Impaired joint attention is a common feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), affecting social interaction and communication. We explored if group basketball learning could enhance joint attention in autistic children, and how this relates to brain changes, particularly white matter development integrity. Forty-nine autistic children, aged 4-12 years, were recruited from special education centers. The experimental group underwent a 12-week basketball motor skill learning, while the control group received standard care. Eye-tracking and brain scans were conducted. The 12-week basketball motor skill learning improved joint attention in the experimental group, evidenced by better eye tracking metrics and enhanced white matter integrity. Moreover, reduced time to first fixation correlated positively with decreased mean diffusivity of the left superior corona radiata and left superior fronto-occipital fasciculus in the experimental group. Basketball-based motor skill intervention effectively improved joint attention in autistic children. Improved white matter fiber integrity related to sensory perception, spatial and early attention function may underlie this effect. These findings highlight the potential of group motor skill learning within clinical rehabilitation for treating ASD.

BACKGROUND: Music has frequently been used in movement exercises to enhance health benefits. However, scientific evidence regarding the application of music to Tai Chi practice is limited. OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aims to understand how music has been used in Tai Chi practice and whether music could be applied to Tai Chi practice to help optimize its benefits. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, CNKI, and Weipu databases were searched. We included studies that compare Tai Chi practice experience or health outcomes between individuals practicing Tai Chi with music and those practicing Tai Chi without music. Studies published through September 2022 were identified. Two researchers (YD and YH) independently performed study selection and data extraction. Thematic analysis was used to summarize and categorize the findings of the included studies. RESULTS: Seven studies were included in this review. All 7 included studies are experimental studies. Practicing Tai Chi with music might lead to positive perceptions of Tai Chi practice (eg, motivation, concentration, enjoyment, compliance, and performance) and higher evaluations of Tai Chi instructional quality, especially for Tai Chi beginners. The effects of incorporating music into Tai Chi practice on health outcomes are inconclusive due to the heterogeneities of the sample size, and the intervention components, lengths, and frequencies of the included studies. CONCLUSIONS: Applying music to Tai Chi practice may result in positive Tai Chi practice experience and adherence, particularly for beginners, which could help improve the dissemination and implementation of Tai Chi interventions for public health. However, whether applying music to Tai Chi practice leads to synergetic effects on health outcomes needs further investigation.

The membrane process is an effective way to realize resource reutilization. Most membrane devices are made of cold-roll steel (CRS), which is easy to corrode when operating in acid conditions. Herein, the biodegradable surfactant dodecyl dimethyl betaine (BS-12) was used as the inhibitor to protect the CRS in the trichloroacetic acid (TCA) solution. The long-term stability membrane tests showed that adding BS-12 will not harm the membrane performance. The weight loss experiments proved that adding BS-12 with trace amount (10 mg·L-1) endowed the CRS with good inhibition efficiency (95.3 %). The electrochemical tests indicated that the mixed inhibitor- BS-12 works by inhibiting the anode and cathode simultaneously, and the polarization resistance increased to 21 times. The SEM, AFM, and CLSM tests proved that adding BS-12 enabled the CRS surface to remain stable. The FTIR and XPS tests proved that BS-12 adsorbed on the CRS surface via physical and chemical adsorption. The theoretical calculations proved the horizontal adsorption of BS-12 on the CRS surface and the existence of the electron transfer within the BS-12 and CRS. The BS-12 showed great potential in the CRS inhibition of the membrane separation and purification processing.

Introduction: With depression's growing global prevalence and substantial impact, effective prevention and management strategies are imperative. Our study aims to perform a thorough bibliometric analysis of existing research on the impact of exercise on depression. Methods: A comprehensive analysis of Web of Science Core Collection publications from 2000 to 2020 was performed, highlighting trends, themes, and influential authors. The study focused on subject categories, source journals, countries/regions, institutions, and prolific authors. Co-citation and keyword analyses revealed key themes, hotspots and the thematic evolution. Results: The multidisciplinary nature of this research is evident across psychiatry, psychology, neuroscience, and sports science. Specific populations such as women, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses were targeted. Mind-body exercises like yoga and tai chi gained prominence. Co-citation clusters showcased the evolution from early investigations on exercise's impact to recent dose-response and protocol studies. Conclusions: This bibliometric analysis provides insights into the dynamic field of exercise interventions for depression. It underscores the importance of individual differences, calls for guidelines considering comorbidities, and points towards future directions such as exploring mind-body exercise mechanisms and well-designed clinical trials. This study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the research landscape and informs future endeavors aimed at refining depression treatment through exercise interventions.

The diagnosis of Talaromyces marneffei infection in HIV-negative patients remains challenging. There is an urgent need for rapid and convenient methods to diagnose this complicated disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic efficiency of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) for talaromycosis in non-HIV-infected patients by comparing mNGS with traditional microbial culture. In total, 66 samples from 57 patients were analyzed via both mNGS and microbial culture. The ROC curve showed a sensitivity for mNGS of 97.22%, which was greater than that of microbial culture (61.11%). Samples from the respiratory tract, infectious skin lesions, and lymph nodes are recommended as routine samples for talaromycosis detection via mNGS. Furthermore, mNGS significantly reduced the diagnostic time compared to microbial culture. Overall, our study demonstrated that mNGS is a promising tool for rapid and accurate pathogenic detection in HIV-negative patients with talaromycosis.

Although empathy for pain plays an important role in positive interpersonal relationships and encourages engagement in prosocial behavior, it remains largely unknown whether empathy for pain could be effectively altered by psychophysiological techniques. This study aimed to investigate the impact of a single session of diaphragmatic breathing practice on empathy for pain and examine the potential mechanism involving interoceptive awareness. A total of 66 healthy participants were randomly assigned to the intervention group or the control group. The intervention group received a 15-minute diaphragmatic breathing (DB) practice with real-time biofeedback, while the control group was to gaze at a black screen at rest and not engaged in any other activities. Before and after the invention, all participants were instructed to evaluate the intensity and unpleasantness of empathy for pain while watching different pictures with pain or non-pain conditions. The Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness (MAIA) was then administered to measure interoceptive awareness. The results indicated a significant interaction between group and time with regard to empathy for pain and MAIA. The DB group showed a statistically significant decrease in both pain intensity and unpleasantness during the pain picture condition, as well as a noteworthy increase in MAIA scores. The control group did not demonstrate any substantial changes. More importantly, the regulation of attention, a dimension of MAIA, had a significant mediating effect on the impact of diaphragmatic breathing on reported unpleasantness. Diaphragmatic breathing could serve as a simple, convenient, and practical strategy to optimize human empathy for pain that warrants further investigation, which has important implications not only for individuals with impaired empathy for pain but also for the improvement of interoceptive awareness.

Although schizophrenia patients exhibit structural abnormalities in the striatum, it remains largely unknown for the role of the striatum subregions in the treatment response of antipsychotic drugs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between the striatal subregions and improved clinical symptoms in first-episode drug-naïve (FEDN) schizophrenia. Forty-two FEDN schizophrenia patients and 29 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. At baseline, the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) was used to assess the clinical symptoms of patients, MRI scanner was used to obtain anatomical images of patients and HCs. After 12-week stable doses of risperidone treatment, clinical symptoms were obtained in 38 patients and anatomical images in 26 patients. After 12 weeks of treatment, the left nucleus accumbens volume decreased, whereas the left pallidum volume increased in schizophrenia patients. The decreased left nucleus accumbens volume was positively correlated with cognitive factor improvement measured by PANSS. Intriguingly, greater left nucleus accumbens volume at baseline predicted greater cognitive improvements. Furthermore, the responders who had >50 % improvement in cognitive symptoms exhibited significantly greater baseline left nucleus accumbens volume compared to non-responders. The left striatum volume at baseline and after treatment predicted the cognitive improvements in FEDN schizophrenia, which could be a potential biomarker for the development of precision medicine approaches targeting cognitive function.

This work aimed to study the role and mechanism of SIRT5 regulation of ferroptosis in cerebral ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. A model of middle cerebral artery occlusion in rats was prepared using the method of thread occlusion. The ferroptosis inhibitor was injected intraperitoneally while the SIRT5 interfering lentivirus were injected into the brain, and neurological disorders were scored in the rats. TTC staining was used to detect infarct volume, and immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of SIRT5 in tissues. Rat hippocampal neuronal cells H19-7 were transduced with SIRT5 interfering lentivirus and ferroptosis was induced using erastin. The CCK8 detection kit was used to detect cell viability. Commercial kits were used to detect levels of iron ions, ROS, MDA, SOD, and inflammatory factor (TNF-α and IL-6) in brain tissue or cell supernatant. Western blot was used to detect the expression changes of ferroptosis related proteins GPX4, Nrf2, and HO-1 in tissues or cells. Compared with the sham group, the MCAO model group showed higher levels of neurological impairment score, increased cerebral infarction volume, iron ions, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress levels in rats. Compared with the MCAO group, the MCAO + fer-1 group exhibited lower levels of neurological impairment scores, cerebral infarction volume, decreased iron ions, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress levels in rats. Meanwhile, compared with the MCAO + DMSO/LV-shRNA group, the MCAO + fer-1/LV-shSIRT5 group showed a significant decrease in neurological impairment scores, cerebral infarction volume, iron ions, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress levels in rats. In vitro experiments have found that LV-shSIRT5 can prevent erastin-induced cell ferroptosis. In summary, SIRT5 regulates ferroptosis through the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling axis to participate in ischemia-reperfusion injury in ischemic stroke.

Currently, micro- and nanoplastics are the most concerning pollutants, which have been confirmed to exist in every stage of drinking water treatment process. Micro- and nanoplastics in drinking water have large specific surface areas, which could adsorb inorganic matter, organic matter, and microorganisms, thereby increasing their risk to human health. The adsorption and agglomeration behavior of micro- and nanoplastics on typical pollutants is called the "colloid pump effect." Focused on the micro- and nanoplastics in drinking water, the occurrence, colloid pump effect, and toxic effect on the human body and the effect of colloid pumps on the removal of micro- and nanoplastics were summarized and described. The results revealed that micro- and nanoplastics existed widely in source water, treated water, pipe network water, and tap water. The colloid pump effect of micro- and nanoplastics promoted their agglomeration with inorganic matter, organic matter, and microorganisms, which not only intensified the toxic effect of micro- and nanoplastics but also affected the removal effect. There were different viewpoints on the effect of coagulation and sedimentation on the removal of micro- and nanoplastics, and the removal effect of sand filters was limited. The advanced treatment was an efficient process to remove micro- and nanoplastics with a particle size smaller than 5 µm. The removal rate of micro- and nanoplastics could be effectively improved by exploring the mechanism of the colloid pump effect and its initiation conditions. Finally, from the perspective of the drinking water treatment process and colloid pump effect, the control of micro- and nanoplastics in drinking water was prospected in order to provide reference for reducing the occurrence and toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics in drinking water, ensuring drinking water quality safety and human health.

During the past decade, cognitive neuroscience has been calling for population diversity to address the challenge of validity and generalizability, ushering in a new era of population neuroscience. The developing Chinese Color Nest Project (devCCNP, 2013-2022), the first ten-year stage of the lifespan CCNP (2013-2032), is a two-stages project focusing on brain-mind development. The project aims to create and share a large-scale, longitudinal and multimodal dataset of typically developing children and adolescents (ages 6.0-17.9 at enrolment) in the Chinese population. The devCCNP houses not only phenotypes measured by demographic, biophysical, psychological and behavioural, cognitive, affective, and ocular-tracking assessments but also neurotypes measured with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of brain morphometry, resting-state function, naturalistic viewing function and diffusion structure. This Data Descriptor introduces the first data release of devCCNP including a total of 864 visits from 479 participants. Herein, we provided details of the experimental design, sampling strategies, and technical validation of the devCCNP resource. We demonstrate and discuss the potential of a multicohort longitudinal design to depict normative brain growth curves from the perspective of developmental population neuroscience. The devCCNP resource is shared as part of the "Chinese Data-sharing Warehouse for In-vivo Imaging Brain" in the Chinese Color Nest Project (CCNP) - Lifespan Brain-Mind Development Data Community ( https://ccnp.scidb.cn ) at the Science Data Bank.

Graphene oxide (GO) membranes with nanoconfined interlayer channels theoretically enable anomalous nanofluid transport for ultrahigh filtration performance. However, it is still a significant challenge for current GO laminar membranes to achieve ultrafast water permeation and high ion rejection simultaneously, because of the contradictory effect that exists between the water-membrane hydrogen-bond interaction and the ion-membrane electrostatic interaction. Here, we report a vertically aligned reduced GO (VARGO) membrane and propose an electropolarization strategy for regulating the interfacial hydrogen-bond and electrostatic interactions to concurrently enhance water permeation and ion rejection. The membrane with an electro-assistance of 2.5 V exhibited an ultrahigh water permeance of 684.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, which is 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than those of reported GO-based laminar membranes. Meanwhile, the rejection rate of the membrane for NaCl was as high as 88.7%, outperforming most reported graphene-based membranes (typically 10 to 50%). Molecular dynamics simulations and density-function theory calculations revealed that the electropolarized VARGO nanochannels induced the well-ordered arrangement of nanoconfined water molecules, increasing the water transport efficiency, and thereby resulting in improved water permeation. Moreover, the electropolarization effect enhanced the surface electron density of the VARGO nanochannels and reinforced the interfacial attractive interactions between the cations in water and the oxygen groups and π-electrons on the VARGO surface, strengthening the ion-partitioning and Donnan effect for the electrostatic exclusion of ions. This finding offers an electroregulation strategy for membranes to achieve both high water permeability and high ion rejection performance.

As an emerging pollutant of global concern, microplastics (plastics with size<5 mm) and heavy metals are widely found in freshwater environments. Microplastics migrate easily, are difficult to degrade, and have large specific surface areas. They can enrich a variety of pollutants such as heavy metals and greatly increase their potential harm to the environment and ecology. Firstly, the special environmental behavior of microplastics carrying heavy metals and migrating together in freshwater environments was defined as the "Trojan-horse effect." Then, the Trojan-horse effect and its mechanism of microplastics and heavy metals in the freshwater environment were summarized and expounded from four aspects:the source and distribution of microplastics in the freshwater environment, the enrichment effect of microplastics on heavy metals, the impact of microplastics and the heavy metal Trojan-horse effect on its migration behavior, and the biological impact of microplastics and the heavy metal Trojan-horse effect. The results showed that, as a wide range of non-point source pollutants, microplastics widely existed in freshwater environments. In freshwater environments, the adsorption degree of single metals was different in different environments. It was mainly affected by microplastics, metals, and environmental factors. There was competitive adsorption in the presence of multiple metal ions. The Trojan-horse effect of microplastics and heavy metals could also affect their co-transport behavior. The Trojan-horse effect of microplastics and heavy metals in the freshwater environment frequently exacerbated their toxicity to aquatic organisms. This study provides references for comprehensively understanding the Trojan-horse effect and its mechanism in microplastics and heavy metals in the freshwater environment, which could effectively reduce the ecological risk and impact on human health of microplastics and heavy metals in the freshwater environment.

Background: Our previous study has shown the cingulate cortex abnormalities in first-episode drug naïve (FEDN) schizophrenia patients with comorbid depressive symptoms. However, it remains largely unknown whether antipsychotics may induce morphometric change in cingulate cortex and its relationship with depressive symptoms. The purpose of this study was to further clarify the important role of cingulate cortex in the treatment on depressive symptoms in FEDN schizophrenia patients. Method: In this study, 42 FEDN schizophrenia patients were assigned into depressed patients group (DP, n = 24) and non-depressed patients group (NDP, n = 18) measured by the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD). Clinical assessments and anatomical images were obtained from all patients before and after 12-week treatment with risperidone. Results: Although risperidone alleviated psychotic symptoms in all patients, depressive symptoms were decreased only in DP. Significant group by time interaction effects were found in the right rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) and other subcortical regions in the left hemisphere. After risperidone treatment, the right rACC were increased in DP. Further, the increasing volume of right rACC was negatively associated with improvement in depressive symptoms. Conclusion: These findings suggested that the abnormality of the rACC is the typical characteristics in schizophrenia with depressive symptoms. It's likely key region contributing to the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of risperidone treatment on depressive symptoms in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: In advanced disease, breathlessness becomes severe, increasing health services use. Breathlessness triggered services demonstrate effectiveness in trials and meta-analyses but lack health economic assessment. METHODS: Our economic study included a discrete choice experiment (DCE), followed by a cost-effectiveness analysis modelling. The DCE comprised face-to-face interviews with older patients with chronic breathlessness and their carers across nine UK centres. Conditional logistic regression analysis of DCE data determined the preferences (or not, indicated by negative ß coefficients) for service attributes. Economic modelling estimated the costs and quality-adjusted life years (QALYs) over 5 years. FINDINGS: The DCE recruited 190 patients and 68 carers. Offering breathlessness services in person from general practitioner (GP) surgeries was not preferred (ß=-0.30, 95% CI -0.40 to -0.21); hospital outpatient clinics (0.16, 0.06 to 0.25) or via home visits (0.15, 0.06 to 0.24) were preferred. Inperson services with comprehensive treatment review (0.15, 0.07 to 0.21) and holistic support (0.19, 0.07 to 0.31) were preferred to those without. Cost-effectiveness analysis found the most and the least preferred models of breathlessness services were cost-effective compared with usual care. The most preferred service had £5719 lower costs (95% CI -6043 to 5395), with 0.004 (95% CI -0.003 to 0.011) QALY benefits per patient. Uptake was higher when attributes were tailored to individual preferences (86% vs 40%). CONCLUSION: Breathlessness services are cost-effective compared with usual care for health and social care, giving cost savings and better quality of life. Uptake of breathlessness services is higher when service attributes are individually tailored.

Terahertz (THz) refers to electromagnetic waves with frequency from 0.1 to 10 THz, which lies between millimeter waves and infrared light. This paper proposes an ultra-thin metasurface absorber which is perfectly suited to be the signal coupling part of terahertz focal plane array (FPA) detector. The absorptance of the proposed metasurface is higher than 80% from 4.46 to 5.76 THz (25.4%) while the thickness is merely 1.12 µm (0.018 λ). Since the metasurface absorber will be applied to terahertz FPA detector which requires planar array formation, it is divided into meta-atoms. Each meta-atom consists of the same unit cell layout, and air gaps are introduced between adjacent meta-atoms to enhance the thermal isolation, which is crucial for FPA detector to obtain desired imaging results. Due to the symmetrical layout of meta-atoms, absorptance keeps stable for different polarized waves, moreover, good absorptance could also be achieved for incidence angles range of ± 30 °. Spectral measurements show good agreement with the simulation. As a result, features of ultra-thin thickness, polarization insensitivity, and high absorptance make the proposed metasurface absorber well suited to highly efficient coupling of terahertz signals in FPA detector.

This work demonstrates that Rh(III)-catalyzed dual C(sp2)-H functionalization and C-O/C-N annulation of monoamide fumarates can produce pyrano[4,3-c]pyridine-1,5(6H)-diones in high yield (up to 82%) in a single step. The substrates of monoamide fumarates and acetylenes are structurally simple, readily available, and inexpensive. The additive AgSbF6 effectively raised the yields. On account of easier dehydrogenation of OH in the COOH group than NH in the amide group in the reaction, the process first undergoes C-O annulation and then is succeeded by C-N annulation.

Some organophosphate di-esters (di-OPEs) have been found to be more toxic than their respective tri-esters. The environmental occurrence of di-OPEs remains largely unclear. A total of 106 water samples, including 56 drinking water (bottled, barreled, and tap water) and 50 surface water (lake and river) samples were collected and analyzed for 10 organophosphate tri-esters (tri-OPEs) and 7 di-OPEs. The concentrations (range (median)) of ∑7di-OPE were 2.8-22 (9.7), 1.1-5.8 (2.6), 3.7-250 (120), 13-410 (220), and 92-930 (210) ng/L in bottled water, barreled water, tap water, lake water, and river water, respectively. In all types of water samples, tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate was the dominant tri-OPE compound. Diphenyl phosphate was the predominant di-OPE compound in tap water and surface water, while di-n-butyl phosphate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate was the dominant compound in bottled water and barreled water, respectively. Source analysis suggested diverse sources of di-OPEs, including industrial applications, effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plants, degradation from tri-OPEs during production/usage and under natural environmental conditions. The non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of OPEs were lower than the theoretical threshold of risk, indicating the human health risks to OPEs via drinking water consumption were negligible. More studies are needed to explore environmental behaviors of di-OPEs in the aquatic environment and to investigate ecological risks.

With the strict regulation of brominated flame retardants, organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been extensively used as replacements. Increasing concerns on OPEs have aroused due to their extensive distribution in the environment and humans, as well as their potential toxicities. Recent studies have demonstrated that some organophosphate di-esters are even more toxic than their respective tri-esters. This review summarized the current state of knowledge on the analytical methodologies (including sample collection and preparation, instrumental analysis, and the feasibility of each potential human matrix), as well as the occurrences of OPEs and/or their metabolites (m-OPEs) in various human matrices. Organophosphate esters are readily metabolized in human thus only limited studies reported their occurrences in blood and breast milk, whereas abundant studies are available regarding the occurrences of m-OPEs rather than OPEs in urine. Since none of the matrix is suitable all the time, appropriate matrix should be selected depending on the aims of biomonitoring studies, e.g., high throughput screening or body burden estimation. Biomonitoring with non-invasive matrices such as hair and/or nail is useful to screen specific populations that might be under high exposure risks while urine is more suitable to provide valuable information on body burden. In terms of urinary monitoring, specific biomarkers have been identified for some OPE compounds, including tri(2-butoxyethyl) phosphate, tri(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate, tri(2-chloroethyl) phosphate and tri(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate. Further studies are required to identify suitable urinary biomarkers for other OPE compounds, especially the emerging ones.
