RESUMEN

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical condition and is associated with unacceptable morbidity and mortality. Obtusifolin is an anthraquinone extracted from the seeds of Cassia obtusifolia with anti-inflammatory properties. This study focused on the role and mechanism of obtusifolin in AKI. The mouse podocyte cell line MPC5 was exposed to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to establish a cell model of AKI. The viability of MPC5 cells treated with obtusifolin and/or LPS was detected by 3-(4, 5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by flow cytometry. The levels of podocyte injury- and apoptosis-related proteins as well as the nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) signaling pathway was examined using western blotting analysis. The renal protective effects of obtusifolin were determined using an LPS-induced mouse model of AKI. Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels were measured. Hematoxylin-eosin staining of kidney sections was performed to evaluate renal histology. We found that MPC5 cells treated with LPS showed suppressed cell viability (p < 0.01) and increased cell apoptosis (p < 0.001). LPS reduced the protein expression of Bcl-2, nephrin, and synaptopodin as well as increased the protein levels of Bax and Cleaved Caspase-3 in podocytes in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.01). In addition, 10 µg/ml LPS-repressed cell viability was rescued by obtusifolin in a concentration-dependent manner (p < 0.01). Moreover, LPS-induced increase in MPC5 cell apoptosis was reversed by obtusifolin treatment (p < 0.01). Obtusifolin administration ameliorated LPS-induced kidney injury and reduced blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine levels in mice (p < 0.001). Additionally, obtusifolin inhibited LPS-induced activation of NF-κB signaling in vitro and in vivo (p < 0.01). Overall, obtusifolin was effective in protecting renal function against LPS-induced AKI via inactivation of NF-κB signaling, which suggested that obtusifolin may act as a valuable agent for AKI therapy.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is an acute renal complication that occurs after intravascular contrast agent administration. Sodium selenite (SS) is an inorganic source of Se and has potent antioxidant properties. This study intends to examine its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in CI-AKI. METHODS: A rat CI-AKI model was established with the pretreatment of SS (0.35 mg/kg). Hematoxylin-eosin staining was employed for histopathological analysis of rat kidney specimens. Biochemical analysis was conducted for renal function detection. Tissue levels of oxidative stress-related markers were estimated. Reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction revealed the mRNA levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Western blotting showed the Nrf2 signaling-related protein expression in the rat kidney. RESULTS: SS administration alleviated the renal pathological changes and reduced the serum levels of serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, cystatin C, and urinary level of kidney injury molecule-1 in CI-AKI rats. SS attenuated oxidative stress and inflammatory response in CI-AKI rat kidney tissues. SS activated the Nrf2 signaling transduction in the renal tissues of rats with CI-AKI. CONCLUSION: SS ameliorates CI-AKI in rats by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation via the Nrf2 signaling.

Gastrointestinal symptoms constitute a frequent complication in postoperative patients with valvular heart disease (VHD), impacting their postoperative recovery. Probiotics contribute to regulating human gut microbiota balance and alleviating postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms. Our objective involved assessing the potential of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis LPL-RH to alleviate postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms and expedite patient recovery. Adult patients diagnosed with VHD scheduled for valve surgery were enrolled. 110 patients were randomly divided into two groups and received LPL-RH or a placebo for 14 days. Gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated using the Gastrointestinal Symptoms Questionnaire. An analysis of the time to recovery of bowel function and various postoperative variables was conducted in both study groups. Variations in the intestinal microbiota were detected via 16S rRNA sequencing. The study was completed by 105 participants, with 53 in the probiotic group and 52 in the placebo group. Compared to the placebo group, LPL-RH significantly reduced the total gastrointestinal symptom score after surgery (p = 0.004). Additionally, LPL-RH was found to significantly reduce abdominal pain (p = 0.001), bloating (p = 0.018), and constipation (p = 0.022) symptom scores. Furthermore, LPL-RH dramatically shortened the time to recovery of bowel function (p = 0.017). Moreover, LPL-RH administration significantly enhanced patients' postoperative nutrition indexes (red blood cell counts, hemoglobin level, p < 0.05). Microbiome analysis showed that the composition and diversity of the postoperative intestinal microbiota differed between the probiotic and placebo groups. No adverse incidents associated with probiotics were documented, emphasizing their safety. This study initially discovered that oral B. animalis subsp. lactis LPL-RH can assist in regulating intestinal microbiota balance, alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms, promoting intestinal function recovery, and enhancing nutrition indexes in patients with VHD after surgery. Regulating the intestinal microbiota may represent a potential mechanism for LPL-RH to exert clinical benefits.

OBJECTIVE: Systematic evaluation of the safety of del Nido cardioplegia compared to cold blood cardioplegia in adult cardiac surgery. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, EMbase, The Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomized clinical trials (published by 14 January 2024) comparing del Nido cardioplegia to cold blood cardioplegia in adult. Our main endpoints were myocardial injury markers and clinical outcomes. We assessed pooled data by use of a random-effects model or a fixed-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 10 studies were identified, incorporating 889 patients who received del Nido cardioplegia and 907 patients who received cold blood cardioplegia. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with the cold blood cardioplegia, the del Nido cardioplegia had less volume of cardioplegia, higher rate of spontaneous rhythm recovery after cross clamp release, lower levels of postoperative cardiac troponin T and creatinine kinase-myocardial band, all of which were statistically significant. However, there was no statistically significant difference in postoperative troponin I and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction. The clinical outcomes including mechanical ventilation time, intensive care unit stay time, hospital stay time, postoperative stroke, postoperative new-onset atrial fibrillation, postoperative heart failure requiring intra-aortic balloon pump mechanical circulation support, and in-hospital mortality of both are comparable. CONCLUSION: Existing evidence suggests that del Nido cardioplegia reduced volume of cardioplegia administration and attempts of defibrillation. The superior postoperative results in CTnT and CK-MB may provide a direction for further research on improvement of the composition of cardioplegia.

PURPOSE: Podocyte injury plays a crucial role in the development of diabetic nephropathy (DN). A high serum level of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) has been observed in patients with DN. This paper is to study the role and mechanism of IGF-1 in high glucose (HG)-induced podocyte injury. METHODS: Mouse podocytes MPC-5 were treated with HG to establish a DN model in vitro. db/db diabetic mice and db/m nondiabetic mice were used to evaluate the IGF-1 role in vivo. Western blotting was used for measuring protein levels of IGF-1 receptor, Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) signalling pathway-related markers, podocyte markers podocin and nephrin, apoptosis- and autophagy-related markers in MPC-5 cells. Immunofluorescence staining was implemented for measuring the expression of nephrin and the autophagy marker LC3. Flow cytometry was used for detecting podocyte apoptosis. RESULTS: IGF-1 expression was increased in HG-stimulated MPC-5 cells and the kidney of db/db diabetic mice compared with corresponding controls. Knocking down IGF-1 downregulated IGF-1R and inhibited JAK2/STAT signalling pathway in HG-treated MPC-5 cells and db/db diabetic mice. IGF-1 silencing attenuated HG-induced podocyte injury, apoptosis and reduction in autophagy. Activating the JAK2/STAT signalling pathway or inhibiting autophagy reversed the effects of IGF-1 silencing on HG-treated MPC-5 cells. CONCLUSION: Knocking down IGF-1 alleviates HG-induced podocyte injury and apoptosis by inactivating the JAK2/STAT signalling pathway and enhancing autophagy.

Gastrointestinal symptoms are a common postoperative complication in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD), affecting their postoperative recovery. Probiotic intervention may be a promising therapeutic approach to alleviate postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Lactobacillus plantarum 24-7 (L. plantarum 24-7) in mitigating postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms and promoting patient recovery. Adult CHD patients scheduled for surgical intervention were recruited. One hundred and twenty patients were randomized and received L. plantarum or placebo intervention twice daily for ten days. Gastrointestinal symptoms were assessed utilizing the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS). Various postoperative variables were analyzed across both groups. Alterations in gut microbiota were evaluated through 16S rRNA sequencing. 112 patients completed the study, with 55 in the probiotic group and 57 in the placebo group. While the disparity in overall postoperative GSRS scores between the two groups did not reach statistical significance (P = 0.067), marked differences were observed in bloating (P = 0.004) and hard stool (P = 0.030) scores. Furthermore, individuals within the probiotic group exhibited lower postoperative neutrophil counts (P = 0.007) and concurrently higher lymphocyte counts (P = 0.001). Variations in the diversity and composition of postoperative gut microbiota were discerned between the probiotic and placebo groups. Remarkably, no probiotic-related adverse events were documented. Supplementation with L. plantarum was well-tolerated and demonstrated partial efficacy in ameliorating gastrointestinal symptoms in postoperative CHD patients. Modulating the gut microbiota may be a potential mechanism by which L. plantarum exerts clinical benefits.

BACKGROUND: Keloids are aggressive fibroproliferative disorders that cause aesthetic and functional damage. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has shown promise as a novel treatment for keloids. However, the limited penetration of 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) and unsatisfactory outcomes in dense scars hinder its effectiveness as a monotherapy. The objective of this study is to assess the efficacy and safety of fractional CO2 laser followed by 5-ALA PDT for keloids. METHODS: A total of 12 patients with keloid were included in our study. Each lesion was pretreated by fractional CO2 laser with 26-28 W to create microthermal zones. After topical application of 5-ALA solution, an irradiation of 635 nm red light with 120 J/cm2 was performed. The treatment was repeated at least every 2 weeks. Efficacy and safety were evaluated using the Vancouver Scar Scale (VSS), the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for keloid-related symptoms and documentation of postoperative complications. Statistical analysis was performed to compare VSS and keloid-related symptom VAS scores of the baseline and final treatment sessions. RESULTS: The final treatment resulted in a statistically significant decrease in all parameters of VSS and VAS for pruritus and pain compared to the baseline. Except for postoperative hyperpigmentation, no infections, scar aggravation, or recurrence were observed during at least 6 months of follow-up. Overall, patients expressed a high level of satisfaction with the treatment outcome. CONCLUSIONS: Fractional CO2 laser followed by 5-ALA PDT is a promising method for treating keloids. However, its synergetic effects need to be validated through clinical trials involving larger patient cohorts.

BACKGROUND: The management and nursing care of women's temperature during delivery is an important part of clinical obstetrics. We aimed to evaluate maternal intrapartum fever during epidural labour analgesia to provide evidence for the management and care of women in labour. METHODS: This study was conducted and reported according to the STROBE statement. Women in labour undergoing epidural labour analgesia in our hospital from 1 January 2021 to 31 August 2022 were retrospectively selected. The characteristics of women in labour with and without intrapartum fever were compared. Pearson correlation and logistic regression analysis were used to analyse the influencing factors of postpartum fever. RESULTS: A total of 196 women in labour were included, the incidence of maternal intrapartum fever in women in labour undergoing epidural analgesia was 27.5%. Pearson correlation analyses showed that BMI, oxytocin use, labour duration, number of vaginal examinations, time from rupture of the foetal membranes to the end of labour and duration of epidural analgesia were all correlated with the occurrence of intrapartum fever (all P < 0.05). Logistic regression analyses indicated that body mass index ≥28 kg/m2 (OR = 1.825), oxytocin use (OR = 2.082), labour duration ≥9.2 h (OR = 2.613), number of vaginal examinations ≥8 (OR = 2.044-3.115), the time from rupture of the foetal membranes to the end of labour ≥250 min (OR = 2.766) and duration of epidural analgesia ≥300 min (OR = 3.106) were risk factors for intrapartum fever in women in labour undergoing epidural analgesia (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Maternal intrapartum fever in women in labour undergoing epidural analgesia is common and influenced by many factors. Nurses should take early preventive care measures according to these factors during epidural analgesia in labour.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures are composed of atomically thin layers assembled through weak (vdW) force, which have opened a new era for integrating materials with distinct properties and specific applications. However, few studies have focused on whether and how anisotropic materials affect heterostructure system. The study introduces anisotropic and isotropic materials in a heterojunction system to change the in-plane symmetry, offering a new degree of freedom for modulating its properties. The sample is fabricated by manually stacking ReS2 and WS2 flakes prepared by mechanical exfoliation. Raman spectra and photoluminescence measurements confirm the formation of an effective heterojunction, indicating interlayer coupling of the system. The anisotropy and asymmetry of the WS2 -ReS2 heterostructure system can be adjusted by the introduction of isotropic WS2 and anisotropic ReS2 , which can be proved by the change of the polarized Raman pattern. In the transient absorption measurement, the transient absorption spectra of WS2 -ReS2 heterostructure are red-shifted compared to those of WS2 monolayer, and the charge transfer is observed in the heterostructure. These results show the potential of anisotropic 2D materials in anisotropy modulation of heterostructures, which may promote future electronic or photonic application.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is one of the major complications of sepsis. Aurantio-obtusin (AO) is an anthraquinone compound with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. This study was developed to concentrate on the role and mechanism of AO in sepsis-induced AKI. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated human renal proximal tubular epithelial cells (HK-2) and BALB/c mice receiving cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) surgery were used to establish in vitro cell model and in vivo mouse model. HK-2 cell viability was measured using MTT assays. Histological alterations of mouse renal tissues were analyzed via hematoxylin and eosin staining. Renal function of mice was assessed by measuring the levels of serum creatinine (SCr) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). The concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines in HK-2 cells and serum samples of mice were detected using corresponding ELISA kits. Protein levels of factors associated with nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) pathway were measured in HK-2 cells and renal tissues by Western blotting. AO exerted no cytotoxic effect on HK-2 cells and AO dose-dependently rescued LPS-induced decrease in HK-2 cell viability. The concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines were increased in response to LPS or CLP treatment, and the alterations were reversed by AO treatment. For in vivo experiments, AO markedly ameliorated renal injury and reduced high levels of SCr and BUN in mice underwent CLP operation. In addition, AO administration inhibited the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, AO alleviates septic AKI by suppressing inflammatory responses through inhibiting the NF-κB pathway.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2 ) has gained significant attention as a promising catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The catalytic performance of MoS2 can be enhanced by either altering its structure or regulating external conditions. In this study, a novel approach combining the introduction of sulfur vacancy (VS ) and biaxial tensile strain to create more active sites and modulate the band structure of monolayer MoS2 is proposed. To achieve the desired strain level, nano-cones (NCs) array substrates facilely fabricated by dip-pen nanolithography (DPN) are employed. The magnitude of the applied tensile strain can be finely tuned via adjusting the height of the NCs. Furthermore, on-chip electrochemical devices are constructed based on artificial structures, enabling precise optimization of HER performance of MoS2 through the synergistic effect of VS and strain. Combined with the d-band theory, it reveals that the HER properties of VS -MoS2 are highly dependent on the degree of tensile strain. This study presents a promising avenue for the design and preparation of high-performance 2D catalysts for energy conversion and storage applications.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), with superior mechanical and electrical conductivity, are one of the most promising two-dimensional materials for creating a generation of intelligent and flexible electronic devices. However, due to the high van der Waals and electrostatic attraction, TMD nanomaterials tend to aggregate in dispersants to achieve a stable state, thus severely limiting their further applications. Surface chemical modification is a common strategy for improving the dispersity of TMD nanomaterials; however, there are still constraints such as limited functionalization methods, low grafting rate, and difficult practice application. Thus, it is challenging to develop innovative surface modification systems. Herein, we covalently modify an olefin molecule on surface-inert MoS2, and the modified MoS2 can be used as not only a catalyst for hydrogel polymerization, but also a cross-linker in the hydrogel network. Specifically, allyl is covalently grafted onto chemically exfoliated MoS2, and this modified MoS2 can be uniformly dispersed in polar solvents (such as acetone, N,N-dimethylformamide, and ethanol), remaining stable for more than 2 weeks. The allyl-modified MoS2 can catalyze the polymerization of polyacrylamide hydrogel and then integrate in the network, which increases the tensile strength of the composite hydrogel. The flexible sensor based on the composite hydrogel exhibits an ideal operating range of 600% and a quick response time of 150 ms. At the same time, the flexible device can also track the massive axial stretching movements of human joints, making it a reliable option for the next wave of wearable sensing technology.

Background: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a severe complication after cardiac surgery and is associated with an increased risk of ischemic stroke and mortality. The main aim of this study was to identify the independent predictors associated with POAF after isolated valve operation and to develop a risk prediction model. Methods: This retrospective observational study involved patients without previous AF who underwent isolated valve surgery from November 2018 to October 2021. Patients were stratified into two groups according to the development of new-onset POAF. Baseline characteristics and perioperative data were collected from the two groups of patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were applied to identify independent risk factors for the occurrence of POAF, and the results of the multivariate analysis were used to create a predictive nomogram. Results: A total of 422 patients were included in the study, of which 163 (38.6%) developed POAF. The Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that cardiac function (odds ratio [OR] = 2.881, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.595-5.206; P < 0.001), Left atrial diameter index (OR = 1.071, 95%CI = 1.028-1.117; P = 0.001), Operative time (OR = 1.532, 95%CI = 1.095-2.141; P = 0.013), Neutrophil count (OR = 1.042, 95%CI = 1.006-1.08; P = 0.021) and the magnitude of fever (OR = 3.414, 95%CI = 2.454-4.751; P < 0.001) were independent predictors of POAF. The above Variables were incorporated, and a nomogram was successfully constructed with a C-index of 0.810. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.817. Conclusion: Cardiac function, left atrial diameter index, operative time, neutrophil count, and fever were independent predictors of POAF in patients with isolated valve surgery. Establishing a nomogram model based on the above predictors helps predict the risk of POAF and may have potential clinical utility in preventive interventions.

BACKGROUND: Warfarin is the most recommended oral anticoagulant after artificial mechanical valve replacement therapy. However, the narrow therapeutic window and varying safety and efficacy in individuals make dose determination difficult. It may cause adverse events such as hemorrhage or thromboembolism. Therefore, advanced algorithms are urgently required for the use of warfarin. OBJECTIVE: To establish a warfarin dose model for patients after prosthetic mechanical valve replacement in southern China in combination with clinical and genetic variables, and to improve the accuracy and ideal prediction percentage of the model. METHODS: Clinical data of 476 patients were tracked and recorded in detail. The gene polymorphisms of VKORC1 (rs9923231, rs9934438, rs7196161, and rs7294), CYP2C9 (rs1057910), CYP1A2 (rs2069514), GGCX (rs699664), and UGT1A1 (rs887829) were determined using Sanger sequencing. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyze the gene polymorphisms and the contribution of clinical data variables; the variables that caused multicollinearity were screened stepwise and excluded to establish an algorithm model for predicting the daily maintenance dose of warfarin. The ideal predicted percentage was used to test clinical effectiveness. RESULTS: A total of 395 patients were included. Univariate linear regression analysis suggested that CYP1A2 (rs2069514) and UGT1A1 (rs887829) were not associated with the daily maintenance dose of warfarin. The new algorithm model established based on multiple linear regression was as follows: Y = 1.081 - 0.011 (age) + 1.532 (body surface area)-0.807 (rs9923231 AA) + 1.788 (rs9923231 GG) + 0.530 (rs1057910 AA)-1.061 (rs1057910 AG)-0.321 (rs699664 AA). The model accounted for 61.7% of individualized medication differences, with an ideal prediction percentage of 69%. CONCLUSION: GGCX (rs699664) may be a potential predictor of warfarin dose, and our newly established model is expected to guide the individualized use of warfarin in clinical practice in southern China.

Point defects of heteroatoms and vacancies can activate the inert basal plane of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2 ) to improve its performance on catalyzing the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the synergy between heteroatoms and vacancies is still unclear. Here, a chemical vapor deposition-assisted in situ vanadium (V) doping method is used to synthesize monolayer MoS2 with abundant and tunable vacancies and V-dopants in the lattice. Ten delicate defect configurations are prepared to provide a complex system for the relationship investigation between microstructure and catalytic performance. The combination of on-chip electrochemical tests and theoretical calculations indicates that the HER performance greatly depends on the type and amount of defect configurations. The optimal configuration is that three V atoms are aggregated and accompanied by abundant sulfur vacancies, in which, H atoms directly interact with Mo and V atoms to form the most stable metal-bridge structure. The on-chip measurements also confirm that the sample with high concentrations of this type of defect configuration exhibits the best catalytic performance, indicating the efficient synergy in the optimal configuration. The revealed effects of defect configurations are expected to inspire the design and regulation of high-efficiency 2D catalysts.

Defect engineering is an effective strategy to improve the activity of two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide base planes toward electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. Here, we report a Frenkel-defected monolayer MoS2 catalyst, in which a fraction of Mo atoms in MoS2 spontaneously leave their places in the lattice, creating vacancies and becoming interstitials by lodging in nearby locations. Unique charge distributions are introduced in the MoS2 surface planes, and those interstitial Mo atoms are more conducive to H adsorption, thus greatly promoting the HER activity of monolayer MoS2 base planes. At the current density of 10 mA cm-2, the optimal Frenkel-defected monolayer MoS2 exhibits a lower overpotential (164 mV) than either pristine monolayer MoS2 surface plane (358 mV) or Pt-single-atom doped MoS2 (211 mV). This work provides insights into the structure-property relationship of point-defected MoS2 and highlights the advantages of Frenkel defects in tuning the catalytic performance of MoS2 materials.

It has been reported that hypoxia­inducible factor 1α (HIF­1α) serves a key role in the protective effect of remote ischemic preconditioning (RIP) in ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)­induced cardiac injury. Moreover, inhibition of prolyl 4­hydroxylase (PHD), an enzyme responsible for HIF­1α degradation, prevents I/R­induced cardiac injury. However, whether their protective effects are synergetic remains to be elucidated. The present study aimed to investigate the protective effect of RIP, PHD inhibition using dimethyloxalylglycine (DMOG) and their combination on I/R­induced cardiac injury. Rabbits were randomly divided into seven groups: i) Sham; ii) I/R; iii) lung RIP + I/R; iv) thigh RIP + I/R; v) DMOG + I/R; vi) DMOG + lung RIP + I/R; and vii) DMOG + thigh RIP + I/R. I/R models were established via 30 min left coronary artery occlusion and 3 h reperfusion. For lung/thigh RIP, rabbits received left pulmonary artery (or left limb) ischemia for 25 min and followed by release for 5 min. Some rabbits were administered 20 mg/kg DMOG. The results demonstrated that both lung/thigh RIP and DMOG significantly decreased myocardial infarct size, creatine kinase activity and myocardial apoptosis in I/R rabbits. Furthermore, the combination of RIP and PHD inhibition exerted synergetic protective effects on these aforementioned changes. The mechanistic study indicated that both treatments increased mRNA and protein expression levels of HIF­1α and its downstream regulators, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), AKT and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that RIP and PHD inhibition exerted synergetic protective effects on cardiac injury via activation of HIF­1α and the downstream VEGF/AKT­eNOS signaling pathway.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how a person's view of life and death might influence various aspects of well-being. Similar studies have been conducted with adolescents in different cultures, but not with Chinese Tujia ethnic adolescents. Tujia adolescents (N = 309) completed the Meaning in Life Questionnaire (MLQ), the Death Attitude Profile (DAP), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) and the Happiness Inventory (HI). Results indicated that Chinese Tujia ethnic adolescents maintain a relatively positive life-and-death view and overall well-being. Meaning in life and death attitude both corresponded with overall well-being. A dominance analysis indicated that meaning in life can predict the well-being of a person better than a death attitude. Limitations and future directions are discussed.

This study proposes a novel respiratory signal detection system for 4D-CT in radiotherapy by measuring back pressure changes at multiple positions on CT couch. The 12-channel pressure sensor is fixed on CT couch to obtain patient's back pressure signal. The 12-channel signal is transmitted to a PC at a sampling rate of 50 Hz after a signal conditioning circuit and an analog-digital converter. The amplitude of pressure changes is characterized to select the optimal channel. This system is validated by comparing with the respiratory signal collected synchronously with a real-time position management (RPM) system on 10 healthy volunteers. The correlation coefficient between the signals is 0.82 ± 0.09 (standard deviation) and the time shift is 0.32 ± 0.15 second. We conclude that the back pressure signal acquired by the proposed system has the potential to replace the clinical RPM system for respiratory signal detection in 4D-CT data acquisition.

RESUMEN

Regular treatment of DKA patients is not feasible in cases associated with Uremia because of being urineless and prone to heart failure of these patients. Our results indicated that continuous renal replacement therapy is a better alternative.
