OBJECTIVES: Endocardial trabeculae undergo varicose changes and hyperplasia in response to hemodynamic influences and are a variable phenotype reflecting changes in disease. Fractal analysis has been used to analyze the complexity of endocardial trabeculae in a variety of cardiomyopathies. The aim of this paper was to quantify the myocardial trabecular complexity through fractal analysis and to investigate its predictive value for the diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) in patients with multivessel coronary artery disease (CAD). METHODS: The retrospective study population consisted of 97 patients with multivessel CAD, 39 of them were diagnosed with HFpEF, while 46 healthy volunteers were recruited as controls. Fractal dimension (FD) was obtained through fractal analysis of endocardial trabeculae on LV short-axis cine images. Logistic regression analyses were used to confirm the predictors and compare different prediction models. RESULTS: Mean basal FD was significantly higher in patients with HFpEF than in patients without HFpEF or in the healthy group (median: 1.289; IQR: 0.078; p < 0.05). Mean basal FD was also a significant independent predictor in univariate and multivariate logistic regression (OR: 1.107 and 1.043, p < 0.05). Furthermore, adding FD to the prediction model improved the calibration and accuracy of the model (c-index: 0.806). CONCLUSION: The left ventricular FD obtained with fractal analysis can reflect the complexity of myocardial trabeculae and has an independent predictive value for the diagnosis of HFpEF in patients with multivessel CAD. Including FD into the diagnostic model can help improve the diagnosis. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Differences show in the complexity of endocardial trabeculae in multivessel coronary artery disease patients, and obtaining fractal dimensions (FD) by fractal analysis can help identify heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) patients. KEY POINTS: The complexity of myocardial trabeculae differs among patients with multivessel coronary artery disease. Left ventricular fractal dimensions can reflect the complexity of the myocardial trabecular. Fractal dimensions have predictive value for the diagnosis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Increasing radical yields to reduce UV fluence requirement for achieving targeted removal of micropollutants in water would make UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) less energy demanding in the context of United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and carbon neutrality. We herein demonstrate that, by switching the UV radiation source from conventional low-pressure UV at 254 nm (UV254) to emerging Far-UVC at 222 nm (UV222), the fluence-based concentration of HO• in the UV/peroxydisulfate (UV/PDS) AOP increases by 6.40, 2.89, and 6.00 times in deionized water, tap water, and surface water, respectively, with increases in the fluence-based concentration of SO4•- also by 5.06, 5.81, and 55.47 times, respectively. The enhancement to radical generation is confirmed using a kinetic model. The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constants of 16 micropollutants by the UV222/PDS AOP in surface water are predicted to be 1.94-13.71 times higher than those by the UV254/PDS AOP. Among the tested water matrix components, chloride and nitrate decrease SO4•- but increase HO• concentration in the UV222/PDS AOP. Compared to the UV254/PDS AOP, the UV222/PDS AOP decreases the formation potentials of carbonaceous disinfection byproducts (DBPs) but increases the formation potentials of nitrogenous DBPs.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a complex disease that is influenced by environmental and genetic factors. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between coding variants in lipid metabolism-related genes and CAD in a Chinese Han population. METHODS: A total of 252 individuals were recruited for this study, including 120 CAD patients and 132 healthy control individuals. Rare and common coding variants in 12 lipid metabolism-related genes (ANGPTL3, ANGPTL4, APOA1, APOA5, APOC1, APOC3, CETP, LDLR, LIPC, LPL, PCSK9 and SCARB1) were detected via next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based targeted sequencing. Associations between common variants and CAD were evaluated by Fisher's exact test. A gene-based association test of rare variants was performed by the sequence kernel association test-optimal (SKAT-O test). RESULTS: We found 51 rare variants and 17 common variants in this study. One common missense variant, LIPC rs6083, was significantly associated with CAD after Bonferroni correction (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.29-0.76, p = 1.9 × 10- 3). Thirty-three nonsynonymous rare variants were identified, including two novel variants located in the ANGPTL4 (p.Gly47Glu) and SCARB1 (p.Leu233Phe) genes. We did not find a significant association between rare variants and CAD via gene-based analysis via the SKAT-O test. CONCLUSIONS: Targeted sequencing is a powerful tool for identifying rare and common variants in CAD. The common missense variant LIPC rs6083 confers protection against CAD. The clinical relevance of rare variants in CAD aetiology needs to be investigated in larger sample sizes in the future.

The control of emissions of short-chain hydrocarbons with different structures is critical for the petrochemical industry. Herein, three two-carbon-containing (C2) hydrocarbons, ethane, ethylene, and acetylene, were chosen as pollutants to study the effects of chemical structure of hydrocarbons on removal performance and microbial responses in biotrickling filters. Results showed that the removal efficiency (RE) of C2 hydrocarbons followed the sequence of acetylene > ethane > ethylene. When the inlet loading rate was 30 g/(m3·h) and the empty bed residence time was 60 s, the RE of ethane, ethylene, and acetylene was 57 ± 4.0 %, 49 ± 1.0 %, and 84 ± 2.7 %, respectively. The high water solubility resulted in the high removal of C2 hydrocarbons, while a low surface tension enhanced the removal of C2 hydrocarbons. Additionally, the microbial community, enzyme activity, and extracellular properties of microorganisms also contributed to the difference in C2 hydrocarbon removal. These results could be referred for the effective control of light hydrocarbon emissions.

OBJECTIVE: The spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) remains a significant cause of mortality and morbidity throughout the world. The purpose of this retrospective study is to develop multiple models for predicting ICH outcomes using machine learning (ML). METHODS: Between January 2014 and October 2021, we included ICH patients identified by computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and treated with surgery. At the 6-month check-up, outcomes were assessed using the modified Rankin Scale. In this study, four ML models, including Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Tree C5.0, Artificial Neural Network, Logistic Regression were used to build ICH prediction models. In order to evaluate the reliability and the ML models, we calculated the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR), diagnostic odds ratio (DOR). RESULTS: We identified 71 patients who had favorable outcomes and 156 who had unfavorable outcomes. The results showed that the SVM model achieved the best comprehensive prediction efficiency. For the SVM model, the AUC, accuracy, specificity, sensitivity, PLR, NLR, and DOR were 0.91, 0.92, 0.92, 0.93, 11.63, 0.076, and 153.03, respectively. For the SVM model, we found the importance value of time to operating room (TOR) was higher significantly than other variables. CONCLUSION: The analysis of clinical reliability showed that the SVM model achieved the best comprehensive prediction efficiency and the importance value of TOR was higher significantly than other variables.

Motivated by the recent experimental study on hydrogen storage in MXene multilayers [Liu et al., Nat. Nanotechnol. 16, 331 (2021)], for the first time we propose a workflow to computationally screen 23 857 compounds of MXene to explore the general relation between the activated H2 bond length and adsorption distance. By using density functional theory we generate a dataset to investigate the adsorption geometries of hydrogen on MXenes, based on which we train physics-informed atomistic line graph neural networks (ALIGNNs) to predict adsorption parameters. To fit the results, we further derived a formula that quantitatively reproduces the dependence of H2 bond length on the adsorption distance from MXenes within the framework of Pauling's resonating valence bond theory, revealing the impact of transition metal's ligancy and valence on activating dihydrogen in H2 storage.

Effective and affordable disinfection technology is one key to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6. In this work, we develop a process by integrating Far-UVC irradiation at 222 nm with free chlorine (UV222/chlorine) for rapid inactivation of the chlorine-resistant and opportunistic Aspergillus niger spores in drinking water. The UV222/chlorine process achieves a 5.0-log inactivation of the A. niger spores at a chlorine dosage of 3.0 mg L-1 and a UV fluence of 30 mJ cm-2 in deionized water, tap water, and surface water. The inactivation rate constant of the spores by the UV222/chlorine process is 0.55 min-1, which is 4.6-fold, 5.5-fold, and 1.8-fold, respectively, higher than those of the UV222 alone, chlorination alone, and the conventional UV254/chlorine process under comparable conditions. The more efficient inactivation by the UV222/chlorine process is mainly attributed to the enhanced generation of reactive chlorine species (e.g., 6.7 × 10-15 M of Cl•) instead of hydroxyl radicals from UV222 photolysis of chlorine, which is verified through both experiments and a kinetic model. We further demonstrate that UV222 photolysis damages the membrane integrity and benefits the penetration of chlorine and radicals into cells for inactivation. The merits of the UV222/chlorine process over the UV254/chlorine process also include the more effective inhibition of the photoreactivation of the spores after disinfection and the lower formation of chlorinated disinfection byproducts and toxicity.

An effective early diagnosis is important for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) management. This study reveals a novel RA detection method using bacteriorhodopsin as a photoelectric transducer, a light-driven proton pump in purple membranes (PMs). It was devised by covalently conjugating a PM monolayer-coated electrode with a citrullinated-inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 3 (ITIH3)542-556 peptide that recognizes the serum RA-associated autoantibodies. The direct serum coating decreased the photocurrents in the biosensor, with the reduction in the photocurrent caused by coating with an RA-patient serum that is significantly larger than that with a healthy-control serum (38.1% vs. 20.2%). The difference in the reduction in the photocurrent between those two serum groups widened after the serum-coated biosensor was further labeled with gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-conjugated anti-IgA (anti-IgA-AuNP) (53.6% vs. 30.6%). Both atomic force microscopic (AFM) and Raman analyses confirmed the sequential peptide, serum, and anti-IgA-AuNP coatings on the PM-coated substrates. The reductions in the photocurrent measured in both the serum and anti-IgA-AuNPs coating steps correlated well with the results using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits (Spearman rho = 0.805 and 0.787, respectively), with both a sensitivity and specificity close to 100% in both steps. It was shown that an RA diagnosis can be performed in either a single- or two-step mode using the developed biosensor.

In this study, we examined the impact of demyelinating and neuroinflammation on trigeminal neuralgia (TN) by utilizing models of chronic constriction injury to the infraorbital nerve (CCI). The CCI rats were treated with either VX-765 (an inhibitor of caspase-1) or a control solution of PBS/DMSO to observe the effects on neurobehavioral and neuropathological outcomes. The histochemical changes, pyroptosis-related proteins were assessed using immunohistochemistry, Elisa, and western blotting. RSC96 cells were pretreated with belnacasan (VX-765, an inhibitor of caspase-1), Gasdermin D(GSDMD)-targeting siRNAs, cobalt protoporphyrin (CoPP) or zinc protoporphyrin (Znpp) before being exposed to H2O2. Following these treatments, the Reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, cell viability, percentage of pyroptosis, pyroptosis-related proteins, nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and HO-1 level was measured. The scanning electron microscopy revealed increased ball-like bulge and membrane pore formation in the CCI group. In the CCI and CCI+ Vehicle groups, we found ROS level and expression of pyroptosis-related proteins increased. While, treatment with VX-765resulted in a decreased expression of GSDMD, IL-1, IL-18, and caspase-1 decreased. In the in-vitro study, RSC96 cells showed mild pyroptosis and overall mild edema after being exposed to H2O2. The ROS level, percentage of pyroptosis, pyroptosis-related proteins, Nrf2 and HO-1 level increased significantly in the H2O2 group. While, the percentage of pyroptosis and pyroptosis-related proteins decreased significantly in the H2O2 + VX-765 group, H2O2 + siRNA group, and H2O2 + VX-765 + siRNA group. After treatment with HO-1-inhibitor Znpp and HO-1-activator Copp, the percentage of pyroptosis and pyroptosis-related proteins increased and decreased significantly respectively. In conclusions, the pyroptosis of Schwann cell in the CCI model generated the demyelination of TN nerve. The ROS is an upstream event of NLRP3 inflammasome activation which induced eventual pyroptosis. The Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway could protect the H2O2-induced pyroptosis in RSC96 cells.

Ferroptosis is a newly identified type of programmed cell death that has been shown to contribute to the progression of septic cardiomyopathy. Although the role of miR-130b-3p as an oncogene that accelerates cancer progression by suppressing ferroptosis has been demonstrated, its role in the regulation of ferroptosis and cardiac injury in Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cardiomyopathy has not been fully clarified. In this study, we demonstrated that miR-130b-3p remarkably improved cardiac function and ameliorated morphological damage to heart tissue in LPS-induced mice. miR-130b-3p also improved cell viability and mitochondrial function and reduced the production of lipid ROS and ferroptosis in LPS-treated H9c2 cells. In addition, miR-130b-3p significantly upregulated GPX4 expression and suppressed ACSL4 activity in LPS-induced mouse heart tissue and H9c2 cells. Mechanistically, we used database analysis to locate miR-130b-3p and confirmed its inhibitory effects on the ferroptosis-related gene ACSL4 and autophagy-related gene PRKAA1 using a dual-luciferase reporter assay. In addition, we found that miR-130b-3p inhibited the activation of autophagy by downregulating the expression of the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway. Meanwhile, our results show that RAPA (an autophagy activator) reverses the protective effect of miR-130b-3p mimic against LPS-induced ferroptosis, while CQ (an autophagy inhibitor) plays a facilitative role, suggesting that miR-130b-3p plays an important role in the development of ferroptosis by regulating autophagy in vitro. The findings reveal a novel function of miR-130b-3p in attenuating ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes, providing a new therapeutic target for ameliorating septic cardiomyopathy injury.

Quantum simulation of different exotic topological phases of quantum matter on a noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) processor is attracting growing interest. Here, we develop a one-dimensional 43-qubit superconducting quantum processor, named Chuang-tzu, to simulate and characterize emergent topological states. By engineering diagonal Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) models, we experimentally demonstrate the Hofstadter butterfly energy spectrum. Using Floquet engineering, we verify the existence of the topological zero modes in the commensurate off-diagonal AAH models, which have never been experimentally realized before. Remarkably, the qubit number over 40 in our quantum processor is large enough to capture the substantial topological features of a quantum system from its complex band structure, including Dirac points, the energy gap's closing, the difference between even and odd number of sites, and the distinction between edge and bulk states. Our results establish a versatile hybrid quantum simulation approach to exploring quantum topological systems in the NISQ era.

OBJECTIVES: Entropy is a new late gadolinium enhanced (LGE) cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR)-derived parameter that is independent of signal intensity thresholds. Entropy can be used to measure myocardial tissue heterogeneity by comparing full pixel points of tissue images. This study investigated the incremental prognostic value of left ventricular (LV) entropy in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). METHODS: This study enrolled 337 participants with HCM who underwent 3.0-T CMR. The LV entropy was obtained by calculating the probability distribution of the LV myocardial pixel signal intensities of the LGE sequence. Patients who underwent CMR imaging were followed up for endpoints. The primary endpoint was defined as readmission to the hospital owing to heart failure. The secondary endpoint was the composite of the primary endpoint, sudden cardiac death and non-cardiovascular death. RESULTS: During the median follow-up of 24 months ± 13 (standard deviation), 43 patients who reached the primary and secondary endpoints had a higher entropy (6.20 ± 0.45, p < 0.001). The patients with increased entropy (≥ 5.587) had a higher risk of the primary and secondary endpoints, compared with HCM patients with low entropy (p < 0.001 for both). In addition, Cox analysis showed that LV entropy provided significant prognostic value for predicting both primary and secondary endpoints (HR: 1.291 and 1.273, all p < 0.001). Addition of LV entropy to the multivariable model improved model performance and risk reclassification (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: LV entropy assessed by CMR was an independent predictor of primary and secondary endpoints. LV entropy assessment contributes to improved risk stratification in patients with HCM. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: Myocardial heterogeneity reflected by entropy the derived parameter of LGE has prognostic value for adverse events in HCM. The measurement of LV entropy helped to identify patients with HCM who were at risk for heart failure and sudden cardiac death. KEY POINTS: • Left ventricular entropy can reflect myocardial heterogeneity in HCM patients. • Left ventricular entropy was significantly higher in HCM patients who reached endpoint events. • Left ventricular entropy helps to predict the occurrence of heart failure and death in HCM patients.

Hawking radiation is one of the quantum features of a black hole that can be understood as a quantum tunneling across the event horizon of the black hole, but it is quite difficult to directly observe the Hawking radiation of an astrophysical black hole. Here, we report a fermionic lattice-model-type realization of an analogue black hole by using a chain of 10 superconducting transmon qubits with interactions mediated by 9 transmon-type tunable couplers. The quantum walks of quasi-particle in the curved spacetime reflect the gravitational effect near the black hole, resulting in the behaviour of stimulated Hawking radiation, which is verified by the state tomography measurement of all 7 qubits outside the horizon. In addition, the dynamics of entanglement in the curved spacetime is directly measured. Our results would stimulate more interests to explore the related features of black holes using the programmable superconducting processor with tunable couplers.

Far-UVC radiation is an emerging tool for combating pathogenic microorganisms in water, but its vulnerability to water matrix components remains unclear. We herein report the critical impacts of nitrate during Far-UVC disinfection of water. Nitrate at environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5-10.0 mg-N L-1) significantly inhibits Escherichia coli inactivation by Far-UVC radiation at 222 nm, via prolonging the "lag phase" of inactivation and reducing the inactivation rate constants by 1.08-2.74 times, while it shows negligible impact on E. coli inactivation by UVC radiation at 254 nm. The inhibitory impact of nitrate on Far-UVC disinfection is attributed to its strong light-shielding effect. Although hydroxyl radicals and reactive nitrogen species are generated from Far-UVC photolysis of nitrate at high concentrations of 10-13 and ∼10-7 M, respectively, those radicals are unable to compensate for the light-shielding effect of nitrate on E. coli inactivation. Moreover, reactive nitrogen species lead to the formation of nitrogenous byproducts, which increase the genotoxicity of the water. The findings advance the fundamental photochemistry and radical chemistry of nitrate at 222 nm and provide useful insights to guide the operation of Far-UVC in treating nitrate-containing water.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of either flurbiprofen axetil or nalbuphine combined with retrobulbar block (RB) before surgery on postoperative pain control and enhanced recovery in day-care patients undergoing orbital implantation. METHODS: A total of 45 patients undergoing orbital implantation with general anesthesia were randomly divided into three groups: flurbiprofen axetil (1 mg/kg) combined with RB (group F), nalbuphine (0.1 mg/kg) combined with RB (group N), and placebo as normal saline with RB (group C). The primary outcome was the average pain score (numeric rating scale: 0-10) within the first 24 hours. Other outcomes including the peak pain score, paracetamol requirement, quality of recovery (QoR)-15, and adverse effects (AEs) were assessed. RESULTS: The average and peak pain scores within 24 hours after surgery in group F were significantly lower than in other groups ( p < 0.0167). Compared with group C, the NRS scores were significantly decreased at 2 and 4 hours in group F, and 2 hours in group N after surgery ( p < 0.0167), but without significant differences at other measured time points. The time to first paracetamol oral intake displayed a significant difference among the three groups ( p < 0.0167). CONCLUSION: Preemptive use of flurbiprofen axetil 1 mg/kg combined with RB is an optimal choice for multimodal analgesia for day-care patients undergoing orbital implantation in terms of efficient acute pain control, without impeding patient-enhanced recovery.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to detect early retinal microcirculation changes in prediabetic patients and investigate their correlation with clinical examinations. METHODS: Forty-seven prediabetic individuals, 29 controls, and 81 type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM) patients were enrolled in this study. A review of clinical data and spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD-OCTA) parameters of macular vessel diameter (VD), foveal avascular zone (FAZ), and macular vessel area density (VAD) was performed. RESULTS: Levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglycerides in prediabetes and T2DM groups were significantly higher than those in the control group. Urine microalbumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) was mildly and moderately increased in the prediabetes and T2DM groups, respectively. Estimated glomerular filtration rate of the three groups were within the normal range. SD-OCTA showed that VAD in the superficial macular area was decreased in the prediabetes group compared to the control group (p=0.01). The FAZ size, particularly in the deep layer, was expanded in the prediabetes group. In the deep retinal layer of the macular area, VD and FAZ size in the prediabetes group were larger than those in the control group. In the prediabetes group, the axial length was significantly correlated with macular VD and FAZ size (p<0.05), and ACR was correlated with FAZ size (p<0.05). Age had a negative correlation with VAD (p<0.01). ACR had a positive correlation with FAZ size (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Enlargement and irregularity of the FAZ area, deep capillary dilation, and decrease in VAD occur in the retina of prediabetes patients with mild kidney function impairment.

AIM: Caffeinated beverages are very popular across populations and cultures, but quantitative evidence of the acute effects of moderate coffee doses on retinal perfusion is sparse and contradicting. Thus, the aim of this randomized, cross-over and parallel-group design study was to investigate whether moderate consumption of coffee alters macular retinal capillary perfusion in young healthy individuals. METHODS: Twenty-seven young healthy individuals were recruited for this study. Acute changes in retinal microvasculature were assessed using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography angiography (SD-OCTA) at baseline, 0.5 h, and 2 h after intake of coffee, or water. Meanwhile, cerebral blood flow (CBF) and retina-choroid blood flow were evaluated in a parallel-group design (4 participants each in coffee or water group) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with pseudo-continuous arterial spin labeling sequences. RESULTS: Two hours after coffee intake, blood caffeine concentration increased from 0 to 5.05 ± 1.36 µg/mL. Coffee caused a significant decrease in retinal vessel diameter index (VDI) (19.05 ± 0.24 versus [vs] 19.13 ± 0.26; p < 0.001) and CBF in the frontal lobe (77.47 ± 15.21 mL/100 mL/min vs. 84.13 ± 15.55 mL/100 mL/min; p < 0.05) 2 h after intake. However, it significantly increased retina-choroid blood flow after 0.5 and 2 h (163.18 ± 61.07 mL/100 mL/min vs. 132.68 ± 70.47 mL/100 mL/min, p < 0.001, and 161.21 ± 47.95 vs. 132.68 ± 70.47; p < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: This is the first study to demonstrate the acute effects of daily dose coffee consumption on retinal capillary perfusion using SD-OCTA combinate with blood flow MRI. The findings imply that although moderate coffee intake caused a significant increase in retina-choroid blood flow, there was a significant acute decrease both in macular retinal capillary perfusion and CBF.

BACKGROUND: Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a complex disease that is influenced by environmental and genetic factors. Lipid levels are regarded as a major risk factor for CAD, and epigenetic mechanisms might be involved in the regulation of CAD development. This study was designed to investigate the association between the DNA methylation status of 8 lipid metabolism-related genes and the risk of CAD in the Chinese Han population. METHODS: A total of 260 individuals were sampled in this study, including 120 CAD cases and 140 normal healthy controls. DNA methylation status was tested via targeted bisulfite sequencing. RESULTS: The results indicated a significant association between hypomethylation of the APOC3, CETP and APOC1 gene promoters and the risk of CAD. Individuals with higher methylation levels of the APOA5 and LIPC gene promoters had increased risks for CAD. In addition, ANGPTL4 methylation level was significantly associated with CAD in males but not females. There were no significant differences in the methylation levels of the APOB and PCSK9 gene promoters between CAD patients and controls. CONCLUSIONS: The methylation status of the APOC3, APOA5, LIPC, CETP and APOC1 gene promoters may be associated with the development of CAD.

UVA photolysis of nitrite (NO2-) occurs in a number of natural and engineered aquatic systems. This study reports for the first time that pathogenic microorganisms can be effectively inactivated during the coexposure of UVA irradiation and NO2- under environmentally relevant conditions. The results demonstrated that more than 3 log inactivation of Escherichia coli K-12, Staphylococcus aureus, and Spingopyxis sp. BM1-1 was achieved by UVA photolysis of 2.0 mg-N L-1 of NO2- in synthetic drinking water and real surface water. The inactivation was mainly attributed to the reactive species generated from UVA photolysis of NO2- rather than UVA irradiation or NO2- oxidation alone. The inactivation was predominantly contributed by the reactive nitrogen species (NO2• and ONOO-/HOONO) instead of the reactive oxygen species (HO• or O2•-). A kinetic model to simulate the reactive species generation from UVA photolysis of NO2- was established, validated, and used to predict the contributions of different reactive species to the inactivation under various environmental conditions. Several advanced tools (e.g., D2O - labeling with Raman spectroscopy) were used to demonstrate that the inactivation by the UVA/NO2- treatment was attributed to the DNA destruction by the reactive nitrogen species, which completely suppressed the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) states and the reactivation of bacteria. This study highlights a novel process for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in water and emphasizes the critical role of reactive nitrogen species in water disinfection and purification.

Objectives: Recent surveys have paid insufficient attention to the psychological status of medical residents, but medical residents, as a special group of medical workers, need to be focused on. This study aimed to investigate medical residents' levels of social support, psychological resilience, and coping style, and explore the mediating role of psychological resilience, which can ultimately provide a new theoretical basis for improving medical residents' psychological status and quality of work and life. Methods: A total of 577 medical residents from China were investigated by an online questionnaire, using convenience sampling. Associations between social support, psychological resilience, and coping styles were assessed using Pearson correlation analysis. The mediating effect of psychological resilience was tested using SPSS Process. Results: Positive correlations between social support, psychological resilience and coping style were found (r = 0.474, P < 0.001; r = 0.473, P < 0.001; r = 0.353, P < 0.001). The mediating effect of psychological resilience in the relationship between social support and coping style was significant (95% CI: 0.168, 0.384), and accounted for 25.84%. Conclusion: Attention should be paid to the psychological status of medical residents, and social support and psychological flexibility can be used to increase the enthusiasm for their coping style and promote their mental health.
