RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the mediating role of depressive symptoms in the relationship between negative life events (NLEs) and suicidality, as well as to test the moderating effect of self-esteem in the mediation model. METHODS: A total of 3,003 adolescents from Han, Tibetan, and Yi ethnic groups living in Western China were included in this study. Utilizing the structural equation model, a mediation model and a moderated mediation model were constructed. RESULTS: The presence of NLEs was positively associated with suicidality (ß = 0.17, p < 0.001). Depressive symptoms partially mediated the relationship between NLEs and suicidality (indirect effect ß = 0.19, p < 0.001). Self-esteem moderated both the antecedent and subsequent segments of the mediating paths of "NLEs → depressive symptoms → suicidality" and the direct relationship between NLEs and suicidality. Among adolescents with a low level of self-esteem, the mediating effect coefficient of depressive symptoms was higher at 0.18 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.14-0.23), in contrast to adolescents with a high level of self-esteem, where the mediating effect coefficient of depressive symptoms was 0.04 (95% CI: 0.02-0.07). CONCLUSION: NLEs are directly associated with an increased risk of suicidality and indirectly related to suicidality by increasing the risk of depressive symptoms among adolescents. Self-esteem can moderate the mediating effect of depressive symptoms and the relationship between NLEs and suicidality. The intervention strategy for preventing suicidality among adolescents who have experienced NLEs should focus on reducing depressive symptoms and improving self-esteem.

RESUMEN

China's coastal region is the major geographical unit for the future development of China's industrial sector. The transformation of basic structure to high-class development in China's coastal places is a significant tool for promoting the changes related to quality, power and efficiency in regional economic development. In the 21st century, environmental and energy issues have increased worldwide, and challenges related to environmental pollution, energy crises, and ecological imbalances have emerged. To climate change and energy utilization, the sustainable progress of clean energy is the new route of future energy development. Based on China's non-polluting energy growth process in the last ten years, this article explores China's clean/green energy policies and economic growth development plans. Clean energy utilization is crucial for sustainable development in the context of high-quality economic growth and climate change. However, the monetary evolution and carbon emission are not investigated whole from the clean energy aspects. Using Wind energy sources as the acceptable variable, this paper employs threshold regression and impulse functions to assess the energy consumption and economic growth on carbon emission in 30 Chinese provinces over the 2000 to 2020 period. The Deep Belief Network (DBN) model predicts wind energy utilization and efficiency. The results show that economic development and carbon emissions are connected. Further, growth influences promote the offset of carbon emissions. Green innovation alters the nexus of carbon emissions, and China's economy reduces carbon usage. It provides the decision-making policies for clean energy development.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Rural left-behind adolescents are more vulnerable to Internet addiction and depressive and anxious symptoms due to the lack of family support and parental supervision. This study was the first to investigate the longitudinal relationships between Internet addiction and depressive and anxious symptoms and to examine the mediating roles of resilience and friendship quality in rural left-behind adolescents. METHODS: Included in this study, which was from a longitudinal study conducted five times over 2 years, were 1001 rural left-behind adolescents. The internationally used scales for depressive and anxious symptoms, Internet addiction, resilience and friendship quality were administered. A structural equation model was used for analysis. RESULTS: The prevalence of Internet addiction, depressive and anxious symptoms among rural left-behind adolescents were 17.7%, 35.8% and 27.6%, respectively. Internet addiction predicted the later depressive and anxious symptoms (ß = 0.200, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.116-0.274 and ß = 0.263, 95% CI: 0.188-0.330). Resilience acted as an independent mediator in the relationships between Internet addiction and depressive and anxious symptoms (ß = 0.037 and 0.034, P < 0.01). Resilience and friendship quality played a chain-mediating role on the longitudinal relationships between Internet addiction and depressive and anxious symptoms (ß = 0.011 and 0.010, P < 0.001). The mediating effects accounted for 24.0% and 16.7% of the total effects, respectively. CONCLUSION: Resilience and friendship quality play an independent or chain-mediating role in longitudinal relationships between Internet addiction and depressive and anxious symptoms. The findings inform targeted intervention strategies to improve the mental health of left-behind adolescents.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Built on the Positive Youth Development (PYD) framework, this study examined how physical activity affected the subjective well-being of adolescents in the multi-ethnic area of southwest China. The mediating role of school connectedness as an external development asset and the moderating role of resilience as an internal development asset were specified and tested within the framework of sport-based PYD. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 3143 adolescents (47.2% boys with mean age = 12.88 and SD = 1.68) was conducted in 2020. A structural equation model (SEM) was developed to estimate the direct effect of physical activity, the mediating effect of school connectedness, and the moderating effect of resilience on adolescents' subjective well-being. Multi-group comparison was made to investigate differences and similarities across three parental absence subgroups: (1) both parents present, (2) one parent absent, and (3) both parents absent. RESULTS: As surmised, physical activity, school connectedness, and resilience all positively and significantly affected adolescents' subjective well-being. SEM analyses revealed that school connectedness mediated the effect of physical activity on subjective well-being. Moreover, resilience moderated both the direct and indirect effects of physical activity (through school connectedness) on subjective well-being. Finally, the multi-group comparison revealed a moderating effect of parental absence on the moderated mediation model. LIMITATIONS: This study is a cross-sectional survey, so inference of causal associations among the study variables is impossible. CONCLUSIONS: Healthy lifestyle behaviors, school-supportive settings, and positive individual development assets can enhance the subjective well-being of adolescents in southwest China, especially those whose parents were absent. Physical activity interventions informed by the PYD framework should be incorporated into public health programs designed to foster the physical and mental health of left-behind adolescents in southwest China.

RESUMEN

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the association of early anxious behavior with serotonin, dopamine, and their metabolites in a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) murine model of Parkinson's disease. Forty C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into the control group (n = 20) and the model group (n = 20). Mice in the model group were injected intraperitoneally with MPTP. The light-dark box (LDB) and elevated plus-maze were used to monitor anxious behavior. The association of early anxious behavior with neurotransmitters in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and striatum was evaluated. In our murine model, MPTP induced a decreased level of 5-hydroxytryptamine and its metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and striatum (all P < 0.05); however, it only induced a decreased level of dopamine and its metabolite homovanillic acid (HVA) in the striatum (both P < 0.001), with a negative correlation in the hippocampus and a positive correlation in the cortex and striatum. In the LDB, 5-hydroxytryptamine levels in the cortex and dopamine and HVA levels in the striatum were negatively correlated with anxious behavior. Moreover, in the elevate plus-maze, 5-hydroxytryptamine and 5-HIAA in the cortex and dopamine and HVA in the striatum were positively correlated with the ratio of the time spent in open arms. In the murine model of early Parkinson's disease, the balance between dopamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine systems varied among brain regions. The depletion of 5-hydroxytryptamine in the cortex and dopamine in the striatum may be associated with anxiety behaviors in MPTP-treated mice.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Chronic subdural effusion is very common in the cranial imaging of middle-aged and older people. Herein, we report a patient misdiagnosed with subdural effusion, who was eventually diagnosed with chronic subdural empyema (SDE) caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. CASE SUMMARY: A 63-year-old man was brought to our emergency room with a headache, vomiting, and disturbed consciousness. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a bilateral subdural effusion at the top left side of the frontal lobe. Cerebrospinal fluid examination after lumbar puncture indicated suppurative meningitis, which improved after anti-infective therapy. However, the patient then presented with acute cognitive dysfunction and right limb paralysis. Repeat CT showed an increase in left frontoparietal subdural effusion, disappearance of the left lateral ventricle, and a shift of the midline to the right. Urgent burr hole drainage showed SDE that was culture-positive for Streptococcus pneumoniae. His condition improved after adequate drainage and antibiotic treatment. CONCLUSION: Patients with unexplained subdural effusion, especially asymmetric subdural effusion with intracranial infection, should be assessed for chronic SDE. Early surgical treatment may be beneficial.

RESUMEN

Ractopamine, as a feed additive, has attracted much attention due to its excessive use, leading to the damage of the human nervous system and physiological function. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to establish a rapid and effective method for the detection of ractopamine in food. Electrochemical sensors served as a promising technique for efficiently sensing food contaminants due to their low cost, sensitive response and simple operation. In this study, an electrochemical sensor for ractopamine detection based on Au nanoparticles functionalized covalent organic frameworks (AuNPs@COFs) was constructed. The AuNPs@COF nanocomposite was synthesized by in situ reduction and was characterized by FTIR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscope and electrochemical methods. The electrochemical sensing performance of AuNPs@COF-modified glassy carbon electrode for ractopamine was investigated using the electrochemical method. The proposed sensor exhibited excellent sensing abilities towards ractopamine and was used for the detection of ractopamine in meat samples. The results showed that this method has high sensitivity and good reliability for the detection of ractopamine. The linear range was 1.2-1600 µmol/L, and the limit of detection (LOD) was 0.12 µmol/L. It is expected that the proposed AuNPs@COF nanocomposites hold great promise for food safety sensing and should be extended for application in other related fields.

RESUMEN

It was reported that fulvic acid (FA) has a positive effect on enhancing plant tolerance to various environmental stresses, including salinity stress and drought stress and so on. However, there is little study regarding the effects of FA on plants in response to heavy metal stress. Hence, the objective of this study was to investigate the potential effects of fulvic acid (FA) on cadmium (Cd) toxicity alleviation in lettuce seedlings. Our results showed that application of 0.5 g/L FA significantly mitigate Cd-induced toxic symptoms in lettuce seedlings. Cd stress triggered plant growth inhibition, photosynthetic pigment reduction, destruction of the photosynthesis apparatus, reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and nutrient elemental imbalance. We observed that FA promoted the growth in lettuce under Cd stress, mainly reflected in those alterations that the increase of biomass, chlorophyll content and photosynthesis capacity and reduction of the Cd content and lipid peroxidation in plant tissue. Foliar spraying of FA significantly alleviated these detrimental symptoms and facilitated nutrient element translocation from root to shoot, particularly the absorption of elements involved in photosynthesis, including iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and manganese (Mn). In summary, foliar application of FA conferred Cd toxicity tolerance to lettuce by increasing ROS-scavenging capacity, inhibiting Cd uptake and the transport of elemental nutrients to shoots, which in turn protected the photosynthetic apparatus and promoted plant growth.

RESUMEN

Logging harvesters represent a set of high-performance modern forestry machinery, which can finish a series of continuous operations such as felling, delimbing, peeling, bucking and so forth with human intervention. It is found by experiment that during the process of the alignment of the harvesting head to capture the trunk, the operator needs a lot of observation, judgment and repeated operations, which lead to the time and fuel losses. In order to improve the operation efficiency and reduce the operating costs, the point clouds for standing trees are collected with a low-cost 2D laser scanner. A cluster extracting algorithm and filtering algorithm are used to classify each trunk from the point cloud. On the assumption that every cross section of the target trunk is approximate a standard circle and combining the information of an Attitude and Heading Reference System, the radii and center locations of the trunks in the scanning range are calculated by the Fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient algorithm. The method is validated through experiments in an aspen forest, and the optimized calculation time consumption is compared with the previous work of other researchers. Moreover, the implementation of the calculation result for automotive capturing trunks by the harvesting head during the logging operation is discussed in particular.
