 80 years were stratified as 'low risk', 'intermediate risk' or 'high risk' as per WGFPM stratification. Data from the OAI cohort study were used, a multi-centre, longitudinal, observational study focusing primarily on knee osteoarthritis. The assessment of the outcome was carried out at baseline and during the follow-up visit at 24 months. Data about sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were reported. RESULTS: Totally, 4796 participants were initially included. Participants were aged a mean of 61.4 years (SD = 9.1) and were predominantly women (58.0%). The population was divided into three groups: low risk (n = 3266; 82%), intermediate risk (n = 25; 0.6%) and high risk (n = 690; 17.3%). WGFPM algorithm applied to OAI, excluding the intermediate-risk group, produced a sensitivity score of 33.7% and specificity of 89.9% for predicting one or more falls, with an accuracy of 72.4%. CONCLUSION: In our study, WGFPM risk assessment algorithm successfully distinguished older people at greater risk of falling using the opportunistic case finding method with a good specificity, but limited sensitivity, of WGFPM falls risk stratification algorithm.

Vaccination, particularly against pneumococcus and influenza, is a low-cost primary prevention, useful to avoid hard complications, particularly among frail older people. In this pilot study, we aimed to assess the effect of a strategy for influenza and pneumococcal vaccination for outpatients mainly affected by cognitive or endocrinological conditions, evaluating what could stimulate or demotivate vaccination among older people. This study was conducted during the 2023-2024 influenza season at the outpatient clinics in Palermo, Italy. A total 76 patients were included. More than half of the patients could be considered as pre-frail and about 20% frail, according to a comprehensive geriatric evaluation. Among patients, 46.05% received only vaccination against pneumococcus, 28.95% both vaccinations, and 25.0% only against influenza. Compared with the previous seasons, a 19.5% increase of influenza and 90.2% of pneumococcal vaccine uptake was observed. Side effects of vaccination were the main reason of the previous rejection, namely 76.9% for influenza and 53.8% for anti-pneumococcal vaccination. In conclusion, our study indicates how a new vaccination strategy in different settings could be feasible. Proposing influenza and pneumococcal vaccination for frail older outpatients could be an effective instrument to improve immunization coverage that is still low among older people.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between pet ownership and psychosocial outcomes among the oldest old in Germany during the Covid-19 pandemic. METHODS/DESIGN: Data from the "Old Age in Germany (D80+)" study were used, a large, nationwide representative study covering both individuals living at home and individuals in nursing homes aged 80 years and above (n = 2867 individuals). The telephone interviews were conducted from May to October 2021. Established tools (e.g., "Short Form of the Depression in Old Age Scale", DIA-S4) were used to quantify the outcomes. Five groups were generated: (1) no pet ownership, (2) having at least one dog (but no other pets), (3) having at least one cat (but no other pets), (4) having at least one other pet (but neither dogs nor cats), (5) having at least two different types of pets (in any combination). RESULTS: Multiple linear regressions showed that compared to individuals without a pet, individuals having at least one dog had significantly lower loneliness levels (ß = -0.21, p < 0.01). In the fully-adjusted models, other forms of pet ownership were not significantly associated with the outcomes examined. CONCLUSION: Particularly living with a dog was associated with lower loneliness among the oldest old people in Germany. If living with a dog is in line with the preferences and attitudes of the very old, this could be a strategy for reducing loneliness in this age group.
