RESUMEN

The need to create safe materials for biomedical and pharmaceutical applications has become a significant driving force for the development of new systems. Therefore, a chitosan-coated copolymer of itaconic acid, acrylic acid, and N-vinyl caprolactam (IT-AA-NVC) was prepared by radical polymerization and subsequent coating via nanoprecipitation to give a system capable of sustained delivery of melatonin. Although melatonin brings undoubted benefits to the human body, aspects of the optimal dose, route, and time of administration for the obtaining of suitable treatment outcomes remain under discussion. The entrapment of melatonin in biocompatible polymeric systems can prevent its oxidation, decrease its toxicity, and provide an increased half-life, resulting in an enhanced pharmacokinetic profile with improved patient compliance. The structures of the biopolymer and conjugate were proven by FTIR, thermal properties were tested by DSC, and the morphologies were followed by SEM. The loading efficiency and in vitro release profile were studied by means of HPLC, and a delayed release profile with an initial burst was obtained. The potential systemic toxicity of the formulation was studied in vivo; a mild hepatotoxicity was observed following administration of the melatonin-loaded formulation to mice, both by histopathology and blood clinical biochemistry. Histopathology showed a mild nephrotoxicity as well; however, kidney clinical biochemistry did not support this.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal pain may occur after becoming infected with SARS-Cov2. This study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of mesotherapy in treating chronic pain following COVID-19 infection. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of the records of 96 patients with post-COVID pain syndrome. Those who were eligible for oral therapy or mesotherapy, included in the study. Patients receiving oral treatment with diclofenac potassium, thiocolchicoside and cyanocobalamin were included in one group (n = 46), and patients receiving intradermal mesotherapy with 2% lidocaine + cyanocobalamin were included in another group (n = 50). The results of the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and the Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS) were individually assessed before and one week after the treatment. FINDINGS: The participants were 40.2 ± 11.1 years old on average. Of the participants, 35.4% (n = 34) were male and 64.6% (n = 62) were female. Before treatment, there was no statistically significant difference between the patients in terms of VAS and LANSS scores. Following the treatment, a notable positive response was observed in both groups. Nevertheless, when compared to the oral treatment group, the mesotherapy group exhibited a more pronounced enhancement in VAS and LANSS scores (P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). IMPLICATIONS: While both mesotherapy and oral therapy offer benefits in reducing pain and alleviating neuropathic symptoms in post-COVID pain syndrome, mesotherapy stands out as an especially effective and well-tolerated treatment method, surpassing the efficacy of the oral alternative.

RESUMEN

Wildfires are becoming more intense and more frequent, ravaging the habitations and ecosystems in their path. One solution to reducing the risk of damage to buildings and other structures during a fire event is the use of fire-retardant coatings that can stop or slow down the spread of flames, especially for textile materials. The present study focuses on the preparation and application of halogen-free boron/bentonite-based polymeric fire-retardant (FR) hybrid coating formulations for fabrics such as cotton (CO) and polyester (PE) fibers. For the preparation of FR composites, two types of boron derivatives, disodium octaborate and zinc borate, were used in combination with sodium bentonite. A styrene-acrylic copolymer was specifically synthesized and used as a coating binder for FR components to apply on fabrics. The properties of the synthesized copolymer and FR composites were characterized with a particle size analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, a dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), and rheological measurements. The obtained hybrid composites based on styrene-acrylic copolymers and two different inorganic fillers were applied on cotton (CO) and polyester (PE) fabrics with a screen-printing technique, and the flame retardancy performance of the finished textile samples was investigated by means of flame spread and limit oxygen index (LOI) tests. The findings showed that the FR-composite-coated fabrics had higher LOI values and much decreased flame spread rates in comparison with uncoated ones. Among the boron derivatives, the composites prepared with disodium octaborate (FR-A) had much more pronounced LOI values and decreased flame spread behavior in comparison with the composite with zinc borate (FR-B). When compared to a commercial product, the FR-A composite, in conjunction with the specially synthesized polymer, demonstrated commendable fire retardancy performance and emerged as a promising candidate for a halogen-free waterborne fire-retardant coating for fabrics.

RESUMEN

Abstract Objectives: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and ameloblastoma are slowly growing and locally invasive tumors with high recurrence rate. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinicopathologic features of recurrent ameloblastoma and OKC cases, and evaluate outcomes of our treatments in terms of recurrence. Material and Methods: A total of 23 patients with confirmed recurrent ameloblastoma or OKC and treated in our clinic within eleven years period were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Eleven recurrent OKC cases and twelve recurrent ameloblastoma cases were included. Most recurrences occurred within five years after the initial treatment (69.6%). Enucleation had the highest recurrence rate among the first treatments (18/23). All recurrences were located in the mandible, with one exception (22/23). All recurrent OKCs were multilocular. Different histopathologic subtypes of ameloblastoma were seen in our study, follicular ameloblastoma was the most common (8/12). The mean diameter of the lesions was 4.3 cm (ranging from 2 cm to 7 cm). Statically significant relation was found between location and diameter of lesion and year of recurrence onset (p=0.004; p=0.026). We performed radical treatments in these cases (ten patients underwent marginal resections, and thirteen patients underwent segmental resection), and no recurrence was observed during the follow-up period. Conclusion: Previous inadequate surgical procedures were the most important cause of recurrence. Marginal or segmental resection with safety margins is the best method to treat recurrences of OKC or ameloblastoma cases.

Abstract Background Alexithymia is reported to be a risk factor for depression. Psychotherapy is efficient for treatment of depression. Yet, the effect of psychotherapies on alexithymia is poorly understood. Objectives We aimed to compare Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Existential Psychotherapy (ExP) and Supportive Counseling (SUP) for therapeutic efficacy and effect on alexithymia in depression. Methods There were 22 patients for each patient group. Sessions were performed as eight consecutive weekly and following two monthly boosters. Sixty six healthy controls were added. Prior to the sessions, patients received Sociodemographic Data Form, the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-1), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) and 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The control group received Sociodemographic Data Form, SCID-1 and TAS-20. Patients additionally received HDRS and TAS-20 after their weekly and booster sessions. Results Patients' mean TAS-20 score was greater than of controls, however, it did not have a significant change throughout the study. Mean HDRS scores of ExP and CBT groups were lower than SUP group at the end. Discussion Alexithymia did not improve with psychotherapy. The exception was effect of ExP on externally oriented thinking. Psychotherapies all improved depression. CBT and ExP were more helpful than SUP.

RESUMEN

Abstract Objective Not only white blood cells but also platelets are being considered in inflammatory reactions from now on. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been shown to change in inflammatory diseases like myocardial infarction, stroke and implicated in psychiatric disorders nowadays. Our first aim is to investigate the relation of MPV and NLR with depression and secondly to assess if they change with the treatment of depression. Methods Forty-nine patients diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) and hospitalized in a university hospital psychiatry inpatient unit retrospectively included in the study. Control group consisted of 48 hospital workers with no known disease. Complete blood count, Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) and Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale (CGI-S) scores at admission and at discharge were noted and compared for the patient group. Discussion MPV of depressed patients was higher than controls. When we look at admission and discharge scores of clinical scales, decrement is statistically significant for both HAM-D and CGI-S. There was decline both in MPV and NLR which were both statistically significant. Conclusion Decreasing MPV and NLR values with the treatment of depression confirm the involvement of inflammatory processes in the pathophysiology of depression.
