RESUMEN

AIM: The objective of study was to determine the osteogenic potential of bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP-2) loaded onto a particulate porcine bone mineral (PBM) biomaterial using a sinus augmentation model. METHODS: Release kinetics of BMP-2/PBM was determined in vitro. Eight rabbits received BMP-2/PBM or PBM alone into contra-lateral sinus sites. The animals were killed following a 2-week healing interval for micro-CT and histometrical analysis. RESULTS: Approximately 40% of the BMP-2 was released from PBM over the first 3 days in vitro; release maintained at a reduced level through day 21. In vivo, total augmented implant volume did not differ significantly between treatments. However, local bone formation was enhanced in the BMP-2/PBM group compared with PBM control (10.5% versus 6.6%; p = 0.03), specifically in the central aspect of the PBM implant (14.2% versus 5.5%; p < 0.01) and adjoining the Schneiderian membrane (11.9% versus 5.0%; p < 0.05). There were no significant overall differences in residual biomaterial and fibrovascular tissue. CONCLUSION: Bone morphogenetic protein-2 enhanced local bone formation in the rabbit maxillary sinus model following implantation using a PBM carrier.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to characterize the healing process of extraction sockets with a periapical lesion following immediate graft with collagenated bovine bone mineral (CBBM) soaked with epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG). Following induction of periapical lesions in premolars in five dogs, treatment of extraction sockets was divided into three groups: control (no treatment) and two test groups, CBBM with or without EGCG. 3D reconstruction and superimposition of the digital images were used to measure the dimensional changes in alveolar ridge. Histologic specimen was evaluated in all groups. The horizontal ridge widths at 4-mm level were wider in both test groups (3.3 ± 1.7 mm in CBBM; 3.0 ± 1.7 mm in CBBM+EGCG) than in the control group (1.7 ± 2.4 mm). Fibrosis and limited new bone formation were observed in the apical regions of test groups; however, the extent of fibrosis was less in the CBBM+EGCG group. Within the limitations of this study, it was conjectured that adjunctive use of EGCG with CBBM can be a candidate biomaterial in grafting of extraction socket with periapical lesion. Bone regeneration at the coronal region of the CBBM grafted socket might not be influenced by the presence of a periapical lesion.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of adjunctive application of locally delivered minocycline ointment associated with flap surgery for the treatment of patients with chronic severe periodontitis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty patients with chronic severe periodontitis were treated in a split-mouth study to either adjunctive application of locally delivered minocycline ointment in association with flap surgery (FM) or flap surgery only (FO); additional minocycline application was performed at 3 months post operation. Clinical evaluation of the plaque index, probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival recession, and clinical attachment level (CAL) was conducted at baseline and at 3 and 6 months after treatment. RESULTS: Clinical evaluations revealed that although both sites exhibited clinical improvement, there was a statistically significant reduction in PD (3.34 ± 0.03 mm) and BOP (78.01 ± 11.42%), and a significant gain of CAL (1.88 ± 0.21 mm) at the FM site compared with the FO site (reduction of PD and BOP: 2.62 ± 0.06 mm, 50.33 ± 15.01%, and gain of CAL: 1.55 ± 0.13 mm) at 6 months post operation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Adjunctive application of locally delivered minocycline may be beneficial to the surgical treatment protocol of chronic severe periodontitis.
