Arsenic (As) pollution in soils is a pervasive environmental issue. Biochar immobilization offers a promising solution for addressing soil As contamination. The efficiency of biochar in immobilizing As in soils primarily hinges on the characteristics of both the soil and the biochar. However, the influence of a specific property on As immobilization varies among different studies, and the development and application of arsenic passivation materials based on biochar often rely on empirical knowledge. To enhance immobilization efficiency and reduce labor and time costs, a machine learning (ML) model was employed to predict As immobilization efficiency before biochar application. In this study, we collected a dataset comprising 182 data points on As immobilization efficiency from 17 publications to construct three ML models. The results demonstrated that the random forest (RF) model outperformed gradient boost regression tree and support vector regression models in predictive performance. Relative importance analysis and partial dependence plots based on the RF model were conducted to identify the most crucial factors influencing As immobilization. These findings highlighted the significant roles of biochar application time and biochar pH in As immobilization efficiency in soils. Furthermore, the study revealed that Fe-modified biochar exhibited a substantial improvement in As immobilization. These insights can facilitate targeted biochar property design and optimization of biochar application conditions to enhance As immobilization efficiency.

Toxoplasmosis, caused by the parasite Toxoplasma gondii, is a life-threatening infection that may occur following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). Toxoplasmic encephalitis (TE) is one of the most severe manifestations of this infection and often results in unsatisfactory therapeutic outcomes, especially regarding neurological damage. Recent studies have demonstrated that human umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hUC-MSCs) can significantly aid in neural repair and remodeling. Furthermore, hUC-MSCs have been shown to reduce the risk of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) associated with the reduction or discontinuation of immunosuppressive therapy. In this case report, we present a pediatric patient who developed TE as a complication of haploidentical HSCT. The patient received a combined treatment regimen of standard anti-Toxoplasma therapy and adjunctive hUC-MSC therapy. The outcomes were satisfactory. The patient regained consciousness, maintained a stable body temperature, and regained the ability to perform daily activities independently. Additionally, next-generation sequencing revealed a decrease in Toxoplasma DNA sequences in the blood and cerebrospinal fluid to undetectable levels. This case report underscores the potential of hUC-MSCs as a promising therapeutic modality for TE.

The intestinal barrier system protects the human body from harmful factors, by continuously renewing the intestinal epithelium, tight junctions and enteric microbes. However, dietary fat can harm the intestinal epithelial barrier enhancing gut permeability. In recent years, Apolipoprotein A-I has attracted much attention because of its anti-inflammatory properties. Numerous studies have demonstrated that Apolipoprotein A-I can regulate mucosal immune cells, inhibit the progression of inflammation, promote epithelial proliferation and repair, and maintain physical barrier function; it can also regulate angiogenesis, thereby improving local circulation. This article is intended to elucidate the mechanism by which Apolipoprotein A-I improves intestinal barrier damage caused by dietary fat and to review the role of Apolipoprotein A-I in maintaining intestinal homeostasis.

Conventional hyperspectral cameras cascade lenses and spectrometers to acquire the spectral datacube, which forms the fundamental framework for hyperspectral imaging. However, this cascading framework involves tradeoffs among spectral and imaging performances when the system is driven toward miniaturization. Here, we propose a spectral singlet lens that unifies optical imaging and computational spectrometry functions, enabling the creation of minimalist, miniaturized and high-performance hyperspectral cameras. As a paradigm, we capitalize on planar liquid crystal optics to implement the proposed framework, with each liquid-crystal unit cell acting as both phase modulator and electrically tunable spectral filter. Experiments with various targets show that the resulting millimeter-scale hyperspectral camera exhibits both high spectral fidelity ( > 95%) and high spatial resolutions ( ~1.7 times the diffraction limit). The proposed "two-in-one" framework can resolve the conflicts between spectral and imaging resolutions, which paves a practical pathway for advancing hyperspectral imaging systems toward miniaturization and portable applications.

Marine toxins pose a significant safety risk, leading to human intoxications and causing substantial economic losses in seafood-producing regions. The development of rapid, cost-effective, efficient, and reliable approaches for the containment of these substances is therefore crucial in order to mitigate the adverse impact of marine toxins. This research conducted a comprehensive review on the toxicity and influencing factors of marine toxins production. Additionally, depuration technologies, including adsorption, advanced oxidation processes, biodegradation, heating treatment, temporary maintenance and purification, and drug inhibition, were systematically summarized. The study also provided a comparative analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of various depuration technologies and proposed strategies for future development.

Efficient and stable red perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) demonstrate promising potential in high-definition displays and biomedical applications. Although significant progress has been made in device performance, meeting commercial demands remains a challenge in the aspects of long-term stability and high external quantum efficiency (EQE). Here, an in situ crystallization regulation strategy is developed for optimizing red perovskite films through ingenious vapor design. Mixed vapor containing dimethyl sulfoxide and carbon disulfide (CS2) is incorporated to conventional annealing, which contributes to thermodynamics dominated perovskite crystallization for well-aligned cascade phase arrangement. Additionally, the perovskite surface defect density is minimized by the CS2 molecule adsorption. Consequently, the target perovskite films exhibit smooth exciton energy transfer, reduced defect density, and blocked ion migration pathways. Leveraging these advantages, spectrally stable red PeLEDs are obtained featuring emission at 668, 656, and 648 nm, which yield record peak EQEs of 30.08%, 32.14%, and 29.04%, along with prolonged half-lifetimes of 47.7, 60.0, and 43.7 h at the initial luminances of 140, 250, and 270 cd m-2, respectively. This work provides a universal strategy for optimizing perovskite crystallization and represents a significant stride toward the commercialization of red PeLEDs.

The phase-shifting structured light illumination technique is widely used in imaging but often relies on mechanical translation stages or spatial light modulators, leading to system instability, low displacement accuracy, and limited integration feasibility. In response to these challenges, we propose and demonstrate an approach for generating far-field phase-shifting structured light using a polarization multiplexing metasurface. By controlling the polarization states of incident and transmitted light, the metasurface creates a three-step displacement of structured light, eliminating the need to move samples or illumination sources. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate microscopic imaging using structured light illumination generated by metasurfaces, extracting high-frequency information from objects, and surpassing the diffraction limit. The proposed metasurface platform offers a promising approach for developing compact and robust phase-shifting imaging systems, with broad prospects in quantitative detection, machine vision, and beyond.

A new microsporidian disease of the pond-reared ridgetail white prawn, Palaemon carinicauda, was found in China. Light microscopy, pathology, and scanning electron microscopy showed that the parasite infected the host's skeletal muscle tissue and formed spherical sporophorous vesicles (SPOVs). Electron microscopy revealed that its merogonic life stages developed in direct contact with the host cytoplasm. The sporogonic life stages underwent octosporoblastic sporogony with the formation of eight uninucleate spores in each SPOV. Fresh SPOVs were 5.4 ± 0.55 µm in diameter. The octospores were oval and measured 2.3 × 1.5 µm (fresh) and 1.96 × 1.17 µm (fixed). The isofilar polar filament was coiled with 9-10 turns and arranged in two rows. Phylogenetic analysis based on the SSU rRNA gene suggests that this microsporidium has close affinities with members of the genera Potaspora and Apotaspora, but represents an independent generic taxon. We therefore propose the establishment of a new genus and species (Paospora carinifang n. gen., n. sp.) within the family Spragueidae. We also propose a taxonomic revision to transfer Potaspora macrobrachium to this new genus and reclassify it as Paospora macrobrachium comb. nov.

Paraburkholderia phytofirmans PsJN is a plant symbiotic bacterium that can colonize a broad spectrum of plant hosts and frequently shows beneficial effects on plant growth. Exopolysaccharide (EPS) is known to be important in plant-bacteria interactions. Previously, we reported that EPS is required for PsJN to survive from drought stress and colonize in pea (Pisum sativum) under drought condition. However, whether EPS is necessary for PsJN to promote plant growth remains unknown. In this work, a comparative study was conducted between the wild-type PsJN and its ∆bceQ mutant that lacks EPS to investigate the role of EPS in PsJN to confer drought-stress tolerance on pea plant. Our results showed that wild type PsJN, but not the ∆bceQ mutant, promoted pea seed germination and seedlings growth under drought stress. Pea plants inoculated with the wild type PsJN had a higher level of drought tolerance, as shown by a better vegetative growth and enhanced nodule formation, than plants inoculated with the ∆bceQ mutant. Moreover, EPS plays a role in the plant colonization under drought stress, because the ∆bceQ mutant was unable to colonize pea seeds and roots as effectively as the wild type PsJN. Further, expression of the EPS biosynthesis genes in the bceOVN operon of the wild type PsJN was induced by the presence of glucose. Overall, this study demonstrated that PsJN can promote pea plant growth under drought conditions and EPS is required for PsJN to confer beneficial effects to host plant.

Multidimensional solitons are prevalent in numerous research fields. In orientationally ordered soft matter system, three-dimensional director solitons exemplify the localized distortion of molecular orientation. However, their precise manipulation remains challenging due to unpredictable and uncontrolled generation. Here, we utilize preimposed programmable photopatterning in nematics to control the kinetics of director solitons. This enables both unidirectional and bidirectional generation at specific locations and times, confinement within micron-scaled patterns of diverse shapes, and directed propagation along predefined trajectories. A focused dynamical model provides insight into the origins of these solitons and aligns closely with experimental observations, underscoring the pivotal role of anchoring conditions in soliton manipulation. Our findings pave the way for diverse fundamental research avenues and promising applications, including microcargo transportation and optical information processing.

PURPOSE: To develop and validate a nomogram based on 3D-PDU parameters and clinical characteristics to predict LNM and LVSI in early-stage cervical cancer preoperatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of first diagnosis 138 patients with cervical cancer who had undergone 3D-PDU examination before radical hysterectomy plus lymph dissection between 2014 and 2019 were enrolled for this study. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the 3D-PDU parameters and selected clinicopathologic features and develop a nomogram to predict the probability of LNM and LVSI in the early stage. ROC curve was used to evaluate model differentiation, calibration curve and Hosmer-Lemeshow test were used to evaluate calibration, and DCA was used to evaluate clinical practicability. RESULTS: Menopause status, FIGO stage and VI were independent predictors of LNM. BMI and maximum tumor diameter were independent predictors of LVSI. The predicted AUC of the LNM and LSVI models were 0.845 (95%CI,0.765-0.926) and 0.714 (95%CI,0.615-0.813). Calibration curve and H-L test (LNM groups P = 0.478; LVSI P = 0.783) all showed that the predicted value of the model had a good fit with the actual observed value, and DCA indicated that the model had a good clinical net benefit. CONCLUSION: The proposed nomogram based on 3D-PDU parameters and clinical characteristics has been proposed to predict LNM and LVSI with high accuracy, demonstrating for the first time the potential of non-invasive prediction. The probability derived from this nomogram may have the potential to provide valuable guidance for physicians to develop clinical individualized treatment plans of FIGO patients with early cervical cancer.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the effectiveness and safety of tofacitinib in treating systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with arthritis. METHODS: This research was a retrospective cohort study that focused on SLE patients who had arthritis and were treated with tofacitinib at the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology from January 2020 to January 2022. Clinical outcomes, disease activity, immunological parameters, and adverse events were systematically evaluated pre- and post-treatment at 4, 12, and 24 weeks. RESULTS: Twenty-two patients were analyzed. At the 4-week mark, 5 (22.7%) patients were partially relieved, and 17 (77.3%) unalleviated. By the 12-week assessment, CR off corticosteroids was observed in four patients (18.2%), and CR on corticosteroids was seen in six patients (27.3%), with an additional six (27.3%) maintaining partial remission. At 24 weeks after treatment, three patients (13.6%) achieved CR off corticosteroids, ten patients (45.5%) achieved CR on corticosteroids, and all patients received remission. Compared to before treatment, The SLEDAI and PGA scores significantly improved. The level of C3 was increased significantly, and the absolute CD3+ T cell count, the 28-tender and the 28-swollen joint count, and the levels of serum IL-6 were significantly decreased at 24 weeks after treatment. CONCLUSION: Tofacitinib demonstrates significant therapeutic potential in SLE patients with arthritis, with a safety profile, and the therapeutic mechanism of tofacitinib may be related to reducing IL-6 expression and inhibiting T cell activation. To clarify the impact of transportation on the sensitive and fragile ecosystems of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau and major ecological safety barrier functions, soil samples within 0-25 m on the roadside were collected from sections of national highways such as G214, G213, G345, G109, G316, and G317, and the contents of six heavy metals were analyzed. Then, the degree of heavy metal pollution and the risk of ecological hazards were evaluated using the single-factor pollution index method (Pi), Nemero comprehensive index method (PN), and potential ecological risk index method (RI). The results showed that the heavy metal contents of As, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn in the soil of important transportation national roads on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau ranged from 5.65 to 176.00, 0.04 to 0.27, 0.01 to 0.14, 9.52 to 113.00, 9.16 to 54.50, and 24.70 to 109.00 mg·kg-1, respectively, showing high variability. In some sections of the soil, the values of the elements As, Cd, and Hg were higher than the local soil background values. The single-factor pollution index of heavy metals in roadside soil was Pi (As) > Pi (Hg) > Pi(Cd) > Pi (Pb) > Pi (Ni) > Pi (Zn). The Nemero comprehensive pollution index ranged from 0.41 to 9.20, with an average value of 1.53, indicating clean and mild pollution. Some areas showed a moderate or severe pollution. The average potential ecological risk index of the research section was 106.2, and the soil was generally in a state of no pollution and light pollution. Only two road sections had soil heavy metal enrichment reaching moderate and strong ecological hazards. The comprehensive potential risk of the G213a road section indicated moderate to severe ecological risk, mainly contributed by Hg, As, and Cd. The comprehensive pollution risk of the G317 road section indicated mild to moderate ecological risk, mainly contributed by Hg and Cd. The heavy metal content in the soil of the Qinghai Tibet Plateau road area was not significantly correlated with the roadside distance and soil depth but was significantly positively correlated with the annual average temperature (P < 0.05). In all, there was a trend of heavy metal input into the soil environment in areas with intense human activities and high traffic flow during road construction on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.

Amomum villosum Lour. (A. villosum) is a valuable herbaceous plant that produces the famous traditional Chinese medicine Amori Fructus. Identifying molecular markers associated with the growth of A. villosum can facilitate molecular marker-assisted breeding of the plant. This study employed 75 A. villosum accessions as the test material and utilized 71 pairs of polymorphic simple sequence repeat (SSR) molecular markers to genotype the population. The study analyzed the association between SSR markers and phenotypic traits through the linkage imbalance and population structure analysis. Candidate genes associated with the molecular markers were also identified. The results showed that the phenotypic diversity index range of the 12 agronomic traits was 4.081-4.312 and conformed to a normal distribution. Moreover, 293 allelic variations were detected in the 75 accessions, with an average of 5.32 amplified alleles per loci, ranging from 3 to 8. The maximum number of amplified alleles for AVL12 was 8. The population structure and cluster analysis indicated that the accessions could be divided into two subgroups. Using the mixed linear model (MLM) model of population structure (Q)+kinship matrix (K) for association analysis, three SSR molecular markers significantly associated with the agronomic traits were detected. Fluorescence quantification was used to analyze the expression levels of six candidate genes, and it was found that three of the genes were differentially expressed in phenotypically different accessions. This study is the first to use SSR markers for genome-wide association study (GWAS) mapping and identification of the associated agronomic traits in A. villosum. The results of this study provide a basis for identifying genetic markers for growth traits for marker-assisted breeding in A. villosum.

RESUMEN

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has highlighted the pivotal role of the immune response in determining the progression and severity of viral infections. In this paper, we review the most recent studies on the complicated dynamics between SARS-CoV-2 and the host immune system, highlight the importance of understanding these dynamics in developing effective treatments and formulate potent management strategies for COVID-19. We describe the activation of the host's innate immunity and the subsequent adaptive immune response following infection with SARS-CoV-2. In addition, the review emphasizes the immune evasion strategies of the SARS-CoV-2, including inhibition of interferon production and induction of cytokine storms, along with the resulting clinical outcomes. Finally, we assess the efficacy of current treatment strategies, including antiviral drugs, monoclonal antibodies, and anti-inflammatory treatments, and discuss their role in providing immunity and preventing severe disease.

The traditional preparation method of ratiometric probes faces challenges such as cumbersome preparation and low sensitivity. Thus, there is an urgent need to provide a simple method of preparing a highly sensitive ratiometric probe. Here, Eu3+-doped zinc-based organic framework (Eu/Zn-MOF) was prepared through hydrothermal method for the detection of tetracycline analogs (TCs). Under the same excitation conditions, the probe can simultaneously display valuable fluorescence and second-order scattering signals. The developed probe enabled specific identification and fast detection (1 min) of TCs, including tetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline, and chlortetracycline. The linear detection ranges of tetracycline, oxytetracycline, doxycycline and chlortetracycline were respectively 100 nM - 200 µM, 100 nM - 200 µM, 98 nM - 195 µM, and 97 nM - 291 µM, and the corresponding detection limits were respectively 15.79 nM, 20.83 nM, 15.31 nM, and 28.30 nM. The developed sensor was successfully applied to detect TCs in real samples, and the recovery rate was from 92.54 % to 109.69 % and the relative standard deviation was from 0.04 % to 2.97 %. Moreover, the heterometallic Eu/Zn-MOF was designed as a ratiometric neuron for Boolean logic computing and information encryption based on the specific identification of TCs. As a proof of concept, molecular steganography was successfully employed to encode, store, and conceal information by transforming the specific identification patterns of Eu/Zn-MOF into binary strings. This study is anticipated to advance the application of metal-organic frameworks in logic detection and information security, and bridging the gap between molecular sensors and the realm of information.

BACKGROUND: Current guidelines recommend bismuth-containing quadruple therapy for patients newly diagnosed with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. We aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of tetracycline administered three times daily versus four times daily in bismuth-containing quadruple therapy for first-line treatment of H. pylori infection. METHODS: This multicenter, noninferiority, randomized controlled study, conducted in China, recruited treatment-naïve adults with H. pylori infection, randomized 1:1 into two treatment groups to receive either of the following bismuth-containing quadruple therapies: esomeprazole 20 mg twice-daily; bismuth 220 mg twice-daily; amoxicillin 1000 mg twice-daily; and tetracycline 500 mg three times daily (TET-T) versus 500 mg four times daily (TET-F). At least 6 weeks post-treatment, a 13C-urea breath test was performed to evaluate H. pylori eradication. RESULTS: In total, 406 patients were randomly assigned to the two treatment groups. Intention-to-treat eradication rates were 91.63% (186/203; 95% confidence interval [CI] 87.82%-95.44%) versus 90.15% (183/203; 95% CI 86.05%-94.25%) (p = 0.0005) and per-protocol eradication rates were 95.34% (184/193; 95% CI 92.36%-98.31%) versus 95.72% (179/187; 95% CI 92.82%-98.62%) (p = 0.0002) for the TET-T and TET-F group, respectively. TET-T-treated patients had a lower incidence of adverse effects than TET-F-treated patients (21.61% vs. 31.63%, p = 0.024), with no significant differences in compliance to treatment between the groups. CONCLUSION: As a first-line therapy for H. pylori infection, the eradication rate of the TET-T therapy was noninferior to that of the TET-F therapy while significantly reducing the incidence of adverse reactions. RESUMEN

To explore the mechanism of Liangfang Wenjing Decoction regulating coiled-coil-helix coiled-coil-helix domain containing 4(CHCHD4) in the treatment of hypoxia on endometriosis(EMs) with cold coagulation and blood stasis. The rat model of cold coagulation and blood stasis syndrome was prepared by the ice-water bath method, and then the EMs model was established by autologous intimal transplantation. The rats were randomly divided into model group, low, medium, and high(4.7, 9.4, and 18.8 g·kg~(-1)) dose groups of Liangfang Wenjing Decoction, Shaofu Zhuyu Decoction group, and sham group, with 10 rats in each group. The rats were given intragastric administration for four weeks. During the modeling, the general condition and vaginal smear of rats were observed, and the blood flow of ears and uterus were detected by laser speckle contrast imaging(LSCI) to judge the syndrome of cold coagulation and blood stasis. After the administration, the general condition of the rats was observed, and the area of ectopic lesions was measured by caliper. The localization and expression of CHCHD4 and hypoxia inducible factors-1α(HIF-1α) were detected by immunohistochemistry, and the mRNA and protein expressions of CHCHD4 and HIF-1α were detected by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR) and Western blot. The primary culture of ectopic endometrial stromal cells(ESCs) from EMs patients was performed, and the CHCHD4 overexpression plasmid was constructed and transfected to establish the ESCs model of CHCHD4 overexpression. The cells were divided into the control group, CHCHD4 overexpression group, CHCHD4 overexpression+control serum group, and CHCHD4 overexpression+Liangfang Wenjing Decoction serum group. The protein expression of CHCHD4 and HIF-1α was detected by Western blot, and the glucose consumption and lactic acid level were detected. The cell proliferation was detected by MTT assay. The experiment found that compared with normal rats, the modeling rats showed symptoms of cold coagulation and blood stasis, such as mental malaise, reduced diet and drinking water, disordered estrous cycle, and blocked blood circulation in ears and uterine microvessels. Compared with the sham group, the ectopic lesions in the model group were uplifted, and the mRNA and protein expressions of CHCHD4 and HIF-1α were significantly increased(P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the symptoms of cold coagulation and blood stasis in each treatment group were improved, and the area of ectopic lesions was significantly reduced(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The mRNA and protein expression levels of CHCHD4 and HIF-1α were significantly decreased(P<0.05 or P<0.01). In the cell model, compared with the control group, the expression of CHCHD4, HIF-1α protein, glucose consumption, lactic acid level, and cell proliferation activity in the CHCHD4 overexpression group were significantly increased(P<0.01). Compared with the CHCHD4 overexpression group, there was no significant change in each index in the control serum group, while the protein expression of CHCHD4 and HIF-1α in the Liangfang Wenjing Decoction serum group was decreased significantly(P<0.05 or P<0.01). The glucose consumption, lactic acid level, and cell proliferation activity decreased significantly(P<0.01). It can be seen from the above that the therapeutic effect of Liangfang Wenjing Decoction on EMs with cold coagulation and blood stasis might be related to reducing the expression of CHCHD4 and then improving the hypoxia of ectopic lesions and ectopic ESCs.

BACKGROUND: Atrial Fibrillation (AF) is known to be associated with a negative emotional state. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are important tools for evaluating the endpoints of AF management. This study aims to examine the correlation between personality types and PROs in patients with AF. METHODS: All included subjects were newly diagnosed with AF fewer than one month, and their personality types were assessed using the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire (EPQ). Quality of life (QoL) was measured using the Atrial Fibrillation Effect on Quality of Life (AFEQT) questionnaire. Anxiety and depression were assessed using the General Anxiety Scale (GAD-7) and the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. We constructed stepwise linear regression analyses for factors related to the QoL and emotional state in patients with AF. RESULTS: A total of 531 AF patients completed the survey and were categorized into four groups based on their personality types. Of these patients (mean age: 67.12 ± 10.93 years, 50.28% male), 357 (67.23%) had paroxysmal AF, and 16.95% (n = 90) had a sanguine personality. Compared to patients with other personality types, those with a sanguine personality had the highest average AFEQT scores (P < 0.001) and the lowest scores of GAD-7 and PHQ-9 scales (P < 0.05). Furthermore, multiple linear regression analyses suggested that sanguine personality was also independently associated with better QoL and emotional states (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: There is a significant association between the personality types and PROs in AF patients.
