RESUMEN

Intercropping can improve light interception and crop yield on limited farmlands. The light interception rate in intercropping is determined by row configuration. Quantifying the spatio-temporal light interception of intercrops is very important for improving crop yields by optimizing the row configuration. A two-year field experiment was conducted at two sites to quantify the responses of the light interception rate of intercrops to five treatments: two rows of maize alternated with three rows of soybean (2M3S), two rows of maize alternated four rows of soybean (2M4S), two rows of maize alternated five rows of soybean (2M5S), sole soybean (SS), and sole maize (SM). We developed a multiple regression model based on the sine of the solar elevation angle (sin(h)) and crop leaf area density (LAD) to quantify the spatio-temporal light interception of intercrops. The predicted light interception rate was positively correlated with the measured values of photosynthetically active radiation (R2 > 0.814) and dry matter (R2 > 0.830). Increasing soybean rows led to an increase in light interception of both soybean and the lower layer of maize. However, this also resulted in a decrease in light interception in the upper layer of maize. At the two sites, compared to 2M3S, the annual average cumulative light interception of soybean in 2M5S increased by 44.73% and 47.18%, that of the lower layer of maize in 2M5S increased by 9.25% and 8.04%, and that of whole canopy of maize decreased by 13.77% and 17.74% respectively. The changes in dry matter and yield of intercrops were consistent with the change in light interception, which further verified the high accuracy of the light interception model. The annual average maize yield of 2M5S was 6.03% and 6.16% lower but the soybean yield was 23.69% and 28.52% higher than that of 2M3S. On the basis of system yield, the best performance was recorded in 2M4S at the two sites. In summary, the newly created light interception model performs well in the quantification of the temporal and spatial changes in crop light interception in strip intercropping and has potential applications in other configurations. Optimizing row configurations across climatic regions to enhance light interception and yield at the system level will become a future target.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to explore the association between net vertebral artery flow volume (NVAFV), calculated through color duplex ultrasonography, and posterior circulation infarction (PCI) in patients with severe intracranial vertebral artery (VA) stenosis. METHODS: 234 patients with severe intracranial VA stenosis (≥70%) were categorized into the PCI group (n = 139) and the non-PCI group (n = 95) based on cranial MRI diagnosis. The correlation between NVAFV and CT perfusion data was analyzed, and the occurrence of PCI under diverse PCI mechanisms was also investigated. Multifactorial logistic regression and stratified analysis was performed to analyze the association between NVAFV and PCI. Lastly, generalized additive models and smooth curve fitting was utilized to outline relationship between NVAFV and PCI. RESULTS: NVAFV showed a significant correlation with cerebral blood flow, mean transmit time, and time to peak. In the large artery atherosclerosis mechanism, a reduction in NVAFV correlated with a gradual rise in PCI cases (p = 0.002), while this trend lacked significance in the branch artery occlusive disease mechanism (p = 0.993). In the fully adjusted model, each 10 mL/min increase in NVAFV reduced PCI incidence by 11% (OR 0.890, 95% CI 0.840-0.943, p < 0.001), Sensitivity analysis showed similar results; NVAFV presented different PCI risks among various glucose level subgroups, the OR (95% CI) for PCI was 0.788 (0.684, 0.906) in low-glucose group (T1), 0.968 (0.878, 1.066) in moderate-glucose group (T2), and 0.886 (0.801, 0.979) in high-glucose group (T3). Smooth curve fitting demonstrated a linear negative association between NVAFV and PCI. CONCLUSION: NVAFV demonstrated an association with PCI in patients with severe intracranial VA stenosis, it can serve as a reference for identifying high-risk populations of PCI; however, it must be considered in combination with glucose.

Background and objective: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) with insulin resistance (IR) is prone to damage the vascular endothelial, leading to the formation of vulnerable carotid plaques and increasing ischemic stroke (IS) risk. The purpose of this study is to develop a nomogram model based on carotid ultrasound radiomics for predicting IS risk in T2DM patients. Methods: 198 T2DM patients were enrolled and separated into study and control groups based on IS history. After manually delineating carotid plaque region of interest (ROI) from images, radiomics features were identified and selected using the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression to calculate the radiomics score (RS). A combinatorial logistic machine learning model and nomograms were created using RS and clinical features like the triglyceride-glucose index. The three models were assessed using area under curve (AUC) and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Patients were divided into the training set and the testing set by the ratio of 0.7. 4 radiomics features were selected. RS and clinical variables were all statically significant in the training set and were used to create a combination model and a prediction nomogram. The combination model (radiomics + clinical nomogram) had the largest AUC in both the training set and the testing set (0.898 and 0.857), and DCA analysis showed that it had a higher overall net benefit compared to the other models. Conclusions: This study created a carotid ultrasound radiomics machine-learning-based IS risk nomogram for T2DM patients with carotid plaques. Its diagnostic performance and clinical prediction capabilities enable accurate, convenient, and customized medical care.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the correlation between subclavian steal syndrome and posterior circulation infarction using magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: A total of 294 patients diagnosed with subclavian steal syndrome using carotid Doppler ultrasonography were retrospectively included. According to the magnetic resonance imaging results, they were divided into posterior circulation infarction group and nonposterior circulation infarction group. Clinical indicators and carotid Doppler ultrasound parameters of patients were collected, and they were screened to establish a multiple logistic regression model. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the established multiple logistic regression model was performed, and the area under the curve was calculated to evaluate the predictive efficiency of the model. RESULTS: After statistical analysis of all parameters of the 2 groups of patients, a total of 10 parameters were included in multiple logistic regression to establish a model. The results showed a correlation between posterior circulation infarction and subclavian artery occlusion, grade III subclavian steal syndrome, gender, vulnerable plaques, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score, and age. After the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis of the model, the area under the curve for the multiple logistic regression model was 0.773. CONCLUSIONS: The multiparameter composite model based on clinical baseline data and carotid Doppler ultrasonography parameters can effectively predict posterior circulation infarction and offer novel insight for clinical diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to examine the development of a clinical care pathway utilizing an action research methodology for male patients with urethral stricture, and to assess the psychological and quality of life outcomes following the implementation of this pathway. METHODS: Ninety patients diagnosed with urethral stricture, admitted to our hospital between May 2021 and May 2022, were selected as the study cohort. Employing a random number method, these patients were allocated into an observation group and a control group, each comprising 45 individuals. The control cohort employs standard care protocols for individuals with urethral stenosis, while the experimental group employs an action research methodology to develop a clinical care pathway specific to the management of patients with urethral stenosis, with an intervention cycle of 3 months. The investigation evaluated the impact of the intervention by scrutinizing pre- and post-intervention data through the utilization of the WHO Quality of Life Scale (WHOQOL-BREF), in addition to the Anxiety Rating Scale and the Depression Rating Scale. RESULTS: Prior to the intervention, no significant differences were observed in WHOQOL-BREF scores across dimensions, as well as anxiety and depression scores between the 2 groups (P > .05). Subsequent to the intervention, the patients in the observation group exhibited significantly higher scores across all WHOQOL-BREF dimensions and total scores compared to the control group, with statistical significance (P < .05). Moreover, anxiety and depression scores in the observation group were markedly lower than those in the control group, demonstrating statistical significance (P < .05). CONCLUSION: The implementation of a clinical nursing pathway rooted in action research methodology proves to be an effective strategy for enhancing clinical nursing practices, elevating patient quality of life, and diminishing the prevalence of anxiety and depression.

BACKGROUND: Superficial temporal artery-middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass combined with an encephaloduromyosynangiosis (EDMS) had gained significant role in treating chronic cerebral ischemia. Invasiveness and costs of intraoperative digital subtraction angiography (DSA) limited its application in operations. OBJECTIVE: To find the reliable parameters for determining bypass patency with intraoperative micro-Doppler (IMD) sonography and compare the diagnostic accuracy of indocyanine green (ICG) videoangiography with IMD in combined bypass. METHOD: One hundred fifty bypass procedures were included and divided into patent and non-patent groups according to postoperative computed tomography angiography (CTA) within 72 h. The surgical process was divided into four phases in the following order: preparation phase (phase 1), anastomosis phase (phase 2), the temporalis muscle closure phase (phase 3), and the bone flap closure phase (phase 4). The IMD parameters were compared between patent and non-patent groups, and then compared with the patency on CTA by statistical analyses. IMD with CTA, ICG videoangiography with CTA, IMD with ICG videoangiography were performed to assess bypass patency. The agreement between methods was evaluated using kappa statistics. RESULTS: No significant differences of baseline characteristics were found between patent and non-patent group. Parameters in the STA were different between patent and non-patent groups in phases 2, 3, and 4. In patent group, Vm was apparently higher and PI was lower in phases 2, 3, and 4 compared with phase 1 (P < .001). In non-patent group, no differences of Vm and PI were found within inter-group. The best cutoff value of IMD in the STA to distinguish patent from non-patent bypasses was Vm in phase 4 > 17.5 cm/s (sensitivity 94.2%, specificity 100%). In addition, the agreement for accessing bypass patency was moderate between ICG videoangiography and CTA (kappa = 0.67), IMD and ICG videoangiography (kappa = 0.73), and good between IMD and CTA (kappa = 0.86). CONCLUSION: ICG videoangiography could directly display morphology changes of bypass. IMD could be used for providing half-quantitative parameters to assess bypass patency. Vm in phase 4 > 17.5 cm/s suggesting the patency of bypass on CTA would be good. Also, compared with ICG videoangiography, IMD had more accuracy.

INTRODUCTION: With the development of information technology in medical treatment, mobile medical treatment has become a new way to seek treatment, follow-up, extended care, popular science, disease prevention and access to disease expertise. The application of mobile medical treatment is relatively mature in the management of chronic diseases. Currently, mobile medical intervention is also introduced in the self-management of patients after Renal Transplantation. Compared with traditional intervention methods, mobile medical treatment has the advantages of convenience, speed, low cost and no geographical restriction, and it is easy to be used by KT recipients in self-management and has good feasibility. Therefore, we conducted self-management intervention for patients after Renal Transplantation based on mobile medical procedures, so as to improve patients' satisfaction, medication compliance, follow-up rate, and ease patients' anxiety about the disease. METHODS: A total of 160 discharged patients with stable recovery of transplanted Renal function who underwent renal transplantation surgery in our hospital from January 2021 to January 2023 were selected for retrospective analysis. According to the different intervention plan, the patients were divided into the intervention group and the comparison group, 80 cases each. Among them, the intervention group used the mobile medical application selfmanagement behavior intervention, and the comparison group used the conventional self-management behavior intervention. The differences of self-management behavior score, quality of life score, Basel score and anxiety score between the two groups of patients after Renal Transplantation were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: After intervention, there were statistically significant differences in the scores of self-management behavior scale, Quality of life related rating scale, Basel Assessment scale and Self-rating Anxiety Scale between the intervention group and the control group (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Mobile health intervention tools can provide efficient, comprehensive and accurate remote health intervention and professional support for patients, optimize the medical service system, and meet the social medical needs of high-quality nursing services.  DOI: 10.52547/ijkd.7693.

The great problem of food spoilage is causing food waste worldwide. However, prolonging the shelf life of food and responding to spoilage are good strategies for dealing with this problem. Herein, we present the design of multifunctional chitosan-based hydrogel-incorporated tryptophan carbon quantum dots (Trp-CDs) with antibacterial properties and pH-mediated fluorescence response (pH = 1-13). This chitosan (CS)/tannic acid (TA)/Trp-CDs hydrogel (CTTC hydrogel) was rapidly formed by a high density of hydrogen bonds and has the advantages of good mechanical properties (1628.55 kPa, 280%), washability (5-10 min), antioxidant activity (95.83%), and antibacterial properties. In practical application with fruits, the hydrogel significantly prolonged the shelf life of strawberries by at least 5 days and oranges by 20 days under ambient conditions. In particular, the hydrogel has good pH-mediated fluorescence responsiveness and reversibility due to doping with Trp-CDs, laying a foundation for its application in response to food spoilage.

Soybean in relay intercropping is initially exposed to a shade environment, followed by exposure to full sunlight after the harvesting of primary crops, e.g., maize. Therefore, soybean's ability to acclimate to this changing light environment determines its growth and yield formation. However, the changes in soybean photosynthesis under such light alternations in relay intercropping are poorly understood. This study compared the photosynthetic acclimation of two soybean varieties with contrasting shade tolerance, i.e., Gongxuan1 (shade-tolerant) and C103 (shade-intolerant). The two soybean genotypes were grown in a greenhouse under full sunlight (HL) and 40% full sunlight (LL) conditions. Subsequently, after the fifth compound leaf expanded, half of the LL plants were transferred to a high-sunlight environment (LL-HL). Morphological traits were measured at 0 and 10 days, while chlorophyll content, gas exchange characteristics and chlorophyll fluorescence were assayed at 0, 2, 4, 7 and 10 days after transfer to an HL environment (LL-HL). Shade-intolerant C103 showed photoinhibition 10 days after transfer, and the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) did not completely recover to that under a high light level. On the day of transfer, the shade-intolerant variety, C103, exhibited a decrease in net photosynthetic rate (Pn), stomatal conductance (Gs) and transpiration rate (E) in the low-light (LL) and low-light-to-high-light (LL-HL) treatments. Additionally, intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) increased in low light, suggesting that non-stomatal factors were the primary limitations to photosynthesis in C103 following the transfer. In contrast, the shade-tolerant variety, Gongxuan1, displayed a greater increase in Pn 7 days after transfer, with no difference observed between the HL and LL-HL treatments. Ten days after transfer, the shade-tolerant Gongxuan1 exhibited 24.1%, 10.9% and 20.9% higher biomass, leaf area and stem diameter than the intolerant C103. These findings suggest that Gongxuan1 possesses a higher capacity to adapt to variations in light conditions, making it a potential candidate for variety selection in intercropping systems.

Information regarding relationships between forage yield and soil enzymes of legume-grass mixtures under nitrogen (N) fertilization can guide the decision-making during sustainable forage production. The objective was to evaluate the responses of forage yield, nutritional quality, soil nutrients, and soil enzyme activities of different cropping systems under various N inputs. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), white clover (Trifolium repens L.), orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) were grown in monocultures and mixtures (A1: alfalfa, orchardgrass, and tall fescue; A2: alfalfa, white clover, orchardgrass, and tall fescue) under three N inputs (N1: 150 kg ha-1; N2, 300 kg ha-1; and N3: 450 kg ha-1) in a split plot arrangement. The results highlight that A1 mixture under N2 input had a greater forage yield of 13.88 t ha-1 year-1 than the other N inputs, whereas A2 mixture under N3 input had a greater forage of 14.39 t ha-1 year-1 than N1 input, but it was not substantially greater than N2 input (13.80 t ha-1 year-1). The crude protein (CP) content of grass monocultures and mixtures significantly (P < 0.05) increased with an increase in the rate of N input, and A1 and A2 mixtures under N3 input had a greater CP content of 18.91% and 18.94% dry matter, respectively, than those of grass monocultures under various N inputs. The A1 mixture under N2 and N3 inputs had a substantially greater (P < 0.05) ammonium N content of 16.01 and 16.75 mg kg-1, respectively, whereas A2 mixture under N3 had a greater nitrate N content of 4.20 mg kg-1 than the other cropping systems under various N inputs. The A1 and A2 mixtures under N2 input had a substantial higher (P < 0.05) urease enzyme activity of 0.39 and 0.39 mg g-1 24 h-1 and hydroxylamine oxidoreductase enzyme activity of 0.45 and 0.46 mg g-1 5 h-1, respectively, than the other cropping systems under various N inputs. Taken together, growing legume-grass mixtures under N2 input is cost-effective, sustainable, and eco-friendly, which provide greater forage yield and improved nutritional quality by the better utilization of resources.

Purpose: Thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) may be highly beneficial for thoracoscopic lobectomy patients, but it may increase the risk of hypothermia. Apart from its anesthetic-reducing effects, this randomized controlled trial aimed to investigate the hypothermic effect of TPVB, and thus optimize its clinical use. Patients and methods: Adult patients were randomly allocated to two groups: TPVB + general anesthesia (GA) group or GA group. In the TPVB+GA group, the block was performed after GA induction by an experienced but unrelated anesthesiologist. Both the lower esophageal and axillary temperature were recorded at the beginning of surgery (T0) and every 15 min thereafter (T1-T8), and the end of surgery (Tp). The primary outcome was the lower esophageal temperature at Tp. The secondary outcomes included lower esophageal temperature from T0-T8 and axillary temperature from T0-Tp. The total propofol, analgesics, and norepinephrine consumption and the incidence of adverse events were also recorded. Results: Forty-eight patients were randomly allocated to the TPVB+GA (n=24) and GA (n=24) groups. The core temperature at the end of the surgery was lower in the TPVB+GA group than the GA group (35.90±0.30°C vs 36.35±0.33°C, P<0.001), with a significant difference from 45 min after the surgery began until the end of the surgery (P<0.05). In contrast, the peripheral temperature showed a significant difference at 60 min after the surgery began till the end (P<0.05). TPVB+GA exhibited excellent analgesic and sedative-sparing effects compared to GA alone (P<0.001), though it increased norepinephrine consumption due to hypotension (P<0.001). Conclusion: Although thorough warming strategies were used, TPVB combined with GA remarkably reduced the body temperature, which is an easily neglected side effect. Further studies on the most effective precautions are needed to optimize the clinical use of TPVB.

OBJECT: Cerebral revascularization is an effective measure for dealing with complicated intracranial aneurysms and ischemic cerebro-vascular disease. Intra-operative thrombosis causing bypass occlusion is a severe issue that cause devastating consequences for complication in revascularization. We report our experiences regarding salvage maneuvers for intraoperative thrombosis in cerebral revascularization procedures and discuss the characteristics and culprits. METHODS: We investigated 720 consecutive patients who underwent cerebral revascularization at the First Affiliated Hospital of Soochow University from January 2013 to October 2021, including 688 patients who underwent superficial temporal artery (STA)-middle cerebral artery (MCA) bypass and 32 patients who underwent extracranial artery-radial artery (ECA-RA)-MCA bypass. Forty-one patients experienced intracranial aneurysms, and the remaining 679 patients was involved in moyamoya disease (MMD), skull base tumors, intracranial occlusive vascular diseases, or other cerebrovascular diseases. All clinical characteristics, clinical imaging examinations and neurological outcomes were studied pre- and postoperatively. The patency of bypasses was confirmed by intraoperative doppler ultrasonography and indocyanine green (ICG) videoangiography. RESULTS: Seven intraoperative thromboses, which were confirmed by intraoperative doppler ultrasonography and ICG videoangiography, including STA-MCA bypass (n=5) and ECA-RA-MCA bypass (n=2), were observed in 720 patients who underwent cerebral revascularization. The anastomotic stoma remained patent in 6 of 7 patients with intraoperative thrombosis after treatment. One case in STA-MCA bypass failed to be salvaged. Of the four intraoperative thrombosis in STA-MCA bypass for MMD being successfully saved, two were salvaged by applying gelfoam around the site of the anastomosis to relieve the downward compression effect of the donor vessel(STA) on the recipient vessel(M4 segment of MCA).One case in ECA-RA-MCA bypass were salvaged by thrombectomy through donor arteriotomy (radial artery) and reanastomosis. The other case was salvaged by complete reanastomosis. All seven patients who experienced intraoperative thrombosis achieved favorable outcomes at discharge and the 6-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: Various factors are responsible for intraoperative thrombosis in cerebral revascularization. Relieving the downward compression effect of the donor vessel STA on the recipient vessel M4 segment of MCA by applying gelfoam around the site of the anastomosis stoma, can be recommend to salvage the intraoperative thrombosis in cerebral revascularization.

Food safety is connected to public health, making it crucial to protecting people's health. Food analysis and detection can assure food quality and effectively reduce the entry of harmful foods into the market. Carbon dots (CDs) are an excellent choice for food analysis and detection attributable to their advantages of good optical properties, water solubility, high chemical stability, easy functionalization, excellent bleaching resistance, low toxicity, and good biocompatibility. This paper focuses on the optical properties, synthesis methods, and applications of CDs in food analysis and detection, including the recent advances in food nutritional composition analysis and food quality detection, such as food additives, heavy metal ions, foodborne pathogens, harmful organic pollutants, and pH value. Moreover, this review also discusses the potentially toxic effects, current challenges, and prospects of CDs in basic research and applications. We hope that this review can provide valuable information to lay a foundation for subsequent research on CDs and promote the exploration of CDs-based sensing for future food detection.

To better evaluate the effects of Acremonium cellulase (AC) and previously screened heat-resistant Lactobacillus plantarum 149 (LP149) on lignocellulose degradation, fermentation quality, and microbial community during ensiling in humid and hot areas, this study used a small-scale fermentation system to prepare hybrid elephant grass silage at 30 and 45°C, respectively. Compared to control and commercial inoculant Lactobacillus plantarum (LP), the addition of AC or strain LP149 decreased the contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and cellulose and increased the contents of glucose, fructose, and sucrose during fermentation. Furthermore, AC and LP149 treatments altered the microbial communities' structure during ensiling. AC treatment provided more substrate for microbial fermentation, resulting in an increase in bacterial alpha diversity. LP149 treatment increased the Lactobacillus abundance and optimized the bacterial community compositions. In addition, AC and LP149 treatments had higher (P < 0.05) lactic acid and acetic acid contents and lower (P < 0.05) pH, butyric acid, and NH3-N levels compared to the control. These results indicated that AC and strain LP149 are promising silage additives that can promote lignocellulose degradation and improve the fermentation quality of hybrid elephant grass in humid and hot areas.

Soybean (Glycine max) is a legume species that is widely used in intercropping. Quantitative analyses of plasticity and genetic differences in soybean would improve the selection and breeding of soybean in intercropping. Here, we used data of 20 varieties from one year artificial shading experiment and one year intercropping experiment to characterize the morphological and physiological traits of soybean seedlings grown under shade and full sun light conditions. Our results showed that shade significantly decreased biomass, leaf area, stem diameter, fraction of dry mass in petiole, leaf mass per unit area, chlorophyll a/b ratio, net photosynthetic rate per unit area at PAR of 500 µmol m-2 s-1 and 1,200 µmol m-2 s-1 of soybean seedling, but significantly increased plant height, fraction of dry mass in stem and chlorophyll content. Light × variety interaction was significant for all measured traits, light effect contributed more than variety effect. The biomass of soybean seedlings was positively correlated with leaf area and stem diameter under both shade and full sunlight conditions, but not correlated with plant height and net photosynthetic rate. The top five (62.75% variation explained) most important explanatory variables of plasticity of biomass were that the plasticity of leaf area, leaf area ratio, leaflet area, plant height and chlorophyll content, whose total weight were 1, 0.9, 0.3, 0.2, 0.19, respectively. The plasticity of biomass was positively correlated with plasticity of leaf area and leaflet area but significant negative correlated with plasticity of plant height. The principal component one account for 42.45% variation explain. A cluster analysis further indicated that soybean cultivars were classified into three groups and cultivars; Jiandebaimaodou, Gongdou 2, and Guixia 3 with the maximum plasticity of biomass. These results suggest that for soybean seedlings grown under shade increasing the capacity for light interception by larger leaf area is more vital than light searching (plant height) and light conversion (photosynthetic rate).

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of immunoglobulin Y (IgY)-loaded amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) (IgY@ACP) on dentinal tubule occlusion and antibacterial activity. Methodology: IgY@ACP was synthesized based on a biomimetic mineralization strategy. The structure was examined by transmission electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The IgY release property was assessed in vitro. The cell biocompatibility of IgY@ACP was evaluated by CCK-8. The dentin disks were prepared using healthy human molars, and their dentinal tubules were exposed to EDTA. Subsequently, they were randomly selected and treated with or without IgY@ACP for 7 days. The tubule occlusion morphologies and newly formed layers were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and x-ray diffraction, respectively. To evaluate the acid resistance and abrasion resistance of IgY@ACP, dentin disks that were treated for 1 day were immersed in acid solution or subjected to a toothbrush. The antibacterial effects against Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) were evaluated by colony-forming unit (CFU) counting, adhesion property assessment, and crystal violet and live/dead bacterial staining. Finally, the occlusion effect was evaluated in rat incisors in vivo. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed for statistical analysis. The level of significance was set at 0.05. Results: IgY@ACP presented an amorphous phase with a nanosize (60-80 nm) and sustained release of protein within 48 h. The CCK-8 results showed that IgY@ACP had good biocompatibility. After treatment with IgY@ACP for 1 day, the majority of dentinal tubules were occluded by a 0.3-µm-thick mineralized layer. Seven days later, all dentinal tubules were occluded by mineralization with a thickness of 1.4 µm and a depth of 16 µm. The newly mineralized layer showed hydroxyapatite-like diffraction peaks. In addition, IgY@ACP had good acid and abrasion resistance. After treatment with IgY@ACP, the CFU counting and adhesion rate of S. mutans were significantly reduced, the crystal violet staining was lighter, and the S. mutans staining revealed more dead cells. Most importantly, IgY@ACP had a certain occluding property in rat incisors in vivo. Conclusion: IgY@ACP can effectively occlude dentinal tubules with acid-resistant stability and has prominent anti-S. mutans effects, rendering it a potentially suitable desensitization material in the clinic.

Objective: Extracranial vertebral artery dissection (EVAD) is one of the main causes of stroke in young and middle-aged patients. However, the diagnosis is challenging. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of EVAD on color duplex ultrasonography (CDU) and high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (hrMRI), hoping to improve the accuracy and determine the relative contribution of vessel findings and clinical factors to acute ischemic events. Methods: Patients with unilateral EVAD were recruited and divided into ischemia and non-ischemia groups. Clinical features of patients and the lesion location; a variety of signs which indicate dissection, including the presence of an intimal flap, double lumen, intramural hematoma, dissecting aneurysm, intraluminal thrombus, and irregular lumen; and other quantitative parameters of each dissected segment on CDU and hrMRI were reviewed, respectively. Multiple logistic regression was performed to explore the association between clinical, imaging characteristics, and ischemic events in patients with unilateral EVAD. Results: Ninety-six patients with unilateral EVAD who met the inclusion criteria were enrolled during a six-year period. Overall, 41 cases (42.7%) were confirmed as ischemic stroke (n = 40) or transient ischemic attack (n = 1) during the 48 h after the onset of symptoms. Men, infections during the last week, and smoking were more common in the ischemia group. Intraluminal thrombus and occlusion on CDU were more prevalent in patients with cerebral ischemia than in those without (36.6 vs. 5.5%; p < 0.001, and 39.0 vs. 9.1%; p = 0.001, respectively). On hrMRI, intraluminal thrombus and occlusion were also more frequent in the ischemia group than in the non-ischemia group (34.1 vs. 5.5%; p < 0.001, and 34.1 vs. 9.1%; p = 0.003, respectively). In addition, lesion length on hrMRI was significantly longer for patients with ischemia (81.5 ± 41.7 vs. 64.7 ± 30.8 mm; p = 0.025). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, male gender, infections during the last week, and the presence of intraluminal thrombus on CDU and hrMRI were independently associated with acute ischemic events. Conclusion: Male sex, infections during the last week, and the presence of intraluminal thrombus due to dissection are associated with an increased risk of ischemic events in patients with unilateral EVAD.

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.), although a kind of high-quality and high-yield forage, could hardly achieve a great quality of silage because of its high buffering capacity. Mixed silage of faba bean with forage wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) or oat (Avena sativa L.) at different ratios could improve the fermentation quality and bacterial community. Compared with 100% faba bean silage (BS), mixed silage improved the fermentation quality, not only increased lactic acid production and reduced pH, but reduced the production of propionic acid and ammonia nitrogen. The chemical compositions of faba bean with forage wheat (BT) mixed silage were better than that of faba bean with oat (BO) mixed silage, and that of 3:7, 5:5 (fresh matter basis) mixing ratios were better than 1:9. However, the fermentation quality of BO mixed silage was better than that of BT, and that of 3:7 mixed silage (BO30) was the best overall. Analysis of the bacterial community showed that mixed silage increased the relative abundance of lactic acid bacteria after ensiling, and the relatively higher abundance of Lactobacillus showed the inhibitory effects on the proliferation of Serratia and Hafnia_Obesumbacterium, so that it alleviated their negative effects on silage and stabilized the fermentation quality. This present study exhibited that mixed silage of faba bean with forage wheat or oat not only had significant effects on chemical compositions and fermentation quality of materials but modified bacterial community so that improved the fermentation quality effectively. The mixed silage of 30% faba bean with 70% oat (BO30) is recommended in the faba bean mixed silage.
