RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Growing evidence suggests that elective induction of labor at 39 weeks may lead to more favorable perinatal outcomes compared with the expectant management, however, how to weigh the pros and cons of elective labor induction at 39 weeks, the expectation of spontaneous delivery at 40 or 41 weeks, or delayed labor induction at 40 or 41 weeks on neonatal and maternal outcomes remains a practical challenge in clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVE: We compared neonatal and maternal outcomes between elective induction of labor at 39 weeks and expectant management in a real word setting. We also divided the expectantly managed group and compared outcomes between the spontaneous delivery group at 40 or 41 weeks, and the induced group at 40 or 41 weeks versus the elective induced group at 39 weeks. STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study included 21282 participants between January 1, 2019, and June 30, 2022. Participants were initially categorized into three groups at 39 weeks: elective induction of labor, spontaneous delivery, and expectant management, for the primary analysis comparing elective induction with expectant management. Subsequently, the expectant management group at 39 weeks was similarly divided into three groups at 40 weeks, and participants who underwent expectant management at 40 weeks were then divided into two groups at 41 weeks: elective induction and spontaneous delivery. In total, six groups were compared in the secondary analysis, with elective induction at 39 weeks serving as the reference group. RESULTS: At 39 weeks' gestational age, participants who received elective induction of labor had a significantly lower risk of primary composite outcomes compared to participants who received expectant management (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 0.72, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.55-0.95), and there was no significant difference in risk of cesarean delivery between the two groups. After further dividing the expectantly managed group, compared to participants with elective induction of labor at 39 weeks, those with spontaneous delivery at 40 weeks had significant lower risks of cesarean delivery (0.61, 0.52-0.71) and chorioamnionitis (0.78, 0.61-1.00), but a higher risk of fetal distress (1.39, 1.22-1.57); those with spontaneous delivery at 41 weeks had a significant higher risk of fetal distress (1.44, 1.16-1.79), postpartum hemorrhage (1.83, 1.26-2.66), and prolonged/arrested labor (1.61, 1.02-2.54). Moreover, compared to participants with elective induction of labor at 39 weeks, participants induced at later weeks had significantly higher risks of neonatal and maternal outcomes, especially at 40 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that elective induction of labor at 39 weeks was significantly associated with lower risks of short-term neonatal and maternal outcomes compared to expectant management. Moreover, our study highlights the nuanced trade-offs in risks and benefits between elective induction at 39 weeks versus waiting for spontaneous labor or delayed induction at 40/41 weeks, thus providing valuable insights for clinical decision-making in practice.

RESUMEN

Aquatic plants are a crucial component of the aquatic ecosystem in the Tibetan Plateau region. Researching the adaptability of plateau aquatic plants in photosynthesis to the plateau environment can enhance understanding of the operational mechanisms of plateau ecosystems, thereby providing a scientific basis for the protection and management of plateau aquatic ecosystems. This study presents an investigation of photosynthetic inorganic carbon utilization strategies and photosynthetic efficiency of 17 aquatic plants under natural growing conditions in Niyang River basin on the Tibetan Plateau. In pH-drift experiments, 10 of 17 species were able to utilize HCO3-, and environmental factors like water pH were shown to have a significant effect on the ability of the tested species to utilize HCO3-. Titratable acidity in the leaves of Stuckenia filiformis, Zannichellia palustris, Batrachium bungei, and Myriophyllum spicatum showed significant diurnal fluctuations at certain sampling sites, indicating the presence of CAM. In B. bungei, water pH positively correlated with CAM activity, while CO2 concentration negatively correlated with CAM activity. The chlorophyll fluorescence analysis revealed that aquatic plants inhabiting the Tibetan Plateau exhibited photosynthetic adaptations. In conclusion, the aquatic plants on the Tibetan Plateau employ diverse strategies for utilizing inorganic carbon during photosynthesis, exhibiting their flexible adaptability to the native high-altitude habitats of the Tibetan Plateau.

RESUMEN

Pentavalent rotavirus vaccine (RV5) coverage and changes in rotavirus detection in the prevaccine and postvaccine era in Chengdu were investigated. The results showed that the coverage of RV5 had been increasing but still relatively low. Nevertheless, the dramatical decline in the rotavirus detection was observed after the introduction of RV5. Efforts to improve the coverage of rotavirus vaccination should continue to maximize the public health benefits.

RESUMEN

The metabolic state of bacteria significantly contributes to their resistance to antibiotics; however, the specific metabolic mechanisms conferring antimicrobial resistance in Helicobacter pylori remain largely understudied. Employing transcriptomic and non-targeted metabolomics, we characterized the metabolic reprogramming of H. pylori when challenged with antibiotic agents. We observed a notable increase in both genetic and key proteomic components involved in fatty acid biosynthesis. Inhibition of this pathway significantly enhanced the antibiotic susceptibility of the sensitive and multidrug-resistant H. pylori strains while also disrupting their biofilm-forming capacities. Further analysis revealed that antibiotic treatment induced a stringent response, triggering the expression of the hp0560-hp0557 operon regulated by Sigma28 (σ28). This activation in turn stimulated the fatty acid biosynthetic pathway, thereby enhancing the antibiotic tolerance of H. pylori. Our findings reveal a novel adaptive strategy employed by H. pylori to withstand antibiotic stress.

RESUMEN

In order to investigate the effect of glucono-δ-lactone (GDL) and different salt ions (Na+ and Ca2+) induction on the cold-set gels of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-arabinoxylan (AX), the gel properties and structure of BSA-AX cold-set gels were evaluated by analyzing the gel strength, water-holding capacity, thermal properties, and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. It was shown that the best gel strength (109.15 g) was obtained when the ratio of BSA to AX was 15:1. The addition of 1 % GDL significantly improved the water-holding capacity, gel strength and thermal stability of the cold-set gels (p < 0.05), and the microstructure was smoother. Low concentrations of Na+ (3 mM) and Ca2+ (6 mM) significantly enhanced the hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding between BSA and AX after acid induction, and the Na+-induced formation of a denser microstructure with a higher water-holding capacity (75.51 %). However, the excess salt ions disrupted the stable network structure of the cold-set gels and reduced their thermal stability and crystalline structure. The results of this study contribute to the understanding of the interactions between BSA and AX induced by GDL and salt ions, and provide a basis for designing hydrogels with different properties.

RESUMEN

Implantable neural devices that record neurons in various states, including static states, light activities such as walking, and vigorous activities such as running, offer opportunities for understanding brain functions and dysfunctions. However, recording neurons under vigorous activities remains a long-standing challenge because it leads to intense brain deformation. Thus, three key requirements are needed simultaneously for neural devices, that is, low modulus, low specific interfacial impedance, and high electrical conductivity, to realize stable device/brain interfaces and high-quality transmission of neural signals. However, they always contradict each other in current material strategies. Here, a soft fiber neural device capable of stably tracking individual neurons in the deep brain of medium-sized animals under vigorous activity is reported. Inspired by the axon architecture, this fiber neural device is constructed with a conductive gel fiber possessing a network-in-liquid structure using conjugated polymers and liquid matrices and then insulated with soft fluorine rubber. This strategy reconciles the contradictions and simultaneously confers the fiber neural device with low modulus (300 kPa), low specific impedance (579 kΩ µm2), and high electrical conductivity (32 700 S m-1) - ≈1-3 times higher than hydrogels. Stable single-unit spike tracking in running cats, which promises new opportunities for neuroscience is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Tenecteplase is an effective thrombolytic agent for eligible patients with stroke who are treated within 4.5 hours after the onset of stroke. However, data regarding the effectiveness of tenecteplase beyond 4.5 hours are limited. METHODS: In a trial conducted in China, we randomly assigned patients with large-vessel occlusion of the middle cerebral artery or internal carotid artery who had salvageable brain tissue as identified on perfusion imaging and who did not have access to endovascular thrombectomy to receive tenecteplase (at a dose of 0.25 mg per kilogram of body weight; maximum dose, 25 mg) or standard medical treatment 4.5 to 24 hours after the time that the patient was last known to be well (including after stroke on awakening and unwitnessed stroke). The primary outcome was the absence of disability, which was defined as a score of 0 or 1 on the modified Rankin scale (range, 0 to 6, with higher scores indicating greater disability), at day 90. The key safety outcomes were symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage and death. RESULTS: A total of 516 patients were enrolled; 264 were randomly assigned to receive tenecteplase and 252 to receive standard medical treatment. Less than 2% of the patients (4 in the tenecteplase group and 5 in the standard-treatment group) underwent rescue endovascular thrombectomy. Treatment with tenecteplase resulted in a higher percentage of patients with a modified Rankin scale score of 0 or 1 at 90 days than standard medical treatment (33.0% vs. 24.2%; relative rate, 1.37; 95% confidence interval, 1.04 to 1.81; P = 0.03). Mortality at 90 days was 13.3% with tenecteplase and 13.1% with standard medical treatment, and the incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage within 36 hours after treatment was 3.0% and 0.8%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: In this trial involving Chinese patients with ischemic stroke due to large-vessel occlusion, most of whom did not undergo endovascular thrombectomy, treatment with tenecteplase administered 4.5 to 24 hours after stroke onset resulted in less disability and similar survival as compared with standard medical treatment, and the incidence of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage appeared to be higher. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The benefit-risk profile of tenecteplase in the elderly patients with acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) is uncertain. We sought to investigate the efficacy and safety of 0.25 mg/kg tenecteplase compared with alteplase for AIS patients aged ≥80 years. METHODS: We performed a post hoc analysis of the Tenecteplase Reperfusion Therapy in Acute Ischaemic Cerebrovascular Events-2 Trial, a randomised, phase 3, non-inferiority clinical trial. Disabling AIS patients aged ≥80 years who initiated intravenous thrombolytics within 4.5 hours of symptom onset were enrolled from June 2021 to May 2022 across 53 centres in China and were randomly allocated to receive 0.25 mg/kg tenecteplase or 0.9 mg/kg alteplase. The primary efficacy outcome was the proportion of participants with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 0-1 at 90 days. Symptomatic intracranial haemorrhage (sICH) within 36 hours was the safety outcome. RESULTS: Of 137 participants, mRS 0-1 at 90 days occurred in 37 (49.3%) of 75 in the tenecteplase group vs 20 (33.9%) of 59 in the alteplase group (risk ratio (RR) 1.47, 95% CI 0.96 to 2.23). sICH within 36 hours was observed in 3 (4.0%) of 76 in the tenecteplase group and two (3.3%) of 61 in the alteplase group (RR 1.30, 95% CI 0.20 to 8.41). CONCLUSIONS: The risk-benefit profile of tenecteplase thrombolysis was preserved in the elderly patients, which lends further support to intravenous 0.25 mg/kg tenecteplase as an alternative to alteplase in these patients.

RESUMEN

Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries with abundant resources and high safety have gained extensive attention in energy storage technology. However, the cycle stability is largely limited by notorious Zn dendrite growth and water-induced interfacial side reactions. Here, a uniform and robust protection layer consisting of metal antimony (Sb) nanoparticles and micrometer-size sheets Zn4(OH)6SO4·5H2O (ZHS) is purposely designed to stabilize Zn anode via an in situ chemical reaction strategy. The two-phase protection layers (Sb/ZHS) induce a reinforcement effect on the Zn anode (Zn@Sb/ZHS). Specifically, Sb nanoparticles play the part of nucleation sites to facilitate uniform Zn plating and homogenize the electric field around the Zn surface. ZHS micrometer-size sheets possess sufficient electrolyte wettability, fast ion transfer kinetics, and anti-corrosion, thus guaranteeing uniform ion flux and inhibiting H2O decomposition. As expected, the symmetric Zn@Sb/ZHS//Zn@Sb/ZHS cells achieve a minimal voltage hysteresis and a reversible cycle of over 2000 h at 1 mA cm-2. By pairing with the MnO2 cathode, the full cell exhibits a significantly improved stability (∼94.17 % initial capacity after 1500 cycles). This study provides a new strategy to design artificial protection layers.

RESUMEN

In the context of sustainable development, it is important to thoroughly investigate the coupling mechanism between China's eco-environmental quality and human activities, as well as identify the influencing factors, in order to provide scientific references for achieving sustainable development goals in China. This study applied trend analysis, coupling coordination degree, LMDI, and optimal parameter geographic detector models to explore and evaluate the coupling mechanism between China's eco-environmental quality and human activities. The findings of the study were as follows:① During the research period, there was a growth trend in China's coupling coordination degree, human activities, and eco-environmental quality. Human activities and coupling coordination degree exhibited a spatial differentiation pattern with the Hu Line as the boundary, showing an "east high, west low" distribution. The eco-environmental quality demonstrated a "south high, north low" differentiation pattern. ② The overall trend of China's coupling coordination type transformation was shifting from lower-level to higher-level coordination types. ③ Based on the geographic detector and LMDI models, the dominant factors influencing the coupling coordination degree in most provinces east of the Hu Line were social and economic factors, as well as the comprehensive coordination index. In contrast, the dominant factors in most provinces west of the Hu Line were natural environmental factors and coupling degree. ④ The evaluation of the impact of changes in human activities on eco-environmental quality revealed that the regions east of the Hu Line were mainly characterized by favorable development and effective protection, whereas the regions west of the line were mainly characterized by destructive development and ineffective protection. It is suggested that the regions on both sides of the Hu Line should prioritize development based on local prerequisites influencing the coupling coordination degree and the relative relationship between human activities and eco-environmental quality. It is crucial to actively adjust development strategies and pursue a sustainable development path towards the high-level coordination between eco-environmental quality and human activities.

RESUMEN

Implantable sensors, especially ion sensors, facilitate the progress of scientific research and personalized healthcare. However, the permanent retention of implants induces health risks after sensors fulfill their mission of chronic sensing. Biodegradation is highly anticipated; while; biodegradable chemical sensors are rare due to concerns about the leakage of harmful active molecules after degradation, such as ionophores. Here, a novel biodegradable fiber calcium ion sensor is introduced, wherein ionophores are covalently bonded with bioinert nanoparticles to replace the classical ion-selective membrane. The fiber sensor demonstrates comparable sensing performance to classical ion sensors and good flexibility. It can monitor the fluctuations of Ca2+ in a 4-day lifespan in vivo and biodegrade in 4 weeks. Benefiting from the stable bonding between ionophores and nanoparticles, the biodegradable sensor exhibits a good biocompatibility after degradation. Moreover, this approach of bonding active molecules on bioinert nanoparticles can serve as an effective methodology for minimizing health concerns about biodegradable chemical sensors.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Metabolic changes in donkey meat during the early postmortem period have not been previously reported. METHODS: The LC-MS-based metabolomics technique was conducted to understand the metabolic profiles and identify the key metabolites of donkey meat in the first 48 h postmortem. RESULTS: The pH values showed a decreasing trend followed by an increasing trend. Shear force was the lowest at 4 h and the highest at 24 h (p < 0.05). For the metabolome, some candidate biomarker metabolites were identified, such as adenine, inosine, n-acetylhistidine, citric acid, isocitrate, and malic acid. Predominant metabolic pathways, such as citrate cycle (TCA cycle), alanine, aspartate and glutamate metabolism, and purine metabolism, were affected by aging time. Overabundant n-acetylhistidine was identified in LT, declined at 12 h postmortem aging, and then increased. This may explain the significantly lower pH at 12 h postmortem. Adenine was higher at 4 h postmortem, then declined. Decreased ADP may indicate a fast consumption of ATP and subsequent purine metabolism in donkey meat. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study provided new insights into early postmortem aging of donkey meat quality.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study is to produce a biodegradable food packaging material that reduces environmental pollution and protects food safety. The effects of total solids content, substrate ratio, polyphenol content, and magnetic stirring time on bovine bone gelatin/sodium carboxymethylcellulose nanoemulsion (BBG/SCMC-NE) were investigated using particle size, PDI, turbidity, rheological properties, and zeta potential as evaluation indexes. The micro, structural, antioxidant, encapsulation, and release properties were characterized after deriving its optimal preparation process. The results showed that the nanoemulsion was optimally prepared with a total solids content of 2%, a substrate ratio of 9:1, a polyphenol content of 0.2%, and a magnetic stirring time of 60 min. SEM showed that the nanoemulsion showed a dense and uniform reticulated structure. FTIR and XRD results showed that covalent cross-linking of proteins and polysaccharides altered the structure of gelatin molecular chains to a more compact form but did not change its semi-crystalline structure. DSC showed that the 9:1 BBG/SCMC-NE had a higher thermal denaturation temperature and greater thermal stability, and its DPPH scavenging rate could reach 79.25% and encapsulation rate up to 90.88%, with excellent slow-release performance. The results of the study provide basic guidance for the preparation of stable active food packaging with excellent properties.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pesticides are used in agricultural production for prevent and control crop diseases and pests, but it is easy to cause excessive pesticides residues in agricultural products, polluting the environment and endangering human health. Due to their unmatched and sustainable capabilities, nanoextraction procedures are becoming every day more important in Analytical Chemistry. In particular, nanoconfined liquid phase extraction has shown extraction capabilities toward polar, medium polar, and/or nonpolar substances, which can be easily modulated depending on the nanoconfined solvent used. Furthermore, this "green" technique showed excellent characteristics in terms of recoveries, extraction time (≤1 min), reliability, and versatility. (97) RESULTS: In this work, the advantages of this technique have been coupled with those of filtration membrane extraction, making use of carbon nanofibers (CnFs) growth on carbon microspheres (CµS). This substrate has been deposited on a filter, which combined with gas chromatographic mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis successfully employed for the nanoextraction of 30 pesticides (18 organochlorine and 12 pyrethroids) in tea samples. Under the optimized extraction conditions, the linear range with standard solutions was from 1 to 1000 ng mL-1 (R2 ≥ 0.99), the limit of detections in tea samples were in the range 0.56-17.98 µg kg-1. The accuracy of the developed method was evaluated by measuring the extraction recovery of the spiked tea samples, and recoveries between 74.41 % and 115.46 %. (119) SIGNIFICANCE: Considering the versatility of nanoconfined liquid phase extraction and the functionality of the filtration membrane extraction procedure, this new extraction method can be considered a powerful candidate for automatized high-throughput analyses of real samples. RESUMEN

Variations in chromosome number are occasionally observed among oomycetes, a group that includes many plant pathogens, but the emergence of such variations and their effects on genome and virulence evolution remain ambiguous. We generated complete telomere-to-telomere genome assemblies for Phytophthora sojae, Globisporangium ultimum, Pythium oligandrum, and G. spinosum. Reconstructing the karyotype of the most recent common ancestor in Peronosporales revealed that frequent chromosome fusion and fission drove changes in chromosome number. Centromeres enriched with Copia-like transposons may contribute to chromosome fusion and fission events. Chromosome fusion facilitated the emergence of pathogenicity genes and their adaptive evolution. Effectors tended to duplicate in the sub-telomere regions of fused chromosomes, which exhibited evolutionary features distinct to the non-fused chromosomes. By integrating ancestral genomic dynamics and structural predictions, we have identified secreted Ankyrin repeat-containing proteins (ANKs) as a novel class of effectors in P. sojae. Phylogenetic analysis and experiments further revealed that ANK is a specifically expanded effector family in oomycetes. These results revealed chromosome dynamics in oomycete plant pathogens, and provided novel insights into karyotype and effector evolution.

RESUMEN

Vanadium-based compounds are fantastic cathodes for aqueous zinc metal batteries due to the high specific capacity and excellent rate capability. Nevertheless, the practical application has been hampered by the dissolution of vanadium in traditional aqueous electrolytes owing to the strong polarity of water molecules. Herein, we propose a hybrid electrolyte made of Zn(ClO4)2 salt in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (G4) and H2O solvents to upgrade the cycle life of Zn//K0.486V2O5 battery. The G4 jointly solvates with Zn2+ ions and replaces a portion of the H2O molecules in the Zn2+ solvation sheath. It forms a strong bond with H2O, reducing its activity, and significantly inhibiting vanadium dissolution and water-induced parasitic reaction. Consequently, the optimized electrolyte with H2O and G4 volume ratio of 5 : 5 enhances the cycling stability of Zn//K0.486V2O5 battery, enabling it to reach up to 600 cycles. In addition, the battery demonstrates a satisfactory reversible capacity of 475.7 mAh g-1 and excellent rate performance attributed to the moderate ionic conductivity (28.8 mS cm-1) of the hybrid electrolyte. Last but not least, in the optimized electrolyte, the symmetric Zn//Zn cells deliver a long cycling performance of 400 h, while the asymmetric Zn//Cu cells shows a high average coulombic efficiency of 97.4 %.

RESUMEN

Cotton fiber holds immense importance as the primary raw material for the textile industry. Consequently, comprehending the regulatory mechanisms governing fiber development is pivotal for enhancing fiber quality. Our study aimed to construct a regulatory network of competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) and assess the impact of non-coding RNAs on gene expression throughout fiber development. Through whole transcriptome data analysis, we identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) regulated by non-coding RNA (ncRNA) that were predominantly enriched in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and the fatty acid elongation pathway. This analysis involved two contrasting phenotypic materials (J02-508 and ZRI015) at five stages of fiber development. Additionally, we conducted a detailed analysis of genes involved in fatty acid elongation, including KCS, KCR, HACD, ECR, and ACOT, to unveil the factors contributing to the variation in fatty acid elongation between J02-508 and ZRI015. Through the integration of histochemical GUS staining, dual luciferase assay experiments, and correlation analysis of expression levels during fiber development stages for lncRNA MSTRG.44818.23 (MST23) and GhKCR2, we elucidated that MST23 positively regulates GhKCR2 expression in the fatty acid elongation pathway. This identification provides valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying fiber development, emphasizing the intricate interplay between non-coding RNAs and protein-coding genes.

RESUMEN

Although intravenous thrombolysis with alteplase remains the primary treatment for acute ischemic stroke, tenecteplase has shown potential advantages over alteplase. Animal studies have demonstrated the favorable pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of tenecteplase. Moreover, it is easier to administer. Clinical trials have demonstrated that tenecteplase is not inferior to alteplase and may even be superior in cases of acute ischemic stroke with large vessel occlusion. Current evidence supports the time and cost benefits of tenecteplase, suggesting that it could potentially replace alteplase as the main option for thrombolytic therapy, especially in patients with large vessel occlusion.
