RESUMEN

This work shows the potential of a new way of co-treatment of domestic wastewater (DWW) and a liquid stream coming from the thermal hydrolysis of the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) mediated by a mixed culture of purple phototrophic bacteria (PPB) capable of assimilating carbon and nutrients from the medium. The biological system is an open single-step process operated under microaerophilic conditions at an oxidative reduction potential (ORP) < 0 mV with a photoperiod of 12/24 h and fed during the light stage only so the results can be extrapolated to outdoor open pond operations by monitoring the ORP. The effluent mostly complies with the discharge values of the Spanish legislation in COD and p-values (<125 mg/L; <2 mg/L), respectively, and punctually on values in N (<15 mg/L). Applying an HRT of 3 d and a ratio of 100:7 (COD:N), the presence of PPB in the mixed culture surpassed 50% of 16S rRNA gene copies, removing 78% of COD, 53% of N, and 66% of P. Furthermore, by increasing the HRT to 5 d, removal efficiencies of 83% of COD, 65% of N, and 91% of P were achieved. In addition, the reactors were further operated in a membrane bioreactor, thus separating the HRT from the SRT to increase the specific loading rate. Very satisfactory removal efficiencies were achieved by applying an HRT and SRT of 2.3 and 3 d, respectively: 84% of COD, 49% of N, and 93% of P despite the low presence of PPB due to more oxidative conditions, which step-by-step re-colonized the mixed culture until reaching >20% of 16S rRNA gene copies after 49 d of operation. These results open the door to scaling up the process in open photobioreactors capable of treating urban wastewater and municipal solid waste in a single stage and under microaerophilic conditions by controlling the ORP of the system.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the endothelial cell loss in patients with iris-claw phakic lenses (Artisan®) in a long-term follow-up. METHODS: We analyzed the medical records of patients who had undergone iris-claw phakic lens implantation and who had at least 5 years of follow-up. RESULTS: We included 67 eyes with myopic errors (follow-up 9.6 ± 3.0 years) and 10 eyes with mixed astigmatism or hyperopic errors (follow-up 8.8 ± 2.5 years). The mean total endothelial density loss at the last follow-up visit was 18.5% ± 17.0% and 10.5% ± 12.3%, respectively. 29.9% of the eyes in the myopic group and 20% in the hyperopic group lost more than 25% of the preoperative endothelial cell density. During the postoperative follow-up period, 60.8% of the eyes in the myopic group and 40% of the eyes in the hyperopic group lost a higher percentage than the expected physiological loss. Two eyes in the myopic group (3.0%) had a final cell density of less than 1200 cells/mm2. None of the variables studied had a statistically significant association with the percentage of annual endothelial loss in the postoperative period. Three phakic lenses were explanted: two by cataract and one by cataract and severe decrease of the endothelial density (862 cells/mm2). CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant endothelial cell loss in a low percentage of the eyes with Artisan® lenses in the long term, and it can decrease to critical levels. Periodic endothelial density evaluations are required for these patients. The selection criteria of surgical candidates could be reevaluated.

RESUMEN

The mesophilic anaerobic co-digestion of the liquid fraction from hydrothermal carbonization (LFHTC) of dewatered waste activated sludge with primary sewage sludge (PSS) has been studied. Mixtures of different composition (25, 50 and 75% of LFHTC on a chemical oxygen demand (COD) basis), as well as the individual substrates, have been tested using two inocula (flocculent (FS) and granular (GS) sludges). Methane production decreased as the LFHTC/PSS ratio increased, which can be related to the presence of recalcitrant compounds in the LFHTC, such as alkenes, phenolics, and other oxygen- and nitrogen-bearing aromatics hard-to-degrade through anaerobic digestion. Methane yield reached 248 ±â€¯11 mL CH4 STP/g CODadded with the GS inoculum and 25% LFHTC. A 74 and a 30% increase of methane production was achieved in the 25% LFHTC runs respect to the obtained in the similar experiments with 100% LFHTC, using the FS and GS inocula, respectively. In those late runs, the COD was reduced more than 86%, with a negligible concentration of total volatile fatty acids. With both inocula, total Kjeldahl nitrogen hydrolysis increased as the LFHTC to PSS mixture ratio decreased, reaching values higher than 79% at the end of the experiments. Methane yield values fitted well the first-order, Cone and Weibull kinetic models for both inocula. Significant differences in the kinetic constant values, ranging from 0.100 to 0.168 d-1 and 0.059-0.068 d-1, were found with the FS and GS inocula, respectively. The results obtained support the potential integration of HTC of dewatered waste activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: To report the clinical, electrophysiological and the anatomical findings in a patient with Kearns-Sayre syndrome (KSS). CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 55-year-old female with KSS, who developed systemic features and ocular manifestations as ophthalmoplegia and retinal dysfunction, that were corroborated by electrophysiological test and High Definition Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (HD SD OCT) and OCT-Angiography (OCT-A). CONCLUSION: We report a patient with KSS, accompanied by some alterations of the RPE and photoreceptors observed in the external HD SD OCT and OCT-A. In the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in the literature of HD SD OCT findings in a patient with KSS.
