Background: Recent studies have shown that regular physical activity (PA) can positively influence mobile phone addiction (MPA) behaviors in college students. However, it remains unknown whether this effect is mediated by other factors. Evidence suggests that resilience and interaction anxiousness may be candidate mediators that partly explain the positive effect of PA on MPA. This study aims to explore the impact of PA on MPA through a mediation model, and the role of resilience and interaction anxiousness in this relationship. Methods: The participants were 590 college students (272 males; mean age = 19.67) who completed a psychosocial battery, including the international physical activity questionnaire-short form (IPAQ-SF), the connor - davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC), the interaction anxiousness scale (IAS), and the mobile phone addiction index (MPAI). Correlations of variables were computed using Pearson's test. Mediation models were tested using SPSSS PROCESS macro with the regression bootstrapping method. Results: PA were negatively associated with MPA behavior (r=-.21, p < 0.01). Resilience and interaction anxiousness moderated the relationship between PA and MPA. More importantly, PA could also influence MPA through the chain-mediating effects of resilience and interaction anxiousness. Conclusion: It is essential to improve resilience and reduce interaction anxiousness to reduce MPA problems through regular engagement in PA among college students.

We conducted an umbrella review of virtual reality (VR) technology interventions and cognitive improvement in older adults with cognitive disorders to establish a hierarchy of evidence. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases from database creation to February 2023. We included meta-analyses relevant to our study objectives for the overall review. We assessed the methodological quality according to AMSTAR2, and we used the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) method to assess the credibility of the evidence. This overall review was registered with the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (CRD42023423063). We identified six meta-analyses that included 12 cognitive outcomes, but only memory (Standardized Mean Difference(SMD) = 0.27, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04 to 0.49), depression (SMD = -1.26, 95% CI: -1.8 to -0.72), and global cognition (SMD = 0.42, 95% CI: 0.18 to 0.66) improved through the VR technology intervention. Using the 95% prediction interval (PI) results, we found that VR technology did not significantly affect the cognitive abilities of people with cognitive decline despite increasing the subject size. We conclude that the VR technology intervention improved only specific cognitive abilities.

Oncolytic viruses are a new class of therapeutic agents for the treatment of cancer that have shown promising results in clinical trials. Oncolytic virus-mediated tumor rejection is highly dependent on viral replication in tumor cells to induce cell death. However, the antiviral immune response of tumor cells limits the replication capacity of oncolytic viruses. We hypothesized that inhibition of the antiviral immune response in infected cells would enhance the antitumor effect. Here, we confirmed that ablation of the key adaptor protein of cellular immunity, STING, significantly suppressed the antiviral immune response and promoted oncolytic herpes simplex virus-1 (oHSV1) proliferation in tumor cells. In a murine pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) model, oHSV1 enhanced tumor suppression and prolonged the survival of mice in the absence of STING. On this basis, we further found that the TBK1 inhibitor can also significantly enhance the tumor-control ability of oHSV1. Our studies provide a novel strategy for oncolytic virus therapy by inhibiting the intrinsic antiviral response in solid tumors to improve antitumor efficacy.

OBJECTIVE: There are several meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrating the benefits of virtual reality (VR) training as an intervention for motor performance, activity of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QoL) outcomes in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the aggregate evidence collected to date has not been thoroughly evaluated for strength, quality, and reproducibility. An umbrella review from published meta-analyses of RCTs was conducted to evaluate the strength and quality of existing evidence regarding the efficacy of VR training in improving the motor performance, ADL and QoL outcomes of patients with PD. METHODS: PubMed, PsychInfo, Web of Science, and Scopus were searched to identify relevant meta-analysis of RCTs examining the effects of VR training on motor performance and quality of life outcomes in PD patients. We recalculated the effect sizes (Hedges'g) for VR training using DerSimonian and Laird (DL) random effects models. We further assessed between-study heterogeneity, prediction interval (PI), publication bias, small-size studies, and whether the results of the observed positive studies were better than would be expected by chance. Based on these calculations, the quality of evidence for each outcome was assessed by using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluations (GRADE) criteria. RESULTS: Four meta-analysis with eight outcomes included in the umbrella review was recalculated effect size. Pooled results found VR training can large improve the basic balance ability, moderate improve the overall balance capacity and moderate improve the stride length in PD patients. For ADL and QoL, the effect sizes were pooled that suggested VR training can moderate improve ADL and QoL for PD patients. However, no statistically clear evidence was found in walking speed, motor function and gait function during VR training. The analyzed meta-analyses showed low-to-moderate methodological quality (AMSTAR2) as well as presented evidence of moderate-to-very low quality (GRADE). Tow adverse reactions were reported in the included meta-analyses. CONCLUSIONS: In this umbrella review, a beneficial correlation between VR and balance ability, stride length, ADL and QoL in PD patients was discovered, especially for the very positive effect of VR on balance because of two of the eight outcomes related to balance ability showed large effect size. The observations were accompanied by moderate- to very low-quality rating evidence, supporting VR training as a practical approach to rehabilitation.

Objective: This study investigated the relationship between executive function and prefrontal cortex oxygenation during exercise in young adults with different Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) levels. Methods: A total of 28 amateur runners (n = 14) and sedentary college students (n = 14) were recruited. The maximum oxygen uptake estimated for the sub-maximal intensity run (4.97 miles/h) was used to indicate the different CRF levels. After 1 week, participants must complete the Stroop and 2-Back tasks in silence while performing moderate-intensity exercise. Using 19-channel functional near-infrared spectroscopic (fNIRS) to examine changes in prefrontal cortex oxyhemoglobin. Results: There was no significant difference in the correctness of the Stroop and 2-Back tasks between the two groups during exercise, but the amateur runner group showed an acceleration in reaction time. fNIRS results showed that during the exercise 2-Back task, the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex oxyhemoglobin was higher in the amateur runner group than in the sedentary group. Conclusion: Executive function during exercise was similarly improved in participants with better fitness, suggesting that CRF provides an excellent metabolic reserve and directed allocation for cognitive tasks during exercise.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Banxia Xiexin decoction (BXD) is a classic Chinese herbal formulation consisting of 7 herbs including Pinelliae Rhizoma, Scutellariae Radix, Zingiberis Rhizoma, Ginseng Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, and Jujubae Fructus, which can exert effects on lowering lipids and alleviating depressive mood disorders via affecting gastrointestinal tract. AIM OF THE STUDY: The pathogenesis of atherosclerosis (AS) co-depression disease has not been well studied, and the current clinical treatment strategies are not satisfactory. As a result, it is critical to find novel methods of treatment. Based on the hypothesis that the gut microbiome may promote the development of AS co-depression disease by regulating host lipid metabolism, this study sought to evaluate the effectiveness and action mechanism of BXD in regulation of the gut microbiome via an intervention in AS co-depression mice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To determine the primary constituents of BXD, UPLC-Q/TOF-MS analysis was carried out. Sixteen C56BL/6 mice were fed normal chow as a control group; 64 ApoE-/- mice were randomized into four groups (model group and three treatment groups) and fed high-fat chow combined with daily bind stimulation for sixteen weeks to develop the AS co-depression mouse model and were administered saline or low, medium or high concentrations of BXD during the experimental modeling period. The antidepressant efficacy of BXD was examined by weighing, a sucrose preference test, an open field test, and a tail suspension experiment. The effectiveness of BXD as an anti-AS treatment was evaluated by means of biochemical indices, the HE staining method, and the Oil red O staining method. The impacts of BXD on the gut microbiome structure and brain (hippocampus and prefrontal cortex tissue) lipids in mice with the AS co-depression model were examined by 16S rDNA sequencing combined with lipidomics analysis. RESULTS: The main components of BXD include baicalin, berberine, ginsenoside Rb1, and 18 other substances. BXD could improve depression-like behavioral characteristics and AS-related indices in AS co-depression mice; BXD could regulate the abundance of some flora (phylum level: reduced abundance of Proteobacteria and Deferribacteres; genus level: reduced abundance of Clostridium_IV, Helicobacter, and Pseudoflavonifractor, Acetatifactor, Oscillibacter, which were significantly different). The lipidomics analysis showed that the differential lipids between the model and gavaged high-dose BXD (BXH) groups were enriched in glycerophospholipid metabolism, and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC(20:3)(rep)(rep)) in the hippocampus and LPC(20:4)(rep) in the prefrontal cortex both showed downregulation in BXH. The correlation analysis illustrated that the screened differential lipids were mainly linked to Deferribacteres and Actinobacteria. CONCLUSION: BXD may exert an anti-AS co-depression therapeutic effect by modulating the abundance of some flora and thus intervening in peripheral lipid and brain lipid metabolism (via downregulation of LPC levels).

Lipid metabolism disorders may considerably contribute to the formation and development of atherosclerosis (AS). Traditional Chinese medicine has received considerable attention in recent years owing to its ability to treat lipid metabolism disorders using multiple components and targets. Verbena officinalis (VO), a Chinese herbal medicine, exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunomodulatory, and neuroprotective effects. Evidence suggests that VO regulates lipid metabolism; however, its role in AS remains unclear. In the present study, an integrated network pharmacology approach, molecular docking, and molecular dynamics simulation (MDS) were applied to examine the mechanism of VO against AS. Analysis revealed 209 potential targets for the 11 main ingredients in VO. Further, 2698 mechanistic targets for AS were identified, including 147 intersection targets between VO and AS. Quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol were considered key ingredients for the treatment of AS based on a potential ingredient target-AS target network. GO analysis revealed that biological processes were primarily associated with responses to xenobiotic stimuli, cellular responses to lipids, and responses to hormones. Cell components were predominantly focused on the membrane microdomain, membrane raft, and caveola nucleus. Molecular functions were mainly focused on DNA-binding transcription factor binding, RNA polymerase II-specific DNA-binding transcription factor binding, and transcription factor binding. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis identified pathways in cancer, fluid shear stress, and atherosclerosis, with lipid and atherosclerosis being the most significantly enriched pathways. Molecular docking revealed that three key ingredients in VO (i.e., quercetin, luteolin, and kaempferol) strongly interacted with three potential targets (i.e., AKT1, IL-6, and TNF-α). Further, MDS revealed that quercetin had a stronger binding affinity for AKT1. These findings suggest that VO has beneficial effects on AS via these potential targets that are closely related to the lipid and atherosclerosis pathways. Our study utilized a new computer-aided drug design to identify key ingredients, potential targets, various biological processes, and multiple pathways associated with the clinical roles of VO in AS, which provides a comprehensive and systemic pharmacological explanation for the anti-atherosclerotic activity of VO.

Objective: To explore the effects of single-session transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on aerobic performance and explosive force in the one-arm pull-down of long-term trained rock climbers. Method: Twenty athletes (twelve male and eight female) from the Rock Climbing Team of Hunan province (Hunan, China) were selected for a randomized double-blind crossover study. After baseline tests, All subjects visited laboratories twice to randomly receive either sham or a-tDCS at a current intensity of 2 mA for 20 min. The two visits were more than 72 h apart. Immediately after each stimulation, subjects completed a 9-min 3-level-load aerobic test and a one-arm pull-down test. Results: Differences in the heart rate immediately after 9-min incremental aerobic exercises revealed no statistical significance between each group (p > 0.05). However, the decrease in heart rate per unit time after exercise after real stimulation was significantly better than before stimulation (p < 0.05), and no statistical significance was observed between after sham stimulation and before stimulation (p > 0.05). One-arm pull-down explosive force on both sides after real stimulation was improved by a-tDCS compared with before stimulation, but with no significant difference (p > 0.05). Real stimulation was significantly improved, compared with sham stimulation on the right side (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Single-session tDCS could potentially benefit sports performance in professional athletes.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major driver of hepatocarcinogenesis. Ferroptosis is a type of iron-mediated cell death that can suppress liver transformation. Previous studies have linked HBV to ferroptosis in liver fibrosis and acute liver failure. However, whether ferroptosis is involved in HBV-mediated liver cancer is poorly understood. Here, we identified heat shock protein family A member 8 (HSPA8) as a crucial host factor that modulates HBV replication and ferroptosis in liver cancer. Hepatitis B X protein (HBx) upregulated HSPA8 by coactivating the transcription factor heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) in cells. HSPA8 enhanced HBV replication by recruiting hepatitis B core protein (HBc) to the HBV covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA) minichromosome, forming a positive feedback loop. Moreover, HSPA8 suppressed ferroptosis in liver cancer cells by upregulating the expression of SLC7A11/GPX4 and decreasing erastin-mediated reactive oxygen species and Fe2+ accumulation in cells in vitro and in vivo. Inhibition of HSPA8 reduced the growth of HBV-positive liver tumors and increased sensitivity to erastin. In conclusion, HBx-elevated HSPA8 regulates both HBV replication and ferroptosis in liver cancer. Targeting HSPA8 could be a promising strategy for controlling HBV and hepatocarcinogenesis. SIGNIFICANCE: HBV-induced upregulation of HSPA8 promotes hepatocarcinogenesis by suppressing ferroptosis and stimulating HBV replication, identifying HSPA8 as a potential therapeutic target in liver cancer.

Fungicides are often used to extend the storage time of postharvest satsuma mandarin fruit. In recent years, fungicide residue has become an issue of food safety. This study aimed to investigate the distribution and migration of three typical fungicides (imazalil, prochloraz, thiophanate-methyl) in postharvest satsuma mandarins using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Three fungicides could quickly penetrate satsuma mandarins and their gradient concentrations of residues in the fruit were: carpopodium > mesocarp > epicarp > pulp. However, the residues of three fungicides in the edible pulp were obviously lower than the maximum residue limit (MRL = 5.0 mg/kg in China). Residues of the three fungicides decreased in epicarp and carpopodium but increased in mesocarp and pulp during storage. Fungicides could quickly penetrate the fruit, settling primarily in the carpopodium but little in the pulp. Both epicarp and carpopodium were the breakthrough pathways for the fungicides entering the fruit, while epicarp was the main route for the penetration of fungicides. These findings shed new information on the behavior of fungicides and the safety issue of satsuma mandarins.

Oncolytic viruses are an emerging cancer treatment modality with promising results in clinical trials. The new generation of oncolytic viruses are genetically modified to enhance virus selectivity for tumor cells and allow local expression of therapeutic genes in tumors. The traditional technique for viral genome engineering based on homologous recombination using a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) system is laborious and time-consuming. With the advent of the CRISPR/Cas9 system, the efficiency of gene editing in human cells and other organisms has dramatically increased. In this report, we successfully applied the CRISPR/Cas9 technique to construct an HSV-based oncolytic virus, where the ICP34.5 coding region was replaced with the therapeutic genes murine interleukin 12 (IL12, p40-p35) and C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 11 (CXCL11), and ICP47 gene was deleted. The combination of IL12 and CXCL11 in oncolytic viruses showed considerable promise in colorectal cancer (CRC) treatment. Overall, our study describes genetic modification of the HSV-1 genome using the CRISPR/Cas9 system and provides evidence from principle studies for engineering of the HSV genome to express foreign genes.

Background: Lower extremity stiffness simulates the response of the lower extremity to landing in running. However, its relationship with running economy (RE) remains unclear. This study aims to explore the relationship between lower extremity stiffness and RE. Methods: This study utilized articles from the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus discussing the relationships between RE and indicators of lower extremity stiffness, namely vertical stiffness, leg stiffness, and joint stiffness. Methodological quality was assessed using the Joanna Australian Centre for Evidence-Based Care (JBI). Pearson correlation coefficients were utilized to summarize effect sizes, and meta-regression analysis was used to assess the extent of this association between speed and participant level. Result: In total, thirteen studies involving 272 runners met the inclusion criteria and were included in this review. The quality of the thirteen studies ranged from moderate to high. The meta-analysis results showed a negative correlation between vertical stiffness (r = -0.520, 95% CI, -0.635 to -0.384, p < 0.001) and leg stiffness (r = -0.568, 95% CI, -0.723 to -0.357, p < 0.001) and RE. Additional, there was a small negative correlation between knee stiffness and RE (r = -0.290, 95% CI, -0.508 to -0.037, p = 0.025). Meta-regression results showed that the extent to which leg stiffness was negatively correlated with RE was influenced by speed (coefficient = -0.409, p = 0.020, r 2 = 0.79) and participant maximal oxygen uptake (coefficient = -0.068, p = 0.010, r 2 = 0.92). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that vertical, leg and knee stiffness were negatively correlated with RE. In addition, maximum oxygen uptake and speed will determine whether the runner can take full advantage of leg stiffness to minimize energy expenditure.

The prevalence of diabetes has been increasing in recent years, and previous research has found that machine-learning models are good diabetes prediction tools. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of five different machine-learning models for diabetes prediction using lifestyle data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. The 1999-2020 NHANES database yielded data on 17,833 individuals data based on demographic characteristics and lifestyle-related variables. To screen training data for machine models, the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) forward propagation algorithm was utilized. For predicting diabetes, five machine-learning models (CATBoost, XGBoost, Random Forest (RF), Logistic Regression (LR), and Support Vector Machine (SVM)) were developed. Model performance was evaluated using accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, F1 score, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Among the five machine-learning models, the dietary intake levels of energy, carbohydrate, and fat, contributed the most to the prediction of diabetes patients. In terms of model performance, CATBoost ranks higher than RF, LG, XGBoost, and SVM. The best-performing machine-learning model among the five is CATBoost, which achieves an accuracy of 82.1% and an AUC of 0.83. Machine-learning models based on NHANES data can assist medical institutions in identifying diabetes patients.

Introduction: To investigate the effect of exercise on the walking economy (WE) of patients with chronic neurological conditions (CNCs) and to determine the type of physical activity that best improves the WE of patients with CNCs. Methods: Four electronic databases were searched until December 2022 (Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane, and CINAHL). Studies were screened using the following inclusion criteria: 1. randomized controlled or non-randomized controlled trials; 2. exercise interventions >4 weeks in duration; 3. patients aged ≥18 years with a diagnosis of CNCs. 4. walking economy of patients measured before and after the intervention. The PEDro scale was used to assess the methodological quality of the included studies. Results and discussion: Twenty-two studies met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis results showed that exercise significantly improved WE (g = -0.352, 95% CI, -0.625 to -0.078, P = 0.012). Subgroup analysis revealed that patients who received exercise showed better WE compared with those who underwent no control intervention (g = -0.474, 95% CI, -0.636 to -0.311, P < 0.001). However, exercise therapy did not show a significant improvement of WE compared with control groups (g = -0.192, 95% CI, -0.451 to 0.067, P = 0.146). In addition, we found that endurance combined with resistance, high-intensity intermittent, and other training modalities resulted in better WE compared with the pre-intervention. Of these, interval training has the greatest effect on improving WE. In conclusion, exercise can improve WE in patients with CNCs. More randomized controlled trials are necessary for the future.
