RESUMEN

There are 2 techniques for detecting red blood cell survival (RBCS) detection techniques: red blood cell labeling test and carbon monoxide (CO) breath test. The former has disadvantages such as long measurement times and complicated procedures, while the latter is simple, convenient, moderately priced, and capable of dynamically monitoring changes in RBCS before and after treatment. Currently, the CO breath test is gradually being implemented in clinical practice. RBCS is not only applied to hematologic diseases such as multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndromes, lymphoma, and thalassemia, but also to non-hematologic diseases like type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease. It can assist in diagnosis, guide treatment, evaluate drug treatment efficacy, and predict disease progression.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate body composition changes with weight cycling (WC) among adult C57BL/6J mice with diet-induced obesity. METHODS: A total of 555 single-housed mice were fed a high-fat diet ad libitum (AL) from 8 to 43 weeks of age. The 200 heaviest mice of each sex were randomized to the following four groups: ever obese (EO, continued AL feeding); obese weight loser (OWL, calorie-restricted); obese weight loser moderate (OWLM, body weight halfway between EO and OWL); and WC (diet restricted to OWL followed by AL refeeding cycles). Body weight and composition data were collected. Linear regression was used to calculate residuals between predicted and observed fat mass. Linear mixed models were used to compare diet groups. RESULTS: Although weight loss and regain resulted in changes in body weight and composition, fat mass, body weight, and relative body fat were not significantly greater for the WC group compared with the EO group. During long-term calorie restriction, males (but not females) in the OWLM group remained relatively fatter than the EO group. CONCLUSIONS: WC did not increase body weight or relative fat mass for middle-aged, high-fat diet-fed adult mice. However, long-term moderate calorie restriction resulted in lower body weight but greater "relative" fat in male mice.

A number of studies have confirmed that Yes-associated protein (YAP)/transcriptional co-activator with PDZ-binding motif (TAZ)-transcriptional enhanced associate domain (TEAD) activity is the driver of cancer development. However, the role and mechanism of the YAP/TAZ-TEAD pathway in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) remain to be clarified. Therefore, this study was designed to observe the effect of YAP/TAZ-TEAD activity on the development of CIN and provide new ideas for the diagnosis and treatment of CIN. Firstly, cervical tissues were collected from CIN patients in different stages [CIN grade 1 (CIN1) tissue, CIN grade 2/3 (CIN 2/3) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)] and healthy volunteers. Next, the expression levels of YAP, TAZ and TEAD in cervical tissues and cells were observed by immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR and western blot. Besides, Z172 and Z183 cells were transfected with siRNA-YAP/TAZ (si-YAP/TAZ) and YAP/TAZ overexpression vector (YAP-5SA). Also, Z172 cells were co-transfected with YAP-5SA and si-TEAD2/4. Subsequently, the stemness characteristics, glycolysis level and malignant transformation of cells in each group were observed by sphere-formation assay, commercial kit, MTT, Transwell, scratch experiment, xenotransplantation and western blot.The expression of YAP, TAZ and TEAD increased significantly in cervical cancer tissue and cell line at the stage of CIN2/3 and SCC. When YAP/TAZ was knocked down, the stemness characteristics, glycolysis level and malignant transformation of cancer cells were notably inhibited; while activating YAP/TAZ exhibited a completely opposite result. In addition, activating YAP/TAZ and knocking down the TEAD expression at the same time significant weakened the effect of activated YAP/TAZ signal on precancerous cells and reduced inhibitory effect of knocking down TEAD alone. YAP/TAZ-TEAD signal activates the characteristics and Warburg effect of cancer stem cells, thereby promoting the malignant transformation of CIN.

Phenotype switching of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) is a pathological process in various vascular diseases. Canopy FGF signaling regulator 2 (CNPY2) has previously been found to be abnormally expressed in ApoE-/- mice and aortic endothelial cells, indicating it may have an important role in vascular diseases. The present study aimed to determine the role and mechanism of CNPY2 in VSMC phenotype switching. Following stimulation with platelet-derived growth factor type BB (PDGF-BB), the expression of CNPY2 in VSMCs was detected using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and western blot analysis. Subsequently, to explore the regulatory effects of CNPY2 on VSMCs, CNPY2 expression was knocked down by transfection with short hairpin RNA and cell viability, proliferation, migration and phenotypic transformation indicators were detected. Western blot analysis was also used to detect the phosphorylation of Akt/mTOR/GSK-3ß pathway-associated proteins downstream of CNPY2. In addition, pretreatment with the Akt pathway activator SC79 was performed to further explore the regulatory mechanisms of CNPY2. The results revealed that CNPY2 expression was upregulated in PDGF-BB-stimulated VSMCs. In addition, the knockdown of CNPY2 inhibited PDGF-BB-induced VSMC hyperproliferation, cell cycle arrest, migration and phenotypic transformation, as well the activation of Akt/mTOR/GSK-3ß pathway-associated proteins. Pretreatment with SC79 significantly reversed the inhibitory effects of CNPY2 knockdown on the proliferation, cell cycle arrest, migration and phenotypic transformation of the model cells. In summary, the present study indicates that CNPY2 regulates the abnormal proliferation, migration and phenotypic transformation of PDGF-BB-stimulated VSMCs via activation of the Akt/mTOR/GSK-3ß signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Chest wall tuberculosis (TB) and triple-negative essential thrombocythemia (TN-ET) are rare medical conditions, and their combination is extremely rare globally. Only one case of TB peritonitis with thrombocytosis has been reported, which was identified in 1974. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we report the case of a 23-year-old man with concurrent chest wall mass and TN-ET. The patient presented to a local hospital due to having a headache and low-grade fever for 2 d, with their bodily temperature fluctuating at around 36.8 °C. Hematological analysis showed a high platelet count of 1503 × 109/L. Subsequently, the patient visited our hospital for further investigation. Computed tomography of the chest suggested a submural soft tissue density shadow in the left lower chest wall. After surgical resection, the pathological findings of the swelling were reported as TB with massive caseous necrosis. According to the World Health Organization diagnostic criteria, the patient was diagnosed with TN-ET, as they met the requirement of four main criteria or the first three main criteria and one secondary criterion. The patient was eventually diagnosed with chest wall TB with TN-ET, which is extremely rare. CONCLUSION: Chest wall TB is rare. TN-ET diagnosis requires secondary factor exclusion and satisfaction of primary diagnostic criteria. miRNA, combined with the methylation process, could explain suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) 1 and SOCS3 downregulation in ET-JAK2V617F-negative patients. The miRNA could participate in JAK2 pathway activation. SOCS3 may be a novel MPN biomarker.

Aims: The study aimed to assess the association of hyperlipidemia and the risk of death in the aneurysm population, focusing on age, gender, and aneurysm location differences. Methods: All patients' data on this retrospective cohort study were obtained from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care (MIMIC-III) database, and the baseline characteristics and laboratory parameters of all patients were collected. The COX regression model was established to explore the association of hyperlipidemia and the risk of death for patients with aneurysms. More importantly, subgroup analyses based on the age, gender, and aneurysm location differences were performed. Results: A total of 1,645 eligible patients were enrolled in this study. These patients were divided into the survival group (n = 1,098) and the death group (n = 547), with a total mortality rate of approximately 33.25%. The result displayed that hyperlipidemia was associated with a decreased death risk in aneurysm patients. In addition, we also found that hyperlipidemia was associated with a lower death risk of abdominal aortic aneurysm and thoracic aortic arch aneurysm among aneurysm patients aged ≥60 years; hyperlipidemia was only a protective factor for the death risk of male patients diagnosed with abdominal aortic aneurysm. For female patients diagnosed with abdominal aortic aneurysm and thoracic aortic arch aneurysm, hyperlipidemia was associated with a decreased death risk. Conclusion: The relationship of hyperlipidemia, hypercholesterolemia, and the risk of death for patients diagnosed with aneurysms was significantly associated with age, gender, and aneurysm location.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking has been proven to increase the risk of cervical cancer, but it is still controversial whether smoking reduces women's ability to clear human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This study investigated the association between smoking behaviors during follow-up and clearance of HPV infection in women with HPV-positive and pathologically normal uterine cervix in China, using a propensity score matching (PSM) analysis. METHODS: The present prospective study included data from women examined in the Gynecology Department of Shanghai General Hospital from January 2018 to June 2020. Twenty patients who smoked throughout follow-up were selected and matched with 60 patients using the 1:3 PSM method on age, marital status, and whether infected with high-risk HPV (HR-HPV). At each visit, smoking and sexual behaviors were collected. The Kaplan-Meier method and a Cox proportional hazard regression model were used to evaluate the probability of clearing HPV infection within a 2-year follow-up. RESULTS: A total of 80 patients were included in the study, all of whom were infected with at least one HR-HPV type at baseline. Current smokers had a lower likelihood of clearing the HPV infection than current non-smokers, after adjusting for a history of sexually transmitted diseases (STD), HPV infection status, and sexual behaviors during follow-up (AHR=0.478; 95% CI: 0.239-0.958, p=0.037). Additionally, longer duration, higher frequency and larger doses of smoking correlated with the lower clearance possibility of HPV infection (p for trend=0.029, 0.022 and 0.026, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the use of tobacco throughout follow-up could increase the risk of a persistent HPV infection, this risk being higher for smokers with heavier tobacco consumption. Our results should alert HPV-positive women to reiterate the advice to cut-back on or stop smoking.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the results of cervical cancer screening in Shanghai General Hospital before and after the COVID-19 epidemic, and analyze the current status and related influencing factors of precervical cancer screening in our hospital under the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The data of 13,748 women of cervical precancer screening with HPV in Shanghai General Hospital were selected.The data included human papillomavirus (HPV), thin-layer liquid-based cytology test (TCT), colposcopy and cervical biopsy, and pathological diagnosis results after trachelectomy in 2019 and 2020, and were analyzed and compared. RESULTS: The detection rates of precancerous lesions and cervical cancer were 2.9061/10,000 and 29.26/10,000 respectively. There was a significant difference in the rate of comparison (χ2 = 30.361, P = 0.000; χ2 = 7.682, P = 0.006);(2) Missing detection rate: In 2020, other positive subtypes other than HPV 16 and 18 who need TCT, the colposcopy, and the histopathological examination missing detection rate were higher than those in 2019 (P < 0.05);(3) Abnormal rate of examination: the abnormal rate of HPV, TCT, and histopathology in 2020 was higher than those in 2019 (P < 0.05);(4) Histopathological analysis: The detection rate of high-grade lesions and invasive cancer in 2020 was higher than those in 2019, and the detection rate of low-grade lesions was lower than that in 2019 (P < 0.05); Conclusion: Health authorities should formulate intervention measures to cope with the safe and timely implementation of cervical cancer screening and subsequent follow-up management during public health emergency.

Multiple potentially toxic elements (PTEs) often coexist in practical wastewater environment, which poses serious risks to the ecological environment and human health. However, few of the reported adsorbents are capable of simultaneously and effectively removing multiple PTEs from wastewater due to the unique properties of each element. In this work, a multifunctional adsorbent FMHs was developed by optimizing Fe2+/Fe3+/Mn2+/HA ratio, and applied to remove Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), As(III), Sb(III), As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous solution. Results revealed that the adsorption data obeyed the Elovich, Sips and Redlich-Peterson models in the mono-component system, and the maximum adsorption capacity of FMHs was superior to most adsorbents reported in the literatures. In addition, FMHs retained considerable removal capacity after four cycles, and maintained excellent adsorption performance under the interference of different environmental factors (including pH, ionic strength, co-existing ions and humic acid). In the multi-component system, FMHs also presented high adsorption capacity for all the selected PTEs, especially for Sb(III/V) and Pb(II). Characterization results confirmed that various removal mechanisms, such as precipitation, surface complexation, ion exchange, electrostatic attraction and redox, were responsible for the capture of PTEs by FMHs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of gene mutation, clinical characteristics and significance in acute leukemia (AL) patients. METHODS: The clinical data of 102 AL patients in Hebei General Hospital from September 2016 to September 2020 were collected and analyzed retrospectively, including the characteristics of gene mutation, age, peripheral blood cells, bone marrow blasts, leukemia subtypes and myeloperoxidase (MPO). RESULTS: The total gene mutation rate was 87.25% (89/102) in all 102 patients. A total of 275 gene mutations were detected, with an average of 2.70 gene mutations per patient. The most frequent mutations of 102 patients were as follows: CEBPA (6.91%), NPM1 and ASXL1(6.18%), TET2 (5.82%), DNMT3A (5.45%), IDH2 and FLT3-ITD (5.09%). Gene mutations often occurred simultaneously. CEBPA mutation occurred in 10 cases of M2 subtype, while TET2 mutation occurred in 9 cases of M2 subtype. Among the most common gene mutations in MPO low expression group, mutation rates of NPM1, DNMT3A, IDH2, SF related gene mutation and RUNX1 were significantly different than those in MPO high expression group (all P<0.05). Univariate analysis showed that age, NPM1, DNMT3A and FLT3-ITD had significant effects on leukocyte level. Logistic regression analysis showed that patients with positive NPM1 mutations may had higher leukocyte levels (p=0.038), and those with positive DNMT3A mutations may had higher platelet levels (p=0.042). CONCLUSION: The incidence of gene mutation in patients with AL is high, and it often occurs simultaneously. CEBPA and TET2 gene mutations are more common in M2 subtype. In patients with MPO low expression, the most common gene mutations are NPM1, DNMT3A and IDH2. AL patients with NPM1 gene mutation had higher white blood cell levels, while with DNMT3A gene mutation had higher platelet levels.

Background: An organized cervical cancer screening program is an effective method to prevent and control cervical cancer. This study aims to find barriers and facilitators in the implementation process of National Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Rural Areas (NACCSPRA) in China through program evaluation, and thus propose suggestions for optimization of the program. Methods: Through stratified sampling, 8 provinces (autonomous cities/districts) in eastern, southern, western, northern, and central China were selected for evaluation of NACCSPRA based on the RE-AIM framework. We obtained 15 program providers' experience and perspectives through semi-structured interviews. The data was analyzed using a combination of deductive and inductive analysis methods. Results: The study found that NACCSPRA mainly serves women with rural household registration or urban minimum living guarantee. Population mobility and certain demographic characteristics such as low education and poor health awareness are common participation barriers, while program publicity acts as a facilitator. A screening program's direct benefit is to promote early detection and treatment of cervical cancer, and its perceived indirect effect is to raise people's health awareness. The proportion of regions adopting the project is relatively high, and factors affecting employees' participation are screening workload, working environment, welfare benefits, degree of preference for grassroots work, and whether the project is included in the performance appraisal; In terms of implementation, there are disparities in screening methods, network informatization levels, and capital investment in various regions. Poor development of screening information system and insufficient screening funds are significant barriers to improvement of project implementation. In contrast, the overall implementation of follow-up is better; related policies issued by the local government and financial subsidies for poor women ensure the maintenance of the project. Conclusion: Shortage of funds is an important problem faced by current screening project, which negatively influences upgrade of cervical cancer prevention strategy, implementors' working environment, and impedes improvement of information network. In addition, defects in population coverage, especially in mobile population also deserves attention. The study found barriers and facilitators of NACCSPRA perceived by project providers and provided a theoretical foundation for project optimization.

Background: Protein-L-isoaspartate O-methyltransferase-1 (PCMT1) is a protein carboxyl methyltransferase enzyme, which has been found to play roles in cancers. However, no clinical information about the correlation between cervical cancer and PCMT1 expression has been reported. Methods: We used immunohistochemistry (IHC) to characterize the protein level of PCMT1 in human cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and cervical cancer specimens. The mRNA expression profile of PCMT1 in cervical cancer was also analyzed by using Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) databases. The prognostic value of PCMT1 in patients with cervical cancer was evaluated by using the Kaplan-Meier plotter. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) was conducted by using The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) cervical cancer dataset. Results: The protein level of PCMT1 was increased in cervical high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) (7.40±0.42) and cervical cancer tissues (10.70±0.54), compared to normal cervix (5.00±0.86) and low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) (6.22±0.57) (P<0.05). the immunoreactivity score (IRS) of PCMT1 was also higher in cervical cancer tissues than in paired adjacent non-cancerous cervical tissues (9.03±0.52 vs. 6.32±0.46) (P<0.05). High expression of PCMT1 was associated with decreased overall survival (OS) of patients with cervical cancer (P=0.0022). GSEA demonstrated that cervical cancer patients with high expression of PCMT1 were enriched in the various cancer-related signaling pathways. Conclusions: These results suggest that PCMT1 might be a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for cervical cancer, and further validation studies should be performed.

Peer support for physical exercise is defined as behaviors such as mutual or one-way provision of material help and/or emotional care and companionship between peers in the physical environment and/or physical behavior. The assessment of peer support is complex and based on reasoning. Trustworthy assessment processes need to provide sufficient evidence of validity. The purpose of this study was to organize, collect, and use Kane's validity framework to provide validity evidence for the identification of peer support for physical exercise among college students. The article describes the experience of using the framework in this study, considers data related to the four inferences (scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implication) that emerge from the assessment process. The findings of the study are then interpreted through the four inferences to determine whether this evidence supports the purpose of this study. Based on Kane's framework to explain the validity process of this study, the study concludes that the evidence in terms of scoring, generalization, extrapolation, and implication supports the use of the PEPSQ for the identification of physical exercise peer support among college students.

In this work, a novel adsorbent FMPs consisting of Fe/Mn (hydr)oxides and phosphate minerals was synthesized by regulating the proportion of Fe(II), Fe(III), Mn(II) and PO43-, and its removal behaviors and possible mechanisms for Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), As(III), Sb(III), As(V) and Sb(V) were systematically investigated. Batch adsorption experiments revealed that the adsorption process of FMPs to these metal(loid) ions conformed to pseudo-second-order (R2 > 0.99) and Redlich-Peterson (R2 > 0.94) models in the mono-component system, demonstrating a hybrid chemical reaction-adsorption process. In addition, the solution pH and ionic strength could affect the adsorption capacity of FMPs to heavy metal(loid)s with varying degrees. Besides, FMPs presented feasible stability and reusability even after four cycles. Combining the macroscopic and microscopic characteristics, the adsorption mechanisms of FMPs mainly included surface complexation, electrostatic adsorption, inner-sphere complexation, hydrogen bonding, redox and pore-filling. In a multi-component system, FMPs exhibited an excellent affinity for capturing Pb(II) and Sb(III/V). This work provides an alternative method for designing and developing a series of novel adsorbent in removing multiple heavy metal(loid)s from wastewater, and demonstrated its application prospect in the remediation of multi-metal(loid) composite polluted water.

Heavy metal pollution is consistently a critical global issue, and bioremediation is regarded as one of the most promising approaches. In this work, the biosorption characteristics of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions using three phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) biomasses, Ochrobactrum cicero (PAB-006), Stenotrophomonas maltophilia (PAB-009), and Pseudomonas putida (PAB-0031), as biosorbents were investigated. Results indicated that the equilibrium biosorption capacities of biosorbents to heavy metal ions were sensitive to the solution pH, and increased with increasing pH values. The experimental data of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) biosorption were in good agreement with the Pseudo-second-order, Redlich-Peterson and Temkin models, implying that the biosorption was a hybrid chemical reaction-biosorption process. In addition, the theoretical maximum biosorption capacities of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) were calculated to be 67.84, 80.23, 50.56 and 63.07 mg/g for PAB-006, 59.99, 87.71, 39.26 and 64.00 mg/g for PAB-009 and 68.31, 85.43, 38.97 and 62.85 mg/g for PAB-031, respectively (pH = 5.0 ± 0.1, T = 25 °C), according to the parameters of the Langmuir model. Moreover, ionic strength had negligible influences or slight promoting effects, while humic acid exhibited positive effects on the removal of heavy metals. Further, PABs were stable and displayed excellent reusability. Characterization techniques of FTIR and XPS revealed that surface complexation, ion exchange, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction were the main mechanisms involved in the biosorption process. In summary, the biosorbent PABs possessed high biosorption performance with excellent reusability, and which hold the great application prospect in the treatment of heavy metal contaminated water.

A method of syngas production via a synergetic conversion of pine sawdust and iron ore was proposed. The roles of conversion temperature, iron ore dosage and calcination time in pine sawdust gasification conversion were investigated. The pyrolysis sequence of groups in pine sawdust was analysed as O-H, C-H, C=O â†’ aromatic ring â†’ C-O-C. A syngas yield of 74.2% with CO proportion of 54.0% was obtained as pine sawdust converted with iron ore dosage of mol(C/Fe) = 0.6 at 1000 °C for 20 min. Iron ore can be used as not only a catalyst to promote the pyrolysis of pine sawdust, generating more combustible gases (increased by 53.1%), but also an oxygen donator to convert carbon in pine sawdust into CO (increased by 89.4%). Meanwhile, iron ore was reduced into pre-reduced product which can be used in blast furnace.

BACKGROUND: Sulforaphane (SFN) is one kind of phytochemical anticancer drug. It inhibits cancer cell proliferation and promotes cell apoptosis while the mechanism behind is still uncertain. We aimed to explore its downstream target and the radiotherapy sensitization mechanism in cervical cancer. METHODS: We treated established cervical cancer cells line (SiHa, HeLa, C33A) with SFN followed by irradiation, and explored its survival, apoptosis, and DNA damage repair in vitro and validated the radiosensitivity of SFN treatment in vivo. We conducted mRNA sequencing to identify differentially expressed mRNAs after SFN treatment. We further investigated SFN downstream target and its involvement in DNA damage repair under irradiation. RESULTS: We found that SFN inhibited the survival of cervical cancer cells under radiotherapy treatment in vitro and prolonged the survival period after radiotherapy in the mouse tumorigenic model. SFN increased the protein expression of LATS2 and promoted apoptosis of cervical cancer cells. Overexpressed LATS2 decreased the cellular survival rate of cervical cancer cells. Additionally, SFN treatment and LATS2 overexpression prevented MDC1 and Rad51 from accumulating in the nucleus in cervical cancer cells after being exposed to ionized radiation. LATS2 loss intervened with SFN-alleviated RAD51 and MDC1 nucleus accumulation and resumed the repairment of DNA damage. CONCLUSION: We identified SFN as cervical cancer cells radiotherapy sensitizer and LATS2 served as a downstream target of SFN treatment. SFN treatment resulted in the inhibition of the homologous recombination (HR) pathway, and LATS2 has an indispensable contribution to this SFN-facilitated radiotherapy sensitization.

In this work, a green adsorbent, biogenic FeS-kaolin composite (KL-FeS) was synthesized by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) mediation, and its potential for Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), As(III) and Sb(III) removal was evaluated. Among prepared composites, the KL-FeS synthesized at a concentration of 2 g/L kaolin performed a better removal efficiency on heavy metal(loid)s and the adsorption results followed the pseudo-second-order and Redlich-Peterson models, indicating that the adsorption was a hybrid chemical reaction-adsorption process. Additionally, the maximum adsorption capacities of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), As(III) and Sb(III) on KL-FeS in monocomponent system were 71.71, 133.54, 51.90, 54.41, 38.71 and 96.38 mg/g, respectively (pH = 5.0 ± 0.1, T = 25 °C). In addition, the increase of pH and ionic strength promoted the adsorption capacities of KL-FeS for metal-(loid)s. Moreover, FTIR, XPS and XRD analyses supported that surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, ion exchange, electrostatic interaction and chemical precipitation were predominately mechanisms involved in the adsorption process. Furthermore, KL-FeS displayed higher affinity for Pb(II), Sb(III) and Cu(II) in the multi-component system. This work highlighted the potential of biogenic FeS-kaolin composite for simultaneous removal of multiple heavy metal(loid)s under aerobic conditions.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main cause of female precancerous lesions and cervical cancer. The development and application of HPV prophylactic vaccines have been recognized as a major effective intervention for the control of cervical lesions. However, the infection rate and clinical characters of non-9-valent vaccine covered HPV subtypes are still worth studying. In this retrospective study, we included patients diagnosed and treated in the Department of Gynecology of Shanghai General Hospital between January 2017 and February 2021. The clinical features of non-9-valent vaccine covered HPV subtypes were explored in 2179 patients who have normal results, 338 patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia 1 (CIN1), and 153 patients with ≥CIN2. Univariate analysis showed that compared to the normal cervix group, age ≥50, pregnancy ≥5, delivery ≥3, menopause, no condom use, and cervical transformation zone type III were risk factors for CIN1 or ≥CIN2 (p < 0.05). Thirty-one percent of CIN1 and 26% of ≥CIN2 were attributed to HPV51, HPV53, HPV56, and HPV68. Multivariate analysis revealed that HPV53, HPV81, age, menopause, cervical transformation area and involved glands were independent risk factors for ≥CIN2 group compared to the CIN1 group (p < 0.05). Additionally, among the 14 non-9-valent vaccine covered HPV subtypes, the infection rates of HPV53, 56, 51, and 68 were higher in this study. In conclusion, our study demonstrated the distribution and pathogenic risk of non-9-valent vaccine covered HPV subtypes in cervical lesions. These findings might supply a foundation for optimizing cervical cancer prevention in the post-vaccine era.

Removal of antimony from wastewater is essential because of its potential harm to the environment and human health. Nano-silica and biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides composites (BS-Fe) were prepared by iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB) mediation and the batch adsorption experiments were applied to investigate antimonite (Sb(III)) and antimonate (Sb(V)) removal behaviors. By contrast, the synthetic BS-Fe calcined at 400 â„ƒ (BS-Fe-400) exhibited a large specific surface area (157.353 m2/g). The maximum adsorption capacities of BS-Fe-400 were 102.10 and 337.31 mg/g for Sb(III) and Sb(V), respectively, and experimental data fit well to the Langmuir isotherm and Temkin models, and followed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. Additionally, increasing pH promoted Sb(III) adsorption, while inhibited the adsorption of Sb(V), indicating that electrostatic attraction made a contribution to Sb(V) adsorption. Moreover, different co-existing ions showed different effects on adsorption. Characterization techniques of FTIR and XPS indicated that the main functional groups involved in the adsorption were -OH, C-O, CO, C-C, etc. and Sb(III) and Sb(V) may bind to iron (oxyhydr)oxides via the formation of inner-sphere complexes. The present work revealed that the synthetic BS-Fe-400 by nano-silica and biogenic iron (oxyhydr)oxides held great application potential in antimony removal from wastewater.
