Introduction: The ratio of lysine (Lys) to methionine (Met) with 3.0: 1 is confirmed as the "ideal" profile for milk protein synthesis, but whether this ratio is suitable for milk protein synthesis under HS needs to be further studied. Methods: To evaluate the molecular mechanism by which HS and Lys to Met ratios affect mammary cell functional capacity, an immortalized bovine mammary epithelial cell line (MAC-T) is incubated with 5 doses of Met while maintaining a constant concentration of Lys. The MAC-T cells was treated for 6 h as follow: Lys: Met 3.0: 1 (control 37°C and IPAA 42°C) or treatments under HS (42°C) with different ratios of Lys: Met at 2.0: 1 (LM20), 2.5: 1 (LM25), 3.5: 1 (LM35) and 4.0: 1 (LM40). RNA sequencing was used to assess transcriptome-wide alterations in mRNA abundance. Results: The significant difference between control and other groups was observed base on PCA analysis. A total of 2048 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the IPAA group relative to the control group. Similarly, 226, 306, 148, 157 DEGs were detected in the LM20, LM25, LM35 and LM40 groups, respectively, relative to the IPAA group. The relative mRNA abundance of HSPA1A was upregulated and anti-apoptotic genes (BCL2L1 and BCL2) was down-regulated in the IPAA group, compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Compared with the IPAA group, the relative mRNA abundance of anti-apoptotic genes and casein genes (CSN1S2 and CSN2) was up-regulated in the LM25 group (p < 0.05). The DEGs between LM25 and IPAA groups were associated with the negative regulation of transcription RNA polymerase II promoter in response to stress (GO: 0051085, DEGs of BAG3, DNAJB1, HSPA1A) as well as the mTOR signaling pathway (ko04150, DEGs of ATP6V1C2, WNT11, WNT3A, and WNT9A). Several DEGs involved in amino acids metabolism (AFMID, HYKK, NOS3, RIMKLB) and glycolysis/gluconeogenesis (AFMID and MGAT5B) were up-regulated while DEGs involved in lipolysis and beta-oxidation catabolic processes (ALOX12 and ALOX12B) were down-regulated. Conclusion: These results suggested that increasing Met supply (Lys: Met at 2.5: 1) may help mammary gland cells resist HS-induced cell damage, while possibly maintaining lactation capacity through regulation of gene expression.

Purpose: The objective of this study was to investigate latent classes of oral health and the factors associated with them in acutely admitted elderly inpatients. Patients and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using purposive sampling to survey Chinese older-adult acutely inpatients. Data was collected utilizing several instruments, including a general information questionnaire, Brief Oral Health Status Examination (BOHSE), Oral Frailty Index-8 (OFI-8), Mini-Nutritional Assessment Short Form (MNA-SF), and Frailty Screening Questionnaire (FSQ). Latent class analysis was applied to identify distinct categories of oral health among elderly inpatients, and multinomial logistic regression was employed to analyze the factors associated with different oral health categories. Results: In this study, a total of 504 elderly patients were ultimately included, leading to the identification of three latent classes of oral health: "oral health-low level group (41.27%)", "oral health-moderate level group (25.4%)", and "oral health-high level group (33.33%)". The findings revealed that patients with advanced age, elevated neutrophil percentage, and higher C-reactive protein (CRP) values were more likely to be classified in the low oral health group. Additionally, individuals experiencing malnutrition and frailty had a higher risk of falling into the low oral health category. Those with comorbidities and oral frailty were more prevalent in the moderate oral health group. At the same time, elderly patients with higher BMI (22.95±3.043) ratios were more likely to be categorized in the high oral health group. Conclusion: This study sheds light on three distinct latent classes of oral health among acutely admitted elderly inpatients. These findings underscore the importance of healthcare professionals focusing on the assessment and health education of elderly patients' oral health. Furthermore, personalized interventions should be developed to promote healthy aging, with particularly attention to enhancing oral health outcomes in this population.

Gastrointestinal symptoms constitute a frequent complication in postoperative patients with valvular heart disease (VHD), impacting their postoperative recovery. Probiotics contribute to regulating human gut microbiota balance and alleviating postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms. Our objective involved assessing the potential of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis LPL-RH to alleviate postoperative gastrointestinal symptoms and expedite patient recovery. Adult patients diagnosed with VHD scheduled for valve surgery were enrolled. 110 patients were randomly divided into two groups and received LPL-RH or a placebo for 14 days. Gastrointestinal symptoms were evaluated using the Gastrointestinal Symptoms Questionnaire. An analysis of the time to recovery of bowel function and various postoperative variables was conducted in both study groups. Variations in the intestinal microbiota were detected via 16S rRNA sequencing. The study was completed by 105 participants, with 53 in the probiotic group and 52 in the placebo group. Compared to the placebo group, LPL-RH significantly reduced the total gastrointestinal symptom score after surgery (p = 0.004). Additionally, LPL-RH was found to significantly reduce abdominal pain (p = 0.001), bloating (p = 0.018), and constipation (p = 0.022) symptom scores. Furthermore, LPL-RH dramatically shortened the time to recovery of bowel function (p = 0.017). Moreover, LPL-RH administration significantly enhanced patients' postoperative nutrition indexes (red blood cell counts, hemoglobin level, p < 0.05). Microbiome analysis showed that the composition and diversity of the postoperative intestinal microbiota differed between the probiotic and placebo groups. No adverse incidents associated with probiotics were documented, emphasizing their safety. This study initially discovered that oral B. animalis subsp. lactis LPL-RH can assist in regulating intestinal microbiota balance, alleviating gastrointestinal symptoms, promoting intestinal function recovery, and enhancing nutrition indexes in patients with VHD after surgery. Regulating the intestinal microbiota may represent a potential mechanism for LPL-RH to exert clinical benefits.

Objective: To explore the symptom experiences and influencing factors of gastrointestinal (GI) cancer patients on chemotherapy (CTX) in China. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 13 GI cancer patients undergoing CTX. Following the Colaizzi 7-step analysis method, the interview data were read carefully, meaningful statements related to the research questions were extracted, coded, collected, and described in detail, and the authenticity of the theme was verified. Results: Nine themes were grouped into two main areas including the characteristics of symptom experiences and influences on symptom experiences. Conclusion: The symptom experiences of patients undergoing CTX for GI cancer is poor and influenced by multiple factors. Nurses need to pay attention to the assessment and monitoring of CTX-related symptoms, improve symptom recognition, enhance doctor-patient communication and social support, explore intelligent management methods, and increase the efficiency of healthcare services to improve patients' symptom experience.

OBJECTIVE: Systematic evaluation of the safety of del Nido cardioplegia compared to cold blood cardioplegia in adult cardiac surgery. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, EMbase, The Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov for randomized clinical trials (published by 14 January 2024) comparing del Nido cardioplegia to cold blood cardioplegia in adult. Our main endpoints were myocardial injury markers and clinical outcomes. We assessed pooled data by use of a random-effects model or a fixed-effects model. RESULTS: A total of 10 studies were identified, incorporating 889 patients who received del Nido cardioplegia and 907 patients who received cold blood cardioplegia. The meta-analysis results showed that compared with the cold blood cardioplegia, the del Nido cardioplegia had less volume of cardioplegia, higher rate of spontaneous rhythm recovery after cross clamp release, lower levels of postoperative cardiac troponin T and creatinine kinase-myocardial band, all of which were statistically significant. However, there was no statistically significant difference in postoperative troponin I and postoperative left ventricular ejection fraction. The clinical outcomes including mechanical ventilation time, intensive care unit stay time, hospital stay time, postoperative stroke, postoperative new-onset atrial fibrillation, postoperative heart failure requiring intra-aortic balloon pump mechanical circulation support, and in-hospital mortality of both are comparable. CONCLUSION: Existing evidence suggests that del Nido cardioplegia reduced volume of cardioplegia administration and attempts of defibrillation. The superior postoperative results in CTnT and CK-MB may provide a direction for further research on improvement of the composition of cardioplegia.

Cupressaceae is a conifer family rich in plants of horticultural importance, including Cupressus, Chamaecyparis, Juniperus, and Thuja, yet genomic surveys are lacking for this family. Cupressus gigantea, one of the many rare conifers that are threatened by climate change and anthropogenic habitat fragmentation, plays an ever-increasing role in ecotourism in Tibet. To infer how past climate change has shaped the population evolution of this species, we generated a de novo chromosome-scale genome (10.92 Gb) and compared the species' population history and genetic load with that of a widespread close relative, C. duclouxiana. Our demographic analyses, based on 83 re-sequenced individuals from multiple populations of the two species, revealed a sharp decline of population sizes during the first part of the Quaternary. However, populations of C. duclouxiana then started to recover, while C. gigantea populations continued to decrease until recently. The total genomic diversity of C. gigantea is smaller than that of C. duclouxiana, but contrary to expectations, C. gigantea has fewer highly and mildly deleterious mutations than C. duclouxiana, and simulations and statistical tests support purifying selection during prolonged inbreeding as the explanation. Our results highlight the evolutionary consequences of decreased population size on the genetic burden of a long-lived endangered conifer with large genome size and suggest that genetic purging deserves more attention in conservation management.

Metastasis poses a huge obstacle to the survival of breast cancer patients. The microRNA miR-1205 acts as a tumor suppressor in various cancers, but its roles in breast cancer and metastasis remain unclear. To elucidate its function in breast cancer progression, we analyzed miR-1205 expression in human tumor samples and carried out a series of functional studies in in vitro and in vivo. miR-1205 was expressed more highly in metastatic breast tumor samples than in non-metastatic samples and was associated with lymph node metastasis, clinical stage, and poor prognosis. Moreover, miR-1205 promoted breast cancer cell invasiveness in vitro and metastasis in mice by directly targeting CDK3 and reducing CDK3 protein levels. We also showed that CDK3 interacts with Snail protein, inducing Snail degradation via the ubiquitin-proteasome system and potentially affecting epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition. Furthermore, analysis of clinical tissue samples indicated that CDK3 and miR-1205 levels were inversely correlated in lymph node metastasis-positive primary tumors. This study demonstrated the pro-metastatic role of miR-1205 in breast cancer, mediated via a novel miR-1205/CDK3/Snail axis. Moreover, we identified miR-1205 and CDK3 as potential markers of invasion and progression in breast cancer.

How brain functions in the distorted ischemic state before and after reperfusion is unclear. It is also uncertain whether there are any indicators within ischemic brain that could predict surgical outcomes. To alleviate these issues, we applied individual brain connectome in chronic steno-occlusive vasculopathy (CSOV) to map both ischemic symptoms and their postbypass changes. A total of 499 bypasses in 455 CSOV patients were collected and followed up for 47.8 ± 20.5 months. Using multimodal parcellation with connectivity-based and pathological distortion-independent approach, areal MR features of brain connectome were generated with three measurements of functional connectivity (FC), structural connectivity, and PageRank centrality at the single-subject level. Thirty-three machine-learning models were then trained with clinical and areal MR features to obtain acceptable classifiers for both ischemic symptoms and their postbypass changes, among which, 11 were deemed acceptable (AUC > 0.7). Notably, the FC feature-based model for long-term neurological outcomes performed very well (AUC > 0.8). Finally, a Shapley additive explanations plot was adopted to extract important individual features in acceptable models to generate "fingerprints" of brain connectome. This study not only establishes brain connectomic fingerprint databases for brain ischemia with distortion, but also provides informative insights for how brain functions before and after reperfusion.

Pertechnetate (99TcO4-), a physiologically toxic radioactive anion, is of great concern due to its high mobility in environmental contamination remediation. Although the soluble oxyanion can be photoreduced to sparingly soluble TcO2·nH2O, its effective removal from a strongly acidic aqueous solution remains a challenge. Here, we found that low-crystalline nitrogen-doped titanium oxide (N-TiO2, 0.6 g L-1) could effectively uptake perrhenate (ReO4-, 10 mg L-1, a nonradioactive surrogate for TcO4-) with 50.8% during 360 min under simulated sunlight irradiation at pH 1.0, but P25 and anatase could not. The nitrogen active center formed by trace nitrogen doping in N-TiO2 can promote the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers. The positive valence band value of N-TiO2 is slightly higher than those of P25 and anatase, which means that the photogenerated holes have a stronger oxidizability. These holes are involved in the formation of strong reducing •CO2- radicals from formic acid oxidation. The active radicals convert ReO4- to Re(VI), which is subsequently disproportionated to Re(IV) and Re(VII). Effective photocatalytic reduction/removal of Re(VII)/Tc(VII) is performed on the material, which may be considered a potential and convenient strategy for technetium decontamination and extraction in a strongly acidic aqueous solution.

In this study, a denitrification biofilter coupled with water electrolysis (DNBF-WE) was developed as a novel heterotrophic-hydrogen autotrophic denitrification system, which could enhance denitrification with limited organic carbon in the secondary effluent. The volumetric denitrification rate of DNBF-WE reached 152.16 g N m-3 d-1 (C/N = 2, I = 60 mA, and HRT = 5 h). Besides, the vertical spatial denitrification of DNBF-WE was explored, with the nitrate removal rate being 49.5%, 16.3%, and 29.3% in the top, middle, and bottom, respectively. The concentration of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) was consistent with the denitrification performance vertically. The high-throughput sequencing analysis results revealed that autotrophic denitrification bacteria (e.g. Thauera) gradually enriched along DNBF-WE from top to bottom. The functional gene prediction results illustrated the vertical stratification mechanisms of the denitrification. Both dissimilatory nitrate reduction and denitrification contributed to nitrate removal, and denitrification became more advantageous with an increase in the filter depth. The research on both the performance of DNBF-WE and the characteristics of microbial communities in the vertical zones of the biofilter may lay a foundation for the biofilter denitrification process in practice.

A high concentration of sodium (Na+) is the primary stressor for plants in high salinity environments. The Salt Overly Sensitive (SOS) pathway is one of the best-studied signal transduction pathways, which confers plants the ability to export too much Na+ out of the cells or translocate the cytoplasmic Na+ into the vacuole. In this study, the Salt Overly Sensitive3 (MpSOS3) gene from Pongamia (Millettia pinnata Syn. Pongamia pinnata), a semi-mangrove, was isolated and characterized. The MpSOS3 protein has canonical EF-hand motifs conserved in other calcium-binding proteins and an N-myristoylation signature sequence. The MpSOS3 gene was significantly induced by salt stress, especially in Pongamia roots. Expression of the wild-type MpSOS3 but not the mutated nonmyristoylated MpSOS3-G2A could rescue the salt-hypersensitive phenotype of the Arabidopsis sos3-1 mutant, which suggested the N-myristoylation signature sequence of MpSOS3 was required for MpSOS3 function in plant salt tolerance. Heterologous expression of MpSOS3 in Arabidopsis accumulated less H2O2, superoxide anion radical (O2-), and malondialdehyde (MDA) than wild-type plants, which enhanced the salt tolerance of transgenic Arabidopsis plants. Under salt stress, MpSOS3 transgenic plants accumulated a lower content of Na+ and a higher content of K+ than wild-type plants, which maintained a better K+/Na+ ratio in transgenic plants. Moreover, no development and growth discrepancies were observed in the MpSOS3 heterologous overexpression plants compared to wild-type plants. Our results demonstrated that the MpSOS3 pathway confers a conservative salt-tolerant role and provided a foundation for further study of the SOS pathway in Pongamia.

Pongamia (Millettia pinnata Syn. Pongamia pinnata), a mangrove associate plant, exhibits good stress tolerance, making it a treasure of genetic resources for crop improvement. NAC proteins are plant-specific transcription factors, which have been elucidated to participate in the regulation and tolerance of abiotic stresses (such as salt and drought). Here, we identified a salt-induced gene from Pongamia, MpNAC1, which encodes an NAC factor sharing five highly conserved domains with other NACs and exhibits close homology to AtNAC19/AtNAC55/AtNAC72 in Arabidopsis. MpNAC1 showed nuclear localization and transcriptional activator activity. MpNAC1-overexpressing Arabidopsis exhibited significantly stronger salt and drought tolerance compared with wild-type plants. The expression levels of stress-responsive genes were activated in transgenic Arabidopsis. Furthermore, the heterologous expression of MpNAC1 also enhanced the salt and drought tolerance of transgenic rice. The major agronomic traits, such as plant height and tiller number, panicle length, grain size, and yield, were similar between the transgenic lines and wild type under normal field growth conditions. RNA-Seq analysis revealed that MpNAC1 significantly up-regulated stress-responsive genes and activated the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, resulting in increased stress tolerance. Taken together, the MpNAC1 increased salt and drought stress tolerance in transgenic plants and did not retard the plant growth and development under normal growth conditions, suggesting the potential of MpNAC1 in breeding stress-resilient crops.

Background: Reduced work readiness is associated with elevated turnover rates, necessitating efforts to enhance the positive work readiness of newly graduated nurses to alleviate the shortage in the nursing workforce. Research into the work readiness of recent nursing graduates in China is still in its infancy. Most studies employ quantitative research methods, and further exploration of the self-perception of work readiness among new nurses in China is required. Objectives: This study aimed to investigate genuine experiences and self-perceptions of work readiness among new graduate nurses. Design: A qualitative descriptive study. Methods: Sixteen new nurses from a provincial tertiary hospital in China were included in this study, which adhered to the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ) checklist for reporting. The data collection process involved conducting semi-structured interviews from September to October 2021. Inductive content analysis was employed to analyze the interview data. Results: The study identified four themes encompassing new nurses' real-life experiences and self-perceptions of work readiness: psychological stress, emotional conflict, empathy fatigue, and ethical dilemmas. Psychological stress comprised three subthemes: knowledge and skill deficits, communication barriers, and fear. Empathy fatigue was primarily characterized by psychological and physical symptoms. Ethical dilemmas involved conflicts over differences in values and between clinical reality and standardized nursing practice. Conclusion: Drawing from the self-perceptions of work readiness among new nurses found in this study, nursing administrators and educators must enhance the existing transition support program for new nurses. Additionally, the establishment of individualized training programs is recommended to further improve the work readiness of new nurses.

Rotavirus is one of the pathogenic causes that induce diarrhea in young animals, especially piglets, worldwide. However, nowadays, there is no specific drug available to treat the disease, and the related vaccines have no obvious efficiency in some countries. Via analyzing the pathogenesis of rotavirus, it inducing diarrhea is mainly due to disturb enteric nervous system, destroy gut mucosal integrity, induce intracellular electrolyte imbalance, and impair gut microbiota and immunity. Many studies have already proved that prebiotics and probiotics can mitigate the damage and diarrhea induced by rotavirus infection in hosts. Based on these, the current review summarizes and discusses the effects and mechanisms of prebiotics and probiotics on rotavirus-induced diarrhea in piglets. This information will highlight the basis for the swine production utilization of prebiotics and probiotics in the prevention or treatment of rotavirus infection in the future.

OBJECTIVES: Prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) is a common complication following cardiac surgery linked to unfavorable patient prognosis and increased mortality. This study aimed to search for the factors associated with the occurrence of PMV after valve surgery and to develop a risk prediction model. METHODS: The patient cohort was divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of PMV post-surgery. Comprehensive preoperative and intraoperative clinical data were collected. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify risk factors contributing to the incidence of PMV. Based on the logistic regression results, a clinical nomogram was developed. RESULTS: The study included 550 patients who underwent valve surgery, among whom 62 (11.27%) developed PMV. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age (odds ratio [OR] = 1.082, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.042-1.125; P < 0.000), current smokers (OR = 1.953, 95% CI = 1.007-3.787; P = 0.047), left atrial internal diameter index (OR = 1.04, 95% CI = 1.002-1.081; P = 0.041), red blood cell count (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = 0.275-0.876; P = 0.016), and aortic clamping time (OR = 1.031, 95% CI = 1.005-1.057; P < 0.017) independently influenced the occurrence of PMV. A nomogram was constructed based on these factors. In addition, a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was plotted, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.782 and an accuracy of 0.884. CONCLUSION: Age, current smokers, left atrial diameter index, red blood cell count, and aortic clamping time are independent risk factors for PMV in patients undergoing valve surgery. Furthermore, the nomogram based on these factors demonstrates the potential for predicting the risk of PMV in patients following valve surgery.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology is currently a cutting-edge exploratory problem in the field of human-computer interaction. However, in experiments involving the implantation of electrodes into brain tissue, particularly high-speed or array implants, existing technologies find it challenging to observe the damage in real time. Considering the difficulties in obtaining biological brain tissue and the challenges associated with real-time observation of damage during the implantation process, we have prepared a transparent agarose gel that closely mimics the mechanical properties of biological brain tissue for use in electrode implantation experiments. Subsequently, we developed an experimental setup for synchronized observation of the electrode implantation process, utilizing the Digital Gradient Sensing (DGS) method. In the single electrode implantation experiments, with the increase in implantation speed, the implantation load increases progressively, and the tissue damage region around the electrode tip gradually diminishes. In the array electrode implantation experiments, compared to a single electrode, the degree of tissue indentation is more severe due to the coupling effect between adjacent electrodes. As the array spacing increases, the coupling effect gradually diminishes. The experimental results indicate that appropriately increasing the velocity and array spacing of the electrodes can enhance the likelihood of successful implantation. The research findings of this article provide valuable guidance for the damage assessment and selection of implantation parameters during the process of electrode implantation into real brain tissue.

OBJECTIVES: Observational studies suggested a potential correlation between dietary intake and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), but conflicting findings exist and causality remains unclear. Here, we performed a Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to evaluate the causal impact of relative intake of (i) carbohydrate, (ii) fat, and (iii) protein on ALS risk. METHODS: The genome-wide association summary statistics of three dietary macronutrient intake traits and ALS were obtained. Initially, forward and reverse univariable MR (UVMR) analysis were conducted using the inverse variance weighted (IVW) method as the primary approach, supplemented by MR-Egger, weighted median, and maximum likelihood. Subsequently, multivariable MR (MVMR) analysis was performed to assess the independent causal effects of each dietary. Additionally, diverse sensitivity tests were conducted to evaluate the reliability of the MR analyses. RESULTS: The forward UVMR analysis conducted by IVW indicated that relative carbohydrate intake significantly increased ALS risk. Furthermore, results from three other MR methods paralleled those from IVW. However, the other two dietary intake traits did not have a causative impact on ALS risk. The reverse UVMR analysis indicated that ALS did not causatively influence the three dietary intake traits. The MVMR analysis showed that after adjusting for the effects of the other two dietary intake traits, relative carbohydrate intake independently and significantly increased ALS risk. Sensitivity tests indicated no significant heterogeneity or horizontal pleiotropy. DISCUSSION: MR analysis supported relative carbohydrate independently increasing ALS risk. Biogeographical barriers to gene flow are central to plant phylogeography. In East Asia, plant distribution is greatly influenced by two phylogeographic breaks, the Mekong-Salween Divide and Tanaka-Kaiyong Line, however, few studies have investigated how these barriers affect the genetic diversity of species that are distributed across both. Here we used 14 microsatellite loci and four chloroplast DNA fragments to examine genetic diversity and distribution patterns of 49 populations of Populus rotundifolia, a species that spans both the Mekong-Salween Divide and the Tanaka-Kaiyong Line in southwestern China. Demographic and migration hypotheses were tested using coalescent-based approaches. Limited historical gene flow was observed between the western and eastern groups of P. rotundifolia, but substantial flow occurred across both the Mekong-Salween Divide and Tanaka-Kaiyong Line, manifesting in clear admixture and high genetic diversity in the central group. Wind-borne pollen and seeds may have facilitated the dispersal of P. rotundifolia following prevalent northwest winds in the spring. We also found that the Hengduan Mountains, where multiple genetic barriers were detected, acted on the whole as a barrier between the western and eastern groups of P. rotundifolia. Ecological niche modeling suggested that P. rotundifolia has undergone range expansion since the last glacial maximum, and demographic reconstruction indicated an earlier population expansion around 600 Ka. The phylogeographic pattern of P. rotundifolia reflects the interplay of biological traits, wind patterns, barriers, niche differentiation, and Quaternary climate history. This study emphasizes the need for multiple lines of evidence in understanding the Quaternary evolution of plants in topographically complex areas.
