RESUMEN

The Altai orogen is a typical intracontinental orogen in Central Asia that experienced far-field deformation associated with Indian-Eurasian plate convergence. This region is characterized by uplift comparable to that of the Tianshan Mountains but has a distinct strain rate. Half of the Indo-Asia strain is accommodated by the Tianshan Mountains, whereas the Altai Mountains accommodates only 10%. To elucidate how the Altai Mountains produced such a large amount of uplift with only one-fifth of the strain rate of the Tianshan Mountains, we constructed a detailed crustal image of the Altai Mountains based on a new 166.8-km deep seismic reflection profile. The prestack migration images reveal an antiform within the Erqis crust, an âˆ¼10 km Moho offset between the Altai arc and the East Junggar area, and a major south-dipping (30° dip) thrust in the lower crust beneath the Altai Mountains, which is connected to the Moho offset. The south-dipping thrust not only records the southward subduction of the Ob-Zaisan Ocean in the Paleozoic but also controlled the Altai deformation pattern in the Cenozoic with the Erqis antiform. The Erqis antiform prevented the extension of deformation to the Junggar crust. The south-dipping thrust in the lower crust of the Altai area caused extrusion of the lower crust, generating uplift at the surface, thickening of the crust, and steep (∼10 km) Moho deepening in the Altai Mountains. This process significantly widened the deformation zone of the Altai Mountains. These findings provide a new geodynamic model for describing how inherited crustal structure controls intraplate deformation without strong horizontal stress.

RESUMEN

UV/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) is a promising advanced oxidation technology in water treatment. This study aimed to investigate the impact of UV/PMS on humic acid (HA) and the influence of PMS dosage, pretreatment time, pH pretreatment, nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, and bicarbonate influencing factors on disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation during post-chlorination. With increased PMS dosage or pretreatment time, the UV/PMS treatment significantly reduced ultraviolet absorbance and increased mineralization. It altered the fractional constituent as humic substances were gradually transformed into building blocks and low-molecular-weight acids. However, most DBP formation increased initially and then decreased after subsequent chlorination. Rising nitrate or nitrite concentrations markedly promoted halonitromethane (HNM) formation. The presence of ammonia had a more significant impact on dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) formation. Bicarbonate in UV/PMS pretreatment increased carbonated disinfection byproduct (C-DBP) formation, whereas it had a negligible impact on nitrogenous disinfection byproduct (N-DBP) formation. The present study revealed the impact of a series of influencing factors on DBP formation in UV/PMS reaction systems, providing comprehensive insights on applying UV/PMS in actual practice.

RESUMEN

A Particulate Matter (PM) inhalation model considering exercise load is established to evaluate the impact of PM on residents' travel health. The study chooses PM detectors to collect PM concentrations at the various transportation space, including walking, bicycle, bus, taxi, and subway. A multiple linear regression model revised by road greening is utilized to study the influence factors that have a potential impact on the PM concentration. The air inhalation model with the consideration of exercise load can be acquired by connecting the heart rate (HR) and individual characteristics. The PM2.5 and PM10 inhalation for a complete trip of traveler can be estimated using the proposed model based on air inhalation per time unit, travel time, and PM concentration. The analysis results using the experimental data in Xi'an indicate that PM concentrations in taxi carriage, bus carriage, and subway carriage are significantly different from those obtained from environmental monitoring stations. However, the difference is not significant in the locations of sidewalk, non-motorized lane, taxi station, bus station, subway concourse, and subway platform. PM concentration and humidity in background environment have a positive influence on the increase of PM concentration in transportation environment, while temperature and wind speed are negative. The mean values of air inhalation per time unit for male and female using each mode are in the range of 9.6-26.8 L/min and 9.8-27.8 L/min, respectively. Exposure time in non-motorized transportation has a large effect on PM inhalation of travelers, walking connections and waiting in motorized transportation are the main contributing states to PM inhalation of travelers. The results of the study can be used to predict travelers' PM inhalation in completed trips, and provide recommendations for travelers to choose a healthier mode.

RESUMEN

This study examined the effectiveness for degradation of hydrophobic (HPO), transphilic (TPI) and hydrophilic (HPI) fractions of natural organic matter (NOM) during UV/H2O2, UV/TiO2 and UV/K2S2O8 (UV/PS) advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The changing characteristics of NOM were evaluated by dissolved organic carbon (DOC), the specific UV absorbance (SUVA), trihalomethanes formation potential (THMFP), organic halogen adsorbable on activated carbon formation potential (AOXFP) and parallel factor analysis of excitation-emission matrices (PARAFAC-EEMs). In the three UV-based AOPs, HPI fraction with low molecular weight and aromaticity was more likely to degradate than HPO and TPI, and the removal efficiency of SUVA for HPO was much higher than TPI and HPI fraction. In terms of the specific THMFP of HPO, TPI and HPI, a reduction was achieved in the UV/H2O2 process, and the higest removal rate even reached to 83%. UV/TiO2 and UV/PS processes can only decrease the specific THMFP of HPI. The specific AOXFP of HPO, TPI and HPI fractions were all able to be degraded by the three UV-based AOPs, and HPO content is more susceptible to decompose than TPI and HPI content. UV/H2O2 was found to be the most effective treatment for the removal of THMFP and AOXFP under given conditions. C1 (microbial or marine derived humic-like substances), C2 (terrestrially derived humic-like substances) and C3 (tryptophan-like proteins) fluorescent components of HPO fraction were fairly labile across the UV-based AOPs treatment. C3 of each fraction of NOM was the most resistant to degrade upon the UV-based AOPs. Results from this study may provide the prediction about the consequence of UV-based AOPs for the degradation of different fractions of NOM with varied characteristics.

RESUMEN

With a large amount of domestic sewage and industrial wastewater discharged into the water bodies, sulfur-containing organic matter in wastewater produced volatile organic sulfide, such as dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS) through microorganisms, caused the potential danger of drinking water safety and human health. At present, there is still a lack of technology on the removal of DMTS. In this study, the ultraviolet/peroxymonosulfate (UV/PMS) advanced oxidation processes was used to explore the degradation of DMTS. More than 90% of DMTS (30 µg/L) was removed under the conditions of the concentration ratio of DMTS to PMS was 3:40, the temperature (T) was 25 ± 2℃, and 10 min of irradiation by a 200 W mercury lamp (365 nm). The kinetics rate constant k of DMTS reacting with hydroxyl radical (HO·) was determined to be 0.2477 min-1. Mn2+, Cu2+ and NO3- promoted the degradation of DMTS, whereas humic acid and Cl- in high concentrations inhibited the degradation process. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used to analyze the degradation products and the degradation intermediates were dimethyl disulfide and methanethiol. Density functional theory was used to predict the possible degradation mechanism according to the frontier orbital theory and the bond breaking mechanism of organic compounds. The results showed that the SS, CS and CH bonds in DMTS molecular structure were prone to fracture in the presence of free radicals, resulting in the formation of alkyl radicals and sulfur-containing radicals, which randomly combined to generate a variety of degradation products.

RESUMEN

Humic acid (HA) in water is the main precursor of disinfection by-products in the chlorination process of drinking water. In this study, an ultraviolet/persulfate (UV/PS) process, in a laboratory-scale system, is successful in the degradation of HA. The results showed that HA was significantly degraded (UV254 removal rate of ~ 89%) and partially mineralized (~ 62.5%) by UV/PS treatment at a PS dose of 0.4 mM, pH of 7.12, and UV irradiation time of 160 min. The trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was also significantly reduced (THMFP reduction of ~ 85.4%). A strong linear relationship was observed between UV254 and dissolved organic carbon. The removal rate of HA at low pH was better than that at high pH conditions, and the inhibition by Cl- slowed down after an initial increase, and the inhibition was weaker than HCO3-. By analyzing the fluorescence spectrum of two humic-like substances, the fluorescent compounds C1 and C2 in HA were significantly degraded, and the change in C1 and C2 concentration was correlated with the decrease of THMFP. The degradation of different fractions of natural organic matter in real-world water samples indicated that UV/PS has significant potential to decrease HA in water.

RESUMEN

Trihalomethanes (THMs) and adsorbable organic halides (AOX) were generated in chlorinated water. The purpose of the study was to provide a comprehensive picture of concentration distribution, the seasonal and different water source variability of THMs and AOX. Data for THMs, AOX, and other physico-chemical parameters were from 538 samples of 16 drinking water work through a 3-year sampling program which was conducted in Shandong province with typical temperate and monsoonal climate. Selected samples were considered with the influence of factors such as season, water source, and disinfectant. The THMs and AOX concentration of the samples disinfected with chlorine ranged from 2.1-105 µg/L and 11-238 µg/L, respectively. The THMs and AOX concentration of the samples disinfected chlorine dioxide ranged from N.D.-47.6 µg/L and N.D.-102 µg/L, respectively. The median concentration of THMs and AOX of samples disinfected with chlorine were 35 µg/L and 61 µg/L, much higher than chlorine dioxide, respectively. Ninety-two percent of the samples disinfected with chlorine and all samples disinfected with chlorine dioxide met Chinese drinking water standard for THMs. The ratio of tribromethane (TBM) to THMs of samples disinfected with chlorine was 19%, lower than chlorine dioxide 42%. Bromine substitution factor (BSF) of THMs and initial concentration of bromide showed weak correlation, and the Spearman correlation coefficient was 0.38. THMs and AOX concentrations showed noticeable seasonal variations with the highest median concentrations in spring. The levels of THMs and AOX in drinking water varied with different water sources and followed the order local reservoir > Yellow River reservoir > ground water. The survey results complement the database of THMs and AOX occurrence in drinking water in China, and offer a significant reference data for setting disinfections by-products occurrence in countries or regions with similar climate around the world.

RESUMEN

Previously, inadequate earthquake catalogs and the lack of method made it challenging, if not impossible, to determine the dominant period of earthquake occurrence. With the advent of densely distributed seismic stations in Japan since 2002, 410 642 M1.0+ earthquakes have been cataloged under the mainland within 30-km depth, which provide a superb dataset to identify the periodicity of earthquakes. We processed this catalog using time-frequency analyses and daily stacking, which are powerful in extracting weak periodical signal from strong random noises. We concentrated on the time sector from 0:00 to 6:00 (i.e. from midnight to daybreak), which is a reliable time window for much higher detectability of weak earthquakes, since it has the lowest affects from cultural noises. We successfully observed two apparent periodicities of 12- and 24-hour, which are much smaller than the fortnightly periodicity presented previously in the literature. Synthetic earth tides, after intentionally ignoring the contribution from the Moon, present similar dominant periods as the earthquakes. This may indicate that the dominant period of earthquakes is statistically associated with the Sun rather than the Moon. The daily stacking number of earthquakes using a 15-minute or 1-hour interval shows a peak around 1:30, rather than usually expected 3:00 to 4:00. In addition, bigger earthquakes show more evident variations in the stacking results, and the trend is very consistent for various lower limits of earthquake magnitude from M1.0 to M4.0. These discoveries settled the disputes on the existence of the periodicity of earthquakes since 1886 and may open a window to unravel the mystery of earthquakes.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to establish a tree shrew model of bilateral electrolytic lesions in the medial geniculate body (MGB) to determine the advantages of using a tree shrew model and to assess the pattern of sound processing in tree shrews after bilateral electrolytic damage in different parts of the MGB. The auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) of a normal control group (n = 30) and an electrical damage group (n = 30) were tested at 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 7 days, 15 days, and 30 days after surgery. (1) The bilateral ablations group exhibited a significant increase in the ABR threshold of the electrolytic damage group between pre- and post-operation. (2) There were significant increases in the I-VI latencies at 0 h after MGBd and MGBm lesions and at 24 h after MGBv lesion. (3) The amplitudes of wave VI were significantly decreased at 24 h and 48 h after MGBd lesion, at 72 h and 7 days after MGBm lesion, and at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, and 7 days after MGBv lesion. (1) The electrolytic damage group suffered hearing loss that did not recover and appeared to be difficult to fully repair after bilateral ablation. (2) The latencies and amplitudes of responses in the MGB following bilateral electrolytic lesion were restored to pre-operation levels after 15-30 days, suggesting that a portion of the central nuclei lesion was reversible. (3) The tree shrew auditory animal model has many advantages compared to other animal models, such as greater complexity of brain structure and auditory nuclei fiber connections, which make the results of this experiment more useful for clinical diagnoses compared with studies using rats and guinea pigs.

RESUMEN

It has been proposed that dehydration embrittlement of hydrous materials can trigger intermediate-depth earthquakes and form a double seismic zone in a subducting slab. Seismic anisotropy may provide a possible insight into intermediate-depth intraslab seismicity, because anisotropic properties of minerals change with varying water distribution, temperature and pressure. Here we present a high-resolution model of P-wave radial anisotropy tomography of the Japan subduction zone down to ~400 km depth, which is obtained using a large number of arrival-time data of local earthquakes and teleseismic events. Our results reveal a close correlation between the pattern of intermediate-depth seismicity and anisotropic structures. The seismicity occurs in portions of the Pacific and Philippine Sea slabs where positive radial anisotropy (i.e., horizontal velocity being faster than vertical one) dominates due to dehydration, whereas the inferred anhydrous parts of the slabs are found to be aseismic where negative radial anisotropy (i.e., vertical velocity being faster than horizontal one) dominates. Our anisotropic results suggest that intermediate-depth earthquakes in Japan could be triggered by dehydration embrittlement of hydrous minerals in the subducting slabs.

RESUMEN

The seismic waveforms would be clipped when the amplitude exceeds the upper-limit dynamic range of seismometer. Clipped waveforms are typically assumed not useful and seldom used in waveform-based research. Here, we assume the clipped components of the waveform share the same frequency content with the un-clipped components. We leverage this similarity to convert clipped waveforms to true waveforms by iteratively reconstructing the frequency spectrum using the projection onto convex sets method. Using artificially clipped data we find that statistically the restoration error is ~1% and ~5% when clipped at 70% and 40% peak amplitude, respectively. We verify our method using real data recorded at co-located seismometers that have different gain controls, one set to record large amplitudes on scale and the other set to record low amplitudes on scale. Using our restoration method we recover 87 out of 93 clipped broadband records from the 2013 Mw6.6 Lushan earthquake. Estimating that we recover 20 clipped waveforms for each M5.0+ earthquake, so for the ~1,500 M5.0+ events that occur each year we could restore ~30,000 clipped waveforms each year, which would greatly enhance useable waveform data archives. These restored waveform data would also improve the azimuthal station coverage and spatial footprint.

RESUMEN

We report the surface exploration by the lunar rover Yutu that landed on the young lava flow in the northeastern part of the Mare Imbrium, which is the largest basin on the nearside of the Moon and is filled with several basalt units estimated to date from 3.5 to 2.0 Ga. The onboard lunar penetrating radar conducted a 114-m-long profile, which measured a thickness of ∼5 m of the lunar regolith layer and detected three underlying basalt units at depths of 195, 215, and 345 m. The radar measurements suggest underestimation of the global lunar regolith thickness by other methods and reveal a vast volume of the last volcano eruption. The in situ spectral reflectance and elemental analysis of the lunar soil at the landing site suggest that the young basalt could be derived from an ilmenite-rich mantle reservoir and then assimilated by 10-20% of the last residual melt of the lunar magma ocean.

RESUMEN

The complex frequency shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) can improve the absorbing performance of PML for nearly grazing incident waves. However, traditional PML and CFS-PML are based on first-order wave equations; thus, they are not suitable for second-order wave equation. In this paper, an implementation of CFS-PML for second-order wave equation is presented using auxiliary differential equations. This method is free of both convolution calculations and third-order temporal derivatives. As an unsplit CFS-PML, it can reduce the nearly grazing incidence. Numerical experiments show that it has better absorption than typical PML implementations based on second-order wave equation.

RESUMEN

Aerobic granular sludge was successfully cultivated with the effluent of internal circulation (IC) reactor in a pilot-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) using activated sludge as seeding sludge. N removal was investigated in the start-up of aerobic granulation process. Initially, the phenomenon of partial nitrification was observed and nitrite accumulation rates (NO(2) (-)-N/NO (x) (-) -N) were between 84.6 and 99.1 %. It was potentially caused by ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in the seeding activated sludge, high external environmental temperature (~32 °C) and free ammonia (FA) concentration. After 50 days' running, the aerobic granules-based bioreactor demonstrated perfect performance in simultaneous removal of organic matter and ammonia nitrogen, and average removal efficiencies were maintained above 93 and 96 %, respectively. The maximum nitrogen removal efficiency of 83.1 % was achieved after the formation of aerobic granules. The average diameter of mature aerobic granular sludge mostly ranged from 0.5 to 1.0 mm. Furthermore, one typical cyclic test indicated that pH and DO profiles could be used as effective parameters for biological reactions occurring in the aerobic/anoxic process. The obtained results could provide further information on the cultivation of aerobic granular sludge with practical wastewater, especially with regard to nitrogen-rich industrial wastewater.

RESUMEN

A new method of simultaneous determination of Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ is proposed here by using the second-derivative spectrophotometry method. In pH=10.35 Borax-NaOH buffer, using meso-tetra (3-methoxyl-4-hydroxylphenyl) porphyrin ([T-(3-MO-4-HP)P]) as chromomeric reagent, micelle solution was formed after Tween-80 surfactant was added into the solution containing Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions. The original absorption spectrum of the above complexes was obtained after heating in the boiling water for 25 min. The second-derivative absorption peaks of five metal-porphyrin complexes can be separated from the original absorption spectrum by using chemometric tool. In this way, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+ ions can be determined simultaneously. Under the optimal conditions, the linear ranges of the calibration curve were 0-0.60, 0-0.60, 0-0.40, 0-0.80 and 0-0.48 µg mL(-1) for Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Hg2+ and Pb2+, respectively. The molar absorptivity of these color systems were 1.38×10(5), 1.01×10(5), 3.24×10(5), 1.07×10(5) and 1.29×10(5)Lmol(-1)cm(-1). The method developed in this paper has advantages in selectivity, sensitivity, operation and can effectively resolve spectra overlapping problem. This method has been applied to determine the real samples with satisfactory results.

RESUMEN

Benzoic acid removal is important for the water treatment, and adsorption is an efficient treatment process. Three kinds of modified bentonites, hydroxy-aluminum pillared bentonite (Al(OH)-Bent), octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride modified bentonite (OTMAC-Bent), and both octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride and hydroxy-aluminum modified bentonite (Al(OH)-OTMAC-Bent) were prepared and characterized by XRD, FTIR, and BET analysis. Experiments were conducted on the adsorption of benzoic acid by the prepared modified bentonites at different temperatures in batch experiments. The results show benzoic acid adsorption capabilities of Na-Bent and Al(OH)-Bent are even low, but high for OTMAC-Bent and Al(OH)-OTMAC-Bent. Optimal conditions for the adsorption of benzoic acid on OTMAC-Bent and Al(OH)-OTMAC-Bent were as follows: pH of 3.5, 0.04 g/mL adsorbent, and contact time of 90 min. Increased adsorption with temperature indicates that the adsorptions of benzoic acid onto Al(OH)-OTMAC-Bent and OTMAC-Bent are spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption data could be well interpreted by the Langmuir model and Temkin Equation. The adsorption efficiency was higher than 85%, suggesting that OTMAC-Bent and Al(OH)-OTMAC-Bent are excellent adsorbents for effective benzoic acid removal from water.
