RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we used ultra-wide field swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (UWF SS-OCTA) to assess changes in retinal thickness (RT) and choroidal parameters in individuals who had received a diagnosis of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). METHODS: The study encompassed the evaluation of 59 eyes from 47 patients with a diagnosis of CSC, alongside 33 fellow eyes and 31 eyes from healthy individuals (controls). The parameters assessed included RT, choroidal thickness (CT), choriocapillaris density, vascular density of the large choroidal vessel layer, three-dimensional choroidal vascularity index (3D-CVI), choroidal vessel volume per unit area (mCVV/a), and choroidal stroma volume per unit area (mCSV/a). RESULTS: Metrics including mCVV/a, mCSV/a, 3D-CVI, CT, and RT exhibited significantly elevated values in the eyes affected by CSC compared to those of the control group across nine subfields. Moreover, a substantial number of the subfields in both CSC-affected and fellow eyes exhibited increased values for mCVV/a, mCSV/a, 3D-CVI, CT, and RT when compared with the control group. Additionally, acute and chronic CSC subfields demonstrated significantly elevated values for mCVV/a, mCSV/a, 3D-CVI, CT, and RT in comparison to healthy control eyes. Notably, specific subfields associated with complex and atypical forms of CSC revealed higher metrics compared to those of the control group. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, the UWF SS-OCTA proved to be a valuable tool for exploring the anatomical etiology and clinical classification and diagnosis of CSC.

RESUMEN

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is a severe disease that affects the yield and quality of wheat. Popularization of resistant cultivars in production is the preferred strategy to control this disease. In the present study, the Chinese wheat breeding line Jimai 809 showed excellent agronomic performance and high resistance to powdery mildew at the whole growth stage. To dissect the genetic basis for this resistance, Jimai 809 was crossed with the susceptible wheat cultivar Junda 159 to produce segregation populations. Genetic analysis showed that a single dominant gene, temporarily designated PmJM809, conferred the resistance to different Bgt isolates. PmJM809 was then mapped on the chromosome arm 2BL and flanked by the markers CISSR02g-1 and CIT02g-13 with genetic distances 0.4 and 0.8 cM, respectively, corresponding to a physical interval of 704.12-708.24 Mb. PmJM809 differed from the reported Pm genes on chromosome arm 2BL in origin, resistance spectrum, physical position and/or genetic diversity of the mapping interval, also suggesting PmJM809 was located on a complex interval with multiple resistance genes. To analyze and screen the candidate gene(s) of PmJM809, six genes related to disease resistance in the candidate interval were evaluated their expression patterns using an additional set of wheat samples and time-course analysis post-inoculation of the Bgt isolate E09. As a result, four genes were speculated as the key candidate or regulatory genes. Considering its comprehensive agronomic traits and resistance findings, PmJM809 was expected to be a valuable gene resource in wheat disease resistance breeding. To efficiently transfer PmJM809 into different genetic backgrounds, 13 of 19 closely linked markers were confirmed to be suitable for marker-assisted selection. Using these markers, a series of wheat breeding lines with harmonious disease resistance and agronomic performance were selected from the crosses of Jimai 809 and several susceptible cultivars. RESUMEN

We can visually discriminate and recognize a wide range of materials. Meanwhile, we use language to express our subjective understanding of visual input and communicate relevant information about the materials. Here, we investigate the relationship between visual judgment and language expression in material perception to understand how visual features relate to semantic representations. We use deep generative networks to construct an expandable image space to systematically create materials of well-defined and ambiguous categories. From such a space, we sampled diverse stimuli and compared the representations of materials from two behavioral tasks: visual material similarity judgments and free-form verbal descriptions. Our findings reveal a moderate but significant correlation between vision and language on a categorical level. However, analyzing the representations with an unsupervised alignment method, we discover structural differences that arise at the image-to-image level, especially among materials morphed between known categories. Moreover, visual judgments exhibit more individual differences compared to verbal descriptions. Our results show that while verbal descriptions capture material qualities on the coarse level, they may not fully convey the visual features that characterize the material's optical properties. Analyzing the image representation of materials obtained from various pre-trained data-rich deep neural networks, we find that human visual judgments' similarity structures align more closely with those of the text-guided visual-semantic model than purely vision-based models. Our findings suggest that while semantic representations facilitate material categorization, non-semantic visual features also play a significant role in discriminating materials at a finer level. This work illustrates the need to consider the vision-language relationship in building a comprehensive model for material perception. Moreover, we propose a novel framework for quantitatively evaluating the alignment and misalignment between representations from different modalities, leveraging information from human behaviors and computational models.

RESUMEN

Powdery mildew is one of the most severe diseases affecting wheat yield and quality and is caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt). Host resistance is the preferred strategy to prevent this disease. However, the narrow genetic basis of common wheat has increased the demand for diversified germplasm resources against powdery mildew. Wheat relatives, especially the secondary gene pool of common wheat, are important gene donors in the genetic improvement of common wheat because of its abundant genetic variation and close kinship with wheat. In this study, a series of 137 wheat relatives, including 53 Triticum monococcum L. (2n = 2x = 14, AA), 6 T. urartu Thumanjan ex Gandilyan (2n = 2x = 14, AA), 9 T. timopheevii Zhuk. (2n = 4x = 28, AAGG), 66 T. aestivum subsp. spelta (2n = 6x = 42, AABBDD), and 3 Aegilops speltoides (2n = 2x = 14, SS) were systematically evaluated for their powdery mildew resistance and composition of Pm genes. Out of 137 (60.58%) accessions, 83 were resistant to Bgt isolate E09 at the seedling stage, and 116 of 137 (84.67%) wheat relatives were resistant to the mixture of Bgt isolates at the adult stage. This indicates that these accessions show a high level of resistance to powdery mildew. Some 31 markers for 23 known Pm genes were used to test these 137 accessions, and, in the results, only Pm2, Pm4, Pm6, Pm58, and Pm68 were detected. Among them, three Pm4 alleles (Pm4a, Pm4b, and Pm4f) were identified in 4 T. subsp. spelta accessions. q-RT PCR further confirmed that Pm4 alleles played a role in disease resistance in these four accessions. The phylogenetic tree showed that the kinship of Pm4 was close to Pm24 and Sr62. This study not only provides reference information and valuable germplasm resources for breeding new wheat varieties with disease resistance but also lays a foundation for enriching the genetic basis of wheat resistance to powdery mildew.

RESUMEN

A new species of xenodermid snake, Achalinusnanshanensis H. Li, L.-Q. Zhu, Z.-Q. Zhang & X.-Y. Mo, sp. nov., is described based on three specimens collected from Nanshan National Park and Tongdao County of southwest Hunan Province. This new species is genetically distinct amongst its congeners with the mitochondrial COI uncorrected p-distance ranging from 4.4% (in A.yangdatongi) to 17.7% (in A.meiguensis). In addition, this new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the following morphological characters: (1) dorsal scales with 23 or 25 rows throughout and strongly keeled; (2) tail relatively longer so that TaL/ToL = 0.215-0.248; (3) length of suture between internasals significantly longer than that between prefrontals, LSBI/LSBP = 1.66-1.84; (4) single loreal scale present; (5) SPL 6 in number, with the fourth and fifth contacting eye; (6) IFL 6 in number, with the first three touching the first pair of chin shields; (7) TMP is 2-2-4/2-2(3)-4, with the anterior pair elongated and in contact with the eye; (8) ventrals 2 + 147-158; (9) subcaudals 64-77, unpaired; (10) dorsal body brownish black, with a bright yellow neck collar extending to the head and abdomen in the occipital region. The recognition of the new species increases the number of described Achalinus species to 28, of which 21 are found in China.

RESUMEN

Powdery mildew, caused by Blumeria graminis f. sp. tritici (Bgt), is a serious threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production. Narrow genetic basis of common wheat boosted the demand for diversified donors against powdery mildew. Aegilops tauschii Coss (2n = 2x = DD) and emmer wheat (2n = 4x = AABB), as the ancestor species of common wheat, are important gene donors for genetic improvement of common wheat. In this study, a total of 71 Ae. tauschii and 161 emmer wheat accessions were first evaluated for their powdery mildew resistance using the Bgt isolate E09. Thirty-three Ae. tauschii (46.5%) and 108 emmer wheat accessions (67.1%) were resistant. Then, all these accessions were tested by the diagnostic markers for 21 known Pm genes. The results showed that Pm2 alleles were detected in all the 71 Ae. tauschii and only Pm4 alleles were detected in 20 of 161 emmer wheat accessions. After haplotype analysis, we identified four Pm4 alleles (Pm4a, Pm4b, Pm4d, and Pm4f) in the emmer wheat accessions and three Pm2 alleles (Pm2d, Pm2e, and Pm2g) in the Ae. tauschii. Further resistance spectrum analysis indicated that these resistance accessions displayed different resistance reactions to different Bgt isolates, implying they may have other Pm genes apart from Pm2 and/or Pm4 alleles. Notably, a new Pm2 allele, Pm2S, was identified in Ae. tauschii, which contained a 64-bp deletion in the first exon and formed a new termination site at the 513th triplet of the shifted reading frame compared with reported Pm2 alleles. The phylogenetic tree of Pm2S showed that the kinship of Pm2S was close to Pm2h. To efficiently and accurately detect Pm2S and distinguish with other Pm2 alleles in Ae. tauschii background, a diagnostic marker, YTU-QS-3, was developed, and its effectiveness was verified. This study provided valuable Pm alleles and enriched the genetic diversity of the powdery mildew resistance in wheat improvement.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Food systems instantiate the complex interdependencies across humans, physical environments, and other organisms. Applying One Health approaches for agri-food system transformation, which adopts integrated and unifying approaches to optimize the overall health of humans, animals, plants, and environments, is crucial to enhance the sustainability of food systems. This study develops a potential assessment tool, named the global One Health index-Food Security (GOHI-FS), aiming to evaluate food security performance across countries/territories from One Health perspective and identify relevant gaps that need to be improved for sustainable food systems. METHODS: We comprehensively reviewed existing frameworks and elements of food security. The indicator framework of GOHI-FS was conceptualized following the structure-process-outcome model and confirmed by expert advisory. Publicly available data in 2020 was collected for each indicator. The weighting strategy was determined by the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process. The data for each indicator was normalized and aggregated by weighted arithmetic mean. Linear regressions were performed to evaluate the associations of GOHI-FS with health and social-economic indicators. RESULTS: The GOHI-FS includes 5 first-level indicators, 19 second-level indicators and 45 third-level indicators. There were 146 countries/territories enrolled for evaluation. The highest average score of first-level indicators was Nutrition (69.8) and the lowest was Government Support and Response (31.3). There was regional heterogeneity of GOHI-FS scores. Higher median scores with interquartile range (IQR) were shown in North America (median: 76.1, IQR: 75.5-76.7), followed by Europe and Central Asia (median: 66.9, IQR: 60.1-74.3), East Asia and the Pacific (median: 60.6, IQR: 55.5-68.7), Latin America and the Caribbean (median: 60.2, IQR: 57.8-65.0), Middle East and North Africa (median: 56.6, IQR: 52.0-62.8), South Asia (median: 51.1, IQR: 46.7-53.8), and sub-Saharan Africa (median: 41.4, IQR: 37.2-46.5). We also found significant associations between GOHI-FS and GDP per capita, socio-demographic index, health expenditure and life expectancy. CONCLUSIONS: GOHI-FS is a potential assessment tool to understand the gaps in food security across countries/territories under the One Health concept. The pilot findings suggest notable gaps for sub-Saharan Africa in numerous aspects. Broad actions are needed globally to promote government support and response for food security.

RESUMEN

Activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) contributes to energy dissipation and metabolic health. Although mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonists have been demonstrated to improve metabolism under obesity, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. We aimed to evaluate the role of BAT MR in metabolic regulation. After 8 weeks of high-fat diet (HFD) feeding, BAT MR KO (BMRKO) mice manifested significantly increased bodyweight, fat mass, serum fasting glucose, and impaired glucose homeostasis compared with littermate control (LC) mice, although insulin resistance and fasting serum insulin were not significantly changed. Metabolic cage experiments showed no change in O2 consumption, CO2 production, or energy expenditure in obese BMRKO mice. RNA sequencing analysis revealed downregulation of genes related to fatty acid metabolism in BAT of BMRKO-HFD mice compared with LC-HFD mice. Moreover, H&E and immunohistochemical staining demonstrated that BMRKO exacerbated HFD-induced macrophage infiltration and proinflammatory genes in epididymal white adipose tissue (eWAT). BMRKO-HFD mice also manifested significantly increased liver weights and hepatic lipid accumulation, an increasing trend of genes related to lipogenesis and lipid uptake, and significantly decreased genes related to lipolytic and fatty acid oxidation in the liver. Finally, the level of insulin-induced AKT phosphorylation was substantially blunted in eWAT but not liver or skeletal muscle of BMRKO-HFD mice compared with LC-HFD mice. These data suggest that BAT MR is required to maintain metabolic homeostasis, likely through its regulation of fatty acid metabolism in BAT and impacts on eWAT and liver.

RESUMEN

Angiogenesis is essential for the growth and metastasis of several malignant tumors including colorectal cancer (CRC). The molecular mechanism underlying CRC angiogenesis has not been fully elucidated. Emerging evidence indicates that secreted microRNAs (miRNAs) may mediate the intercellular communication between tumor cells and neighboring endothelial cells to regulate tumor angiogenesis. In addition, exosomes have been shown to carry and deliver miRNAs to regulate angiogenesis. miRNA N-72 is a novel miRNA that plays a regulatory role in the EGF-induced migration of human amnion mesenchymal stem cells. However, the relation between miRNA N-72 and cancer remains unclear. We here found that CRC cells could secrete miRNA N-72. A high miRNA N-72 level was detected in the serum of CRC patients and the cultured CRC cells. Moreover, the CRC cell-secreted miRNA N-72 could promote the migration, tubulogenesis, and permeability of endothelial cells. In addition, the mouse xenograft model was used to verify the facilitating effects of miRNA N-72 on CRC growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis in vivo. Further mechanism analysis revealed that CRC cell-secreted miRNA N-72 could be delivered into endothelial cells via exosomes, which then inhibited cell junctions of endothelial cells by targeting CLDN18 and consequently promoted angiogenesis. Our findings reveal a novel mechanism of CRC angiogenesis and highlight the potential of secreted miRNA N-72 as a therapeutic target and a biomarker for CRC.

RESUMEN

The occupational identity of local publicly funded students is associated with the stability of rural teachers. To discuss the influence mechanisms of family environment, psychological capital, and professional commitment on occupational identity, this study examined 395 local publicly funded students with the occupational identity scale, psychological capital scale, professional commitment scale compiled, and family environment scale in China. We found no significant difference in terms of sex, source of birth, only children or not, and from teachers' families or not. Junior students' occupational identity was significantly higher than that of freshmen. In addition, we found that psychological capital plays a total mediation role between family environment and occupational identity. Psychological capital explains the influence of family environment on occupational identity. While the moderating role of professional commitment on the family environment and psychological capital is not supported in this study, it positively moderates the mediation role of psychological capital and occupational identity. Overall, this study will be significant in improving the training quality of local publicly funded students.

RESUMEN

KEY MESSAGE: Host resistance conferred by Pm genes provides an effective strategy to control powdery mildew. The study of Pm genes helps modern breeding develop toward more intelligent and customized. Powdery mildew of wheat is one of the most destructive diseases seriously threatening the crop yield and quality worldwide. The genetic research on powdery mildew (Pm) resistance has entered a new era. Many Pm genes from wheat and its wild and domesticated relatives have been mined and cloned. Meanwhile, modern breeding strategies based on high-throughput sequencing and genome editing are emerging and developing toward more intelligent and customized. This review highlights mining and cloning of Pm genes, molecular mechanism studies on the resistance and avirulence genes, and prospects for genomic-assisted breeding for powdery mildew resistance in wheat.

RESUMEN

Objective: Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency increases the risk of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. The aim of this study is to evaluate the risk factors associated with hyperbilirubinemia in infants from the western part of Guangdong Province, and to assess the contribution of G6PD deficiency to neonatal jaundice. Methods: The term infants with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia in People's Hospital of Yangjiang from June 2018 to July 2022 were recruited for the retrospective analysis. All the infants underwent quantitative detection of the G6PD enzyme. The etiology was determined through laboratory tests and clinical manifestations. Results: Out of 1,119 term infants, 435 cases presented with jaundice. For the etiology analysis, infection was responsible for 16.09% (70/435), G6PD deficiency accounted for 9.66% (42/435), of which 3 were complicated with acute bilirubin encephalopathy), bleeding accounted for 8.05% (35/435), hemolytic diseases accounted for 3.45% (15/435), and breast milk jaundice accounted for 2.53% (11/435). One case (0.23%) was attributed to congenital hypothyroidism, multiple etiologies accounted for 22.3% (97/435), and 35.63% (155/435) were of unknown etiology. Of the jaundiced infants, 19.54% (85/435) had G6PD deficiency, while only 10.23% (70/684) of non-jaundiced infants had G6PD deficiency; this difference was found to be statistically significant (P < 0.001). Furthermore, the hemoglobin levels in the jaundiced infants with G6PD deficiency (146.85 ± 24.88 g/L) were lower than those without G6PD deficiency (156.30 ± 22.07 g/L) (P = 0.001). 65 jaundiced infants with G6PD deficiency underwent G6PD mutation testing, and six different genotypes were identified, including c.95A > G, c.392G > T, c.1024C > T, c.1311C > T, c.1376G > T, c.1388G > A, c.871G > A/c.1311C > T, c.392G > T/c.1388G > A, and c.1376G > T/c.1311C > T.65iciency. Conclusion: In newborns in Yangjiang, G6PD deficiency, infection, and neonatal hemolytic disease were identified as the main causes of hyperbilirubinemia and acute bilirubin encephalopathy. Specifically, Hemolytic factors in infants with G6PD deficiency may lead to reduced hemoglobin and increased bilirubin levels in jaundiced infants.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Low temperature is the most common method used to maintain the freshness of Phlebopus portentosus during long-distance transportation. However, there is no information regarding the nutritional changes that occur in P. portentosus preserved postharvest in low temperature. Methods: In this study, the changes in flavor quality and bioactive components in fruiting bodies stored at 4 °C for different storage periods were determined through LC/MS and GC/MS analyses. Sampling was performed at 0, 3, 5, 7, and 13 days storage. Results and Discussion: Based on the results, the metabolites present in caps and stipes were different at the same period and significantly different after 7 days of storage. A total of 583 and 500 different metabolites were detected in caps and stipes, respectively, and were mainly lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, organic oxygen compounds and others. Except for prenol lipids and nucleotides, the expression levels of most metabolites increased with longer storage time. In addition, geosmin was identified as the major contributor to earthy-musty odors, and the level of geosmin was increased when the storage time was short. Conclusion: The variations in these metabolites might cause changes in flavor quality and bioactive components in P. portentosus. Variations in these metabolites were thoroughly analyzed, and the results revealed how storage processes affect the postharvest quality of P. portentosus for the first time.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether MRI-based T stage (TMRI), [18F]FDG PET/CT-based N (NPET/CT), and M stage (MPET/CT) are superior in NPC patients' prognostic stratification based on long-term survival evidences, and whether TNM staging method involving TMRI + NPET/CT + MPET/CT could improve NPC patients' prognostic stratification. METHODS: From April 2007 to December 2013, 1013 consecutive untreated NPC patients with complete imaging data were enrolled. All patients' initial stages were repeated based on (1) the NCCN guideline recommended "TMRI + NMRI + MPET/CT" ("MMP") staging method; (2) the traditional "TMRI + NMRI + Mconventional work-up (CWU)" ("MMC") staging method; (3) the single-step "TPET/CT + NPET/CT + MPET/CT" ("PPP") staging method; or (4) the "TMRI + NPET/CT + MPET/CT" ("MPP") staging method recommended in present research. Survival curve, ROC curve, and net reclassification improvement (NRI) analysis were used to evaluate the prognosis predicting ability of different staging methods. RESULTS: [18F]FDG PET/CT performed worse on T stage (NRI = - 0.174, p < 0.001) but better on N (NRI = 0.135, p = 0.004) and M stage (NRI = 0.126, p = 0.001). The patients whose N stage upgraded by [18F]FDG PET/CT had worse survival (p = 0.011). The "TMRI + NPET/CT + MPET/CT" ("MPP") method performed better on survival prediction when compared with "MMP" (NRI = 0.079, p = 0.007), "MMC" (NRI = 0.190, p < 0.001), or "PPP" method (NRI = 0.107, p < 0.001). The "TMRI + NPET/CT + MPET/CT" ("MPP") method could reclassify patients' TNM stage to a more appropriate stage. The improvement is significant in patients with more than 2.5-years follow-up according to the time-dependent NRI values. CONCLUSIONS: The MRI is superior to [18F]FDG PET/CT in T stage, and [18F]FDG PET/CT is superior to CWU in N/M stage. The "TMRI + NPET/CT + MPET/CT" ("MPP") staging method could significantly improve NPC patients' long-term prognostic stratification. CLINICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: The present research provided long-term follow-up evidence for benefits of MRI and [18F]FDG PET/CT in TNM staging for nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and proposes a new imaging procedure for TNM staging incorporating MRI-based T stage and [18F]FDG PET/CT-based N and M stage, which significantly improves long-term prognostic stratification for patients with NPC. KEY POINTS: • The long-term follow-up evidence of a large-scale cohort was provided to evaluate the advantages of MRI, [18F]FDG PET/CT, and CWU in the TNM staging of nasopharyngeal carcinoma. • A new imaging procedure for TNM stage of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was proposed.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DN) is the most common complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the role of fibrinogen (FIB) in T2DM neuropathy and its preliminary mechanism. METHODS: Ten male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into a normal control group (NC group) and a T2DM neuropathy model group (DN group). The DN group was given a high-energy diet and streptozotocin, while the NC group was given a normal diet and a citric acid buffer. The expression levels of related proteins were analysed. RESULTS: Electrophysiology: Compared with the NC group, the conduction latency of the somatosensory-evoked potential and nerve conduction velocity was prolonged in the DN group, while the motor nerve action potential was decreased. As seen under a light microscope, the peripheral nerve fibres in the DN group were swollen, and the nerve fibres in the posterior funiculus of the spinal cord were loose or missing. Moreover, as seen under an electron microscope, the peripheral nerve demyelination of the DN group was severe, with microvascular blood coagulation, luminal stenosis, and collapse. Compared with the NC group, in the DN group, the expression of FIB was positively correlated with the expression of both ionised calcium-binding adaptor molecule-1 and glial fibrillary acidic protein. Compared with the NC group, in the DN group, the expression of platelet/endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 and B-cell lymphoma 2 was negatively correlated. CONCLUSION: The increased concentration of FIB may be the cause of neuropathy, and its mechanism may be related to its promotion of inflammatory response, blood coagulation, and vascular stenosis.

RESUMEN

It is still a great challenge to design and synthesize high-efficiency and low-cost single-atom catalysts (SACs) as promising bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, theoretical insights into Sn-N4 embedded carbon nanotubes, graphene quantum dots, and graphene nanosheets (denoted as Sn-N4-CNTs, Sn-N4-GQDs, and Sn-N4-Gra, respectively) for the ORR/OER are systematically provided. These results show that the protruding Sn atom creates a Sn-N4 pyramid and induces varied strain transfer between Sn-N4 and different carbon substrates prior to adsorption of O intermediates, resulting in the opposite response of the adsorption strengths of O intermediates to the substrate curvature of Sn-N4-CNTs and Sn-N4-GQDs. The torsional strain induced by OH* and OOH* on the Sn atom of Sn-N4-CNTs breaks the scaling relations between the adsorption strengths of O intermediates. Consequently, Sn-N4-CNTs with suitable curvature achieve outstanding ORR performance with very low overpotentials (0.28 V). Furthermore, the increase of curvature boosts the OER activity of Sn-N4-CNTs. For Sn-N4-GQDs, high curvature contributes to promoted OER activity but reduced ORR activity. The electronic interactions reveal the electron transfer from the s/p-bands of Sn to the half-filled ß states of the frontier orbitals of O intermediates.

RESUMEN

Background: Cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS-HIPEC) is the standard treatment for patients with peritoneal cancer (PC). Following CRS-HIPEC, patients may also face risks caused by whole body hyperthermia. This study analyzed the incidence of temperature increases following CRS-HIPEC and identified the attendant risk factors. Methods: A retrospective analysis was carried out among 458 patients who received CRS-HIPEC at the Fourth Hospital of Hebei Medical University between August 2018 and January 2021. The patients were divided into two groups according to post-HIPEC axillary temperature (≥38°C), with the demographics and the laboratory test results subsequently analyzed and compared, and the risk factors pertaining to temperature increases analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Results: During CRS-HIPEC, 32.5% (149/458) of the patients with a temperature increase had an axillary temperature of not lower than 38°C, and 8.5% (39/458) of the patients with hyperpyrexia had an axillary temperature of not lower than 39°C. Female gender, gynecological malignancies, type of chemotherapy drug, increased postoperative neutrophil percentage, and a sharp drop in postoperative prealbumin were associated with the incidence of a temperature increase and axillary temperatures of >38°C. Among these factors, the type of chemotherapy drug was identified as an independent risk factor for a temperature increase during CRS-HIPEC. Conclusion: By determining the risk factors pertaining to temperature increases during CRS-HIPEC, medical staff can identify the attendant risks among the patients and thus take preventive measures in a timely manner to maintain the patient's body temperature at a stable level. This suggests that further clinical research should be conducted to build a risk-prediction model for temperature increases following CRS-HIPEC.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The disposable esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) system is a novel endoscopic device which is highly portable and is designed to eliminate the risk of cross-infection caused by reusable EGD. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and safety of disposable EGD in emergency, bedside, and intraoperative settings. METHODS: This was a prospective, single-center, noncomparative study. Disposable EGD was used for emergency, bedside, and intraoperative endoscopies in 30 patients. The primary end-point was the technical success rate of the disposable EGD. Secondary end-points included technical performance indicators including clinical operability, image quality score, procedure time, the incidence of device malfunction and/or failure, and the incidence of adverse events. RESULTS: A total of 30 patients underwent diagnosis and/or treatment with disposable EGD. Therapeutic EGD was performed on 13/30 patients, including hemostasis (n = 3), foreign body retrieval (n = 6), nasoenteric tube placement (n = 3), and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (n = 1). The technical success rate was 100%: all procedures and indicated interventions were completed without changing to a conventional upper endoscope. The mean image quality score obtained immediately after procedure completion was 3.72 ± 0.56. The mean (± SD) procedure time was 7.4 (± 7.6) min. There were no device malfunctions or failures, device-related adverse events, or overall adverse events. CONCLUSION: The disposable EGD may be a feasible alternative to the traditional EGD in emergency, bedside, and intraoperative settings. Preliminary data show that it is a safe and effective tool for diagnosis and treatment in emergency and bedside upper gastrointestinal cases. RESUMEN

On the basis of a novel two-stage pH combined with dissolved oxygen (DO) control strategy in fed-batch fermentation, this research addresses the influence of pH on cyclic ß-1,2-glucans (CßGs) biosynthesis and melanin accumulation during the production of CßGs by Rhizobium radiobacter ATCC 13,333. Under these optimal fermentation conditions, the maximum cell concentration and CßGs concentration in a 7-L stirred-tank fermenter were 7.94 g L-1 and 3.12 g L-1, which were the maximum production reported for R. radiobacter. The melanin concentration of the fermentation broth was maintained at a low level, which was beneficial to the subsequent separation and purification of the CßGs. In addition, a neutral extracellular oligosaccharide (COGs-1) purified by the two-stage pH combined with DO control strategy fermentation medium was structurally characterized. Structural analyses indicated that COGs-1 was a family of unbranched cyclic oligosaccharides composed of only ß-1,2-linked D-glucopyranose residues with degree of polymerization between 17 and 23, namely CßGs. This research provides a reliable source of CßGs and structural basis for further studies of biological activity and function. KEY POINTS: • A two-stage pH combined with DO control strategy was proposed for CßGs production and melanin biosynthesis by Rhizobium radiobacter. • The final extracellular CßGs production reached 3.12 g L-1, which was the highest achieved by Rhizobium radiobacter. • The existence of CßGs could be detected by TLC quickly and accurately.
