BACKGROUND: Levodopa could induce orthostatic hypotension (OH) in Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. Accurate prediction of acute OH post levodopa (AOHPL) is important for rational drug use in PD patients. Here, we develop and validate a prediction model of AOHPL to facilitate physicians in identifying patients at higher probability of developing AOHPL. METHODS: The study involved 497 PD inpatients who underwent a levodopa challenge test (LCT) and the supine-to-standing test (STS) four times during LCT. Patients were divided into two groups based on whether OH occurred during levodopa effectiveness (AOHPL) or not (non-AOHPL). The dataset was randomly split into training (80%) and independent test data (20%). Several models were trained and compared for discrimination between AOHPL and non-AOHPL. Final model was evaluated on independent test data. Shapley additive explanations (SHAP) values were employed to reveal how variables explain specific predictions for given observations in the independent test data. RESULTS: We included 180 PD patients without AOHPL and 194 PD patients with AOHPL to develop and validate predictive models. Random Forest was selected as our final model as its leave-one-out cross validation performance [AUC_ROC 0.776, accuracy 73.6%, sensitivity 71.6%, specificity 75.7%] outperformed other models. The most crucial features in this predictive model were the maximal SBP drop and DBP drop of STS before medication (ΔSBP/ΔDBP). We achieved a prediction accuracy of 72% on independent test data. ΔSBP, ΔDBP, and standing mean artery pressure were the top three variables that contributed most to the predictions across all individual observations in the independent test data. CONCLUSIONS: The validated classifier could serve as a valuable tool for clinicians, offering the probability of a patient developing AOHPL at an early stage. This supports clinical decision-making, potentially enhancing the quality of life for PD patients.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to investigate whether dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI parameters and preoperative radiological features (DCER-Features) add value to the clinicopathologic model for predicting metachronous metastases in rectal cancer patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2014 to December 2020, 859 patients in the PACS system were retrospectively screened. Of the initial 722 patients with surgically confirmed rectal cancer and no synchronous metastases, 579 patients were excluded for various reasons such as lack of clinicopathological or radiological information. 143 patients were finally included in this study. And 73 Patients of them developed metachronous metastasis within five years. After stepwise multiple regression analyses, we constructed three distinct models. Model 1 was developed solely based on clinicopathological factors, and model 2 incorporated clinicopathological characteristics along with DCE-MRI parameters. Finally, model 3 was built on all available factors, including clinicopathological characteristics, DCE-MRI parameters, and radiological features based on rectal magnetic resonance imaging. The radiological features assessed in this study encompass tumor imaging staging, location, and circumferential resection margin (CRM) for primary tumors, as well as the number of visible lymph nodes and suspected metastatic lymph nodes. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and decision curve analysis (DCA) were conducted to evaluate whether the diagnostic efficiency was improved. RESULTS: The performance of model 3 (including clinicopathologic characteristics and DCER-Features) was the best (AUC: 0.856, 95% CI 0.778-0.886), whereas it was 0.796 (95% CI 0.720-0.828) for model 2 and 0.709 (95% CI 0.612-0.778) for model 1 (DeLong test: model 1 vs model 2, p = 0.004; model 2 vs model 3, p = 0.037; model 1 vs model 3, p < 0.001). The decision curves indicated that the net benefit of model 3 was higher than the other two models at each referral threshold. The calibration plot of the three models revealed an excellent predictive accuracy. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that DCER-Features have added value for the clinicopathological model to predict metachronous metastasis in patients with rectal cancers.

BACKGROUND: Diet significantly impacts Parkinson's disease (PD) with plausible biological hypotheses. Although the thesis has been explored in several human clinical trials, no current meta-analyses or reviews summarize the results. We examined the effect of intervention of dietary supplements, foods, and dietary patterns in treating PD. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis and systematic review of randomized and crossover studies published between 1989 and 26 June 2022, searching from PubMed, Embase, Medline, Scopus, Cochrane Library databases, and Chinese databases. Twenty-four studies were included in this review. RESULTS: The meta-analysis results show that dietary supplements intervention significantly increased the quantitative insulin sensitivity check index (QUICKI) [MD = 0.02, 95% CI (0.01, 0.02), p < 0.00001]. Dietary supplement intervention does not significantly affect the total Unified Parkinson Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) score and six-min walk test (6MWT) distance. We did not find evidence that dietary supplements or food intervention may minimize the UPDRS III score. However, systematic review results indicated that the Mediterranean, low-fat, and ketogenic diets significantly reduced the total UPDRS score; low-protein diets meaningfully mitigated motor symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis result displays that diet and diet supplements had a very modest but statistically significant impact on QUICKI but no effect on motor and non-motor symptoms in PD. The systematic review concludes that dietary patterns intervention may positively attenuate the overall symptoms of PD, including both motor and non-motor symptoms.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Shou Tai Wan (STW), a traditional Chinese medicine formula, has been historically used for the treatment of recurrent spontaneous abortion (RSA). Despite its long-standing usage, the exact mechanism underlying the therapeutic effects of STW remains unclear in the existing literature. AIMS OF THIS STUDY: To explore the Pharmacological Mechanism of STW on RSA. METHODS: A network pharmacological methodology was utilized to predict the active compounds and potential targets of STW, collect the RSA targets and other human proteins of STW, and analyze the STW related networks. The animal experiments were also performed to validate the effect of STW on RSA. RESULTS: The results of network analysis showed that STW may regulate PI3K/AKT, MAPK, FoxO signaling pathways and so on. Animal experiment established the RSA model with CBA/J × DBA/2 mice. It was found that STW can reduce the embryo absorption rate of RSA group (p < 0.05) and balance the expression of Th 1/Th2 type cytokines compared with the model group. After 14 days of administration, the decidual and placental tissues were taken and the CD4+ T cells were isolated, and the phosphorylation level of signaling pathway was detected by Springbio720 antibody microarray. This experiment found that STW can significantly up-regulate the phosphorylation levels of STAT3 and STAT6 proteins in the STAT signaling pathway, and down-regulating the phosphorylation level of STAT1 protein. STW also significantly up-regulated the phosphorylation levels of Raf1, A-Raf, Ask1, Mek1, Mek2, JKK1, ERK1, ERK2, c-fos, c-Jun and CREB proteins in the MAPK signaling pathway, and down-regulate the phosphorylation levels of MEK6 and IKKb proteins. Compared with the RSA group, the STW group increased the expression levels of ERK1/2 mRNA and proteins and p-ERK1/2 proteins, and there was a statistical difference (p < 0.05). This is consistent with the chip results. CONCLUSION: STW may achieve therapeutic effects by interfering with the signaling pathways, biological processes and targets discovered in this study. It provides a new perspective for revealing the immunological mechanism of STW in the treatment of RSA, and also provides a theoretical basis for the clinical use of STW in the treatment of RSA.

The purpose of this study was to determine the level of horizontal transmission of the blaCTX-M-65 gene and the role of its associated mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the bovine-derived Escherichia coli. After PCR identification, two plasmids carrying blaCTX-M-65 were successfully transferred to the recipient E. coli J53 Azr through conjugation assays and subsequently selected for Whole-Genome sequencing (WGS) analysis. The resistance profiles of these two positive strains and their transconjugants were also determined through antimicrobial susceptibility tests. Whole genome data were acquired using both the PacBio sequencing platform and the Illumina data platform. The annotated results were then submitted to the Genbank database for accession number recording. For comparison, the genetic environment of plasmids carrying the resistance gene blaCTX-M-65 was mapped using the Easyfig software. WGS analysis revealed Tn3-like composite transposons bearing blaCTX-M-65, blaTEM-1, and blaOXA-10 in the IncHI2-type plasmids of these two E. coli ST1508 strains. A phylogenetic tree was generated from all 48 assembled E. coli isolates blaCTX-M-65, blaTEM-1, and blaOXA-10 from the NCBI Pathogen Detection database with our two isolates, showing the relationships and the contribution of SNPs to the diversity between genetic samples. This study suggests that the transmissibility of blaCTX-M-65 on Tn3-like composite transposons contributes to an increased risk of its transmission in E. coli derived from dairy cattle.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the clinicopathological and radiological risk factors for postoperative peritoneal metastasis and develop a prediction model for the early detection of peritoneal metastasis in patients with colon cancer. METHODS: We included 174 patients with colon cancer. The clinicopathological and radiological data were retrospectively analyzed. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to identify risk factors for postoperative peritoneal metastasis. Based on these risk factors, a nomogram was developed. RESULTS: At a median follow-up of 63 months, 43 (24.7%) patients developed peritoneal metastasis. Six independent risk factors (hazards ratio [95% confidence interval]) were identified for postoperative peritoneal metastasis: abdominopelvic fluid (2.12 [1.02-4.40]; P = 0.04), longer maximum tumor length (1.02 [1.00-1.03]; P = 0.02), pN1 (2.50 [1.13-5.56]; P = 0.02), pN2 (4.45 [1.77-11.17]; P = 0.02), nonadenocarcinoma (2.75 [1.18-6.38]; P = 0.02), and preoperative carcinoembryonic antigen levels ≥5 ng/mL (3.08 [1.50-6.30]; P < 0.01). A clinicopathological-radiological model was developed based on these factors. The model showed good discrimination (concordance index, 0.798 [0.723-0.876]; P < 0.001) and was well-calibrated. CONCLUSIONS: The developed clinicopathological-radiological nomogram may assist clinicians in identifying patients at high risk of postoperative peritoneal metastasis.

Elevated detection rates of the blaCTX-M-55 gene in animals have been reported as a result of antibiotic misuse in clinics. To investigate the horizontal transfer mechanism of blaCTX-M-55 and its associated mobile genetic elements (MGEs), we isolated 318 nonrepetitive strains of Escherichia coli (E. coli) from bovine samples in Xinjiang and Gansu provinces, China. All E. coli strains were screened for the CTX-M-55 gene using PCR. The complete genomic data were sequenced using the PacBio triplet sequencing platform and corrected using the Illumina data platform. The genetic environment of the plasmids carrying the resistance blaCTX-M-55 gene was mapped using the software Easyfig2.2.3 for comparison. The results showed that all blaCTX-M-55-positive strains were resistant to multiple antibiotics. Five strains of Escherichia coli carry the blaCTX-M-55 gene, which is adjacent to other resistance genes and is located on the IncHI2-type plasmid. Four of the five blaCTX-M-55-harbor strains carried translocatable units (TUs). All the donor bacteria carrying the blaCTX-M-55 genes could transfer horizontally to the recipient (E. coli J53 Azr). This study demonstrates that the transmission of blaCTX-M-55 is localized on IS26-flanked composite transposons. The cotransmission and prevalence of blaCTX-M-55 with other MDR resistance genes on epidemic plasmids require enhanced monitoring and control.

Improving information transfer rate is a key to prompt the speed of outputting instructions of the event-related potential-based brain-computer interface. Our previous study designed a dual-stimuli interface that simultaneously presents two types of different stimuli to improve the speed. While, adding more stimuli into this interface makes subject easily affected by "flanker effect" that decreases the accuracy of recognizing intention. To achieve high recognition accuracy with many stimuli, this study proposes a dual stimuli interface based on whole flash and local move (DS-WL) and two rules of stimulus arrangement to induce the brain signals. Twenty subjects participated in the experiment, and their signals are recognized by a back propagation neural network classifier. The local move induces larger and later signals of targets to help discriminate the two kinds of stimuli; the rules reduce the N200 and P300 amplitudes of non-target, which improves accuracy. This study demonstrates that the DS-WL is a useful way to shorten the instruction output cycle and speed up the instructions outputting by local move and rules.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) is the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease, resulting in a huge socio-economic impact. Kidney is a highly complex organ and the pathogenesis underlying kidney organization involves complex cell-to-cell interaction within the heterogeneous kidney milieu. Advanced single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) could reveal the complex architecture and interaction with the microenvironment in early DKD. We used scRNA-seq to investigate early changes in the kidney of db/m mice and db/db mice at the 14th week. Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection were applied to classify cells into different clusters at a proper resolution. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis was used to identify the key molecules specifically expressed in kidney tubules. Information of cell-cell communication within the kidney was obtained using receptor-ligand pairing resources. In vitro model, human subjects, and co-detection by indexing staining were used to identify the pathophysiologic role of the hub genes in DKD. Among four distinct subsets of the proximal tubule (PT), lower percentages of proliferative PT and PT containing AQP4 expression (PTAQP4+) in db/db mice induced impaired cell repair activity and dysfunction of renin-angiotensin system modulation in early DKD. We found that ferroptosis was involved in DKD progression, and ceruloplasmin acted as a central regulator of the induction of ferroptosis in PTAQP4+. In addition, lower percentages of thick ascending limbs and collecting ducts with impaired metabolism function were also critical pathogenic features in the kidney of db/db mice. Secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) mediated pathogenic cross-talk in the tubular microenvironment, as validated by a correlation between urinary SPP1/Cr level and tubular injury. Finally, mesangial cell-derived semaphorin 3C (SEMA3C) further promoted endothelium-mesenchymal transition in glomerular endothelial cells through NRP1 and NRP2, and urinary SEMA3C/Cr level was positively correlated with glomerular injury. These data identified the hub genes involved in pathophysiologic changes within the microenvironment of early DKD.

In order to improve the traditional common space pattern (CSP) algorithm pattern in EEG feature extraction, this study proposes a feature extraction method of EEG signals based on permutation conditional mutual information common space pattern (PCMICSP), which used the sum of the permutation condition mutual information matrices of each lead to replacing the mixed spatial covariance matrix in the traditional CSP algorithm, and its eigenvectors and eigenvalues are used to construct a new spatial filter. Then the spatial features in the different time domains and frequency domains are combined to construct the two-dimensional pixel map, Finally, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is used for binary classification. The EEG signals of 7 community elderly before and after spatial cognitive training in virtual reality (VR) scenes were used as the test data set. The average classification accuracy of the PCMICSP algorithm for pre-test and post-test EEG signals is 98%, which was higher than that of CSP based on CMI (conditional mutual information), CSP based on MI (mutual information), and traditional CSP in the combination of four frequency bands. Compared with the traditional CSP method, PCMICSP can be used as a more effective method to extract the spatial features of EEG signals. Therefore, this paper provides a new approach to solving the strict linear hypothesis of CSP and can be used as a valuable biomarker for the spatial cognitive evaluation of the elderly in the community.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVE: To identify the radiological features and clinical biomarkers that could predict the occult metastasis (OM) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included PDAC patients who were radiologically diagnosed resectable (R) or borderline resectable (BR) and underwent surgical exploration from January 2018 to December 2021. Depending on whether distant metastases were found during the exploration, patients were divided into OM and non-OM groups. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to determine the radiological and clinical predictive factors for occult metastasis. Model performance was determined by discrimination and calibration. RESULTS: A total of 502 patients (median age, 64 years; interquartile range, 57-70 years; 294 men) were enrolled, among which 68 (13.5%) patients were found with distant metastases, with 45 liver-only, 19 peritoneal-only, four patients had both liver and peritoneal metastases. Rim enhancement and peripancreatic fat stranding were more frequent in the OM group than in the non-OM group. Tumor size (p = 0.028), tumor resectability (p = 0.031), rim enhancement (p < 0.001), peripancreatic fat stranding (p < 0.001) and level of CA125 (p = 0.021) were independent predictors of occult metastasis according to the multivariable analyses, and the areas under the curve (AUCs) of these characteristics were 0.703, 0.594, 0.638, 0.655, 0.631, respectively. The combined model showed the highest AUC of 0.823. CONCLUSIONS: Rim enhancement, peripancreatic fat stranding, tumor size, tumor resectability and level of CA125 are risk factors for OM of PDAC. The combined model of radiological and clinical features may help the preoperative prediction of OM in PDAC.

Background: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) therapy may experience further damage to the vascular endothelium, leading to increased inflammatory response and in-stent thrombosis. In many clinical studies, sodium tanshinone IIA sulfonate injection (STS) has been found to reduce inflammatory factors and enhance vascular endothelial function in patients with ACS while improving the prognosis of PCI. However, to date, there has been no systematic review assessing the effectiveness and safety of STS on inflammatory factors and vascular endothelial function. Purpose: The aim of this study is to systematically review the effects of STS on inflammatory factors and endothelial function in patients with ACS treated with PCI. Methods: Until October 2022, eight literature databases and two clinical trial registries were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating STS treatment for ACS patients undergoing PCI. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane Risk Assessment Tool 2.0. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Results: Seventeen trials met the eligibility criteria, including 1,802 ACS patients undergoing PCI. The meta-analysis showed that STS significantly reduced high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels (mean difference [MD = -2.35, 95% CI (-3.84, -0.86), p = 0.002], tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels (standard mean difference [SMD = -3.29, 95%CI (-5.15, -1.42), p = 0,006], matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) levels [MD = -16.24, 95%CI (-17.24, -15.24), p < 0.00001], and lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels [MD = -2.32, 95%CI (-2.70, -1.93), p < 0.00001], and increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels [SMD = 1.46, 95%CI (0.43, 2.49), p = 0,006] in patients with ACS. In addition, STS significantly decreased the incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (relative risk = 0.54, 95%CI [0.44, 0.66], p < 0.00001). The quality of evidence for the outcomes was assessed to be very low to medium. Conclusion: STS can safely and effectively reduce the levels of hs-CRP, TNF-α, MMP-9, and LPO and increase the level of SOD in patients with ACS treated with PCI. It can also reduce the incidence of adverse cardiovascular events. However, these findings require careful consideration due to the small number of included studies, high risk of bias, and low to moderate evidence. In the future, more large-scale and high-quality RCTs will be needed as evidence in clinical practice.

Numerous applications of Ag nanoparticles (AgNPs) have increased the likelihood of their release and accumulation in agroecosystem. Thus far, few studies have evaluated the impacts of AgNPs to soil methane emissions and the microbial dynamics. In this study, microcosmic experiments were conducted to investigate the responses of methanogenic processes from two paddy soils (Cambisols and Ultisols) subjected to four AgNPs doses (0.1, 1, 10 and 50 mg/kg). The results showed that 0.1 and 1 mg/kg AgNPs had no significant effects on CH4 emissions, but 50 mg/kg AgNPs increased soil CH4 emissions in both paddy soils. The aggravation effect of AgNPs on CH4 emissions was more apparent in Ultisols compared to Cambisols paddy soils. Real-time PCR suggested that 50 mg/kg AgNPs significantly increased the ratio of methanogenic to bacterial gene for both paddy soils. Amplicon sequencing indicated that methanogenic community was clustered into a separate group after 50 mg/kg AgNPs exposure. Structural equation model illustrated that Methanosarcinales was both significantly responded to AgNPs in Cambisols and Ultisols soils; however, Methanocellales significantly responded to AgNPs only in Cambisols soils. Subsequently, uncontrolled use of AgNPs may account as an environmental risk due to the potentially increased soil CH4 emissions in paddy ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is an increasing threat to human health and regarded to be the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Exosomes delivery may play a key role in cross-talk among kidney cells and the progression of DN. However, the mechanisms underlying exosomes in DN remain unclear. METHODS: The cross-disciplinary study, including in vivo, in vitro, and human studies was conducted to explore the cross-talk between proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) and mesangial cells (MCs) in DN. We purified exosome from PTECs treated with high glucose and db/db mice and assessed their influences in the pathologic change of MCs and downstream signal pathway. Healthy individuals and type 2 diabetic patients were enrolled to examine the role of exosomes in clinical applications. RESULTS: High glucose stimulated PTECs to secrete exosomal miR-92a-1-5p, which was taken-up by glomerular MCs, inducing myofibroblast transdifferentiation (MFT) in vitro and in vivo. PTEC-released exosomal 92a-1-5p decreased reticulocalbin-3 expression, leading to endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress by downregulating genes essential for ER homeostasis including calreticulin and mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor. Treatment with miR-92a-1-5p inhibitor ameliorated kidney damage in db/db mice with DN. Urinary miR-92a-1-5p could predict kidney injury in type 2 diabetic patients. CONCLUSIONS: PTEC-derived exosomal miR-92a-1-5p modulated the kidney microenvironment in vivo and in vitro models, which altered ER stress and MFT in MCs resulting in DN progression. Further blocking miR-92a-1-5p epigenetic regulatory network could be a potential therapeutic strategy to prevent the progression of DN. Video Abstract.


Diabetic nephropathy (DN) has been the leading cause of end-stage renal disease worldwide. Exosomes play a principle role in cross-talk of kidney cells and further affect the onset or progression of DN. This study firstly demonstrated the communication between proximal tubular epithelial cells (PTECs) and mesangial cells (MCs) through exosome transmission. PTEC-released exosomal 92a-1-5p induced endoplasmic reticulum stress and epithelial-mesenchymal transition in MCs through reticulocalbin-3 modulation. Kidney damage was rescued in DN mice after treatment with miR-92a-1-5p inhibitor. Moreover, urinary exosomal miR-92a-1-5p could predict DN progression in type 2 diabetic patients. These findings prove the impact of exosomal miR-92a-1-5p on pathophysiologic mechanisms and its potential use in clinical care and prediction of DN.

BACKGROUND: Although the Job Content Questionnaire (JCQ-22) has been translated into numerous languages and applied in various countries, its cultural applicability in China remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To adjust the JCQ-22 for cross-cultural use and optimize the scoring method for suitability for Chinese working populations. METHODS: We first used the original JCQ-22 questionnaire to measure occupational stress. Cross-cultural adjustment involved reorganization of scale items (adjusted-I scale) and deletion of inefficient redundant items during reorganization of scale items (adjusted-II scale). Structural validity and the relationship between stress and health outcomes (insomnia and self-conscious symptoms) before and after adjustment were compared. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis revealed that the two-factor cumulative variance contribution rate of job demand and control of the adjusted-II scale was 52.47%, compared with 48.44% and 48.44% in the original version and adjusted-I scale, respectively. Among the 16 fitness indicators in confirmatory factor analysis, 9 items of the adjusted-II scale met the standard, compared with 4 items of the original and adjusted-I scales. The Pearson's correlation coefficients between occupational stress and insomnia as well as self-conscious symptoms from the adjusted-II scale were 0.15 and 0.32, respectively, which were higher than those of the original scale (0.10 and 0.20). Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the adjusted-II scale exhibited a better area under the curve and Youden index values than the original scale. CONCLUSION: The adjusted-II scale exhibited superior structural validity with more reasonable health outcome predictions and fewer items, making it more suitable for measuring occupational stress in Chinese populations.

ABSTRACTThe results of treatment effect of vitamin or antioxidant intake on diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) was inconsistent. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to examine whether these supplements are effective in DPN treatment. We searched seven databases from inception to October 2021. All RCTs of DPN treatments with vitamin and antioxidant supplements were included. We performed sensitivity and subgroup analysis, and also tested for publication bias by the funnel plot and Egger's test. A total of 14 studies with 1384 patients were included in this systematic review. Three high-quality trials showed that vitamin and antioxidant supplements significantly increased sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) of the sural nerve (MD = 2.66, 95%CI (0.60, 4.72), P < 0.05, I2 = 0%). Seven studies (758 participants) suggested that these supplements might have improvement on motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) of the peroneal nerve in DPN patients with the random-effect model (MD = 0.60, 95%CI (0.28, 0.92), P < 0.05, I2 = 65%). In four studies, these supplements could have improved on MNCV of the median nerve with the fixed-effect model (MD = 4.22, 95%CI (2.86, 5.57), P < 0.05, I2 = 0%). However, ten studies (841 participants) have suggested that vitamin and antioxidant supplements have not decreased glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Vitamin and antioxidant supplements may improve the conduction velocity of nerves, including median, sural and peroneal nerves of patients with DPN. But these supplements have not decreased HbA1c in DPN patients. Several trials with a large sample size are needed to provide evidence support for clinical practice in the future.

Introduction: With the increasing number of children's publications that integrate new media technologies in the global publishing community, understanding the adoption and use of these publications from a child's perspective is of great significance for both children's education practitioners and the publishing industry. Methods: This article integrates a dual-effect path based on the utilitarian-motivation system (UMS) and hedonic-motivation system (HMS) on information technology adoption via a questionnaire, systematically demonstrating the psychological mechanism of children's reading with respect to integrated books. Results: This study finds that children's willingness to use integrated children's books is related to UMS and HMS except for facilitating conditions. In addition, this study also reveals the structural differences existing in the adoption psychology of children from various age groups and home education backgrounds. Discussion: This study provides a systematic explanation for understanding the adoption psychology of integrated children's books. Based on these findings, it is suggested that publishers should balance the concepts of education orientation and child orientation when producing children's books, conduct technical innovation of children's books according to individual children, and constantly innovate the service mode to avoid the risk of children's bad reading.

Iron intervention is not always safe and effective to correct iron deficiency. Host iron absorption stimulation is emerging as a promising adjunctive/alternative treatment. Here, porcine collagen hydrolysate (CH) and collagen-derived dipeptide prolyl-hydroxyproline, rather than collagen amino acids, namely, glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, were found to increase cellular iron reduction, absorption, and transportation, to upregulate duodenal cytochrome b (Dcytb), divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1), ferroportin (FPN), and hephaestin, and to nongenomically activate hypoxia-inducible factor-2α signaling in polarized Caco-2 cells. Prolyl-hydroxyproline showed both competitive and uncompetitive inhibition of recombinant human prolyl hydroxylase-3 activity with EC50 and Ki values of 10.62 and 6.73 µM, respectively. Docking simulations revealed collagen peptides as iron chelators and/or steric hindrances for prolyl hydroxylase-3. CH and prolyl-hydroxyproline acutely increased duodenal hypoxia-inducible factor-2α stability and Dcytb, DMT1, FPN, and hephaestin transcription in rats. Overall, collagen peptides act as a hypoxia-inducible factor-2α-stabilizing prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor to stimulate intestinal iron absorption.

A new antibacterial strategy based on inhibiting bacterial quorum sensing (QS) has emerged as a promising method of attenuating bacterial pathogenicity and preventing bacterial resistance to antibiotics. In this study, we screened Echinatin (Ech) with high-efficiency anti-QS from 13 flavonoids through the AI-2 bioluminescence assay. Additionally, crystal violet (CV) staining combined with confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) was used to evaluate the effect of anti-biofilm against Escherichia coli (E. coli). Further, the antibacterial synergistic effect of Ech and marketed antibiotics were measured by broth dilution and Alamar Blue Assay. It was found that Ech interfered with the phenotype of QS, including biofilm formation, exopolysaccharide (EPS) production, and motility, without affecting bacterial growth and metabolic activity. Moreover, qRT-PCR exhibited that Ech significantly reduced the expression of QS-regulated genes (luxS, pfs, lsrB, lsrK, lsrR, flhC, flhD, fliC, csgD, and stx2). More important, Ech with currently marketed colistin antibiotics (including colistin B and colistin E) showed significantly synergistically increased antibacterial activity in overcoming antibiotic resistance of E. coli. In summary, these results suggested the potent anti-QS and novel antibacterial synergist candidate of Ech for treating E. coli infections.
