RESUMEN

The shallow hydrothermal vents (HVs) of Kueishan Island are considered as a template for studying the extremes of sulfide-polluted and acidified water. The present study examined the biological and spatiotemporal aspects of mesozooplankton mortality in waters around this extreme HV environment. Zooplankton sample collection was carried out in three monsoonal periods and the results revealed that there was a significant decrease in the mortality of total mesozooplankton with increasing distance from the HVs. The overall mortality of mesozooplankton showed a significant negative correlation with sea surface temperature and pH. Particularly, mortality of copepods showed a significant negative correlation with pH, whereas it was significantly positive correlated with sea surface temperature in the southwest monsoon prevailing period. Overall, the results may imply a situation that zooplankton will encounter in the more acidified environment of a future ocean.

RESUMEN

Osteoporosis is a common bone disease that often leads to difficulty in vertebrae revision. Traditional pedicle screws are often complicated to operate and have poor visibility during implantation. A new detachable pedicle screw is needed to improve the revision effect. The aim of this study was to design a new detachable pedicle screw based on medical optical imaging to improve the outcome of vertebral revision in osteoporosis, and to improve operational feasibility and visibility. In this study, the parameters related to the degree of osteoporosis were obtained by optical imaging detection of the osteoporotic vertebral body. Then a new detachable pedicle screw was designed according to the test results to improve the effect of vertebral body revision. By preparing and optimizing the material and structure of the screw, it is ensured that it has sufficient mechanical strength and stability. Finally, the visibility and operability of the improved screw during implantation were verified by medical optical imaging. Compared with traditional screws, the new detachable pedicle screw can improve the vertebral body revision in the case of osteoporosis. The optical imaging test results show that the new screw has good visibility and maneuverability, providing more accurate guidance and positioning for the vertebral body revision operation.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lumbar disc herniation (LDH), as one of the most common causes of lower back pain, imposes a heavy economic burden on patients and society. Conservative management is the first-line choice for the majority of LDH patients. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an important part of conservative treatment and has attracted more and more international attention. STUDY DESIGN: Evidence-based guideline. METHODS: We formed a guideline panel of multidisciplinary experts. The clinical questions were identified on the basis of a systematic literature search and a consensus meeting. We searched the literature for direct evidence on the management of LDH and assessed its certainty-generated recommendations using the grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluation (GRADE) approach. RESULTS: The guideline panel made 20 recommendations, which covered the use of Shentong Zhuyu decoction, Shenzhuo decoction, Simiao San decoction, Duhuo Jisheng decoction, Yaobitong capsule, Yaotongning capsule, Osteoking, manual therapy, needle knife, manual acupuncture, electroacupuncture, Chinese exercise techniques (Tai Chi, Baduanjin, or Yijinjing), and integrative medicine, such as combined non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, neural nutrition, and traction. Recommendations were either strong or weak, or in the form of ungraded consensus-based statement. CONCLUSION: This is the first LDH treatment guideline for TCM and integrative medicine with a systematic search, synthesis of evidence, and using the GRADE method to rate the quality of evidence. We hope these recommendations can help support healthcare workers caring for LDH patients.

RESUMEN

Background: Capitulum mitella is a widely distributed and ecologically important stalked barnacle that settles extensively on rocky shores. This species contributes to the structural complexity of intertidal habitats and plays a critical role in the marine ecosystem. This study aimed to reveal the genetic diversity and population structure of C. mitella by analyzing the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene. Methods: A 683bp fragment of the COI gene was sequenced from 390 individuals sampled from six localities in Fujian, China. Results: A total of 84 distinct haplotypes were identified through the analysis of 82 polymorphic sites, resulting in an average haplotype diversity (h) of 0.660 and nucleotide diversity (π) of 0.00182. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) and pairwise F ST statistics showed no significant population structure. Neutrality tests and mismatch distributions provided evidence of recent population expansion for the species. Conclusions: We suggest that the species' high dispersal ability, and ocean currents coupled with limited physical barriers in the region, contribute to its current phylogeographic structure. These findings enhance our comprehension of the genetic diversity and population structure of C. mitella, providing valuable insights for future conservation efforts.

RESUMEN

Non-drug therapies of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), including acupuncture, massage, tai chi chuan, and Baduanjin, have emerged as widespread interventions for the treatment of various diseases in clinical practice. In recent years, preliminary studies on the mechanisms of non-drug therapies of TCM have been mostly based on functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology. FNIRS is an innovative, non-invasive tool to monitor hemodynamic changes in the cerebral cortex. Our review included clinical research conducted over the last 10 years, establishing fNIRS as a reliable and stable neuroimaging technique. This review explores new applications of this technology in the field of neuroscience. First, we summarize the working principles of fNIRS. We then present preventive research on the use of fNIRS in healthy individuals and therapeutic research on patients undergoing non-drug therapies of TCM. Finally, we emphasize the potential for encouraging future advancements in fNIRS studies to establish a theoretical framework for research in related fields.

RESUMEN

Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of pediatric tuina for allergic rhinitis treatment in children. Methods: Three English, four Chinese, one Japanese, and two Korean databases were searched for relevant literature published till February 2021, and eligible randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included for analysis. Data were screened and extracted independently using predesigned forms. The methodological quality evaluation was performed using the tool of Cochrane bias risk assessment, and meta-analysis was performed through Review Manager 5.3. Results: A total of 12 RCTs, which included 716 children, were selected for meta-analysis. Compared with Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture, Western medicine, and other therapies, pediatric tuina alone or in combination with other treatments had a higher clinical effectiveness (relative risk = 1.16, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.08-1.25) in treating children with allergic rhinitis. Pediatric tuina also effectively improved the following signs and symptoms of allergic rhinitis in children: nasal congestion (mean difference [MD] = -0.44, 95% CI = -0.70 to -0.19), runny nose (MD = -0.39, 95% CI = -0.55 to -0.23), sneezing (MD = -0.23, 95% CI = -0.38 to -0.08), and turbinate swelling (MD = -0.26, 95% CI = -0.48 to -0.04); all differences were statistically significant. Conclusions: The present study provided favorable evidence for the treatment of allergic rhinitis in children with pediatric tuina. However, owing to the impact of research quality, this evidence needs to be validated via strictly designed clinical trials.

RESUMEN

During this research, the average surface temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, and pH were 24.65 ± 1.53 (°C), 34.21 ± 0.07 (PSU), 6.85 ± 0.18 (mg/L), and 8.36 ± 0.03, respectively. Based on these environmental parameters, stations were arranged into three groups. Group A represents stations located around Keelung Island with the relative highest average dissolved oxygen, lowest average temperature, and pH values. Instead, the lowest average dissolved oxygen and highest average temperature, salinity, and pH values were recorded at the offshore stations. Keelung Island area was charged by cold water masses, which were driven by the Northeast monsoon, and stations in group C were affected by the Kuroshio Current. Kueishan Island area was mainly affected by mixed water masses resulting from the Kuroshio intrusion and monsoon-derived cold water. In this study, a total of 108 copepod species were identified, with an average abundance of 774.24 ± 289.42 (inds. m-3). Most species belong to the orders Calanoida and Poecilostomatoida, with an average relative abundance (RA) of 62.96% and 30.56%, respectively. Calanoid copepodites were the most dominant group, with a RA of 28.06%. This was followed by Paracalanus aculeatus, with a RA of 18.44%. The RA of Clausocalanus furcatus and Canthocalanus pauper was 4.80% and 3.59%, respectively. The dominant species P. aculeatus, C. pauper, Paracalanus parvus, and Temora turbinata were positively correlated with dissolved oxygen and negatively correlated with temperature in the surface waters. pH showed a negative correlation with P. parvus and T. turbinata, while the temperature was negatively correlated with these two dominant species. Indicator species were selected by an indicator value higher than 50%. Temora turbinata, Calanopia elliptica, C. pauper, Euchaeta concinna, Temora discaudata, Acartia pacifica, Macrosetella gracilis, Corycaeus speciosus, and P. parvus were considered as monsoonal cold water indicator species in Group A. Indicator copepod species for the Kuroshio Current were Farranula concinna, Copilia mirabilis, Candacia aethiopica, Corycaeus agilis, Farranula gibbula and Acrocalanus monachus in the study area. Paracandacia truncata, Oncaea clevei, P. aculeatus, and Centropages furcatus were considered suitable indicators for mixed water masses.

RESUMEN

During the last several decades, since the discovery of a decagonal quasicrystal, a 2 nm cluster model has been widely accepted as its basic quasi-unit-cell (QUC). Instead of the traditional 2 nm QUC, a 3.2 nm QUC is proposed in this paper. The 3.2 nm QUC can fill all the blank areas. The 3.2 nm QUC consists of 251 atoms. The element type and position of each atom are determined using high-angle annular detector dark-field (HAADF) images taken along three projection directions, i.e., one along the ten-fold symmetry and the other two along the two-fold symmetry with an intersection angle of 18 degrees. The proposed model opens an avenue for further investigation of the aperiodic atomic structure of other quasicrystals.

RESUMEN

A new species Tharybis kueishanensis sp. n. (Copepoda: Calanoida: Tharybidae) is described from the inshore surface waters of Kueishan Island off northern Taiwan, which is the first report of Tharybis from the China Seas. Its female is distinguished from the other species of Tharybis by the total body length (1.89-2.12 mm) larger than the other species, the shape of the genital double-somite, which is slightly asymmetrical with a small notch on the distal margin of the right side, and the length of the inner terminal spine of leg 5, which is about 1.5 times of the terminal spiniform projections. The male is distinguished by the presence of 3 triangular projections at the inner middle margin and the tip of the distal segment of the right leg 5.

RESUMEN

Quasicrystals have special crystal structures with long-range order, but without translational symmetry. Unexpectedly, carousel-like successive flippings of groups of atoms inside the ∼2 nm decagonal structural subunits of the decagonal quasicrystal Al60Cr20Fe10Si10 were directly observed using in situ high-temperature high-resolution transmission electron microscopy imaging. The observed directionally successive phason flips occur mainly clockwise and occasionally anticlockwise. The origin of these directional phason flips is analyzed and discussed.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: To investigate the correlation between preoperative inflammatory markers, Ki-67 expression and the pathological grade of glioma, and to provide a reference for clinical prediction of glioma prognosis.A total of 45 glioma patients who underwent surgery with complete clinical and pathological data were in our hospital from January 2012 to December 2018 were enrolled. Glioma was divided into WHO grade I to IV. Forty-five healthy health examiners with matched clinical characteristics were included to the control group. Blood routine tests were recorded at admission in both the glioma and control group. The ratio of neutrophil to lymphocyte cytometry (NLR), derived neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (dNLR) (white blood cell count - neutrophil count to neutrophil count), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and prognostic nutritional index (PNI, serum albumin content + 5 × lymphocyte count) were calculated. The expression of Ki-67 in glioma was detected by immunohistochemistry. The relationship between the above markers, Ki-67 expression and pathological grade of glioma was evaluated with receiver operating characteristics curve analysis and Spearman correlation test. The correlation between the markers and Ki-67 were also determined.NLR, dNLR, PLR were increased in the glioma group (P < .001, <.001, .002), whereas red blood cell distribution width (RDW) was decreased (P = .009). All the glioma samples expressed Ki-67 with varying degree. Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis reveals NLR, dNLR, PLR, and RDW have significant discriminating ability in differentiating the glioma and control sample. NLR, PLR, PNI, and Ki-67 were significantly correlated with glioma pathology grade (P = .023, .006, .019, <.05), while dNLR and RDW were not associated with glioma grade. Finally, NLR and PLR were related to Ki-67 expression in glioma patients (P = .002, .022), while dNLR and RDW were not related to Ki-67 expression.Preoperative inflammatory markers NLR, PLR, PNI, and postoperative Ki-67 expression are associated with pathological grade of glioma. Detection of these markers may aid in better prediction of glioma prognosis.

RESUMEN

Zooplankton plays a pivotal role in linking primary production to higher level consumers in the food webs of marine ecosystems. The distribution of zooplankton is affected by general water conditions, monsoons, currents, and spatial and temporal factors. In the Arctic Ocean, the sea surface is naturally covered with ice. Under ice, water masses interplay to create complex environments that facilitate the transport and distribution of zooplankton, thus altering community structures at geospatial and vertical scales. The present study investigated the species composition and copepod community structures by using geospatial and multiple depth scales, and using multivariate analyses to evaluate the relation of sampling stations and layers. During July-August 2010, zooplankton samples were collected and the temperature and salinity of seawater measured from three stations in the Canada Basin and two stations in the Makarov Basin of the Arctic Ocean (maximum distance of approximately 1400 km). A total of 55 copepod species (including 25 species that were solely identified to the generic level) and 7 taxa of copepodites, altogether belonging to 28 genera, 11 families, and 2 orders were identified, and significant differences were detected in copepod community structures among sampling strata and at geospatial scales. Numerically, Calanus hyperboreus, Calanus copepodite, Calanoida copepodite, Calanus glacialis, and Metridia longa were the most dominant species and taxa. At the local scale, copepod compositions responded differently at each of the sampling stations. At the geospatial scale, the distance between stations MS03 and ICE explained variations in the pattern of dominant species and of copepod community richness. Our study demonstrated varied spatial distribution which indicates that (1) the abundance of copepods at 0-200 m was significantly higher than at other strata, (2) vertical strata affected the distribution of copepod communities, and (3) the interplay of North Pacific and Atlantic waters shaping the copepod assemblage structure at geospatial scales in the Arctic Ocean. The results of our research provide base data for Arctic zooplankton biodiversity and biogeographic distribution.

RESUMEN

Nanotubes are often formed by the folding of one-layer or multilayer compounds under microscopic catalytic growth conditions. Here, CdS nanotubes with tunable wall sizes and optical microcavities were prepared via a simple thermal evaporation co-deposition technique with Sn metal nanowire templating and ejection. Compared to core-shell Sn/CdS nanowires, which have poor microcavity quality, the hollow/CdS nanotubes have a higher quality factor (Q) that can reach approximately 400 in the spectral range of 550-800 nm when excited by a continuous-wave 405 nm laser. This high Q factor leads to low-threshold lasing and line-width narrowing due to the mode selection, which are important in many fields, including lasers, sensors, communications, and optical storage. A theoretical mode analysis of the hollow/CdS nanotubes with different thicknesses addressed their microcavity mode confinement and enhancements. This technique provides a new way to prepare semiconductor nanotubes for new photonic devices and photoelectric applications.

RESUMEN

Over-activated osteoclasts derived from myeloid or peripheral blood monocytes by inflammatory cytokines results in osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, and other bone erosion-related diseases. Interleukin 35 (IL-35) is a novel anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive factor. This study investigated the effect of IL-35 on TNF-α-induced osteoclastogenesis. In the presence of IL-35, this process was detected by Tartrate-Resistant Acid Phosphatase (TRAP) staining, F-actin staining, and bone resorption assays. The effects of IL-35 on TNF-α-induced apoptosis were demonstrated by TUNEL staining, cell viability assays, and flow cytometry. Moreover, a microarray was performed to detect the effect of IL-35 on TNF-α-activated phosphatase kinase. The effect of IL-35 on the TNF-α-mediated activation of NF-κB, MAPK, TRAF2, RIP1, Fas-associated death domain (FADD), and caspase3 was further investigated. In addition, a murine calvarial osteolysis model was established via the subcutaneous injection of TNF-α onto the calvaria, and histological analysis was subsequently performed. As a result, IL-35 inhibited TNF-α-induced osteoclast formation and bone resorption in vitro and osteolysis calvaria in vivo. NFATc1, c-fos, and TRAP were downregulated by IL-35 through the inhibition of NF-κB and MAPK, during which JAK1/STAT1 was activated. Moreover, based on TUNEL staining and flow cytometry, IL-35 was shown to enhance TNF-α-induced osteoclast apoptosis. Meanwhile, FADD and cleaved-caspase 3 were increased in cells treated with TNF-α and IL-35, whereas the DNA-binding activity of NF-κB was increased in TNF-α-treated cells, but was decreased in cells treated with both TNF-α and IL-35. In conclusion, IL-35 inhibits TNF-α-induced osteoclastogenesis and promotes apoptosis by activating JAK1/STAT1 and shifting activation from TNF receptor-associated death domain (TRADD)-TRAF2/RIP1-NF-κB to TRADD-FADD-caspase 3 signaling.

RESUMEN

One of the core issues for the A/B site doping in the bismuth layer magnetoelectric materials is to find out the evolution of the magnetic structure, crystal structure and elemental distribution, and the coupling effects between spin and lattice with the increase of ion substitution. Here, we have conducted systematic structural and physical property studies on the series samples of Bi5Ti3Fe1-xCoxO15. This work presents that Bi5Ti3Fe1-xCoxO15 forms a single four layer perovskite-like structure for 0 ≤ x < 0.67, while a three layer perovskite-like structure block begins to arise for x ≥ 0.67. With different cobalt content, the sample demonstrates antiferromagnetism, spin state determined magnetism, or magnetic anisotropy determined magnetism. The weak ferromagnetism is considered to be induced by the larger displacement of Co3+ ions from the center of octahedra and the change of the spin state of Co3+ ions. It is also observed that Fe and Co elements are homogeneously substituted in the three layer structure block, accompanied by the rotation (and/or distortion) of BO6 octahedra.

RESUMEN

Resistive switching processes in HfO2 are studied by electron holography and in situ energy-filtered imaging. The results show that oxygen vacancies are gradually generated in the oxide layer under ramped electrical bias, and finally form several conductive channels connecting the two electrodes. It also shows that the switching process occurs at the top interface of the hafnia layer.

RESUMEN

In situ electrical transport measurements for individual C60 nanowhiskers are performed using a transmission electron microscope which monitors the crystal and electronic structural changes of the C60 nanowhiskers simultaneously. Electron diffraction combined with electron energy-loss spectroscopy shows that under the external electric current, the C60 nanowhiskers first transform from a face-centered-cubic structure to a disordered arrangement of C60 molecules. The cage structure of the C60 molecules then collapses to an amorphous carbon and finally, the amorphous carbon turns into graphene stacks. This process indicates the hybridization transformation from sp(2.278) to sp(2), which is different from the transition process of C60 materials under high pressure. The obtained results also suggest that the stability of the C60 nanowhiskers should be of crucial concern when they work as electrical devices.

RESUMEN

This study was aimed to investigate the effect of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) on the migration in vitro of the murine mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) and its related mechanisms. The migration ability of murine MSC (C3H10T1/2), ICAM-1 transfected MSC (C3H10T1/2-MIGR1-ICAM-1) and empty vector-transfected MSC (C3H10T 1/2-MIGR1) were assayed in vitro by using the transwell system. Briefly, the cells were seeded on the membrane with 8 µm aperture and the fetal bovine serum was used as the chemotactic agent to induce MSC migration. The transmigrated cells were stained by crystal purple as well as DAPI for 8 h and 12 h respectively. The absolute cell numbers were counted and the migration rates of MSC were evaluated in each group. To explore the potential mechanisms which control the migration of MSC, the specific chemical inhibitors of MAPK pathway (SB203580, PD98059 and JNK inhibitor II) were added to the transwell system and the alteration of the MSC migration ability were evaluated at 12 h. The results showed that the migration ability at 8 h and 12 h of the ICAM-1-transfected MSC increased. Both absolute cell number and migration rate of MSC were significantly up-regulated by ICAM-1. Furthermore, the promoting effect of ICAM-1 on migration was partially suppressed by the inhibition of JNK/SAPK pathway. The transmigrated cell numbers and the migration rate decreased with the addition of JNK inhibitor II. However, the ICAM-1 promoting migration of MSC was not suppressed by the inhibitors for ERK/MAPK and p38/MAPK pathway did not work in the present study. It is concluded that ICAM-1 can induce mouse MSC migration in vitro, and the promoting effect is partially dependent on the activation of JNK/SAPK pathway.
