Heterozygous transmembrane protein 63A (TMEM63A) variants cause transient infantile hypomyelinating leukodystrophy-19, which features remarkable natural resolution of clinical and imaging findings during childhood. Previous reports have mainly described de novo variants lacking detailed familial cases. Herein, we describe the clinical course of familial cases with a TMEM63A variant. A 5-month-old girl presented with nystagmus, global hypotonia, and difficulty swallowing since birth. Brain magnetic resonance imaging at 1.5 and 5 months revealed diffuse hypomyelination. Her mother, maternal aunt, and grandfather had nystagmus and motor developmental delays in infancy, which resolved spontaneously during childhood. Compared with these cases, the proband's motor developmental delay was profound, and she was the only one with feeding difficulties, necessitating nasogastric tube feeding. Genetic testing revealed a heterozygous TMEM63A variant (NM_014698.3:c.1658G>A, p.(Gly553Asp)) in the proband and her family. This is the first three-generation familial report of a TMEM63A variant that provides insight into its history and heterogeneity.

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis (PCI) is a rare disease wherein air accumulates in the intestinal subserosa and submucosa, causing multiple gaseous cysts within the gastrointestinal wall. While PCI has various known risk factors, reports identifying muscular diseases as a factor are scarce. The aim of this study is to elucidate the clinical characteristics of PCI in muscle disease. We present a case series of five cases, including two cases of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and three cases of rare congenital myopathies. All cases are of male patients, with poor intestinal peristalsis and constipation, who underwent tube feeding and mechanical ventilation via tracheostomy. They had no signs of severe complications, such as intestinal necrosis, and all of them improved with conservative treatment. Case 1 is a 23-year-old man with DMD who developed cardiopulmonary arrest at the age of 20 years. Pulmonary hemorrhage occurred three months before the incidental detection of PCI in the ascending colon, which resolved with conservative oxygen treatment. Case 2 is a 25-year-old man with DMD who progressed to immobility necessitating tracheostomy at the age of 20 years. He experienced persistent abdominal pain and nausea, and PCI was detected in the cecum and ascending colon. He showed near-complete resolution of PCI after three months of conservative treatment. Case 3 is a six-year-old boy with reducing body myopathy. Constipation was diagnosed at four years of age. He experienced intermittent bloody stools, leading to the incidental detection of PCI at six years of age. After two months of conservative treatment, the PCI resolved with no subsequent recurrence. Case 4 is a 33-year-old man with infantile severe myotubular myopathy. He required mechanical ventilation immediately after birth and later underwent tracheostomy and tube feeding due to complications. At the age of 27 years, PCI was incidentally detected on abdominal CT. He had episodes of remission and worsening for a few years; however, PCI completely resolved after three years. Case 5 is a 27-year-old man with nemaline myopathy. At the age of 14 years, he had persistent bloody stools. After lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, he was diagnosed with PCI with numerous rectal cysts. PCI required no specific therapeutic intervention. There was spontaneous resolution of PCI and bloody stools. Given that PCI lacks specific symptoms and cases with muscular diseases often experience abdominal issues, many cases are liable to be overlooked or misdiagnosed. Cases with muscular diseases complaining of persistent abdominal symptoms should undergo radiographic imaging to rule out PCI.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of pediatric-onset dystonia in Japan, addressing the diagnostic challenges arising from symptom variations and etiological diversity. METHODS: From 2020 to 2022, questionnaires were distributed to 1218 board certified child neurologists (BCCNs) by Japanese Society of Child Neurology. In the primary survey, participants were asked to report the number of patients with pediatric-onset dystonia under their care. Subsequently, the follow-up secondary survey sought additional information on the clinical characteristics of these patients. RESULTS: The primary survey obtained 550 responses (response rate: 45 %) from BCCNs for their 736 patients with dystonia. The predominant etiologies included inherited cases (with DYT10   being the most prevalent, followed by DYT5 and ATP1A3-related neurologic disorders), acquired cases (with perinatal abnormalities being the most common), and idiopathic cases. The secondary survey provided clinical insights into 308 cases from 82 BCCNs. Infancy-onset dystonia presented as persistent and generalized with diverse symptoms, primarily linked to ATP1A3-related neurologic disorders and other genetic disorders resembling acquired dystonia. Conversely, childhood/adolescent-onset dystonia showed paroxysmal, fluctuating courses, predominantly affecting limbs. The most common etiologies were DYT5 and DYT10 , leading to therapeutic diagnoses. CONCLUSION: Pediatric-onset dystonia in Japan was treated by 28 % of BCCNs. The majority of cases were inherited, with high prevalence rates of DYT5 and DYT10 . Infancy-onset dystonia exhibits diverse etiologies and symptoms, emphasizing the utility of various examinations, including genetic testing. These findings significantly contribute to our understanding of pediatric-onset dystonia in Japan, although this study has the limitation of questionnaire survey.

Macrophages are versatile cells of the innate immune system that work by altering their pro- or anti-inflammatory features. Their dysregulation leads to inflammatory disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. We show that macrophage-specific upregulation of the clock output gene and transcription factor E4BP4 reduces the severity of colitis in mice. RNA-sequencing and single-cell analyses of macrophages revealed that increased expression of E4BP4 leads to an overall increase in expression of anti-inflammatory genes including Il4ra with a concomitant reduction in pro-inflammatory gene expression. In contrast, knockout of E4BP4 in macrophages leads to increased proinflammatory gene expression and decreased expression of anti-inflammatory genes. ChIP-seq and ATAC-seq analyses further identified Il4ra as a target of E4BP4, which drives anti-inflammatory polarization in macrophages. Together, these results reveal a critical role for E4BP4 in regulating macrophage inflammatory phenotypes and resolving inflammatory bowel diseases.

AIM: The present study aimed to determine whether decreased masticatory performance and tongue-lip motor function are associated with an increased incidence of adverse health events in patients with metabolic disease. METHODS: One thousand patients with metabolic diseases including diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperuricemia were recruited. Masticatory performance was assessed using a gummy jelly test, wherein glucose elution from chewed gummy jelly was measured. The tongue-lip motor function was measured using repeatedly pronounced syllables per second. Their association with the incidence of adverse health events (a composite of all-cause death, cardiovascular disease, bone fracture, malignant neoplasm, pneumonia, and dementia) was investigated using the generalized propensity score (GPS) method. RESULTS: During a median follow-up period of 36.6 (interquartile range, 35.0-37.7) months, adverse health events were observed in 191 patients. The GPS adjusted dose-response function demonstrated that masticatory performance was inversely associated with the incidence of adverse health events. The 3-year incidence rate was 22.8% (95% confidence interval, 19.0-26.4%) for the lower quartile versus 13.6% (10.5-16.7%) for the upper quartile (P<0.001). Similarly, the tongue-lip motor function was inversely associated with the incidence of adverse health events, with a 3-year incidence rate of 23.6% (20.0-27.0%) for the lower quartile versus 13.2% (10.4-15.9%) for the upper quartile (P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Decreased masticatory performance and tongue-lip motor function were associated with an increased incidence of adverse health events in patients with metabolic disease.

Mixed-stack complexes which comprise columns of alternating donors and acceptors are organic conductors with typically poor electrical conductivity because they are either in a neutral or highly ionic state. This indicates that conductive carriers are insufficient or are mainly localized. In this study, mixed-stack complexes that uniquely exist at the neutral-ionic boundary were synthesized by combining donors (bis(3,4-ethylenedichalcogenothiophene)) and acceptors (fluorinated tetracyanoquinodimethanes) with similar energy levels and orbital symmetry between the highest occupied molecular orbital of the donor and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the acceptor. Surprisingly, the orbitals were highly hybridized in the single-crystal complexes, enhancing the room-temperature conductivity (10-4-0.1 S cm-1) of mixed-stack complexes. Specifically, the maximum conductivity was the highest reported for single-crystal mixed-stack complexes under ambient pressures. The unique electronic structures at the neutral-ionic boundary exhibited structural perturbations between their electron-itinerant and localized states, causing abrupt temperature-dependent changes in their electrical, optical, dielectric, and magnetic properties.

Objective This prospective observational study explored the changes in the daily glycemic profile after switching from injectable to oral semaglutide in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who were treated with once-weekly 0.5 mg injectable semaglutide and wished to switch to once-daily oral semaglutide participated in this study. Oral semaglutide was initiated at 3 mg and increased to 7 mg a month later, according to the package insert. Before and two months after the switch, participants wore a sensor for continuous glucose monitoring for up to 14 days. We also evaluated the questionnaire-based treatment satisfaction and the preference between the two formulations. Patients Twenty-three patients participated. Results Mean glucose levels significantly increased by 9 mg/dL on average, from 132±20 to 141±27 mg/dL (p=0.047), which was equivalent to a change of 0.2% in the estimated hemoglobin A1c (6.5±0.5% to 6.7±0.7%). The inter-individual variability assessed with standard deviation also significantly increased (p=0.004). The change in treatment satisfaction varied considerably among patients, with no specific trend in the overall population. After trying oral semaglutide, 48% of patients responded that they preferred the oral formulation, while 35% preferred the injectable formulation, and 17% had no preference. Conclusion The mean glucose levels increased by 9 mg/dL on average after switching from once-weekly 0.5 mg injectable semaglutide to once-daily 7 mg oral semaglutide, with an increased inter-individual variability. The change in treatment satisfaction considerably varied among patients.

Introduction: We investigated the association between history of vaccination for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and symptoms at its diagnosis. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 2566 consecutive individuals suspected of having COVID-19 and visited a designated clinic between January and September 2022 (1733 were diagnosed with COVID-19, and 816 tested negative for COVID-19) in Japan. The individuals were divided by vaccination history for COVID-19. Results: In the COVID-19-free individuals, the vaccination was not significantly associated with any symptoms. Contrarily, those with COVID-19 demonstrated an inverse relationship between the vaccination and body temperature; the adjusted mean value was higher by 0.01°C, 0.04°C, 0.09°C, 0.27°C, and 0.34°C and 0.48°C in individuals vaccinated 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, and >10 months before and those unvaccinated, respectively, than in those vaccinated within 2 months (P = 0.96, 0.41, 0.081, 0.006, 0.004, and <0.001). Furthermore, among the affected population, individuals vaccinated long before or never vaccinated more frequently complained of fatigue and headache; the adjusted odds ratios of those vaccinated >10 months before and those unvaccinated compared with those vaccinated within 2 months were 2.53 and 2.45 for fatigue and 2.53 and 2.17 for headache (all P < 0.05). Contrarily, the prevalence of rhinorrhea, sore throat, and cough was higher in recently vaccinated individuals (adjusted odds ratios of those vaccinated within 2 months versus those unvaccinated, 2.40, 2.46, and 2.46; all P < 0.05). Conclusions: Symptoms at the COVID-19 diagnosis differed with the vaccination history. Information on vaccination history would be worth using when suspecting COVID-19 based on symptoms.

Aims/introduction: Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) is characterized predominantly by diastolic dysfunction. The multiple mechanisms underlying DCM include altered energy substrate utilization. Recent studies indicate that PPARα plays an important role in the pathogenesis of lipotoxic cardiomyopathy. Pemafibrate is known to be a selective PPARα modulator (SPPARMα). We thus investigated the effects of pemafibrate on cardiac diastolic function in patients with type 2 diabetes. Materials and methods: Seventeen patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and hypertriglyceridemia were screened and treated with pemafibrate at a dose of 0.2 mg/day for 8-16 weeks. Fourteen patients were eligible for analysis. Echocardiography was used for assessment of diastolic function. Early diastolic filling velocity (E), late atrial filling velocity (A) and the E/A ratio were included in this study. Peak early diastolic annular velocities (e') were also assessed using color tissue Doppler images. The primary endpoints were changes in the ratio of E to A (E/A), e', and the ratio of E to e' (E/e') from baseline. Results: Pemafibrate significantly increased average e' (7.24 ± 0.58 vs 7.94 ± 0.67, p = 0.019) and a significant reduction in E/e' (9.01 ± 0.94 vs 8.20 ± 0.91, p = 0.041). The increase in e' was significantly related to increases in fasting blood glucose (r = 0.607, p = 0.021) and non-esterified fatty acid (r = 0.592, p = 0.026). Conclusion: Pemafibrate improved diastolic function in patients with T2D and hypertriglyceridemia, suggesting that PPARα activation by pemafibrate prevents the development of DCM at an early stage.

Ferroelectric, pyroelectric, and piezoelectric compounds whose electric polarization properties can be controlled by external stimuli such as electric field, temperature, and pressure have various applications, including ferroelectric memory materials, sensors, and thermal energy-conversion devices. Numerous polarization switching compounds, particularly molecular ferroelectrics and pyroelectrics, have been developed. In these materials, the polarization switching usually proceeds via ion displacement and reorientation of polar molecules, which are responsible for the change in ionic polarization and orientational polarization, respectively. Recently, the development of electronic ferroelectrics, in which the mechanism of polarization change is charge ordering and electron transfer, has attracted great attention. In this article, representative examples of electronic ferroelectrics are summarized, including (TMTTF)2X (TMTTF = tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene, X = anion), α-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylenedithio)-tetrathiafulvalene), TTF-CA (TTF = tetrathiafulvalene, CA = p-chloranil), and [(n-C3H7)4N][FeIIIFeII(dto)3] (dto = 1,2-dithiooxalate = C2O2S2). Furthermore, polarization switching materials using directional electron transfer in nonferroelectrics, the so-called electronic pyroelectrics, such as [(Cr(SS-cth))(Co(RR-cth))(µ-dhbq)](PF6)3 (dhbq = deprotonated 2,5-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone, cth = 5,5,7,12,12,14-hexamethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraaza-cyclotetradecane), are introduced. Future prospects are also discussed, particularly the development of new properties in polarization switching through the manipulation of electronic polarization in electronic ferroelectrics and electronic pyroelectrics by taking advantage of the inherent properties of electrons.

Suppression-burst (SB) is an electroencephalographic pattern observed in neonatal- and infantile-onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs), which are associated with high mortality in early life. However, the relation of SB electroencephalogram (SB-EEG) with autonomic function requires clarification. We investigated the relationship between heart rate (HR) and phasic transition during SB-EEG in DEEs to explore the mechanism of early death. Seven patients (two with KCNT1-DEE) with neonatal- and infantile-onset DEE who presented with SB-EEG were retrospectively identified. Five-minute SB-EEGs were analyzed with simultaneous recording of electrocardiograms. Mean HR, suppression duration, and burst period were calculated by measuring RR intervals. Two patients with KCNT1-DEE exhibited synchronous HR fluctuations, with an HR decrease during suppression and an increase during burst. The HR decrease was larger (-6.1% and -7.7%) and the median duration of suppression was longer (4.0 and 8.2 s) in patients with KCNT1-DEE than the other five (range: -2.9% to 0.9% and 0.7-1.7s, respectively). A strong negative correlation was confirmed between suppression duration and HR reduction rates in one patient with KCNT1-DEE. SB phases may influence HR regulation in patients with KCTN1-DEE.

The crystallization of a complex having electron transfer properties in a polar space group can induce the polarization switching of a crystal in a specific direction, which is attractive for the development of sensors, memory devices, and capacitors. Unfortunately, the probability of crystallization in a polar space group is usually low. Noticing that enantiopure compounds crystallize in Sohncke space groups, this paper reports a strategy for the molecular design of non-ferroelectric polarization switching crystals based on the use of intramolecular electron transfer and chirality. In addition, this paper describes the synthesis of a mononuclear valence tautomeric (VT) cobalt complex bearing an enantiopure ligand. The introduction of enantiomer enables the crystallization of the complex in the polar space group (P21 ). The polarization of the crystals along the b-axis direction is not canceled out and the VT transition is accompanied by a change in the macroscopic polarization of the polar crystal. Polarization switching via electron transfer is realized at around room temperature.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic ablation surgeries including radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFTC) and laser interstitial thermal therapy are recent less invasive treatment methods for insular epilepsy. Volume-based RFTC after stereoelectroencephalography was first proposed by a French group as a more effective method for seizure relief in insular epilepsy patients than stereoelectroencephalography-guided RFTC. OBJECTIVE: To describe the feasibility and technical details about volume-based RFTC in patients with insulo-opercular epilepsy. METHODS: We successfully treated 3- and 6-year-old patients with medically refractory insulo-opercular epilepsy with volume-based RFTC, in which the target volume of coagulation was flexibly designed by combining multiple spherical models of 5-mm diameter which is smaller than reported previously. RESULTS: The insula was targeted by oblique trajectory from the frontoparietal area in one case, and the opercular cortex was targeted by perpendicular trajectories from the perisylvian cortex in the other case. The use of the small sphere model required more trajectories and manipulations but enabled more exhaustive coagulation of the epileptogenic zone, with 70% to 78% of the planned target volume coagulated without complications, and daily seizures disappeared after RFTC in both patients. CONCLUSION: Volume-based RFTC planned with small multiple sphere models may improve the completeness of lesioning for patients with insulo-opercular epilepsy. Careful planning is necessary to reduce the risks of vascular injuries.

BACKGROUND: The current study aimed to reveal the correlation of beta-cell function and insulin sensitivity with glycemic control and weight control before and after medical nutrition therapy (MNT) in patients with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive 68 patients with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus who started MNT without antihyperglycemic medications and underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) before and after the therapy. Beta-cell function was evaluated by the OGTT-derived disposition index, whereas insulin sensitivity was evaluated by Matsuda's insulin sensitivity index. RESULTS: After 4.0 ± 1.5 months of MNT, mean HbA1c and body mass index significantly decreased from 9.6 ± 1.8% to 7.2 ± 1.0% and from 26.9 ± 4.1 to 25.4 ± 3.7 kg/m2 (both P < 0.001), while the median disposition index and Matsuda's index significantly increased from 0.34 (0.20-0.68) to 0.88 (0.53-1.52) (P < 0.001) and from 4.70 (2.95-5.93) to 5.17 (3.48-6.89) (P = 0.003), respectively. The disposition index was significantly correlated with HbA1c levels both before and after MNT (r = -0.61 and -0.68; both P < 0.001). The magnitude of the correlation after MNT was not different from that before MNT (P = 0.42). Matsuda's index was correlated not with HbA1c levels but with body mass index, both before (r = 0.07 [P = 0.57] and r = -0.58 [P < 0.001]) and after MNT (r = -0.01 [P = 0.95] and r = -0.52 [P < 0.001]). CONCLUSIONS: Beta-cell function was improved in conjunction with glycemic control after MNT in patients with newly-diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus. Insulin sensitivity was linked with weight control rather than glycemic control.

Organizing pneumonia (OP) is a complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) and a manifestation of peripheral airway/alveolar inflammation. Recently, alveolar nitric oxide concentration (Calv) has been revealed as a noninvasive marker of peripheral airway inflammation; however, whether Calv levels are associated with OP and peripheral airway in patients after allo-HSCT remains unclear. Herein, we evaluated whether Calv levels could reflect the presence of OP and structural airway changes in patients after allo-HSCT. We measured the eNO levels of 38 patients (6 with OP and 32 without OP) who underwent allo-HSCT. Three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) analysis of the airway was performed in 19 patients. We found that in patients with OP, Calv levels were significantly higher than in those without OP (10.6 vs. 5.5 ppb, p < 0.01). Receiver-operating characteristic analyses revealed a Calv cut-off value for OP detection of 10.2 ppb. No significant differences in the patient characteristics, except for the presence of OP (p < 0.01), were noted between the two groups stratified by the Calv cut-off value. Three-dimensional CT images of the airway revealed gradually increasing positive correlations between Calv levels and airway wall area of the third-, fourth-, and fifth-generation bronchi (r = 0.20, 0.31, 0.38; p = 0.42, 0.19, 0.038, respectively), indicating that Calv levels are strongly correlated with the wall thickness of the distal bronchi. Our results suggest that the Calv level may be a useful noninvasive detectable marker for OP after an allo-HSCT.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Understanding morning-evening variation in metabolic state is critical for managing metabolic disorders. We aimed to characterize this variation from the viewpoints of insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity, including their relevance to the circadian rhythm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 14 and 10 people without diabetes were enrolled, and underwent a 75-g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp study, respectively. Participants completed the OGTT or hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp at 08.00 hours and 20.00 hours in random order. Before each study, hair follicles were collected. In mice, phosphorylation levels of protein kinase B were examined in the liver and muscle by western blotting. RESULTS: Glucose tolerance was better at 08 .00 hours, which was explained by the higher 1-h insulin secretion on OGTT and increased skeletal muscle insulin sensitivity on hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamp. Hepatic insulin sensitivity, estimated by the hepatic insulin resistance index on OGTT, was better at 20.00 hours. The 1-h insulin secretion and hepatic insulin resistance index correlated significantly with Per2 messenger ribonucleic acid expression. The change (evening value - morning value) in the glucose infusion rate correlated significantly with the change in non-esterified fatty acid, but not with clock gene expressions. The change in non-esterified fatty acid correlated significantly with E4bp4 messenger ribonucleic acid expression and the change in cortisol. In mice, phosphorylation of protein kinase B was decreased in the liver and increased in muscle in the beginning of the active period as, expected from the human study. CONCLUSIONS: Glucose metabolism in each tissue differed between the morning and evening, partly reflecting lipid metabolism, clock genes and cortisol levels. Deeper knowledge of these associations might be useful for ameliorating metabolic disorders.

Objective This study aimed to reveal the screening performance of a color-changeable chewing gum test for a decreased masticatory function in the assessment of oral hypofunction in patients with metabolic diseases. Methods We analyzed 1,000 patients with metabolic diseases, including diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and hyperuricemia. A decreased masticatory function was diagnosed by a gummy jelly test. Patients were asked to chew a test gum, which changed from green to red by thorough mastication, 60 times for 1 minute. The color change was visually evaluated using the color scale, from 1 (green-dominant) to 10 points (red-dominant), and was colorimetrically quantified as delta E in the L*a*b* color space. The screening performance for a decreased masticatory function was evaluated with the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results Seventy-seven patients (7.7%) were diagnosed with a decreased masticatory function. The mean color scale and delta E of the gum test were 6.7±1.8 points and 42.9±6.7 units, respectively. The area under the ROC curve was 0.822 (95% confidence interval, 0.768-0.872) for the color scale and 0.838 (0.781-0.890) for delta E (p=0.41). The optimal cut-off point of the color scale was 5.5 (5.0-6.5) points, whereas that of delta E was 37.7 (35.5-38.8) units. The optimal cut-off points were not significantly different between the subgroups divided by clinical characteristics. Conclusions A color-changeable chewing gum test using the color scale as well as delta E would be a useful tool for screening patients with metabolic diseases for a decreased masticatory function in the assessment of oral hypofunction.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to reveal lifestyle changes and their impact on glycemic control and weight control in patients with diabetes during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic in Japan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 1,402 outpatients with diabetes at a clinic in Osaka, Japan, who responded to an interview sheet regarding lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic between 28 March and 30 May 2020. The association of lifestyle changes with hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and weight changes from February to May 2020 was investigated using the linear regression model. We also investigated the association with clinically important change of HbA1c (by ≥0.3%) and bodyweight (by ≥3%), using the cumulative link model. RESULTS: Leisure time and other outside physical activities were decreased in one-quarter of patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, whereas the amount of meals and snacks was decreased and increased in approximately 10%, respectively. The change in leisure time physical activities was inversely associated with HbA1c and weight changes, whereas the quantitative change of meals with the decline in eating out and that of snacks were positively associated with HbA1c and weight changes (all P < 0.05). The quantitative change of meals without the decline in eating out was also positively associated with weight change (P = 0.012). The cumulative link model for clinically important HbA1c and weight change showed broadly similar associations, except for that between snacks and bodyweight (P = 0.15). CONCLUSIONS: A considerable number of outpatients with diabetes experienced lifestyle changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. The lifestyle changes were associated with HbA1c and weight changes.

RESUMEN

Quantum metrology with entangled resources aims to achieve sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit by harnessing quantum effects even in the presence of environmental noise. So far, sensitivity has been mainly discussed from the viewpoint of reducing statistical errors under the assumption of perfect knowledge of a noise model. However, we cannot always obtain complete information about a noise model due to coherence time fluctuations, which are frequently observed in experiments. Such unknown fluctuating noise leads to systematic errors and nullifies the quantum advantages. Here, we propose an error-mitigated quantum metrology that can filter out unknown fluctuating noise with the aid of purification-based quantum error mitigation. We demonstrate that our protocol mitigates systematic errors and recovers superclassical scaling in a practical situation with time-inhomogeneous bias-inducing noise. Our result is the first demonstration to reveal the usefulness of purification-based error mitigation for unknown fluctuating noise, thus paving the way not only for practical quantum metrology but also for quantum computation affected by such noise.

Eyelid myoclonia with absences (EMA) is an epileptic syndrome characterised by eyelid myoclonia with or without absences, eye closure-induced paroxysms, and photosensitivity. The relationship between EMA and epileptic negative myoclonus has not previously been reported. Herein, we describe a case of a 10-year-old girl who presented with eyelid myoclonia, eye closure-induced paroxysms, and photosensitivity, which was compatible with the diagnosis of EMA. Ictal EEG depicted an eye closure-induced diffuse 3.0-4.5-Hz polyspike-and-wave complex, which was accompanied by eye fluttering (eyelid myoclonia). EMG disclosed a brief interruption (60-140 mseconds) of tonic contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle, which was associated with the polyspike-and-wave complex on EEG. The findings led to the diagnosis of epileptic negative myoclonus. Eye closure-induced eyelid epileptic negative myoclonus, demonstrated in this patient, may be an atypical seizure type of EMA that represents an intermediate between eyelid myoclonia and epileptic negative myoclonus.
