RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Bone quality is one of the most important clinical factors for the primary stability and successful osseointegration of dental implants. This preliminary pilot study aimed to evaluate the clinical applicability of deep learning (DL) for assessing bone quality using panoramic (PA) radiographs compared with an implant surgeon's subjective tactile sense and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) values. METHODS: In total, PA images of 2,270 edentulous sites for implant placement were selected, and the corresponding CBCT relative gray value measurements and bone quality classification were performed using 3-dimensional dental image analysis software. Based on the pre-trained and fine-tuned ResNet-50 architecture, the bone quality classification of PA images was classified into 4 levels, from D1 to D4, and Spearman correlation analyses were performed with the implant surgeon's tactile sense and CBCT values. RESULTS: The classification accuracy of DL was evaluated using a test dataset comprising 454 cropped PA images, and it achieved an area under the receiving characteristic curve of 0.762 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.714-0.810). Spearman correlation analysis of bone quality showed significant positive correlations with the CBCT classification (r=0.702; 95% CI, 0.651-0.747; P<0.001) and the surgeon's tactile sense (r=0.658; 95% CI, 0.600-0.708, P<0.001) versus the DL classification. CONCLUSIONS: DL classification using PA images showed a significant and consistent correlation with CBCT classification and the surgeon's tactile sense in classifying the bone quality at the implant placement site. Further research based on high-quality quantitative datasets is essential to increase the reliability and validity of this method for actual clinical applications.

PURPOSE: Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP), a widely used biomaterial for bone regeneration, contains synthetic hydroxyapatite (HA) and ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP), the ratio of which can be adjusted to modulate the rate of degradation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic benefits of reconstructing peri-implant bone defects with a newly developed BCP consisting of 40% ß-TCP and 60% HA compared to demineralized bovine bone mineral (DBBM). METHODS: This prospective, multicenter, parallel, single-blind randomized controlled trial was conducted at the periodontology departments of 3 different dental hospitals. Changes in clinical (defect width and height) and radiographic (augmented horizontal bone thickness) parameters were measured between implant surgery with guided bone regeneration (GBR) and re-entry surgery. Postoperative discomfort (severity and duration of pain and swelling) and early soft-tissue wound healing (dehiscence and inflammation) were also assessed. Data were compared between the BCP (test) and DBBM (control) groups using the independent t-test and the χ² test. RESULTS: Of the 53 cases included, 27 were in the test group and 26 were in the control group. After a healing period of 18 weeks, the full and mean resolution of buccal dehiscence defects were 59.3% (n=16) and 71.3% in the test group and 42.3% (n=11) and 57.9% in the control group, respectively. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the change in mean horizontal bone augmentation (test group: -0.50±0.66 mm vs. control groups: -0.66±0.83 mm, P=0.133), postoperative discomfort, or early wound healing. No adverse or fatal complications occurred in either group. CONCLUSION: The GBR procedure with the newly developed BCP showed favorable clinical, radiographic, postoperative discomfort-related, and early wound healing outcomes for peri-implant dehiscence defects that were similar to those for DBBM. Periodontitis is an oral disease caused by bacterial infection that has stages according to the severity of tissue destruction. The advanced stage of periodontitis presents irreversible destruction of soft and hard tissues, which finally results in loss of teeth. When conventional treatment modalities show limited results, tissue regeneration therapy is required in patients with advanced periodontitis. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) delivering bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) on tissue regeneration in a periodontitis model. BMP7 is a member of the BMP family that shows bone-forming ability; however, BMPs rapid clearing and degradation and unproven efficacy make it difficult to apply it in clinical dentistry. To overcome this, we established BMP7-expressing engineered BM-MSCs (BMP7-eBMSCs) that showed superior osteogenic differentiation potential when subcutaneously transplanted with a biphasic calcium phosphate scaffold into immunocompromised mice. Furthermore, the efficacy of BMP7-eBMSC transplantation for periodontal tissue regeneration was evaluated in a rat ligature-induced periodontitis model. Upon measuring two-dimensional and three-dimensional amounts of regenerated alveolar bone using microcomputed tomography, the amounts were found to be significantly higher in the BMP7-eBMSC transplantation group than in the eBMSC transplantation group. Most importantly, fibrous periodontal ligament (PDL) tissue regeneration was also achieved upon BMP7-eBMSC transplantation, which was evaluated by calculating the modified relative connective tissue attachment. The amount of connective tissue attachment in the BMP7-eBMSC transplantation group was significantly higher than that in the ligature-induced periodontitis group, although the increase was comparable between the BMP7-eBMSC and human PDL stem cell transplantation groups. Taken together, our results suggested that sustainable release of BMP7 induces periodontal tissue regeneration and that transplantation of BMP7-eBMSCs is a feasible treatment option for periodontal regeneration. Impact Statement Periodontitis is the second most common human dental disease affecting chronic systemic diseases. Despite the tremendous efforts trying to cure the damaged periodontal tissues using tissue engineering technologies, a definitive regenerative method has not been in consensus. Researchers are seeking more feasible and abundant source of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), and furthermore, how to use reliable growth factors under more efficient control are the issues to be solved. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) gene delivering bone marrow-derived MSCs on periodontal tissue regeneration to evaluate the efficacy of BMP7 and engineered BMSCs for periodontal tissue regeneration.

This study evaluated 3D printed polycaprolactone (PCL) composite scaffold and recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2), loaded either onto a PCL composite scaffold or implant surface, for vertical bone augmentation with implant placement. Three-dimensional printed PCL frames were filled with powdered PCL, hydroxyapatite, and ß-tricalcium phosphate. RhBMP-2 was loaded to the PCL composite scaffolds and implant surfaces, and rhBMP-2 release was quantified for 21 days. Experimental implants were placed bilaterally on 20 rabbit calvaria, and the PCL composite scaffolds were vertically augmented. The randomly allocated experimental groups were divided by carrier and rhBMP-2 dosage as no rhBMP-2 (control), 5 µg rhBMP-2 loaded to PCL composite (Scaffold/rhBMP-2[5 µg]), 5 µg rhBMP-2 loaded to implant (Implant/rhBMP-2[5 µg]), 30 µg rhBMP-2 loaded to PCL composite (Scaffold/rhBMP-2[30 µg]), and 30 µg rhBMP-2 loaded to implant (Implant/rhBMP-2[30 µg]). Histologic and histometric analyses were conducted after 8 weeks. In both scaffold-loading and implant-loading, rhBMP-2 released initially rapidly, then slowly and constantly. Released rhBMP-2 totaled 23.02 ± 1.03% and 24.69 ± 1.14% in the scaffold-loaded and implant-loaded groups, respectively. There were no significant differences in histologic bone-implant contact (%). Peri-implant bone density (%) was significantly higher in the Scaffold/rhBMP-2(30 µg) and Implant/rhBMP-2(30 µg) groups. Total bone density (%) was not significantly different between the Scaffold/rhBMP-2(5 µg), Implant/rhBMP-2(5 µg), and control groups, or between the Scaffold/rhBMP-2(30 µg) and Implant/rhBMP-2(30 µg) groups, but was significantly higher in the Scaffold/rhBMP-2(30 µg) and Implant/rhBMP-2(30 µg) groups than in the controls. Three-dimensional printed PCL composite scaffold with rhBMP-2 produced vertical osteogenesis and osseointegration, regardless of rhBMP-2 loading to the PCL composite scaffold or implant surface.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare straight and tapered implant designs in terms of marginal bone loss, the modified plaque index (mPI), and the modified bleeding index (mBI) for 5 years after functional loading. METHODS: Twelve patients were recruited. Two types of implants were placed adjacent to each other: 1 straight implant and 1 tapered implant. Marginal bone loss, mPI, and mBI were measured every year for 5 years after loading. RESULTS: The straight implants showed 0.2±0.4 mm of marginal bone loss at 5 years after loading, while the tapered implants showed 0.2±0.3 mm of marginal bone loss; this difference was not statistically significant (P=0.833). Our analysis also showed no statistically significant differences in mPI (straight implants: 0.3±0.3 vs. tapered implants: 0.2±0.3; P=0.414) or in mBI (straight implants: 0.3±0.4 vs. tapered implants: 0.2±0.3; P=0.317) at 5 years after prosthesis delivery. CONCLUSIONS: Straight and tapered implants showed no significant differences with respect to marginal bone loss, mPI, and mBI for 5 years after loading.

This study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of diagnosing periodontitis via the identification of 18 bacterial species in mouth-rinse samples. Patients (n = 110) who underwent dental examinations in the Department of Periodontology at the Veterans Health Service Medical Center between 2018 and 2019 were included. They were divided into healthy and periodontitis groups. The overall number of bacteria, and those of 18 specific bacteria, were determined via real-time polymerase chain reaction in 92 mouth-rinse samples. Differences between groups were evaluated through logistic regression after adjusting for sex, age, and smoking history. There was a significant difference in the prevalence (healthy vs. periodontitis group) of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans (2.9% vs. 13.5%), Treponema denticola (42.9% vs. 69.2%), and Prevotella nigrescens (80% vs. 2.7%). Levels of Treponema denticola, Prevotella nigrescens, and Streptococcus mitis were significantly associated with severe periodontitis. We demonstrated the feasibility of detecting periopathogenic bacteria in mouth-rinse samples obtained from patients with periodontitis. As we did not comprehensively assess all periopathogenic bacteria, further studies are required to assess the potential of oral-rinsing solutions to indicate oral infection risk and the need to improve oral hygiene, and to serve as a complementary method for periodontal disease diagnosis.

A porous titanium structure was suggested to improve implant stability in the early healing period or in poor bone quality. This study investigated the effect of a porous structure on the osseointegration of dental implants. A total of 28 implants (14 implants in each group) were placed in the posterior mandibles of four beagle dogs at 3 months after extraction. The control group included machined surface implants with an external implant-abutment connection, whereas test group implants had a porous titanium structure added to the apical portion. Resonance frequency analysis (RFA); removal torque values (RTV); and surface topographic and histometric parameters including bone-to-implant contact length and ratio, inter-thread bone area and ratio in total, and the coronal and apical parts of the implants were measured after 4 weeks of healing. RTV showed a significant difference between the groups after 4 weeks of healing (p = 0.032), whereas no difference was observed in RFA. In the test group, surface topography showed bone tissue integrated into the porous structures. In the apical part of the test group, all the histometric parameters exhibited significant increases compared to the control group. Within the limitations of this study, enhanced bone growth into the porous structure was achieved, which consequently improved osseointegration of the implant.

Although titanium-based implants are widely used in orthopedic and dental clinics, improved osseointegration at the bone-implant interface is still required. In this study, we developed a titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V, Ti) coated with epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and magnesium ions (Mg2+) in a metal-polyphenol network (MPN) formation. Specifically, Ti discs were coated with EGCG in MgCl2 by controlling their concentrations and pH, with the amount of coating increasing with the coating time. An in vitro culture of human adipose-derived stem cells (hADSCs) on the EGCG-Mg2+-coated Ti showed significantly enhanced ALP activity and mRNA expression of osteogenic markers. In addition, the EGCG-Mg2+-coated Ti enhanced the mineralization of hADSCs, significantly increasing the calcium content (22.2 ± 5.0 µg) compared with cells grown on Ti (13.5 ± 0.3 µg). Treatment with 2-APB, an inhibitor of Mg2+ signaling, confirmed that the enhancement of osteogenic differentiation in the hADSCs was caused by the synergistic influence of EGCG and Mg2+. The EGCG-Mg2+ coating significantly reduced the osteoclastic maturation of Raw264.7 cells, reducing tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase activity (5.4 ± 0.4) compared with that of cells grown on Ti (1.0 ± 0.5). When we placed Ti implants onto rabbit tibias, the bone-implant contact (%) was greater on the EGCG-Mg2+-coated Ti implants (8.1 ± 4.3) than on the uncoated implants (4.4 ± 2.0). Therefore, our MPN coating could be a reliable surface modification for orthopedic implants to enable the delivery of an osteoinductive metal ion (Mg2+) with the synergistic benefits of a polyphenol (EGCG).

The periodontal complex consisting of alveolar bone, cementum, and periodontal ligaments (PDL) supports human teeth through the systematic orchestration of mineralized tissues and fibrous tissues. Importantly, cementum, the outermost mineralized layer of dental roots, plays an essential role by bridging the inner ligaments from the dental root to the alveolar bone. When the periodontal complex is damaged, the regeneration of each component of the periodontal complex is necessary; however, it is still challenging to achieve complete functional regeneration. In this study, we tried to control the regeneration of cementum and PDL by using a human PDL stem cell (hPDLSC) sheet engineering technology with the pretreatment of recombinant human BMP-2 (rhBMP-2). Isolated hPDLSCs obtained from extracted human teeth were pretreated with rhBMP-2 for in vitro osteogenic differentiation and grafted on the micro/macro-porous biphasic calcium phosphate (MBCP) blocks, which represent dental roots. The MBCPs with hPDLSC sheets were implanted in the subcutaneous layer of immune-compromised mice, and rhBMP-2 pretreated hPDLSC sheets showed higher mineralization and collagen ligament deposition than the no-pretreatment group. Therefore, the rhBMP-2-hPDLSC sheet technique could be an effective strategy for the synchronized regeneration of two different tissues: mineralized tissue and fibrous tissues in periodontal complexes.

Dental implant surgeries involve the insertion of implant fixtures into alveolar bones to replace missing teeth. When the availability of alveolar bone at the surgical site is insufficient, bone graft particles are filled in the insertion site for successful bone reconstruction. Bone graft particles induce bone regeneration over several months at the insertion site. Subsequently, implant fixtures can be inserted at the recipient site. Thus, conventional dental implant surgery is performed in several steps, which in turn increases the treatment period and cost involved. Therefore, to reduce surgical time and minimize treatment costs, a novel hybrid scaffold filled with bone graft particles that could be combined with implant fixtures is proposed. This scaffold is composed of a three-dimensionally (3D) printed polycaprolactone (PCL) frame and osteoconductive ceramic materials such as hydroxyapatite (HA) and ß-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP). Herein, we analyzed the porosity, internal microstructure, and hydrophilicity of the hybrid scaffold. Additionally, Saos-2 cells were used to assess cell viability and proliferation. Two types of control scaffolds were used (a 3D printed PCL frame and a hybrid scaffold without HA/ß-TCP particles) for comparison, and the fabricated hybrid scaffold was verified to retain osteoconductive ceramic particles without losses. Moreover, the fabricated hybrid scaffold had high porosity and excellent microstructural interconnectivity. The in vitro Saos-2 cell experiments revealed superior cell proliferation and alkaline phosphatase assay results for the hybrid scaffold than the control scaffold. Hence, the proposed hybrid scaffold is a promising candidate for minimizing cost and duration of dental implant surgery.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane (dHACM) to repair perforated sinus membranes in rabbits. METHODS: Bilateral surgical windows (7.5-mm diameter) were prepared on the nasal bones of 14 rabbits. Standardized circular perforations (5-mm diameter) were made in the sinus membrane by manipulating implant twist drills. The perforated sinus membranes were repaired using dHACM or a resorbable collagen membrane (CM). The negative control (NC) group did not undergo perforated sinus membrane repair, while the positive control (PC) group underwent sinus augmentation without perforations. The same amount of deproteinized porcine bone mineral was grafted in all 4 groups. After 6 weeks, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and histomorphometric evaluations were conducted. RESULTS: The micro-CT analysis revealed that the total augmented volume was not significantly different among the groups. In the dHACM group, newly formed bone filled the augmented area with remaining biomaterials; however, non-ciliated flat epithelium and inflammatory cells were observed on the healed sinus membrane. Histometric analysis showed that the percentage of newly formed bone area in the dHACM group did not differ significantly from that in the CM group. The dHACM group showed a significantly higher percentage of newly formed bone area than the NC group, but there was no significant difference between the dHACM and PC groups. CONCLUSIONS: dHACM could be a feasible solution for repairing sinus membrane perforations that occur during sinus floor augmentation.

PURPOSE: Implant wall thickness and the height of the implant-abutment interface are known as factors that affect the distribution of stress on the marginal bone around the implant. The goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of supracrestal implant placement and implant wall thickness on maintenance of the marginal bone level. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 101 patients with a single implant were divided into the following 4 groups according to the thickness of the implant wall and the initial implant placement level immediately after surgery: 0.75 mm wall thickness, epicrestal position; 0.95 mm wall thickness, epicrestal position; 0.75 mm wall thickness, supracrestal position; 0.95 mm wall thickness, supracrestal position. The marginal bone level change was assessed 1 day after implant placement, immediately after functional loading, and 1 to 5 years after prosthesis delivery. To compare the marginal bone level change, repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to evaluate the statistical significance of differences within groups and between groups over time. Pearson correlation coefficients were also calculated to analyze the correlation between implant placement level and bone loss. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences in bone loss among the 4 groups (P<0.01) and within each group over time (P<0.01) were observed. There was no significant difference between the groups with a wall thickness of 0.75 mm and 0.95 mm. In a multiple comparison, the groups with a supracrestal placement level showed greater bone loss than the epicrestal placement groups. In addition, a significant correlation between implant placement level and marginal bone loss was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The degree of bone resorption was significantly higher for implants with a supracrestal placement compared to those with an epicrestal placement.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Proteome analysis of periodontal ligament stem cells (PDLSCs) could be used to study the function of PDL tissue. We used a label-free quantitative proteomic technique to investigate differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in human PDLSCs (hPDLSCs) compared to human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) and identify proteins specific to hPDLSCs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: hPDLSCs (n = 3) and hBMSCs (n = 3) were cultured and harvested for protein extraction and trypsin digestion. The proteomes of both cell types were analyzed by nano-liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. DEPs in hPDLSCs compared to hBMSCs were detected by label-free quantification and evaluated through signal transduction pathway and gene ontology (GO) analysis. RESULTS: In total, 690 and 771 proteins were identified from hPDLSCs and hBMSCs, of which 561 proteins were in common and 124 DEPs were found between hPDLSCs and hBMSCs. Fifty-eight proteins were expressed at significantly higher levels in hPDLSCs, whereas 66 proteins were expressed at lower levels compared to hBMSCs. The more highly expressed proteins were associated with translation and initiating protein synthesis, and lower expressed proteins were related to cell aging and metabolic processes. Proteins unique to hPDLSCs and hBMSCs were associated with translation and metabolic processes, respectively. CONCLUSION: Our results demonstrate evidence of distinct differences in protein expression between hPDLSCs and hBMSCs by using label-free quantitative proteomic analysis which was the first attempt in this field. DEPs included previously reported hPDLSC marker proteins and novel marker candidates, such as microtubule-associated protein, CTP synthase 1 and stathmin, which could be the markers for developing periodontal disease diagnostics and therapies.

RESUMEN

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a promising therapeutic option for cell-based therapy due to their immunomodulatory and regenerative properties. They can be isolated from various adult tissues, including bone marrow, fat, dental tissue, and glandular tissue. Although they share common characteristics, little is known about the biological differences between MSC populations derived from different tissues. In this study, we used MS to compare the endogenous metabolite level in the human MSCs originating from the bone marrow, adipose tissue, periodontal ligaments, and salivary glands. Using an optimized metabolomics technique, we verified that human MSCs exhibit differences in the endogenous metabolite level depending on their source material, while the multivariate analysis showed that 5 lysophosphatidylcholines and 3 lysophosphatidylethanolamines can serve as markers for the discrimination between MSC sources and may be related to differences in their differentiation capacity. These results may significantly contribute to further mechanistic studies on the MSCs and provide novel insights into the properties and optimal usage of MSCs from different tissues.

This is the first report on the development of a covalently bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP2)-immobilized hydrogel that is suitable for osteogenic differentiation of human periodontal ligament stem cells (hPLSCs). O-propargyl-tyrosine (OpgY) was site-specifically incorporated into BMP2 to prepare BMP2-OpgY with an alkyne group. The engineered BMP2-OpgY exhibited osteogenic characteristics after in vitro osteogenic differentiation of hPLSCs, indicating the osteogenic ability of BMP2-OpgY. A methoxy polyethylene glycol-(polycaprolactone-(N3)) block copolymer (MC-N3) was prepared as an injectable in situ-forming hydrogel. BMP2 covalently immobilized on an MC hydrogel (MC-BMP2) was prepared quantitatively by a simple biorthogonal reaction between alkyne groups on BMP2-OpgY and azide groups on MC-N3 via a Cu(I)-catalyzed click reaction. The hPLSCs-loaded MC-BMP2 formed a hydrogel almost immediately upon injection into animals. In vivo osteogenic differentiation of hPLSCs in the MC-BMP2 formulation was confirmed by histological staining and gene expression analyses. Histological staining of hPLSC-loaded MC-BMP2 implants showed evidence of mineralized calcium deposits, whereas hPLSC-loaded MC-Cl or BMP2-OpgY mixed with MC-Cl, implants showed no mineral deposits. Additionally, MC-BMP2 induced higher levels of osteogenic gene expression in hPLSCs than in other groups. In conclusion, BMP2-OpgY covalently immobilized on MC-BMP2 induced osteogenic differentiation of hPLSCs as a noninvasive method for bone tissue engineering.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of microthreads on the coronal bone healing of narrow-diameter implants with reverse-tapered design. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 52 implants were classified into two groups according to presence or absence of coronal microthreads, the reverse-tapered narrow-diameter implant (RTN) group, and the reverse-tapered narrow-diameter implant with microthreads (RTNM) group. The implants were installed in split-mouth design in the edentulous mandible of six dogs. Three animals were sacrificed at 4 weeks and three at 8 weeks. Resonance frequency analysis, bone measurement using microcomputed tomography (micro-CT), removal torque test, and histometric analysis were performed. RESULTS: No significant differences in implant stability quotient value were observed between the groups at baseline, 4 weeks, or 8 weeks. Bone measurement using micro-CT showed that bone-implant contact volume (BICV) and bone-implant contact volume ratio (BICVR) in the coronal part of RTNM were statistically higher than those in RTN at 4 and 8 weeks. Histometric analysis showed statistically higher bone-implant contact length (BICL) in the coronal part of RTNM than in RTN at 4 weeks; however, bone-implant contact ratio (BICR) was not significantly different between the groups. At 8 weeks, the BICL and BICR did not differ significantly between the groups. Removal torque test showed no significant differences between the groups at 4 and 8 weeks. CONCLUSIONS: The microthreads might facilitate more coronal bone-implant contact due to increased surface areas at an early healing phase; however, they did not significantly affect coronal bone healing at 8 weeks.

PURPOSE: The microstructural characteristics of trabecular bone were identified using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), in order to develop a potential strategy for implant surface improvement to facilitate osseointegration. METHODS: Alveolar bone specimens from the cadavers of 30 humans were scanned by high-resolution micro-CT and reconstructed. Volumes of interest chosen within the jaw were classified according to Hounsfield units into 4 bone quality categories. Several structural parameters were measured and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Alveolar bone specimens with D1 bone quality had significantly higher values for all structural parameters than the other bone quality categories, except for trabecular thickness (Tb.Th). The percentage of bone volume, trabecular separation (Tb.Sp), and trabecular number (Tb.N) varied significantly among bone quality categories. Tb.Sp varied markedly across the bone quality categories (D1: 0.59±0.22 mm, D4: 1.20±0.48 mm), whereas Tb.Th had similar values (D1: 0.30±0.08 mm, D4: 0.22±0.05 mm). CONCLUSIONS: Bone quality depended on Tb.Sp and number-that is, endosteal space architecture-rather than bone surface and Tb.Th. Regardless of bone quality, Tb.Th showed little variation. These factors should be taken into account when developing individualized implant surface topographies.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the influences of height or area ratio of residual alveolar bone to graft material on marginal bone loss around implants in the augmented maxillary sinuses with delayed implant placement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 42 patients with Astra implants in sinuses that had been augmented with alloplasts and allografts or xenografts (alveolar bone height ≤ 5 mm) were selected. Marginal bone level surrounding 1 implant per sinus was assessed by radiographic imaging at the time of final restoration delivery and 12 months after functional loading. To evaluate the marginal bone level alterations using clinical and radiographic data, Pearson's correlation analysis and Mann-Whitney test were performed. RESULTS: Forty-six implants were included in this study. The residual bone/implant length ratio and the residual bone/implant area ratio were not associated with marginal bone loss at 1 year after functional loading (P > 0.05). And, marginal bone loss did not differ significantly between 2 types of graft materials during the observation period (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The residual bone/implant length ratio and residual bone/implant area ratio were not associated with marginal bone loss around implants placed in augmented sinuses during 1 year of functional loading.
