RESUMEN

Female crayfish stores male gametes after mating until the beginning of egg laying and fertilization. The aim of the present study was to investigate the duration of post-mating spermatophore storage as well as the timing and temperature of spawning in two crayfish species of economic importance, namely the signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus and the noble crayfish Astacus astacus. Results showed that the average duration of the post-mating spermatophore storage is significantly (P<0.05) longer in the noble crayfish (34.6±1.7 days, range: 19 to 60 days) than the signal crayfish (3.9±0.5 days, range: 1 to 18 days). The highest percentages of the post-mating spermatophore storage duration in the signal crayfish (46.5%) and the noble crayfish (44.5%) were 1 and 31 to 40 days, respectively. While there is an overlap in the timings of mating and egg laying in the signal crayfish, these two reproductive processes were not observed at the same days in the noble crayfish and there was at least 2 weeks interval between last mating and first egg laying individuals. Average mating and egg laying temperatures were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the signal crayfish than the noble crayfish. The average temperatures for mating in both species were significantly (P<0.05) higher than the temperatures that they utilized for egg laying. In conclusion, female noble crayfish stores post-mating spermatophores a longer duration compared with the signal crayfish. Also, the signal crayfish mates and lays egg in temperatures that are higher than the noble crayfish. Spawning season is shorter in the signal crayfish compared with the noble crayfish. The results of present study provide information contributing to the crayfish broodstock management in aquaculture.

RESUMEN

Hiccups affect life quality, career and family life when they become persistent. We present here a 54-year-old man who worked as a mason and a blacksmith with hiccups complaint for nearly one and a half years. In this period, he was admitted to emergency service ten times with fainting or almost fainting, cold sweating and hand stretching complaints. The patient expressed that he frequently threw up when he had hiccups and his social life was negatively affected. He reported that he was treated with baclofen, esomeprazole and hyoscine-n-butyl bromur without relief. He used escitalopram and chlorpromazine for a short time and quit because they negatively affected his sleeping. As he did not have any relief from medications, he refused any oral medical therapy including gabapentin and started to seek remedy from paramedical treatments resulted with no benefit. The patient was referred to algology department and an intervention on phrenic nerve with pulse radio frequency (8 minutes, 45 Volts, 20 milliseconds wavelength) was performed. Symptoms stopped immediately after the procedure but one week later, although the patient reported a significant decline in symptoms he still had hiccups. The patient was offered oral medical therapy again. With considerable relief from symptoms, the patient accepted oral therapy this time. Gabapentin 300 mg bid was prescribed. The symptoms were completely recovered and the patient reported no hiccups after 30 days of Gabapentin administration. Our case suggests that administration of gabapentin after pulsed radiofrequency might be effective for the treatment of persistent hiccups.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we analyzed gene expression levels of apoptotic (Fas, FasL, Bcl-2, Bax) and survival (CXCR1, CXCR2, IL-8) signal pathways of the urine-deprived bladder tissues and the relation of urinary tract infections with these pathways. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included 37 patients admitted for renal transplantation between December 2009 and December 2012. Bladder mucosal samples were obtained at the time of transplantation and 6-8 weeks posttransplantation, at the time of ureteral catheter removal. RNA extraction and cDNA synthesis were done using guanidium-thiocyanate and colon filter methods. Expression analysis was studied with quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction optimized with ROX dye and internal control ß-actin. RESULTS: According to our findings Fas, FasL, Bcl-2, and Bax expression was higher in urine-deprived bladder samples than those in the posttransplant samples (P < .05). Although Fas, FasL, Bcl-2, and Bax expression levels increased in pretransplant samples, there was an increase in posttransplant bladder samples; however, this increase was not as marked as those of pretransplant samples. IL-8, CXCR1, and CXCR2 expression was decreased at the pretransplant samples and increased in posttransplant bladder samples. CONCLUSIONS: We have found an upregulated apoptotic process and decreased survival signals at the urine-deprived bladder tissue. After transplantation, bladder tissue survival parameters were increased, demonstrating the importance of urinary flow for bladder tissue.
