BACKGROUND: To assess the long-term impact of residential air pollution and green space exposure on cause-specific mortality in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS: This study includes 174,063 participants newly diagnosed with T2DM from a prospective cohort in Shanghai, China, enrolled between 2011 and 2013. Residential annual levels of air pollutants, including fine (PM2.5) and coarse (PM2.5-10) particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), along with the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), were derived from satellite-based exposure models. FINDINGS: During a median follow-up of 7.9 years (equivalent to 1,333,343 person-years), this study recorded 22,205 deaths. Higher exposure to PM2.5 was significantly associated with increased risks for all mortality outcomes, whilst PM2.5-10 showed no significant impacts. The strongest associations of PM2.5 were observed for diabetes with peripheral vascular diseases [hazard ratio (HR): 2.70; per 10 µg/m3 increase] and gastrointestinal cancer (2.44). Effects of NO2 became significant at concentrations exceeding approximately 45 µg/m³, with the highest associations for lung cancer (1.20) and gastrointestinal cancer (1.19). Conversely, each interquartile range increase in NDVI (0.10) was linked to reduced mortality risks across different causes, with HRs ranging from 0.76 to 1.00. The association between greenness and mortality was partly and significantly mediated by reduced PM2.5 (23.80%) and NO2 (26.60%). There was a significant and negative interaction between NO2 and greenness, but no interaction was found between PM2.5 and greenness. INTERPRETATION: Our findings highlight the vulnerability of individuals with T2DM to the adverse health effects of air pollution and emphasise the potential protective effects of greenness infrastructure. Horseshoe bats (genus Rhinolophus, family Rhinolophidae) represent an important group within chiropteran phylogeny due to their distinctive traits, including constant high-frequency echolocation, rapid karyotype evolution, and unique immune system. Advances in evolutionary biology, supported by high-quality reference genomes and comprehensive whole-genome data, have significantly enhanced our understanding of species origins, speciation mechanisms, adaptive evolutionary processes, and phenotypic diversity. However, genomic research and understanding of the evolutionary patterns of Rhinolophus are severely constrained by limited data, with only a single published genome of R. ferrumequinum currently available. In this study, we constructed a high-quality chromosome-level reference genome for the intermediate horseshoe bat ( R. affinis). Comparative genomic analyses revealed potential genetic characteristics associated with virus tolerance in Rhinolophidae. Notably, we observed expansions in several immune-related gene families and identified various genes functionally associated with the SARS-CoV-2 signaling pathway, DNA repair, and apoptosis, which displayed signs of rapid evolution. In addition, we observed an expansion of the major histocompatibility complex class II (MHC-II) region and a higher copy number of the HLA- DQB2 gene in horseshoe bats compared to other chiropteran species. Based on whole-genome resequencing and population genomic analyses, we identified multiple candidate loci (e.g., GLI3) associated with variations in echolocation call frequency across R. affinis subspecies. This research not only expands our understanding of the genetic characteristics of the Rhinolophus genus but also establishes a valuable foundation for future research.

BACKGROUND: Transgender women have a high prevalence of suicidal ideation, with stress and low interpersonal needs as its main risk factors. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of interpersonal needs on the relationship between perceived stress and suicidal ideation among transgender women in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Shenyang and Kunming from April to September 2018. 247 transgender women were recruited. Sociodemographic statistics, perceived stress, interpersonal needs and suicidal ideation were obtained. Correlation analysis and mediation analysis were performed to test the relationship among perceived stress, suicidal ideation and interpersonal needs. RESULTS: 14.6 % of the participants reported suicidal ideation within a year. Perceived stress was positively correlated with suicidal ideation (r = 0.228, p < 0.001), interpersonal needs and its three dimensions (r = 0.300-0.583, ps < 0.001)-thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness and social exclusion. Interpersonal needs and its three dimensions were also positively correlated with suicidal ideation (r = 0.148-0.299, ps < 0.05). Interpersonal needs, perceived burdensomeness and social exclusion partly mediated the relationship between perceived stress and suicidal ideation, while thwarted belongingness didn't play a mediating role. LIMITATIONS: Cross-sectional study limited confirmation of causality between variables. The investigation didn't aim at the specific stressors of sexual minorities. And that participants came from only two regions might affect the generalization of the results. CONCLUSIONS: We found a partial mediating role of interpersonal needs between stress and suicidal ideation. Stress reduction and increased social inclusion are needed to reduce suicidal ideation in transgender women.

RESUMEN

MXene, a promising two-dimensional nanomaterial, exhibits significant potential across various applications due to its multilayered structure, metal-like conductivity, solution processability, and surface functionalization capabilities. These remarkable properties facilitate the integration of MXenes and MXene-based materials into high-performance polymer composites. Regarding this, a comprehensive and well-structured up-to-date review is essential to provide an in-depth understanding of MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites. This review discusses various synthetic and modification methods of MXenes, current research progress and future potential on MXene/thermoplastic polyurethane nanocomposites, existing knowledge gaps, and further development. The main focus is on discussing strategies for modifying MXene-based compounds and their flame-retardant efficiency, with particular emphasis on understanding their mechanisms within the TPU matrix. Ultimately, this review addresses current challenges and suggests future directions for the practical utilization of these materials.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD), characterized by repeated alcohol consumption and withdrawal symptoms, poses a significant public health issue. Alcohol-induced impairment of the intestinal barrier results in alterations in intestinal permeability and the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Such alterations lead to a reduced relative abundance of intestinal lactic acid bacteria. However, the role of gut microbiota in alcohol consumption is not yet fully understood. In this study, we explore the mechanism by which gut microbiota regulates alcohol consumption, specifically using extracellular vesicles derived from Lactobacillus plantarum (L-EVs). L-EVs were administered to Sprague-Dawley rats either through intraperitoneal injection or microinjection into the ventral tegmental area (VTA), resulting in a significant reduction in alcohol consumption 72 hours after withdrawal. The observed reduction was akin to the effect of an intra-VTA microinjection of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF). Intriguingly, the microinjection of K252a (a Trk B antagonist) into the VTA blocked the reducing effect of L-EVs on alcohol consumption. The intraperitoneal injection of L-EVs restored the diminished BDNF expression in the VTA of alcohol-dependent rats. Furthermore, L-EVs rescued the low BDNF expression in alcohol-incubated PC12 cells. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that L-EVs attenuated alcohol consumption by enhancing BDNF expression in alcohol-dependent rats, thus suggesting the significant therapeutic potential of L-EVs in preventing excessive alcohol consumption.

Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH), a disease afflicting numerous individuals worldwide, is a primary cause of cognitive deficits, the pathogenesis of which remains poorly understood. Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibition (BTKi) is considered a promising strategy to regulate inflammatory responses within the brain, a crucial process that is assumed to drive ischemic demyelination progression. However, the potential role of BTKi in CCH has not been investigated so far. In the present study, we elucidated potential therapeutic roles of BTK in both in vitro hypoxia and in vivo ischemic demyelination model. We found that cerebral hypoperfusion induced white matter injury, cognitive impairments, microglial BTK activation, along with a series of microglia responses associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and ferroptosis. Tolebrutinib treatment suppressed both the activation of microglia and microglial BTK expression. Meanwhile, microglia-related inflammation and ferroptosis processes were attenuated evidently, contributing to lower levels of disease severity. Taken together, BTKi ameliorated white matter injury and cognitive impairments induced by CCH, possibly via skewing microglia polarization towards anti-inflammatory and homeostatic phenotypes, as well as decreasing microglial oxidative stress damage and ferroptosis, which exhibits promising therapeutic potential in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion-induced demyelination.

To address issues of global energy sustainability, it is essential to develop highly efficient bifunctional transition metal-based electrocatalysts to accelerate the kinetics of both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, the heterogeneous molybdenum and vanadium codoped cobalt carbonate nanosheets loaded on nickel foam (VMoCoCOx@NF) are fabricated by facile hydrothermal deposition. Firstly, the mole ratio of V/Mo/Co in the composite is optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). When the optimized composite serves as a bifunctional catalyst, the water-splitting current density achieves 10 mA cm-2 and 100 mA cm-2 at cell voltages of 1.54 V and 1.61 V in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte with robust stability. Furthermore, characterization is carried out using field emission scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (FESEM-EDS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the fabricated VMoCoCOx@NF catalyst synergistically decreases the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen and oxygen-containing intermediates, thus accelerating OER/HER catalytic kinetics. Benefiting from the concerted advantages of porous NF substrates and clustered VMoCoCOx nanosheets, the fabricated catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic performance. This work presents a novel approach to developing transition metal catalysts for overall water splitting.

RNA G4, as an integral branch of G4 structure, possesses distinct interactions with ligands compared to the common DNA G4, thus the investigation of RNA G4/ligand interactions might be considered as a fresh breakthrough to improve the biosensing performance of G4/ligand system. In this study, we comparatively explored the structural and functional mechanisms of RNA G4 and DNA G4 in the interaction with ligands, hemin and thioflavin T (ThT), utilizing the classical PS2.M sequence as a model. We found that although the catalytic performance of RNA G4/hemin system was lower than DNA G4/hemin, RNA G4/ThT fluorescence system exhibited a significant improvement (2∼3-fold) compared to DNA G4/ThT, and adenine modification could further enhance the signaling. Further, by exploring the interaction between RNA G4 and ThT, we deemed that RNA G4 and ThT were stacked in a bimolecular mode compared to single-molecule binding of DNA G4/ThT, thus more strongly limiting the structural spin in ThT excited state. Further, RNA G4/ThT displayed higher environmental tolerance and lower ion dependence than DNA G4/ThT. Finally, we employed RNA G4/ThT as a highly sensitive label-free fluorescent signal output system for in situ imaging of isoforms BCR-ABL e13a2 and e14a2. Overall, this study successfully screened a high-performance RNA G4 biosensing system through systematic RNA G4/ligands interaction studies, which was expected to provide a promising reference for subsequent G4/ligand research.

INTRODUCTION: Aplastic anemia (AA) and hypoplastic myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS-h) are bone marrow failure disease and difficult to distinguish merely by morphological analysis. In this study, we investigated the value of flow cytometry (FCM) in the differential diagnosis of AA and MDS-h. METHODS: We included 822 patients (626 control, 69 AA, 22 MDS-h and 105 dilution patients) from January 2017 to December 2022 for a retrospective study. Bone marrow myeloid progenitor (MP) cell and mature lymphocytes proportions were analyzed by FCM. The ratio of MP cell proportion and mature lymphocytes proportion, MPLR, was calculated. Data were compared by Kruskal-Wallis test. Differential diagnostic efficacy was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Cutoff value was determined by the maximum Youden index. RESULTS: Bone marrow MP cell proportion and MPLR of MDS-h patients were higher than AA patients. Mature lymphocytes proportion of MDS-h patients was lower than AA patients. Area under ROC curve (AUC of ROC) of MP cell proportion, MPLR and mature lymphocytes proportion to distinguish AA from MDS-h were 0.992, 0.988, and 0.850, respectively. Moreover, MPLR of dilution patients was higher than AA patients but lower than MDS-h patients. The AUC of ROC curves of MPLR to distinguish MDS-h and AA from dilution were 0.854 and 0.871, respectively. CONCLUSION: Bone marrow MP cell proportion and MPLR can effectively discriminate AA from MDS-h with similar differential efficacy, which is higher than mature lymphocytes proportion. Moreover, MPLR can evaluate the quality of bone marrow aspirates, which would interfere with the differential diagnosis.

This study aimed to determine the association between sleep quality and mental health in COVID-19 carriers in China and evaluate the moderating effects of perceived social support. 1283 asymptomatic COVID-19 carriers were enrolled from March 2022 to April 2022 among Ruijin Jiahe Fangcang shelter hospital in Shanghai, China. They were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), and the Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) respectively. Participants had an average age of 39.64 years and 59.6 % of whom were male. In total, 34.3 % of participants presented with poor sleep quality; 41.1 % showed bad mental health. Sleep quality was positively related to mental health (r = 0.321, P < 0.001, 95 %CI = 0.267, 0.369) and social support was negatively related to mental health (r = -0.414, P < 0.001, 95 %CI = -0.457, -0.367). Meanwhile, social support played a moderating role between sleep quality and mental health (ß = 0.066, P < 0.05, 95 %CI = 0.016, 0.117). These findings indicate that mental health resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic are increasingly apparent in China and provide a focus on sleep quality for the early prevention of mental health in asymptomatic carriers. And social support may be beneficial to the improvement of mental health, especially for people in crisis (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic).

Fiber side-pump couplers can enhance the output power of fiber laser due to their dependable and efficient operation and impressive power handling capability. We developed a tellurite fiber side-pump coupler by twisting and fusing a tapered pump fiber onto a target fiber. The effect of twisting parameters on coupling efficiency was comprehensively investigated through theoretical simulations and experiments. Experimental results exhibited an impressive coupling efficiency of 76.5% and a root mean square stability of 0.086% and 0.091% before and after one month, respectively, driven by an incident pump power of up to 4.2 W.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to understand how age, health status, and lifestyle impact bone mineral density (BMD) in middle-aged and older adults, focusing on predicting osteoporosis risk. METHODS: This study included 2836 participants aged 50-88 from the Health Improvement Program of Bone (HOPE) conducted from 2021 to 2023. We used logistic regression to make a prediction tool. Then checked its accuracy and reliability using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) and calibration curves. RESULTS: Factors like age, body weight, prior fractures, and smoking were independently found to affect BMD T-score distribution in men. In women, age and body weight were identified as independent factors influencing BMD T-score distribution. A nomogram was created to visually illustrate these predictive relationships. CONCLUSIONS: The nomogram proved highly accurate in identifying men aged 50 and above and postmenopausal women based on their BMD T-score distribution, improving clinical decision-making and patient care in osteoporosis evaluation and treatment.

Cow milk consumption (CMC) and downstream alterations of serum metabolites are commonly considered important factors regulating human health status. Foods may lead to metabolic changes directly or indirectly through remodelling gut microbiota (GM). We sought to identify the metabolic alterations in Chinese Peri-/Postmenopausal women with habitual CMC and explore if the GM mediates the CMC-metabolite associations. 346 Chinese Peri-/Postmenopausal women participants were recruited in this study. Fixed effects regression and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) were applied to reveal alterations of serum metabolic features in different CMC groups. Spearman correlation coefficient was computed to detect metabolome-metagenome association. 36 CMC-associated metabolites including palmitic acid (FA(16:0)), 7alpha-hydroxy-4-cholesterin-3-one (7alphaC4), citrulline were identified by both fixed effects regression (FDR < 0.05) and PLS-DA (VIP score > 2). Some significant metabolite-GM associations were observed, including FA(16:0) with gut species Bacteroides ovatus, Bacteroides sp.D2. These findings would further prompt our understanding of the effect of cow milk on human health.

BACKGROUND: HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) are at high risk of suicide and experience intersectional inequalities. The Social Determinants of Health (SDH) framework provides valuable insights into how inequalities can lead to adverse outcomes. This study aimed to employ the SDH framework to identify factors that contribute to suicidal behaviors among this population. METHODS: 1410 HIV-positive MSM were recruited using a web-based questionnaire, whose mean age was 30.77 ± 6.92 years old. Participants completed questionnaires including baseline information and psychological measurements, such as Suicidal Behaviors Questionnaire-Revised (SBQ-R). Logistic regression analysis was conducted to screen for risk factors associated with suicidal behaviors. RESULTS: More than half of the participants (53.3 %, 752/1410) had an SBQ score of 7 or higher. Binary logistic regression analysis of structural and intermediary determinants (Model 3) revealed that sexual orientation, stigma (ORs: 1.018, 95 % CI: 1.005-1.032), interpersonal needs (ORs: 1.021, 95 % CI: 1.010-1.031), depression (ORs: 1.037, 95 % CI: 1.001-1.074) and entrapment (ORs: 1.018, 95 % CI: 1.004-1.032) were positively correlated with suicidal behaviors. Individuals with other or unknown sexual orientation had significantly higher rates of suicidal behaviors compared to those with a heterosexual sexual orientation (ORs: 5.021, 95 % CI: 1.529-17.640). LIMITATIONS: Sampling of HIV-positive MSM posed challenges in data collection. It may introduce selection bias and affect generalizability. CONCLUSION: This study identified that sexual orientation, stigma, interpersonal needs, depression, and entrapment were significantly associated with suicidal behaviors among HIV-positive MSM. Additionally, these factors can be social determinants of health that contribute to suicidal behaviors.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the relationship between obesity and constipation among American adults. METHODS: Our study leveraged data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). This comprehensive approach enabled us to summarize the weighted prevalence rates of obesity in adults. To further deepen our understanding, we employed a variety of analytical methods. These included multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis and restricted cubic splines. Through these methodologies, we were able to effectively evaluate the correlation between various obesity indicators and constipation, offering new insights into this complex relationship. RESULTS: The weighted prevalence of constipation stands at 9.42%. Notably, an increased risk of constipation is linked with a BMI (body mass index) exceeding 28 kg/m2, WSR (waist-stature ratio) that is either between 58.3 and 64.8 or above 64.8, as well as a LAP (lipid accumulation products) ranging from 50.8 to 90.1. In contrast, a reduced risk of constipation is associated with WWI (weight-adjusted-waist index) that falls between 0.015 and 0.020, exceeds 0.020, and without the presence of central obesity (P < 0.05). Restricted cubic spline analysis, a significant non-linear relationship was discerned between BMI, WSR, and LAP in relation to constipation. CONCLUSIONS: This pioneering large-scale study explores the relationship between various obesity indices and constipation. It reveals that reducing the BMI, WSR, LAP and waist circumference can decrease the risk of constipation. Conversely, a higher value of WWI correlates with a lower constipation risk, and this remains true even after adjusting for a wide range of variables.

RESUMEN

The role of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in limited-stage small cell lung cancer (LS-SCLC) has been questioned in the era of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The purpose of this study was to re-evaluate the efficacy of PCI in patients with LS-SCLC. Three electronic databases were searched, including PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library from January 2012 to April 2022. All relevant publications were included based on the inclusion criteria, and survival data and brain metastasis (BM) rates were extracted and pooled. Ten studies were selected which involved 532 patients who received PCI and 613 patients who did not receive PCI. In pooled estimates, PCI significantly improved overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.71, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.61-0.82, p <0.001; HR = 0.68, 95% CI: 0.48-0.97, p = 0.03, respectively]. Additionally, the use of PCI was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of brain metastasis (BM, risk ratio = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.46-0.90, p = 0.009). In subgroup analyses. The authors found that the PCI effects on OS were independent of region and the use of brain imaging after initial treatment. These findings demonstrate that PCI improves OS and PFS while decreasing the risk of BM in patients with LS-SCLC, implying that PCI remains necessary even in the MRI era. ASH1L potentially contributes to Tourette syndrome (TS) and other neuropsychiatric disorders, as our previous studies have shown. It regulates essential developmental genes by counteracting polycomb-mediated transcriptional repression, which restricts chromatin accessibility at target genes. ASH1L is highly expressed in the adult brain, playing a crucial role in the early stage. However, it remains unclear how ASH1L mutations carried by patients with TS participate in regulating neuronal growth processes leading to TS traits. Five TS families recruited in our study underwent comprehensive physical examinations and questionnaires to record clinical phenotypes and environmental impact factors. We validated the variants via Sanger sequencing and constructed two mutants near the catalytic domain of ASH1L. We conducted molecular modeling, in vitro assays, and primary neuron cultures to find the role of ASH1L in neuronal development and its correlation with TS. In this study, we validated five pathogenic ASH1L rare variants and observed symptoms in patients with simple tics and behavioral comorbidities. Mutations near the catalytic domain of TS patients cause mental state abnormalities and disrupt ASH1L function by destabilizing its spatial conformation, leading to decreased activity of catalytic H3K4, thereby affecting the neurite growth. We need to conduct larger-scale studies on TS patients and perform additional neurological evaluations on mature neurons. We first reported the effects of ASH1L mutations in TS patients, including phenotypic heterogeneity, protein function, and neurological growth. This information contributes to understanding the neurodevelopmental pathogenesis of TS in patients with ASH1L mutations.

Graphene-like 2D nanomaterials, such as graphene, MXene, molybdenum disulfide, and boron nitride, present a promising avenue for eco-friendly flame retardants. Their inherent characteristics, including metal-like conductivity, high specific surface area, electron transport capacity, and solution processability, make them highly suitable for applications in both structural fire protection and fire alarm systems. This review offers an up-to-date exploration of advancements in flame retardant composites, utilizing pristine graphene-like nanosheets, versatile graphene-like nanosheets with multiple functions, and collaborative systems based on these nanomaterials. Moreover, graphene-like 2D nanomaterials exhibit considerable potential in the development of early fire alarm systems, enabling timely warnings. This review provides an overview of flame-retarding and fire-warning mechanisms, diverse multifunctional nanocomposites, and the evolving trends in the development of fire alarm systems anchored in graphene-like 2D nanomaterials and their derivatives. Ultimately, the existing challenges and prospective directions for the utilization of graphene-like 2D nanomaterials in flame retardant and fire-warning applications are put forward.

Background: Breast cancer represents a leading cause of malignancy among Chinese women, posing a significant health burden. The diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer, particularly to uncommon sites like the skin and stomach, presents distinct challenges. Case introduction: This case report describes a 71-year-old Chinese women with a persistent back rash lasting more than 6 months. Physical examination revealed red papules on her back. Immunohistochemistry confirmed positive for cytokeratin 7(CK7), GATA-3 and GCDFP15, as well as negative staining of cytokeratin 20 (CK20), suggesting breast cancer metastasis. Further evaluation revealed a breast nodule and axillary lymph node enlargement, with biopsies confirming invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). Abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed thickening of the gastric and ascending colon walls. Gastroscopy revealed chronic superficial atrophic gastritis. However, gastric metastasis was further confirmed by pathology. The patient initiated endocrine therapy with fulvestrant and exemestane, resulting in rash resolution and stable breast and stomach lesions after 3 months. Overall, the patient is experiencing an improvement in her condition and remains stable while continuing treatment. Conclusion: This case highlights the importance of considering atypical metastatic patterns in breast cancer and the potential efficacy of endocrine therapies in managing such cases. Moreover, it emphasizes the need for vigilance in breast cancer patients, especially those with ILC, as gastrointestinal symptoms may indicate gastric metastasis (GMs). Ultimately, early detection and appropriate treatment strategies, such as endocrine therapy, can contribute to improved outcomes in these challenging cases.

Bird sex chromosomes play a unique role in sex-determination, and affect the sexual morphology and behavior of bird species. Core waterbirds, a major clade of birds, share the common characteristics of being sexually monomorphic and having lower levels of inter-sexual conflict, yet their sex chromosome evolution remains poorly understood. Here, by we analyse of a chromosome-level assembly of a female crested ibis (Nipponia nippon), a typical core waterbird. We identify neo-sex chromosomes resulting from fusion of microchromosomes with ancient sex chromosomes. These fusion events likely occurred following the divergence of Threskiornithidae and Ardeidae. The neo-W chromosome of the crested ibis exhibits the characteristics of slow degradation, which is reflected in its retention of abundant gametologous genes. Neo-W chromosome genes display an apparent ovary-biased gene expression, which is largely driven by genes that are retained on the crested ibis W chromosome but lost in other bird species. These results provide new insights into the evolutionary history and expression patterns for the sex chromosomes of bird species.
