RESUMEN

In this editorial, we delve into the article and offer valuable insights into a crucial aspect of gastric cancer aetiology. Gastric cancer is a malignancy emanating from the epithelial lining of the gastric mucosa and one of the most prevalent forms of cancer worldwide. The development of gastric cancer is associated with multiple risk factors, including Helicobacter pylori infection, advanced age, a diet rich in salt, and suboptimal eating patterns. Despite notable reductions in morbidity and mortality rates, gastric cancer remains a formidable public health concern, impacting patients' lives. Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) are complex compounds arising from nonenzymatic reactions within living organisms, the accumulation of which is implicated in cellular and tissue damage; thus, the levels are AGEs are correlated with the risk of diverse diseases. The investigation of AGEs is of paramount importance for the treatment of gastric cancer and can provide pivotal insights into disease pathogenesis and preventive and therapeutic strategies. The reduction of AGEs levels and suppression of their accumulation are promising avenues for mitigating the risk of gastric cancer. This approach underscores the need for further research aimed at identifying innovative interventions that can effectively lower the incidence and mortality rates of this malignancy.

Topological superconductors (TSCs) offer a promising avenue for delving into exotic states of matter and fundamental physics. We propose a strategy for realizing high transition temperatures (high-Tc) in TSCs by leveraging nontrivial topology alongside a high carrier density near the Fermi level in metal-doped borophenes. We identified 39 candidates with exceptional thermodynamic stability from thousands of Be-intercalated borophenes (Be1-xBx) via extensive structural searches. Seven candidates exhibit high carrier densities, with B7Be2B7 emerging as a particularly promising candidate. This nanosheet displays both type-I and type-II Dirac fermions, indicative of Z2 topological metals, thereby positioning it as an ideal platform for high-Tc TSCs. The high-density π electrons of B7Be2B7 originating from type-II Dirac fermions, coupled with the out-of-plane vibrations of B and Be atoms, significantly enhance the electron-phonon coupling (λ = 1.42), resulting in a substantially high-Tc of 31.5 K. These findings underscore the potential of metal-doped borophenes as a cutting-edge material platform for achieving high-Tc TSCs.

BACKGROUND: Early prediction of hematoma expansion (HE) is important for the development of therapeutic strategies for spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH). Radiomics can help to predict early hematoma expansion in intracerebral hemorrhage. However, complex image processing procedures, especially hematoma segmentation, are time-consuming and dependent on assessor experience. We provide a fully automated hematoma segmentation method, and construct a hybrid predictive model for risk stratification of hematoma expansion. PURPOSE: To propose an automatic approach for predicting early hemorrhage expansion after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage using deep-learning and radiomics methods. METHODS: A total of 258 patients with sICH were retrospectively enrolled for model construction and internal validation, while another two cohorts (n=87, 149) were employed for independent validation. For hemorrhage segmentation, an iterative segmentation procedure was performed to delineate the area using an nnU-Net framework. Radiomics models of intra-hemorrhage and multiscale peri-hemorrhage were established and evaluated, and the best discriminative-scale peri-hemorrhage radiomics model was selected for further analysis. Combining clinical factors and intra- and peri-hemorrhage radiomics signatures, a hybrid nomogram was constructed for the early HE prediction using multivariate logistic regression. For model validation, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses and DeLong test were used to evaluate the performances of the constructed models, and the calibration curve and decision curve analysis were performed for clinical application. RESULTS: Our iterative auto-segmentation model showed satisfactory results for hematoma segmentation in all four cohorts. The Dice similarity coefficient of this hematoma segmentation model reached 0.90, showing an expert-level accuracy in hematoma segmentation. The consumed time of the efficient delineation was significantly decreased, from 18 min to less than 2 min, with the assistance of the auto-segmentation model. The radiomics model of 2-mm peri-hemorrhage had a preferable area under ROC curve (AUC) of 0.840 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.768, 0.912) compared with the original (0-mm dilatation) model with an AUC of 0.796 (95 % CI: 0.717, 0.875). The clinical-radiomics hybrid model showed better performances for HE prediction, with AUC of 0.853, 0.852, 0.772, and 0.818 in the training, internal validation, and independent validation cohorts 1 and 2, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The fully automatic clinical-radiomics model based on deep learning and radiomics exhibits a good ability for hematoma segmentation and a favorable performance in stratifying HE risks.

Lung cancer has emerged as a major global public health concern. With growing public interest in lung cancer, online searches for related information have surged. However, a comprehensive evaluation of the credibility, quality, and value of lung cancer-related videos on digital media platforms remains unexamined. This study aimed to assess the informational quality and content of lung cancer-related videos on Douyin and Bilibili. A total of 200 lung cancer-related videos that met the criteria were selected from Douyin and Bilibili for evaluation and analysis. The first step involved recording and analyzing the basic information provided in the videos. Subsequently, the source and type of content for each video were identified. All videos' educational content and quality were then evaluated using JAMA, GQS, and Modified DISCERN. Douyin videos were found to be more popular in terms of likes, comments, favorites, and shares, whereas Bilibili videos were longer in duration (P < .001). The majority of video content on both platforms comprised lung cancer introductions (31/100, 31%), with medical professionals being the primary source of uploaded videos (Douyin, n = 55, 55%; Bilibili, n = 43, 43%). General users on Douyin scored the lowest on the JAMA scale, whereas for-profit businesses scored the highest (2.50 points). The results indicated that the videos' informational quality was insufficient. Videos from science communications and health professionals were deemed more reliable regarding completeness and content quality compared to videos from other sources. The public should exercise caution and consider the scientific validity when seeking healthcare information on short video platforms.

BACKGROUND: Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) of healthy donors improves ulcerative colitis (UC) patients by restoring the balance of the gut microbiota. However, donors vary in microbial diversity and composition, often resulting in weak or even ineffective FMT. Improving the efficacy of FMT through combination treatment has become a promising strategy. Ulva lactuca polysaccharides (ULP) have been found to benefit host health by regulating gut microbiota. The effect of the combination of ULP and FMT in ameliorating UC has not yet been evaluated. RESULTS: The present study found that supplementation with ULP combined with FMT showed better effects in ameliorating UC than supplementation with FMT alone. Results suggested that FMT or ULP combined with FMT alleviated the symptoms of UC in mice, as evidenced by prevention of body weight loss, improvement of disease activity index and protection of the intestinal mucus. Notably, ULP in combination with FMT was more effective than FMT in reducing levels of cytokines and related inflammatory enzymes. In addition, ULP combined with FMT effectively restored the dysbiosis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) and further enriched probiotics (such as Bifidobacterium). The production of short-chain fatty acids, especially acetic acid, was also significantly enriched by ULP combined with FMT. CONCLUSION: Supplementation of ULP combined with FMT could significantly ameliorate DSS-induced colitis in mice by inhibiting inflammation and restoring dysbiosis of gut microbiota. These results suggested that ULP combined with FMT has potential application in ameliorating UC. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

OBJECTIVE: Previous studies focusing on primary aldosteronism (PA) and thyroid diseases were controversial. Hence, this study aimed to examine associations between thyroid function, thyroid diseases, and PA and its subtypes. DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study, which enrolled 1023 patients with PA and 6138 patients with essential hypertension (EH) admitted to Hypertension Center of People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region from August 2011 to June 2022. All patients with PA were accurately classified into aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) and idiopathic hyperaldosteronism (IHA) by adrenal vein sampling (AVS). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship of thyroid function, thyroid nodules, and PA and its subtypes. RESULTS: A total of 7161 patients (327 APA and 696 IHA, and 6138 EH) were included with a mean age of 48.20 ± 8.83 years. PA patients and PA subtypes showed lower FT4, FT3, TT4, TT3, and prevalence of positive TPOAb, meanwhile higher prevalence of thyroid nodules than EH patients (PA: 56.10%, IHA: 56.90%, APA: 54.80%, and EH: 48.90%, respectively). PA (adjusted OR: 1.290, 95% CI: 1.035-1.607, P = .02) and its subtype (IHA) (adjusted OR: 1.316, 95% CI: 1.005-1.724, P = .04) were significantly associated with thyroid nodules. Compared to patients with lower plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC) levels (<12 ng/dL), patients with PAC levels ≥ 12 ng/dL presented a higher prevalence of thyroid nodules. CONCLUSIONS: PA patients had lower thyroid function and higher prevalence of thyroid nodules compared to EH patients. Therefore, the screening of thyroid function and thyroid nodules may be indispensable for PA patients.

Mitochondrial damage has a particular impact on the immune system and tumor microenvironment, which can trigger cell stress, an inflammatory response, and disrupt immune cell function, thus all of which can accelerate the progression of the tumor. Therefore, it is of essence to comprehend how the immune system function and the tumor microenvironment interact with mitochondrial dysfunction for cancer treatment. Preserving the integrity of mitochondria or regulating the function of immune cells, such as macrophages, may enhance the efficacy of cancer therapy. Future research should concentrate on the interactions among mitochondria, the immune system, and the tumor microenvironment to identify new therapeutic strategies.

Background: The accurate identification and diagnosis of secondary hypertension is critical,especially while cardiovascular heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death. To develop a big data intelligence platform for secondary hypertension using electronic medical records to contribute to future basic and clinical research. Methods: Using hospital data, the platform, named Hypertension DATAbase at Urumchi (UHDATA), included patients diagnosed with hypertension at the People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region since December 2004. The electronic data acquisition system, the database synchronization technology, and data warehouse technology (extract-transform-load, ETL) for the scientific research big data platform were used to synchronize and extract the data from each business system in the hospital. Standard data elements were established for the platform, including demographic and medical information. To facilitate the research, the database was also linked to the sample database system, which includes blood samples, urine specimens, and tissue specimens. Results: From December 17, 2004, to August 31, 2022, a total of 295,297 hypertensive patients were added to the platform, with 53.76% being males, with a mean age of 59 years, and 14% with secondary hypertension. However, 75,802 patients visited the Hypertension Center at our hospital, with 43% (32,595 patients) being successfully diagnosed with secondary hypertension. The database contains 1458 elements, with an average fill rate of 90%. The database can continuously include the data for new hypertensive patients and add new data for existing hypertensive patients, including post-discharge follow-up information, and the database updates every 2 weeks. Presently, some studies that are based on the platform have been published. Conclusions: Using computer information technology, we developed and implemented a big database of dynamically updating electronic medical records for patients with hypertension, which is helpful in promoting future research on secondary hypertension.

Globally, colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common type of cancer. CRC has no apparent symptoms in the early stages of disease, and most patients receive a confirmed diagnosis in the middle or late disease stages. The incidence of CRC continues to increase, and the affected population tends to be younger. Therefore, determining how to achieve an early CRC diagnosis and treatment has become a top priority for prolonging patient survival. Myeloid­derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) are a group of bone marrow­derived immuno­negative regulatory cells that are divided into two subpopulations, polymorphonuclear­MDSCs and monocytic­MDSCs, based on their phenotypic similarities to neutrophils and monocytes, respectively. These cells can inhibit the immune response and promote cancer cell metastasis in the tumour microenvironment (TME). A large aggregation of MDSCs in the TME is often a marker of cancer and a poor prognosis in inflammatory diseases of the intestine (such as colonic adenoma and ulcerative colitis). In the present review, the phenotypic classification of MDSCs in the CRC microenvironment are first discussed. Then, the amplification, role and metastatic mechanism of MDSCs in the CRC TME are described, focusing on genes, gene modifications, proteins and the intestinal microenvironment. Finally, the progress in CRC­targeted therapies that aim to modulate the quantity, function and structure of MDSCs are summarized in the hope of identifying potential screening markers for CRC and improving CRC prognosis and therapeutic options.

Macroautophagy/autophagy is a catabolic process crucial for degrading cytosolic components and damaged organelles to maintain cellular homeostasis, enabling cells to survive in extreme extracellular environments. ENAH/MENA, a member of the Ena/VASP protein family, functions as a highly efficient actin elongation factor. In this study, our objective was to explore the role of ENAH in the autophagy process. Initially, we demonstrated that depleting ENAH in cancer cells inhibits autophagosome formation. Subsequently, we observed ENAH's colocalization with MAP1LC3/LC3 during tumor cell starvation, dependent on actin cytoskeleton polymerization and the interaction between ENAH and BECN1 (beclin 1). Additionally, mammalian ATG9A formed a ring-like structure around ENAH-LC3 puncta during starvation, relying on actin cytoskeleton polymerization. Furthermore, ENAH's EVH1 and EVH2 domains were found to be indispensable for its colocalization with LC3 and BECN1, while the PRD domain played a crucial role in the formation of the ATG9A ring. Finally, our study revealed ENAH-led actin comet tails in autophagosome trafficking. Aim: A bibliometric analysis and evaluation of research on non-Helicobacter pylori Helicobacter species (NHPHs) is essential to determining future research directions. Materials & methods: A comprehensive search was carried out using predetermined search terms within the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) to gather publications spanning from 1993 to 2023. VOSviewer and Citespace were employed for data analysis and visualization. Results: 308 publications on NHPHs were included. Among these, gastric NHPHs received more publications and attention compared with enterohepatic NHPHs. Key findings included the identification of most productive countries, institutions, journals, authors, keywords, research trends and notable perspectives in the field. Conclusion: The article guides further research and clinical applications on NHPHs.

Introducing Holstein cows on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is a potential solution to enhance local milk production. However, the relationship between milk quality and altitude in China remains unknown. Therefore, the components and plasmin (PL) system of raw milk from different altitudes (sea level, 1600, 2700, and 3800 m) were investigated. The daily milk production of Holstein cows and PL activity decreased as the altitude increased. However, the components content of raw milk, plasminogen (PLG)/PL ratio, activities of PLG and plasmin activator (PA) increased with altitude. The pasteurization resulted a significant decrease in PA activity of all milk and a significant increase in PL activity in milk collected at higher altitudes (2700 and 3800 m), suggesting the pasteurization was unsuitable for preserving milk at higher altitudes. This study offered references for the production and storage of milk after introducing Holstein cows on Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Quantum chemical calculations using ab initio methods at the MRCI+Q(8,9)/def2-QZVPPD and CCSD(T)/def2-QZVPPD levels as well as using density functional theory are reported for the diatomic molecules AeN- (Ae=Ca, Sr, Ba). The anions CaN- and SrN- have electronic triplet (3Π) ground states with nearly identical bond dissociation energies De ~57 kcal/mol calculated at the MRCI+Q(8,9)/def2-QZVPPD level. In contrast, the heavier homologue BaN- has a singlet (1Σ+) ground state, which is only 1.1 kcal/mol below the triplet (3Σ-) state. The computed bond dissociation energy of (1Σ+) BaN- is 68.4 kcal/mol. The calculations at the CCSD(T)-full/def2-QZVPPD and BP86-D3(BJ)/def2-QZVPPD levels are in reasonable agreement with the MRCI+Q(8,9)/def2-QZVPPD data, except for the singlet (1Σ+) state, which has a large multireference character. The calculated atomic partial charges given by the CM5, Voronoi and Hirshfeld methods suggest small to medium-sized Ae←N- charge donation for most electronic states. In contrast, the NBO method predicts for all species medium to large Ae→N- electronic charge donation, which is due to the neglect of the (n)p AOs of Ae atoms as genuine valence orbitals. Neither the bond orders nor the bond lengths correlate with the bond dissociation energies. The EDA-NOCV calculations show that the heavier alkaline earth atoms Ca, Sr, Ba use their (n)s and (n-1)d orbitals for covalent bonding.

To investigate the gelation process of direct ultra-high-temperature (UHT) milk, a pilot-scale steam infusion heat treatment was used to process milk samples over a wide temperature of 142-157 °C for 0.116-6 s, followed by storage at 4 °C, 25 °C, and 37 °C. The results of the physicochemical properties of milk showed that the particle sizes and plasmin activities of all milk samples increased during storage at 25 °C, but age gelation only occurred in three treated samples, 147 °C/6 s, 142 °C/6 s, and 142 °C/3 s, which all had lower plasmin activities. Furthermore, the properties of formed gels were further compared and analyzed by the measures of structure and intermolecular interaction. The results showed that the gel formed in the 147 °C/6 s-treated milk with a higher C* value had a denser network structure and higher gel strength, while the 142 °C/6 s-treated milk had the highest porosity. Furthermore, disulfide bonds were the largest contributor to the gel structure, and there were significant differences in disulfide bonds, hydrophobic interaction forces, hydrogen bonds, and electrostatic force among the gels. Our results showed that the occurrence of gel was not related to the thermal load, and the different direct UHT treatments produced different age gels in the milk.

Unlike graphene derived from graphite, borophenes represent a distinct class of synthetic two-dimensional materials devoid of analogous bulk-layered allotropes, leading to covalent bonding within borophenes instead of van der Waals (vdW) stacking. Our investigation focuses on 665 vdW-stacking boron bilayers to uncover potential bulk-layered boron allotropes through vdW stacking. Systematic high-throughput screening and stability analysis reveal a prevailing inclination toward covalently bonded layers in the majority of boron bilayers. However, an intriguing outlier emerges in δ5 borophene, demonstrating potential as a vdW-stacking candidate. We delve into electronic and topological structural similarities between δ5 borophene and graphene, shedding light on the structural integrity and stability of vdW-stacked boron structures across bilayers, multilayers, and bulk-layered allotropes. The δ5 borophene analogues exhibit metallic properties and characteristics of phonon-mediated superconductors, boasting a critical temperature near 22 K. This study paves the way for the concept of "borophite", a long-awaited boron analogue of graphite.

This article provides an overview of the innovative and feasible application of neutrophils as drug carriers. It explores the mechanisms underlying neutrophil function, elucidates the mechanism of drug delivery mediated by neutrophil-hitchhiking, and discusses the potential applications of this strategy in the treatment of cancer, immune diseases, inflammatory diseases, and other medical conditions.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of two different organic selenium (Se) supplements, selenomethionine (Se-Met) and selenohomolanthionine (Se-Hlan), on the serum biochemical parameters and Se status of dairy cows. Different dietary Se supplementation treatments were set as follows: a control group (CON, adding sodium selenite at 0.3 mg Se/kg dry matter [DM]), 0.3 and 0.5 Se-Met (adding Se-Met at 0.3 and 0.5 mg Se/kg DM, respectively), as well as 0.3 and 0.5 Se-Hlan (adding Se-Hlan at 0.3 and 0.5 mg Se/kg DM, respectively). The experiment lasted 8 weeks. The serum measurements showed that both organic Se treatments resulted in higher uric acid than CON. Se-Met produced higher aspartate aminotransferase, glucose, urea, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and lactate dehydrogenase than Se-Hlan. Regarding the Se status, the highest milk Se values appeared in 0.5 Se-Met, with intermediate values in 0.3 Se-Met and 0.5 Se-Hlan, whereas the highest and lowest serum Se levels were presented in 0.5 Se-Met and 0.3 Se-Hlan, respectively. Our results suggest that Se-Hlan was not as efficient in boosting serum or milk Se as Se-Met and differences in serum biomarkers between Se-Met and Se-Hlan may be associated with distinct metabolic pathways for different forms of organic Se.

Colostrum basic protein (CBP) is a trace protein extracted from bovine colostrum. Previous studies have shown that CBP can promote bone cell differentiation and increase bone density. However, the mechanism by which CBP promotes bone activity remains unclear. This study investigated the mechanism of the effect of CBP on bone growth in mice following dietary supplementation of CBP at doses that included 0.015%, 0.15%, 1.5%, and 5%. Compared with mice fed a normal diet, feeding 5% CBP significantly enhanced bone rigidity and improved the microstructure of bone trabeculae. Five-percent CBP intake triggered significant positive regulation of calcium metabolism in the direction of bone calcium accumulation. The expression levels of paracellular calcium transport proteins CLDN2 and CLDN12 were upregulated nearly 1.5-fold by 5% CBP. We conclude that CBP promotes calcium absorption in mice by upregulating the expression of the calcium-transporting paracellular proteins CLND2 and CLND12, thereby increasing bone density and promoting bone growth. Overall, CBP contributes to bone growth by affecting calcium metabolism.

PURPOSE: Preeclampsia is a major cause of health problems for both pregnant women and unborn babies worldwide. However, the underlying causes of preeclampsia are not fully understood, leading to limited effective treatments. The goal of this study is to enhance our knowledge of its causes, devise prevention strategies, and develop treatments. METHODS: We performed a systematic literature search. Six models regarding the pathogenesis of preeclampsia are discussed in this review. RESULTS: This review focuses on the latest advancements in understanding preeclampsia's origins. Preeclampsia is a complex condition caused by various factors, processes, and pathways. Reduced blood flow and oxygen to the uterus and placenta, heightened inflammatory reactions, immune imbalances, altered genetic changes, imbalanced blood vessel growth factors, and disrupted gut bacteria may contribute to its development. CONCLUSION: Preeclampsia is thought to result from the interplay of these factors.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer has attracted widespread attention on social media due to its high incidence and severity. The Bilibili, TikTok, and YouTube video-sharing platforms have received considerable interest among general health consumers. Nevertheless, it remains unclear whether the information in videos on these platforms is of satisfactory content and quality. METHODS: A total of 300 eligible videos related to gastric cancer were screened from three video-sharing platforms, Bilibili, TikTok, and YouTube, for assessment and analysis. First, the basic information presented in the videos was recorded. Next, we identified the source and content type of each video. Then, the Global Quality Scale (GQS), Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), and Modified DISCERN were used to assess the educational content and quality of each video. A comparative analysis was undertaken of the videos procured from these three sources. RESULTS: We identified six categories of uploaders of the 300 videos: 159 videos (53%) were uploaded by health professionals, 21 videos (7%) by users in science communications, 29 videos (9.67%) by general users, 27 videos (9%) from news agencies, 63 videos (12%) by nonprofit organizations, and one video (0.33%) by a for-profit organization. In terms of the content types of the 300 videos, we identified five distinct categories. There were 48 videos (16%) on early signals, 12 videos (4%) on late symptoms, 40 videos (13.33%) on etiologies and causations, 160 videos (53.33%) on scientific introductions, and 40 videos (13.33%) on treatment methods. The overall quality of the videos was evaluated by the GQS, JAMA, and Modified DISCERN and was found to be medium, with scores of 2.6/5, 2.41/4, and 2.71/5 points, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: This innovative study demonstrates that videos on social media platforms can help the public learn about early signals, late symptoms, treatment methods, etiologies and causations, and scientific introductions of gastric cancer. However, both the content and quality of uploaded recordings are inadequate currently. More efforts should be made to enhance the content and quality of videos on gastric cancer and to increase public awareness.
