RESUMEN

Chitosan has been widely used in biomedical fields due to its good antibacterial properties, excellent biocompatibility, and biodegradability. In this study, a pH-responsive and self-healing hydrogel was synthesized from 3-carboxyphenylboronic acid grafted with chitosan (CS-BA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The dynamic boronic ester bonds and intermolecular hydrogen bonds are responsible for the hydrogel formation. By changing the mass ratio of CS-BA and PVA, the tensile stress and compressive stress of hydrogel can controlled in the range of 0.61 kPa - 0.74 kPa and 295.28 kPa - 1108.1 kPa, respectively. After doping with tannic acid (TA)/iron nanocomplex (TAFe), the hydrogel successful killed tumor cells through the near infrared laser-induced photothermal conversion and the TAFe-triggered reactive oxygen species generation. Moreover, the photothermal conversion of the hydrogel and the antibacterial effect of CS and TA give the hydrogel a good antibacterial effect. The CS-BA/PVA/TAFe hydrogel exhibit good in vivo and in vitro anti-tumor recurrence and antibacterial ability, and therefore has the potential to be used as a powerful tool for the prevention of local tumor recurrence and bacterial infection after surgery.

RESUMEN

Wound healing is a complex physiological process involving hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation, and tissue remodeling. Therefore, there is an urgent need for suitable wound dressings for effective and systematical wound management. Polypeptide-based hydrogel bio-adhesives offer unique advantages and are ideal candidates. However, comprehensive reviews on polypeptide-based hydrogel bio-adhesives for wound healing are still lacking. In this review, the physiological mechanisms and evaluation parameters of wound healing were first described in detail. Then, the working principles of hydrogel bio-adhesives were summarized. Recent advances made in multifunctional polypeptide-based hydrogel bio-adhesives involving gelatin, silk fibroin, fibrin, keratin, poly-γ-glutamic acid, ɛ-poly-lysine, serum albumin, and elastin with pro-healing activities in wound healing and tissue repair were reviewed. Finally, the current status, challenges, developments, and future trends of polypeptide-based hydrogel bio-adhesives were discussed, hoping that further developments would be stimulated to meet the growing needs of their clinical applications.

RESUMEN

Oxidative stress is a biochemical process that disrupts the redox balance due to an excess of oxidized substances within the cell. Oxidative stress is closely associated with a multitude of diseases and health issues, including cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, inflammatory conditions, and aging. Therefore, the developing of antioxidant treatment strategies has emerged as a pivotal area of medical research. Hydrogels have garnered considerable attention due to their exceptional biocompatibility, adjustable physicochemical properties, and capabilities for drug delivery. Numerous antioxidant hydrogels have been developed and proven effective in alleviating oxidative stress. In the pursuit of more effective treatments for oxidative stress-related diseases, there is an urgent need for advanced strategies for the fabrication of multifunctional antioxidant hydrogels. Consequently, the authors' focus will be on hydrogels that possess exceptional reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species scavenging capabilities, and their role in oxidative stress therapy will be evaluated. Herein, the antioxidant mechanisms and the design strategies of antioxidant hydrogels and their applications in oxidative stress-related diseases are discussed systematically in order to provide critical insights for further advancements in the field.

RESUMEN

Biomaterials have drawn considerable attention in recent years because of environmental concerns. In this paper, several different poly(lactide)-b-poly(butadiene)-b-poly(lactide) (PLA-b-PB-b-PLA) triblock copolymers were synthesized by the bulk ring-opening polymerization of lactide initiated by flexible macro-initiator hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) by adjusting the ratio of HTPB to lactide and the optical isomer of lactide. Afterwards, a chain-extension reaction with hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) was carried out to prepare (PLA-b-PB-b-PLA) n multi-block copolymers with enhanced molecular weight. The structures and properties of these block copolymers were then characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), atomic force microscope (AFM) and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR). Toughening effect of the (PLA-b-PB-b-PLA) n multiblock copolymers on biodegradable poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) film was investigated and the blended film with higher (poly(d-lactide)-b-poly(butadiene)-b-poly(d-lactide)) n (PDLA-b-PB-b-PDLA) n loading (15 wt%) exhibited better toughness nearly without loss of the tensile strength. The mechanical properties of the (PLA-b-PB-b-PLA) n /PLLA blended film were proved to be influenced by the different isomers of PLA and rubbery PB chains.

RESUMEN

The recent development of micro-fabrication technologies has provided new methods for researchers to design and fabricate micro metal coils, which will allow the coils to be smaller, lighter, and have higher performance than traditional coils. As functional components of electromagnetic equipment, micro metal coils are widely used in micro-transformers, solenoid valves, relays, electromagnetic energy collection systems, and flexible wearable devices. Due to the high integration of components and the requirements of miniaturization, the preparation of micro metal coils has received increasing levels of attention. This paper discusses the typical structural types of micro metal coils, which are mainly divided into planar coils and three-dimensional coils, and the characteristics of the different structures of coils. The specific preparation materials are also summarized, which provides a reference for the preparation process of micro metal coils, including the macro-fabrication method, MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) processing technology, the printing process, and other manufacturing technologies. Finally, perspectives on the remaining challenges and open opportunities are provided to help with future research, the development of the Internet of Things (IoTs), and engineering applications.

RESUMEN

Sargentodoxa cuneata (Oliv.) Rehd. et Wils is a traditional Chinese medicine to treat acute appendicitis, rheumarthritis, abdominal pain, and painful menstruation for a long history. The investigation of S. cuneata led to the isolation and identification of twenty-three secondary metabolites, including two new compounds, sargentodoxosides A (1) and B (2), and twenty-one known ones (3-23). Their structural characterization was conducted by HRESIMS, 1 D and 2 D NMR spectra. All the isolated compounds were assayed for their agonistic activities against the farnesoid X receptor (FXR). Nine of the isolated compounds displayed significant agonistic effects against FXR at 0.1 µM, suggesting that they could be served as potential agents for the development of FXR agonists.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the characteristic computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) features of small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (SNEC) of paranasal sinuses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography (n = 8) and MR (n = 14) images and clinical findings from 14 patients with SNEC of paranasal sinuses were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Eight lesions were located in the ethmoidal sinus, 4 in the maxillary sinus, and 2 in the sphenoid sinus. Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the sphenoid sinus showed bilateral asymmetry patterns. On CT images, bony changes were visible in all 8 cases. On MR, 4 cases contained hemorrhage, and 10 cases contained cystic or necrotic areas. All cases demonstrated marked heterogeneous enhancement, with half showing a "cribriform-like" or "geographic" appearance. The nasal cavity was the most common site invaded by SNEC of paranasal sinuses, followed by the orbits. A time-signal intensity curve examination showed a washout-type pattern in all but 1 case. The mean ± SD apparent diffusion coefficient value was 0.702 ± 0.112 (×10-3 mm2/s). According to the Dulguerov staging system, 9 tumors were staged as N0 (1 T1, 1 T2, 5 T3, and 2 T4). The recurrence rate was 64.3%. CONCLUSIONS: Some characteristics of radiological findings can provide important clues for preoperative diagnosis.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Intravenous gadolinium injection (IV-method) can be used to visualize endolymphatic hydrops. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to use a three-dimensional inversion-recovery sequence with real reconstruction (3 D-real IR) sequence 4 h after the IV-method, images of the perilymph space were scored for endolymphatic hydrops in cases of suspected Meniere's disease (MD) in children to investigate its diagnostic value of MD in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected 28 suspected MD children aged ≤17 years old, all of whom underwent the IV-method. After 4 h, inner ear 3 D-real IR magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed and results were analyzed. RESULTS: Gadolinium contrast agent was seen distributed in the perilymphatic space with perilymphatic enhancement on 3 D-real IR MRI, allowing differentiation between the perilymphatic and endolymphatic spaces. Based on perilymph MRI diagnostic scoring, 64.3% (18/28) of the patients were categorized as having endolymphatic hydrops, who were followed and eventually diagnosed with confirmed MDs. CONCLUSIONS AND SIGNIFICANCE: Suspected MD children should undergo gadolinium-enhanced examinations of the inner ear while taking dynamic audiology examinations for the confirmed diagnosis.

RESUMEN

Low surface energy coatings have gained considerable attention due to their superior surface hydrophobic properties. However, their abrasion resistance and sustainability of surface hydrophobicity are still not very satisfactory and need to be improved. In this work, a series of utraviolet (UV)-curable fluorosiloxane copolymers were synthesized and used as reactive additives to prepare polyurethane acrylate coatings with low surface energy. The effect of the addition of the fluorinated graft copolymers on the mechanical durability and surface hydrophobicity of the UV-cured hybrid films during the friction-annealing treatment cycles was investigated. The results show that introducing fluorosiloxane additives can greatly enhance surface hydrophobicity of the hybrid film. With addition of 2 wt.% fluorosiloxane copolymers, the water contact angle (WCA) value of the hybrid film was almost tripled compared to that of the pristine PU film, increasing from 58° to 144°. The hybrid film also showed enhanced abrasion resistance and could withstand up to about 60 times of friction under a pressure of 20 kPa. The microstructure formed in the annealed film was found to contribute much to achieve better surface hydrophobicity. The polyurethane acrylate/fluorinated siloxane resin hybrid film prepared in this study exhibits excellent potential for applications in the low surface energy field.

RESUMEN

Low surface energy materials have attracted much attention due to their properties and various applications. In this work, we synthesized and characterized a series of ultraviolet (UV)-curable fluorinated siloxane polymers with various fluorinated acrylates-hexafluorobutyl acrylate, dodecafluoroheptyl acrylate, and trifluorooctyl methacrylate-grafted onto a hydrogen-containing poly(dimethylsiloxane) backbone. The structures of the fluorinated siloxane polymers were measured and confirmed by proton nuclear magnetic resonance and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Then the polymers were used as surface modifiers of UV-curable commercial polyurethane (DR-U356) at different concentrations (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 10 wt %). Among three formulations of these fluorinated siloxane polymers modified with DR-U356, hydrophobic states (91°, 92°, and 98°) were obtained at low concentrations (1 wt %). The DR-U356 resin is only in the hydrophilic state at 59.41°. The fluorine and siloxane element contents were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the results indicated that the fluorinated and siloxane elements were liable to migrate to the surface of resins. The results of the friction recovering assays showed that the recorded contact angles of the series of fluorinated siloxane resins were higher than the original values after the friction-annealing progressing.
