Parkinson's disease is characterized by multiple neurotransmitter systems beyond the traditional dopaminergic pathway, yet their influence on volumetric alterations is not well comprehended. We included 72 de novo, drug-naïve Parkinson's disease patients and 61 healthy controls. Voxel-wise gray matter volume was evaluated between Parkinson's disease and healthy controls, as well as among Parkinson's disease subgroups categorized by clinical manifestations. The Juspace toolbox was utilized to explore the spatial relationship between gray matter atrophy and neurotransmitter distribution. Parkinson's disease patients exhibited widespread GM atrophy in the cerebral and cerebellar regions, with spatial correlations with various neurotransmitter receptors (FDR-P < 0.05). Cognitively impaired Parkinson's disease patients showed gray matter atrophy in the left middle temporal atrophy, which is associated with serotoninergic, dopaminergic, cholinergic, and glutamatergic receptors (FDR-P < 0.05). Postural and gait disorder patients showed atrophy in the right precuneus, which is correlated with serotoninergic, dopaminergic, gamma-aminobutyric acid, and opioid receptors (FDR-P < 0.05). Patients with anxiety showed atrophy in the right superior orbital frontal region; those with depression showed atrophy in the left lingual and right inferior occipital regions. Both conditions were linked to serotoninergic and dopaminergic receptors (FDR-P < 0.05). Parkinson's disease patients exhibited regional gray matter atrophy with a significant distribution of specific neurotransmitters, which might provide insights into the underlying pathophysiology of clinical manifestations and develop targeted intervention strategies.

PURPOSE: Establishing breast MRI imaging patterns associated with neoadjuvant immunotherapy is needed to monitor response. We analyzed serial breast MRIs in patients receiving neoadjuvant chemo-immunotherapy on the I-SPY2 clinical trial. METHODS: Patients with stage 2-3 HER2-negative breast cancer were randomized to weekly paclitaxel (control), weekly paclitaxel and pembrolizumab, or weekly paclitaxel, pembrolizumab and intra-tumoral injection of SD-101, a TLR9 agonist. All patients received AC. Regional lymph nodes were retrospectively evaluated on breast MRI at baseline, 3, 12 and 20 weeks by a single blinded radiologist. MRIs were assessed for development of new regional lymphadenopathy, or increase in the longest diameter or cortical thickness of the largest abnormal regional lymph node. RESULTS: Between 12/2015 and 4/2021, a total of 43 patients enrolled in the control (n = 16) and paclitaxel + pembrolizumab ± SD-101 (n = 27) arms. 12 of 27 patients (44.4%) receiving chemo-immunotherapy experienced increased lymphadenopathy within the first 12 weeks compared to 1 of 16 patients (6.3%) in the control group (p = 0.014). Most patients with increased lymphadenopathy were in the SD101/pembro arm (n = 10, p = 0.002). Increased lymphadenopathy was observed despite concomitant decrease in breast tumor size at all time points. 11 of 12 patients with increased lymphadenopathy had pathologically negative nodes at surgery. There was no association between lymphadenopathy and lower residual cancer burden or immune-related toxicity. CONCLUSIONS: The combination of neoadjuvant paclitaxel and pembrolizumab ± SD101 intratumoral injection was associated with early increases in regional lymphadenopathy on MRI despite decreased breast tumor size. Increased lymphadenopathy was not associated with node positive disease at surgery.

In the post-pandemic era, psychological traumas have emerged as major mental health issues. However, the post-traumatic reactions and their connections with social-emotional competence among high school students experiencing COVID-19 lockdown have not been adequately explored. This study aimed to reveal the characteristics of their positive and negative post-traumatic reactions, and their connections with social-emotional competence. Network analysis was used on data from 1096 Chinese high school students who experienced COVID-19 lockdown. Measures included the DSECS-S, the PTGI and the PC-PTSD-5. The results revealed that "Valuing life" and "Recalling unwillingly" were identified as core factors of post-traumatic reactions, while "Having close friendships", "Getting along well with others" and "Respecting others' emotions" played a bridging role in connecting the communities of social-emotional competence and post-traumatic reactions. This study enriches research on post-traumatic reactions, emphasizing the importance of implementing social-emotional competence programs to tackle mental health crises.

The study aims to investigate the potential of training efficient deep learning models by using 2.5D (2.5-Dimension) masks of sICH. Furthermore, it intends to evaluate and compare the predictive performance of a joint model incorporating four types of features with standalone 2.5D deep learning, radiomics, radiology, and clinical models for early expansion in sICH. A total of 254 sICH patients were enrolled retrospectively and divided into two groups according to whether the hematoma was enlarged or not. The 2.5D mask of sICH is constructed with the maximum axial, coronal and sagittal planes of the hematoma, which is used to train the deep learning model and extract deep learning features. Predictive models were built on clinic, radiology, radiomics and deep learning features separately and four type features jointly. The diagnostic performance of each model was measured using the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), Accuracy, Recall, F1 and decision curve analysis (DCA). The AUCs of the clinic model, radiology model, radiomics model, deep learning model, joint model, and nomogram model on the train set (training and Cross-validation) were 0.639, 0.682, 0.859, 0.807, 0.939, and 0.942, respectively, while the AUCs on the test set (external validation) were 0.680, 0.758, 0.802, 0.857, 0.929, and 0.926. Decision curve analysis showed that the joint model was superior to the other models and demonstrated good consistency between the predicted probability of early hematoma expansion and the actual occurrence probability. Our study demonstrates that the joint model is a more efficient and robust prediction model, as verified by multicenter data. This finding highlights the potential clinical utility of a multifactorial prediction model that integrates various data sources for prognostication in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage. The Critical Relevance Statement: Combining 2.5D deep learning features with clinic features, radiology markers, and radiomics signatures to establish a joint model enabling physicians to conduct better-individualized assessments the risk of early expansion of sICH.

Freezing of gait is a significant and debilitating motor symptom often observed in individuals with Parkinson's disease. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, along with its multi-level feature indices, has provided a fresh perspective and valuable insight into the study of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease. It has been revealed that Parkinson's disease is accompanied by widespread irregularities in inherent brain network activity. However, the effective integration of the multi-level indices of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging into clinical settings for the diagnosis of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease remains a challenge. Although previous studies have demonstrated that radiomics can extract optimal features as biomarkers to identify or predict diseases, a knowledge gap still exists in the field of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease. This cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate the ability of radiomics features based on multi-level indices of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging, along with clinical features, to distinguish between Parkinson's disease patients with and without freezing of gait. We recruited 28 patients with Parkinson's disease who had freezing of gait (15 men and 13 women, average age 63 years) and 30 patients with Parkinson's disease who had no freezing of gait (16 men and 14 women, average age 64 years). Magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained using a 3.0T scanner to extract the mean amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations, mean regional homogeneity, and degree centrality. Neurological and clinical characteristics were also evaluated. We used the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm to extract features and established feedforward neural network models based solely on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging indicators. We then performed predictive analysis of three distinct groups based on resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging indicators indicators combined with clinical features. Subsequently, we conducted 100 additional five-fold cross-validations to determine the most effective model for each classification task and evaluated the performance of the model using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The results showed that when differentiating patients with Parkinson's disease who had freezing of gait from those who did not have freezing of gait, or from healthy controls, the models using only the mean regional homogeneity values achieved the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve values of 0.750 (with an accuracy of 70.9%) and 0.759 (with an accuracy of 65.3%), respectively. When classifying patients with Parkinson's disease who had freezing of gait from those who had no freezing of gait, the model using the mean amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation values combined with two clinical features achieved the highest area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.847 (with an accuracy of 74.3%). The most significant features for patients with Parkinson's disease who had freezing of gait were amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation alterations in the left parahippocampal gyrus and two clinical characteristics: Montreal Cognitive Assessment and Hamilton Depression Scale scores. Our findings suggest that radiomics features derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging indices and clinical information can serve as valuable indices for the identification of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease.

Introduction: Amidst an emerging infectious disease outbreak, the rational allocation of vaccines and medical resources is crucial for controlling the epidemic's progression. Method: Analysing COVID-19 data in Taiyuan City from December 2022 to January 2023, this study constructed a S V 1 V 2 V 3 E I Q H R dynamics model to assess the impact of COVID-19 vaccination and resource allocation on epidemic trends. Results: Vaccination significantly reduces infection rates, hospitalisations, and severe cases, while also curtailing strain on medical resources by reducing congestion periods. An early and sufficient reserve of medical resources can delay the onset of medical congestion, and with increased maximum capacity of medical resources, the congestion's end can be accelerated. Stronger resource allocation capabilities lead to earlier congestion resolution within a fixed total resource pool. Discussion: Integrating vaccination and medical resource allocation can effectively reduce medical congestion duration and alleviate the epidemic's strain on medical resource capacity (CCMR).

Background: The decline in the number of new HIV infections among adults has slowed down, gradually becoming the biggest obstacle to achieving the 2030 target of ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Thus, a political declaration to ensure that 90% of people at high risk of HIV infection can access comprehensive prevention services was proposed by the United Nations General Assembly. Therefore, obtaining an accurate estimated size of high-risk populations is required as a prior condition to plan and implement HIV prevention services. The network scale-up method (NSUM) was recommended by the United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS and the World Health Organization to estimate the sizes of populations at high risk of HIV infection; however, we found that the NSUM also revealed underlying population characteristics of female sex workers in addition to being used to estimate the population size. Such information on underlying population characteristics is very useful in improving the planning and implementation of HIV prevention services. This is especially relevant for people who inject drugs, where in addition to stigma and discrimination, criminalization further hinders access to HIV prevention services. Objective: We aimed to conduct a further exploration of the public health implications of the NSUM by using it to estimate the population size, popularity ratio, and information transmission rate among people who inject drugs. Methods: A stratified 2-stage cluster survey of the general population and a respondent-driven sampling survey of people who inject drugs were conducted in the urban district of Taiyuan, China, in 2021. Results: The estimated size of the population of people who inject drugs in Taiyuan was 1241.9 (95% CI 1009.2-1474.9), corresponding to 4.4×10-2% (95% CI 3.6×10-2% to 5.2×10-2%) of the adult population aged 15-64 years. The estimated popularity ratio of people who inject drugs was 53.6% (95% CI 47.2%-60.1%), and the estimated information transmission rate was 87.9% (95% CI 86.5%-89.3%). Conclusions: In addition to being used to estimate the size of the population of people who inject drugs, the NSUM revealed that they have smaller-sized personal social networks while concealing their drug use, and these underlying population characteristics are extremely useful for planning appropriate service delivery approaches with the fewest barriers for people who inject drugs to access HIV prevention services. Therefore, more cost-effectiveness brings new public health implications for the NSUM, which makes it even more promising for its application.

BACKGROUND: Auxin, a plant hormone, plays diverse roles in the modulation of plant growth and development. The transport and signal transduction of auxin are regulated by various factors involved in shaping plant morphology and responding to external environmental conditions. The auxin signal transduction is primarily governed by the following two gene families: the auxin response factor (ARF) and auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (AUX/IAA). However, a comprehensive genomic analysis involving the expression profiles, structures, and functional features of the ARF and AUX/IAA gene families in Vaccinium bracteatum has not been carried out to date. RESULTS: Through the acquisition of genomic and expression data, coupled with an analysis using online tools, two gene family members were identified. This groundwork provides a distinguishing characterization of the chosen gene families in terms of expression, interaction, and response in the growth and development of plant fruits. In our genome-wide search of the VaARF and VaIAA genes in Vaccinium bracteatum, we identified 26 VaARF and 17 VaIAA genes. We analyzed the sequence and structural characteristics of these VaARF and VaIAA genes. We found that 26 VaARF and 17 VaIAA genes were divided into six subfamilies. Based on protein interaction predictions, VaIAA1 and VaIAA20 were designated core members of VaIAA gene families. Moreover, an analysis of expression patterns showed that 14 ARF genes and 12 IAA genes exhibited significantly varied expressions during fruit development. CONCLUSION: Two key genes, namely, VaIAA1 and VaIAA20, belonging to a gene family, play a potentially crucial role in fruit development through 26 VaARF-IAAs. This study provides a valuable reference for investigating the molecular mechanism of fruit development and lays the foundation for further research on Vaccinium bracteatum.

BACKGROUND: For patients with clinically node-positive (cN+) breast cancer undergoing neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC), retrieving previously clipped, biopsy-proven positive lymph nodes during sentinel lymph node biopsy [i.e., targeted axillary dissection (TAD)] may reduce false negative rates. However, the overall utilization and impact of clipping positive nodes remains uncertain. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed cN+ ISPY-2 patients (2011-2022) undergoing axillary surgery after NAC. We evaluated trends in node clipping and associations with type of axillary surgery [sentinel lymph node (SLN) only, SLN and axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), or ALND only] and event-free survival (EFS) in patients that were cN+ on a NAC trial. RESULTS: Among 801 cN+ patients, 161 (20.1%) had pre-NAC clip placement in the positive node. The proportion of patients that were cN+ undergoing clip placement increased from 2.4 to 36.2% between 2011 and 2021. Multivariable logistic regression showed nodal clipping was independently associated with higher odds of SLN-only surgery [odds ratio (OR) 4.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) 2.8-6.8, p < 0.001]. This was also true among patients with residual pathologically node-positive (pN+) disease. Completion ALND rate did not differ based on clip retrieval success. No significant differences in EFS were observed in those with or without clip placement, both with or without successful clip retrieval [hazard ratio (HR) 0.85, 95% CI 0.4-1.7, p = 0.7; HR 1.8, 95% CI 0.5-6.0, p = 0.3, respectively]. CONCLUSION: Clip placement in the positive lymph node before NAC is increasingly common. The significant association between clip placement and omission of axillary dissection, even among patients with pN+ disease, suggests a paradigm shift toward TAD as a definitive surgical management strategy in patients with pN+ disease after NAC.

BACKGROUND: Patients with resectable gastric adenocarcinoma accompanied by vascular cancer thrombus (RGAVCT) have a poor prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate ranging from 18.42%-53.57%. These patients need a reasonable postoperative treatment plan to improve their prognosis. AIM: To determine the most effective postoperative chemotherapy regimen for patients with RGAVCT. METHODS: We retrospectively collected the clinicopathological data of 530 patients who underwent radical resection for gastric cancer between January 2017 and January 2022 and who were pathologically diagnosed with gastric adenocarcinoma with a choroidal cancer embolus. Furthermore, we identified the high-risk variables that can influence the prognosis of patients with RGAVCT by assessing the clinical and pathological features of the patients who met the inclusion criteria. We also assessed the significance of survival outcomes using Mantel-Cox univariate and multivariate analyses. The subgroups of patients with stages I, II, and III disease who received single-, dual-, or triple-drug regimens following surgery were analyzed using SPSS 25.0 and the ggplot2 package in R 4.3.0. RESULTS: In all, 530 eligible individuals with RGAVCT were enrolled in this study. The median overall survival (OS) of patients with RGAVCT was 24 months, and the survival rates were 80.2%, 62.5%, and 42.3% at 12, 24, and 59 months, respectively. Preoperative complications, tumor size, T stage, and postoperative chemotherapy were identified as independent factors that influenced OS in patients with RGAVCT according to the Cox multivariate analysis model. A Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that chemotherapy had no effect on OS of patients with stage I or II RGAVCT; however, chemotherapy did have an effect on OS of stage III patients. Stage III patients who were treated with chemotherapy consisting of dual- or triple-agent regimens had better survival than those treated with single-agent regimens, and no significant difference was observed in the survival of patients treated with chemotherapy consisting of dual- or triple-agent regimens. CONCLUSION: For patients with stage III RGAVCT, a dual-agent regimen of postoperative chemotherapy should be recommended rather than a triple-agent treatment, as the latter is associated with increased frequency of adverse events.

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to explore the patterns of resting-state network (RSN) connectivity alterations and investigate how the influences of individual-level network connections on cognition varied across clinical stages without assuming a constant relationship. METHODS: 108 PD patients with continuum of cognitive decline (PD-NC = 46, PD-MCI = 43, PDD = 19) and 34 healthy controls (HCs) underwent resting-state functional MRI and neuropsychological tests. Independent component analysis (ICA) and graph theory analyses (GTA) were employed to explore RSN connection changes. Additionally, stage-dependent differential impact of network communication on cognitive performance were examined using sparse varying coefficient modeling. RESULTS: Compared to HCs, the dorsal attention network (DAN) and dorsal sensorimotor network (dSMN) were central networks with decreased connections in PD-NC and PD-MCI stage, while the lateral visual network (LVN) emerged as a central network in patients with dementia. Additionally, connectivity of the cerebellum network (CBN) increased in the PD-NC and PD-MCI stages. GTA demonstrated decreased nodal metrics for DAN and dSMN, coupled with an increase for CBN. Moreover, the degree centrality (DC) values of DAN and dSMN exhibited a stage-dependent differential impact on cognitive performance across the continuum of cognitive decline. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that across the progression of cognitive impairment, the LVN gradually transitions into a core node with reduced connectivity, while the enhancement of connections in CBN diminishes. Furthermore, the non-linear relationship between the DC values of RSNs and cognitive decline indicates the potential for tailored interventions targeting specific stages.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a leading cause of cancer-associated death worldwide. Its molecular mechanisms, especially concerning autophagy and various signaling pathways, are not fully understood. Fatty Acid Binding Protein 6 (FABP6) and RE1 Silencing Transcription Factor (REST) emerge as potential key players in this context. This study sought to analyze the functional relationship of FABP6 and REST concerning autophagy and their implications on the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway within GC cells. METHODS: A comprehensive bioinformatics approach was used to identify key prognostic markers in GC. The effects of FABP6 and REST on autophagy along with Akt/mTOR signaling pathways were analyzed by techniques including Western blotting (WB), flow cytometry, Transwell assay, dual luciferase reporter assay, and others. RESULTS: FABP6 was identified as overexpressed in GC, linked with poor prognosis. FABP6 silencing reduces GC cell proliferation, induces S- and G2-phase arrest, and downregulates cyclins CDK2 and CDK4. It also inhibited GC cell invasion/migration and autophagy, effects that were counteracted by MG132. When combined with PI3K inhibitor LY294002c, FABP6 knockdown showed synergistic anti-proliferative effects, modulating the Akt/mTOR pathway. Besides, the transcription factor REST has been shown to directly regulate FABP6 expression, affecting autophagy and the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in a FABP6-dependent manner. CONCLUSIONS: REST positively regulates autophagy and negatively affects the Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in GC cells in a FABP6-dependent manner, providing valuable insights into regulatory networks involving FABP6 and REST.

BACKGROUND: Although brain glymphatic dysfunction is a contributing factor to the cognitive deficits in Parkinson's disease (PD), its role in the longitudinal progression of cognitive dysfunction remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the glymphatic function in PD with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) that progresses to dementia (PDD) and to determine its predictive value in identifying individuals at high risk for developing dementia. METHODS: We included 64 patients with PD meeting criteria for MCI and categorized them as either progressed to PDD (converters) (n = 29) or did not progress to PDD (nonconverters) (n = 35), depending on whether they developed dementia during follow-up. Meanwhile, 35 age- and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) were included. Bilateral diffusion-tensor imaging analysis along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) indices and enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) volume fraction in bilateral centrum semiovale, basal ganglia (BG), and midbrain were compared among the three groups. Correlations among the DTI-ALPS index and EPVS, as well as cognitive performance were analyzed. Additionally, we investigated the mediation effect of EPVS on DTI-ALPS and cognitive function. RESULTS: PDD converters had lower cognitive composites scores in the executive domains than did nonconverters (P < 0.001). Besides, PDD converters had a significantly lower DTI-ALPS index in the left hemisphere (P < 0.001) and a larger volume fraction of BG-PVS (P = 0.03) compared to HC and PDD nonconverters. Lower DTI-ALPS index and increased BG-PVS volume fraction were associated with worse performance in the global cognitive performance and executive function. However, there was no significant mediating effect. Receiver operating characteristic analysis revealed that the DTI-ALPS could effectively identify PDD converters with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.850. CONCLUSION: The reduction of glymphatic activity, measured by the DTI-ALPS, could potentially be used as a non-invasive indicator in forecasting high risk of dementia conversion before the onset of dementia in PD patients.

Background: Diabetes mellitus predisposes individuals to respiratory infections. The airway epithelial barrier provides defense against inhaled antigens and pathogens. Ezrin, is a component of the membrane-cytoskeleton that maintains the cellular morphology, intercellular adhesion, and barrier function of epithelial cells. This study aimed to explore the role of ezrin in airway epithelial barrier damage and correlate its expression and activation with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This study was performed in a murine model of diabetes mellitus and with human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells using real-time PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemical and immunofluorescence staining. Ezrin was knocked down in BEAS-2B cells using siRNA. Ezrin phosphorylation levels were measured to determine activation status. The integrity of the airway epithelial barrier was assessed in vivo by characterizing morphological structure, and in vitro in BEAS-2B cells by measuring tight junction protein expression, transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) and permeability. Results: We demonstrated that ezrin expression levels were lower in the lung tissue and airway epithelium of diabetic mice than those in control mice. The morphological structure of the airway epithelium was altered in diabetic mice. High glucose levels downregulated the expression and distribution of ezrin and connexin 43, reduced the expression of tight junction proteins, and altered the epithelial barrier characteristics of BEAS-2B cells. Ezrin knockdown had effects similar to those of high glucose levels. Moreover, a specific inhibitor of ezrin Thr567 phosphorylation (NSC305787) inhibited epithelial barrier formation. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that ezrin expression and activation are associated with airway epithelial damage in diabetes mellitus. These findings provide new insights into the molecular pathogenesis of pulmonary infections in diabetes mellitus and may lead to novel therapeutic interventions for airway epithelial barrier damage.

The emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) as contaminants in soil poses a significant threat to public health. Earthworms (Eisenia foetida), which are common inhabitants of soil, have been extensively studied for their influence on ARGs. However, the specific impact of earthworms on penicillin-related ARGs remains unclear. In this study, we investigate the role of earthworms in mitigating ARGs, specifically penicillin-related ARGs, in ampicillin-contaminated soil. Utilizing high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR), we quantified a significant reduction in the relative abundance of penicillin-related ARGs in soil treated with earthworms, showing a decrease with a p-value of <0.01. Furthermore, high-throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that earthworm intervention markedly alters the microbial community structure, notably enhancing the prevalence of specific bacterial phyla such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, and Tenericutes. Our findings not only demonstrate the effectiveness of earthworms in reducing the environmental load of penicillin-related ARGs but also provide insight into the alteration of microbial communities as a potential mechanism. This research contributes to our understanding of the role of earthworms in mitigating the spread of antibiotic resistance and provides valuable insights for the development of strategies to combat this global health issue.

Metal-free carbon catalysts (MFCCs) are one of the commonly used catalysts for electrocatalytic two-electron oxygen reduction (2e- ORR) synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Oxygen doping is an effective means to improve the performance of MFCCs, but the performance of oxygen-doped carbon catalysts is still not high enough, and the contribution of different oxygen functional groups (OFGs) to the catalytic performance is still inconclusive. In this paper, carbon-based catalysts with different oxygen contents and ratios of OFGs were prepared, and the high 2e- ORR activity of COOH + C-OH was demonstrated by combining the results of experiments and theoretical calculations. The prepared oxygen-doped carbon-based catalyst C-0.1M80 achieved an onset potential of 0.795 V (vs RHE), a selectivity of up to 98.2% (0.6 V vs RHE), and a H2O2 oxidation current of 1.33 mA cm-2 (0.5 V vs RHE) in a rotating ring-disk electrode test (0.1 M KOH solution), which was an outstanding performance in MFCCs. In a solid electrolyte flow cell, C-0.1M80 achieved a Faraday efficiency of 97.5% at 200 mA cm-2 with a corresponding H2O2 production rate of 123.7 mg cm-2 h-1. In addition, a flow cell stability test was performed at an industrial current density (100 mA cm-2) with an astounding 200 h of uninterrupted operation, also achieving an outstanding average Faradaic efficiency (95.8%).

This work was to demonstrate the relationship between serum 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), serum phosphorus (SP), and parathyroid hormone (PTH) and parathyroid function after central lymph node dissection (CLND) in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). 200 PTC patients after CLND were included, who were rolled into a control group (CG) (n = 89 cases without hypoparathyroidism) and an observation group (OG) (n = 111 cases with complicated hypoparathyroidism). The 1,25(OH)2D3, SP, and PTH levels were detected, and the diagnostic effect of these indicators was assessed. The serum PTH levels of patients in CG after surgery were normal relative to those before surgery, while the serum PTH of patients in OG was relatively lower. 1,25(OH)2D3 concentration of patients in OG was also inferior to CG, while the SP level was superior (P < 0.05). Hypoparathyroidism was positively correlated with serum PTH (r = 0.382) and 1,25(OH)2D3 (r = 0.321) and negatively correlated with SP (r = - 0.211). The area under the curve (AUC) (0.893), sensitivity (90.83%), and specificity (94.77%) of the joint diagnosis of 1,25(OH)2D3 + SP + PTH were greatly superior to those of the single diagnosis and the pairwise diagnosis with the three indicators (P < 0.05). Hypoparathyroidism in patients with PTC after CLND surgery was positively correlated with 1,25(OH)2D3 and PTH and negatively correlated with SP concentration. In addition, the combination diagnosis of 1,25(OH)2D3, PTH, and SP worked well.

The left atrial appendage (LAA) occluder is an important medical device for closing the LAA and preventing stroke. The device-related thrombus (DRT) prevents the implantation of the occluder in exerting the desired therapeutic effect, which is primarily caused by the delayed endothelialization of the occluder. Functional coatings are an effective strategy for accelerating the endothelialization of occluders. However, the occluder surface area is particularly large and structurally complex, and the device is subjected to a large shear friction in the sheath during implantation, which poses a significant challenge to the coating. Herein, a hydrogel coating by the in situ UV-triggered polymerization of double-network polyelectrolytes is reported. The findings reveal that the double network and electrostatic interactions between the networks resulted in excellent mechanical properties of the hydrogel coating. The sulfonate and Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) groups in the coating promoted hemocompatibility and endothelial growth of the occluder, respectively. The coating significantly accelerated the endothelialization of the LAA occluder in a canine model is further demonstrated. This study has potential clinical benefits in reducing both the incidence of DRT and the postoperative anticoagulant course for LAA closure.

To evaluate the efficacy of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) as a psychological intervention for elderly patients with extensive burns, focusing on its impact on emotional well-being, self-efficacy and quality of life. A prospective, randomized study involving 200 elderly burn patients was conducted from November 2021 to January 2023. The patients were randomly assigned to receive either standard care (control group) or burn care based on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT-B) (study group), with 100 patients in each group. Outcome measures included the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain assessment, 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36) for quality of life, General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The study revealed that CBT-based intervention significantly reduced anxiety and depression scores compared with standard care (p < 0.05). Additionally, patients in the CBT group exhibited improved self-efficacy, self-esteem and quality of life (p < 0.05). CBT proves to be a valuable intervention for elderly burn patients, effectively addressing emotional distress and enhancing their psychological well-being. By modifying negative cognitive patterns, providing coping mechanisms and fostering problem-solving skills, CBT-based care contributes to a more positive recovery experience and improved quality of life.
