RESUMEN

Echinococcosis and tuberculosis are two common zoonotic diseases that can cause severe pulmonary infections. Early screening and treatment monitoring are of great significance, especially in areas with limited medical resources. Herein, we designed an operation-friendly and rapid magnetic enrichment-silver acetylene chromogenic immunoassay (Me-Sacia) to monitor the antibody. The main components included secondary antibody-modified magnetic nanoparticles (MNP-Ab2) as capture nanoparticles, specific peptide (EG95 or CFP10)-modified silver nanoparticles (AgNP-PTs) as detection nanoparticles, and alkyne-modified gold nanoflowers as chromogenic nanoparticles. Based on the magnetic separation and plasma luminescence techniques, Me-Sacia could completely replace the colorimetric assay of biological enzymes. It reduced the detection time to approximately 1 h and simplified the labor-intensive and equipment-intensive processes associated with conventional ELISA. Meanwhile, the Me-Sacia showed universality for various blood samples and intuitive observation with the naked eye. Compared to conventional ELISA, Me-Sacia lowered the detection limit by approximately 96.8 %, increased the overall speed by approximately 15 times, and improved sensitivity by approximately 7.2 %, with a 100 % specificity and a coefficient of variation (CV) of less than 15 %.

RESUMEN

Communities of bacteria, especially symbionts, are vital for the growth and development of insects and other arthropods, including Bemisia tabaci Mediterranean (MED), a destructive and invasive insect pest. However, the infection density patterns and influence factors of bacteria in whiteflies, which mainly include symbionts, remain largely unclear. To reveal the different density patterns of Cardinium in B. tabaci MED populations and the impacts of high temperatures on whiteflies with different Cardinium density infection patterns, 2 isofemale lines isolated from B. tabaci MED from the same geographical population of China and from B. tabaci MED collected from other countries and locations were examined using several techniques and methods, including fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), 16S rRNA gene sequencing, and 2b-RAD sequencing. The results showed that there were 2 different infection density patterns of Cardinium in B. tabaci MED (including 1 high-density pattern and 1 low-density pattern). For whiteflies with low-density Cardinium, conventional PCR could not detect Cardinium, but the other techniques confirmed that there was a low level of Cardinium within hosts. High temperature significantly decreased the diversity of bacterial communities: the relative titer of Cardinium increased but the density of Rickettsia decreased in the isofemale line with high-density Cardinium. However, high temperature did not influence the diversity and symbiont density in the line with low-density Cardinium. Moreover, high temperature influenced the functions of bacterial communities in whiteflies with high-density Cardinium but did not affect the bacterial functions in whiteflies with low-density Cardinium. Our results provide novel insights into the complex associations between symbionts and host insects.

RESUMEN

Ferroptosis has been implicated in tumor progression and immunoregulation. Identification of ferroptosis-related prognostic gene is important for immunotherapy and prognosis in ovarian cancer (OV). We assessed the potential predictive power of a novel ferroptosis-related gene (FRG) signature for prognosis and immunotherapy in Asian and Caucasian OV populations. We collected gene expression profiles and clinicopathological data from public databases. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator Cox regression algorithm was used to construct the FRG signature. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, Kaplan-Meier method, Cox regression model were used to evaluate the clinical benefits of FRG signature. Gene functional and gene set enrichment analyses were used for functional annotation and immune landscape analysis. A 15-FRG signature was constructed and used to stratify patients into two risk groups. Patients in the high-risk group had significantly worse survival. The risk score was a significant independent risk factor for OS. The area under the ROC curve indicated the good prediction performance of the FRG signature. Notably, the low-risk group showed a significant enrichment in immune-related pathways and a "hot" immune status. The risk score was found to be an efficient and robust predictor of response to immunotherapy. In conclusion, our study identified a novel 15-FRG prognostic signature that can be used for prognostic prediction and precision immunotherapy in Asian and Caucasian OV populations.

RESUMEN

This paper studies whether containing COVID-19 pandemic by stringent strategies deteriorates or saves economic growth. Since there are country-specific factors that could affect both economic growth and deaths due to COVID-19, we first start with a cross-country analysis on identifying risk and protective factors on the COVID-19 deaths using large across-country variation. Using data on 100 countries from 3 January to 27 November 2020 and taking into account the possibility of underreporting, we find that for deaths per million population, GDP per capita, population density, and income inequality are the three most important risk factors; government effectiveness, temperature, and hospital beds are the three most important protective factors. Second, inspired by the stochastic frontier literature, we construct a measure of pandemic containment effectiveness (PCE) after controlling for country-specific factors and rank countries by their PCE scores for deaths. Finally, by linking the PCE score with GDP growth data in Quarters 2 and 3 of 2020, we find that PCE is positively associated with economic growth in major economies. Countries with average PCE scores, such as Malaysia, would gain more GDP growth by 3.47 percentage points if they could improve their PCE scores for deaths to South Korea's level in Q2 of 2020. Therefore, there is not a trade-off between lives and livelihood facing by governments. Instead, to save economy, it is important to contain the pandemic first. Our conclusion is also mainly valid for infections due to COVID-19.

RESUMEN

Inhibition of return (IOR) is a mechanism of the attention system involving bias toward novel stimuli and delayed generation of responses to targets at previously attended locations. According to the two-component theory, IOR consists of a perceptual component and an oculomotor component (oculomotor IOR [O-IOR]) depending on whether the eye movement system is activated. Previous studies have shown that multisensory integration weakens IOR when paying attention to both visual and auditory modalities. However, it remains unclear whether the O-IOR effect attenuated by multisensory integration also occurs when the oculomotor system is activated. Here, using two eye movement experiments, we investigated the effect of multisensory integration on O-IOR using the exogenous spatial cueing paradigm. In Experiment 1, we found a greater visual O-IOR effect compared with audiovisual and auditory O-IOR in divided modality attention. The relative multisensory response enhancement (rMRE) and violations of Miller's bound showed a greater magnitude of multisensory integration in the cued location compared with the uncued location. In Experiment 2, the magnitude of the audiovisual O-IOR effect was significantly less than that of the visual O-IOR in single visual modality selective attention. Implications for the effect of multisensory integration on O-IOR were discussed under conditions of oculomotor system activation, shedding new light on the two-component theory of IOR.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUD: Cardinium symbiont is a maternally inherited bacterial endosymbiont and widely spreads in arthropods including Bemisia tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae). However, the potential role of Cardinium played in the biology of their hosts is largely unknown. In two genetic lines (i.e. LS and SG lines) of B. tabaci MED, collected from different locations in China, we tested the effects of Cardinium on the performance of the host whitefly under a constant high temperature (31 °C) using the age-stage two-sex life table method, and explored the genes influenced by Cardinium-infection by RNA-sequencing. RESULTS: We found that Cardinium did provide protection of B. tabaci against heat stress under 31 °C. However, there was a significant connection between Cardinium-infection and whitefly genetic backgrounds. Performance revealed that Cardinium infection can increase the longevity of both female and male adults and oviposition periods in both lines, but it also conferred benefits of fecundity and pre-adult period to LS line. Additionally, the population parameters such as intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ) and mean generation time (T) demonstrated that Cardinium infection conferred fitness benefits to LS line but not to SG line. Transcriptome analysis indicated that several genes related to homeostasis and metamorphosis such as ubiquitin-related genes were highly expressed in Cardinium-infected B. tabaci. CONCLUSION: The research provided the first evidence that Cardinium can increase the thermal tolerance of whitefly, which may be associated with host genetic background.

RESUMEN

The in situ hydrothermal mineralization for a mixture of graphene oxide (GO) and Co-responsive supramolecular hydrogels led to a hybrid graphene aerogel, doped with Co and N elements. The as-prepared aerogels exhibited a competitive half-wave potential (0.840 V, versus RHE) and peak current density (2.35 mA cm-2) to that of Pt/C (0.836 V, 2.23 mA cm-2, respectively). Furthermore, they demonstrated a significantly perfect catalytic efficiency (nearly 100% of 4e- ORR) toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Insight into the structural details of the hybrid aerogels indicates that the CoOX active sites anchored on the graphene matrix play a central role in the upgrading of the catalytic performance of graphene aerogels.

RESUMEN

This manuscript introduces a one-pot fabrication procedure for the preparation of supramolecular hybrid hydrogels from low-cost commercially available natural products through a "green" strategy. In particular, the hybrid hydrogels, which are developed with Fmoc-Glu-OMe, silver nanoparticles and chitosan, exhibit outstanding antibacterial properties and can be regarded as excellent mouldable wound healing biomaterials.
